The North Okanagan is comprised of 6 communities including Vernon, Coldstream, Lumby, Armstrong, Spallumcheen & Enderby with a total estimated 2012 population of 83,319. The main economic drivers of the North Okanagan are agriculture, forestry & tourism. Incorporated in 1892, Vernon is the oldest community in the Okanagan Valley and the largest community in the North Okanagan. Vernon is situated 46km (29mi) north of Kelowna in the north Okanagan Valley, a 4.5 hour drive northeast of Vancouver, or a six hour drive west of Calgary, Alberta. Vernon has been dubbed “The City of Murals” for its massive and breathtaking historic murals drawn on buildings throughout the downtown core.

Greater Vernon is surrounded by three lakes; the northern tip of Okanagan Lake to the west, Kalamalka Lake, the beautiful emerald “Lake of Many Colours” to the east and Swan Lake to the north. Although sparkling lakes and beaches make Vernon a popular summer tourist destination, Silver Star Mountain Ski Resort and its Victorian inspired village, also makes Vernon a popular winter recreation destination. Silver Star Ski Resort, located just 25 km (15.5mi) northeast of Vernon covers 3065 acres blanketed annually with 700 cm/23’ of some of the world’s best powder. Nordic enthusiasts flock to Sovereign Lake Nordic Club.

A bountiful area rich in agriculture and heritage, visitors can tour historic “Old Towne” Armstrong featuring antique and specialty stores, farmers’ markets, unique dining experiences, theatre, Museum and Art Gallery. Throughout the year, visitors will find many equestrian, agricultural and 4H activities at the Armstrong Fairgrounds including the annual Interior Provincial Exhibition and Stampede, the largest agricultural fair in BC. For many thousands of years, the Okanagan Valley was the undisputed home of the Interior Salish. Early in the 19th century, fur traders used native trails along Okanagan Lake to export furs from the area to the outside world. By the 1860’s, gold discoveries had brought miners and missionaries to the valley. Settlers soon followed and land was pre-empted for ranches in Coldstream, Vernon, and Okanagan Landing. Wagon roads replaced the old pack trails, and with the arrival of a branch line of the CPR in 1892, settlers were able to reach the larger markets outside the Okanagan Valley. Improved transportation led to increased immigration and soon the large ranches were being sub divided into smaller holdings. Major irrigation schemes allowed for the intensive planting of orchards and field crops. After a major population boom location page 37 between 1907 and 1912, rumours of war curbed the influx of European capital into the Okanagan and the major land companies experienced financial collapse. Vernon had been a centre for military training exercises since 1908, and as WWI progressed, soldiers came from all parts of Canada to train at Camp Vernon. Vernon’s first airport opened on Mission Hill, and private schools welcomed students with the promise of a British education. The confidence of the 1920’s was followed by the depression of the 1930’s as the supply of orchard fruit vastly exceeded the demand. Road and rail transportation improved enough that the CPR discontinued sternwheeler passenger service on Okanagan Lake. Another war brought more troops for training at Camp Vernon, while the end of the war saw a new tide of immigration to the valley. Postwar optimism produced improvements in communication, education, transportation, and entertainment. Orchards began to disappear as

orchardists sold out to eager developers. The army camp came alive once more in 1949, this time with the arrival of cadets from across Canada. The completion of new highways to the coast and Alberta added tourism to the economic mix. New construction from the 1960’s to present day has included a civic centre, a recreation complex, several shopping malls, library, multiplex, and a performing arts centre. The city continues to thrive - a unique history, a diversified economy, a beautiful natural setting, and a balance between sports and cultural activities have all contributed to making Vernon the "Top of the Okanagan". The beginnings of the Greater Vernon Museum and Archives can be traced back to three men: Charles Haines, David Howrie Sr. and W.C. Pound. Haines, a resident of Coldstream, had trained as a cabinetmaker and taxidermist. Howrie was in the construction business and had been mayor of Vernon from 1943-1948. Pound had worked in Vernon as a taxidermist and furrier for 58 years. When Pound passed away in 1949, his mounted specimens were left to the city with the understanding that the collection would become the nucleus for a museum. Haines and Howrie then took on the task. Haines, using the Pound specimen’s along with artifacts from his own collections, contributed hundreds of hours of volunteer time to the creation of museum displays. In the meantime, Howrie handled the politics of developing the structure of the organization. The first museum was located in the back rooms of W.L. Seaton School and on June 6th, 1950, Mayor T.R.B. Adams officially opened the museum to the public. In 1967, the museum moved to its present location. From humble beginnings, the Vernon Museum now occupies over 12,000 square feet of space and attracts thousands of visitors each year. Ron Candy: Director/Curator, Vernon Museum

KALAMALKA PROVINCIAL PARK Walk along the many pathways in this unique bunchgrass landscape through open grasslands, along cliffs, & through moist cedar and fir forests. The clean attractive beaches throughout the park are great for swimming. There is even a "pet beach" for your fourlegged friends (dogs must be leashed). The park is also extremely popular for mountain biking. Interpretative signs will tell you about local flora and fauna. Access Kal Park through the Red Gate, Cosens Bay parking lot or the Jade/Juniper parking lot.

E Polson Park is located in the heart of Vernon, adjacent to Highway 97 and Highway 6. The park was established in 1908 when Samuel Polson donated a large parcel of land to the city. Located in the park is the Lawn Bowling Club, the Interior Space and Science Centre, the Arts Council and Vernon Heritage Hall. There are two ponds that support an abundance of waterfowl, a rose and Japanese garden, two tennis F courts, children’s playground and waterspray park, a running track and skateboard park.

5 6 7 GREY CANAL HISTORIC TRAIL An ambitious irrigation project in 1906 resulted in 46km (19mi) of irrigation ditches, dam flumes, pump and reservoirs of the Grey Canal, one of the most extensive systems ever built in British Columbia. It is a gently undulating trail with spectacular valley views. Today, the full length of the trail is 4.8km, ending at Glenhayes Rd. Interpretive signs offer some insight into the Grey Canal then and now. The trailhead is just off Silver Star Road on Blackcomb Way, 1.5km from BX School. Return by the same route to the parking area off Silver Star Road, but a shorter loop of 3.5km is an option. Dogs allowed between Silver Star & Rugg Rd.

BX FALLS AND CREEK A short walk along this cool and lush trail will take you back 600 million years. The Creek canyon is a melt water channel from the last ice age. This trail has a trailhead and parking at each end, it does not loop. This trail starts at the high end, the Tillicum Rd. parking lot, 2km from the junction of Silver Star Rd. The trail ends at Star Rd with an option to connect to the Grey Canal Trail. The total trail length is 2.2km with some stairs and steep sections.
