The Lions Club of Mona
President’s Message My fellow Lions, Leos and Friends, it is time again to reflect on the past in order to understand and know where we are going. I would like to take this opportunity to encourage you to recommit to the cause and motto ’We Serve’ and to make new strides in making Lionism more meaningful to us and those we serve. Lions and Leos, let us inspire our prospective members in the ethics of this noble movement as we continue the service to humanity. Let us together find new, ideal ways and media to spread the message of Lionism. When a challenge arises let us garner the energy needed so that when the going gets tough, the Lions get going. Let me wish for us at Mona prosperity as we go forward with our projects for the Lionistic year. Remember we are “to aid others by giving our sympathy to the weak and our substance to the needy.” May God bless us all.
Keith Paisley Archer

Did You
Editorial Leos, my fellow Lions ,let me welcome you to this the first newsletter for this administrative year. I take this opportunity to wish you good health ,lots of energy , enthusiasm and most of all I wish that we heed our newly installed President ‘s call for recommitment to the “We Serve” motto. Let’s plan to make this year a memorable one as we salute our ‘home grown’ District Governor , Lion Izett McCalla , MJF, and his call for a “Passion for Compassion ".I In September , Senior Citizens month , we celebrate our seniors with a church service and monitoring their health status.
September is the month when we celebrate our seniors ?!
Persons in the 60+ age group form 11.35% (305,164) of the total population .
The 80+ age group increased by 34% (60,000) since 2011.
* 60% of persons over 80 are females
67% of persons over 90 are females.
The population of under 15 has declined by 26% . This decline is expected to continue and will influence the changing age structure.
Coming up in October is World Sight Day, a day created to ‘recognize and reinforce the importance of eradicating preventable blindness’. We anticipate a very busy and productive year and we wish to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of our members and pray God’s blessing on each one as we dedicate ourselves to the cause of Lionism.
District Governor’s Theme:
Consequence of above statistics
Greater risk for poverty and vulnerabilities.
Older persons have more illnesses and disabilities.
Increased frailty require special health considerations.

District Governor, Lion Izett McCalla MJF began his Lionistic career in 1991 when he was invited by Lion Winston Johnson, a co-worker of his at the time, to a Lions meeting. He attended the meeting and as the famous saying goes “the rest is history”. Lion Izett M.E. McCalla MJF was inducted in the Lions Club of St. Andrew in March 1991. He has served in many club positions and has been awarded Lion of the Year twice. He was bestowed with the Lions Clubs’ highest honour in 2000 when he was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellowship. Lion Izett chaired the operations and reorganization of the Lions Club of St. Andrew’s Dental Clinic into a viable self-sustaining project which offers low cost, high quality dental services to over 50,000 patients in Portmore and surrounding communities. International President’s Theme: Follow your dreams Lofty dreams lead to great success Lions Follow Your Dreams. They will not lead you astray!!. Nearly every great accomplishment began with as wildly ambitious dream, whether it was landing a man on the moon, running a 4minute mile or webbing together the entire world through computers. Listen to your heart. Don’t ever impede a great idea whose time has come.. To me, dreams are not visions that arise in sleep but plans that don’t let you sleep. Identify your dream and work to achieve it.. It’s up to you to decide what your dream is . Plant the seed and let it grow. Find inspiration and guidance from other clubs and from Lions Clubs International. As I say ,don’t tell me to aim for the stars when there are footprints on the moon.
Remember ! Responsibility. ! Service is more than a dream—it’s our identity. ______________________________________
