APC Technology and Pinssar Launches the World’s First Continuous DPM Reader for mining operations Designed for use in enclosed harsh environments where diesel exhaust emissions can potentially present a threat to human health and safety.

The Pinssar diesel particulate matter (DPM) reader provides real-time smart monitoring of DPM below 800 nanometres on a continuous basis by utilising laser light scattering photometry as a way of measuring particles in the ambient air. The reader is specifically designed to be deployed in enclosed environments such as underground mines, construction sites, workshops and tunnels, and in a wide range of industries, including mining, defence, oil and gas, shipping and transport. Francoise Velge, Managing Director of Pinssar commented on the origins of the ground breaking technology. “Through my work in the mining sector I discovered there was no continuous monitoring technology available for harsh environments. I believed this was key to understanding the level of threat in confined areas rather than spot checking or reacting to the more obvious signs post exposure. After more than three years of development, testing and a multi-million dollar investment, Pinssar has now launched the world’s first continuous diesel particulate monitoring system for harsh environments.” To ensure the manufacturing cost requirements of producing the DPM Reader were met, Pinssar began the process of selecting a hardware partner who could enhance the design and manufacture of

www.oilandgasrepublic.com

the equipment. The key features included a rugged solution that would withstand the demands of an array of harsh environments, the ability to design and manufacture the internal layout of the unit, as well as managing internal and 3rd party testing for international certification. Francoise explained why they chose APC Technology. “During the development stage we commissioned a number of prototypes that met many of our requirements but we eventually reached the conclusion that an experienced hardware partner would be able to manufacture a cost effective hardware solution that was reliable and performed to our requirements. APC Technology are Australian based making it easy to work with them and with over 30 years experience in design and manufacture of ruggedised equipment, they brought a wealth of knowledge and expertise that has added value to the production process.” Scott Begbie, Managing Director of APC Technology further commented, “Pinssar’s DPM Reader is an industry first and we are delighted to be the hardware partner of choice. The collaborative relationship with Pinssar has enabled our in-house engineering team to enhance the productivity of the prototype and build further on the initial requirements. We are looking forward to being a long term hardware supplier and support centre for the DPM Reader worldwide.

“ Pinssar and APC Technology will be showcasing the DPM Reader on stand 3210 during AIMEX 2017. This will be held at the Sydney showgrounds from August 29th-31st. Pinssar’s DPM Reader technology utilises laser light scattering photometry as a way of measuring particles in the air, based on the scattering of light by those particles. The direction and amount of scattered light depends on the wavelength of light and the properties of the particles. The Pinssar solution is the first continuous reader and the first to combine a dashboard to allow for 24/7 monitoring data to be sent in ‘real time’ to nominated users, via smart phones, tablets, desktops and laptops anywhere in the world. Incorporated in 1984, APC Technology has long been regarded as a leader in the design and manufacture of cost effective, customised rugged hardware solutions. APC Technology designs and manufactures state of the art computer/control technology packages for industrial and military clients who have critical applications where failure is not an option.

Control Systems well positioned to provide the best Conveyor Belt Scale Technology for the mining industry Control Systems Technology (CST) was established since 1984, CST manufactures all components of weighers, including electronics and weighframes. The excellence of the original designs meant that little electronic or mechanical change was required in its designs when CST achieved trade certification of their weighers through NMI. A key feature of its weighers is their robust design and durability. A typical example is its four idler four loadcell belt weigher, the PFS44, 8 of which were supplied 20 years ago to Baal Bone Coal Preparation Plant in NSW. These 8 weighers are still in service and are still being regularly serviced by CST technicians. The site has now upgraded the electronics sets to latest model, so the equipment has seen only 2 generations of electronics in 20 years.Reliable belt weighing equipment has been long required by bulk handling industries, especially mining. Australian miners have maintained a strong interest new innovations in this field.

Australia has had a strong dependence on mining for many years. Some of the largest mining companies in the world have grown up on the basis of Australia's mineral wealth (BHP, RIO, Zinifex). Alongside the mining companies, a support industry which provides process control equipment, industrial computer systems and instrumentation has also emerged and has grown together with the miners providing important industrial control system equipment. (Citect, Logitech) With well over 1600 active installations, CST has become a major presence in the Australian and export markets, at times being the dominant manufacturer. Over 25 years, CST has maintained a solid, enduring presence in in-motion weighing. As well as continual product development, CST is investing heavily in building and training an extensive, readily available service and maintenance team to ensure the ongoing high performance our equipment is routinely capable of. There are many good reasons for using the manufacturer's own, specialist trained team, with backup and resources to handle everything from routine maintenance to troubleshooting 'mystery' problems. Our accumulated industry experience means our service team can help any make of weigher perform to its best possible capacity. Due to CST's contributions in the field of high accuracy belt weighing, CST has become involved in committee work with various government standards institutes.

CST took part in the Australian National Measurment Institutes' development of NMIV7, the Uniform Test Procedure standard for trade approved belt weighers. We have also been invited to sit on committees in the USA facilitated by the US National Institute of Standards and Technolgy , working on modifying and improving the current Handbook 44. We are working to increase respect for and increase knowledge about belt weighing, with the aim to improve the standard of belt weighing world wide. A key element of CST's success has been its focus on developing the technology to bring high accuracy weighing technology to critical, and high value material weighing applications. An early project was provision of a belt weigher on which bonus payments were based at a NSW coal mine. CST gained quick acceptance in diverse parts of Australia such as Dampier, Tom Price, Port Hedland, Hay Point, Blackwater and other remote mining areas. The mining industry was the initial market in which confidence and trust in CST products, service and expertise began. These customer relationships were the genesis for the ongoing approach of partnering relationships CST encourages for the life cycle of their products. CST is committed to being the best belt weigher company in the world by providing the most stable and most accurate products, by working closely with customers to learn about the real day to day issues involved in material transfer on conveyors.

ESS Engineering Services & Supplies provides a range of services to facilitate proper application and ongoing performance. These included Design (CAD), conveyor site surveys, servicing arrangements that include Site Surveys, and maintenance contracts. With branches in most major mining centres, we have the technology, resources and proven track record to get your fugitive material problems under control. Our technicians have received Foundations 4 Training and have extensive field experience, which gives them a unique perspective when solving conveyor related problems. ESS’s experience research and development department continually improves existing products and creating more easily installed, serviced and maintained products in order to reduce manual handling hazards and increase efficiency. The research and development department consistently communicates with ESS’s service technicians for feedback on innovations and suggested improvements.

In underground coal belts fed by long wall mining processes, and in other applications in industry, migration of abrasive fines to the centre of the belt means that belt cleaners experience high wear rates at belt centre. To overcome this, ESS developed the centre pivoting mainframe, which allows the centre blades to be adjusted against the belt independently of the outer blades. This results in much more even blade wear, better cleaning, and longer usable blade life. ESS Engineers have expertise int the containment of dust laden air within conveyor enclosures. In a natural progression to augment this existing knowledge, ESS have collected data from research in the USA, Germany and Australia on the suppression of dust outside of the enclosure. As part of its research and development initiatives, ESS and Martin Engineering funded a research project at TUNRA (The University of Newcastle Research Associates). The result of the project is the ICT Carryback Gauge, which is the only gauge in the world capable of producing accurate and repeatable readings.

OIL AND GAS NEWS

IGCS to address South Africa’s potential to become international gas hub A conference taking place in Durban from 9-11 October is set to explore South Africa’s aspirations to build an energy hub for gas cooperation with international partners along the value chain. The International Gas Cooperation Summit (IGCS) evolves from the ‘South Africa: Gas Options’ meetings held in Cape Town in 2015 & 2016.

The conversation in October is also not squarely about South Africa, but its relationship with international partners and Southern Africa’s ability to develop gas based projects to electrify and empower the region. Similarities must be drawn with the UAE 20 years ago and how they leveraged gas as the foundation of their now unimaginably rich economies.

We’re looking forward to taking this discussion to the next level with our partners.” IGCS will showcase gas procurement and utilisation projects and strategies, bringing together decision makers who can lay the cornerstone of the region’s success and enable South Africa to become an energy hub to support industrial development across the region.

The agenda will focus on the global gas outlook for Southern Africa, case studies on modelling a gas economy, South Africa’s gas market in the context of the SADC region, how to accelerate gas infrastructure and the cost of diving into downstream.

A special conference for the Black Industrialists Programme with its major stakeholders will take place alongside the broader meeting, drawing on partners from the last two Gas Options meetings to continue to support the crucial objectives for both international and national investors.

This meeting will bring together principal government and public sector, gas developers, institutional investors and technology providers to explore how natural gas can play a greater role in South Africa’s energy mix and support the industrial and economic development goals of the country. EnergyNet’s Anna Gorzkowska commented, “When we launched IGCS at the South Africa: Gas Options meeting last year in Cape Town, we knew that the landscape was changing and the discussion going forward would be broader to incorporate the DTI’s gas utilisation programme. We’re therefore delighted to have got the timing of this meeting right - there is so much interest not only in the gas for power programme, but the massive infrastructure and energy projects happening as a result of those anchor discussions.

World’s Energy Giants to Convene at Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference (ADIPEC) 2017 An unprecedented number of opportunities for Minister-to-global business leader strategic dialogue, along with a record number of expert submissions on a wide range of industry challenges and trends, will see the world’s energy leaders converge on the UAE capital for the Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference (ADIPEC) 2017, later this year.

and supported by the UAE Ministry of Energy, the Abu Dhabi Chamber, and the Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority, ADIPEC will take place from 13 to 16 November 2017, at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC).

Ali Khalifa Al Shamsi, Al Yasat CEO and ADIPEC 2017 Chairman, said: “Abu Dhabi has always served as an international gathering place for the Held under the patronage of His Highness energy world’s best and brightest.
