Star surprise for Thronies on fan tour FANS OF the worldwide hit TV series Game of Thrones are currently in a frenzy following the highly-anticipated launch of Season 7. To celebrate the event, TripAdvisor recently announced the top 10 most popular ‘Game of Thrones’ tours throughout the world, based on booking data. At number one was the 'Game of Thrones Walking Tour of Dubrovnik’ in Croatia from Viator, offering visits to the real-life attractions used for some of the show’s fictional locations, including Lovrijenac Fortress, Blackwater Bay and a trip to Trsteno Arboretum. In a surprise for ‘Thronies’, TripAdvisor teamed up with cast member Kristian Nairn to surprise unsuspecting tour-goers on the GoT tour ranked number one in the UK and number three in the world. This full-day tour from Belfast in Northern Ireland takes visitors to the UNESCO-listed Giant’s Causeway and Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge while also visiting key filming locations, such as the Dark Hedges road. TripAdvisor provided a VIP experience for those on the tour by having Kristian pop out from behind a door at Ballintoy Harbour, made famous as part of the Iron Islands of House Greyjoy. Kristian and the tour guide
Game of Thrones star Kristian Nairn (centre) recreates his famous scene with fans shared insider information about the show and invited everyone to pose for a photo recreating the actor’s famous “hold the door” scene. “I love my job because every day I’m able to provide a top-rate tour experience for people just as passionate about the Game of Thrones as myself,” said Caroline McComb, Tour Operator. Since its premiere in 2012, GoT has had a dramatic impact on tourism to destinations appearing on the show, with some locations recording a 2,000 per cent spike in traveller interest. Meanwhile Tourism Ireland has unveiled a 77-metre long, Bayeux-style tapestry bringing to life the trials and tribulations of the show’s characters in its most heroic and infamous scenes. FORGET SAVING for a house or investing wisely. A new study shows that 25 per cent of Aussies plan to use their upcoming tax refunds on travel. According to research by Skyscanner Australia, Australians are looking well beyond our own shores when it comes to holiday destinations. With each age-group preferring different destinations, the Australian Tax Refund Survey found Millennials (21 to 29 years old) were likely to holiday in Europe (28 per cent) and Gen Y-ers (30 to 39 years old) in Asia (41 per cent). Males seem to love the east, with nearly half (46 per cent) preferring a holiday in Asia, while women were splitting their preferences fairly evenly between Asia (24 per cent), Europe (23 per cent) and the Americas (21 per cent). According to Skyscanner some of the best value destinations to splurge your tax return on are Bali and Osaka (for a budget less than $1,000), Seoul and Paris ($1,001-$2,000), and Croatia and Las Vegas ($2,001-$2,500). ■ skyscanner.com.au

Pollies urged to give agents a break THE GOVERNMENT has been accused of ignoring the importance of the travel industry and taxing travel agents into depression. Speaking at the 10th National Travel Industry Awards (NTIA) in Sydney, Jayson Westbury, CEO of the Australian Federation of Travel Agents (AFTA), launched a stinging attack on the power brokers in Canberra. “Outbound travel in Australia is alive and well and much to the amazement of the Commonwealth Government we continue to be successful in everything we do, without much help at all from them,” he told the 1,500-strong audience at the International Conference Centre. “In fact, the Commonwealth Government continues to find ways to tax us into

depression, but we continue to stand tall, we simply say – get out of our way and allow us to thrive and continue to grow despite what you may throw at us.” Westbury said AFTA would continue to be a strong voice for travel agents, who remain a force to be reckoned with. “Travel agents aren’t going anywhere and the sooner the analysts, journalists, futurists and doomsayers cotton onto this, we could all do so much better together. There is no question that the travel agent in Australia has a strong and prosperous future for decades to come.” In other news, AFTA has just launched a new scheme to protect agents from supplier failure consumer chargebacks. Called the AFTA Insolvency Chargeback
Scheme (AICS), the mutual fund-based solution came into effect on September 1 and will be available to ATAS accredited businesses and will operate like an insurance product. “Since I came into this job nearly 10 years ago, this issue has frustrated and concerned travel agents and each time a supplier has collapsed the agent has been left holding the debt and the concern of covering the chargeback from the customer. Now AICS resolves this matter once and for all and it will come at next to no cost to the travel agent,” said Westbury. afta.com.au ■ For the full list of 2017 NTIA award winners, head to our website. traveltalkmag.com.au

Exhibitors at The Travel Industry Exhibition & Conference
WHY CUSTOMER SERVICE IS THE
PATH TO GOLD TRAVEL AGENTS wanting to earn extra revenue have been urged to spend more time improving the customer experience for their clients. Speaking at The Travel Industry Exhibition & Conference in Sydney, Anna Jones, Principal at 257 Consulting, said there was clear evidence from America that exceptional customer service drives increased revenue. Urging agents to create a ‘customercentric culture’, Ms Jones said that while product and marketing used to be crucial areas, customer experience, or CX, is the new big topic for businesses. “Creating that dynamic type of organisation can sometimes be tough,” she said. “You’ve got to dedicate resources to it, you’ve got to
dedicate funds to it and you’ve got to be able to prove a return on that investment. “But if you can improve your customer experience you do see a correlation between revenue growth.” Revealing that 62 per cent of customer purchase decisions are based on word of mouth or reviews, Ms Jones said there were three key steps to improving your CX. “First of all you have to stop the loss: figure out what the issues are, dive into them, listen to your customers, find the root cause and put a program in place to fix any issues. “Secondly, focus on the positives. Look for the compliments and reward and recognise your staff. Look for a program that can help you make an exceptional customer experience, not just one that works. “Finally, invest in new product. If your product is good you don’t need to spend as much money advertising it. You’ll get the word of mouth, you’ll get people recommending you and that is going to have the biggest impact and influence on clients purchasing your products.” In an earlier presentation, John O’Neill, Managing Director & Strategy Lead – Komosion, said that the challenge for travel businesses in an age of shallow customer loyalty was understanding, empathising with, anticipating and meeting the needs of their customers. “In the face of really intense competition from online price aggregators, travel companies have to provide unique experiences to set themselves apart and you definitely have to stand on something more than just price,” he said. “You have to ask whether you’re really giving value to your customers and an experience above the transaction and you have to work out how and where to be different and what you want to be famous for.” The duo were part of a stellar line up of 20 local and international speakers taking part in the ‘Agents of Change’ conference, which aimed to inform and inspire delegates to shift the way they think about their business in order to recognise their own value and increase their customer base. Staged in Sydney and Melbourne, The Travel Industry Exhibition & Conference is Australia’s dedicated trade event for the travel industry. Exhibitors from Croatia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Nepal, India, Uganda and Ghana joined Australian suppliers promoting their products to an expected audience of more than 1,000 trade visitors per show. ■ travelindustryexpo.com.au

Eco camp helps keep rainforest standing tall GUESTS STAYING at a new tented lodge in Cambodia will be helping to keep 18,000 hectares of land out of the hands of loggers, poachers and sand mining operations. The tract of land in Botum Sakor National Park, part of a vital elephant migration corridor, is managed by Wildlife Alliance, a Cambodia-based organisation involved in wildlife rescue and forest conservation. Money raised from visitors to the Cardamom Tented Camp on the Preak Tachan River will help sustain this conservation-friendly business. Lodge guests will be able to take guided day hikes and river trips with local rangers. While walking, they will be able to spot wildlife and learn about the mangrove and rainforest ecosystems and the challenges of keeping naturally mature forests standing in 12 | W W W . face of pressure to ‘develop’. The nature conservation concession includes diverse habitats: seaside mangroves, lowland tropical forests and triple-tiered canopy in the hills, which reach up to 335 metres. Asian elephants, dhole, clouded leopards, hog badgers, sun bears, mouse deer and pangolin all rely on the mature forest habitat around the camp. Visitors can also help by replanting indigenous trees in degraded parts of the concession, go kayaking, help rangers on patrols with their camera traps, or engage in other conservation activities. At the eco-camp, which is a three-way initiative between the Minor Group, YAANA Ventures and Wildlife Alliance, a percentage of the revenue will go directly to Wildlife Alliance. Any profits will be reinvested locally. “The tented camp sets an example for the local and national economy as a sustainable alternative to illegal logging, poaching and habitat destruction,” says Willem Niemeijer, CEO of YAANA Ventures. “The combined expertise of the stakeholders makes this a uniquely qualified project.”
The Cardamom Tented Camp opens on September 1 with nine comfortably furnished tented accommodations, each with an ensuite bathroom and a large patio area. The camp can be reached by road from Phnom Penh, while Trat airport and Koh Chang in Thailand are less than a four hour drive away. ■ CardamomTentedCamp.com

TWO MORE EXPLORERS START THEIR JOURNEY PONANT is continuing with the construction of its series of four new sister ship yachts, the PONANT EXPLORERS, with the laying of the keels of the third and fourth vessels of the series. With delivery of the first two yachts, Le Lapérouse and Le Champlain, scheduled for summer 2018, construction of the last two ships started with the laying of the keels of Le Bougainville and Le Dumontd’Urville in Norway. The former is due to enter service in March, 2019, with the latter ready in June of that year. Fitted with the latest technologies and IC (Ice Class) certified, the PONANT EXPLORERS boast cutting-edge ‘Cleanship’ equipment in compliance with the most recent environmental regulations. Combining moderate size (131 metres in length and just 92 cabins and suites), design and technology, they are built to be able to drop anchor in the most inaccessible sites, where other ships do not venture. In this way, they can offer an ever-wider range of destinations, notably in tropical and sub-tropical regions, such as Costa Rica, the Amazon, the Maldives, Papua New Guinea, the Orinoco and the Bissagos Islands. The four yachts of the PONANT EXPLORERS series will also be fitted with a world exclusive multi-sensorial underwater lounge, called Blue Eye. Located within the hull beneath the water line, it will allow passengers to see, hear and feel the underwater world. ■ ponant.com
Virtual tour becomes a SCENIC REALITY SCENIC HAVE launched their new virtual reality tour which gives cruisers the full Space-Ship experience before getting on board. Guests can now tour Scenic Diamond, which was filmed in April after extensive renovations and which exclusively cruises the waterways of Bordeaux in France. “For travellers who are new to river cruising and want to check out the various categories of suites as well as the onboard facilities, the virtual reality experience is the next best thing to being on board,” said Liz Glover, Scenic’s Acting General Manager Sales and Marketing. “Guests will be able to walk through our newly-built Royal Owner’s Suite and feel like they are taking part in Scenic Culinaire, our exclusive onboard cooking school.” Scenic Diamond was also chosen because of the recent addition of a Salt Lounge, the first ever onboard a river cruise ship (a Salt Lounge is a room handcrafted out of salt bricks Top: Scenic Culinaire and known for its therapeutic health Above: Scenic Salt Room benefits). ■ scenic.com.au/vr

Enjoy the small ship with a big heart
SMALL THINGS make a big difference, especially when you’re on board a ship. Cruising the seas is a breeze when you strike the right combination of size, comfort and know-how. Voyages to Antiquity’s ship Aegean Odyssey is small in size but large at heart. The delightfully charming ship provides an intimate cruising experience, incorporating uniquely-crafted itineraries that highlight new discoveries, past masters and hidden gems of Europe. You also have the opportunity to immerse yourself in culturally-rich regions, while embracing all the rest and relaxation you want. The Aegean Odyssey is a welcome difference from the larger mega liners on offer. As well as a more personalized experience, the ship’s size means she can navigate the inland waterways like Spain’s Guadalquivir River and is able to get closer into port in many places. Unlocking a unique combination of ocean and river cruising, this means you get best of both worlds. You’ll spend longer in each destination and in many cases you’ll spend the night in port, so there are less days at sea and more time for you to enjoy the wonders of the city before you. Voyages to Antiquity not only offer a classically elegant holiday but is also dedicated to enriching your mind. Carefully selected first class guest speakers, from historians to archaeologists, convey their knowledge of the history of these remarkable destinations and bringing their cultures to life with daily lectures on board. 22 | W W W . Cruise fares are exceptional value for money with inclusions such as shore excursions, four- or five-star hotel stays, onboard gratuities, wine, beer and soft drinks with evening meals – meaning there’s not much left to pay for once you’re on board. If you’re travelling on your own, you can rest assured that Voyages to Antiquity will provide you with a replenishing and fulfilling experience. There are low singlesupplements, dedicated single cabins and an engaging atmosphere to appeal to even the most discerning traveller. The 2018 Mediterranean cruising program has been released and for the first time ever, Aegean Odyssey will do a complete journey around Great Britain. As well as 21 new ports of call, 2018 will also see the return of Egypt in October’s itinerary which will give you a two-night hotel stay in Cairo. Iceland and Norway are also on the calendar giving cruisers a chance to see Scandinavia. A Grand Voyage package, which combines two single sailings, is also on offer and includes free return economy flights from Australia to Europe. This is but a small taste of the delights small-ship cruising offers. You can approach any cruise confident in the knowledge the journey will be one that provides the personal touch while offering a world of glorious opportunity. ■ For more information, or to request the 2018 Grand Voyage brochure, call 02 9959 1345, email info@vta.net.au or visit our website www.voyagestoantiquity.com.au

RIVER CRUISING: Review
SIMPLY
Sensational I DON’T know if you’re aware of this but apparently Australians have something of a reputation abroad. According to my extensive research, it’s a known fact among overseas destinations that Aussies love to splash their holiday cash, travel far and wide to see more than the usual tourist haunts... and don’t mind paying for some quality F&B along the way. All of which makes a river cruise through the South of France almost the perfect holiday. Of course, Australians have been coming to France for decades, drawn by the well publicised charms of Paris and, in recent years, to mark significant wartime anniversaries. The Normandy battlefields and ‘the City of Lights’ are all in the north, however, leaving the south relatively unexplored by those from Down Under. Thankfully that is changing with Evergreen running their seven-night/eightday ‘Sensations of Southern France’ itinerary from Arles to Lyon (or vice-versa) aboard Emerald Liberte. Launched in February, the 138-passenger ship is all new and sparkly, and comes complete with a pool, cinema, two dining venues, fitness area, massage room and complimentary bicycles for onshore use. This was my first experience of river cruising and I took to it like a canard to eau. Having unpacked in my modern and comfortable cabin, I was able to forget the suitcases for a week and simply enjoy this

JON UNDERWOOD breaks his river cruising duck with a journey of exploration through the South of France aboard Emerald Liberte.
Main: Chalon. Above: In olden days people who couldn’t afford glass painted images in their window spaces. This one is in Avignon floating hotel as it moved from one port to the next. There’s something glorious about waking up in a different place every day and then heading out to explore said surroundings – like several mini-holidays all rolled into one. A daily activity sheet kept everything on track with optional excursions, daily walking tours, entertainment and special events all laid out, along with the dinner menu for that evening. There were no airports to negotiate,
no taxis to order, no hire cars to pick up, no hotels to check-in to – the ship simply plonked you right in the heart of town and off you went to explore. Of course, if it wasn’t for the fact that the Saône and Rhône rivers flowed through them, places like Macon, Chalon and Tournon would probably remain off the tourist beat. These are authentic French villages, towns and cities where you’ll get a friendly and genuine welcome from locals
RIVER CRUISING: Review
Delicious desserts aboard Emerald Liberte, pictured right in Tournon. Below right: A typical French house in Arles who are delighted you stopped and had a look around – not always the case in a place like Paris. My starting point was the charming and ancient town of Arles in Provence. Julius Caesar founded the town in 46BC and the Roman influence can still be seen throughout, with an amphitheatre, theatre and baths drawing plenty of modern day visitors. Julius may be long gone but historians got extremely excited a few years ago when divers found a bust, purportedly of the famous Roman emperor, in the Rhône. It now sits in the town museum and if it is truly the great man, it is the oldest known sculpture of him in existence. While doubt may surround this particular work of art, there is no arguing the influence Arles had on Van Gogh. He spent 15 months here between 1888 and 1889 and in that time knocked out some 200 paintings (including Sunflowers), eight of which are on display in a museum dedicated to him. Admission to the exhibition is possibly the best €9 you will spend as you can almost reach out and touch such works as Entrance to a Quarry, The Weeders and Olive Orchard. Arles is also home to the gaudy yellow restaurant made famous in Van Gogh’s Cafe Terrace at Night and where, famously, he is alleged to have cut off part of his ear after a row with Gauguin. You can’t miss it because hordes of Japanese tourists pose outside for photos, somewhat irreverently holding their ear lobes! From Arles, Liberte headed to Avignon, home of the grand Palais des Papes (Pope’s Palace) and a famous, half-demolished bridge. Yet it was the memorial wall containing the names of the 422 people (some of them as young as five) sent by the German occupiers to various concentration camps during World War Two that stuck with me the most. In Tournon you’ll find Tain l'Hermitage, one of the best and most expensive wines in France. While that might be a little out of your price range, the good news is the T R A V E L T A L K S P R I N G 2 0 1 7 | 25
RIVER CRUISING: Review
The Roman Amphitheatre and portrait of Van Gogh in Arles village is also home to a chocolate factory, which smells beyond description and has a selection to suit all tastes... you can also try before you buy! Macon was quirky, with a wooden house from the 15th century that was once frequented by ladies of the night, and a former hospital with a ‘baby barrel’ built into the front wall. In olden days, ladies who gave birth but didn’t want to keep their baby would place them in the barrel on the street outside and then spin it round so the nursing staff inside could care for the poor, unwanted bub. A slightly happier birth is celebrated in Chalon, where photography was said to have originated in the 19th century. There’s a really good museum in town dedicated to the art, with lots of memorabilia, equipment and a colourful tribute to those staged Kodak moments of the 1960s, complete with dad with seemingly ubiquitous pipe, mum in her apron and two fresh-faced kids. For me, however, the pièce de résistance was our final stop in Lyon, a fantastic city which can be explored quite comfortably on foot (even in 35 degree heat). Depending on which statistics you go by, it is either the second or third largest city in France but is much less pretentious than the capital and much cleaner and safer than Marseilles. Lyon is renowned for its cuisine, with 14 Michelin-starred restaurants in the city, earning it the title of the “gastronomic capital of the world”. There are more eateries here than you can throw a chef’s hat at, all reasonably priced and delivering exceptional food that you can sit and take an age over. The French love to dine, chat and drink and all three can be accomplished to extremely satisfying degrees in this big-little city. Simply find a bouchon (traditional Lyonnaise restaurant) and tuck in, enjoying local specialities like quenelle de brochet, a pike dumpling with crawfish sauce, 26 | W W W . washed down with wines from local regions Beaujolais and Côtes du Rhône. English is widely spoken and most menus have translations so don’t worry if your French is a little rusty – you won’t end up with sheep brains instead of a BLT. Not that hunger is ever an issue on an Evergreen river cruise. On Emerald Liberte you’ll eat often and extremely well, with breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner prepared by the onboard chef and his small team, and lovingly presented by the excellent wait staff. Indeed, every night before dinner the head chef would recommend his ‘dish of the day’ and you’d be mad not to take his word for it. Think lamb of sisteron confit with lemon, chateaubriand or black bigorre pork, followed by such drool-inducing desserts as dark chocolate and chilli mousse, upside
down apple tarte or the intriguing omelette surprise. All accompanied by carefully selected wines and designed to send diners off to the evening entertainment with a smile and a slightly wobbly gait. And it’s here in the lounge that another real advantage of river cruising hits home. While Zoltan is tinkling the ivories or the crew are putting on an impromptu cabaret, you can sit and discuss the day’s adventures with the friends you have made on the journey. My wife and I met up with a couple of Aussies from Queensland (we’ll call them Harriet and Godfrey to protect their reputation) who became great friends and made the trip even more enjoyable. We were united by a love of travel, cuisine and good company. Surely there can be no better epitaph for my first river cruise than that... now all we’ve got to work out is where to go next?

MERITON SUITES LEADS THE INDUSTRY WITH MULTIMILLION DOLLAR REFURBISHMENTS

MERITON Suites, as part of its focus on being an industry leader in meeting and exceeding the expectations of hotel guests, is undertaking a multi-million dollar refurbishment of its Pitt Street property in the heart of the Sydney CBD. Matthew Thomas, Group General Manager, says the move is the latest example of Meriton Suites acting pro-actively to ensure its guests ‘get the best’. “Meriton Suites prides itself on conducting full refurbishments more often and more efficiently than its competitors,” he said. “This approach ensures that standards remain consistently high across all 17 Meriton Suites properties. This consistency is what separates us from our competitors and it also results in a high volume of return guests.” Meriton Suites Pitt Street has 178 premium suites spread across 51 floors. The revitalisation of the suites, completed at the end of August, includes a vibrant new colour scheme to reflect modern trends in terms of style and sophistication, while staying in touch with the ‘home away from home’ dynamic that resonates across the Meriton Suites brand’s portfolio. The chic, designer-inspired furniture showcases vivid hues of fresh aqua and royal purple across both the spacious living rooms and bedrooms, complemented by pure travertine stone-top coffee and bedside tables, as well as a neutral marble stone dining table. Mr Thomas says additional touches of polished rose metal gloss and satin black details in each suite are a true reflection of the first-class expectations of the global market.

“We work toward perpetually providing the utmost in quality and value by ensuring our suites are continually refreshed and refurbished before they even begin to date or deteriorate.” Also being introduced into all Meriton suites is a range of deluxe touches, including bespoke king-sized cloud mattresses, king-sized Australian-made pillows, Vittoria-branded coffee machines and complimentary coffee pods, four different infused teas, larger TVs, a range of Foxtel channels, free unlimited high-speed Wi-Fi and METIS-branded guest amenities. “Our service also has been reimagined, with the addition of porter services at each location, pre-arrival lounges at selected
IN BRIEF/// ■ THE MANTRA Group (MG) has announced plans to acquire the Australian-owned Art Series Hotel Group for approximately $52.5 million (excluding transaction costs), subject to customary completion conditions. The acquisition will see seven luxury hotels (representing more than 1,000 guest rooms and including a number of conference and event facilities, restaurants and luxury hotelstyle amenities) added to MG’s portfolio of 128 properties and more than 21,500 rooms under management across Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia and Hawaii. The seven hotels are The Cullen, The Larwill Studio, The Olsen, The Blackman and The Chen in Victoria, The Johnson in Queensland and The Watson in South Australia. mantragroup.com.au ■ THE FORMER Hilton Melbourne has reopened its doors as the Pan Pacific Melbourne, becoming the group’s second property in Australia along with Pan Pacific Perth. locations for our guests to relax when they arrive early, room service powered by Deliveroo, and even complimentary use of our ghd hair straighteners,” adds Mr Thomas. “Our guests simply get more when they stay at Meriton Suites than if they stayed elsewhere; and that’s why we are performing so well. Our brand has grown faster than any other in our market. “We are able to expand and improve because we own all our suites. Unlike franchised and managed hotels, we are the designer, builder, owner and the operator, so that makes improvements to our hotels, and the service we provide, easier and faster to roll out. “Our owner, Meriton founder Harry
Triguboff, is committed and passionate about always improving and updating our suites.” Pitt Street is the first Meriton Suites location to undergo a new generation of interior design, with two more properties Campbell Street, Sydney, and Waterloo - to be refurbished this year before the peak summer holiday season. Mr Thomas says all 27 three-bedroom suites that make up the Meriton Suites ‘Penthouse Collection’ are to undergo an ‘extravagant’ upgrading, starting with the Bondi suites. “We will introduce stunning refreshing tones of blue and crisp neutral decor for an elegant minimalist look, hence complementing the unparalleled views across the penthouse suites’ respective locations and maximising the larger living spaces found within each suite. “Each suite is being supplied with an exclusive and hand-selected range of Italian-crafted BVLGARI amenities, showcasing the pinnacle of luxury living. We intend our guests to be treated to an unparalleled level of service and luxury when staying in this exclusive range.” Meriton Suites, Australia’s largest owner of hotel rooms and among one of the country’s largest hotel operators, offers studios, one-, two- and three-bedroom suites in Sydney, Brisbane and the Gold Coast. ■ meritonsuites.com.au

PROPERTYtalk: Hotel review
Reach for the SKYE JON UNDERWOOD checks out a new five-star hotel opening in one of Australia’s boom areas. IF YOU'RE going to put a marker in the sand, you want it to be big, bold and beautiful. Parramatta in western Sydney is booming, with massive infrastructure, commercial and leisure projects planned, making this undoubtedly the major city in the west. With the huge increase in development has come an increase in population – both permanent and transient – and hotel chains have been quick to realise the potential of the area. Some 700 new rooms are expected to come online in the next three years. The Crown Group (not the casino chain) have beaten their rivals to the punch, opening SKYE Hotel Suites in Hunter Street, the first five-star property in Parramatta. The group acquired the site seven years ago, but it took them five years to get it built, largely due to the historical artefacts they uncovered in the digging process. These included a house from the 1840s, a convict

hut, wheelwright’s workshop and the cellar of the old Wheat Sheaf Hotel. SKYE Suites is described as a “vertical village” with the mixed development containing both residential units and 72 apartment-style suites. Our one-bedroom suite on the fourth floor made great use of the space available, with priority given to the important things in life, i.e. the bed, and some great touches, such as the ‘laundry in a cupboard’ and an enclosed balcony offering views of the large lap pool below. The furniture and decor had a distinct Asian feel about them, no doubt due to the Japanese designer, with plenty of wood (and even a book about wood!) and interesting objet d’art. The kitchen was stocked with all the modern appliances you need for a home away from home, with a fridge/freezer, cooker, dishwasher and fancy coffee maker.
The bathroom was small but perfectly adequate and apart from the main lounge area, there was also a smaller room that could be used as a work space, or even a second bedroom for those staying with children. Other niceties included the ability to choose the firmness of your mattress, an i-pad that let you order room service or find out information on local attractions, a stateof-the-art gymnasium, spa and sauna. There are also plans to open a rooftop bar on the 26th floor, serving cocktails and views. On-site dining takes place at Husk & Vine, which takes its inspiration from the former hotel found on the site. Here, you’ll get delicious flatbreads and pides made in a custom Beech oven, large plates of meat made for sharing and boutique wines, all served up from the large open kitchen where you can watch chef Stephen Seckold and his team at work. “Parramatta is a powerhouse for innovation and business and SKYE Hotel Suites will be a stand-out, luxury addition to Sydney’s up-and-coming west,” said Iwan Sunito, Chairman & Group Chief Executive Officer of Crown Group. “It will also set the benchmark for future SKYE Hotels Suites openings in Sydney’s CBD in 2018 and Green Square in 2019.” As a marker in the sand, it seems the only way is up for this particular vertical village. ■ skyehotels.com.au

in new safety film
CELEBRITIES INCLUDING Gordon Ramsay, Sir Ian McKellen, Rowan Atkinson and Thandie Newton make appearances in a new pre-flight safety video for British Airways. The film launches this month and has been designed to help customers absorb important safety messages, while boosting fundraising for Flying Start, the global charity partnership between BA and Comic Relief. “We’ve worked with Comic Relief since 2010 and our customers have already helped us generate £16.5million (approx. $AU27 million) for great causes. We hope the new video will enable us to exceed our goal of raising £20million (approx. $AU32 million) by 2020,” said Alex Cruz, Chairman and CEO of British Airways. Ten celebrities are seen auditioning for a coveted part in the video, while simultaneously demonstrating the safety features and procedures on the aircraft. In one scene, comedian Rowan Atkinson fumbles around his seat for loose change to place in a Flying Start envelope, which are available to customers on flights to enable them to make donations to Comic Relief. “It’s extremely important to us that customers engage with our safety video, and involving some of the nation’s most well-known personalities has given us the chance to create something fun that we hope people will watch from start to finish – and remember,” added Mr Cruz.

Melbourne ready to join global network SRILANKAN AIRLINES will be establishing its presence in Australia with daily non-stop services to Melbourne later this year. Commencing on October 30, the new services will also facilitate passengers from the Middle East and South Asia seeking onward connectivity via Colombo to/from Australia. “Our presence in Australia cements the long-standing relationship between our two countries,” said Captain Suren Ratwatte, Chief Executive Officer of SriLankan Airlines. The airline will be operating Airbus 330-200 aircraft on the route, offering its passengers modern in-flight comforts complemented with its award winning service and renowned Sri Lankan warmth and hospitality. “The addition of Melbourne signifies our strategy of optimising the airline’s network in line with our restructuring. This also means that we have connected another continent to our global route map,” added Ratwatte. ■ srilankan.com 34 | W W W . T R A V E L T A L K M A G . C O M . A U
Japanese travel boom prompts route change QANTAS WILL launch new direct seasonal flights between Sydney and Osaka’s Kansai International Airport in response to the boom in travel between Australia and Japan. From December 14 until March 24, 2018, Qantas will operate three flights per week using its upgraded two-class Airbus A330 aircraft. The new service will connect to the airline’s large domestic and trans-Tasman networks and Jetstar Japan’s extensive domestic network, providing good onward travel opportunities at both ends of the new route. The route – which will be the only direct flight between the two cities – adds to the airline’s popular Sydney-Tokyo (Haneda), Brisbane-Tokyo (Narita) and Melbourne-Tokyo (Narita) services. “Australia is a highly sought-after destination for Japanese tourists with many staying longer and spending more while they are here,” said Gareth Evans, Qantas International CEO. “For Australian travellers, this service will appeal to those looking to explore the historic Kansai region and the surrounding areas.” ■ qantas.com

The excitement machine Excite Holidays are celebrating their 15th anniversary next month. Here, JON UNDERWOOD talks to Nic Stavropoulos, Founder and Executive Director, about the secrets of their success and what the future holds. Q: How did Excite Holidays come into being? A: George Papaioannou, my co-founder and I, started in a one-bedroom apartment in 2002 and boot-strapped every last dollar into the business. We realised early on that there were some really antiquated workflows in travel. It was the age of brochure wholesalers so we landed on the scene with a dynamic offering over the web. Q: What has been the key to your success? A: The main reason is the way we constantly challenge: there’s always a better way of doing things or a better way of thinking. We are disruptors, innovators, movers and shakers. Another key is that we have our own software, we are independent and we never push anyone else’s agenda. We offer the cheapest available rates to the agent and that is at the core of our success.

endorsed, add value and provide security. Those three things are key in an agent’s workflow. Q: You’ve unveiled some exciting new technology to the market recently. A: We’ve just launched our new ‘Activities’ module. It is world-class and we are so proud of what we have been able to deliver. The user interface is phenomenal and the
information is clear. There’s also the ‘Search by Anything’ function within our site, which very few companies are offering. You are able to search by absolutely anything: by street, location, hotel. It’s all about getting the agent to the product as quickly as possible so they can be competitive. We will be redeveloping our ‘Transfer’ offering in the coming months while ‘Flexi-Com’ is all about giving back control to agents to determine their own margin for a product. ‘Excite Engage’ is our agent information portal where we create our own content and provide downloadable brochures on a destination which agents can also pass on to their clients. Our entire user interface is tailored for the agent. We have a huge point of difference in helping solve some of the problems that agents have and bringing the right product to their store, whether it be home-based or bricks-and-mortar. We are constantly supporting agents to make sure they have the tools to close the sale. Q: And you’re about to take on America? A: We officially launch Excite Holidays into America on November 30. We’ve got preferred contracts signed with a couple of groups over there which will give us an awesome springboard into that market. It’s huge for us and we’re very excited about that business. Q: What does the future of Excite Holidays look like? A: We’ve grown over the last 15 years from absolutely nothing to being an extremely serious player within the Australian market. In the next five years we will be absolutely huge. I don’t know another travel company that is growing at the rate we are. We’re making big gains and we’re here to stay. ■ exciteholidays.com

Q: Do you believe high street agents are a dying breed? A: One thing is for sure. The travel agency business has never been stronger in Australia and everybody needs to accept that this sector is not going to die. It’ll morph and change, but there will always be people out there with complex itineraries who are time poor or want advice that will need somebody to hold their hand. We’re also experiencing an age of extremely well researched consumers, who will sit down in front of an agent with their smart device and tell them what prices they can get on the internet. Girls ON TOUR Take four girls from four different decades, plonk them in Waikiki for a week and you’re bound to get some great holiday tips. JENNY ROWLAND reports back on lessons learned from seven days in paradise. IT SOUNDS like the start of a well worn joke. A Russian, a Scot and two Brits take off on a quest for fun in the sun and an escape from the Sydney winter. But after our Hawaiian Airlines flight from Sydney to Honolulu and a good six hours sleep, we were the ones laughing, arriving full of beans and with our empty suitcases ready to be filled on our flop, drop and shop. Staying slap bang in the middle of everything at the Embassy Suites by Hilton, we were pleasantly surprised by the size of our two bedroom/bathroom suite with 36 | W W W . T R A V E L T A L K M A G . two enormous king sized beds and views over the famous pink palace, aka The Royal Hawaiian, and the rolling surf of the famous Waikiki Beach. With all the entertainment, bars, restaurants and the famous Ala Moana Shopping Centre on our doorstep, there was certainly plenty to keep us busy.

Bars There are so many to choose from as Waikiki is overflowing with them, from traditional American-style sports bars, fancy cocktail bars to tropical Hawaiian beach bars. Make sure you Google ‘happy hours’ before you head out so you get the most out of your precious cocktail budget. We particularly loved RumFire at the Sheraton Waikiki, which has live music, the best beach sunsets and the most delicious pupus (Hawaiian tapas). We also recommend the Lanai bar at The Laylow hotel for imaginative cocktails, the coolest vibe and the sexiest waiters. The Royal Hawaiian beach bar is perfect for a sundowner and we loved the Kiwi Villa Maria sav blanc they had on their wine list. Kelley O’Neil’s Irish bar has live music, very strong G&T's, a floor show of slightly inebriated but very entertaining punters attempting to out-dance and out-sing each other, but more importantly for our single lady readers, this is where you go to find your ‘Maverick’ as the place is full of Air Force and military boys who are polite, respectful, and I have to say, very easy on the eye. (If the Maverick reference has you baffled, watch Top Gun or ask your mum!).
Restaurants The food scene in Hawaii has improved dramatically since my last visit five years ago. We fuelled up each morning on the legendary Embassy breakfast and alternated each evening between restaurants and the food trucks. With tax and tipping eating out is not cheap, but we also made use of the T R A V E L T A L K S P R I N G 2 0 1 7 | 37

ubiquitous ABC stores which stay open till midnight and sell great snacks and hot food. We loved the Sicilian cuisine of Taormina, right across the road from our hotel, where we all agreed the spag bol was the best we had ever tasted. We followed that with a white chocolate macadamia ice cream from the ice cream shop next door and contentment occurred. Bills (of Aussie fame) should also be on your list as much for the cool green and geranium colour scheme as its awesome coffee and corn fritters. Service and atmosphere are casual but sophisticated – just like the average Aussie! Duke’s Waikiki is right on the beach and an integral part of the Hawaiian experience. Being serenaded by scantily clad, dark skinned, beautiful people playing traditional Hawaiian music somehow makes your mahimahi taste even better. Do try the food trucks, as they’re a much cheaper but still very tasty option. A late night fish taco after too many mai tai’s tastes surprisingly good.
Shopping As previously mentioned, we arrived with just the bare essentials as we all love to shop and Hawaii is awesome for RETAIL THERAPY (it’s so good I have to put it in capitals). You’ll find great quality and great bargains. Even with the Aussie dollar trailing the U.S. dollar, 38 | W W W . T R A V E L T A L K M A G . C O M . A U
The view from Diamond Head. Picture courtesy HTA/Tor Johnson the discounts and store incentives make Hawaii a shopper’s paradise. I'm slightly ashamed to report that a few days were spent at the Ala Moana Shopping Mall. We split up as soon as we arrived and our daily step target was practically quadrupled. Of course, the great thing about travelling with your girlfriends is that when you return to your hotel, the G&T’s are poured (don't buy any duty free alcohol as the ABC stores sell booze just as cheap) and the fashion parade begins. It’s always amusing, as some friends are more honest than others with their assessment of your fashion choices. This inevitably led to a bit of ‘boomerang’ shopping whereby several items were returned, refunded or exchanged. The ‘last act’ section of Macy's was a popular hang out with great brands costing a mere 10-15 per cent of their original price. The Ross for Less stores, where the doorman relentlessly greets everyone that enters with "Welcome to Ross" in his lazy American drawl, are a magnet for bargain hunters who are prepared to rummage. Similar to T.K. Maxx but even cheaper, if you can imagine that. The Waikele Premium Outlets near the airport are also worth visiting with many famous expensive brands heavily
An oceanfront cabana at RumFire discounted. Great for Levi's, Kipling, Coach, Calvin Klein, etc. etc. Needless to say we all made the most of Hawaiian Airline's generous luggage allowance of two bags at 32kgs.
Things we loved A great sign of Hawaiian exuberance is the weekly Friday fireworks. We took a sunset cruise on the Star of Honolulu and dined on lobster and chardonnay while watching the sky above the city erupt into a sparkling blaze of light and colour. Hike to Diamond Head – go early before the heat sets in. It takes 30 minutes to get to the top and the view is worth every step. Pearl Harbor is a moving and worthwhile experience and arguably one of the most significant World War Two sites on the planet. Escape the hustle and bustle of Waikiki and take a day trip to the North Shore, visiting quaint traditional towns and great beaches. Make sure you stop off at the Dole pineapple plant and take the train tour before getting lost in the world’s largest maze. It was with heavy hearts and even heavier suitcases we hula’d out of Hawaii with plenty of great memories and laughs and concluded that Hawaii is indeed the perfect place for a girlie getaway.
HOW TO GET THERE Hawaiian Airlines now flies daily from Sydney and three times weekly from Brisbane to Honolulu. Fares from Australia include a free checked baggage allowance of 64kg per person (2 x 32 kilo bags), complimentary meals, drinks and entertainment. Now in its 88th consecutive year of service, Hawaiian is Hawaii’s biggest and longest serving airline. It also offers one‐stop services via Honolulu to 11 mainland cities in the U.S. including Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New York City (JFK), Oakland, Phoenix, Portland, Sacramento, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose and Seattle. With a new lie‐flat business class product, hugely popular expanded extra comfort seating, great schedules, renowned service and a popular homeland destination, Hawaiian Airlines is the carrier of choice for Australians heading to the islands. ■ hawaiianairlines.com.au

TAKE A TRIP TO
party town HAWAII IS renowned for its scenery, food, beaches, sunshine, multicultural experiences and unparalleled array of outdoor activities. But do some road tripping on your next visit and you’ll discover that another big – if little-heralded – element of Hawaii’s appeal is its diversity of great towns. With Honolulu on Oahu the state’s only true ‘city’, Hawaii is all about the charms of its multitude of towns. So deep is resident love of and pride in their hometowns that many celebrate their awesomeness with recurring parties showcasing where they live. The Hanapepe Town Friday Art Night keeps its namesake Kauai town’s main street restaurants, bake shops, retailers and impressive number of artisan galleries open into the evening each week for a post-sunset art stroll. Maui Fridays rotates its evening weekly main street parties through the towns of Wailuku, Lahaina, Makawao, Kihei and, on months with five Fridays, Lanai City. Kailua-Kona closes a portion of its bayside Ali’i Drive each month to accommodate the artist, merchant and food booths of its Kokua Kailua Village Stroll while the restaurants, bars and retailers of Hilo’s historic downtown grid bring in live music and evening revelry for Aloha First Friday. Meanwhile, the art galleries, boutique retailers and mod-cool eateries of Honolulu’s Chinatown and Kaimuki neighbourhoods welcome bustling after work crowds to the First Friday Downtown Art Walk and Third Fridays Kaimuki town stroll. Annual town celebrations to keep in mind when planning your next Hawaii visit include Koloa Plantation Days and the Waimea Town Celebration, both on Kauai, both celebrating their namesake towns’ agricultural histories. HAWAII
Pack some big savings on your next trip VISITORS TO Hawaii are being encouraged to ‘pack for paradise’ with a special promotion at a number of resorts across four islands. The 12 Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG) properties taking part in the scheme are offering rates from as low as $US179 (approx. $AU228) at Sheraton Kona Resort & Spa at Keauhou Bay. Travel can be booked until September 30 and rates are valid for stays until December 20 on Oahu, Maui, Kauai and Hawaii Island. In addition to savings on accommodation, SPG Resorts also offers a free download entitled ‘How to Pack for Paradise’. This is a helpful guide for those planning a vacation experience in the Islands. “Packing for paradise is relatively easy given Hawaii’s casual lifestyle and gorgeous weather year-round, but it’s always helpful to plan for the distinct features and characteristics of each island,” said David
Richard, Area Director of Sales for Marriott International. “Having the scoop from local experts on what to bring and what to leave at home can alleviate some of the guesswork so Hawaii travellers can focus on more important matters – like where to watch the sunset or which waterfall to visit first.” Each Hawaiian island offers unique experiences to explore and discover, whether it’s Oahu’s nightlife, Maui’s scenery or exploring the volcanic landscapes of Hawaii Island. These ‘Pack for Paradise’ tips
aim to help travellers prepare for an island getaway with comfort and convenience. Here is just one of the tips: Keep it light. One or two fancy pieces are great, but Hawaii is known for its casual dress code and you’ll most likely spend the majority of your time outdoors, so comfort is key. Day-to-day attire is easy – casual shirts, shorts, tank tops, dresses and a pair of jeans. If you are planning to go horseback riding, zip lining or take an ATV tour, a pair of closed-toe shoes is a must. ■ packforparadise.com

AQUA-ASTON Hospitality is leading the first state-wide sunscreen trade-in program as part of its #ForOurReef campaign. The initiative comes in the wake of growing attention, discussion and concern about the damage caused to Hawaii’s coral reefs by climate change, pollution and dangerous toxins such as sunscreen containing oxybenzone. Research has shown that more than 40 per cent of coral reefs are contaminated with oxybenzone and that one drop of the substance in a body of water equivalent to 6.5 Olympic-size swimming pools is sufficient to damage the coral. Between 8,000 and 16,000 tons of sunscreen enter the coral reef areas each year. Aqua-Aston wants to protect the ethos and history of the Aloha State and is enlisting its properties and guests to join the #ForOurReef initiative. This is a multi-tiered eco-campaign encompassing a reef-safe sunscreen trade-in program, providing guests with certified, natural, reef-safe sunblock in exchange for recycled sunscreen containing oxybenzone. Other elements include dispensers containing reef-safe sunscreen installed throughout all Aqua-Aston properties, an in-room amenity eco-kit containing #ForOurReef reef-safe sunscreen, reusable shopping bag and refillable water bottle, and activities within the local community, such as beach cleanups and panel discussions. ■ aqua-aston.com

Scottish secrets beneath the waves
It may surprise you to learn that one of the best places to snorkel is Scotland, more famous for its bagpipes, Loch Ness and haggis. Here, VisitScotland present their top 10 guide to finding shipwreck sites, rock walls and sheltered sea lochs favoured by underwater photographers. 1 Snorkel Trail,
North West Highlands Taking in nine beaches and bays along the coast of Wester Ross and Sutherland, Scotland’s first snorkel trail has something for all levels. Highlights include Tanera Mor in the Summer Isles where kelp and crevasses shelter lobsters and crabs; the headland at Gruinard Bay where seagrass shelters numerous fish and shellfish; and Achmelvich Bay, a sandy beach ideal for beginners and home to fish galore, shellfish and kelp beds. 2 Swim with the sharks, Oban
Travellers can swim with friendly basking sharks (they eat plankton, not humans) in the blue waters of the Inner Hebrides, or just watch them from a boat. Here you can also observe whales, dolphins, seals, golden eagles, puffins and other seabirds in their natural habitat – combined with a fascinating shoreline landscape of castles and ruins in Argyll. Basking Shark Scotland operates boat trips and snorkel safaris between April and October, and snorkelling trips and diving expeditions between June and August.
3 The Sound of Mull,
Scottish Highlands A haven for marine life including nudibranchs, sunstars, anemones, peacock worms and pipefish, The Sound is the site of several major wreck sites: Hispania, Shuna, Thesis, Rondo and Breda. The clear water of The Sound of Mull, with its abundant marine wildlife, is the ideal spot for snorkellers, divers and beach goers year round.

Divers favour the shoreline between Succoth and Artgarten, while the two old piers are ideal for snorkellers spotting huge schools of crustaceans near the surface.
5 Firth of Lorne, Oban
A mecca for diving enthusiasts, these unpolluted waters are home to both shallow and deep wrecks and deep drop offs, where snorkellers and divers can find diverse kelp forests, anemones, sea sponges, lobsters, eels and common seals. This area is also home to the world’s third largest whirlpool – the Corryvreckan – which can sometimes be heard on the mainland from some eight kilometres away.

On safari in the Serengeti National Park
ABERCROMBIE & KENT
Pioneers in African luxury travel AFRICA IS the home of Abercrombie & Kent. The company was founded in Nairobi in the early 1960s where, as Founder Geoffrey Kent remembers, the first safaris were conducted with little more than "a Bedford truck and my mother's sterling silver ice bucket". Ever since, A&K has forged a pioneering path on the continent, opening 11 offices there, employing the finest safari guides, establishing a mobile tented camping operation, giving back in the local communities A&K guests visit and taking travellers to Africa’s finest wildlife viewing arenas. Africa’s main allure is its wildlife, and a safari is the only way to see it. Nothing can quite match the experience of seeing wild animals in their natural habitat, be it big game or small, birds and reptiles or tiny insects. Whether first time visitor or seasoned safari goer, there is always something fascinating to see and a Maasai warriors

different ecosystem to explore. Because Africa is the hottest luxury travel destination on Earth, space is at a premium into next year and beyond so the best safari camps, guides and experiences are booking out fast. It’s recommended to plan well in advance and talk to a Travel Specialist who will make the best recommendations depending on the date of travel and the guest requirements. A&K has just released its Africa 2018 brochure, with 40 incredible journeys for independent travellers across 15 African countries. One of Abercrombie & Kent’s resident Africa experts, Patrick Clementson, has just returned from his 27th trip to Africa. His years of experience and passion for the continent have made him adept at creating bespoke safaris. He knows just what to recommend when, and where the best game is to be found and here are his Top Five African safari picks.
Top Five from A&K Africa Specialist, Patrick Clementson Great East Africa Migration The Migration is a moving target, with millions of mammals moving with the seasons between the Tanzania’s Serengeti and Kenya’s Masai Mara. Patrick reminds travellers to be flexible, to visit more than one area and to rely on A&K’s expert advice for the best camp recommendations according to migratory movements. Tanzania Under Canvas A captivating destination, Tanzania has world class game viewing, archaeological attractions, Africa’s highest mountain and deepest lake, colourful tribes and sandy beaches. It also plays host to the largest wildebeest migration on earth and an atmospheric tented camp in the Serengeti is the best way to experience it. Zimbabwe Discovery Zimbabwe is now firmly back on the radar for African travel with some of the best wildlife viewing in Africa. Consider places like Hwange National Park, Lake Kariba and Mana Pools in the Lower Zambezi and some of the best guides on the continent. Best of Zambia High concentrations of game, night drives and walking safaris, Zambia is as good as it gets. Patrick considers the South Luangwa National Park one of Southern Africa’s gems while the Lower Zambezi is not to be missed. Samburu & Mara Safari Kenya is the birthplace of safari, and of A&K, and still offers one of the best wilderness experiences available. Getting away from the crowds, Patrick suggests private conservancies where the wildlife is abundant, more game viewing activities are available and visitors are fewer in number. ■ Plan a luxury safari to Africa with the experts at Abercrombie & Kent. Why take a
safari
IN AFRICA? OF ALL the Earth's seven continents, perhaps the one wrapped in the heaviest cloak of mystique is Africa. For many of us, Africa can seem both beguiling and beckoning all at once, a vast land yet to be fully explored, which only adds to the intrigue even more. Explore a land quite unlike any other When you step off the plane in the wilds of Africa, you'll feel as though you're in another world. On a safari you can leave the stresses and strains of the hectic, modern world behind, with a change of scenery that's quite unlike anything you've seen before. The African continent has crystal clear lakes, sky-piercing mountains and sweeping savannahs. It's here that you
can really channel your inner explorer and get back to nature in one of the planet's last unspoiled landscapes. Watch wild animals in their natural environment A safari is ultimate adventure! There is nothing quite like watching animals roam their natural environment in the flesh, and in Africa, some of the most wonderful of the Earth's creatures wander undisturbed. Venture out to track some of the continent's most fascinating animals on foot, or hop on board a 4x4 and catch a glimpse of Africa’s exotic creatures, ticking off the ‘Big Five’ along the way. ■ www.benchafrica.com.au 1300 AFRICA (237 422)

TRAVELLERS URGED TO GET THEIR
DRONE ON
TRAVELLERS PLANNING a trip to Latin America can take advantage of a revolutionary new way to capture their holiday memories. Drone My Trip (DMT) is a unique new service which pairs the latest technology with some of the most exotic and unspoiled destinations in the world. Created by U.S.-based luxury tour operator VIP Journeys, DMT allows tourists to set out with their own drone photographer. “Pictures are worth a thousand words, but videos are worth so much more,” said Michael Eiseman, co-founder of VIP Journeys. “We wanted to give families the chance to enjoy their trip and not worry about getting the perfect shot – because a Drone My Trip photographer will be capturing it every step of the way in superb 4k using the latest drone technology.” From the plains of Patagonia to the colours of Rio de Janeiro, DMT replaces standard iPhones and personal cameras, offering shots ordinary travellers simply can’t get. up of a giant tortoise in the Galapagos, shooting underwater, or filming wild horses galloping through Patagonia. Visitors then return home to a professionally edited video containing all the best parts of their vacation, which is then suitable for sharing online via YouTube. The footage is delivered as a high definition clip, an average of three-to-five minutes in length with graphics and music added. “We’re the only tour company on the planet offering this service. It is utterly unique. Gone are the days of forgetting still images online, spending valuable time organising mountains of photos, slideshow viewing party doldrums and vacation interruptions,” added Mr Eiseman. “This is an ideal travel product for multigenerational families embarking on a vacation together, where there is a desire to perhaps limit screen time and hours spent with iPhone in hand.” ■ vipjourneys.com
INTREPID TRAVEL is still offering permits to see gorillas in Rwanda at a reduced price despite local authorities announcing that prices would double. As one of the few travel company’s which pre-purchases permits for its scheduled group treks in Volcanoes National Park, Intrepid’s guests will be among the last to enjoy the experience at the reduced price on scheduled group tours. The Rwanda Development Board announced in May that gorilla permits would double in price to $US1,500 (approx. $AU1,800) effective immediately in a bid to strengthen conservation efforts and contribute more to the development of communities in the area. Intrepid is still offering permits for $US750 (approx. $AU900). Intrepid offers gorilla safaris as part of eight African itineraries ranging from 16- to 64-days. Tours start from $3,757 for a 16-day overland adventure through Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda, including a close encounter with the gentle giants in their natural habitat. Jenny Gray, Intrepid’s Africa Product Manager, said that despite the cost the gorillas continued to be a drawcard for the region with sales for Rwanda tours up more than 20 per cent for 2017. “A gorilla encounter is an extraordinary experience that stays with you for life,” she said. “Although it is one of those rare bucket list moments that it’s hard to put a price on, we are in a fortunate position to be able to save our guests hundreds of dollars this year.” ■ intrepidtravel.com.au
ADVENTURE TRAVEL: Canada
The island that’s packed with
possibilities
Here, we look at what can be experienced on a self-drive holiday to Vancouver Island, British Columbia, including the best way to see the wildlife. VANCOUVER ISLAND is North America’s largest west coast island with Canada’s mildest climate. The Island supports a wealth of wineries and organic farms; it’s also a top destination for outdoor pursuits, from surfing, kayaking, whale watching, and fishing to hiking, mountain biking and skiing. Vancouver Island is also the ideal starting point for anyone interested in travelling to remote areas of British Columbia that house some of the wilderness lodges that make it possible to get up and close to the abundance of wildlife. Great Bear Lodge is reached by a short floatplane ride departing from Port
Hardy (northern tip of Vancouver Island). An alternative option is to depart from Campbell River and travel by floatplane into the Knight Inlet Lodge. During your self-drive journey, there are many highlights to cover. Victoria, BC’s provincial capital and the Island’s largest city, is a mountain-framed seaside town of Edwardian architecture, lush gardens, a scenic waterfront, some of BC’s top museums and a thriving farm-to-fork dining scene. An hour north of Victoria is the Cowichan Valley, where wineries, organic farms and artisanal food producers abound. Further north along the Island’s east coast is the Oceanside
region, where long, sandy beaches and the seaside towns of Parksville and Qualicum Beach are perfect for family vacations. Next up, the Comox Valley is a great base for skiing and mountain biking at Mount Washington Alpine Resort and for exploring the wilderness trails of Strathcona Provincial Park, while Campbell River is a legendary saltwater fishing destination. On the Island’s west coast, facing the open Pacific, the towns of Tofino and Ucluelet bracket the long, surf-tossed beaches and old-growth forests of Pacific Rim National Park Reserve. In spring, whales migrate by the thousands along the coast here, while summer brings surfers and hikers and winter is prime time for watching dramatic coastal storms. From city breaks to beach holidays, from wine tours to outdoor adventure, Vancouver Island packs a lot of possibilities between its shores. ■ hellobc.com

1 You can’t talk over New Year
2 You can get great coffee
NEW YEAR, or Nyepi as it’s known in Bali, falls during March and is a holy Day of Silence observed across the island. During this Hindu celebration, life comes to a complete standstill – no talking is allowed, no lights are turned on at night and the roads are void of all traffic bar emergency and patrol vehicles. For the local Hindu population, the aim is to head into the coming year with a contemplative and relaxed attitude. As visitors, you’re confined to your hotel for the day, however, you are free to talk and enjoy the facilities within the property as usual. Heading to Bali in early 2018? Be mindful; Nyepi falls on March 17.
Once, good coffee was a rarity in Bali but now there’s plenty of choice, particularly if you’re prowling the streets of Seminyak. The undisputed caffeine king is Revolver Espresso, found down an unassuming alleyway along Jalan Oberoi (Seminyak’s Revolver Espresso, home trendy shopping strip). Coffee here is of Bali’s best coffee arguably better than any you’ll find at home. Around the corner, Sisterfields also makes a satisfying cuppa while slightly north in Petitenget and Batu Belig, DROP., The Coffee Spot and The Moose Espresso Bar respectively are well worth visiting. Also worth noting is that Indonesia’s traditional brew, Kopi Luwak, is considered a delicacy and is one of the most expensive coffees in the world. While not to everyone’s taste, it is cultivated from partially digested coffee seeds, eaten and then pooped out by the catlike Asian palm civet. Coffee anyone?

3 Not all of Kuta is seedy It’s got a reputation for being a ‘backpacker ghetto’ – ground zero for drunk and disorderly Aussie bogans. But there’s plenty to like about Kuta, especially if you’re travelling as a family. The shopping here is still some of the best (check out Matahari, Beachwalk and Discovery Kartika) and in the heart of Kuta is Waterbom, Asia’s best waterpark, featuring tropical gardens filled with rides, food and beverage outlets and attractions for all ages. You’ll also find the best-value family accommodation here too. Take Bali Dynasty Resort, for example. Already boasting family rooms with bunk beds for kids and partitioned spaces for parental privacy, the property recently added its deluxe terrace suite. Designed to accommodate two adults and two children, each features a queen-size bed and separate trundle sofa bed. Also new is the fully renovated Den Teens’ Club, including cool graffiti-style wall murals, the latest electronic games and devices, a pool table, air hockey, table tennis, dart board and home theatre facility. Take advantage of the resort’s current early bird offer by visiting bdr.pphotels.com 4 There are only four Balinese names Spend time in Bali and you’re sure to meet a Wayan. Or a Made, Nyoman or Ketut. These are the only four official names in Balinese culture and children are given one according to the order in which they’re born. Have a fifth child? He or she will be called Wayan, just like the first (or Wayan Balik, which loosely means ‘another Wayan’). Balinese known by anything else are usually using a nickname. Sharing your name with a quarter of the population tends to become confusing! 5 Not all taxis are created equal Taxis are cheap and are literally around every corner in Bali, making them a convenient choice for getting around popular resort areas. But not all taxis are created equal. Many won’t turn on the meter, will negotiate extremely inflated rates and claim they don’t carry change for larger banknotes. It’s advisable to only accept a 62 | W W W . T R A V E L T A L K M A G . C O M . A U
ride with the Bluebird Group, distinguished by their fleet of reliable light blue cars and dark blue bluebird logo. This company is the only one using a certified meter, making the fares fairer. 6 A sarong is a must-pack item Sure, a breezy cotton sarong is the perfect accessory for throwing on post-swim, but you’ll also find this holiday essential useful if you plan on visiting one of the island’s myriad Hindu temples. Visitors are welcomed with open arms as long as their legs – both men and women – are covered with a sarong. 7. You WILL be harassed on the beach. Go with it. Lined with trendy bars, restaurants and five-star resorts, the beaches in Seminyak, Legian and Kuta are magnets for Australian holidaymakers. They’re also the hunting ground for hawkers peddling everything from sarongs to fake watches, sunglasses, local art (of dubious quality) and beaded
The new Den Teens Club and deluxe terrace suites at Bali Dynasty Resort
jewellery. If you enjoy a light-hearted barter, you won’t mind being harassed as you sip Bintangs on your beanbag. If you value your personal space and privacy we suggest avoiding eye contact, or better still, staying off the beach. 8 Hire a scooter at your own risk Hiring a scooter is a great way to get around and is as synonymous with a Bali holiday as Bintang. Scarily however, most Aussies are doing so illegally and uninsured. Your Australian driver’s license isn’t recognised in Indonesia, so for starters you need to carry an International Drivers Permit (IDP – available from all state Royal Automotive Clubs). Secondly, like your Aussie license, your IDP only allows you to ride a scooter up to 50cc. Most scooters available for hire in Bali are 100cc or above and to ride these, you need to hold a valid Australian motorcycle permit. Fail to adhere to these regulations and it’s likely your travel insurance will refuse to pay if you find yourself in a Bali bingle.

AppeTHAIsing MARK HARADA goes from Thai food lover to Thai food cook – and it only takes a trip to Chiang Mai to do it. WHEN I cook them at home, my green and red curries are indistinguishable, my Pad Thai tastes nothing like its takeaway counterpart and my papaya salad is just okay. But these are wrongs I aim to right in Chiang Mai, with the Asia Scenic Cooking Class. Thailand’s cultural capital, Chiang Mai is laden with cooking classes, with some 30 schools for tourists peppered around the city. However, unlike many food schools in the area, Asia Scenic is family-owned and operated – that is, by sisters Gay and Moon. While Moon keeps the books, Gay is the face of the operation, a bubbly character who clearly has a love of food and for sharing that passion. As well as being a very capable cook, Gay is also an art history graduate and as such is learned on more than just what’s on a plate, which helps when it comes to sharing the origin of dishes, their stories and Thai culture more broadly. Although the school has a kitchen and small garden in Chiang Mai city, we’re 66 | W W W . T R A V E L T A L K M A G . C O M . A U
heading to Asia Scenic’s main premises, located a short drive outside of the northern Thai town. On the way, we drop by the Talad Sod Mae market, where we learn about the main components to be used in this afternoon’s dishes, from fat and flat noodles to the herbs and spices like galangal and kaffir limes that make Thai dishes sing.
Asia Scenic Gay is the face of the n tio era Cooking Class op
Shopping with Gay is like hitting the markets with a friend who not only knows how to cook, but also how to get the best stuff at the best price. She tells us that sticky rice should be soaked overnight and to pick the large red chilies for red curry as the tiny ones are too hot (small green chilies though are fine for a green curry). Mid-lecture, she sorts through bags of Tom Yum ingredients that cost just five baht (19 cents)! When we arrive at the open-air school, which is set amid lush forest, we're greeted with some refreshing, ice-cold lemongrass tea – and a promise that beyond the student/teacher relationship we forge today, more importantly, we’ll be cooking up a bond of friendship. They do say the way to someone’s heart is via their stomach… First up, a quick tour of the school takes us through the property’s amazing edible gardens, which produce everything from ginger and turmeric to enormous squash and eggplant, lemongrass, rice and soybeans.
ASIA: Thailand
Wat Phra Singh Upon returning to the kitchen, plates of vegetables, garlic, palm sugar, and oyster, fish and dark soy sauces await as well as the secret to many a Thai dish: tamarind juice. Next to them, the utensil Gay says Thai women are born with: the pestle and mortar. In this half-day class (an abbreviated take on the full-day lesson), we’ll be preparing five ‘courses’, three from which we’ll have a choice of dish. Most of the dishes we prepare I recognise: Pad See Ew, hot basil stir fry (the local’s preference over a Pad Thai, Gay says), spring rolls and curry pastes, from which we make our red, green and Massaman curries.
But the local specialty in Chiang Mai is Khao Soi, a rich coconut curry noodle soup dish. Into our freshly made red curry paste we add a homemade curry powder and after heating up our woks on the gas stoves, we’re on our way to Khao Soi heaven. As the aroma of coconut milk, galangal, garlic and crushed chillies penetrates my nostrils, and that first bite alights my taste buds, I know I’ve succeeded with the dish (and certainly choice of tour). For dessert, the popular selection is the deep fried banana, which is one of Thailand’s favourite street foods – and the fried banana we create turns out to be some of the best
I’ve had. But simple ladyfinger bananas cooked in coconut milk, palm sugar and sprinkled with sesame seeds are equally good. “We cook with emotion,” Gay says proudly. And its results clearly elicit emotions – mostly joy – in its visitors. Anyone with a taste for Thai food will love this tour. So I’d say that’s pretty much everyone. & soul
YOU WON’T be able to visit most of Chiang Mai’s temples – there are literally hundreds of them. But there are a few you simply must see. Local guide, Jack, says that if you haven’t been to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, you haven’t been to Chiang Mai – and though it’s not the most exquisite temple in the city, it’s still memorable and offers views over Chiang Mai that are impossible to beat. Arrive just before dusk and you’ll likely witness the chanting Buddhist monks and feel halfway to nirvana. Elsewhere, Wat Phra Singh is considered by many the most beautiful temple in northern Thailand, while
the less elaborate but equally alluring Wat Chedi Luang is also well worth visiting. No tour of Thailand is truly complete without a Thai massage and none do it better than RarinJinda Wellness Spa Resort, where two hours of bliss will only set you back around $100. From its welcome pandan tea and guava scrub foot rub through a whole-body massage to the ginger tea, sticky rice and mango farewell, this experience is Thai service at its best. If you can handle it, get the deep massage (which at one point involves the masseurs actually standing on your back). T R A V E L T A L K S P R I N G 2 0 1 7 | 67

In my first encounter with one of these gentle giants my feelings were a mixture of excitement, awe and admiration. This was a trip of a lifetime and a treasured memory. The World Heritage-listed Ningaloo Coast is one of the few places on earth where you can swim with whale sharks – the world's largest fish. Globally, it's very rare to find these creatures so close to shore, but they visit Ningaloo every year between March and July. We chose to book with Ocean Eco Adventures as they have had a 100 per cent success rate for the last two seasons and earn rave reviews on TripAdvisor. Jimmy has an impressive 22-metre vessel with comfortable seating, a sun deck and a low marine board which meant we had the easiest and quickest possible entry and exit into the water (very important when you are chasing whale sharks). They also have their own spotter aircraft, which, coupled with their highly professional team on the boat, means they could spot whale sharks, humpbacks and many other wildlife, radio to the boat and then place us in the water so we could see the whale sharks swim past just at the right time. We were lucky enough to have 80 minutes of swimming time with three different whale sharks. Of course, there are no guarantees on how many you’ll see or how long they 68 | W W W . T R A V E L T A L K M A G . C O M . A U
will stick around as these are wild animals. However, I got the feeling Jimmy would go that extra mile to give us the very best experience possible. We also saw many Humpbacks (one was with her calf ), numerous dolphins, impressive manta rays leaping, turtles, other sharks, sea snakes, a dugong and more whale sharks lunch feeding on the surface, which I was told is rare. Put this all together with leisurely snorkelling in clear, turquoise water amid yet more colourful marine wildlife, educational tour guides, breakfast, a healthy gourmet lunch, snacks, a glass of champers or beer, excellent company and glorious sunshine
and you have a perfect day in a perfect world. Oh, and did I mention the icing on the cake? When you get home you will be sent the complimentary photos to show off to your friends – trust me, you’ll get plenty of ‘likes’. Great care is taken by the tour operators to follow the guidelines set down by the Department of Parks and Wildlife. Each one pays a licence fee to DPW which provides for further conservation and research to ensure our future generations can also enjoy these magnificent animals. This trip was a short winter break for us. Hiring a car was a must as we wanted to explore the Cape Range National Park and
ROMANCE & HONEYMOON experience the drift snorkel at Turquoise Bay, a bush walk through Mandu Mandu Gorge, a little boat trip through Yardie Creek and a last self-guided snorkel at Oyster Bay. All these bays and beaches are an easy drive from each other. Make sure you take your lunch and supplies as these are truly unspoilt, pristine beaches, with no shops or electricity. We finished our day of by taking a bottle of bubbly up to the Vlamingh Head Lighthouse to watch the sunset where you may be lucky enough to spot another whale or dolphin. We found the best place to stay for luxury, beach, views and tranquillity was the Mantarays Ningaloo Beach Resort in Exmouth. Located in the Marina Village, it’s the only four-and-ahalf star resort in the area. Just metres from Sunrise Beach on the Ningaloo Reef, it offers hotel rooms, 68 apartments and one- and two-bedroom bungalows, an award-winning restaurant, pool and gymnasium. The feel of the resort is relaxed as it has a very open layout and is built to compliment and capture its surroundings. We loved an early morning walk along the beach, a swim in the pool with views of the ocean, or sitting on the balcony in the evening with a glass of bubbly admiring the view and the peace. This place would be ideal for romantics, weddings or honeymooners and is also perfect for families with many self-contained options. As the whale shark season ends, the Humpback season begins. Between early August and the end of October you can book the Humpback swim with Ocean Eco Adventures. Flights from Perth get you to nearby Learmonth airport in just under two hours. Alternatively, you can make the two-day drive from Perth to Coral Bay or Exmouth, or join an extended guided tour. To enquire about reservations contact your nearest travel agent. Let the train take the strain
On a recent trip to France and the UK, JON UNDERWOOD got the chance to ‘rail test’ the passenger offerings on the TGV and Eurostar. WITHOUT GETTING all Sheldon Cooper on you, I like trains. Not in the anorak-wearing, Thomas the Tank Engine lunchbox-in-hand, end of the platform taking notes of engine numbers, kind of way. Just an appreciation of the transportation mode. For a start, there’s none of that ‘arrive two hours before your flight' check-in palava that you have with airports. Organise your tickets in advance - I booked, paid for and received mine before I left Australia – and you can simply rock up just before departure Top: The TGV speeds through the French countryside Right: Travel in comfort aboard the Eurostar

(although it can be a bit of a scrum getting onboard, particularly with luggage, so I’d advise leaving yourself a bit of spare time). Once onboard, you can get up, move around and really stretch your legs without having to climb over other passengers or navigate around trolleys. And unlike an aircraft, where usually the only views you get are clouds or the man in 27d discreetly picking his nose, the scenery from a train window is an ever-changing and colourful tableau. We left Lyon a couple of mins late for the two-hour TGV journey to Paris, but when
the train is capable of travelling at 320 kilometres an hour, that's easily made up. I was immediately taken with the design of the carriage, which has the seats positioned on a slightly raised platform. This gives the impression of riding high, almost as if in a stately carriage, and it was hard not to give a regal wave as we sped through the French countryside. In first class, the seats are wide and the leg space is plentiful. There's a big work/dining table that pulls down and plenty of plug in points and free Wi-Fi for those who want to work while travelling. Some of my fellow read books and magazines, some tuned into a movie on their laptop, while a couple of very excited French youngsters played hide and seek under the table. Being mid-morning, I decided it was time for coffee and cake so I headed to the buffet car. Here, I found a squad of heavily armed gendarmes relaxing and swapping tales. Recent terrorist attacks have heightened security across Europe and it was comforting to know that these guys were onboard in the unlikely event of trouble. Back in my seat, I accomplished what I had originally set out to do when deciding to take the train instead of fly. I simply watched France go by. Green and yellow meadows, wind farms, quaint villages, white cows and misty forests: they all came and went as we ripped through some incredibly pretty countryside. It’s hard to see this kind of scenery at 30,000 feet.

Above: Kids at play and passengers aboard the TGV. Right: The Eurostar at St Pancras Eurostar Travelling from Gare de Lyon to Gare du Nord to catch the Eurostar was easy, thanks to the Parisienne version of the tube. Just as well I had allowed plenty of time as the aforementioned terrorist threat meant there was a long queue to get through passport control and border security checks. My 2.13pm train eventually left an hour late, but remarkably I didn’t see any of the hundreds of passengers in the queue throw a tantrum or abuse the slightly stressed Eurostar staff. The premier class cabin was roomy and I plugged in my phone and dialled up the free Wi-Fi as we waited to leave. Here it was a bit reminiscent of a flight because there was plenty of entertainment on offer in terms of movies, games and music. We were also going to enjoy a meal service as the train made its way from Paris to London via the ‘Chunnel’. The train was busy but the layout offered some privacy and quiet for those wanting to work or sleep. The comfortable seat had
a drop down table, a mirror (presumably for lipstick application?) and a pouch for magazines. The meal came with a choice of quiche or chicken, served with wine, and was filling and tasty. A couple of minor seat adjustments and it was time for a snooze as the train flashed along at 294 kilometres an hour (it has reached a record 334.7kms/hr). I’ve been over the English Channel many times in planes and boats, but never under it, and that was quite an experience, popping out in the English countryside before ending my journey in the heart of London. All told my trip from Lyon to London took about seven hours (including the hour’s delay in Paris), which is obviously considerably more than it takes to fly. But I’d seen much more of France, saved a bit of money and had a few adventures along the way – I’m sure Sheldon would have approved. ■ railplus.com.au
The stats don’t lie YEAR TO date, Rail Plus has seen a five per cent increase in the number of Australian rail passengers in Europe, compared to the same period last year. A spokesperson for the company says the trend is no surprise. “As high-speed rail networks continue to expand and evolve across Europe, Australians are seizing the opportunities they present to enjoy a more relaxed, timely and convenient journey,” the spokesperson said. “When you can travel in comfort from city-centre to city-centre without baggage restrictions, long queues or frustrating security checks, and in most cases use the free Wi-Fi provided while on-board, why would you look at any other option?”

UK & AND EUROPE EUROPE
Why autumn could be
the perfect season IF YOU believe that the European spring and summer are the best times for a getaway in Ireland or Scotland, then it’s time to think again. The region is geographically blessed from head-to-toe with rugged terrain, emerald waters and coastal villages, encouraging travellers to visit year-round to explore its natural beauty. Peak seasons are popular, but there is something extra special about these fascinating destinations during autumn when they offer one-of-a-kind local experiences. What’s happening in ireland? Autumn is the time for Ireland to show its true floral colours, picked right from nature’s palette with hints of warm reds, vibrant
oranges and bright yellows. Listen to the sound of rustling leaves, soothing Uilleann pipes and hear the echo of a gentle flute… it’s the island’s way of saying, “Welcome to Ireland.” What’s happening in Scotland? Some places were just born to be explored again and again. Scotland is one of those places, offering rugged highlands, pristine lochs and cobbled streets. Take it up a notch and experience October’s awardwinning sound and light show, Enchanted Forest, outside of Pitlochry. It’s the perfect way to relish Scotland’s enchanting countryside.

Celebrating a half century of
summer tours
BACK-ROADS Touring has unveiled their most significant brochure offering yet, with the launch of 50 of the company’s summer 2018 tours. Travellers will be offered 11 new itineraries to choose from, including destinations like Iceland, Naples, Malta and Madeira, as well as a Dubai stopover. “The 11 new tours sit alongside some of our most popular past offerings, including the 12day ‘Italian Indulgence’ and seven-day ‘Corners of Cornwall’ experience,” said Dennis Basham, Back-Roads Touring Country Manager (Australia and New Zealand).
In addition to the new tours and expansion into new countries and regions, the brand has also introduced sailing trips through Italy and Croatia and canal cruising in France. “We take customer feedback seriously and have used this to develop new products and a brochure that we know reflects market demands,” added Mr Basham. “We have seen a trend of travellers moving towards combining a number of our tours into one trip, so the availability of both land and water based experiences expands the possibilities for Back-Roads Touring customers when travelling with us.” ■ backroadstouring.com
