Letter from the Editor:
Have We Met? As Editor &
oklahoumranal n e s ior jo
tthh
Publisher of the Oklahoma Senior Journal, I don't sit behind a desk. Attending over 100 events a year and serving on several civic anniversary boards means I'm constantly out in this city. I have met ALL of the people on these pages personally (what other publications or publishers can say that?) If you are out and see me, please come introduce yourself, and I love to meet my readers, too! The OSJ was not started as a business, but as a free service to help people like my Mom taking care of her Mom (see page Publisher/Editor Robin R. Gunn 16 to hear our story). The OSJ has grown to be a resource first and a business SECOND. More than 30% of the OSJ is non-profit services, including our support groups directory (pages 48 & 49) along with articles that serve as a resource, too. This is our biggest Issue ever, 72 pages packed full of local services and information. It's come a long way in 20 YEARS and we can now boast that collectively we have over a Million in readership! My Dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer's 9 years ago and so, once again, my family is personally using the OSJ Magazine as a resource guide to help us care for him. To learn more about Alzheimer's and Dementia Care take note of our front cover featuring Belfair of Shawnee, who specialize in memory care (see pages 10, 11 & 32.) Don't miss our 10-page Pet Section titled, "It’s All About PETS and the People they Own…" which is now in its 5th Year as part of the OSJ Magazine. We also constantly update our website & Facebook to get current information to our community. Join our Facebook for giveaways! Be Well! Robin R. Gunn (405)

Playing dominoes is a favorite pass time of residents at Belfair.
A new approach to by Veronica Sibley, Regional Sales Manager
memory care
A brand new approach to memory care is what can be experienced at Belfair of Shawnee. From the beautiful environment to carefully selected team members, to the services and programming offered, Belfair of Shawnee is dedicated to the care of residents with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia. The community was created by Carland Group, an Oklahoma City based real estate developer and is managed by Seniority, Inc. The Carland Group answered the call for this prevalent need in the Shawnee area. “There were no memory support services within a 30 mile radius of the Belfair community, certainly no purpose built environments,” said Terry Carty, principal for Carland Group. Then, the team at Seniority, Inc. was employed to help realize the dream of operating a memory support residence. 10
Today, specialized therapies designed to support the dementia process are utilized to optimize the resident’s wellbeing of mind, body and spirit. An on-site licensed nurse provides care plans and caregiver oversight. The team at Belfair specializes in person-centered care for their residents. The very first interaction and one-of-a-kind positive experience for family members begins with Candace Meiler, Sales Director. She commences the process of discovering background, history, and preferences of each individual. These preferences are then communicated to the entire team to create a life enrichment program that is customized to the residents’ likes and tastes. The dining program exceeds expectations as it resembles dining in an upscale restaurant, including the Belfair “Recipe Book”, containing favorite family recipes residents enjoyed preparing.

The tastefully appointed residential setting designed with elders in mind amazes families and residents alike due to its elegance and charm. “It was very important to us to have families want to visit their loved ones so we created family friendly spaces for social gatherings,” said Richard Miller, principal for Carland Group. The community, composed of two neighborhoods, Walnut Grove and Graceland, includes private and semiprivate suites, furnished or unfurnished. The baby grand piano is a unique feature and has proven to be the center of attention for residents and families. It is specifically a preference of residents like Sonny who enjoys playing vintage country music and entertains the community daily. Life skills stations such as the ‘Nursery’ and the ‘Military’ stations, serve a dual purpose. Not only do they add to the beautiful décor, but they also create small vignettes that help residents spark old memories and reminisce. Life enrichment programming is produced around the stations to promote interest, encourage movement and interaction. A multi-sensory experience area allows for a quiet space when a resident needs to take time off from being around others in the community. A perfect place to listen to favorite music, experience aromatic scents, watch projections of water scenes and experience soft-to-the-touch items such as pillows, blankets and other plush items. Enhancing the senses simultaneously allows someone with dementia a much needed respite even if only for a few minutes, this is the beauty of a multi-sensory experience.
“My mom Margie has been at Belfair for a few months now. She is 94 and in good physical health for her age. However, her short-term memory loss requires a need for constant guidance throughout each day. I am impressed by the structure included at Belfair for each resident. I have noticed the opportunity for involvement in arts and crafts, physical exercise, music, and Sunday worship services. The nursing staff is attentive and insightful toward the needs of their residents. Extended family and friends are met with a warm and welcoming environment to visit loved ones. My mom recently spent a couple of days in the hospital and when she returned, she felt as though she was loved and missed by the staff, as well as the residents. I have peace of mind and comfort knowing she is treated with love, dignity, and respect each day.” In essence, our residents continue to create, explore and connect through the loving care provided by every team member at Belfair. Celebrating their lives is the foundation of our approach.

Eunice and Robin initially met over 15 years ago, often at community events and always with complementary information. It wasn't until a year ago that they once again connected through similar interests. They talked about the needs of the senior community and realized what they could potentially accomplish together. Combined, these two ladies have 45 years of experience dedicated to serving as a resource for seniors. Both women attend between 100-200 events a year to speak and connect with aging community members. There's no other publication or show that can say they go out to the community to share resources and collect feedback on what the current needs are. Eunice and Robin get multiple phone calls a day asking for their opinion. If they don't know the answer, they research. Recently, Steve Turner with Crossings Community Church contacted Eunice about putting together an Alzheimer’s event. Eunice worked with Crossings several years ago on a very successful event. Her goal this time was to reach every possible person that serves as a caregiver. She immediately thought of Robin to help orchestrate this monumental event. On Aug. 16, 2014, a full house of 400 attendees came to the presentation, "Don't Let the Alzheimer's Game Beat You!"*, featuring speakers from the The Broyles Foundation, Coach Broyles' daughter and granddaughter, Betsy Broyles and Molly Arnold Gay, respectively. The event benefited The Broyles Foundation and also the CareTrak program, a soon-to-be implemented program through the OKC Police Department that will find senior wanderers within minutes instead of days. Robin and Eunice also coordinated an Alzheimer’s Support Group on August 15, 2014, along with host, Touchmark at Coffee Creek, in Edmond. The impact of these events is far reaching in the lives of those who attended as well as contributions given to the beneficiaries. This is only one of many events Eunice and Robin will create to change the lives of the people in this community. They have been involved with many other events such as the Informed Senior
Seminars and Senior Awareness Day presented four times a year. Both women are board members for TRIAD with the OKC Police Dept. and Sheriff Dept. Between weekly radio shows and a print distribution of 45,000 in over 550 locations in the Metro, these ladies have got it covered! Both Eunice and Robin update and post local events and resources to their websites and Facebook pages weekly. They both have invested so much time that there is no amount of money that can buy the rewards of relationships and longevity that they have enjoyed. For businesses marketing to the 50-Plus adult community, it's clear that working with one or both of these ladies is basic common sense. Anything that needs to be promoted or presented to the 50-Plus market and their families should start with one or both of these ladies—the VOICE and the PRINT.
Eunice Khoury (THE VOICE) is the host of the radio show, "Well Preserved with Eunice Khoury" on 1000 KTOK and Robin Gunn (THE PRINT) is the Editor & Publisher of The Oklahoma Senior Journal Magazine.

TRUST
Trusts provide
you a level of protection and peace of mind... by Anne M. Richardson
As we age, we begin to think more about how our assets should be distributed after our death and how to best benefit our families. One common misconception many of us have is that a Last Will & Testament (a Will) guarantees assets are distributed according to our wishes. Attorneys Lana Cohlmia and Neelam A. Patel want you to know this is not necessarily true. In deciding how and when your estate will be distributed to your family, understanding the differences between a Will and a Trust is essential. Where a will falls short A Will cannot and does not transfer title or ownership nor does it give your heirs possession of anything. Title, ownership and possession can only be obtained through the Probate Court. Only through probate can any of your requests be accomplished. You should know even in non-contested probate matters, cost will range from $6,000-$10,000 and will take a minimum of 6-12 months to finalize. A Will does not take courts or lawyers out of the equation, ever. This means no matter what, a Will must be litigated by the courts and determined by a judge before your wishes can be enforced. Your heirs will have a lengthy and pricey process to go through and it's always questionable whether they will receive anything.
20
allows you all the freedom you now have, except no one, not even Medicare (if done in a timely manner), can take the property held by your Trust away from you. You are judgment proof. A Trust protects you and your estate from theft by those who prey on the innocent and unsuspecting. Swindlers could never trick you into signing away your home or any other property because a Trust prevents swindlers from interfering in your private affairs. A Trust also eliminates controversies that arise between remaining family members, at a time when greed and jealousy can get the better of them. A Will can lead to many problems such as loss of property at the hands of creditors or litigation expenses and struggles amongst your heirs. A Trust removes all potential problems that a Will creates. No Theft. No Delays. No Fights. No Lawyers. No Courts. No Trouble! You can continue to care for your family when you’re gone, just as you want it to be. Just as knowing the difference between estate planning choices is critical, so is having qualified attorneys create your Trust. Attorneys Neelam A. Patel and Lana Cohlmia are seasoned, knowledgeable and caring lawyers who have extensive experience in creating Trusts and an Estate Plan that meets your needs.
Also, a Will can be contested by anyone who has an interest in your estate. Anyone can view your personal and private information and words to your heirs because it is a public record. If contested, your estate will spend additional time (which means money) fighting or defending conflicts or claims.
Lana is a mother and member of a large family who are lifelong residents of Oklahoma City. She began practicing law in 1985. Besides estate planning and Trusts, Lana loves being in the courtroom. She practices trial litigation to include criminal defense, divorce and family law, personal injury, medical malpractice, insurance claims, business law, property law, employment law and wrongful termination.
What does a Trust do? A Trust allows you to continue to protect and care for your loved ones when you no longer can. It gives them immediate access to your assets and funds they need. A Trust

Neelam opened his own firm which allowed him to be more client focused and work with individuals on a one-on-one basis. While Neelam enjoys transactional work, he is also a skilled litigator ready to go to trial when necessary. He represents clients in several legal areas, including personal injury, estate planning, immigration, business law and insurance bad faith. Lana and Neelam are not partners, but are associates who both bring considerable resources to protecting your estate. The two realized in many cases, by collaborating, they could offer the most effective services and products to their clients. This collaboration has successfully saved current clients time and money while creating comprehensive Estate Plans with no loose ends. Both enjoy providing valuable guidance and peace of mind by creating Trusts that are fully prepared and funded properly. BUILDING A RELATIONSHIP Neelam and Lana build a strong relationship with each client and are very accessible. They work closely with their clients. They are the ones you will speak to when you have questions. They offer freedom and flexibility that many firms cannot. For one client, their flexibility was key in creating her Trust. Being in an assisted living facility and facing the potential of long term nursing home care, she needed protection of her hard earned assets, but her physical disabilities made travel difficult. Neelam and Lana did all the leg work and finalized the process at her facility without additional expense to her.

Associates Neelam and Lana collaborate frequently to give their clients the best outcome. If your Trust is drafted by Lana and Neelam, it will be archived and kept on file forever. Many times official documents (Wills, Estate Plans, Trusts) cannot be found when they are needed. Neelam and Lana ensure the documents are available for you and your family when needed. While Neelam and Lana have partnered on many Trusts, there are no cookie cutter solutions. Discovering each client’s specific needs and goals is key to establishing a good client relationship and a comprehensive Estate Plan. The costs of a Trust are incurred up front, not later, and cost more than a simple Will. But a Trust can save you money in many ways in the long run, and give the peace of mind that you, your family, and your assets are fully protected. Choosing to discuss your needs with Lana and Neelam will benefit you and those you love during difficult times. The two share offices in Midtown OKC and are happy to answer questions about Trusts or any of the many areas of law they practice together. For those in need of estate planning and to all readers of the Oklahoma Senior Journal, they offer a 30-minute consultation at no cost. Understanding
Alzheimer’s and Dementia Produced by The Alzheimer’s Association
Dementia is an overall term for diseases and conditions characterized by a decline in memory or other thinking skills that affects a person’s ability to perform everyday activities. Dementia is caused by damage to nerve cells in the brain, which are called neurons. As a result of the damage, neurons can no longer function normally and may die. This, in turn, can lead to changes in one’s memory, behavior and ability to think clearly. In Alzheimer’s disease, a progressive form of dementia, the damage to and death of neurons eventually impair one’s ability to carry out basic bodily functions such as walking and swallowing. When an individual has symptoms of dementia, a physician tests to identify the underlying disease or condition. Different types of dementia are associated with distinct symptom patterns and brain abnormalities. Dementia is most often divided into two categories, secondary dementia and progressive dementia. Increasing evidence from long-term observational and autopsy studies indicates many people with dementia, especially those of older age, have brain abnormalities associated with more than one type of dementia. This is called mixed dementia. Most common types of dementia • Alzheimer’s Disease • Vascular Dementia • Lewy Body Dementia • Parkinson’s Disease • Frontotemporal Lobar Alzheimer’s Disease Alzheimer’s disease was first identified more than 100 years ago, but research into symptoms, causes, risk factors and treatment has gained momentum only in the last 30 years. Although research has revealed a great deal about Alzheimer’s, much is yet to be discovered about the precise biologic changes that cause Alzheimer’s, why it progresses at different rates, and how the disease can be prevented, slowed or stopped. 32
Symptoms Alzheimer’s disease affects people in different ways. The most common initial symptom is a gradually worsening ability to remember new information. As neurons in other parts of the brain malfunction and die, individuals experience other difficulties. The following are common symptoms of Alzheimer’s: Memory loss that disrupts daily life. • Challenges in planning or solving problems. • Difficulty completing familiar tasks at home, at work or at leisure. • Confusion with time or place. • Trouble understanding visual images and spatial relationships. • Problems with words in speech or writing. • Misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace steps. • Decreased or poor judgment. • Withdrawal from work or social activities. • Changes in mood and personality, including apathy and depression. •

MYTHBUSTERS AND by Mary E. Martin, DDS
YOUR MOUTH
We have all grown up with a lot of so-called wisdom passed down through generations of loving parents. However, some of those commonly heard phrases don’t really pass the 'Truth Test'. Let’s look at the five most common.... 1. “ We all lose our teeth and get dentures when we get old.” Just as people are living longer and more fulfilled lives now, dentistry has come a long way since your grandparents’ tooth troubles. More people are retaining their teeth, quickly replacing a few lost ones, and continuing to enjoy all types and textures of food.
2. “Fluoride only works on children’s teeth.” Even though
the enamel of young teeth absorbs more fluoride than adult enamel, exposed root surfaces often seen in adult mouths are not covered with enamel and needs fluoride applied both daily and at regular dental office visits.
diseased gums
3 “Adults stop getting cavities eventually.” Actually, with
adults keeping their teeth longer today and coupled with gum recession exposing roots, there is an increase in decay in adults as they age. Several things contribute to this trend, such as, arthritic hands having less dexterity for brushing and flossing along with an increased intake of sweets.
healthy gums
4. “Crowns, bridges and dentures are permanent.” A better thought to live by would be, “Nothing is permanent.” Just as your eyes change and you need new glasses in order to see, your mouth changes as you age, lose weight and have various illnesses. Many factors contribute to the need for new restorations occasionally.
5. “I don’t need my teeth cleaned on a regular basis.” Everyone needs to see a dental
professional at least once a year. For many people, two or three exams in a year are necessary. A regular dental cleaning helps to preserve the structures surrounding your teeth (gums and bone) which provide the foundation for maintaining your teeth. This visit is also an excellent time to receive a professionally delivered fluoride treatment and a complete exam of existing restorations.

If Y ou r Physica l Ability Ch a nge s… Ada pt Y ou r Ve hicle a n d
Keep Movin’ by Mike Bradshaw, President
As a senior you have probably thought about how your home might need to be adapted if your physical ability changed. BUT…have you thought about your vehicle? We all know someone with knee or hip problems, chronic back problems, or severe arthritis. Over time, these common ailments often impact the ability to climb in and out of a vehicle or drive a vehicle safely. Perhaps you’ve even heard someone say, “I hardly go anywhere these days because it’s just too hard.” Other types of health conditions such as COPD or diabetic neuropathy can impact the ability to walk longer distances, resulting in the need to use a motorized scooter. That scooter doesn’t help much unless you can take it with you when you leave the house. For some folks a disabling condition such as a major stroke, serious injury, or progressive disease might mean full-time use of a wheelchair, power chair, or scooter. In today’s world being “confined to a wheelchair” no longer means being “house-bound” and it doesn’t mean giving up freedom and independence. As a quality-accredited mobility dealer, Mobility Auto Sales & Handi-cap Aids offers VEHICLE SOLUTIONS that allow people to stay active and independent. The most popular solutions include: • Lifts and carriers for wheelchairs and scooters
• Special vehicle seats that swivel and lift • Wheelchair accessible vans and pickup trucks • Hand controls and other driving aids. Today, people with changes in physical ability can choose from an amazing selection of innovative, safe, high-quality adaptive vehicle solutions. As a teenager in 1981, I came to Handi-cap Aids through the Edmond Memorial DECA program. Starting with a broom in my hand and eventually purchasing the company in 2002, I’ve had the privilege of working in the exciting vehicle mobility industry for 33 years. Every day we see how adapted vehicles improve quality of life. If changes in your physical ability impact the way you use (or don’t use!) your vehicle, my team and I are available to answer your questions about vehicle solutions to keep you independent and active.
Owner, Mike Bradshaw

Bonnie with her people, Brent & Trisha Clark
It was only a few years ago that Brent & Trisha Clark had never considered reading an ingredient list on a bag of dog food. Even if they had, they would not have known if it was good or bad. When their young Pug, Bonnie, began licking her paws and chewing her feet, they decided to go one simple step beyond the common practice of frequent shots at the vet. They did their homework and found there was a ton of information available; it just never occurred to them to look for it. What they ultimately discovered was that Bonnie had a severe allergy to grain. Grains like corn & wheat are in just about every brand of dog food at grocery stores and big box stores. With a little research they located a good food and in a couple of weeks all of Bonnie’s symptoms disappeared. Brent and Trisha's experience inspired them to open A1 Pet Emporium at May & Britton Road in NW OKC and will be celebrating their fifth year in business in February 2015 now with two locations!
Brent & Trisha work closely with local Pet Rescues, and they have spent countless hours learning about pet nutrition. Their primary mission is to help consumers learn about good food choices for dogs and cats. None of their food brands contain any corn, wheat, by-products or artificial colors. Some consumers have come to consider A1 Pet Emporium to be “Oklahoma’s Authority on Healthy Nutrition for Dogs and Cats”. They have an extensive selection of brands and types of foods that cannot be found at your local grocer. A1 is a specialty store, but that does not mean that they are expensive. They have high quality foods, treats and other items at very reasonable prices. They also offer a “Rewards Program” and free food samples. If your furry friend is suffering from food related allergies, or even if it's just finicky, visit A1 Pet Emporium today!

Residents Embrace Pets at
Autumn Leaves of Edmond By Mary Jacobs
Autumn Leaves resident Nancy Anders with Valir therapy dog, Troy. People living with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia may lose many of their abilities. But they don’t lose their love of pets, says Marcie Davis, Director of Sales & Marketing for Autumn Leaves of Edmond. Most residents aren’t able to care for their own pets, but family members are encouraged to bring them at any time. “Our residents just light up when pets visit,” said Davis. “Seniors with memory impairment may need to give up some of their independence and some of the activities they once enjoyed. But they do keep their ability to enjoy their pets.” One resident, Randall, is visited by his wife, Betsy, who brings the couple’s dog almost every day. Another resident, Margie, enjoys time with her dog Lonnie when her son comes for daily visits. The golden retriever takes time to greet each of the community’s residents. Twice a month, Valir Hospice’s pet therapy team brings two dogs to visit, Troy and Ted. Ted’s service at senior communities recently earned a nomination for the Oklahoma Humane Society’s Hero Award. Pets can improve quality of life for seniors. One recent study suggested that therapy animals help decrease the symptoms of aggression that affect some Alzheimer’s patients.
“Pets always put a smile on the residents’ faces,” said Jhameca Gildon, Autumn Leaves’ Life Engagement Manager. “The pets remind them of their childhood, or of pets they had earlier.” “Our pet friendly and family oriented environment is one of the features that set our memory care community apart,” said Davis. “Family members of residents can come and go any time and bring grandkids and pets. That makes the community feel like home. As firsttime visitors often say, ‘You can feel the love when you walk through the door.’”
The community also hosts a support group every third Tuesday of the AUTUMN LEAVES OF EDMO month 1001 at 6S. Bryant p.m. Avenue | Edmond, OK 73034 | ID for anyone affected by Alzheimer’s and dementia. Progressive, Innovative Therapies That Transform Lives By Jason Davis
The next evolution in progressive therapy has arrived, and you have to see it to believe it. Baptist Village Communities (BVC) opened the new, short-term, progressive rehab neighborhoods on the Baptist Village of Oklahoma City campus in July. “We are thrilled to help people recover from surgery and provide the rehab therapies and services they need to return home as quickly as possible,” declares Dr. Bill Pierce, BVC President. “People will enjoy living in this new environment designed specifically for them while they work hard on meeting the challenges of their rehab plan.” “The thought of what great benefits people will receive from the progressive therapy services that will be offered brings me a great deal of excitement,” attests Wendell Short, Vice President of Planning and Project Management. The Rehab Neighborhoods at Baptist Village of Oklahoma City contains four individual neighborhoods each with its own kitchen, dining room and living room – just like home. The physical design is also part of the service. The Neighborhoods’ unique, open layout promotes guest interaction with the employees; the “Friends Team.” Every Friends Team member

serves universally, from providing personal assistance to dining services. Meals are available anytime, also reminiscent of home. Guests get up when they want to and are greeted with a made-to-order breakfast. But perhaps the most unique feature in the new Rehab Neighborhoods is the HydroWorx® therapy pool. The therapy pool features a vertically moving floor, adjustable by remote control to varying depths of up to six feet. The vertically moving floor and removable support bars will allow our guests easy and safe access to the therapy pool. It also will contain an underwater treadmill with a video monitoring system that will provide feedback and recording capability. Therapy and resistance jets can be used for gentle to deep tissue massage. Skilled nursing also will be available. “Skilled nursing is such a vital part of the ministry at Baptist Village,” insists Michelle Billings, Director of T.B. Lackey Health Center on the Oklahoma City campus. “Our current building was adapted to offer skilled nursing services, but the new Rehab Neighborhoods is intentionally designed for the ultimate rehab experience.”
It's All About PETS and the People They Own ... ! ® 2014
Baptist Village Communities also feature pet therapy services for residents to help improve social, emotional and cognitive functions.
“Our rehab guests will still benefit from Baptist Village’s Christ-centered mission and values, but they will also experience the finest in progressive wellness and therapy technologies to build functional life skills and bring them to their ultimate goal - home.” In addition to the Rehab Neighborhoods, the Baptist Village of Oklahoma City campus is a BVC L.I.F.E. Network® community. We offer all service levels, including residential living, assistance in living, home health and personalized services, and memory support to name a few.
Baptist Village of Oklahoma City is a pet-friendly community! It is common to see residents strolling around campus with their beloved canine. It is therapeutic for many residents. Speaking of therapy, we also feature pet therapy services for residents to help improve social, emotional and cognitive functions. BVC shapes the future of aging services every day throughout Oklahoma, and the Rehab Neighborhoods will serve to enhance more lives. Let us serve you today - call the Village at (405) 721-2466.

Your Other Fa mily Doctor by Anne M. Richardson
What would you do to make your pet feel better? Most pet owners will do whatever is within their ability to bring their pet comfort and care. One innovative, new choice pet owners have is Class IV Laser Therapy. This low-level non-invasive treatment is proving to be a fantastic new pain management tool and healing therapy for pets. Laser Therapy treats conditions such as acute inflammation, chronic arthritis, joint pain, wound healing, and many more. It is an alternative to drugs and proving to be more effective than traditional treatments. Family Pet Hospital is one of the few to have this new technology, and have been using it for about a year now. The veterinary clinic and animal hospital is run by Dr. Wendy Bray, who is a licensed, experienced Edmond veterinarian. Dr. Wendy Bray can say first-hand she has seen amazing results in her pet patients. Dr. Bray and her associates, Dr. Cooper and Dr. Casey, care for many patients at the Family Pet Hospital. The business moved into their current location upon completion of construction in 2005. The facility is equipped with an on-site lab, three exams rooms and is a fully-functioning pet hospital. It is also has a surgery suite, on-site radiology, boarding lodges and

they handle all routine needs like vaccines. However, the facility is far from the clinical atmosphere of most vet offices, instead it is warm and inviting geared to make patients and their owners feel at home. The first thing you see when you walk through the door is the counter with photo tiles of patients, current and past, to greet you. Dr. Bray has practiced veterinary medicine for over 13 years and is a member of the OK Vet Med Association. In 2013, Dr. Bray was awarded the 2013 Companion Animal Practitioner of the Year Award in honor of outstanding contribution and service in veterinary medicine. If you are needing experienced care for your four-legged loved one, visit Dr. Bray and her associates. Or if you just have questions, call today. You can also visit their website to learn about Class IV Laser Therapy.

Handymen R’ Us On Track To Win
Angie’s List
Super Service Award for the Sixth Consecutive Year
Handymen R’ Us (we do almost everything) can be your one source for all your handyman and remodeling needs. We’re starting our 22nd year in business and feel blessed and thankful for all of our wonderful customers. Vic Vickers, Founder, pictured with his latest adopted girl, Penny, keeps up to date with continuing education (CE) training and has completed the courses for: • CAPS - Certified Aging in Place and • UD&B - Universal Design and Build offered by the Oklahoma State Home Builders Association of which Handymen R’ Us is a member Visit our website www.handymanokc. com to read some of our testimonial letters from some of our valued customers. One testimony tells how one lady prayed that Handymen R’ Us would be able to build a ramp (when others couldn’t) for her husband coming home the very next day and how that prayer was answered. Vic says that “people are living longer these days and want to stay in their own home as long as they can. We can adapt their homes to allow them to “AGE IN PLACE”. One of the more common remodels that Handymen does is building a rollin shower complete with bench seat. The shower floor is slightly below the Bathroom floor so that wheelchair access is easy and the individual can then transfer to the bench seat.
Vic Vickers, Founder, and Penny Handymen R’ Us can also install a stair chair lift to go from the 1st floor to the 2nd floor and for safety, you don’t have to transfer from one seat to another; you ride it all the way! The 24-inch wide door leading to a lot of bathrooms will not allow a wheelchair to pass through, so Handymen R’ Us widens the doorway so that it will.
If like Vic, you’ve adopted a pet, let him know when you call and since you’re a special person for adopting a pet, you’ll receive a discount on the work. Pet adopting “parents” are special people according to Vic and should be rewarded for their act of kindness!

HosPets
Valir Hospice Pet Therapy HosPets is Valir Hospice’s pet therapy program. This paw-warming program began in 2005 and continues to grow in popularity. Since its inception, Valir Hospice patients have received thousands of visits and tail wags from HosPets volunteers and their guardians, including trained therapy dogs and miniature horses. Well-behaved animals, of many breeds and sizes, that lend a calming presence are welcome to participate in HosPets. However, each dog must first successfully pass the Canine Good Citizen examination and the Therapy Dog International (TDI) test, which includes skills needed to interact with hospice patients such as maneuvering around walkers, staying at the bedside, and not jumping up. Additionally, the owner must also complete sixteen hours of Valir Hospice volunteer training.
Patients often benefit from pet therapy in these ways: • Experience a sense of comfort, warmth, and normalcy. • Relax and release feelings of anxiety and depression. • Focus on something other than their illness. • Respond to a living touch. • Feel motivated to complete tasks. • Perhaps most important of all, look forward to the next HosPets visit!

issues and I didn’t feel like myself. I started messing up my medications from time to time. I also started arriving late to work, which rarely happened prior to this.
Awhile ago my daughter told me I should get a Medicare Advantage plan. I had no idea what that was. I trusted her but I didn’t really feel like I needed it because I am a Veteran and I have medical and drug coverage through the VA, and that worked great for me. She explained to me it was medical coverage that I didn’t have a premium for and if I ever needed to use it instead of my VA coverage, I could. She explained that I could keep using the VA hospital but if I traveled and needed emergency care or wanted to try a local doctor outside the VA, this plan would allow me to. Because there are so many Veterans that are needing care, both on and off Medicare, we would go to the hospital and have very long wait times, and it could take several weeks to get an appointment. I thought maybe getting this plan could help the VA out a bit too. When annual enrollment came around I decided to give it a try. I received my card in the mail, and I didn’t really need it much other than using the Gym Membership that was included. At the time I worked as a shuttle driver at the airport. It had almost been a year since my plan started and that November or December I started having some memory
In February 2012, my world changed. My daughter realized that I sounded funny when we talked on the phone, and one day my grand daughter came by to check on me, she checked my blood sugar and it was over 600. She called the ambulance, and it’s good she did because within minutes I felt funny and I wasn’t speaking clear. When the ambulance got there, they thought I was having a stroke. I forgot that I had the Medicare Advantage Plan so when they asked which hospital to take me to I kept telling them the VA. The young man said, “We called them, Mr. Henson, they don’t have a bed available.”
War Veteran, Father, and Grandpa. I want to share my story with you, and hopefully it will help you.
They decided to take me to Mercy Hospital. I was concerned about the bill and wondering if VA would pay for it at a different place. It turned out that I had a brain tumor. It caused seizures and stroke-like symptoms. I was at Mercy for 24 days and I had to have brain surgery, and I ended up spending a few months in a skilled nursing home. Because of my condition they didn’t let me go back to driving so I lost my job which made me even more concerned for my finances. My daughter then fully explained that the coverage she put me on was a comprehensive plan. I had a large amount of providers I could see and we just paid copays. I asked her about the hospital bills, and she said they were just over $360,000! My world went spinning, but she told me that my plan paid all but $1,200. I couldn’t

believe it. Because I was unable to work, Mercy even waived my part because I didn’t have enough to pay the copay.
"Ginny is my insurance agent. She will be honest and help you get in the plan that works best for you. I would say I have had A-number-1 care. The coverage has extended my life quite a bit. As far as I know, I have never been denied care, I have options I never had before, and it makes me sleep better at night."
That has been almost two years ago, and I have recovered nicely. I now live by myself with my dog, Buddy. I can drive now and really enjoy life again. I go to church, do my own shopping, and visit my family. I still go to the VA Hospital from time to time. I have a primary care doctor I see in Edmond and a few specialists at Mercy. I can get in and out a lot faster there and the care is wonderful. The other great thing is I can free up some space at the VA Hospital for other Veterans. I know everyone’s situation is different and there are many options,
I think that all Veterans should have a plan like this for the “just in case” moments. I was a Marine in Korea and served my country and family and although I got very good care in the VA hospital, now I can “Have my cake and eat it, too.”
I think everyone should have the opportunity to get a plan like this because you never know when things will take a turn. Ginny is my insurance agent. She will be honest and help you get in the plan that works best for you. I would say I have had A-number-1 care. The coverage has extended my life quite a bit. What We Can Learn About Life from the
Oldest People on Earth Melissa Hill
There is no single explanation for how and why some people live much longer than others. But there is a place where more people live longer and healthier lives than anywhere else on earth: Okinawa, Japan.
Scientists studied this group of seniors to see if they could unlock some secrets to healthy longevity. The study, called The Okinawa Centenarian Study, spanned over two decades and the findings are remarkable. They imply that, with some basic lifestyle changes, we can increase our lifespans and enhance the quality of our lives. Many gerontologists believe that up to two-thirds of our lifespan is in our control. This means it’s not just genetic makeup that controls individual health. For many of us, it’s also the choices we make.
Let’s look at some of these choices. Diet
A major factor in the extraordinary health enjoyed by Okinawa elders is their distinctive diet. It is plant-based, and high in fiber, omega-3 fatty acids and flavonoids. It includes low to moderate alcohol intake, fish like wild salmon, plenty of fruits and vegetables and very little saturated fat and sodium. In addition, they follow the philosophy of ending a meal once feeling 80 percent full. In other words, eat slowly and stop early.
Exercise
Okinawan elders have lifelong routines of moderate exercise and physical activity. They walk most places they go, and keep up daily tasks such as housework, gardening and working well past the age of “retirement” in North America. Many also practice the soft martial art of Tai chi and traditional dance.
Socialization
Okinawans tend to adopt low-stress, socially rich, purposeful and spiritual lifestyles. Most practice a spirituality that combines the nature-revering aspects of Taoism, the communal respect emphasized by Confucianism, and a native belief that celebrates women as connectors between present and past and also reveres elders.
A Westernized Approach
Adopting the Okinawan lifestyle is a way of approaching aging as a rich and meaningful part of life. Each element—following a healthy diet, maintaining social ties, remaining active—supports and reinforces the others. The best lesson we can learn from the elders of Okinawa is to embrace and celebrate aging and approach it with a sense of balance and reverence. Home Care Assistance developed its exclusive Balanced Care Method™ using the lessons learned from the Okinawa Centenarian Study. Our trained caregivers encourage behaviors that enhance clients’ quality of life.
1/3 68
of our lifespan is based on genetics;
2/3
is based on controllable lifestyle factors: diet, physical activity, social ties, cognitive health, calmness and purpose.
