Cello Electronics unveils world’s first solar TV in the Nigerian Market By Obineme Ndubuisi Micheal
“Cello Electronics has a long running history in solar business and has become the only LED TV brand that still manufactures products in the UK” - David Faint, Cello Electronics (UK) Limited
UK based company, Cello Electronics has launched the world’s first solar TV in the Nigerian market. The product was launched in Lagos at the Solar Future Nigeria 2017, Nigeria’s first solar PV conference, organized by SolarPlaza. Speaking with Oil and Gas Republic journalist, David Faint the company’s sales director said the solar TV has multiple functions and can be used to charge batteries for a variety of uses. This TV can be operated in remote regions of the world where there is no electricity or aerial installation. Cello Electronics was established since 2001, based in the north of England. The company has a long running history in solar business and has become the only LED TV brand that still manufacturers products in the UK. From the production line in Bishop Auckland, County Durham it makes LED TVs from 16? to 85?. As well as TVs it also offers a wide range of accessories, TV cabinets, soundbars and digital tablets. The company is one of Europe’s most innovative LED TV brands. Recently the company has expanded its product range to include digital tablets, laptops and all-in-one PCs.
www.oilandgasrepublic.com
It’s an all-in-one package that includes the LED TV, portable solar panel and TV aerial in one box. It comes with 2 lamps with independent switches with 6m long cables. “We are new to the Nigerian market and we are currently looking for local partners here in Nigeria that will help us distribute these products across the entire nation. The partner has to be a well established company with experience in solar products and electricity products and also have a financial capability to buy the products in stock, David Faint said” Speaking further, he said, Cello solar TV will reduce the cost of buying fuels in Nigeria and making the environment more green. “In UK everybody wants a TV to use it in watching sports such as footballs, movies and in Nigeria the same thing applies” Cello also focuses much of its efforts on providing the best after sales service in the industry. Cello’s goal is not only to provide an efficient and professional after sales facility, but also to offer superior technical support. Both of these services are highly advanced in comparison to the after sales offered by its competitors.
Domestic solar power systems are often fitted with a battery system that can be charged during the day and then used during the night (when solar panels are unable to generate electricity.) The same principle applies for solar garden lighting where a light unit will charge its internal battery during the day so that there is enough electricity stored to power its light bulb during the night. A modern take on the principle of using solar energy to charge battery packs can be seen with the introduction of solar charging kits for handheld appliances such as smartphones and tablets. These come in a variety of forms and allow you to charge your devices on the go providing there is an adequate source of solar energy. The Cello solar powered TV is an out of the box solution that is simple to operate. The TV is positioned in the viewing area whilst the solar panel and smart antenna is placed in a suitable location outdoors. The internal battery can be changed if needed. Cello products are distributed throughout the UK and also has business operations in Kenya as it aims to expand its business to other African countries.

“In order to help your project acquire the funding it needs, RECP has developed a database of equity, loan and grant facilities for private renewable energy projects in Africa” Alexander Huppertz
How RECP connect African Entrepreneurs to Investors By Obineme Ndubuisi Micheal Africa Renewable Energy Cooperation Program (RECP), Project Manager, Alexander Huppertz has provided an onverview of RECP involvement in project financing in the African region. Speaking in an exclusive interview with Oil and Gas Republic Journalist during the match making session at Solar Future Nigeria 2017, Alexander Huppertz said that Africa Renewable Energy Cooperation Program (RECP) is a European development program funded by the European Union and commissioned in various zones with the aim of improving energy access, increasing the shares of renewables through market development by providing market information for private sector stakeholders and organizing series of match making platforms for entrepreneurs from Europe and Africa and as well as helping country projects to access funding. Financing Projects RECP doesn't finance project directly but have a network of financiers which it work

with and have agreement with the financiers to enhance the quality of projects before laying the projects to the financiers. In one word, RECP connect African Entrepreneurs (project developers) to investors (financiers), Alexander, the project manager of Africa Renewable Energy Cooperation Program, has said.
Project Development RECP work with financiers by liasing and making them understand what kind of projects is ready for development, what kind of business models and market segment that is currently in service from companies operating in this market in order to enable them make use of their financial products effectively.
Quality of Projects Alexander, who is the project manager of RECP, said that there are lots of project developers that has no access to finance but sometimes if you attend events in Europe for instance, you will hear people say there are lots of renewable energy projects available in Africa which needs finance and after all the research and development on the projects, we will find out that there is no ready made projects on ground. In this kind of situation, RECP works strictly to verify the authenticity of the projects before laying them to investors. “We also work on breaching the gaps between project developers and financiers to bringing both parties together, he added”
Business Services According to Alexander, RECP offers a whole range of business activities, matchmaking platforms, information workshop, provide market profiles for entrepreneurs that doesn't really know much about the energy sector in Nigeria & Africa and interested to enter the market. RECP's website provides useful information for the energy sector. “We also provide various trainings, business activities in the private sector and to stakeholders and we also have a component on policy adversory which is focused on private sector cooperation, he added"

Exclusive Interview
THE PROJECT MANAGER WHO HAS HELPED TO STEER ENERGY PROJECT AT RECP PROJECT MANAGER I ALEXANDER HUPPERTZ I RECP Alexander Huppertz, Project Manager at Africa Renewable Energy Cooperation Program (RECP), tells Oil and Gas Republic Journalist, Obineme Ndubuisi Micheal how they help project developers in Nigeria & Africa by connecting them to financiers irrespective of the projects. He said that RECP was launched in Nigeria since August 2016 and have currently advised over 25 projects in total.
Tell us about RECP evolutionary journey to the Nigerian Energy Market? Africa Renewable Energy Cooperation Program (RECP) was launched in Nigeria since August 2016. We help project developers (entrepreneurs) in Nigeria access finance not only equity or debt funding but also include risk mitigation. We also work closely with TCX fund and we provide our support services by a way of verifying those projects that has risk mitigation instrument as we aren't able take away the risk and the risk is there already. For instance, if you hedge your credit in hard currency and you have your revenue in local currency it will remain a major challenge especially if there is currency flotation as Nigeria experienced it some few years back. There are different ways of looking into the future on how these could change. One would be lending in local currency so that there will be an opportunity to get debt funding in Naira directly so that your revenue in funding will remain in the same denomination and i think that might take sometime before we could reach the point where there will be local funds available. On a recent development, local banks and African banks are beginning to realize the potential of renewable energy investment though there are still challenges in finding the right projects to deploy the right risk mitigation but i think there will be lots of improvement in the coming years.
Please can you briefly highlight some of RECP’s success stories in Nigeria and as well as Africa? Since August 2016, we started these services in Nigeria so its relatively new and so far we have currently advised over 25 projects (total) in the world. Our role in the Nigerian energy market is enormous as we usually ask Nigerian entrepreneurs (project developers) to submit details of their project so we could connect them to the right financiers based on the structure of the project. Since we came into the Nigerian market, we have successfully done over 2 projects and the project developers have access to funds right now. In Africa, our first project that reached financial close was in Burundi. These project will increase the energy generating capacity in Burundi by 14%.
The RECP connects African and European Developers and Investors
In the meantime, we are actively looking for more projects in Africa and applications to submit projects is still open. If your subscribers at Oil and Gas Republic have any projects they should submit them to us for review and proper evaluation.
RECP supports European and African entrepreneurs through the provision of dedicated market information. www.oilandgasrepublic.com

What size of projects do you work on? We operate within the medium size project such as 300 to 500MW hydro damn or 300MW wind power projects. We are focused on middle scale projects everything from 4.5MW to 50 - 80MW projects and we also have interest on small projects below 500 kilowatts. We do everything from the solar home systems through all the way like home consumption projects for industry that isn't connected in the grid but directly consumed from processing plant all the way up to the grid. In terms of market segment, we cover the entire range but only on the utility scale because we aren't doing the big projects. At RECP, we work on all renewables from biomass, biogass, hydro, solar, wind etc... On hydro, we focus on small hydro damns not the big hydro business but among these, we deal on all the technologies.
Based on you vast experience in solar energy, how do you think solar energy will contribute to Nigerian energy mix? Solar energy can be part of the solution in resolving the Nigerian energy crisis and i wouldn't suggest that Nigeria will run on 100% solar but solar energy will always be an energy mix in the power sector of Nigeria.
For the foreseable future, Gas Power Plant will have a role to play in the Nigerian energy mix hopefully with the diminishing one or also with the new climate change objectives which has become a top priority for the country.
Possible Solution The way forward is certainly distributing the energy mix across various resources of the power sector. And, looking at the abundant resources in Nigeria, it will be the combination of large scale solar plant and we need to be mindful of the amount of megawatts hours these solar plants will be able to produce and also put in place the infrastructures that will work efficiently with the solar plants. Though there might be limited opportunities for large scale wind project in some areas and there are several hydro site that can be allocated and if you combine all these resources including small scale solar in the metropolitan area, you will end up with a combination where you have gas plant to reduce baseload and you will have a growing solar component, wind component and hydro component which underpins for these loads as well and it will provide a sustainable system. But again, before this can ever be put into place, there is a lot of work that needs to be done on the grid.
We would like to use this medium to thank our event partners for their continuous support to Oil and Gas Republic in 2017!

Nigeria’s leading power exhibition, Power Nigeria, is dedicated to the burgeoning Nigerian power industry. Prior to this B2B trade event, the organisers of Power Nigeria, Informa Exhibitions, will gather a large number of leading power personalities and stakeholders to present plans for the future of the Nigerian Power Sector. With Informa’s strong track record of organising exhibitions (including the world’s largest power event, Middle East Electricity),
Power Nigeria is poised to become the country’s main hub for trade and knowledge share within the Nigerian power sector. The overwhelming sentiment that the Nigerian power market has great potential but the sector requires major action. With President Muhammadu Buhari’s public commitment to invest heavily in the power sector, the Power Nigeria exhibition and conference takes place at a critical time for contractors, consultants, distributors and traders to forge strong relationships with international and local suppliers. Electricity delivered safely, reliably and affordably is commensurate with the growth of a nation and the single, most
impactful element when it comes to personal comfort. According to report, Nigeria produced about 5,000 MW of power on the National Grid for about 180 million people in 2016, falling extremely short of expectations. Government incentives have made Nigeria a highly competitive destination with massive untapped resources in power (generation to distribution). Power Nigeria exhibition and conference has become the platform where the who’s who of the Nigerian power industry - from decision makers and industry leaders to experts and engineers - gather to collaborate towards a brighter future for the country. The 2017 edition of Power Nigeria will be its brightest one yet, with over 200 exhibitors from 12 countries and a special country pavilion from the middle east featuring their companies. SOLAR FUTURE NIGERIA 2017
Nigeria’s Electricity Potentials Unlocked at Solar Future Nigeria 2017 By Obineme Ndubuisi Micheal Nigerian electricity potentials was unlocked at Solar Future Nigeria 2017, first PV conference held in Lagos and organized by Solarplaza. The event brought together over 250 industry p r o f es s i o n a ls , g o v e r n me n t o ff i ci als , developers, and investors. Based on the huge interest of solar energy investment, Nigeria is on the spotlight and has become a leader in solar energy in the African region. According to the report from the event, The sector is on a good way to roll-out large-scale renewables. Renewables (in particular PV solar) can add much needed generation capacity in a relatively short period of time compared to conventional power plants with longer construction times. There are a lot of advantages that authorities will need to explore. Some major challenges in expanding renewables in the region includes inconsistencies in the regulatory framework, lack of protection of investors and long licensing procedures etc... With regards to the current state of renewable energy in the country, Renewable energy over the years has received significant attention from policy makers, investors, private sector, civil society, and others owing to its great potential in the country. The recent privatization of the
www.oilandgasrepublic.com
Nigerian Power Sector has also helped to address the need for the deployment of renewable energy in various locations of the country. According to reports from Industry experts, Renewable Energy is the advantage of renewables over other conventional energy sources. The integration of renewable energy systems into the national system need not follow the conventional power infrastructure. Renewable Energy technologies are very compatible with a decentralized, stand-alone or small power generating unit, which enables local/rural communities far from urban areas to have access to basic electricity needs. Furthermore renewable energy off-grid systems do not put unnecessary burden on existing grid capacity, neither do they require system balancing nor need to be managed by the national grid system operators. But, there is a unique opportunity for African countries to have a diversified energy source and yet to limit the risks of exposing the continent to the current high costs of power infrastructure which are not expected to decline in the nearest future. The renewable energy sector in Nigeria is growing fast and with the right framework, large and small scale projects are doable.
Unrestricted access to electric power, provides enormous opportunity, economic growth and importantly, it connects the West Nigerian people with the rest of the world. Providing adequate electricity in Nigeria, to homes and businesses, remains a primary concern for the development of the Nigerian economy. Although, power production has incrementally increased across the nation, with a goal of producing over 5,000 megawatts (MW) of cleaner electricity generation capacity. Every new connection provides opportunities for individuals and businesses across the nation to achieve their potentials and overcome common obstacles of economic growth. This positive trajectory will be attainable if sustainability is effectively integrated into developmental plans, through planning that will include; domestic capacity development for infrastructure management, leveraging private sector investment and building transparent governmental partnerships with stakeholders. Additionally, implementing critical and resourceful policy reforms, will attract investment to the sector.

protocols and do not have sufficient built-in cybersecurity functions to combat the increasingly sophisticated range of security threats they face. An effective security approach and solutionis needed, to further help the energy sector in managing this. Such an approach to cybersecurity in the energy sector must accumulate intelligence on the latest threats, in order to develop protection technologies that are effective. This is especially true for industrial infrastructure, which has specific threats, highly customised hardware and software, and strict requirements for reliability.
Malicious attacks on industrial systems – including industrial control systems (ICS) and supervisory control and data acquisition systems (SCADA) – have increased significantly in recent years. As the Stuxnet and BlackEnergy attacks have shown, one infected USB drive or single spear-phishing email is all it takes for attackers to bridge the air gap and penetrate an isolated network. lectrical power equipment automation, control and protection are no longer handled by c l o s e d systems and, as things stand, detecting a potential threat can be extremely difficult, both technically and organisationally. The energy sector needs to start paying very careful attention to IT security of their industrial infrastructure. Energy enterprises need to bolster their defenses to combat increasingly prevalent cyberattacks and avoid the nightmare scenario of complete loss of service – not to mention the impact that this would have on citizens and society in general, should an attack happen. There may be some overlap in the threats, however there are significant differences between the cyber securityrequirements of ICS environments and those of general business.Corporate environments focus on safeguarding confidential data; when it comes to industrial systems, where every minute of downtime or error counts, uninterrupted operations are the ultimate priority. This is what distinguishes industrial cybersecurity from other businesses – and makes working withthe right security vendor so important. Industrial cybersecurity solutions should include three key pillars: • A process-based approach to security implementation • Employee awareness/education • Technologies created specifically for industrial environments Kaspersky Lab’s industrial cybersecurity approach is holistic: • Process: There’s no out-of-box solution for industrial cybersecurity. It’s a process that begins withan audit, prepares people for change and moves through gradual roll-out with minimal disruption. • People: Every employee – from business to factory floor – plays a role in cybersecurity. Trainingand education, such as Kaspersky Industrial Protection Simulation (KIPS) game, is vital. • Technology: Kaspersky Lab has developed solutions based on unique technologies, designed specificallyfor industrial security needs. Fault-tolerant and non-disruptive, they can even work in air-gap conditions. Safeguarding Enterprises and Critical Infrastructure in the Energy Industr:y Through our research, Kaspersky Lab have identified a few key challenging areas within the energy sector that need more attention, in order to safeguard enterprises and critical Infrastructure in thisindustry. These include: • Open and unprotected communication lines between protection and control system components, as well as between power infrastructure facilities. • Lack of cybersecurity awareness among employees - a limited number of technical personnel maintain large numbers of devices that are oftendistributed on a territory and function without permanent monitoring. On-site personnel often lack even a basic knowledge of cybersecurity. • Security requirements are not followed - information security requirements are rarely considered in the device or software design and development processes for technological infrastructures.
www.oilandgasrepublic.com
• Complexities of contractor access control - the use of contracting organisations for certain types of maintenance work is common.Consequently however, it is extremely important to provide only temporary access to a limitedamount of equipment that has no influence on other system components, and cancellation ofaccess on completion of the work is vital. • Long lifetime of vulnerable components - the lifetime of devices and protection and control systems is 20-30 years. This means that insecure systemsinstalled today will only be replaced in a couple of decades or so. In addition to this, the lack of guidelines defining actions to be taken when suspicious activity is detected within automated systems, also leads to an organisation being vulnerable. Furthermore, the lack of documents and practices relating to the investigation of disturbances in technological environments - including malicious influence on control systems through information technologies, also leads to further vulnerability (for example, due to their age, some reference documents for the investigation and classification of technological disturbances do not even consider cybersecurity incidents as a possible cause of malfunction). If such an incident even takes place, the concern is that the real causes will not be revealed. As a result, the appropriate measures will not be taken and the incident may reoccur. Given these realities, it is evident that the energy sector needs to invest in IY security that effectively safeguards their infrastructure and takes all of the above into account. The IEC 62351 “Power systems management and associated information exchange - Data and communications security” standard describes in detail the possible tools for complex information security provision at electric power facilities. However, most of the proposed solutions can only be implemented with a complete replacement of automation devices as soon as they require format and communication protocol procedure modifications. Even though a full implementation of IEC 62351 looks like a distant prospect under the circumstances, part of the requirements can be fulfilled and applied to modern systems. Kaspersky Industrial CyberSecurity (KICS)is a holistic solution for industrial infrastructures that fulfills these requirements.

A number of factors make the terminal unique: it is located in a free economic zone of an ice-free deep-water port, has convenient transport links and collaborates closely with chemical and petrochemical terminals located nearby. The VARS petrochemical terminal includes several key sites with critical infrastructure: • A loading/unloading platform, equipped with loading points that can simultaneously handle 12 rail tank cars or 20 rail containers, enabling product loading at a rate of up to 110m3/hr • A tank farm of six tanks, each holding 2,000m3 • Onshore and offshore product pipeline sections - two strings with a diameter of 200mm and each with a pipeline length of 1,200m • A gas cleaning unit designed to capture and clean acrylonitrile vapours from exhaust gases that form during loading and unloading operations and during storage in tanks • A fixed offshore shipping berth Challenge As operations at VARS involve the handling of hazardous toxic materials, it is very important to eliminate any human errors. Operational processes are therefore automated and managed by ICS/SCADA. Because of this reliance on automation, information security is critical. A random virus attack or internal security breach may present a threat not only to the business itself but also to employees and the environment, as the company is located only 120 metres from the Baltic Sea and is very close to the populated area of Ventspils. The stable running of the shipment terminal is essential to the business. “If the VARS terminal stops operating, this could disrupt the normal functioning of the plant, which would cause significant financial losses and technology problems associated with the restarting of the chemical facility,” says VARS Technical Director, Roman Yanukovich. The fact that this is an industrial network, however, means it is impossible to use standard IT security software designed for corporate environments. The Kaspersky Lab Solution “Having spoken with our partner SIA Latus SARDZE and having studied the market, we opted for the Kaspersky Industrial CyberSecurity solution to protect the industrial control system for the acrylonitrile shipment and storage line,” says VARS Technical Director, Roman Yanukovich. “What interested us most was the application control whitelisting mode that only allows trusted programmes to be launched.” Roman Yanukovich, Technical Director, SIA VARS also said "Kaspersky Industrial CyberSecurity meets thier requirements in full and has also enabled functions such as device control as well as centralised control and monitoring of the protected units.“

ANECO is a Russian oil refining company and part of the $15 billion Ta t n e f t G r o u p . T h e company was created in 2005 to drive oil and petrochemical production in the Tatarstan region of the country. It is the first industrial facility of its scale built from scratch in post-Soviet Russia. The project continues to increase production, contributing significantly to the Tatarstan economy. By unit capacity, Tatneft is now Russia’s largest oil refinery.
www.oilandgasrepublic.com
The next phase of development will see TANECO expand its mix of petroleum products in line with international production standards and environmental compliance. TANECO’s strategy is to focus on hi-tech, efficient and environmentally friendly oil refining processes. The company plans to create a range of oilbased products, strengthening vertical integration within the Tatneft Group. Challenge TANECO’s success is heavily reliant on the continuity of manufacturing processes. The company uses industrial control systems (ICS) to deliver a technology edge over the competition and minimize production costs. However, the growing level of production automation and the use of technologies originally designed for corporate networks in its industrial infrastructure have exposed the company to the risk of cyber-attacks. TANECO initially brought in Kaspersky Lab to audit the IT security of its rail discharge terminal handling vacuum gas oil (VGO) supplies. Kaspersky Lab was then challenged with implementing a pilot project to demonstrate cyber security functionality for operator/engineering workstations and SCADA servers. Part of the cybersecurity system would also need to monitor the integrity of the industrial network and control the critical parameters of the process flow. The requirements also stated that the solution should not interfere with the existing industrial control system. The Kaspersky Lab solution Marat Gilmutdinov, Head of Industrial Control Systems Department, TANECO, says the business has worked with Kaspersky Lab for years: “We’ve relied on Kaspersky Lab for many years to protect our corporate network. We didn’t think twice when it came to choosing who to trust with the information security of our industrial facilities. “Having analyzed the potential threats faced by hi-tech oil refineries, we opted for the Kaspersky Industrial CyberSecurity solution by Kaspersky Lab. It was important for us to buy a solution developed domestically by a vendor capable of providing prompt assistance with any possible issues during deployment and operation.” Results Gilmutdinov says the project to secure the VGO discharge terminal was completed successfully, with Kaspersky Lab experts working alongside TANECO’s in-house team: “The capabilities of Kaspersky Industrial CyberSecurity exceeded all our expectations. Just months after deployment, Kaspersky Industrial CyberSecurity detected an unauthorized connection attempt by an outside laptop to one of the controllers. The attackers were attempting to modify the operation settings of a sensor. “The project demonstrates that solutions like this can be used successfully with industrial facilities. TANECO plans to further expand cooperation with Kaspersky Lab in providing security for its industrial networks.”

Marat Gilmutdinov, Head of Industrial Control Systems Department, TANECO said that “ The performance of Kaspersky Industrial CyberSecurity exceeded all our expectations. Just months after deployment, the solution detected an unauthorized connection attempt by an outside laptop to one of the controllers.” oday’s approach to cybersecurity highlights the importance of accumulating intelligence on the latest threats, in order to develop protection technologies. This is especially true for industrial infrastructure, which has specific threats, highly customised hardware and software, and strict requirements for reliability. As a security vendor, we have years of experience analysing threats and helping industrial operators with threat prevention and detection, incident response, staff training, and the prediction of future attack vectors. We are confident that sharing intelligence, or, in a broader way, exchanging knowledge between vendors and operators, is an important step towards more secure critical infrastructure. By establishing Industrial Systems Computer Emergency Response Team (known as Kaspersky Lab ICSCERT) we are expanding the availability of the industry’s expertise in a way that no other private security vendor has done before.
T
establishing data and information transfer standards for multivendor, multi-platform, secure and reliable industrial interoperability independent from markets. Protecting ICS environments calls for a very different approach from that used for securing business IT systems. For business IT networks, the first priority is maintaining the confidentiality of sensitive business data – and, although availability of the IT service is important, it’s not as vital as confidentiality and integrity. However, the reverse is true for industrial control – where continuous availability of the process is paramount. It’s all about protecting the process and eliminating disruptions. The other vital difference is related to the technologies that are used in ICS environments. Although business IT networks are largely based on a few standard operating systems, applications and hardware components, this isn’t the case for industrial systems. ICS environments can be extremely customised and complex – full of proprietary technologies, SCADA servers, HumanMachine Interfaces, PLCs and legacy or obsolete sub-systems. This adds to the security challenge as every business’s control infrastructure is unique and the security solution has to be tailored to fit this.

As part of our CSR at Ibis, we usually use some part of our savings, send some part of the money to our group to plant trees. At Ibis Lagos Ikeja, we planted One Hundred and Seventeen Trees last year but our group planted two tress each around the environments where it operates.
OGR: What do you think should be done to resolve these challenges? JEAN: First of all, we need to reduce the cost of energy by diversifying into alternative energy. Secondly, we need to have a school that is specialized in hospitality training and you can barely find an hotel staff in Nigeria that speaks foreign languages. In Nigeria, the hotel staff speaks Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa and English fluently but for us, we speak German, French, Spanish. In today's hotel business here in Nigeria, a staff will be employed as a waiter unfortunately these staff do not have a good knowledge of the job because they didn't have hospitality training. Another issues we face here, some staffs will be employed in the hotel not knowing that they have their own personal ambition for the job. That is to say, they are working in the hotel in order to save money to go back to school as they aren't taking the hotel job as a profession that has a long-term opportunity. In the hotel business, you can start your career as a waiter and later on you will become a general manager. OGR: What has been your secret of making Ibis Lagos Ikeja the most successful hotels in Lagos? JEAN: When i came here to manage Ibis hotel, I provided an orientation training to my team in making sure they establish a good customer relationship by listening to the guests comments and observations about the hotel. At Ibis, we do a lot of training to our staffs as this is a key factor for us. We train our staffs regularly to meet up to international standard as you know the best marketing is the word of mouth. OGR: How can you rate your hotel business experience in Nigeria? JEAN: Currently, i have 3 years experience for hotel business in Nigeria. Based on my experience in managing hotels in other countries, Nigerian staffs are difficult to manage because they don't have the basic training in the hospitality industry unlike other advance countries. The staffs here have little knowledge of guest orientation. JEAN: I would say 99% of our staffs at Ibis Lagos Ikeja are Nigerians. OGR: What has been the contribution of Ibis to Lagos state economy? JEAN: Firstly, we pay a lot of tax and as one of the most successful hotels in Lagos, we have created lots of jobs. As you know, a business that is doing well will definitely create opportunities for job seekers and that is exactly what we are contributing to the economy of Lagos state. Ibis has over 4,000 hotels worldwide. We are also doing some environmental cleanup in the communities around us. Recently, we did some environmental cleanup in Allen avenue, Ikeja by constructing a drainage system with the aim of keeping the environment clean. We are also planting trees and flowers around the environment around us and all our hotels in our group are also doing this kind of initiative. OGR: Please can you list some of the things you will be doing in 2017? JEAN: This year, we will be doing some new things in the local communities by providing foods for the less privileged (orphanage homes). We will be going at the orphanage homes to cook for them, giving them good food. And, we will also provide soaps for them with the aim of improving the quality of life in that community . We also organize events on various innovative platforms as part of our corporate social responsibility and we invite schools around us to come for the event. But i have developed a new action plan to execute some projects in the Northern part of Nigeria where there are problems. We are on the process of finalizing the structures of the projects as this will contribute a lot to the economic well being of the people living in the communities. We plan to build bore holes for water, plant trees and provide other social amenities for the communities in the Northern region. OGR: We would like to know, what are your relationship with other hoteliers? JEAN: We have a very good relationship with other hotels and we don't do competition with them as we already have our own standard so likewise they have their own standard. Most times, every 3 months we usually have a roundtable discussion and launch with other hotel managers to discussing major issues affecting the industry and bringing innovative ideas to tackle the challenges. OGR: What can you say about Nigerian foods? JEAN: I don't really eat Nigerian foods as we all have our own limits and choice of food but we do have a lot of Nigerian foods here. OGR: Currently, how many rooms are in Ibis Lagos Ikeja? JEAN: We have 165 rooms in the hotel and all the rooms are fully equiped to international standard. OGR: Have any client used your hotel to organize oil and gas events? JEAN: Yes, Ibis Lagos Ikeja Hotel has been used to host lots of oil and gas events such as press conference, summit, forum and meetings. We have up to 5 conference halls in the hotel and one of the conference hall will contain up to 330 people. Our hotel has been used to host "Business Women of Nigeria". OGR: How many awards have Ibis Hotel won? JEAN: We have won several awards as one of the "Best Hotel in Guest Satisfaction" and we have also won an award on keeping on a good Hygiene etc... 'Nigeria is a country of serious minded and smart people. I have been in Lagos for some years now without any threat towards me and I feel saver to be in Lagos as i usually go out at night, walk alone and there hasn't been a threat to me since all these while' - Jean Jadas - Cont. In terms of waste management, we have created a different approach on this by creating several waste bin for each waste products. For instance, we have a different waste bin for plastics, irons, bottles and much more... We don't put all our waste in one place. OGR: What message do you have for other hotel owners in Nigeria? JEAN: My advise for hotel owners is for them to keep aside profit and run the business as a profession. And if they want to be very successful in this hotel business, they should understand that hotel business isn't all about the big buildings but its about the day to day activities and quality of service but unfortunately some hotels here doesn't have these standards in terms of quality of service. Hotels that doesn't have a good quality of service will suffer in this kind of economy recession currently in Nigeria when it comes to price of commodities. At Ibis, we make sure we maintain our best price on a discounted rates because the more you give discounts on your prices, you will definitely get more sales. In hotel business, the incomes are categorized in three parts namely: First part of your income should be allocated for tax and salary payment. Second part of your income will be your profit and while the other Third part should be allocated for maintenance and renovations of your hotel infrastructure. If there are no budgets for maintenance of your hotel infrastructures within some couple of years your hotel will lose its value. The bathrooms, rooms and facilities will not be in a proper standard.
General Manager, ibis Lagos Ikeja Hotel, Oil and Gas Republic Journalist, Micheal Obineme spotted putting on a white & black shirt. OGR: Please can you give us a brief about your life experience in the hotel business? JEAN: A long years ago, I started the hotel business in Italy from there i worked in the caribbean where i became a special adviser to a Small Scale Food & Beverages company and during my position we were able to open over 2,000 outlets for food & beverages. I got a job in Sheraton in the pacific and i have also worked in Cuba always as a general manager including hotels in Africa and finally came to Nigeria.
In terms of the hotel service price, they should provide various price options for their customers with a quality service based on the prices available. "If you offer quality services to your customers, they will come back to your hotel"
JEAN: We have clients from Shell, Total, Technip, Exxonmobil and much more...
The hotel owners shouldn't combines their personal account to the hotel business account.
OGR: In one word, how has the journey been so far at Ibis Lagos Ikeja Hotel?
OGR: What other thing do you think is lacking in the Nigerian hospitality industry?
JEAN: As the General Manager here at Ibis, it has given me the opportunity to learn new things on the daily activities of the business. Everyday is different, you don't know who will be the next guest and what will be their need.
JEAN: We are importing many things here in Nigeria. For example, if we have any problem in our generator sometimes the part aren't here so we have to import. Food items are also imported here. If you want a good meat, you have to import it. We don't produce locally.

JEAN: Nigeria is a country of serious minded and smart people. You will know when to go out so you won't meet the traffic in the road and if you know exactly when to go out, life will be very easy for you here in Nigeria. Though Nigeria is a country with a lot of challenges but i strongly believe the economy situation will soon go back to normal. I have been in Lagos for some years now without any threat towards me and Lagos is a business city where you will see lots of opportunities. Lagos is known to be the most lively city in Africa. Nigerian people are good but what i found out about Nigeria is that the country has a bad reputation outside so the Government should try and clear the bad reputation of Nigeria abroad. I feel saver to be in Lagos and i usually go out at night, walk alone and there hasn't been a threat to me since all these while. I have traveled to Abuja, Illorin and Port Harcourt and i don't see any threats to my life, Nigeria is a good country.
OGR: Please can you tell us some of the interesting things you like about Nigeria?

Ibis Hotel to Embark on Community Development in the Northern region of Nigeria ibis Lagos Ikeja Hotel has plan to embark on community development in the Northern part of Nigeria. Speaking with the MD of ibis Hotel in Lagos on an exclusive interview, he said, "We developed a new action plan to execute some projects in the Northern part of Nigeria where there are problems. We are on the process of finalizing the structures of the projects as this will contribute a lot to the economic well being of the people living in the communities. We plan to build bore holes for water, plant trees and provide other social amenities for the communities in the Northern region. The North is the breadbasket of Nigeria. A significant proportion of the food we eat down South comes from the North. The North occupies 70% of Nigeria’s land mass, giving it comparative advantage visà -vis the South in terms of agriculture, raw materials and livestock. Northern Nigeria is bigger than most African countries. More interesting, the North is rich in mineral resources; far richer than the South. There is gold in Zamfara; uranium

OPINION
Hospitality and oil and gas industry work in synergy to ensure the sustainability of a nation’s economy - Tobi Hotels are important globally as providing the facilities for recreation and entertainment, meeting and conferences and business transmission. Hotels contribute the output of goods and related services which build wellbeing of their nations and communities. Visitors spend the hotels and contribute the local economies directly and indirectly. When foreign visitors avail the facilities of these hotels the foreign currency is earned through the visitor's payments. Hospitality industry becomes the source of employment especially for the labors and management. Thousands of jobs are provided to locals as well as foreigners by these hotels in its different occupations. Hotels are also an alternative source for the locals as amenities. The importance of the hospitality industry to oil and gas companies cannot be over emphasised. Hotels provide great atmosphere for the organisation of most highly placed oil and gas conferences, seminars and workshop. In Lagos, Nigeria, for example, top notch facilities can be found in most hotels in the city centre. Most of these hotels have also upgraded their facilities to provide a great atmosphere for the hosting of events. Organisation is a key element in events planning. Some of these big hotels together with provision of halls and instruments, mapout strategies to organise events for oil and gas companies. This is a separate department in most hotels.

Owoyimika Tobi Timothy, Education Officer 2, Nigeria Police Force Education Unit, Nasarawa State Police Command Provision of instruments to organisers of events is also another key importance of hotels. Some of the instruments include, sound Microphones, speakers, amplifiers, speaker stands, eye catching seats, and many more. However, the oil and gas companies have also contributed their quota to hotels, in terms of

The newly installed 30MVA 132/33kV power transformer which was moved to Gombe 132kV Substation from Yola Transmission Station, increased the station’s capacity from 105MVA to 135MVA. The increase in capacity positively impacted power supply to distribution load centers in Gombe and its environs. Furthermore, TCN had also successfully installed two 66MVA 132/33kV power transformers in its Katampe and Alagbon Transmission Stations in Abuja and Lagos respectively, increasing bulk load wheeling capacity of Katampetransmission sub-station at 132kV voltage level, from 120MVA to 126MVA and Alagbon Substation capacity to312MVA on 132kV voltage level. Ikeja Electric calls for community support in protecting electrical equipment in Igando, Lagos State Power supply to Igando, a bustling community located in Alimosho local government area of Lagos State, South-Western Nigeria has been severely compromised, following a wave of vandalism of electrical installations belonging to Ikeja Electric plc. The criminal activities, which has currently plunged over 6,000 households and businesses located in and aroundIgando into darkness, have largely targeted transformers where single core and up-riser cables worth millions of naira were carted away. Head, Corporate Communications for Ikeja Electric Plc, Felix Ofulue, decried the development, noting that the increase in the vandalism of the company’s assets had become quite alarming and is depriving legitimate customers of their right to steady power supply. “In the past two week, over 24 transformers were vandalizedin Igando, leaving our customers in total darkness and this is quite worrisome considering the discomfort and economic loss to this community. It is quite troubling and intolerable because innocent customers are suffering,” he said. Ofuluenoted that the cost of replacing the stolen assets was
huge and would take some time to restore. He further called on community leaders, youth associations and security agencies to make improved efforts to ensure that electrical assets within their communities were protected. While explaining that the company is partnering with security agencies to track the vandals, he also encouraged vigilant members of the community to report suspected vandals to the appropriate authorities or to Ikeja Electric for prompt action.
“These vandals sometimes operate from within the community. They keep the stolen assets somewhere. They sell to someone. It is possible that one or two people may see something, so we are calling on these vigilant and patriotic members of the community to speak up, so we can nip this in the bud. Don’t forget that as a business, it is counter-productive to keep replacing assets in a particular location, spending our limited resources, when we could be expanding the network and improving supply in another”, Ofulue concluded.
He further warned that collaborators in the crime when caught would face the full extent of the law. He pointed out that Section 1(9) of the Miscellaneous Offences Act provided a stiff punishment, up to life imprisonment, for offenders who unlawfully disconnect, remove, damage, tamper or meddle with or in any way whatsoever interferes with any plant, works, cables, wire or assembly of wires designed or used for transforming or converting electricity shall be guilty of an offence. Only recently, thirty-year-old Ahmed Umar was sentenced to six months in prison at a Lagos Magistrates’ Court, Ogudu, for vandalizing a transformer belonging to Ikeja Electric. He was alleged to have stolen a copper wire valued N100,000 from a 500KVA transformer located at Olutunfese substation, by Demurin Street in Ketu, Alapere.
