Only a sophomore student at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan, the New York based illustrator known as Aimee Books is already being recognized for her creative artwork. At a younger age she used to write a lot, but has now gravitated towards art and looked at the idea of blending the two passions together to illustrate
her own books. In between all of her school work, Books creates comics as freelance projects for Gurl.com, a website dedicated to providing advice to teenage girls.

“It didn’t take me long to realize that art was the only thing [that] I wanted to do with my life.”
Books occasionally creates works digitally, but prefers the look and feel of traditional mediums. “I personally like to have a piece of art that is tangible,” she expressed. “My favourite pieces always end up being the ones where I did everything traditionally.” Books’ favourite mediums to work with include ink, watercolour, and gouache. Oil bars and pastels occasionally grace her artworks, as well, since she finds they allow her to step out of her comfort zone.

Books attributes a lot of her progress as an artist in the past few years to her experience at the School of Visual Arts. “I have had teachers, who were some of the most talented and creative people I have ever met, who have helped me improve my drawing skills and changed the way I think about and create art, she explains.

“Art is a stressful thing and there is a love hate relationship, but I keep going knowing that there is nothing else in the world that will make me feel the same way.

After graduating from the School of Visual Arts, Books hopes to write and illustrate her own books. At her rate of artistic production, we think that dream really isn’t far from happening.
