WER BURGERBLATTER LIEST WIRD BUND UND TAUB. WEG MIT DEN VERDUMMUNGSBANDAGENI

ICH BIN EtN KOHLKOPF. KENNT IHR MEINE BLATTER?

ICH WEISS VOR SORGEN ZWAR NICHT AUS NOCH EIN, DOCH HALT' ICH STILL UNO HOFF'AUF EINEN REHER, ICH WILL EIN SCHWARZ-ROT-GOLDNER KOHLKOPF SEINI ICH WILL NICHTS SEH'N UND HOREN, DAS STAATSGESCHAFT NICHT STOREN.

UND ZIEHT MAN MICH AUCH BIS AUF'S HEMDE AUS, DIE ROTE PRESSE KOMMT MIR NICHT INS HAUSI

WHOEVER READS BOURGEOIS NEWSPAPERS BECOMES BLIND AND DEAF.

AWAY WITH THE STULTIFYING BANDAGES! I AM A CABBAGEHEAD. DO YOU KNOW MY LEAVES?

FROM WORRIES I AM AT MY WIT'S END, BUT I KEEP QUIET AND HOPE FOR A SAVIOR, I WANT TO BE A BLACK-RED-GOLD CABBAGEHEAD!

I DON'T WANT TO SEE AND HEAR ANYTHING, OR TO INTERFERE WITH PUBLIC AFFAIRS.

AND YOU CAN STRIP ME RIGHT DOWN TO MY SHIRT, BUT I'M NOT HAVING ANY RED PRESS IN MY HOUSE!

The design Involves a playon the word Blalter,which means both newspapers and (cabbage) leaves. The newspapers Tempo and Vorwarts exemplify the Social Democratic press. The figure wears

the uniform of the Reichsbanner Schwarz-Rot-Gold (Black-RedGold), a paramilitary organization of Social Democratic exservicemen. According to Wieland Herzfelde {John Heartfield, p. 367, n. 133),the verse is a parody of the Prussian nationalist song "Ich

bin ein PreuBe, kennt ihrmelne Farben?" (I am a Prussian, do you know my colors?).

All Heartfield's montages were Informed by the strategy and tactics of the German Communist Party and the Communist

International, Moscow. This one registers Communist hostility to the Social Democratic Party, a position that became less intransigent after Hitler took power In 1933. Seealso 3/30,4/30, 5/30,6/30, 8/30,1/31,2/31,4/31,24/34.

Vandervelde oder Die vollkommene

Schamloslgkeit Vandervelde im Natnen der II. Infernotionole:

"Ar^^eiter RuOlands, kehret zuriick zu den geordneten Zusfdnden der Demokrotie!" Vandervelde or The Absolute Lock of Shame Vandervelde in the name of the Second International;

"Russian workers, return to the orderly condition of democracy]" Smile Vandervelde (1866-1936) was a Belgian Social Democratic leader active in tlie Second International, wliicti was founded in 1889 and continued after the First World War as an association of Social

Democratic parties. Its rival was the Third International of Communist Partiesformed in 1919 and based in Moscow (see also 24/34). HereVandervelde is surrounded by press cuttings in English, French, and German about violent conflicts in the capitalist countries that contradicted his assumption of an orderly non-Soviet world. From his mouth, like a speech balloon, comes a press cutting that reads: "Den Vblkern der Sowjetunion mu6 die Freiheit wieder gegeben werden" (Liberty must be given backto the peoples of the Soviet Union).
