K eith G ibson, D.D.S.
Adding New Techniques & Technology to Old School Craftsmanship and Personal Care by Danielle M. Latimer & Anne Richardson
Dr. Keith Gibson is no ordinary dentist. He is known as a professional and an artisan. As a caregiver, craftsman and surgeon, Dr. Gibson has cultivated a reputation as a skilled technician, providing more “aesthetically pleasing and user-friendly” dental prostheses. His dedication to providing the highest quality of individualized patient care has compelled him to integrate cutting-edge technology into his hands-on approach to dentistry, which he has refined over his 27 years of service. By performing the entire process from start to finish - from the gathering of data, designing and creating the dentures in his own laboratory and even placing dental implants - Dr. Gibson is able to ensure that patients receive the best possible experience and outcome. Time is of the Essence This is one of Dr. Gibson’s single most important points he conveys to every patient he meets. Tooth loss is not only emotionally difficult on the patient, it also has a dramatic effect on bone structure,
Keith E. Gibson, D.D.S. 4
as it results in the bone slowly dissolving, gradually reducing the stability of the
before
after (crowns & veneers) denture and even changing the appearance of the patient’s facial structure. Implants are the only way to halt this process. In addition, their placement can greatly improve the stability and functionality of the denture. The stability of the denture is critical for day-to-day activities such as eating and speaking. "Use it or Lose it" Progressive deterioration of bone due to tooth loss requires increasingly greater effort to remedy and is irreversible without physical intervention. Bone is much like muscle in that it can decline without proper care and maintenance. Grafting procedures and implants stop bone dissolution, while sustaining existing structure. These can be a significant aid in maintaining dental and overall physical health.

Technology Leads the Pack Dr. Gibson’s use of 3D imaging has a major impact on the patient’s comfort and success. It enables him to provide a much less invasive surgical procedure, as well as a more predictable outcome. Old School Artisanship Stands Apart Hand-crafted dentures are another way that this Oklahoma City practice stands head-and-shoulders above the rest. The use of superior quality materials combined with Dr. Gibson’s attention to artistic detail, results in dentures that are more natural looking as well as comfortable. Dr. Gibson’s knowledge and expertise translates into personalized care of the highest caliber for his patients. His general practice can address a broad range of needs, including: • Basic needs - cleanings, fillings, crowns, bridges, root canals • Cosmetic needs - teeth whitening, veneers • Functional needs - dentures, partials or issues with the temporomandibular joint or “TMJ” • Surgical needs - dental implants to replace one or more missing teeth
Dr. Gibson, reviewing a patient's 3D Imaging x-ray, which gives a more comprehensive "snapshot" for diagnosis.
Along with operating a thriving dental practice, Dr. Gibson enjoys volunteering with Meals on Wheels through St. Luke’s United Methodist Church. His wife, Sarinda, is devoted to her work with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Their son, Samuel, enlisted in the United States Marine Corps just two weeks after 9/11 and has proudly served his country in Iraq. Hannah, their daughter, is a sophomore in college. Continuing education is of great importance to Dr. Gibson. He successfully performs the latest techniques to better serve each patient. Whatever your dental needs or concerns, Dr. Gibson and his friendly staff are ready to serve you.
Dr. Oz said that if you start using Dental Floss, you can add 6 years to your life, because flossing actually helps reduce heart disease!

Skilled Nursing Care & Rehabilitation Services
at Bradford Village
When my mother suffered a massive stroke, I experienced the fear everyone faces when trying to identify a facility that is safe, caring and respectful of the individuals they treat. I remembered Bradford Village when I visited a neighbor there two years earlier. I couldn’t help but notice that the staff displayed a level of clinical expertise that was rivaled only by their compassionate care. Mom received good care in the hospital, but the love and care she received at Bradford Village was unbelievable. The nurses are great and went beyond their duties to take care of anything she needed. The doctor was incredible, too! He would call me at home with reports and updates on mom’s condition. The community is clean and the security is great. You won’t be disappointed with the exceptional level of skilled nursing. I can’t say enough about how positive an experience we had. I could rest easy at night knowing Mom was in such capable hands. When all these factors come together, you know you’ve found the right place. And that’s just what you’ll find at Bradford Village. ~ Doris Shackelford

Letter from the Editor: Just like our readers, we get better with age!
The Oklahoma Senior Journal has hit another milestone as we celebrate 20 Years! That makes our magazine the longest running publication, specifically created for Oklahomans 50 years and better.
Even though I have been publisher of this magnificent magazine all these years, I am continuously learning new things about our amazing senior community and service providers. Our cover features Bradford Village, a senior living community that offers independent living cottages (pages 10-11), assisted living (pages 60-61) and even skilled nursing care (page 6) in their community, tucked away in one of Edmond's most beautiful wooded areas. And now I've learned they have just added a new Pet Park for their four-legged residents! Speaking of our furry (or feathered) friends, be sure to check out our pet section on (pages 50a through 56) which features a wealth of information and service providers who cater to seniors and their pets. Editor Robin Gunn with her staff— Frannie, Poncho and Sadie!
Also, if you want the most current information on senior events, we can help with that, too! Visit our website www.okseniorjournal.com to see announcements and event listings. We constantly update this online resource and strive to give our 50-plus community useful and relevant information. Be well! www.okseniorjournal.com (405) 816-7889 Robin R. Gunn

MIDWEST PHYSICIANS GROUP CARDIOLOGY HEART FAILURE: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW According to the American Heart Association, heart failure is a chronic, progressive condition in which the heart muscle is unable to pump enough blood through the heart to meet the body’s needs for blood and oxygen. Basically, the heart can’t keep up with its workload. At first the heart tries to make up for this by: • Enlarging. When the heart chamber enlarges, it stretches more and can contract more strongly, so it pumps more blood. • Developing more muscle mass. The increase in muscle mass occurs because the contracting cells of the heart get bigger. This lets the heart pump more strongly, at least initially. • Pumping faster. This helps to increase the heart’s output. The body also tries to compensate in other ways: • The blood vessels narrow to keep blood pressure up, trying to make up for the heart’s loss of power. • The body diverts blood away from less important tissues and organs to maintain flow to the most vital organs, the heart and brain. These temporary measures mask the problem of heart failure, but they don’t solve it. Eventually the heart and body just can’t keep up, and the person experiences the fatigue, breathing problems or other symptoms that usually prompt a trip to the doctor.
For more information about the signs and symptoms of a heart attack, visit Rajaram-Cardiology.com or call 405-732-7020 for an appointment. Two locations: 2801 Parklawn Drive, Suite 504 Midwest City, OK 73110 3700 N. Kickapoo, Suite 104 Shawnee, OK 74804

Pill Bottles!
There is an old Jewish blessing which says, “May you live to be 120.” This may actually be a realistic goal for many people one day. Healthcare for older adults is a daily news topic; however, discussions often exclude the mouth. Besides being older, Americans are keeping their teeth longer than ever before, making regular dental visits imperative. One of the reasons we are able to look forward to a longer life is the advancement of medications that allow us to function even while living with a chronic condition. It is not uncommon for an adult over the age of 50 to be taking five different medications, a number of which can affect oral health. Your dentist needs to know about all your prescription medicine plus all overthe-counter medications, vitamins, and herbal preparations. The most common drug side effect on the oral cavity is dry mouth, which is called xerostomia. Without adequate saliva we are susceptible to decay, problems chewing, bad breath, gingivitis, alterations in taste, and sometimes difficulty in speaking. If you wear a denture or partial, these appliances will not fit as well. Yeast infections are also more
likely to occur. Common drugs which cause xerostomia include antidepressants, sedatives and tranquilizers, antihistamines, and blood pressure medication. Drugs given for Parkinson’s Disease, seizures, and cancer therapy also cause dry mouth. There are many prescription medications given to act as blood-thinners, but several non-prescription and herbal medications also can alter blood clotting and must be reported. Those would include NSAIDs, such as ibuprofen or Aleve as well as aspirin and herbals such as ginger, gingko biloba, and garlic. Your dentist needs to know the type of blood pressure medicine you are on. Many will interact with dental anesthesia. In addition, several types cause unwanted changes in the gum tissue that would be difficult to diagnose without knowledge of these medications. I have only scratched the surface of how medications change your mouth. So, be safe and take your pill bottles with you when you visit your dentist!

Be a part of the new Oakcreek Communitya totally different kind of community
Dear Friends, Our neighbor fell down the stairs and broke her ankle. That was the wake-up call. With three daughters who all live in distant places, we knew it was important to plan for a future that kept us in charge and relieve our daughters of worries about aging parents. Enter Oakcreek. We learned about the new-to-Oklahoma concept of cohousing and were intrigued; it’s a totally different kind of community than we had ever known. As longtime Oklahoma residents, we knew we wanted to age-in-place with friends and with the many advantages of a small town with a major university. Oakcreek Community has 24 privately owned one- and two-bedroom homes, shared open spaces, and a 3,800 square-foot Common House for community members to use for community activities and guest accommodations. Fourteen families have already caught the cohousing concept and bought homes. Our new neighbors, single people and couples, retired and non-retired folks, range in age from 55 to 85+. At Oakcreek, age is a number, not a state of mind.
From concept...
...to reality!
We are excited about the good mix of privacy and social interaction that we experience with the group and look forward to being in a just-the-right-size home for us, without the hassles of yard and home maintenance. Hope you will visit soon at 1806 N. Husband, Stillwater, 74075. Better yet…move to Oakcreek with us! Sincerely,
Margaret and Sidney

Old preachers never die... they just keep on talking! ...Or so it seems for the Rev. Glen Howard who after 7 years in
by Rev. Glen Howard the Philippines, 10 years in Budapest Hungary and over 15 years ministry in the United States has “retired” to become host of KTOK’s Senior World Radio. "I like to talk to Seniors who are young at heart and twice as smart," Howard says.
Seniors today are living longer, have greater resources, are experiencing better health and have greater opportunities than any generation in history. Described as “the greatest generation,” Glen says it’s time for this generation to get out of the rocking chair and get back in the fight. It seems the world is going to hell in a hand basket, and unless Seniors become involved in a much greater way, the freedoms and individual liberties we have taken for granted may be in danger of slipping away. Senior World Radio began as a show to entertain and inform Seniors. Much of the focus was on promoting products and services that were available by bringing various companies on the air with an interview about their specific products and services. Whether legal, financial, health or service oriented, the sponsor would pay to promote their products and services.
Glen Howard at a Road Show,
But something happened along the way – some major using the Big Map of Israel. personalities came along like the former Director of the CIA, James Woolsey; Israeli spokesman, Avi Lipkin; author of “Barak Obama and the Enemies Within”, Trevor Loudon. Suddenly the listening audience became much larger and more interested. Even sponsors like H & H Gun Range talking about “empowering seniors” by training seniors how to use a gun and become capable of self defense were popular.
Glen Howard
The real boost to the program was what Howard calls “Road Shows”, using the Big Map of Israel – a vinyl map 15 feet wide and 30 feet long. Since the Howard’s lived in Budapest for 10 years serving as Senior Pastor of the International Church of Budapest and were involved with the International Christian Embassy Jerusalem working in support of Israel, it has been a natural to provide virtual tours of the Holy Land as Glen walks through the Land of Israel pointing out biblical sites and historical narrative of scripture. Glen says if he can’t take people to Israel, he would bring Israel to the people.

Bridging the Gap
by Anne Richardson
in the HealthCare System Improving the quality and efficiency of the healthcare system in the U.S. is one of the main focuses of policy makers today. One huge potential area for improvement is rehospitalization. These return trips by patients to hospitals cost the Medicare program an estimated 12 billion dollars each year. Readmissions may be due to poor communication of care instructions at discharge, poor patient compliance with instructions, the deterioration of a patient's condition, or medical errors — but many readmissions are preventable.
As of October 2012, hospitals and caregivers are financially penalized for rehospitalization.

WHY IS KZLS DIFFERENT THAN OTHER OLDIES STATIONS? We don't play the same 200 oldies over & over & over. We've got THOUSANDS of different songs on CD, LPs, and 45s in our oldies library, and we like to play 'em all! Sure you'll hear The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Elvis, The Four Seasons & the Motown Stuff, Otis Redding, Buddy Holly, Wilson Pickett, but you'll also hear Roy Orbison, Brenda Lee, Rick Nelson, The Everly Bros., Gary U.S. Bonds, The Ventures, plenty of one hit wonders, and even some obscure forgotten 45s...We love Rock & Roll oldies, just like you, so turn it up loud! WHO IS SCOTT SHANNON? As a broadcaster, programmer and host of the True Oldies Channel, Scott Shannon is truly an amazing success story. Honored in Billboard Magazine numerous times, Scott has been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio; The Broadcast Hall of Fame in Washington, D.C.; and the Radio Hall of Fame in Chicago, IL. Scott lists his favorite artists including Buddy Holly, Elvis Presley, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles and Eddie Cochran just to name a few. Scott also moonlights as the official voice of the Sean Hannity Show that is broadcast on over 400 stations across America. And of course, Scott brings you the greatest hits of all time on the True Oldies Channel!

Goes 'Old School' with
New Morning Show
The "Eggman"
KZLS, 99.7 FM launched its new live and local morning show, 'Eggman In The Morning.' The show will replace Scott Shannon's True Oldies format in the morning hours, but Shannon will be heard the remainder of the day via satellite. The show's host is a fixture in the Oklahoma City radio market since the 1990s, having been part of a successful and sometimes controversial morning show at a local Classic Rock station with the late Mark Shannon. More recently, Eggman hosted a local talk radio entertainment and humor program. The Oklahoma City native has also worked in Charlotte, Pittsburgh, Denver and Memphis. "We're going back to the way radio used to be," said Eggman. “Everything about the show will reflect the music we play, songs that people love but that nobody - at least not in Oklahoma City, anyway - really plays any more. There’ll be lots of listener interaction, and since we’ll program all the music here, we’ll take requests and play dedications. We’ll have lots of bits and parody songs too. It’ll be a show the whole family can listen to." General Manager Steven Johns added, "We're very excited to have Eggman join OKC's True Oldies. He brings an infectious enthusiasm that’s going to make this the most entertaining show in the Metro."
Listen to Eggman in the morning 6 a.m. until 10 a.m.

Close family ties
Right at Home is considered the pioneer in the senior care arena and is a proud leader in the in-home care industry. Carla Shepherd, Jacque Herdzina, and Dee Horne have a true pride of ownership and a passion for keeping loved ones in the place they call home. They truly understand how important it is to provide the best care for elder loved ones. Together, the sisters and owners have 31 years of combined homecare experience. In May, Joel Herdzina, son of Jacque Herdzina, joined the Edmond office in hopes of continuing the legacy. Joel Herdzina says, when asked about working with family, “It’s truly a blessing. Not only am I Joel Herdzina, Senior Vice President lucky enough to have such a great family to work with, but every day I go home knowing I’m giving back to the community of Oklahoma and helping those in need with a service that is beneficial on so many different levels. We are truly committed to meeting the needs, whether large or small, of those we serve.”

Cremation Questions?
Everyone has them, but who do you call? Most funeral homes answer your questions by giving you more options to think about and that just turns into more questions that leave you confused. by Brad Whinery
At Affordable Cremation Service, we pride ourselves in giving you the answers to every question in a straight forward and compassionate manner. That is why we have grown to be one of the largest independent cremation providers in the state of Oklahoma. Our family is in its 3rd generation and has nearly 60 years of experience in the funeral industry serving those in need. We have built our reputation on providing families what they want at an affordable price and still maintain our one price policy that covers everything you need for a simple cremation without any hidden charges or membership fees. Our pricing includes transportation of your loved one within a 50-mile radius of the metro area. If you are beyond 50 miles, we have a flat mileage rate to make it easier for any family to determine their final cost. Also included with every cremation is your choice of two different styles of permanent urns. We are the only cremation service that provides a 24-hour grief support line to help the entire family for one full year after your loss. Those are just a few of the reasons why Affordable Cremation Service is the most respected and recommended cremation service in the state, not only by the families we serve but also by hospital chaplains and hospice organizations. Our family has never measured our success based on how many families we serve, but rather on how many families we help through the difficult loss of their loved one. At Affordable Cremation Service we live up to our motto:
"Pay your last respects, not your life savings."

Art as outreach
Nathan GUNN's fresh approach to spreading the word of Christ by Anne Richardson Nathan Gunn is a local artist focusing on creating art to accomplish two goals: serve as inspiration and start conversations about Christ. Nathan's "studio" is anywhere he sets up. Sometimes in Bricktown or a park downtown, Nathan welcomes anyone to approach him and talk while he works on portraits of Christ. He sees this as an alternative to the in-yourface brash outreach efforts that often repel curious souls. Beyond his portraits, Nathan also works with stone masonry as an art form and side business.
413-0038
The masonry work is another outlet for his creativity and includes outdoor fireplaces, cobblestone pathways and pavers such as flagstone patios. When Nathan isn't creating an original work, you might find him in his other creation, "the Jesus Booth," a simple stand-up booth used to again encourage conversation and prayer in Christ without an abrasive approach to strangers. He & others use these booths nationally and internationally. You can learn more about Jesus Booth at his web site, www.jesusbooth.com.

Are you or someone you know interested in living a more active lifestyle? Do you want to make sure you are around to watch your grandkids grow up? There is a Chinese Proverb that says, “When you learn something of value you have an obligation to share it with others.” I have a passion for educating others on ways to live a healthier lifestyle. In January of ’07 I lost my mother to breast cancer. I now know that most women apply over 500 chemicals to their skin daily and many of those are toxic. We come in contact with toxins through the air we breathe, the food we eat and what we put on our skin What I have realized is that some of these toxins are unavoidable but most are by choice. I would love the opportunity to share more. Please feel free to contact me. Karrie Woods 405.612.4994 karriemwoods@gmail.com

Bonnie with her people, Brent & Trisha Clark
It was only a few years ago that Brent & Trisha Clark had never considered reading an ingredient list on a bag of dog food. Even if they had, they would not have known if it was good or bad. When their young Pug, Bonnie, began licking her paws and chewing her feet, they decided to go one simple step beyond the common practice of frequent shots at the vet. They did their homework and found there was a ton of information available; it just never occurred to them to look for it. What they ultimately discovered was that Bonnie had a severe allergy to grain. Grains like corn & wheat are in just about every brand of dog food at grocery stores and big box stores. With a little research they located a good food and in a couple of weeks all of Bonnie’s symptoms disappeared. Brent and Trisha's experience inspired them to open A1 Pet Emporium at May & Britton Road in NW OKC and will be celebrating their third year in business in February 2013 at their new larger location!
Brent & Trisha work closely with local Pet Rescues, and they have spent countless hours learning about pet nutrition. Their primary mission is to help consumers learn about good food choices for dogs and cats. None of their food brands contain any corn, wheat, by-products, or artificial colors. Some consumers have come to consider A1 Pet Emporium to be “Oklahoma’s Authority on Healthy Nutrition for Dogs and Cats”. They have an extensive selection of brands and types of foods that cannot be found at your local grocer. A1 is a specialty store, but that does not mean that they are expensive. They have high quality foods, treats and other items at very reasonable prices. They also offer a “Rewards Program” and free food samples. If your furry friend is suffering from food related allergies, or even if it's just finicky, visit A1 Pet Emporium today!

What makes a healthy lifestyle? With the Baby Boomers beginning to retire, many people are asking that very question as they ponder what their lives will be like after retirement. The residents at Tealridge Retirement Community in Edmond think they have the answers. “I am more active now,” Joe said as he talked about his life at Tealridge. “I work out, play dominoes and enjoy life.” An active, healthy lifestyle is the main focus at Tealridge. Residents can enjoy the outdoors with a fishing pond, walking trails, vegetable and flower gardens and horseshoe pit or relax on the covered patio with a group of friends. Many of the Tealridge residents also appreciate the fact that Tealridge is locally owned by Oklahoma Christian University. Our residents can attend plays, musicals, concerts, lectures, workout in the fitness center or swimming pool and even audit undergraduate classes. Another aspect of the healthy lifestyle is the friendships that are developed. Fredonna states, “I don’t have to eat by myself unless I want to.” One lady stated it this way, “If I am feeling a little down, someone is there to pick me up and encourage me. I don’t feel lonely anymore.” The residents agree that enjoying friends and a sense of community enhances their lives. Lots of entertainment without having to get outside or drive in the dark encourages the residents to be more active. One resident, who was recently widowed, stated “I like knowing that I am not by myself when the tornado sirens go off or the snow piles up. I feel safe and secure in my apartment.” Security, friendships, freedom are all part of the healthy, active, independent lifestyle at Tealridge Retirement Community. forms Law Firm Uses New Technology to Offer Basic Estate Plan for as little as $350 The marriage of 21st Century Technology with time-honored legal forms means basic estate planning no longer requires an archaic and expensive legal fee. In recent years attorney Cale R. Maddy began to employ commonly used word processing and spreadsheet programs to generate common court forms used for his business clients. He has now applied the same technology to forms long used in preparation of revocable trusts, pourover wills, power of attorney forms and advanced healthcare directives. Working with friends and couples from his church, Maddy was able to integrate his standard estate planning forms with technology he had used for business clients. The result is a comprehensive program that Maddy uses to prepare basic estate planning documents while consulting with clients. The typical consultation ranges from one to two hours and provides the Note: the service is not intended for complex estates requiring estate tax planning or complex distributions.
client with a revocable trust for assets that can be modified at any time before death and can be used to avoid costly probate procedures. With nearly 2/3 of Oklahoma counties using electronic land records, Maddy is able to find the legal description for most clients’ homes without leaving the office. The end product is a comprehensive package for either a married couple or single person including a revocable trust, pour-over wills (used in case the client acquires property later and fails to place it in the trust), power of attorney forms and healthcare directives. The package cost is $350 including applicable filing fees for quitclaim deeds (used to convey real estate into the revocable trust) and memorandums of trust. Maddy offers the service on select designated work days and to group settings.

Hearing Wellness
for the Greatest Generation
by Dr. Larry Engelmann
Communication is about staying in touch, laughing at punch-lines, hearing sermons, and talking with friends/ family. Uncorrected hearing loss results in conversations becoming embarrassing, stressful, or frustrating. Improved hearing lets you communicate with confidence, while having fun and remaining active! HEARING CORRECTION IMPROVES QUALITY OF LIFE Keys to hearing wellness are early diagnosis, proper treatment, and preventative audiologic care. Reduced hearing, “the silent hurt”, can go undetected, but not unnoticed by others. Decreased hearing deprives the ear and brain of proper sound stimulation, resulting in poor speech clarity and systematic reduction in auditory performance over time. Adults who receive proper treatment report significant improvements in their mental health, self-confidence, work and grandchildren relationships, and lead fulfilling social lives.
HEARING WELLNESS CHECKLIST
Turn TV up too loud? Ask others to repeat or accused of selective hearing?
Understand men’s voices better than women’s or children’s?
Difficulty understanding voices clearly at church, restaurants, or telephone?
Understand voices in quiet situations, but sounds mumbled in background noise?
Work around loud noise: airplanes, power tools, or guns?
Notice noises in ears like ringing, buzzing, or crickets?
Have family history of hearing loss, diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol, Alzheimer’s, cancer treatments, or dizziness? “Yes” responses indicate a hearing examination and consultation is needed.
For your appointment, call Audiology Clinic: 405-946-0364

PLEASE QUIET THE NOISE IN MY EARS Tinnitus refers to an internal noise, like a ringing, buzzing, or crickets in your ears or head, not coming from your environment. Millions have tinnitus, disrupting their concentration, sleep, and/or ability to communicate. For some, it leads to depression, stress, anger, and anxiety. Advances in technology enable Dr. Engelmann to provide treatments that result in patients commonly reporting their tinnitus “is softer” or “no longer aware of their tinnitus”. MICROCHIP MEDICAL MIRACLE Take advantage of modern medical technology. Computerized hearing aids are lightweight and provide natural sound quality. While easy to operate, they can help you understand speech clearer in background noise with automatic volume and noise reducing adjustments. Patients are often surprised and delighted when I turn on their hearing aids for the first time. They often remark, “I should have done this sooner!” - “Thank you so much for all that you’ve done for me to improve my hearing and my life.” - “Socially, these hearing aids have saved my life.” - “I am absolutely thrilled with how easy my hearing aids are to use.” DOCTOR OF AUDIOLOGY YOU CAN TRUST Dr. Engelmann is Rated “Excellent” in Patient Care and received higher satisfaction ratings than most audiologists across the nation. His excellent patient care is a proven fact.
