The Question

“Ver y superstitious, writing on the wall Ver y superstitious, ladders ‘bout to fall Thirteen month old baby, broke the looking glass Seven years of bad luck, the good things in your past.”

Superstitions have inspired song and all art forms for centuries. The infamous (and incredible) play by Willy Russel, Blood Brothers, is based entirely around two main superstitions; never separate twins, and never put new shoes on a table. This in mind, and with Halloween just around the corner, what better time to talk about superstitions? In a country rich with culture and myth it is no wonder we have held so tightly onto tales of witches, curses and mí-ád. Old-wives-tales passed through generations bring with them cures for a toothache and words of caution… Wind whistling outside the window. It happens, and often resembles a wailing woman. A Banshee perhaps? Prominent in Irish folklore, the Banshee

is subject to much debate. Some believe she will defend those of her clan and with a good heart. Others believe her cry is one of impending doom, the nearing loss of an important family member. It was said she held a comb, or in the process of combing her hair. From this came the omen of bad luck coming from finding a comb on the floor. Staying with my grandmother when I was small, my cousin and I shared a room. Having whispered stories of ghouls and things that go bump in the night it was to be expected that at least one of us would have a bad dream. The clock struck midnight, she leapt from the bed with a sharp intake of breath. I turned to see if she was alright, only to be greeted with a shove under the blankets and a berating hiss. “Did you open your eyes?” “What?” “Did you open your eyes?” “No, why?”

Never ask a man going fishing where he is going I was brought up with the superstition that you don’t ask a man going fishing where he is going. Its bad luck for both of you. It’s not a very common one, I don’t know if it was my dad’s way of telling me to mind my own business or what. But I have heard it back occasionally. Marie, Kilkenny

New shoes on the table Very bad luck! I would never put new shoes on the table and I have my girls told same. I don’t know where it came from… but I think if I saw a shoe box on the table I would have a heart attack! Annmarie, Kerry

One for sorrow My dad always did it when we were younger and still does. So now I even have my two year old doing it. I guess it is sort of inconvenient, how many times a day will you see a magpie? But I couldn’t stop now. Linda, Cork

THE ? ? ? ? ?QUESTION ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?By Clíona ? ?Lawton ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?

“It’s witching hour. If you open your eyes they will come for us.”

Yes, we were children and that justifies her reaction at that time of night, but the curious thing is that to this day—twenty years on—she will not open her eyes if she awakens during “witching hour”. Instead she will duck beneath the blankets until the sixty minutes of mysticism and wiccans has passed.

Whether you leap across cracks in the footpath or throw spilt salt over your shoulder, we all have a little something we are superstitious about. Call it habit if you wish but let me ask you this; would you feel paranoid should you be prevented from say… waving at a single magpie? “One for sorrow, two for joy, three for a girl, four for a boy.” A harmless rhyme, yet to this day people count magpies near them. You’ve heard mine, now it’s time for a few of yours.

Never walk under a ladder Everyone knows this one, right? Well yeah, never walk under a ladder! Or scaffolding… or anything that can fall on you! Dara, Dublin

If you bang your elbow bang the other one for luck Yes, yes, I know, my friends tell me all the time how stupid it is, but all my family does it and I don’t know, I guess it works! I won €20 in a scratch card before the day after I did it so I am going to keep doing it until I die. Stephanie, Cork City

Lucky Socks I won my first county medal wearing Barbie socks on under my football socks because my feet were so small. To this day those socks are still in my training back and come to every match with me. I don’t know if that is the kind of superstitions you are looking for, but there you go. Clara, Mayo

Asks what’s in your make-up bag?

I

have the great pleasure of working with so many great ladies, whether it is when I am on TV, in my shop, or when I do lots of wedding talks to potential brides in hotels around Ireland, and I often do them with Sybil Mulcahy. When we work together we always have such great fun, and I love being inter viewed by her on Xposé, so this month I asked her what she loves in her makeup bag and what products she can or can’t live without. What are your favourite Top 5 makeup products? I love your HD Foundation, as it’s lovely for ever y day, and also when I am on tv. It gives a soft sheen to the skin and covers what needs to be covered! I am a dab hand at doing my own eyeliner, so I love to use Bobby Brown’s gel eyeliner. I find it will not crease during the day and it is really black, so adds to your lash line! I love my Max Factor False Ef fect mascara. It really is great to lengthen my lashes and make my eyes look bigger. On my brows I use my Benefit brow kit to define my brows without looking too dark. I don’t like the really dark brows on girls these days, I think they look too severe. I love my He-Shi tanning lotion when I need to look tanned. I normally do my own tan because I have had some disasters in the past. and I find this gives a lovely natural tan. Where do you go for a facial? I go to Carter Beauty, not just for my face but for other things as well! Who looks after your hair? Preen Salon do. They not only do great hair, but are lovely to deal with. How long does it take you to do your own makeup in the morning? I have it down to 5 mins… and I’m not adverse to doing it in the car from time to time, but I have learnt for the best (pointing at Ken himself!) www.kenboylan.com KenBoylanMakeupPlay

GLENDA GILSON

Glenda Gilson 10 WOhmagazine.ie

GLENDA GILSON

Glenda Gilson is instantly recognisable to almost all of us as the beautiful model and confident TV presenter that she has become known for. Glenda who has been modelling most of her life and part of the Xposé team for the last 8 years, recently celebrated her 1st wedding anniversary, so we decided to meet up with her to see how her first year of wedded bliss was, look back at her fabulous career and get her to name drop a few stories about celebrities along the way.

Y

ou have been modelling since a very young age, and have been with Assets Modelling Agency for over twenty years. A few of your colleagues have left and moved elsewhere over the years, what is it about Assets that has always made remain loyal to them? I did (stay loyal) because I actually started there as a young kid aged nine and have been modelling since I was three, ‘Dickie’ aka Derek Daniels was the one who met me at the door on the first day, and Mags Humphries was also there at the time. Derek has become a good friend of mine since and has always looked after me, so I wouldn’t go anywhere else. With my TV work I cant do as much modelling, not to mention age, as I’m getting older so Derek would put me on the fashion shows hosting and MC’ing which I love, so yes he still looks after me as I do him. How has the criteria for modelling changed since you started off? It’s changed so much, I laugh with Vivien Connelly and a few of the other girls I used to work with about it because we all used to get on a bus and go to Bally go backwards or wherever we were, do the job we were booked for and get back on the bus with little bottles of wine and would all have a little sing song on the way home, as well as stopping off to buy a bag of chips, that was our thing. Later on in modelling you would see the girls just coming from the gym after two hours, drinking big bottles of water, eating nuts and I’d be going “ah here, this doesn’t suit me, I have to get out.” Back then it was models who were born that way. I said that to Naomi Campbell when I inter viewed her recently and she said that Jane Fonda had a workout back in the day, but she agreed and said I was right, that models didn’t work out like they do today. Speaking of ‘Naomi Campbell’, she was part of Ireland’s first ever ‘Super Model Show’ at the Point Depot in association with ‘The Late Late Show’ back in the 90’s, along with some of

the most empowering and beautiful woman of the world. You were also on the catwalk that evening , did you feel intimidated or part of that gang? Ner vous is how I felt, I did three of those Super Model Shows, two in Dublin and one in Cork. At the time, I’ll never forget it, ‘Naomi Campbell’, ‘Christy Turlington’, ‘Yasmin Le Bon’ the list goes on, we are all there and of course ‘Bono’ had all the stars there as it was in support of the ‘ISPCC’ and ‘Ali Hewsons’ Chernobyl Charity. I had my curly hair back then when I did it and I walked with a ‘hop and a skip’. When I look back at it now I go, Jesus I’m scarlet! But look it was what it was and it was a fantastic time. There’s one part that always sticks out in my head from those shows though, there was a load of us Irish models with our heads in the mirror checking ourselves out when Yasmin Le Bon walked over wearing nothing but a ‘Lainey Keogh’ skirt, she was just about covering her modesty and she said “Girls, sorr y can I just use the mirror”, and we all just scattered. She went to the mirror and said “Honestly girls, tell me does my bum look big in this?”. I couldn’t believe it, we all just went if your bum is big then what are ours? This was a Supermodel and she was asking us was her bum big, I will never forget it.

“I would actually prefer to go into the jungle rather than Big Brother.” You’re now one of the most recognised women on Irish TV screens, how did you make the transition from modelling to TV presenting? During my time modelling I was going to Ballyfermot College to do TV and Radio Broadcasting and Print and Media Journalism. It didn’t happen over night for me. I then stopped the college

Glenda Gilson with #WOh Magazine’s Robbie Kane course and started modelling more often, as I thought if I want to get into TV presenting, I’d probably be better off going down the modelling route and see if I could get into it that way. Then luckily I got a job on ‘Bubble Hits’ which was a 24 hour satellite music channel presenting with Liam McKenna formerly of Irish Pop-group ‘Six’. They then gave me my own show called ‘Glenda’s Showbiz Goss’, which was great fun. One day I got a phone call from Andrew Hanlon who was a head guy in TV3 , who asked me if I would cover maternity leave for six months on Xposé, and here I am eight years later still doing it. TV3 are great for getting very popular UK shows like ‘Big Brother’ and ‘Celebrity Big Brother’ onto Irish Screens, are you hoping to be on the short-list for the next series? Or would you like to step into Nadia Fordes shoes on a show like ‘Im a Celebrity get me out of here’? Oh God I wish! I would actually prefer to go into the jungle rather than Big Brother. I’m not afraid of heights but I wouldn’t be into eating all that crap they have to eat. Anyone who knows me can

wOhmagazine.ie 11

GLENDA GILSON see that I really can’t sit still and I’m on for anything, I’ve always been a bit of a tom boy. I have one brother, so I’m guessing that’s where it comes from. I see people in the Big Brother House and they look bored out of their minds, I think that’s what the producers want, so they start fights and misbehave. On “Im a Celeb” you’ve a few things to do, so I’d definitely prefer that. If you know anybody doing the short-list ask them to put my name on it!. It would though be great for your career in the UK as you’ve already been on with Rylan Clarke on ‘Big Brothers Bit On The Side’. Well yes true, but I have a great job at the moment. I get to meet some great people and I’m ver y lucky to have met ever yone there is to meet, so who knows what the future holds. Once its in showbiz and entertainment I will be happy. Who or what was your favourite interview to date? Its always the big stars, like Michael Douglas and the likes. They are really good because they know you’ve got a job to do, and know that you know that they’ve got a job to do too. Its usually the celebrities who get fame overnight that can be difficult. Robbie Williams, for me has always been a cool one. I knocked on the door of a hotel room to meet him one day, usually you’re met by their P.R people, but to my shock Robbie opened it himself with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth going “How ya love”, I was shocked and apologising. He asked me if I had just flown in on the red eye because it was ver y early and then told me that he used to do that all the time when he would be leaving the POD Nightclub in Dublin at all hours of the morning and would be sitting on the plane in a heap, he was ver y funny. About ten minutes into the inter view, and having a great chat, one of the two camera men said “Sorr y I never pressed record”, Robbie simply said “Well we just have to do it again.” So we did it again and he really didn’t mind, he did it with the same enthusiasm as before. He played ball and was just so normal, I’ve loved him ever since.

your wedding album and you look stunning in every shot. If you had the opportunity to do it all over again tomorrow, would you change anything? I wouldn’t, thankfully I’ve found the one and I’m going to be with him forever, also I tell you I’m not planning another wedding, It was hard work! I’m a bit of a control freak even when it comes to things like that. I had a great wedding planner in Doonbeg Co, Clare, where we got married, and I also had a wedding planner friend of mine who knew ever ything, but of course I had to give the last word. Rob my husband was ver y into it as well, he likes the little details, he wanted to see the flowers and pick the cake. It was the most fantastic day we have ever had, heres to many more happy years as I’m never getting married again! Well congratulations again and lets hope it lasts forever. Any signs of a little baby bump stirring? Haha no! Not just yet, a beer belly that’s it!

“Thankfully I’ve found the one and I’m going to be with him forever.”

It was your first Wedding Anniversary recently, I was lucky enough to see 12 WOhmagazine.ie

Are you both hoping to have children eventually? Oh we would love to, but not just yet. Hopefully we will be lucky enough for that to happen. We are both God Parents and we adore our Godchildren but yes we would both love to have our own someday.

On a sad note, you lost one of your best friends recently, are you coping ok and how if at all are you filing the void? Yes that was kind of a sad one and especially when I saw my wedding video because certain people were on it. Actually since my wedding there is four people on the list who are unfortunately no longer with us which is hard to believe. I’m only married a year, its always tough and I just feel for the families loss. Hopefully they are having a good time where ever they are as our thoughts are always with them.

You seem to have grown up in front of us, from being a model to a TV presenter and now a wife, but most people out there only know you from your on screen persona. Tell us in three words how you would describe your personality? Three words ( laughs) Ok! Hopefully I’m a ‘happy’ person. Some days when I’m working, especially if I’m tired, I can become a ver y miserable person, but generally I’m a ver y happy and

GLENDA GILSON friendly person. I’d talk to the wall, a dog on the street, that’s just the sort of person I am. Other people might not agree with that, especially if you read my Twitter feed and see some of the comments people write. It actually quite surprises me when I read some of them. But you know, you cant please ever yone all of the time. I’m a true believer in what comes around goes around, so treat others they way you wanted to be treated. So you have ‘happy’ ‘friendly’ oh and I’m ‘fun’. Would you agree? Absolutely, as I know you, I can totally say you are those three things 100%. The Rugby World Cup is on at the moment in England. Ireland of course are partaking, you used to hang around in those circles some years back, have you been watching it at all? Yes I have been, the lovely Paul O’Connell is probably the only one left from the old team that I knew back in the day and he does such great things. I hear my husband Rob talking about

“I’m a true believer in what comes around goes around, so treat others they way you want to be treated.” this fella and that fella and I’d be thinking who? I just love the game and Im often guilty of screaming at the telly wishing them the best. I see Keith Wood commentating on it and he is doing a brilliant job too. So Glenda final question, moving forward what’s your next plan?

My next plan is to keep going and to keep working please God! You mentioned ‘Big Brothers Bit on the Side’ earlier and Rylan has asked me back. He is great, and one of the nicest people I’ve met. I inter viewed him and mentioned I was a fan of Big Brother. He said I had to come over and be on the panel, and luckily I did, and will again. Its all thanks to my friend Ruth Henshaw who is obsessed with the show, she keeps me up to date with it all even if I miss it, so cheers to her for that. Well the best of luck with everything Glenda in the coming months you’ve been brilliant today and thanks so much for taking the time out of your busy schedule to talk to #WOh! Magazine. You can catch Glenda on Xposé weeknights on TV3 Interview by Robbie Kane

REAL LIFE

H

i, I’m Jess. I only recently started college. I thought it would be like the TV show, New Girl. I know she isn’t in college, but in my mind it would be new housemates who you wouldn’t think would blend together, but do. And they go on wonderful adventures, have amazing parties, and everything works out in the end, while Jess stays fun and bubbly and the centre of everything. It turns out life’s not like that. I moved from a country town to the big city, bright eyed and bushy tailed. No one from my school was going to the same college as me, and my brother is finished this year and is gone to America, so I was going to be all alone on my first big real world experience. I was looking forward to studying Nutritional Science and getting to know new people. When I moved in the Sunday before college started, I found out I was going to be living with two girls and two guys, all first years too. The first night they decided we would have a few drinks and get to know one another. One of my housemates Kelly* got absolutely wrecked and invited the guys from next door over. They are engineers and, as it turns out, randy as rabbits! James* had to kick them out at four in the morning when

two of them almost broke the chairs. Kelly* disappeared with the other two and let’s just say, with my room being beside hers, I didn’t get any sleep for the night. The other girl I am living with is already “in love” with my housemate Matt*. It is really uncomfortable, I feel trapped in my own room. Any time I go to the kitchen/sitting room they are all cuddly on the couch - until they get more than cuddly… I feel like I am invading their space. So there I am, trapped in my room, and ordering pizza and Chinese every night. Not so good for a wannabe Nutritional Scientist, huh? When it comes to outside of my accommodation, I am completely lost. I cannot navigate the campus, it is like a maze. I have missed so many classes already just by getting lost. An orientation mentor told me to email my lecturer and explain but I am afraid of sounding stupid and being given out to. The bring side is, I know I am not alone. There have been a few events organised for “freshers” including introduction to societies and through these events I have met many more people in my situation. I have going the Irish Language society and Airsoft, with the intention of joining more. But for now it

has relaxed me just knowing that I am not the only one suffering. Also, they do most events alcohol free, which really takes the pressure off! The Student Union has some events coming up next week too. They are teaching us how to manage money, peer pressure and how to stay healthy in college. All of these things are helping me to cope and I feel like in another few weeks I will have settled and will feel more at home. Another thing that helps is talking to my mom. I was so close to dropping out, but she gave me a good old fashioned Mommy Pep Talk. I was the best biology student in the class for the past two years running. I am meant to be here. I am meant to do this. And I will. My advice to anyone feeling lonely like me is don’t give up. There are other people like us, you just need to find us. The college wants you there, they societies and student’s union offer great advice and ways of helping us to find each other. So if you are like me and college scares the crap out of you, just ask one of them, and we can find each other. I’m here for a reason, and so are you. Adam Foley

Model Behaviour! Evan Bradley sat down with Lockdown Model Adam Foley to find out exactly what he plans on doing now that he’s a fully-fledged model! Meet Adam, he’s 18 and a true Cork man. At such a young age Adam is already the face of a clothing brand, has walked in several fashion shows and is now one of Cork’s most talked about models! 16 WOhmagazine.ie

Adam Foley How did you get into the world of modelling? For me, it was a lot easier to get into my dream job than I first thought. It was all due to great friend of mine, Evan Bradley. He’d always wanted me to give modelling a shot. As much as I longed to become one I never had a great deal of confidence or faith in myself to get up and go for it. At first I rejected Evan’s proposal to organise a shoot for me, I eventually caved and decided I’ll do one shoot. After what seemed a ver y successful first shoot, to my amazement I received two offers from well-established agencies here in Cork! I was over the moon & this spurred some momentum for me going for ward. What’s your favourite aspect of modelling? My favourite aspect of modelling seems to be working with the media. It’s an over whelming feeling when young people from ages 12-20 to approach you on first appearance and know your name as well as appreciate your work. It’s phenomenal how much people respect you for being in the media often. It’s great to have such a large support for what you want to do and even better getting appreciation for it. I love that modelling allows me to have a platform to share my views on important issues. Describe your personal look/style: My personal look lately involves a lot of classic or elegant looks. I enjoy rocking leather jackets and smart shoes w/ tassels. I like to wear blacked out glasses whenever I can. It’s a look that has been inspired by Teddy boys or “greasers”. I love rolled up sleeves and slicked back hair just because it’s different! It’s ver y important to have your own look and a little something extra that you bring to the table. Other than modelling what do you do? I spend A LOT of time on social media tr ying to promote myself & my profession besides that I’m mostly working. I work in Corks largest night club, the Savoy Theatre. It’s hard to title myself there as I’m more of a floater. If I’m called upon to pull a pint on the dance floor or handle the bookings and guest list at front of house I’ll happily do it. Also I am an event co-ordinator in the Savoy and run teen events with Evan Bradley who I’ve spoke of before. You are a European world champion in Tae Kwon-Do, are modelling and the world of martial arts alike? Modelling and Tae Kwon-Do are worlds apart. I’m surprised I was able to make the change so quickly. The people, the atmosphere and the satisfaction are all ver y different. It’s evident to a lot of

people that they should not be put on the same level. For me Sport was a way of releasing, a way of escaping from ever yday stressful life and along the way I managed to pick up some titles and advanced ver y well. Modelling for me is at the moment a great part time job. An enjoyable one for sure where I get to express myself in different ways. For me these aspects of my life are ver y different. You walked in a Cork Pride fashion show recently, tell us about that! It was one of the most enjoyable

experiences ever. I don’t think I felt more comfortable doing something in terms of modelling. It was a fantastic idea which helped highlight equality in the modelling business. Back stage was a lot more relaxed and enjoyable than usual. Also I felt I was modelling for a much bigger cause and in that way it was somewhat emotional! It definitely handed the models and organisers a lot more satisfaction. Where do you see yourself in five years? In five years I see myself being bigger wOhmagazine.ie 17

Adam Foley

than ever! I’ve always been a person to thrive and loathe failure. I hate losing and so far in my life I’ve been blessed with huge opportunities. Some people say I’ve been handed ever ything but in my opinion I’ve worked hard and deser ved ever y single thing I’ve earned. If my luck keeps going the way it’s going in terms of sports, school and modelling I could see myself doing very big things for sure. You’re based in Cork, would you like to model anywhere else? I would kill for an opportunity to make a name for myself in Dublin. Everyone knows Dublin or London is the place to go if you want to be an established model. So far 18 WOhmagazine.ie

things have been great and I appreciate everything that’s happened for me here in Cork but I believe you should never settle for less. You can always do better! I hope to hit Dublin or London and show them even more of what us Corkonians have in store! What’s next for you? College! College is only around the corner for me and I’ll be attending Corks Institute of Technology and I’ll be studying Business Information Systems for the next couple of years. Right now the next step is to get my old lifestyle back. I need to get myself fit again and shape my body back to what it once was. I like to look and feel good at the same time! It makes me happy and helps me be an even better model. I also

need to pick up Soccer again or get back to TKD (Tae Kwon-Do) to keep myself tipping over & to keep my mind sharp. Keeping fit is hugely important to me, I’m excited to get back into the gym! We here at #WOh are super excited for Adam and his future! We wish him the best of luck on his new journey. We hope college and the world are ready for him, we predict big things for this guy! Sorry, Not Sorry By Clíona Lawton

The Sorry Not Sorry hashtag became popular earlier this year after it was used to promote the upcoming season of Orange is the New Black, a show which has been praised for encouraging female empowerment, its clear display of the realities females face today. Despite male and female alike profusely stating that the sexes are now equal, we are not. If we are, why are women still saying “sorry” for things there is no need to be sorry for? Don’t believe me? Let’s go through a few prime examples, shall we? 20 WOhmagazine.ie

T

he “P” Word. Puh-puh-puh-period. There, I said it. Period. Half the world gets them; periods. We, as women, spend a quarter of the year in agony (well, unless you are one of those lucky few who cruise through two days of slight inconvenience once a month,) and yet we can’t even say the word for fear of offending someone. Boys tease young girls about “Aunt Flo”, “So are ya on the rag then? That why you’re such a b*tch?” but dare she retort with “Ahm, well, yes actually.” All hell breaks loose! The boys call the teacher, the teacher calls the principal, the principal calls the priest… Next thing you know we’ve got ourselves a good ole playground exorcism. A slight exaggeration perhaps, but to be fair, why are we apologetic for periods? From the scary first day of a girl’s debut into the world of menstruation they are taught that “this is a secret”. Understandably parents teach a girl this so she won’t get embarrassed. They are trying to help. What they are really doing is the opposite, and in doing so instilling a lifelong bad habit. Why are periods a secret? Why do the pad and tampon ads stress how “discrete” their new and improved design is? Why do we need to be quiet about this at all? Not that any of you are due a biology lesson, but the reason for menstruation is life. To create life. Everyone came from it; it is what we were conceived and incubated in until the day we were thrust into the light of the world. So why is it acceptable for men to get uncomfortable with the sheer mention of it? Why are women schooled as to how to accommodate a man’s immaturity, instead of giving boys a lesson in how to grow the hell up? If someone asked for a plaster nothing would be thought of a friend handing one over in public, so why the super-spy-plot to pass on a tampon? And how is it we can respond honestly about the reasons for our sickly appearance when it is a stomach bug or flu, but we can’t admit the truth when it is crippling cramps and back pain? Especially when men walk around all day dipping a hand into their pants to scratching their nether regions, but that is perfectly normal… I’ll tell you this much, Ladies, the next time I am suffering for the sake of my ability to create life, I shan’t be doing so silently. #SorryNotSorry. What else do we, women, apologise for? How about looking like a woman? Actress and UN Women Goodwill Ambassador, Emma Watson, made an incredibly powerful speech this time last year when urging people to Fight for Gender Equality; “When I was 8, I was confused for being called bossy because I wanted to direct the

PHOEBE: Ya-huh, all the time, cause they are the lightning bearers. PHOEBE: Oh yes. Oh and, the part about how they’re always like drinking from out of the pool of inner power, but God forbid we should take a sip. JOEY: Anybody want a croan. PHOEBE: Ok, this is a typical lightningbearer thing. Right there, it’s like, um, ‘Hello, who wants one of my phallic shaped man cakes?’

plays that we would put on for our parents, but the boys were not. When at 14, I started to be sexualized by certain elements of the media. When at 15, my girlfriends started dropping out of sports teams because they didn’t want to appear muscly. When at 18, my male friends were unable to express their feelings. I decided that I was a feminist.” The part of Miss Watson’s speech which strikes me the most, is that she was sexualized by the media at age fourteen. Now I want you to think back, what age were you when you were first cat-called? At what age did your skirts stop being cute and start being regarded with judgement as people began to talk and assume what “kind of girl” you are? The horrifying truth is that this happens very young and pretty much overnight. Puberty hits and BAM! You’re a sexual being now, never to be thought of as anything else. Young girls are watched and judged for what they may or may not do in the future. “Look at her, eleven and already wearing a bra… her parents are in for trouble!” What is she supposed to say? “Oh dear, I am so sorry my breasts started developing at age eleven.” No way. “Thirteen and wearing lipstick? Skank!” Uh, no… thirteen and experimenting with make-up. A girl becoming a woman is a long and stressful process. The last thing she needs is an obligation to apologise for what she has no control over. #SorryNotSorry. So by now you will have realised this piece is revolving around feminism. It’s almost a dirty word. People are afraid to identify themselves as a feminist for fear of what it means. Yeah, there are extreme forms of feminism, we only need to look at F.R.I.E.N.D.S for that; Remember the iconic episode? While the boys were all wrapped up with how to get rid of Eddie, the girls were reading Be Your Own Windkeeper; MONICA: Rachel you have to read this book. It’s called Be Your Own Windkeeper. It’s about how women need to become more empowered. PHOEBE: Yeah and oh, and but there’s, there’s wind and the wind can make us Goddesses. But you know who takes out wind? Men, they just take it. RACHEL: Men just take out wind?

Great as this episode is (it’s hilarious!) it is important to note that being a feminist is not about man hating. Quite the opposite actually. As Emma Watson pointed out feminism is not only focused on women’s issues, it is also focused on ensuring men can be free to express themselves without a fear of being thought of as womanly. Gender is a spectrum, like a colour wheel, there is no black and white as to how to be a man or how to be a woman. Being a nurse, being a good cook or being a good parent are not female traits, just as being strong, good with cars or a doctor are not male traits. My interpretation of feminism is equality considering the circumstance. For example, when it comes to a six foot two man and a five foot one woman, who should lift the box up the stairs? The one who is most capable. This isn’t demeaning or sexist, it just makes sense. So if, given my slight stature, I am struggling with my bags someday and a man offers to help me, I shall take him up on that. Then again, if my house is on fire and a female firefighter shows up, you can be damn sure I won’t be turning her away! #SorryNotSorry. There is one thing that I choose whether or not to do every single day, and regardless of my choice I am judged, harshly. It is a choice we all make; whether or not to wear makeup. Now I will be honest, I love makeup. I watch makeup tutorials, I read reviews, and I love nothing better than having twenty euro to splash out on a new MAC lipstick! Makeup to me is fun. It is a form of expression. It is liberating. In saying that, I don’t feel the need to wear it every day. If I don’t feel like wearing it, I will happily go to town, meet friends, do a bit of shopping and even have a bite to eat with no makeup on. It is not a crutch for me. Yet, whichever one I choose, certain groups always thinks I am wrong. If I don’t wear makeup I am seen as unprofessional, unpolished and a mess. If I do, I am seen as a subscriber to a patriarchal society. The important thing for each and every one of us to remember is that your life is what you make of it. Do what you want to do, do it for you, and don’t apologise. #SorryNotSorry. wOhmagazine.ie 21

his month I have put some lilac streaks in my hair and so have been experimenting with purple eye make-up and indeed lipstick. I’ve always known that lilac and purples suit almost everyone but find that blue eyes look great while using them. If you are unsure about purple lipstick you can opt for a safe choice in Flormar. The Cherry revolt shade delivers softly textured bright colour that glides seamlessly on to lips to create mega impact and shine. It retails at €6.95. If you want a sparkly lilac toned shadow you cannot beat Idol eye by Mac, this is a single shadow that I blend with a flat black to create smoky glamour. To complete the look Sleek Make up blush trio in pink lemonade is the ultimate girly blush palette. It has two powders and a cream blush to keep you looking flushed and blushed no matter what your mood is. Take the change in season as your call to action for a new make-up look. This season sees the return of the lip gloss and the up-style and I really don’t think it is a coincidence that these two staples make a return at the same time. All of the up-styles are sleek and high and the glosses are the same. So Autumn is all about change, book a make-up lesson and a hair appointment.

Red for Danger... This month I have chosen the brand new Nutribullet in cherry as my favourite red product. It helps you get glowing skin by offering an easy juice and smoothie option. So although it is a kitchen appliance it is one of my favourites.

No month would be complete without some skincare tip and advice and the new ARTISTRY Hydra-V™ skincare range is a scientific breakthrough in skin hydration, inspired by a NobelPrize-winning discovery in technology by Dr. Peter Agre on the function of biological water channels called aquaporins, which work like irrigation to transport water across all cell membranes I got to try the Hydra-V Nourishing Gel Cream (€45.00), this fortifies the moisture barrier for enhanced suppleness and invigoration. It’s suitable for all skin types, it’s creamy, yet sheer gel provided long-lasting hydration after one use. It is a sublime base for make-up.

They see me strobing….

Strobing has literally taken the beauty world by storm of late and to be honest I can see why. Light added to the face screams youth and with a giant leap in the amount of women including myself trying to dip into the pot of youth it is no surprise that this youth enhancing technique is now being used in homes the length and breadth of Ireland. There are many ways to strobe my lovely readers and I am here to show you every way possible. First you can strobe under the makeup by adding an illuminating primer such as the aptly named Strobe cream by MAC. This veil of luminosity will transform your face into a light catching orb of fabulousity before you even have a chance to apply your foundation. If you like a pearlescent finish then the Buff Make up Glo in Movie star is the base for you. I like to add a little drop of this into my BB cream to in order to make my skin look healthy and radiant. It looks great under the brow bone too. 24 WOhmagazine.ie

Apart from being completely blown away by Inglot on social media I have also in recent months been blown away by their products most notably their setting spray. This fine mist helps to set your make up including eyes and lips to perfection. The directions tell you to spray it when your make up is complete, holding it 8-10 inches from your face. Another use I have found for this wonder product is when you are reapplying make up, from the office to head out afterwards. If you spray a little and then buff in your powder or foundation it blends like a dream! It’s a great time saver rather than removing the whole lot and reapplying.

Pamper the Glam

Spas of the world is a new range from The Body Shop which allows you to create a spa environment at home. So with that in mind I did my own pamper the glam this month. There is a wide range of products sourced ethically from all over the world but I must tell you about my favourite regime. It is the revitalizing one which uses Dead Sea salt scrub to exfoliate and invigorate the skin, a gorgeous clay mask from Morocco to detoxify the skin and then a beautiful oil from Thailand to replenish and relax the skin as well as optimum hydration. These beautiful products will give you great results at a fraction of the cost of a spa treatment. It is also worth investing in the brush to apply the clay mask as it is less wasteful of the product and also ensures even coverage. I like it as it feels like a real treat.

The tools are the most important thing about your make up. A bad workman always blames her tools but fear not, Blank Canvas have you covered. They popped onto the market in 2011 and have won several awards and this is why I wanted to cast my eye over their products. They have two ranges, the regular range and the vegan range. The regular range is comprised of natural hair, which includes goat and pony hair. The synthetic range which is vegan friendly uses nylon and taklon. I loved all of the brushes and it was really hard to choose a favourite so I chose three. The F30 is a flat top sculpting brush which is great to contour. The €23 is a great pencil brush for the precision application near the tear duct area and under the lower lash line. And finally the F20 foundation brush which is far better than a stippling brush because the bristles are a consistent length and so perfect for applying all types of foundation. For more brushes check out their website www.blankcanvascosmetics.com If your approach is more traditional you may love the Bobbi Brown shimmer brick. This multi tonal light catcher is available in several shades from nudes, cool pinks to warm peaches. Nectar is my Holy Grail highlighter and I am due to buy another one soon, my last purchase having been around 18 months ago. So it is quite thrifty on the pocket too. With any of these products you can just use them lightly. My favourite areas to strobe are cheekbones, forehead, brow bone and cupids bow. If you are nervous start by adding illuminator to your foundation and take it from there. In short strobing is all about adding light as opposed to shine and that is why many people love it so much? It can make dull or dry skin look beautifully healthy and oily skin look subtlety healthy.

BEAUTY

Glamity Jane

Tontouring…. Yes Really As a Snapchat addict I was both mesmerised and delighted at Marissa Caters Tontouring idea. It really is quite simple. You use the gradual tan all over your face to create a subtle hue and then the one hour darker ones to contour your cheekbones jawline and hairline. I tried this out using the following Cocoa Brown Gentle Bronze and the One Hour Tan with the Nima domed Kabuki brush. It worked a treat. I also used it to contour my collarbones and it just worked out perfectly. I love the idea for holidays or for under BB cream to give you Debbie Harry Cheekbones. It has become quite the trend on snapchat. You can follow mw @maryjaneoregan where you will see me try out products for the first time and give my musings on texture and smells.

You cannot beat a good pigment and when two landed on my doormat from Fuschia make up I was delighted and anxious to try them. We all know that loose pigment can be messy but if you do your eye make-up first you will never have this problem. I’d suggest using a base colour all over the lid, like an off white or cream. I must admit to being super impressed by the payoff in colour from them and the blendability. I used a densely packed brush to apply them by pressing them onto the socket with little patting motions. There are 19 shades and they retail at €12.95 each.

Trending Right here

SoSu the new range of nail polishes to hit the market have launched a new collection of really wearable shades for Autumn. Normally I find nail polishes can be too bright or unwearable as I am fussy however Suzanne Jackson has got her collection bang on trend. My favourite colour is called who’s the boss and this burgundy tone would satisfy even the most discerning girl boss. If you’re up for nude then Nude Freak would suit you. I wear these on my toes all of the time and find they don’t chip as the topcoat is pretty chip resistant. Finally Heavens stairway is a dove grey colour that would look amazing with double denim.

And finally who has seen the trends for hair for AW15? Everyone is going to be on point with slicked back ponytails and gelled chignons, although not personally a fan I can see these trends really working for a lot of people. For now? I will just stick to writing about make up.

2015 #Cloggers, The Market Cafe, Perry Street, CORK The ‘Cloggers’ (Cork Bloggers) meet up took place in Cork’s most trendy café Perry Street Market Café. There were a dynamic bunch of bloggers from city and county all there to mingle and chat about favourite subjects, beauty products and clothes. Although no longer tending to my own lovely blog as I should, I went along on behalf of #WOh magazine to check it out. There were presentations from Bia Beauty, who’s business is going from strength to strength and is based in my hometown of Cork and Elizabeth Arden, who played a game of roll the dice to win and iconic 8 hour cream, and model Nathan Adams came by to chat about social media. Anyone who purchased a ticket on the night got to have Prosecco and some sumptuous treats in the form of finger food and sweet treats. This won’t be the last meet up, as the party went on until the late hours. Marie and Richael were kind enough to give me a great goody bag and the products within will feature on these pages over the coming months.

isa Fitzpatrick is a diligent woman. Aside from being a best-selling author, TV fashion stylist and consultant, radio broadcaster, on the road with her ‘Fashion Fix’ workshops nationwide - the busy mum of two takes it all in her stride. She reveals that practicing transcendental mediation on a daily basis helps her to cope with her demanding schedule. When I caught up with Lisa she tells me “I do transcendental mediation ever y day for 15 minutes. It gives me ‘Me time’ and it helps me to clear my mind and my busy brain.” She has car ved a niche for herself over recent years and has become a regular TV Fashion Stylist fixture. She best known for her regular slots on TV3’s Ireland AM and Xposé. Aside from this, she has presented a number of style slots and makeovers on ITV’s This Morning. She also featured on ITV’s most recent series of the Xtra Factor. What sets Lisa aside from her peers is her ability to diversify. Lisa is also a best-selling author with two books, Enjoying Style and Fashion and Diet SOS. If this wasn’t enough earlier this year she has recently added a another string to her bow. She has teamed up with leading department store, Arnotts for her Fashion Fix Roadshow, which takes place at select venues across the countr y. It’s a great opportunity for guests to enjoy hands on style and fashion advice with Lisa. So far this year, she was

joined by hundreds of ladies in Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Kilkenny and Galway on her Fashion Fix Roadshow. Highlights included Tanning Demonstrations with Cocoa Brown Tan, Hair and Make-up Masterclasses with Brown Sugar, Fashion Shows and Surprise Celebrity Guests who included Louis Walsh, Kathr yn Thomas, Derek Mooney, Baz Ashmawy and Alan Hughes. Essentially, it’s a fashion packed day, where the attendees leave feeling inspired and equipped with invaluable fashion for ward tips.

“If you don’t like who you see in the mirror, how can you expect anyone else to like you?” When I asked Lisa what is the top fashion advice she would like to offer discerning fashionistas nationwide, she advised me to not succumb to trends, and decluttering your wardrobe before you embark on a shopping spree is key. She advised “Only buy what you need. See what you are really going to use - have all of those items at hand. Focus on shopping for items that suits your budget and your own style. Be a savvy shopper, don’t conform to trends and only wear clothes that suit your shape and make you feel good.” She adds “If you don’t like who you see in the mirror, how can you expect anyone else to like you?”

Lisa Fitzpatrick Lisa started her career in wholesale manufacturing and supplying the largest store groups in Ireland. Following this she was the owner of a hair dressing Salon and a ladies boutique for seven years prior to operating as a dedicated stylist. She lives in Dublin and has been married for over 14 years to hotelier husband Paul Fitzpatrick, Managing Director of the Fitzpatrick Lifestyle Hotels. They live in Dublin with their two children Sophie (12) and Dalton (10) who have just started back at school, which no doubt is keeping her on her toes. She tells me “I excel when I’m challenged. My husband and I are great - we help each other. I have lots of great friends and we share school runs. I find having a group of great friends that can help each other makes a massive difference. Women are a great support for each other. It’s wonderful to have a support. It’s easier to juggle all with good time management and a support mechanism. “In particular she cites American talk show hosts Oprah Winfrey and Ellen Degeneres as being an inspiration to her.

“I think Oprah and Ellen are incredible women they give so much back. They set up charities, they are always supporting women and always giving women a chance. Ellen is a great women in particular to advocate a product by promoting them for up and coming women in business. Most importantly she doesn’t take herself seriously. Her most inspirational stand out quote is ‘Be kind to one another’”

“I believe in following your dreams - you can dream the dream but only you can make it a reality.” From speaking to Lisa, it was quite evident that she projects a ‘can do’ attitude. “I believe in following your dreams - you can dream the dream but only you can make it a reality.” she says. For women out there who want to make a big change in their life for the better but maybe a bit apprehensive, Lisa suggests “Go for it. Never be afraid to fail, give it your best shot.” To escape the pressures of the world, aside from her daily meditation it appears that Lisa likes to dance like no one is watching. She concludes “I love to dance, I love Ministr y of Sound, Beyonce, and Rihanna. Ever y morning when I wake up, I put music on. Music is a big part of my life.”

Don’t follow trends: If you wear a hat, wear one that you know makes you feel and look good.

Avoid sales: Only purchase something if it’s an item that you wanted at full price and it was out of your budget. Remember sale items are often pieces that no one else wanted. Avoid getting stuck in a look: The best way to check this, is to look back at old photos. If you look the same now as you did years ago it’s time for a change. Declutter: Go through your wardrobe before you shop and spend money. Break in new shoes: Never wear new shoes to an important event such as a wedding. Wear them before hand as will need to be broken into first.

resh from his appearance on TV3s Seven O’Clock Show, I caught up with Irish Author and Actor David Gilna, about his extraordinary life changing experience at the hands of Mother Nature that has left Hollywood calling! David you started your acting career with the National Performing Arts School run by Colin Farrell’s brother Eamon and his business partner Jill Doyle in Dublin, how did you end up there? One of the lads in school told me about The Factory Studios where the classes were based and asked would I go in for the crack, I was a complete football head and had no interest in the Arts what so ever, but I went along and got the bug straight away. From there I went to Colaiste Dhualaigh in Coolock to do Theater Studies for a year. You didn’t begin to write though until your near death experience in America, the basis of your life going forward to date, what happened? I was on a J1 Visa in South Boston in 2004 and I was lucky enough to get a job working as a 30 WOhmagazine.ie

stage hand for the movie ‘Dawn Of the Dead’. One beautiful sunny day I was on a balcony three floors up and I went to move a ladder, then out of the blue as the term goes, the lightning struck... It went into my right hand and out my left foot and I burned from the inside out, I was frazzled. My Guardian Angel, whether you believe in them things or not, is the only reason why I’m here, its a miracle.

this day it all seems so surreal. When the play hit London some of the right people came to see it, including a Hollywood Producer with a big cigar, he saw it and then took me for dinner, the next day he said “Hey Kid we want to turn your play into a Movie”, I was like give over, this can’t be real... and within a week I signed the contract. The film goes into production next year.

That must have been very scary, what exactly did you feel? Well I blacked out because of the pain, it was unreal. I’ve never experienced anything like it, the heat from my body felt like I was on fire, thats the only way I can describe it! I went into a coma for 24 hours after and ended up paralyzed from the neck down. The doctors weren’t sure if I was ever going to walk again, but in a funny way all I was concerned about at the time was would I ever get an erection again and thankfully I’m ok in both cases.

That it absolutely fantastic do you have to keep pinching yourself? What involvement will you have in final movie? I do keep pinching myself, I’m sore from the marks of my nails to be honest. I wrote the screen play and will be a creative consultant on the final movie, but from here on in the studio just takes it, so I will just have to wait to see how close to the original they keep it.

You must of spent some time in rehabilitation, how was that for you? Yes I did and sadly I became very reclusive while learning to walk again but it was here that I began to write, and out of it came the play about my experiences, which I brought back to Ireland. It went on tour and was performed at the Electric Picnic festival and Fossests Circus to good acclaim, it then moved it to London, where I was living at the time! It was in London that your dream of turning your play into a movie became a reality? Strangely enough it was, but to

I have to ask do you know what actor is playing you? I have no idea, but I can’t say yet. When you sign the NDA (Non Disclosure Agreement) they don’t tell you things, but when I find out the whole world will know, as I really can’t keep a secret for the life of me, but it really is very exciting. Does the movie it have a working title? The working title is ‘A Gift of Lightning, why not us?’ But that could, and probably will change by the time the film actually comes out. I’m very blessed to be alive and just happy either way to watch this Journey. Its my life story, its about family and friends drinking in the Lord Mayors Pub in Swords, having the banter, and of course the lightening and I cant wait to see the finished cut. We want to wish David the very best of luck with the movie, and we are sure here at #WOh that its going to be massive success worldwide upon its release! Feminism

– Has It Gone Too Far?

By Michaela Deane raised an astounding £3,800 while running the marathon, which is a great achievement. If this was an issue she felt so strongly about, could she have donated the money to an organisation that deals with these problems instead? Gandi also said that she ran without a tampon for sisters who, “Despite cramping and pain, hide it away and pretend like it doesn’t exist.” Blood is meant to be cleaned up (or hidden away, as Gandi puts it). It is natural yes, but it is also unsanitar y, and not to mention the fact that it can ruin clothing. While many extreme feminists argue that it should not be seen as unclean, the reality is that it is. There’s a reason you’re told to wash your hands after changing a tampon.

F

eminism has come in leaps and bounds, and has really advanced in recent years. Feminists have called out rape culture, joined in the struggle for marriage equality and are working hard to repeal the 8th amendment. While I fully agree and support the above, I can’t help but ask – has feminism gone too far? People are just starting to understand and back up the work of feminists, but there are women out there who are harming the legibility of their hard work. Some weeks ago the world was shocked and dare I say it, slightly appalled to hear that Kiran Gandi, a Har vard Business School Graduate had ran the 26.2 mile London 32 WOhmagazine.ie

Marathon on her period, without the use of a tampon. “Free bleeding” has become common among extreme feminists nowadays, and under a post titled “Feminism” Gandi wrote, “I got my flow the night before and it was a total disaster but I didn’t want to clean it up. It would have been way too uncomfortable to worr y about a tampon for 26.2 miles.” Gandi argued that she did it for the women out there who don’t have access to tampons or pads, but I have to ask, was it really necessar y? There are plenty of women out there who don’t have access to food, but do we star ve ourselves to raise awareness? No, because it wouldn’t make sense. Gandi

Gandi and other extreme feminists have tried to break the stigma attached to periods with their “free bleeding” efforts. But is there even that big of a stigma attached to it anymore? Buying a packet of tampons doesn’t embarrass me, and I’m happy to talk to my friends about what an emotional mess I am during my time of the month. These forms of feminism are extreme and unnecessar y, and are being taken too far. As I mentioned at the start of this article, there are so many amazing things that feminists have helped to achieve over the last few years. When people label incidents like this as feminism related, they’re disguising the real meaning of feminism – equality. By partaking in ridiculous trends like this, we’re damaging the reputation and legibility of feminists who are tr ying to make a positive change in our lives.

BEAUTY

Get the look with Tiger Tutorials

To create this bridal look I started by cleansing and moisturising the skin. This is very important to create a flawless base for your make up.

FACE:

I applied an Inglot primer all over the face and used a MAC NC 40 foundation that matched Paulina’s (from Lockdown Models) skin tone. I then used Inglots under eye concealer in shade 90 to brighten the eyes. As this was a bridal make up I wanted to keep the make up light but create a good coverage.

EYES:

I filled in Paulina’s brows with an Inglot brown liner gel. I applied Benefit Hoola on Paulinas crease to create a transition colour. I use MUD expresso on the outer eyelids and blended the colour into the crease, I then took MACs pick me up and applied it to the inner corner of the eyes blending everything throughout the application. I used Ingots liner gel 77 which is a matte black and completely waterproof (important for the bride) and lined it across the eyelid creating the slightest wing! I applied false lashes in 101 Eylure and used a Benefit (waterproof) mascara.

CHEEKS:

I used a little bit of Benefits Hoola to contour the cheeks, keeping it very subtle, I popped a little bit of MAC blush on the cheeks and a hint of shimmer on the cheekbones.

LIPS:

I lined the lips with Rimmel stay on lip contour and applied Rimmels APOCALIPS matte lipstick in (nude).

JUNE RODGERS

June Rodgers She is long established as one of Ireland’s top comic performers, having regularly appeared on TV, radio, in films and a full range of stage productions from musical theatre to pantomime. #WOh’s Robbie Kane caught up with the most famous women to come out of Tallaght Dublin bar none, Comedian and Actress June Rodgers in The Red Cow Moran Hotel, Dublin recently to see how things were developing since her infamous appearance as ‘Jacinta O’Brien’ on RTE1s Late Late Show in the 90s. 38 WOhmagazine.ie

JUNE RODGERS gang ended up, one night after filming coming for something to eat in my house in Firhouse or as some people say the foot of the Dublin Mountains, and the French Actor ‘Arno Chevrier’ that was in it insisted on cooking which was great and we all ended up having a sing song in the garden and then he started joining in...in French! and we were all just looking at each other going, whats he singing about? Brendan just said “mammy is bored now” as we couldn’t understand what he was saying, you had to have been there, but it was very funny.

You where grafting away before we were introduced to you on The Late Late Show back in the day, what were you at? Well I started all those years ago in the John Player Tops which was a big big thing at the time, I was working in a Japanese company called Fijitsu Micro Electronics on the Green Hill Road and they just decided to take part in it. I’d never done anything like it before, I never even went to dance school, I just got involved with it for something to do. I was put in the back row with all the lanky and little fat ones and we where left swaying for six months and that’s all we got to do. Anyway as the years went by I met up with two guys Martin Higgins who still writes with me and Tom Roche who created the first Jacinta O’Brien and she just took off. I was out performing in Clontarf one night and Gay Byrne was in audience and the following Friday I was on The Late Late Show, which was absolutely terrifying. He was such a supporter of fresh new talent, which you don’t see that much of no more, whats happened? Well I think what happened was It changed when reality TV came in, but its definitely making a come back now, you just have to see all the program’s that are out like ‘Sunday Night at the Palladium’ and the Ant and Dec Shows which are into variety. I was born and bred with variety in the 70’s, 80’s and even the 60’s, its what we used to watch on the TV and I think the likes of Gay Byrne and Pat Kenny where fans of it too! The character ‘Fat Annie’ in the Movie ‘Agnes Browne’ which you played, was a favourite of mine, which was Directed and Produced by Hollywood A Lister Angelica Houston who also starred in it! It was based on the book ‘The Mammy’ written by Brendan O’Carroll who also along with Ray Winstone appeared in the film. That must of been so much fun, what are your memories from that time? Well firstly I had to eat my way into the part, as I was a size 6... what are you laughing at?? It was great film and a brilliant story, that’s what I love about Brendan’s writing its funny, then its sad… It tells a lovely story of two women who bonded so well together. The

You’ve done TV, but now most recently your on ‘Funny Fridays’ with Joe Duffy on RTE Radio 1. Your fellow comedian PJ Gallagher co hosts a breakfast show on Classic Hits 4fm, would this be something that may interest you in the future? I really don’t know, you never say never in this business, I’d love to try something different ya know. I suppose I got into this business totally by chance, as teenagers you always stood in front of the mirror with the Denman hairbrush singing into it thinking you were going to be a superstar one of these days, but anything that comes my way, I’d definitely try it and be delighted to. Your cabaret shows are renowned, people love them. You have one coming up soon in the Red Cow Moran Hotel Dublin, do you enjoy it? Well there’s a lot of hard work that goes into it, I change the show every year which puts an awful lot of pressure on you. You’re trying to up the anti from the year before and then people go, you’re not going to top that one and then you do. Its all to do with a great team of people, as I’ve mentioned Martin Higgins, I couldn’t do it without Martin, he knows what i’ll do and what I won’t do. Andy O’Callaghan has been my musical Director for the last fifteen years, Brenda Brooks who is an Actress as well as a Singer, we met during panto days , we’re best of pals, she Produces it with me. In all there’s about twenty people working on it including cast

and dressmakers. This year though we have The fabulous BBC Strictly Come Dancing’s Tristan MacManus from Bray who is going to Choreograph the show. So what we can look forward to from the show, can you tell us? Yes well, we are kicking of in The Red Cow Inn on November 27th, and as Tristan is on board this year, expect a big ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ opening, then we will do a Motown segment as everyone loves Motown. People lose concentration very quickly theses days, from the likes of remote controls etc, so normally I’d do a about twenty different characters in the show, we try to change the scene and costumes every few minutes until we finish on a big Rock’n’Roll Finale. Its great been at the Red Cow because its so accessible and a lot of people come from all over the country. Unfortunately this year I won’t be travelling to The Silver Springs Hotel in Cork for the Christmas, so hopefully the people of Cork will come up for the November shows. Couples come out, girls come out, groups come out, everyone comes out! Its a show for everybody and its guaranteed Irish! Now finally you also have a DVD coming out which will be a great stocking filler for the Chrimbo? Thanks very much for mentioning it, yes its called ‘The Name is Bond, Oliver Bond’. Its a character that I do, and which you will see this year on stage, its (the DVD) just parts from the show, that people want to rob off ya because they want to see again. Well we want to wish June and the cast a very successful run at The Red Cow Moran Hotel Dublin in November. DATING

Mata Hari

I am just a girl like you. I work in the same job, make the same money, wear the same clothes, have the same friends and think the same things you all do. What’s my definer? Well I say it like it is, I have zero social filter and I’m a little crude…. Ok I’m a lot crude, but my honesty has always served me well. I mean it’s my honesty that has me here baring my soul to all. My sole purpose is to lay it all out on the line, to be brave enough to say the things we all think everyday but just never think we can say out loud! Well brace yourself Ireland because it’s about to get juicy, naughty and I’m not gonna lie. Perhaps at times I might be a little sordid, but I try not to take it all so seriously. You might hate what I’m saying but I’d rather you have a giggle and then ponder on it for a while. That will be enough for me…and hopefully for you!…As we do say here at #Woh Magazine…Lets Get People Talking!

M

y first column was always going to be a tough one to write because I have so much to say and share with you all but like a reliable orgasm I want to build a bit of momentum with you first. Slow and steady always wins the race…. So then what to talk about? And then like lightning hitting the tip of a penis, I have one for you. I would like to dish the dirt about my favourite guilty pleasure… Tinder.

I love Tinder. I mean in fairness what’s not to love, I can look like a bulldog chewing on a wasp and still sit in the comfort of my own lair judging people solely based on their looks… Genius!! When I first encountered Tinder it was taboo as having a tattoo in the eighties. All the cool people pretended it was for hideous loft trolls who couldn’t pull on a night out, so needed to resort to pre-filtered pictures and Internet downloaded tag lines in order to snag a match. But do not lie as soon as everyone realised it was an easier way to get laid without having to put in the groundwork of a night out. Tinder had captured its key audience. What Tinder has done for this generation is taken our self important need to be validated by other people based on our physical appearance and made an app of it. Still to this day when I meet people on nights out or maybe get introduced to a friend’s new squeeze and I ask “oh so where did you guys meet?” As soon as I sense that shifty, guilty awkwardness I’m like “got it, say no more lads.” But now come on, seriously who actually gives a sh*t? If you’re able to have a successful relationship or even a bang tidy one night stand because of an app rather than ten cocktails and a couple of jager bombs, then isn’t that not only your own bloody business but also dare I say its cost friendly. Lads will know this but girls on a night out are like a herd of gazelles around a watering hole in the Serengeti, we travel in packs, stride majestically around the place like we’re too good for everyone and it’s often difficult to separate the weak one from the herd. When you do finally get an in with one of us it’s like you’re on tribunal with the other four judging, analysing you’re every kind gesture. I genuinely don’t know how lads do it, before you know it you’re plying five girls with shots just in the hope of riding one! My view - save your self the hassle - ain’t nobody got time for that. Tinder allows you to cut all the bullsh*t! You can quickly establish who’s ‘dtf’ and who’s looking for their Prince Charming and depending what you’re 48 WOhmagazine.ie

into you can dabble with both. I have known people who have formed very successful lasting relationships because of Tinder. I have also known people to have some of the most mind blowing unhindered sexual experiences of their lives because of it too. There is no shame or blame in either. Being a Tinder dabbler myself has allowed me to assess both sides of the coin and to have some seriously funny stories to boot. Fifty shades of Tinder is no lie, I have experienced some crazy shit. I have chatted with singles, married, gay, straight, celebs, nobody’s and every one in between. It cracks me up when I sit and scroll through the different profiles because there are always a few guaranteed to form a pattern. I can now divulge the five stages of Tinder lads that are always bound to crop up and ladies you’re lying if you say you haven’t had at least one if not all of these!

1. Where’s Wally Profile: this one is possibly the most popular and yet never fails to crack me up. It’s where the lad or lady knows they are not exactly packing in the looks department so they choose pictures where there are as many people in them as possible so to disguise their true selves, so then you end up having to play a process of elimination by trying to guess the common denominator in all six pictures, I’ll save you some time it is always, ALWAYS, the least attractive. You have been warned! 2. Barnyard B**ches Profile: this one is brilliant, it’s where the first profile picture will feature the owner along with some sort of animal. Dog, cat, pig, pigeon all a clever ruse to seduce you in by suggesting that if you are like Doctor friggin Dolittle you are a sensitive loving person wanting to share long walks on a beach and braid each other’s hair. When the reality is you’re really just hoping your pet of choice is cute enough that they

won’t have noticed that you look like a serial killer. 3. Gotta Get Them Gains Profile: the token gym selfies. Lads are definitely the guiltiest here. Look I have hopped myself up on enough ‘roids’ to take down Conor McGregor and I probably have a penis the size of a cocktail sausage because of it. Seriously do girls still like muscles? Honestly it’s not my thing. I don’t want a lad who can bench me but might as well have a finger instead of a willy! No, no this is not good. Gains traumatise me!! 4. The Time Travellers Wife Profile: look at me on this beach in Brazil; here I am swimming with dolphins off the coast of Hawaii, and now I’m snowboarding in the Alpes. I get it your cultured, amazing, so what? Show me your face or you will forever be on these holidays ALONE!! 5. The Holy Grail Profile: ahhhh Tinder Gold…. So so rare! I once met a guy that my opening line to was “you’re not real” because he was so attractive. This is not a frequent occurrence but when it does happen grab that sh*t with both hands and make the best of it because they are few and far between. I’ve been blessed to have struck gold on more than one occasion and the outcome has always been majestic. This guy literally looked as though his face had been chiselled by angels and trust me the meet up didn’t disappoint either. He is a well known character in Ireland’s social scene and so led me to wonder what’s wrong with him that he needs an app to meet girls?? I mean I’ve figured out now that he’s a bit of a knob and if he was chocolate he would eat his own arm but he’s cracked it, Tinder is a way of having what he wants, when he wants, with zero effort other than being hot required. So all and all Tinder is not the enemy here, society is! Society makes us feel bad for searching for love and sex in unorthodox way. I’m sorry I don’t live in 1950’s Ireland and didn’t meet the love of my life across a crowded church in mass but get with the times people. Embrace your inner creep if for no other reason than its just a bit of laugh!! My column will endeavour to explore and expose all of our dirty laundry, to shoot from the hip and have no holds barred. I’m not taking prisoners, I’m simply keeping you in the loop. Until next time…..

B

allet fans are in for a real treat this November when Cork City Ballet performs a full length production of Swan Lake in the Cork Opera House from 18th to 21st November. Even if you think you know Tchaikovsky’s classic “Swan Lake”, arguably the world’s most beloved ballet, few will be familiar with Cork City Ballet’s version.

Artistic Director Alan Foley and choreographer Yuri Demakov have re-produced the original Petipa/Vanov choreography where the prince destroys the evil sorcerer Rothard and is joyfully reunited with the Swan Queen. So if people are looking to enjoy the classics with a bit of a twist then this is the production for them! Cork City Ballet’s production promises to be spectacular, from the opulent costumes (direct from the Mariinsky Ballet in St. Petersburg) to the alluring sets, especially the opening scene’s gold-tinged, treeframed park in the shadow of the great castle and lake.

Tchaikovsky’s glorious score. Russian Ballet stars Ekaterina Bortyakova and her partner Akzhol Mussakhanov will dance the lead roles of Odette/Odile and Prince Siegfried, and they will be accompanied by soloists and a full corps de ballet.

All the well-loved elements are still in place including the “white acts”, with the famous cygnets dance for four girls; the exquisite white swan pas de deux; and the Act 3 climactic Black Swan pas de deux complete with thirty two fouettes all wrapped up in

Swan Lake opens at the Cork Opera House on Wednesday 18th November at 8pm until Saturday 21st November, with a matinee on Saturday at 2.30pm.

FASHION

Leather Weather!

By Clare Devereux

If there is one trend that’s everywhere this season it’s leather. It’s that perfect time of year to wear leather and the big trend this season is a leather skirt. The runway for Autumn/ Winter had a feast of leather dresses and skirts, tops with leather trim and the occasional leather piece of jewellery. I have a love for teaming leather with lace which you will see lots of on the high street stores as it toughens up the lace but softens the leather to give it a more romantic vibe. Not only are there some amazing styles and shapes out there from A-line to pencil but there are also many different colours to choose. Even though you can’t beat a black leather skirt there are so many great colours on the market to try. From burgundy and chocolate to cream and pink it’s time to have fun and play with some new shades this season. I have rounded up a few of my favourite leather skirts to get you through the season and bring you all the way into winter. Happy Shopping!

1

Teaming leather with lace is a great way to soften leather and toughen up lace. The colour of this dress is so expensive looking and has a designer feel at a fraction of the price. This short mini dress is perfect for a night out or teamed with tights and a top underneath for day time. Burgundy leather and lace mini dress from Zara €39.95

2

I am so in love with this skirt that I want to wear it every day! It’s the perfect shade of baby pink and the zip detail on the front and back gives a biker edgy vibe that keeps it from looking too sweet and sugary. I love to wear it with a white tee-shirt to keep it simple and let the skirt shine! Ava blush Pink Leather Skirt House of CB €95

3

Black leather skirts always have a fashion moment at this time of year and there are so many to try. This cute mini is both sweet and sexy at the same time. I love it with a black polo neck which makes it on trend and classy for Autumn. Black quilted leatherette skirt from Celeb Boutique €95

4

Why not liven up your wardrobe with a pop of pink! This shade of pink is one of my favourite colours and it brightens up every outfit from jeans and a blazer to a leather skirt and top. Pink court shoes €70 Aldo

Sigma Beauty 2X Spa Brush Cleaning Glove

I’m self-employed and some days I think I might move a lot but I’m kidding myself! I thought it would be really cool to see just how much exercise I was getting on my days working from home. The FitBit Zip available to buy in Lifestyle Sports at €60 is a gadget I think is worth the spend. If I’m not in my office then I’m dashing from meeting to meeting or out taking my dog Belle for a walk and the Zip tracks every step and calorie burnt! It’s discreet and you can clip it onto your bra or your belt. You can sync it automatically with your computer or you can sync via bluetooth to your phone so you can keep an eye on your activity levels and pursue your fitness goals. I cannot stress how important it is to clean your makeup brushes! If you’re not already using this brush-cleaning glove, you should definitely check it out. It’s made of silicone and the bristles of the brush really work the brush cleanser into the brushes to give them a deep clean! It’s also way faster and of course it’s available in pink!;) You can purchase yours on Cloud10Beauty.com at €40.95.

I’m not the best cook but I love my food and if your maths skills are anything like mine then this is going to be a worthy investment! The Drop’s Connected Scale is the perfect weapon in the kitchen to ensure you cook great food every time. The scales is wireless and connects to a recipe app and energy efficient! Available from HarveyNorman.ie at €99.

SilverCrest Headphones

Definitely my favourite product this month. I was gifted these at the Lidl AW fashion event last week. The headphones are bright orange, adjustable and comfortable to wear and in my opinion the sound quality is really good. I find they kind of block out exterior noise so if you want to get my attention pinch me- I get lost in the music! What I really like is that they have a built-in connector for a second set of headphones which is a great idea so your other half can sit back and enjoy the music or movie with you. At €11.99 it’s a smart buy however if your ears are those of a professional you might think differently!

HAIR

Get the Look

Its one of the new and latest looks of the season that has been inspired by Kate Middleton, The Duchess of Cambridge and its been labeled ’The Gringe’ as in a grown out fringe. The length of this fringe creates a softer look that will frame your face beautifully. It will make your look more versatile and will easily bring your from day time to night time with a simple push from to one side or the other.

1. 2. 3.

Grab the spritzing bottle The first point to remember is you can’t style a dry fringe. If you have wavy hair especially, you must wet or dampen the hair down with moisture before blowing drying it out. It will make everything easier and create a better finish. Work with nature Lots of women have cowslicks and sometimes, hair can just be plain old stubborn. That’s why it important to let the hair tell you where they want to go. Grab some Semi Di Lino Discipline smoothing cream, and apply just a tiny bit from the middle-length to the end of the fringe. Blow them out forward, then style them with the hair’s mood. You have to go with the hair not against it. Do not underestimate the importance of a good brush! Last but not least, you have to have the right tools. You need a good round brush to be able to stretch the fringe out. If you have a ‘Gringe’ about Kate’s length you need a ‘Large’ or ‘Xlarge’ size round brush. If the brush is too small, it will create too much bend and volume. You want a ‘Gringe’ like Kate’s to look smooth, natural and not poker straight, but with just a light curl at the end. A big round brush will do that for you.

PRODUCTS: SEMI DI LINO DISCIPLINE FRIZZ CONTROL SMOOTHING CREAM Smoothing cream, essential for smooth styling with flat iron or blow dryer, it makes brushing easier and protects the hair from heat. SEMI DI LINO DIAMOND CRISTALLI SPRAY Endless reflection of colour. Protects from humidity and external aggressions, which make hair dull and weak. SEMI DI LINO STYLING ILLUMINATING HAIRSPRAY Provides energy needed for a natural hold disappears with just a few brushes strokes.

AL PORTER

Al about Por ter

the audience as you would an old friend. He has made his mark on me, and it is just a matter of time before he takes over everywhere else! Traveling back to Dublin after his visit to Cork show in Cork Opera House, he gets straight to the juicy stuff as we gossip like school girls at a sleepover. “This is how I ended up in the Opera House, the guy who booked it met me in a nightclub and it was really loud, he said to me “Do you like Cork?” and I misheard him. I said “I love it!” You wouldn’t mind, but I don’t know any opera. Except “Just one Cornetto, give it to me. Just one Cornetto…” So I might try that! Or Go Compare, something from the Go Compare ad.” And what is your favourite Cornetto? Do you know what, I haven’t had a Cornetto in years. I was more of an ice pop than an ice-cream man. When I was on holidays I used to like a Calippo. Do you know what was an innocent childhood treat and I only realise now why they don’t sell them anymore? Do you remember Golly Bars? I only just realised what Golly meant last year when I said to Karl Spain “Ya wouldn’t get us a Golly Bar?” and he said “Ok, let’s sit down and have a chat about racism, Al!” I didn’t realise that was a weird negative term for black people and had been used in Minstrel Shows and all that, I didn’t even know it was a thing. And then it became an ice-cream, how terrifying is that? Anyway, they do still sell them, but they aren’t called that anymore.

The youngest comedian to sell out Vicar Street three nights in a row, comedian Al Porter treats #WOh Magazine to an exclusive interview. “Hi, howrya getting on, are you well?” Al greets me with the familiarity of an old friend. A show which sold out three nights in Dublin’s Vicar Street, ‘Al Porter Is Yours’ ensured Porter’s position as 56 WOhmagazine.ie

the youngest Irish comedian in history to headline (and sell out) the venue! On Friday 25th September he brought that same show to Cork, and I was privileged to be in attendance. Hilarious, fluid, easily improvised and unforgettable, Al engages

No, they don’t. Everything is gone so Politically Correct (P.C) now that you couldn’t possibly! Well look, I think that’s a good thing. I mean, my Nana, I used to me mortified going shopping with her. “Oh, I’m looking for a top.” “What kind of top?” “A brown one.” “What kind of brown?” and you just knew what was coming next! And you’re just there like “Oh my God, please don’t describe it with the “N” word, please! Please don’t describe what kind of top you’d like in a term that reflects slavery.” But anyway, we’re not like that anymore. No, we’re totally P.C now. But you kind of keep the whole scandalous comic thing going, don’t you? No, I’m just a bit old-school, a bit tonguein-cheek, but I would never offend anybody intently anyway. I’m just a big flirt! My stage show is just an excuse to try and meet somebody.

AL PORTER The last time I gigged in Cork I was in City Limits and I met a guy after the gig and he was absolutely gorgeous! And he said “Do you want to come back to my place?” so I was like “Oh my God, yes!” I couldn’t believe it, I was thinking he must be straight or something, he was a big rugby player and all. But he goes “Hold on, I’ll be back in a second”, and he disappeared. I was thinking he was going to come back in naked or something! But he came back in with his parents and was like “Look, its yer-man off The Late Late Show!” So I had only just done a two hour show, and I had to do another two hour show in his sitting room. But sure, why not! Did you ever think that you would be serenading Ryan Tubridy on his own show? I never thought that I would serenade Ryan Tubridy! As I say that if I play my cards right it’s not just the desk that he’ll be banging… But yeah, I really like Tubridy. We actually get on very well because we are in the same building when we do 2fm— even though he has been moved to Radio One now—but we do get on well, and he just knows that I am going to slag him and he always says to me “Don’t mention the whole thing with Aoibhinn”, and sure the first thing out of my mouth was “Oh I loved you when you were doing The Rose of Tralee, and you hosted it as well!” And he was just like “You’re such a B***icks.” Like they are on-again off-again, I’m not sure what the actual status is now, but Aoibhinn used to be my math teacher in St. Marks in Tallaght. I guess myself and Ryan have always had this weird sort of connection. I remember when I was small and I used to always be watching on a Saturday night, and it is such an old school thing to sing out The Late Late Show, I don’t think anyone has done it in years and I had all the grannies clapping and everything, but if you listen to the lyrics, I was about having revenge sex! It was actually a song about me riding other people to try to make my ex-boyfriend jealous. But there was just a load of 70 year olds being like “Oh fair play to him!” “Good man!” It is the usual granny thing where they just overlook everything they don’t want to know and they just see what they like. Yeah, well look, it’s me in a nutshell; the young people are listening to what I am saying, they say “Oh my God, he is talking about the things that actually go on in college, or go on in the bedroom or go on at Electric Picnic” but the older people are

Al Porter with #WOh staff writer Cliona Lawton seeing the suit and tie and the combed back hair and the showbiz—they are nostalgic for the kind of comedians that aren’t around anymore and I think they let me away with murder because of it! But do you know what, that is something that I actually found very strange, because a little birdie told me that you were thinking of becoming a priest before, and all I could see was this big Father Ted style with the jumper baked into the cake and Mrs Doyle coming with cups of tea… Oh like what Graham Norton did, Fr Noel, “Ah go on Ted, we’ll play a game!” and all that. I don’t know, I would have been more like Fr Trendy, Dermot Morgan, bringing hipsters back to mass and serving the Holy Wine in a jam jar like they do in hipster restaurants now. But yeah, I was going to be a priest. I loved the idea of two shows on Sunday, one on Saturday… like even when I was a reader my mam used to be mortified because I was so overdramatic with it. I honestly think you should do a show on what you would have been like as a priest. I actually said mass at Electric Picnic—I think I am the only comedian to ever do a full sermon at Electric Picnic—and I gave out communion to the audience. It was great craic, like a bit of a rock concert. I think the last time someone gave such an exciting mass was 1978 with John Paul II, and there was a whole load of John Paul’s born the year after, so just you wait and see because at Electric Picnic next year there is going to be a lot of people with little baby Porter’s and baby Al’s. So how did you get from priest to comic to TV and Radio presenter? It’s not too much of a jump because I do think that the church is very similar

to stand up. Tommy Tiernan takes the preaching element of it and I take the dressing up. But I think church is theatre and I was always obsessed with theatre. Anyway, to cut a long story short, I went to Trinity College, I studied Philosophy with a view to going to Maynooth to the Seminary, I hated it, it was way too serious; Ireland wasn’t coming out of its recession, so many people I knew were unemployed, so many people I knew were emigrating… and I just didn’t have an interest in sitting around learning about philosophers and becoming a priest and talking down to people. What I want to do is cheer people up. So the minute I dropped out of college I started doing open mic nights. When I wasn’t on stage I could be found beside someone who was. I was going to see any performer I could see; singer-songwriters, people doing karaoke, and I just fell in love with the idea of brightening people’s day. That was my calling. Then when I started doing stand-up I was very lucky, people were coming to and enjoying my shows, and Colm Hayes saw me at the Vodafone comedy festival last year and he took me on, which led to 2fm taking me on as a full time presenter… so it has just been a whirlwind, it’s been all go. It really was a wonderful accident. It really does seem to be after coming on so quick, because I think the first time I saw you was about three years ago on a little RTÉ competition looking for a new Irish comic and there you were telling everyone about your Da taking you to the Tallaght GAA Club. I know, I know, and it is something that I am a bit embarrassed about because I hadn’t had much time to grow as a comedian before I started getting on TV, and there is so much TV stuff that I did and think is cringe now! I’m only actually starting to be comfortable on television—because I have no problem telling people that I am just a lad giving it a go, you know? I was so nervous in front of the camera, it is the stage where I am most comfortable. But now I have even done some stuff with BBC Northern Ireland; I am not allowed to say what but I am allowed to say that I will be on BBC1 soon… so look out for that! And, you know, I’ve gigged in Edinburgh and I’ve got picked up by an agent over there—the same agent as Michael McIntyre and Johnathan Ross—an agency called Off The Curb, and I’m having a much better time on TV now, I am much more relaxed so if wOhmagazine.ie 57

AL PORTER there is anyone who saw me two years ago on tele, all I can say to them is “Give me another chance, I was only learning!” I think that is what people love about you, you’re career is after taking off and yet you’re still this Irish lad looking for a smooch and a bag of chips at the end of the night. Yeah, that’s true! And I have an awful reputation for going drinking with the audience after, so I am going to have to ask the Cork audience where is the best boozer? But I am well known at this stage among my peers, they’re like “Do you literally just invite the audience for a drink?” and I am like “Yep.” I do that all the time, in Athlone on a Tuesday night I was only meant to do an hour, I did two hours and then at the end of the show I got them to play Love Lifts Us Up Where We Belong, got a big burly lad from the audience to pick me up, and I said “Carry me to the pub!” and with that about seventy people walked over the road with me to the pub. It was only a tiny pub, we packed the place out. I had a couple of pints with everybody, photographs, chats, you name it I am into that. That is brilliant! You are actually kind of known as the stylish comic. Dara Ó Briain is always in his trademark suit, and Tommy Tiernan is always in jeans, but then you go to an Al Porter show and you’re wondering “I wonder what AL will wear tonight…” Oh really? I don’t know about whether or not I’m stylish but I have always liked my clothes. I think, as Liberace said, “Do you like it? You paid for it.” And that is kind of my thinking, you paid to see it, it might as well be good. I think if you can’t hide it, decorate it. I was even thinking of naming a show—do you remember they used to say “don’t mention the war”?—“Don’t Mention the War-drobe”. Louis Copeland does my suits—I always say if you repeat “Louis Copeland” into the mirror three times Conor McGregor appears—but yeah, I think it gives me confidence, and it’s nice for the audience to see a bit of showmanship as well. You’ve been known to call yourself “an old soul, already in your sixties”, is that what you meant, you’re just set in your way with your clothes and hair and what time you want your tea? Exactly, I’m very set in my ways, absolutely. I’ve listened to the same music since I was ten years old. I have great fun on the radio with the new bands, 58 WOhmagazine.ie

particularly the Irish ones, I’m friends with a lot of musicians in bands like Leaders of Men, Bipolar Empire, Little Green Cars, they wouldn’t be my kind of music but I love playing them on the radio because it’s great to get Irish bands out there. I’ve been listening to the same kind of jazz music since I was ten, I love the same suits, I don’t know why but there is just something very comfortable about it. I think I am a bit of an old woman on the inside, I’m an old woman trapped in a young man’s body. If you could pick anyone at all to collaborate with who would you want? Bette Midler. I would love to do a song with Bette Midler. I would love to do a comedy album called Swing While You’re Mingin’ with Bette Midler, for charity, we would give the money to some good cause because nobody should have to buy that for their own benefit. But yeah, I have been obsessed with her since I was a kid so that I would love to so. I love the idea of eventually having a television program, James Cordon has it, Jimmy Fallon has it, a show where you collaborate with the guests doing lip synching battles and duets and stuff like that. I think that’s fun, once you have them there you should have fun with them. I love Bette Midler! Especially her character Sophie… Oh yeah, Soph! I love all that, when she says “I’ll never forget it you know…” it’s great. I sometimes do a gig before for old folks and I’d get away with I’d say about 40% of my material but there is maybe 60% of it that I wouldn’t feel comfortable telling them, it was a bit modern for them. So what I do is mix up a load of old gags in there, they love that and I love telling the old gags. One of my favourite comics, well he wasn’t really a comic he was more of a raconteur, he’s from Cork, Neil Tóibín. He was very funny, he is a national treasure. I always thought he had great class and wonderful timing. None of the young people coming to the gig will remember Neil Tóibín, but I might try to channel him a bit. But that’s not to put anybody off, I’ll still keep the micky jokes and shouting. I’m old fashioned with an edge. One last question Al, can you tell us something nobody knows about you? Well, I have told a lot of people a lot of stuff about me because I am very honest—to my own detriment—so I tell reporters and journalists everything about me. Hmmm…

something that nobody knows about me… I got 575 points in my Leaving Cert. I’ve never used a single one of them but anyway! Actually, people might not know that I am really into playing soccer, I like to play soccer with my friends, sometimes I go and play Astro Turf soccer in Tallaght, and we have a six-a-side team. I even participated in the Irish Comedians verses Comedians of the Rest of the World soccer match at the Kilkenny Sky Cat Laughs Comedy Festival and nobody thought I would! I lasted the full 90 minutes, which nobody thought I would, and I even scored from the halfway line. So I’m not as bad as people think, which is something people probably wouldn’t know about me. I think there is a picture up on Facebook, because my lower half was football, I played in green shorts and socks, but my top half was a shirt and tie and a suit jacket. Classy to the end, so you are! Thank you so much for interviewing with us, and we look forward to catching you on your upcoming dates. Interview by Cliona Lawton

T

his month I entered the Wahl (UK) Ltd British & Irish Barber of the Year competition, the brief was to show your talent, technical ability, originality & creativity as well as current barber trends. Its a very serious competition in the barbering field with some serious top barber talent having entered. I was delighted when I got the call to say that I had made the final 8 out of over 150 entries, and I’m very proud to say that I am the 1st ever Irish finalist. I will be heading to London for Salon International where the winner will perform on stage with the Wahl Artistic Team. Its a great honour for me and The Crop Shop Barbers. I was delighted with my entry and would like to thank Project V Photography and Prohibition Design and my model Eamonn Baggot from vanity Vague Models for working with me on the photo shoot. The pictures are awesome. The Lions Barber Collective I’m very honoured to have been asked to be part of ‘The Lions Barber Collective’, a prestigious group similar to ‘The British & Irish Lions Rugby Squad’, but for barbers, who are putting together a ‘Look Book’ with all the proceeds being raised going to suicide awareness group Papyrus - prevention of young suicide. I suggested this charity as I felt its a great charity that both barbers and clients could relate to, as its a subject that we as barbers can help with as clients open up to us and don’t feel judged in a way they might with family or friends. Many music, sports stars and celebrities have got on board to show their support. The aim is to cut the young suicide rate across the globe as suicide is the main cause of death in young people under 35, with over 1,600 taking their own lives every year. The Lions Barbers Collective wants to encourage men to talk about things they are not coping with, only then will it shatter the stigma. Reaching for the Stars

I

t’s been yet another fantastic month for me to say the least. Since moving over to London to pursue a career in acting in July, I’ve been having an amazing and busy time so far. As mentioned previously, I signed with BMA Models, one of the UK and Europe’s top modelling agencies, and although as much as I love Ireland I have been sent for more auditions, castings and photoshoots in 4 weeks in London then I’ve had in Ireland in the past year. My first casting was a photoshoot for Nike UK, where the person that was picked would appear in brochures across Nike Stores in the UK, and thankfully I was chosen, which I still can’t believe.I truly believe London is the New York of Europe and am ver y thankful to be a part of this experience. I also featured as part of a hidden camera Japanese TV show as a

Cristiano Ronaldo impersonator which was ver y random but enjoyable. Basically, a Japanese TV production company who are based in London contacted my agency requesting for a Ronaldo look a like, and seeing as though I have done a bit of work as Ronaldo before, they thought I was the perfect candidate. What it entailed was that they were filming a well known Japanese author who was based in London and the woman decided to play a prank on her 11 year old son. After the age of 10 you are legally allowed to leave your child on his/her own but this particular kid is obsessed with Ronaldo and they wanted me to knock on the kids door while the mother was away despite her telling him to not answer the door but did he answer the door seeing as though his idol “Ronaldo” was on the other side? Only time will tell.

I also had the pleasure of playing the part as a Rugby player for a photoshoot for the Guinness Rugby World Cup. It was a fun day playing this part were we had to learn how to do the traditional routine of “The Haka”. Being Irish for a Guinness shoot really was beneficial

and was good to network with other people involved. Ever ything has been happening so fast but I also found the time to take part in the Korean London Fashion Show which took place in Trafalgar Square. We had to wear traditional Korean Geisha outfits and modelled in front of 1000’s of people.

Finally, I recently came back home to visit family which was amazing to see all of them, but while I was here I was kindly invited to the Miss Ireland Final in the Crowne Plaza,Dublin and would like to congratulate the new Miss Ireland, Sacha Livingstone who was Miss Antrim. I had the chance to speak to Sacha and give her advice on what to expect for Miss World 2016 in China and she well deser ved to win as we wish her all the best in her future projects.

O

ctober is a special month, and I’m not talking about perusing the Christmas decorations in the local shop either. Celebrations will take place as Back To The Future celebrates its 30th anniversary. Some of you will recall seeing it in a cinema, others will have seen it on the movie channels or on DVD (or maybe you bought those limited edition Blu-Rays). No matter where you saw it, and I’m betting you have, it’s a magical and brilliant movie experience. Having the engineering skills of a dead chimp never allowed me to build Doc Brown’s dog feeding gadgetry in the opening sequence, but much to the “delight” of my mother and a new carpet I tried anyway. With my engineering aspirations in tatters, I fell in love with the time travelling DeLorean. Why didn’t our family car have those doors, and could we buy them and put them on? The idea of flux capacitors never entered my head, all I wanted to know was would our car go back in time if it went over 88 mph. Ok, there was no trip computer in the car we had and no where to punch in what year you wanted to go, but for all I knew it could have been in the cassette player (Google it). That said, the car we had at the time would have also left flaming tire marks at 88mph, but not for the time travelling reason you’d think. Back To The Future, and this might sound sad to some of you, was a very influential movie on yours truly. I convinced myself I looked like Marty McFly as I had a similar hairdo at the time. I grew an affection that I still have today, to gilets or as my mother would call them, sleeveless jackets. Granted, my wife would send me back in time if I wore one now. A few years ago, I got the opportunity to interview Tom Wilson, the actor who played Biff, and having Tom dress me down as Biff was possibly one of the greatest little personal moments I’ve had behind a microphone. Back To The Future is an incredibly special film to me. It was a truly magical experience for a young kid, and even now, as a Husband and a Dad, it remains as magical as the first day I laid eyes on Marty McFly going back to 1955. Only in the last few weeks did I show the first movie to my son Cameron, and while my explanations of the space time continuum (complete with diagrams) and flux capacitors made zero impact, he was still amazed by the movie, just like his Dad. While I knew in my own, young, heart and soul that time travel wasn’t possible, secretly I wished it was and lurking in the back of my mind, there was always a glimmer of hope that it might be possible. And you know what, there’s still a big part of me that secretly believes, with the right tools, a dodgy ebay bought flux-capacitor and a shopping center car park, that it is all possible! NOW YOU KNOW! Reportedly, Spectre went massively over budget and is on track to being the most expensive James Bond movie ever made, costing over US $300 million. It has been estimated to end up at around $350 million

must also be shown that the filmmakers are taking the subject matter seriously and are representing the truth. 50 pages of the script for The Martian starring Matt Damon, is NASA material.

Filmmakers wanting to portray NASA in a movie must obtain permission to do so. NASA

The script for Back To The Future was rejected 40 times before it was finally green-lit.

Must See Movies This Month

Spectre

It’s the 24th Bond movie and it could well be the last outing for Daniel Craig as 007. While the last two Bond movies weren’t exactly mind blowing, it still remains to be seen if audiences will be left shaken or stirred with Spectre. That said, any Bond movie is always a spectacle and mark this into your calendar.

The Martian

Matt Damon is trapped on Mars and must find a way to survive. Considering this is directed by one of the fathers of modern sci-fi, Sir Ridley Scott, The Martian is shaping up to be an absolute must see movie.

Macbeth

Many of us “remember” Macbeth from our school days. The early buzz on Macbeth is huge, with the movie received a 10-minute standing ovation at the end of its screening at the 68th Cannes Film Festival. Whether or not Michael Fassbender is swinging his golf club is another matter altogether. That said, we’ll settle for an axe.

1

Tomato

Believe it or not Tomato is one home remedy to remove dark circles under eyes that works particularly well. It works by naturally lightening the colour of the skin. To use this quick fix just mix 1 teaspoon of tomato juice with a teaspoon of lemon juice and apply it under your eyes. Let it remain for 10 minutes, wash it off with water. Repeat this remedy twice a day.

5

Rose Water

Soaking cotton pads in rose water to place on your eyes can also lessen dark circles. You can also form a paste of rose petals and milk and use it on dark circles. Rose water is one of the best home remedies as it works fast and also contains a natural soothing agent.

Cold Tea Bags

Who didn’t hear this from their mammies? Soak tea bags in water, put it in a fridge, then out it them over your eyes. Regular use works best.

Cucumber

Probably the most well-known home helps for removing the dark circles is cucumber. Cut a slice for each eye, store the slices in the refrigerator to cool them and then rest the slices on your eyes for 10 to 15 minutes.

Potato

A totally Irish method to help elevate dark circles is juice from a grated potato. Soak a cotton ball in the juice and leave it on your eyelids for about 15 minutes, then wash it off. Potato is a natural bleaching agent hence how it can help you on your dark-circle-days.

7

Turmeric Paste

Paste made from pineapple juice and turmeric powder is a quick help to anyone looking to get rid of dark circles.

JOB FAIRY

The Job Fairy with Ann-marie McCormack We live in a time where we all have to work to survive, and we all have ideas that could be life changing for ourselves. But do we go that extra mile and start our own business?…

I

f we have an idea where and how do we start? Irish pioneers in enterprise have slipped from second place in early entrepreneurial activity to eight according to the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor, so how do we get back up there as a nation? How do we promote ourselves and show the world what we can do? 20,000 people in Ireland started a new business in 2014, down 12,000 from 2013.

product available? Has anyone else had the same idea, is it out there on the web. Social media will dictate what people desire and don’t want, so get googling.... find out if your product is wanted? • What’s your break even ? (what your outlay is until you start making profit) • Find out what suppliers are costing and if credit is available? • Take advantage of every contact you have. • Be prepared for the worst... What could happen, insurance/low footfall/stock control etc.

So, do you have an idea, something original, unique, that isn’t already available, that people want? We’ll if you do then here are my top tips to help you get started • Do your research, is your product already available nationwide? If not, your on to a good start...Where is your 64 WOhmagazine.ie

Ok, so your concept is valid, you want to go for it, and you should. • You next have to set up a bank account, visit your local branch and meet with your local Small to Medium Enterprise Specialist (SME), AIB has a two year start up package, transaction free banking and great customer support to guide you on your way. • Next step is go make an appointment to visit your local reputable accountant. You can discuss with your accountant the type of business you want, either a sole trader/partnership, Limited liability partnership or a Limited Company. • Cash flow analysis , have a set forecast and stick to it for your start up. Websites will cost more to get off the ground than you realise, so allow for the extra costs over your budget. • Last thing is marketing, social media, get your product out there and show the nation what your made of. So if you have the idea, why not try it, there will be hurdles along the way but don’t leave them stop achieving your goal.

AGONY AUNT HEALTH

Dr.F l yNick nn

Cystitis

D

o you suffer from pain when you pass urine? Maybe you pass urine frequently, or have pain in your lower tummy? Is there blood in your urine? Your urine might even be cloudy or smelly? If you recognise one or all of these symptoms then chances are you suffer from cystitis. No need to be ashamed, one in ever y seven women will suffer from cystitis this year. Cystitis means inflammation of the bladder and it is usually caused by a urine infection. Most urine infections are due to germs that come from your own bowel. Some bacteria lie around your back passage after you pass a stool. These bacteria can sometimes travel to your urethra (the tube from the bladder that passes out urine) and into your bladder. Bacteria in your bladder can multiply quickly to cause infection. Women are eight times more likely to have cystitis than men, as the tube that passes out urine from a woman’s bladder (the urethra) is shorter and opens nearer the back passage. Up to 15% of women have cystitis each year and about half of women have at least one bout of cystitis in their life. Cystitis is also more common if you have diabetes mellitus, are pregnant or are sexually active. Vaginal thrush can cause symptoms that may be mistaken for cystitis. Also some soaps, deodorants and bubble baths may irritate your genital area and cause mild pain when you pass urine. If you’ve had cystitis before and you’re sure that you have mild cystitis you may not need to see your GP at all as there are treatments that you can tr y yourself.

Taking over-the-counter painkillers, such as paracetamol or ibuprofen, can reduce pain and discomfort. Drinking plenty of water is recommended as a treatment for cystitis. Avoid alcohol and don’t have sex until your cystitis has cleared up because having sex can make it worse. Some people find that using urine alkanising agents, such as potassium citrate (Cystopurin), for a short period of time may help relieve pain when urinating. If you are unsure about the diagnosis, if your symptoms are severe, or if your symptoms are ongoing for over a week you should see your GP or practice nurse. They will normally do a simple dipstick test on a urine sample to check for cystitis. This can detect bacteria in your urine. It is fairly reliable and usually no further test is needed. In certain circumstances a urine sample is sent to the laborator y to find out which germ is causing the infection. A short course of an antibiotic is a common treatment for most women. Symptoms usually improve within a day or so after starting treatment. Some women are prone to recurrent cystitis. To reduce how often you get cystitis drink lots each day to flush out your bladder, wipe from front to back after you go to the toilet, wear loose fitting cotton under wear and change daily, after having sex go to the toilet to empty your bladder and if your vagina is dr y use a lubricating jelly during sex. Cystitis is common and I see cases in practice on a daily basis. If you are worried about cystitis make an appointment with your GP or practice nurse.

Why you don’t want discount Botox? With Botox and aesthetic treatments becoming more and more popular, it is inevitable that ‘special deals’ or ‘discount offers’ will pop up here and there. While these might seem like a tempting offer, they should be avoided. While Botox has been used for over 30 years for cosmetic purposes, Botox injections are still a medical procedure, and as such words like ‘discount’ and ‘half price’ have no business being associated with it. This is your face we are talking about after all. Cheap is not a word you want associated with any aesthetic procedure. We see a lot of patients who have previously availed of these so called ‘special offers’ and invariably the feedback we get from them is that they are not happy with the results. They are dissatisfied with the effect of the Botox and how long it lasts. At our clinic we don’t have the lowest prices for Botox in Ireland, nor do we want to. But because of the large number of patients we treat, we can afford to be very competitively priced for our professional service of Botox. We adhere to strict medical protocol and manufacturer guidelines when it comes to dosage and to patient follow up. All our patients fill out a detailed medical history and have a consultation with the treating doctor prior to treatment. Botox takes four to five days to start to work, the maximum effects are seen after two weeks, and Botox lasts three months. We see all our patients back after two weeks for review and if at that stage they required any additional Botox in a particular area, then it is provided at no additional cost. We are a patient and results centred clinic. Patient satisfaction is at the core of our philosophy in the clinic. We look after each and everyone of our patients as if they were our only patient. We want to give you the best and most natural looking results possible, and we want you to return. We provide aesthetic treatments six days a week. This is unmatched by any other clinic that we are aware of and we aim to accommodate you, the patient at a time, and on a day that suits your busy schedule. At our clinic there is no waiting around for a month, or six weeks until the aesthetic doctor returns to the region. Discounts and special offers have their place, but not when it comes to aesthetic treatments. Think carefully before you chose where to get your Botox done. Do some research online, check out the clinic’s website and read reviews. You can find more information about Visage Clinic and Botox treatments on our website: www.visage.ie or find us on facebook at Visage Clinic. Call us on 021- 2348183 to book your free consultation.

Healthy Lunch Box Ideas

A

s the back to school flurry is just around the corner, preparation is key for maintaining a healthy home and schoollife balance for kids. It’s also quite nice to spice up the sometimes drab lunchbox familiars which can all too often remain untouched. I’ve put together some of my best lunch-box tips to ensure school-goers have healthy, nutritious snacks to hand throughout the day. And for the parents, I’ve selected some of my most easy to cook dishes which take no time at all to prepare, but still remain flavourful and delicious. Sandwiches are a popular choice for a school or college or college lunch. Remember that meats, dairy products, and eggs are perishable, so be sure to use a freezer pack to keep them cold. Choose whole grain bread, wraps, or pitas. If your child resists whole grain breads, use bread that is made with some whole grain but still has the flavour and texture of white bread. Each sandwich should have a healthy protein source and healthy toppings. Some suggestions: • Tuna sandwich wrap with light mayonnaise, lettuce and tomatoes. • Egg salad sandwich on whole grain bread. • Peanut butter, cashew, or almond butter with a 100 percent fruit spread on whole grain bread. • Sliced turkey, lean roast beef, or chicken from the deli--or left over from last night’s dinner--with light mayonnaise, mustard, and a slice of cheese What should you send along with the sandwich? A piece of fresh fruit is healthy but can get a bit boring after a while. Skip the greasy chips and choose from these healthier ideas, just remember to keep perishables cold: • Send a salad in a small plastic container. Keep the dressing on the side in a separate smaller container. • Cheese sticks go well with sandwiches and are a good source of calcium. • Whole grain snack crackers add a nice crunch and lots of healthy fibre. • Make a fruit salad with grapes, melons chunks, and blueberries. • Dried fruit, like raisins, dried cranberries or banana chips. • Nuts like almonds, cashews, or walnuts • Pack a cold pasta salad, coleslaw, or potato salad. • Baby carrots with a small container of vegetable dip. • Crunchy raw green beans with a small container of ranch or French onion dip. • Pre-packaged, flavoured low-fat yogurt.

Think Beyond the Sandwich

With insulated food jars, you can send hot foods to school or college, too, like leftovers from that delicious meal you made last night. Make sure the foods are heated up to at least 140 degrees before 68 WOhmagazine.ie

you load them into the insulated jars. Here are some hot food ideas: • Beef and vegetable stew with a hard roll. • Chicken noodle soup and whole grain crackers • Lasagne with a salad and bread. • Chicken casserole with carrots and vegetable dip. • Chilli with whole grain crackers or bread. • Left over stir-fry or sautéed vegetables. With the right lunch gear, your child can enjoy a delicious and healthy lunch every day. Add a small cookie or tiny piece of candy for dessert along with juice, milk, or water for a complete healthy and fun meal.

Protein

Make sandwiches using protein fillings such as chicken, egg, ham, tuna or cheese or make salads such as Chicken Caesar salad or Tuna pasta salad.

Carbohydrates

Complex carbohydrates release calories slowly and help to keep up energy levels and concentration. In contrast, refined carbohydrates (such as those in white bread, biscuits or cakes) only provide instant, short-lived energy. Choose complex carbohydrates such as wholemeal bread, pasta, banana or rice. Pasta or rice salads make a nice change from sandwiches.

Calcium

Children or students under the age of five shouldn’t have a low-fat diet, so choose wholemilk products such as Greek-style yoghurt rather than low-fat yoghurt. In a recent survey by the Dairy Council, it was found that 2.5 million young people and women were eating too little calcium to build strong bones. Lack of calcium can lead to osteoporosis later in life, so make sure that you regularly include dairy products in your child’s lunchbox. Cheese, yoghurt, forage frais, yoghurt drinks, smoothies and milkshakes are all excellent sources of calcium.

Fruit and vegetables

Health experts recommend that we include five portions of fruit and vegetables in our diet every day. Whole fruit may not be that appealing to youngsters, so try cutting fruit into chunks and threading it onto skewers or thin straws. Include dried fruit too - dried apricots in particular are rich in vitamins and minerals.

Ten best lunchbox tips

Here are ten tried and tested ways to make your child’s lunch healthier, more nutritious and more fun: • Make eating fruit fun. Most children or students will leave food that takes a lot of effort to eat, as they want a quick refuelling stop leaving maximum time for the playground. Peel Clementine’s and cover with plastic wrap, cut kiwi fruit in half or make colourful skewers with bite sized-pieces of fruit. • Cut down on salt. Children or students

tend to consume too much salt in their diet. Many manufactured foods made especially for lunchboxes, such as cheese strings, processed ham and cheese lunch packs and crisps, are very high in salt. Eating foods that contain potassium (such as bananas and dried apricots) helps balance the effect of salt in the body. • Ensure salads remain crisp. When making salads it’s a good idea to keep the salad dressing separate and let your child pour it over the salad himself to prevent it from going soggy. • Build on your child’s tastes. Communicate with your child and ask him what he enjoyed in his lunchbox. Look at what comes back untouched and ask (without being defensive) why it wasn’t eaten. Ask if there are any foods that other children or students bring to school or college that he would like to try. • Save time. Lunches can be prepared the night before to save time in the morning. Prepare pasta salads, sandwich fillings, fruit compotes or include something from last night’s dinner, such as soup in a flask, chicken skewers or a Spanish omelette. • Keep food warm. It’s a good idea to include something hot in a lunchbox, particularly when the weather is cold. A wide-mouthed miniThermos flask would be ideal for serving up a delicious cup of homemade or good-quality bought soup that’s both warming and nutritious. • Keep food cool. If you want to keep the contents of your child’s lunchbox cool, try freezing a carton or plastic bottle of juice overnight. The frozen drink will help keep food cool and will have defrosted by lunchtime. Choose pure fruit juice or fruit smoothies, not fruit juice ‘drinks’ which tend to be high in added sugar. • Freshen up. Cut-up vegetables sticks can dry out, so it’s a good idea to wrap them in some damp kitchen paper to retain moisture. • Cut down on junk. Avoid too many processed foods as they tend to contain few nutrients and too much salt, sugar, additives and saturated fat. If your child likes crisps but you don’t want him to fill up by eating a whole bag, put some in a small bag or wrap some crisps in foil. • Add a personal touch. Tuck a surprise like a note, stickers or joke in your child’s lunchbox or hide a special treat at the bottom. Pack fun napkins, decorate lunch bags with stickers, draw a face on a banana with a marker pen or cut sandwiches into novelty shapes using cookie cutters. At the weekend it’s a good idea to get your children or students involved in the kitchen making things like cookies and muffins which they can then take to school or college the following week. *All recipes are taken from Andrew’s book ‘Entertaining with Andrew Rudd’ available from all good bookshops online through www.medley.ie

TOP TEN FOOD & RECIPES

Mushroom Soup I am a soup fanatic and mushroom is one of my favourites. I was in Sicily with my friends last summer and had the most amazingly simple mushroom soup with shavings of fresh black truffle. It was probably the most expensive soup I’ve ever had but it was incredible. This recipe is for a less extravagant version but it’s really, really delicious. prep: 20 minutes | cook: 20 minutes | serves: 4–6 Ingredients • 100g butter • 2 medium onions, finely diced • salt and freshly cracked black pepper • 2 garlic cloves, peeled and finely diced • sprig of fresh thyme • 600g button mushrooms,

roughly chopped • 1 litre chicken or vegetable stock • 125ml cream to serve • 10 small chanterelle mushrooms • 1 tbsp butter • salt and freshly cracked black pepper

Instructions Place a heavy-bottomed pan over a medium heat and add the butter. Once the butter is foaming, add the onion and season well with salt and pepper. Add the garlic, thyme and mushrooms and mix well. Cover with a piece of parchment paper and leave to gently sweat over a low heat until the onions are translucent but not brown. This will take about 15 minutes. In the meantime, heat the stock in another saucepan. Once it is warmed through, add the onion and mushroom mixture to the stock and blend with a hand blender until you have a smooth soup. Finally add 100ml cream to give a silky finish. While the soup is cooking, sauté the chanterelle mushrooms in the butter until crisp. This should take no more than 3 minutes over a high heat. Season with salt and pepper. Remove from the heat and transfer to kitchen paper to soak up any excess butter. Allow to cool. Serve the soup in warmed bowls, with a drizzle of the remaining cream and a sprinkling of the chanterelle mushrooms.

Lamb Meatballs in a Rich Tomato Sauce The texture of these meatballs is beautifully soft thanks to the lean minced lamb, which works really well with the homemade tomato sauce. This recipe is also a great way to make two meals at once. Simply double the quantities of the meatball mixture and on the first night serve the meatballs with the tomato sauce; on the second night make small burgers or patties with the meatballs. You could also serve them with spaghetti. I sometimes like to add half a glass of red wine to the tomato sauce. Just make sure to cook for a further 5 minutes; otherwise the sauce will taste too acidic. prep: 25 minutes | cook: 20 minutes | serves: 5 (2 meatballs per person) Ingredients for the meatballs • 1 medium red onion, finely chopped • 2 garlic cloves, chopped • 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil • 1kg minced lamb • bunch of fresh green herbs (parsley, thyme or rosemary) • 1 tbsp oyster sauce • 1 tsp ground mace • salt and freshly ground black pepper • 1 tbsp sunflower oil

• 1 medium onion, finely chopped • 3 garlic cloves, finely chopped • ½ tsp salt and ½ tsp freshly ground pepper • 1 bird’s-eye chilli pepper, finely chopped • 2 x 400g tins chopped tomatoes • ½ tsp smoked paprika • ½ tsp hot chilli powder • 1 tsp sugar • 200g grated Parmesan

for the tomato sauce • 4 tbsp olive oil

to serve • handful chopped fresh curly leaf parsley

Instructions Preheat the oven to 200°C fan/220°C/gas mark 7. To prepare the meatballs, gently sauté the onion and garlic in the olive oil over a medium heat until the onions turn translucent. Allow to cool. Add the remaining ingredients for the meatballs to a bowl. Add the sautéed onion and garlic and mix to combine. Divide into 10 portions, then, using clean hands, gently mould each meatball into a smallish golf-ball-sized shape. In a frying pan heat 1 tablespoon of sunflower oil and brown meatballs on all sides for 5 minutes. To prepare the sauce, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a medium saucepan. Add the onion, garlic and chilli pepper. Lightly sauté for 5 minutes over a low heat. Season with salt and pepper. Add the tomatoes, paprika, chilli powder and sugar. Bring to the boil and then reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Taste and season with more salt and pepper or sugar, if needed. Blend until smooth. Transfer the meatballs to an ovenproof dish, pour over the tomato sauce and finish with the grated Parmesan. Bake for 20 minutes until golden and bubbling on top. Serve immediately with a generous sprinkle of fresh parsley. wOhmagazine.ie 69

TOP TEN FOOD & RECIPES

Jewish Chicken This is a lovely savoury recipe, guaranteed to get the taste buds going. My friend Sinéad Walsh Ryan introduced me to this dish and its combination of simple flavours. It is adapted from The Book of Jewish Foodby Claudia Roden, food writer and cultural anthropologist. The tastes are exquisite and it’s quick and easy to prepare. prep: 5 minutes | marinate: 30 minutes | cook: 1¾ hours | serves: 6 Ingredients • 100g raisins • 1.2 litres chicken stock • 1 free-range chicken (about 1.5kg) • 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil • salt and freshly cracked black pepper

• • • •

2 whole lemons 250g fresh tagliatelle 2 tbsp finely chopped fresh rosemary 100g pine nuts, lightly toasted on a dry pan

Instructions Preheat the oven to 165°C fan/185°C/gas mark 4. Soak the raisins in the chicken stock for 30 minutes. Remove the raisins with a slotted spoon and set aside but hold on to the stock. You’ll use it later to baste the roasting chicken. Coat the whole chicken with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Cut the lemons in half and place into the cavity of the chicken. Transfer the chicken to the oven to roast for 1½ hours. Baste the chicken by pouring over 1 cup (about 225ml) of chicken stock over the bird every 30 minutes to ensure that the meat is lovely and moist. Once the chicken is cooked, remove it from the oven and let it rest for 15 minutes, covered with tin foil. Remove the meat and skin from the chicken and chop it into bite-size pieces. Cook the pasta as per the packet instructions. Drain and place on a large serving platter. Add the chicken, drained raisins, chopped rosemary, toasted pine nuts and the juice from the cooked chicken. Serve immediately.

Cinnamon Apple and Rhubarb Crumble This dish takes me back to my schooldays at Wilson’s Hospital School in Multyfarnham, County Westmeath. A group of friends and I were asked to dinner with our headmaster, Robert Whiteside. He made a rhubarb crumble for dessert and it was delicious. It has been one of my favourite desserts ever since and I wanted to create my own version and dedicate it to him. prep: 5 minutes | cook: 40–45 minutes | serves: 6–8 Ingredients for the fruit base • 5 large cooking apples, peeled, cored and sliced • 5 stalks of rhubarb, washed, peeled and cut into 2cm pieces • 100g butter • 4 tbsp brown sugar • juice of ½ orange • 50ml liqueur of your choice • zest of 1 orange for the crumble topping • 150g cold butter, cut into cubes • 100g plain flour

• • • • • •

100g wholemeal flour 1 tsp salt 150g porridge oats 150g brown sugar 30g walnuts, shelled and chopped (optional) 1 tbsp ground cinnamon

to serve • softly whipped cream or ice cream (optional) you will also need • 25cm x 16cm deep ovenproof dish

Instructions Preheat the oven to 160ºC fan/180°C/gas mark 4. In a large frying pan, lightly fry the apple and rhubarb pieces in the butter. Sprinkle over the brown sugar and, once the fruit is lightly caramelised, add the orange juice, liqueur and zest and stir well. Then transfer the fruit to an ovenproof baking dish and allow to cool slightly while you make the crumble topping. To make the crumble, place the chilled, cubed butter in a large bowl and sieve in the plain flour. Add the wholemeal flour and the salt. Rub the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs. Then add in the oats, sugar, walnuts and cinnamon and mix well. Sprinkle the crumble topping over the fruit and bake in the preheated oven for 40–45 minutes. Serve with softly whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.

AGONY AUNT

Dear Peig

Peig Ryan is a woman of substance and a certain age, she has seen life from all angles, however chooses to stay firmly in her own right angle. She shoots straight from her recent hip replacement, and isn’t afraid to say it like it is!

Dear Peig,

I’m am an elderly lady and I know it. My husband is an even more elderly man with a new found sense of youth. He is dying for a bit of “nighttime snuggles”, if you know what I mean, but I am terrified I am going to break a hip! I was talking to my friend Betty and the ole devil suggested a trick as old as time. “Give him a sly brandy before bed time” she said, and make him think we were “involved” when in fact he is not “in” anything! We used to do it all the time back in the day when we didn’t want another baby. My problem is, both Betty and I are so far gone, we’ve forgotten how to fake it! Peig, I need your help! Brittle Bone

Dear Peig,

I have a son. He’s always been perfect. Ever since he was a little boy it’s been me and him. His father was a sailor, in port only for a week or so, and left me head over heels in love, pregnant and alone. My darling boy has been my best friend for the past twenty five years. He went to the salon with me, shopping, we went to the cinema, and even when he came home from college for the weekends we would get out a bottle of wine and rent a chick flick. Now he has the audacity to bring back his new girlfriend. A girlfriend! Really? All his life he has led me to believe he was gay. My sweet sensitive boy is no more, it was all a lie. he is just a lustful man like all the rest. What am I to do?

Pussy Problems

Dear Pussy Problems,

You’d want to get an oul grip. Just because you never recovered from losing the love of your life doesn’t mean you can control your son’s life and force him to come do tedious errands with you. It’s time for him to get out and live his life, hopefully without being too emotionally damaged or scarred from suffering the ordeal of your company. A twenty five year old man should not be visiting the salon with his Mammy, he should be off cavorting in the Voodoo rooms and leaving you at home to watch Daithi and Maurya. Get yourself a Plenty of Fish account, get yourself out there and find yourself a lover. It’s time for you, and him to MOVE on! Peig

Peig

Dear Brittle Bone,

Peig

I am a nineteen year old guy and madly in love with my older, sexy girlfriend. Due to the fact I still live at home we have to go to hers every time we want to “do the deed”. The problem is that she refuses to put her feline companion outside of “their” room when we’re intimate. I see it staring and I know one of these days it is going to pounce… I dread to think on what. Help!

Has it occurred to you that your older sexy girlfriend might have some class of a psychological disorder? Why does the cat need to be present? Right, the mental state of your girlfriend aside, have you tried switching it up? How about you insist on a specific position whereby herself is in the line of fire of this feline predator. Perhaps if she realised the risks and precariousness of the situation she may reassess her decision. My other suggestion would be to head into MaxiZoo and purchase yourself a nice long cat toy on some class of a stick. This will serve two purposes. 1, when you’re ‘doing the deed’ you have a way of distracting the cat from your precious nether regions AND 2, it’ll serve the purpose of distracting you sufficiently so that you’ll have extra time to offer some added attention and time to your older more attractive half. She’ll thank you for it, trust me. Nyeah.

Mammy Blues

To be perfectly honest, I’m struggling to comprehend what you’re asking. Are you suggesting that you get your hubbie absolutely wasted on the Vermouth and tell him the following morning that you’re mangled after a hot n’ steamy night of passion under the sheets? Sure, that’s one way to handle it I suppose. Otherwise, I would suggest leaving him off to get all frisky. Sher lookit, at this stage of his life, if he can maintain, sustain and complete the deed more than once every couple of weeks, I tip my hat to him. Don’t worry about that oul hip, limber up, do an oul lunge or two, grab the KY Jelly and get crackin,’ and who knows, you might even enjoy yourself! Nyeah.

ARIES

21 March - 20 April All eyes turn to see what you’re going to do next during the first weeks of October. This month you’ll need to stand up and display your self-confidence in a way that wasn’t called on before. Make adjustments if you are not representing yourself accurately or in a way that is most true for your character. Relationship matters occupy your mind around New Moon on the13th. What’s important is how these areas of your life are impacting on and your lifestyle and self expression. The trick is to handle any tense moments with grace, state your position and move on quickly.

GEMINI

21 May - 21 June

Dear Peig,

I am an elderly man, I live alone, but I have big socks and they are filled with money. Over your time writing for this magazine I have found myself falling for you. My question is this; how would an ole fella like myself go about courting a gem like you? Lovestruck

Dear Lovestruck,

My Aongus and I are happily married for the bones of 54 years at this point, and whilst we’ve had our ups and our downs, I have zero interest in any other man. Yes, Aongus has an unfortunate recurring fungal infection, and he slurps his stew loudly and makes a funny high pitched squeak when he climaxes but I still love the oul smelly bones of him. So whilst once upon a time a man with a nice crisp cardigan and a mean foxtrotter would have me weak at me dodgy hip, alas I am not one for turning. In the immortal words of MC Hammer: ‘Can’t touch this, do do do do, do do, do doo.’ Nyeah. Peig

This month it’s who you know rather than what you know that matters. The spotlight is on your position within your community, in group ventures, or work projects which involve others of like mind. Make the opportunity to meet new people; the benefits will soon follow. It’s also time to change up a gear in your social life. The focus shifts after New Moon on the 13th as you get out the party gear or just take some needed leisure time. Having fun is the theme and allowing the inner child some freedom to run loose now brings it’s rewards.

LEO

24 July - 23 August

Travel, study or spiritual matters have been taking your attention. Not content with anything “hum drum”, you’re likely to want the freedom to explore new ground or invite new experiences into your life. This is a great time to think big and make the most of opportunities that come your way. An overseas contact may get in touch or new information provides the chance to break out from any restricting routines to try something different. Be prepared to open your mind to new ideas and lifestyles. Life could get hectic around mid month so pace yourself whilst you still have some time available.

LIBRA

23 September - 22 October

With last months Full Moon opposite your Sun sign the spotlight has been on dealing with any relationship issues. Personal and professional partnerships will need your attention for the next few weeks. Finding a win win situation for everyone has to be your goal. Interesting and stimulating people may come into your life now and you’ll want to find more time for intimate encounters or shared experiences. Your personal style and self expression gets to be the issue later in October and you won’t want to be dictated to by other peoples demands. Being seen and accepted on your own merit becomes priority.

SAGITTARIUS

23 November - 21 December

Your imaginative powers are strong and you enjoy a chance to express your creative talents during the next few weeks. Whatever you do it needs to give scope to your originality and get you noticed. Your feelings for loved ones are more intense now and children may take an important role in your life at this time. You want to have fun and taking chances might pay off. Don’t take yourself too seriously and you may surprise yourself at what you come up with by just playing around. Expect rewards from past efforts as we approach the month end.

AQUARIUS

21 January - 19 February

Follow the urge to get out and about and make connections over the next two weeks. Expect opportunities to get more involved with your neighbours or local events. This is also a good time to catch up on correspondences or to do some writing. You may feel restless if you don’t find activities that stimulate your mind. Travel, foreign visitors or starting a new study course will likely be a feature mid month and you’ll want to seek out more information or alternatives to what you already know. A boost to your work life or career is likely after 23rd.

Facebook: Astrologer Kate Arbon

TAURUS

21 April - 20 May

During early October your inclination is to shun the limelight and keep pretty much to yourself. You can be very productive in the next few weeks by just quietly working away behindthe-scenes in seclusion. Reconnecting with your inner world is important for your sense of equilibrium. Valuable insights and breakthroughs are possible. Enjoy the quiet “alone time” whilst you can as the demands of your outer world will encroach again soon enough. Simple practical concerns about health, money or everyday responsibilities must be given your attention but don’t allow yourself to become over anxious later in the month.

CANCER

22 June - 23 July

Now is the time to make plans for your future. Personal status or vocational concerns are likely to dominate your thinking from late September into mid October. If you want to fulfill your ambitions or go a step further then make some positive moves. Getting yourself some recognition for what you do well takes on extra significance. Remember to balance the demands of work or public life with the needs of your home life especially from mid month onwards. Family or domestic arrangements need your attention but you get the support you need to create a secure foundation to work from.

VIRGO

24 August - 22 September

The next two weeks might be a trying period; you may feel anxious and worried about money, health or concerned for other people. It will pass. You are simply focused on the negative side of a cycle at the expense of the positive. It’s a great time to clear out what doesn’t work well in your life in preparation for the next phase. After the New Moon on 13th you begin to acknowledge what you have in terms of real assets and how you can make the best of them. Finances, accounts and money matters improve when they get your full attention.

SCORPIO

23 October - 22 November

This is a good month to organize your work or focus on the tedious but necessary tasks that don’t reap obvious rewards. You’ll benefit from making adjustments especially if you’ve been overdoing it lately. Treat yourself with care and pay attention to your physical needs especially up until New Moon on the 13th. Take a few days mid month for some solitary or down time to reflect and restore your spirit and physical vitality. After the 23rd when the Sun moves into your own sign you will get the boost you need as life throws you some new or exciting challenges.

CAPRICORN

22 December - 20 January

During early October you may feel like staying home. Build up your reserves so you have plenty spare for later. Use this time to complete unfinished tasks and don’t expect to get started on anything new until mid month. Your work or social status takes on greater significance after the 13th and you’ll want to put your best effort into making the most of your situation. Putting your energy into any project that gives you some sense of achievement will feel important now. The real rewards will become more apparent after the 23rd when you can expect some well deserved recognition.

PISCES

20 February - 20 March

Early October finds you concerned with your material and financial security. Take time to consider if you are making the best of your natural skills and talents - you might be underestimating yourself! Actual money isn’t the only source of wealth and you’ll probably find you have abundance in another form. Concerns or anxieties about being dependent on others may trouble you mid month. It’s a short lived phase if you don’t dwell on the negative and your world will open up with new opportunities after Full Moon on 27th. Make plans, think big and remember to include your dreams. wOhmagazine.ie 73

BOOK OF THE MONTH

Early One Morning By Virginia Baily

W

A grey dawn in 1943: on a street in Rome, two young women, complete strangers to each other, lock eyes for a single moment. One of the women, Chiara Ravello, is about to flee the occupied city for the safety of her grandparents’ house in the hills. The other has been herded on to a truck with her husband and their young children, and will shortly be driven off into the darkness. In that endless-seeming moment, before she has time to think about what she is doing, Chiara makes a decision that changes her life for ever. Loudly claiming the woman’s son as her own nephew, she demands his immediate return; only as the trucks depart does she begin to realize what she has done. She is twenty-seven, single, with a sister who needs her constant care, a hazardous journey ahead of her, and now a child in her charge - a child with no papers who refuses to speak and gives every indication that he will bolt at the first opportunity. Three decades later, Chiara lives alone in Rome, a self-contained, self-possessed woman working as a translator and to all appearances quite content with a life which revolves around work,

friends, music and the theatre. But always in the background is the shadow of Daniele, the boy from the truck, whose absence haunts her every moment. Gradually we learn of the havoc wrought on Chiara, her family and her friends by the boy she rescued, and how he eventually broke her heart. And when she receives a phone call from a teenage girl named Maria, claiming to be Daniele’s daughter, Chiara knows that it is time for her to face up to the past. This epic novel is an unforgettably powerful, suspenseful, heartbreaking and inspiring tale of love, loss and war’s reverberations down the years. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Virginia Baily holds a PhD and MA in English from the University of Exeter. She founded and co-edits Riptide, a short-story journal. Interview with the author

Virginia Baily

Where did you get the inspiration for this story? I got the inspiration from a 1944 book I read about the rounding up of the Jews of Rome: 16 October 1943 by Giacomo Debenedetti. The book had a huge impact on me not least because I used to go and stay with my aunt in Rome and her apartment was in the former ghetto – so I knew the streets where it had happened. Debenedetti tells the story of a woman who attempts to save one of the Jewish children by claiming the child as her own but the child cries for her real mother and is handed back on to the trucks. I always wondered how if might have been if the child had not cried. Your novel is based abroad in a different time. Did you find it hard to write in a setting so unfamiliar? The setting itself – Rome – is familiar to me. I’ve been visiting regularly since I was sixteen, had a year in Italy as part of my degree and lived there for a few months while I was researching Early One Morning. My familiarity with the different time period came via the books and films that I first came across when I was a student - they gave me a kind of feel for the era. I was also helped along by the timeless quality of Rome itself. It’s part of the city’s magic. Then too, part of the joy of writing is the time travel aspect, leaping across the decades into someone else’s shoes. Early One Morning is a harrowing tale. Was there ever a point of inner conflict, your head was telling you to take the story in one direction and your heart told you to take it another? Yes!! You read my mind. My head told me that the tale was just too difficult and harrowing to tell and I tried very hard for quite a long

time not to tell it. I thought I would write a coming-of-age story about a young British girl going to Rome in the 1970s.’ But I was haunted by the story of the quiet child, the one who did not scream for his real mother. And in the end I had to follow my heart and explore that ‘what if?’ question. Can you write anywhere or do you have a particular routine you need to follow? I aim to write first thing every day whatever other later demands the day might make. I have a laptop on top of a chest of drawers in the corner of my living room. I write standing up staring at the wall. When stuck I pace up and down. I write notes and scraps and observations in my notebook but for crafted, honed prose I seem to need to be standing in that corner. Where is the most surreal place you have ever travelled? The Dogon country in Mali. This was a long time ago. We went by donkey and cart to the village where we were to stay because there were no roads. There was no electricity or running water and when night fell, the darkness was total. We ate food and drank drinks that we could no see. We only discovered at bedtime that we were supposed to have brought blankets and we lay huddled under a thin cloth under the most immense starlit sky while invisible people talked to us and a man I had never seen and who had not seen me proposed! What is your favourite book? Today, I am going to say Haruki Murakami’s ‘Wind-up Bird Chronicle.’

ccording to the urban dictionar y ‘Wine Time’ is a specific time that is set aside in order to consume wine, self explanator y. It is closely related to ‘pre’s’ or ‘pre drinks’ as it is usually a pre-determined time put aside to drink, as in...”I think we need some wine time girls!”… Whether it be after a busy day at the office, a day off shopping, an evening relaxing with friends or simply watching your favourite TV show alone ‘Wine Time’ seems to be a staple for more and more people around the country. Its not just women either, men are also guilty of partaking in ‘Wine Time’… But should we be feeling guilty for indulging in one of favourite past times? a past time that is fast overtaking tea as women’s relaxant of choice, and has seen more men switch to their favourite Merlot, rather than reach for a top shelf whiskey to wind down after a hectic day. Since ancient times us mere mortals have been lovers of the grape, where it was often used in celebrations and for various medicinal ends, Wine is the most common alcoholic beverage mentioned in biblical literature, where it is a source of symbolism, and was an important part of daily life in biblical times, with many interpreters even suggesting that wines were offered to Jesus at his crucifixion for anxiety and as an anesthetic to dull the pain. There have even been suggestions by medical researchers that certain components in red wine can keep our hearts healthy, ward off the signs of Alzheimer’s and some even suggesting that the odd tipple could decrease cancer rates, but seriously as a social nation are we drinking too much? and are we taking the definition of ‘Wine Time’ too far? Is it

time to rethink our drinking? We only have to watch our favourite soaps like Corrie, Eastenders, Fair City and Emmerdale, to see that almost every woman invariably has a glass of wine in their hands. They only never seem to drink tea or coffee at home, only in the local cafe, and they always seem to start at lunchtime. God help their livers, especially Kat Moon’s, but we don’t live in a soap opera, so surely theres no harm in our consumption… The answer is (I’m glad to say) there is no harm in having a little ‘Wine Time’, there are just some simple hints and tips that we should all take on board so that ‘Wine Time’ doesn’t become all the time!!! • Pace yourself, try to stick to that one glass of wine an hour • Make sure you have some food, It really does help soak up the alcohol • Drink a glass of water between glasses of wine • Try not to extend ‘Wine Time’ from home to the night out, choose one or the other • If you have your ‘Wine Time’ in the afternoon set yourself a cut off time before the evening • Know your limit and don’t listen to your friend doing a ‘Mrs Doyle’…Its not tea! So girls (and guys) enjoy your ‘Wine Time’, but remember 3 things… Drink sensibly, Alcohol is NOT a medication, and lastly, If it was good enough for Jesus… For more tips and advice visit www.drinkaware.ie
