Jenny Kamoschinski, the photographer behind the

shoot, is an impressive lifestyle photographer. Her professionalism brought confidence and poise to this magical image.

T

If you’ve got the blues, pack your bags and get yourself to one of these nearby areas that are guaranteed to put the smile back on your face. If the grey sky has you pining for blue skies, you need to go no further than Big White Ski Resort, where some of the highest terrain in B.C. takes you above the clouds that often accompany winter in the Okanagan valley. Bask in the sun-dappled village and head out on the snow-capped

mountain. The resort has designed getaway programs for local skiers, boarders and non-skiers alike. For a quick getaway, join in on the perennially popular Wednesday Ladies’ Day; add a couple of nights’ accommodation and make a real trip out of it! From beginner skiers and boarders to advanced, there are lessons and activities guaranteed to create a magical winter memory. Jim Loyd, Big White’s long time Director of Sales and Marketing, suggests an itinerary starting with morning Ladies’ Day lesson and lunch, an afternoon

in the powder snow and the must-see Après Ski at the Happy Valley Day Lodge with great live music. Dinner at one of the resorts’ 13 restaurants, Snowshoe Sams for dancing and a late evening hot tub. Spend the next day on the slopes and enjoy a late afternoon spa, sleigh ride and even a catered dinner. Big White also features two Masters Weeks this winter. For the 50+ crowd, you’ll enjoy lessons, skiing and an endless list of ala carte activities. Try a crosscountry ski or snowshoeing; ice skate; go dogsledding, skating or snowmobile

touring, relax on the horsedrawn sleigh ride into the woods - where you’ll have a delicious dinner in a quaint cabin tucked amongst the trees - or even try your hand at ice-climbing. The Masters Weeks conjure up a bit of an international flavour, where guests from far-off mix with local enthusiasts. Accommodations at Big White are as varied as the terrain on the mountain. Summerland Waterfront Resort and the area around it is restful and rejuvenating, and there are less distractions. The area lends itself beautifully to walking. People hold hands a lot more when they’re here,” Jaager notes. What to do in the winter? There are some fine wineries nearby that are open yearround. Enjoy tastings at award-winning wineries such as Sumac Ridge, Dirty Laundry and, by appointment, Okanagan Crush Pad. Sample the world-class wines and treat

And be sure to drop by Cherry Tree Quilts, a huge store with some amazing and fabulous pieces. There is also Suburban Princess, who receives containers full of items from high end department stores and sells them; Sass, a quirky spot for all ages and Rock Star District, to name a few,” Jaager suggests. There are several packages available that celebrate romance, as well. MONEY MATTERS YOUR TAX TIPS from Okanagan Woman

Sarah Sabo, Chartered Professional Accountant and Certified Management Accountant of Aries Accounting, West Kelowna, talks to Okanagan Woman about what’s new when it comes to your personal 2016 tax return.

HOMEOWNERS

PARENTS

TEACHERS

Home Accessibility Tax Credit is now available for people who qualify for the Disability Tax Credit! In prior years, it was available only to individuals who were 65 or older.

A new Teacher and Early Childhood Educator School Supply Tax Credit will be in place for 2016.

You can spend up to $10,000 on a Qualifying Renovation.

A Qualifying Renovation includes any altering of an enduring nature that will allow the individual to be: more mobile, gain access, function safer, and reduce risk of harm to themselves.

You must be an Eligible Educator (teacher that holds a certificate) who spends up to $1,000 for eligible supplies that are not reimbursed to you from your employer.

Receipts will be required to be verified by your accountant, and your employer will need to certify the receipts were for teaching or enhancing learning.

A fun note – Check to see if these renovations may be combined with the Medical Tax Credit. Keep your receipts and ask your accountant if you are not sure as to what qualifies.

10 OKANAGAN WOMAN WINTER | 2016

The Income Splitting Family Tax Credit for couples with at least one child under the age of 18 will be eliminated. Not to be confused with Pension Splitting! Pension Splitting is still available in 2016. The Children’s Fitness Credit will be reduced to $500 from $1,000 for 2016 with a complete phase out in 2017. The government found that the fitness credit did not encourage any “new” participants into sports.

The Arts Credit will be reduced to $250 from $500 for 2016 with a complete phase out in 2017.

Child Care Deduction Limits have increased by $1,000. New amounts are $8,000 for children under seven, $5,000 for children seven through 15 and $11,000 if the child qualifies for the Disability Tax Credit.

STUDENTS •

Education and Textbook Tax Credits will be eliminated after 2016. The Tuition Tax Credit will remain available. Your unused tax credits carry forward to future years to help you get a bigger refund when you start earning more income!

Make sure to print off your T2202 slip from your post secondary school in order to be eligible for the Tuition Tax Credit. They do not mail these forms out.

Transit Pass Receipts are also a tax credit. Make sure to keep them.

Student Loan Interest is deductible if your loan is with BC Student Loans or National Student Loans. No write off for interest on Student Lines of Credit.

File On Time! So often people think because they are entitled to a refund that they don’t have to file on time. This is not true and can hold up other benefits you may be entitled to; such as: GST Credits.

Commissions and Tips are Taxable. You should ensure your tips/commissions are being reported on your T4 slip by your employer. If not, you are responsible for reporting these amounts on your tax return.

SAVERS •

RRSP’s and TFSA’s can be set up for monthly contributions directly from your bank account. It’s never too early to save for your future.

RRSP’s (Registered Retirement Savings Plan) help save taxes in the year of contribution and while the income earned in an RRSP is tax free, the withdrawal from the RRSP later is taxable.

TFSA’s (Tax Free Savings Account) do not decrease any taxes owing in the current year; however, income earned within the TFSA is tax free so there are no taxes when withdrawn.

Both of these savings options have tax implications and limits so should be discussed with a professional financial planner and your accountant to determine the best option for you.

VALENTINE’S

LOOKING FOR AN EXCUSE TO CUDDLE UP WITH YOUR SWEETIE AGAINST THE CHILLS OF A FEBRUARY NIGHT? WANTING TO AVOID CROWDED, OVER-PRICED RESTAURANTS AND CONGESTED PARKING LOTS? THERE ARE COUNTLESS WAYS TO CELEBRATE VALENTINE’S DAY WITH THE ONE YOU LOVE.

12 OKANAGAN WOMAN WINTER | 2016

For those yearning for a quiet, intimate occasion, the best escape may be into the snowy woods. What better way to enjoy a romantic dinner with your significant other than lost in the magical snow globe world at Putnam Creek on the backside of Silver Star Mountain, gliding through the pristine wilderness on a horse drawn sleigh ride for dinner at Wild Horseman’s Cabin or snowshoeing to a candlelit cabin on the mystical moonlit trails of Sovereign Lake Nordic Club.

PARADISE CAMP VALENTINE’S DAY SNOW CAT DINNER TOUR

Tall evergreens tower like sentinels along Silver Star Mountain’s fairy-tale gaslight era Main Street, purple, gold and silver icicles shimmering in their branches. My husband takes my mittened hand in his. This night is just for us. Through the whirl and flurry of snowflakes we hear the throaty rumble of the red Piston Bully snow cat just before it arrives in front of the ski school office. We clamber aboard with five other couples, tuck toasty blankets around our legs and huddle together in pairs in contented silence. During the ride we stare out at the white expanse intermittently illuminated by the snow cat’s headlights, familiar ski runs difficult to recognize in the dark from this unusual vantage point. Lights from other snow cats twinkle in the distance: expert groomers creating runs like velvet carpets for tomorrow’s skiers and boarders. Up ahead the glow of Paradise Camp. When the Paradise Express stops near the door we step down into the powder. We are amazed at the altered reality before us. The usually frenetic coffee and lunch spot we love to frequent between ski runs for their legendary cinnamon buns has been totally transformed into a charming lantern-lit dining room. After settling at

Enchanted by the relaxing atmosphere we decline the offer of the first snow cat ride back to the village. We plan on the second so I can linger over a glass of La Frenz Tawny dessert wine while corpulent snowflakes twirl past the window. The second snow cat ride is even cozier than the first.

WILD HORSEMAN’S CABIN

Each time I listen to the opening lines of Gordon Lightfoot’s Song for a Winter’s Night, sleigh bells jingling in time with the melodic tones of his acoustic guitar, I am transported to Silver Star Village and the sleigh ride along Bridal Path trail to Wild Horseman’s cabin. Cocooned by a blanket and snuggling with your sweetheart you can breathe in the clean mountain air revelling in this timeless Canadian tradition. When you step down from the sleigh, don’t forget to look up before entering the rustic candle-lit cabin. Away from city lights and well into the woods from Silver Star Village showy stars boast off their true glory in the dark night sky.

The lamp is burning low upon my tabletop The snow is softly fallin’.

ESCAPADES our table we order from the impressive wine list, then wander, glass in hand, checking out historic photos and ski memorabilia illustrating the fascinating history of Silver Star since its humble beginnings in 1958. Back at our table for two, from the four choices for each course, I decide on the Woodland Mushroom Tart for a starter and Buffalo Short Ribs for the main course. My husband, always more health conscious than I, gravitates toward the Paradise Camp Salad and Rainbow Trout. Our mouths water in anticipation of today’s Chef’s selection of homemade desserts.

Step into the newly spruced up environment, past the cherry red kitchen, into the rustic dining area where you can warm up with hot chocolate and fresh baked goods. Chef Mike Sonier of Christina Lake’s high end Knotweed Restaurant and Catering will be livening up the sumptuous buffet this year with locally sourced ingredients.

You might get the chance to close the evening serenading your honey on the sleepy sleigh ride back to the village with Lightfoot’s final words.

BLACK PRINCE CABIN SNOWSHOE TOUR AND DINNER

For those who prefer a bit of adventure and exercise with their Valentine celebration Sovereign Lake Nordic Club has the perfect ticket. Nothing works up an appetite like a 45-minute moonlit snowshoe over an easy rolling trail from the Sovereign Lake Nordic Club lodge along the silent trails of Silver Star Provincial Park to Black Prince Cabin. Built by British Columbia Parks in 1988 this cozy cabin is a favorite lunch stop for cross country skiers and snowshoeing enthusiasts. By day, half the fun is feeding the Canada or Grey Jays, also known as Whiskey Jacks, when they swoop in to eat right out of your hand. By night, in honour of Valentine’s dinner the cabin is lovingly converted into an enchanting cottage warmed by woodstove and glowing candles. This well-priced excursion includes snowshoe rental, a guide, trail fee and a three-course dinner catered by Silver Star’s 1609 Restaurant but has space for 22 guests only. A popular evening with club members and guests, it promises to be a sell out. Book early.

HeartTruth THE

CAMPAIGN

Hundreds of guests slipped into their fanciest dinner attire and headed to Kelowna’s fifth annual Red Dress gala. It was a sea of red at the Manteo Beach Resort this past October and it was all in the name of raising money for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Heart disease used to be considered “a man’s disease”, but that has changed now, as men and women are both equally being diagnosed in Canada. The beloved gala is a way to dress up in the brightest of reds, while reminding women of ways to reduce their risk of heart disease and stroke. During the 2016 gala, 154 guests were treated to songs by Alexandra Babbel of Opera Kelowna, wine by The View, a silent auction and an energetic and beautiful fashion show. Well-known Kelowna residents strutted their stuff on the runway, including Ryan Donn, a councillor with the City of Kelowna. The models held up plaques during the show sharing who they were walking for. Of the nineteen models, four were survivors of heart disease themselves. While the gala had an important message behind it, the laughs echoed throughout the room. Guests were seen laughing, sipping wine, snapping pictures and mingling with one another.

LEANNE MATTAR struts her stuff on the runway after speaking about her mother Tina, who was the survivor speaker for 2016 16 OKANAGAN WOMAN WINTER | 2016

The best part of the evening, other than seeing what everyone was wearing (Kelowna sure is fashionable), was that more than $30,000 was raised for the Heart Truth Campaign. Wendy Wright, Big Bike & Special Events Coordinator Heart and Stroke Foundation Okanagan/ Kootenay, says the gala hit the goal this year and they’re still counting donations!

There’s a new option in the Okanagan when it comes to wellness and anti-aging medicine and it’s called W180MD. The local medi-spa takes a well-being approach to regenerative and preventative anti-aging medicine. Best of all, it’s located in our own backyard: Lake Country. Dr. Wes and his wife, Lauren, wanted to open W180MD because they both dreamed of offering hormone replacement therapy and stem cell therapy in the interior of B.C. Lake Country was the ideal location because it offered a very private environment for their clinic. “Our clinic is actually located in a residential area of Lake Country. It is away from the hustle and bustle - with full access to a quiet outdoor pool, a beautiful view of the mountains, lake and forest,” Dr. Wes explains. Even though the grand opening for W180MD is planned for early 2017, patients have already started flooding in, eager to receive an array of different treatments. The treatment that W180MD sees the most drastic life-changing results is hormone replacement therapy. As women and men age, their hormone levels begin to drop. This causes menopausal symptoms, demised libido, fatigue, excess and abdominal fat, bone loss, muscle atrophy and increase skin laxity. Hormone therapy works to arrest the aging process and manage these symptoms. Cosmetic treatments and skin care products

BY SHANNON LINDEN

HOW ONE YOUNG WOMAN’S SHIFT IN SELF-PERCEPTION BROUGHT ABOUT THE BIGGEST CHANGE OF HER LIFE

MODEL Behaviour When Penticton-born model, Veronika Lynn, suggests we meet at Bliss Bakery in Peachland, the irony is not lost on me: a model willing to be interviewed in a den of delectable temptation? A cold, drizzly rain doggedly christens the autumn day when I pull up and rush from my car and into the shop’s warmth and richly scented welcome. It’s a full house on this bustling Saturday – Thanksgiving weekend – and I must exercise my strongest willpower not to give in to the array of deliciously designed baked goods calling from the glass case. If we mortal women struggle to sustain our svelte selves, how on earth can this goddess keep her heavenly figure?

“Coffee. Black,” Lynn says, when I ask her what she’s drinking. Ah, yes. “Herbal tea for me,” I say, having consumed my caffeine quota hours earlier. As we settle into a cozy corner, more than Lynn’s lovely visage strikes me. There is a comfortable ease and open warmth to this young woman; a genuineness that defies the stereotype we sometimes hold of those who make their living from their looks. At five-foot-nine, size four, with platinum blonde hair that finally reaches her shoulders (months ago she was forced to cut it super short due to over processing), dark brown eyes and those full, juicy lips ladies pay for, she is a stunner. Yet somehow she is your every girl, too. For one thing, the sigh she lets out at the sight of the freshly baked cinnamon buns dripping with thick, cream cheese icing is perhaps louder than my own. “I’m home for Thanksgiving,” the now Vancouverbased model says, “and I’m going to enjoy it.” Like me, she’s saving herself for the feast. In fact, Lynn welcomes the diligence it takes to stay on track with fitness, sleep, and healthy eating, while in the throes of working. The sacrifice makes downtime all the more delicious. “I’m meeting scouts in a few weeks, so after this weekend it’s soups and salads for a few weeks, then I can ease up a bit. I make a nice profit and then take time off.” Something else Lynn embraces? Her womanly figure. “It’s your job as a model to sell clothing and yes, models for high name brands—Couture—are skinny but I’m 22 OKANAGAN WOMAN WINTER | 2016

interested in swimsuit and lingerie… I like being curvier.” Admitting she tried the “model diet” earlier this year and got “really thin,” Lynn says the look just wasn’t her. “I had short hair like a boy and I really wasn’t attractive. I needed to put a little weight on.” Now that’s something you don’t hear from many women.

IN SEARCH OF HERSELF

Maybe that’s because Lynn has lingered on the other side. She wasn’t always a confident model strutting her stuff before the camera. For the duration of her high school years, she was significantly overweight, wondering if life was leaving her behind. Her candid account of that time and newfound wisdom defy her youth. “You’re only nineteen!” I gasp, tea scalding my tongue. “I know. I’m tall and sophisticated for my age,” she says smiling. “Being a model made me grow up and it created a stronger backbone because in this industry people judge you by how you hold yourself. You have to be confident.” Something this ambitious young woman earned through experience.

“I reached 200 pounds when I started high school at Princess Margaret,” she admits. “I had done everything possible to lose weight before that. I wanted it, but I wanted it fast, so I tried the Mean Green juice fast… all kinds of crazes.”

Lynn also tried stepping up her activity level with a gym membership and healthier eating but she says she was obsessed with the scale. A combination of factors, including rejoining a swim team, eating fresher, less processed foods prepared at home, limiting alcohol, and putting down her phone in favor of increased activity, helped her near her goal. It wasn’t until she understood the road to slim was really a search for her best self, however, that the light went on for Lynn, and the final thirty pounds came off for good. “When you’re losing weight you have to take into account you’re not doing it for anyone but yourself. At some point it isn’t about looking good for anyone else…I wanted to be my best for me…I was excited and full of positivity and that helped. When you finally find it within yourself, you can achieve crazy things.” Crazy things like dropping eighty pounds and getting discovered by a modeling agency.

IT FOUND HER

Nearing her goal weight, Lynn was happy. She had a best friend who supported her; a boyfriend (now fiancé) who had long loved her exactly the way she was; and a wonderful family who encouraged her to excel. One day, not long after she turned eighteen, she was headed to work at her parents’ shoe store, Softy’s Shoes and Comfort in Penticton (the couple also run Goody Two Shoes in West Kelowna), when she popped into the Soulfull Project retail store. “They mistook me for a model coming in for a casting they were holding. I nearly died because I was obsessed with America’s Next Top Model!” OKANAGAN WOMAN WINTER | 2016 23

MY MESSAGE TO YOUNG WOMEN: LOVE YOURSELF FIRST BEFORE YOU LOOK FOR LOVE ANYWHERE ELSE.

-Veronika Lynn

Going with the flow, Lynn had snaps taken and just like that, she was snapped up. “It found me!” she says. The store called her back to be part of their shoot while Deja Vu Model Management (dejavumodelmgmt.com) signed her from Kelowna. Fast forward eighteen months and Lynn is living in the big city and represented by the very prestigious Richard’s International Model Management (richardsmodels.com). The sought-after young woman is quick to praise her agents for their know-how and no nonsense approach. “They are strict but keep me on my toes. Yes, they want you to have the right hip and waist measurement (industry standard dictates a 34-inch hip) but they don’t want you to starve! There’s a lot of criticism about eating disorders among models and yes, it exists, but my agency says eat! Eat meat! Eat lots of small meals, ditch the processed

stuff, and eat healthy to stay healthy. They want natural girls but looking a certain way…it’s part of your job,” she says with a shrug. “It’s what you sign up for.” For someone who struggled for several years to be a certain size, Lynn appreciates the determination it takes to go for a goal and the immense satisfaction of achieving it. “I’m now with one of the top agencies in Canada, getting international contracts, and looking to the future, including moving to a new country to work.” Really, it’s not about the weight; it’s not about getting the boyfriend; it’s not even about landing the dream career. It’s about looking deep within and loving exactly what’s there and letting that out, sharing the inner beauty with the outer world, that has brought Lynn to this place in time.

Sarah Mickel

Feature Fashion Photographer

When Sarah Mickel was four-years-old she watched her father develop photographs, not realizing that photography would soon become her life passion. Fast forward a decade, teenage Mickel picked up her first camera, built her own dark room and completely fell in love with capturing moments through still images. Mickel, who is now a full-time photographer, was raised in Nelson B.C. and started out in the fashion world modeling in front of the camera. Mickel often paid more attention to what the photographers were doing, instead of smiling for the camera. Eventually, Mickel made the switch to behind the camera, capturing beautiful baby bumps and specializing in pregnancy photography. The professionally trained photographer decided to collaborate with Missy MacKintosh, hair and makeup artist from Kelowna, to create a wintry spread for Okanagan Woman’s fashion photoshoot. This amazing conception happened along the shores of Salmon Arm with the beautiful Paije Swanton in front of the lens. Salmon Arm was chosen as the backdrop for this shoot because it provided the grey blues Mickel had envisioned. She was also able to overexpose the background to create a snowy look. The clothing items for this shoot were crowdfunded by social media, including a jacket worn by Missy’s mother in the 1980s.

helps you love the skin you’re in! When it comes to choosing the right facility for your medical laser and aesthetic treatments, we understand it can be quite daunting. However, Dr. Crippen MD CCFP FCFP of DermMedica Laser Skin & Vein Solutions, believes he has the right solutions for you. The Kelowna-based clinic provides skin procedures like Botox, fillers, laser and vein treatments, tattoo and hair removal, for both men and women. They also accept many doctor referrals for clients with specific skin concerns.

Eight years ago, Dr. Craig Crippen joined the Kelowna Vein & Laser Centre. In just three years, he took over the business and re-branded it to what we now know as DermMedica. Crippen, originally from Ontario, attended three Canadian universities and received four educational titles including his Doctor of Medicine. The office is located in downtown Kelowna on Richter Street. Smiling nurses greet clients as they enter, and amazing before-and-after pictures line the office walls. The brightly-lit space creates a comfortable and inviting setting. “If we can do something for someone to help them feel better about themselves, that’s great. You can do many small things that make a big difference in someone’s life. People are happy to be here,” Crippen says. Which is why DermMedica see a lot of returning customers, including daughters bringing their moms in after receiving successful treatments.

While 90 per cent of clients are female currently, Dr. Crippen believes that some of the many diverse treatments offered at DermMedica are appealing more and more to men and expects the percentage to change in the near future. Coolsculpting being one of the big attractions. At the initial consultation, or referral from a physician, clients meet with DermMedica’s experienced and friendly staff for discussions, followed by definitive 3D photography. After the photographic session, Crippen reviews all information with the client and a procedural plan is agreed upon. Outside of his passion for helping change people’s lives for the better, Dr. Crippen and his wife, Charlene, Director of Operations for DermMedica, are raising their first child, a wonderful baby girl only months into this world!. Crippen and Charlene met shortly after he arrived in Kelowna, many years ago and the rest is history.

6 PRETTY HOLIDAY HAIR IDEAS TO TRY BRAID-IT

Dress It Up

Holiday Hair

ALL DRESSED UP

Here’s a holiday hair accessory we can get behind. After prepping damp hair with Kerastase Mousse Bouffant, create volume in the hair by blow drying with a large round brush. Loosely backcomb all your hair to help create texture. Rub a small amount of Baume Double Jeu into your hands and using your fingers direct your hair away from your face. Drape a headband over the hair. Use bobby pins to secure it. Add beads, jewels or satin ribbon to decorate a simple headband This is a great opportunity to recycle an old necklace or fish through your grandmother’s costume jewelry.

Braids toe the line between polished and edgy. To create this look, prep hair with a leave-in cream giving heat protection and nourishment, blow dry straight (although your hair doesn’t have to be perfectly smooth if you’re in a hurry). Take a hazelnut size of Kerastase Baume Double Jeu and rub between your hands, this will give you some control and texture when creating your braid. Divide your hair in half at the back of the head and weave the tail into two, three-strand braids, securing the ends with an elastic band, then wrap around the head and secure with 2 bobby pins. They don’t need to be completely invisible, it’s part of the look. To finish, pull a few wispy pieces of hair out and leave free around the face.

To get this look use a volumizer through the roots and power dry hair to 90 per cent dry. Then using a large round brush create your volume on the top of the head with rough-dried hair. Once dry, spritz over the ends, blasting them with the blowdryer to create a “rough base”. Divide the hair from top-toback and ear-to-ear, securing and secure the top section. Lightly back comb the back section. Apply a small amount of a moulding paste in your hands and twist the hair into a knot at the nape of the neck. Secure with bobby pins. Now backcomb the top section and repeat same action, this time twisting the hair and let it sit on top of the underneath section. Finish by raking your fingers lightly through the top and create the soft texture and finish with Kerastase Laque Couture for hold.

SHARP CHIGNON

ROMANTIC TWIST

An updo with texture for a fresh and feminine look

A sleek, low knot is the perfect way to make a major fashion statement. Begin by making a deep side part and smoothing a dab of styling cream through damp hair, flattening the hair against the head. After securing the ends into a ponytail at the nape

of neck, weave the tail into a three-strand braid, coil up into a chignon and secure it with bobby pins. For a slight difference create your chignon off to one side behind your ear. Place it on the side where you have taken most of your hair. Finally, spray a shine serum over the whole head for a finish as smooth as ice.

WRAPPED UP

Take a break from gift wrapping and wrap up your hair. It’s a lot more fun (and a lot less tedious). Make two braids; one on either side of the head behind the hairline to just beneath the crown. Take this opportunity to use up that stretchy giftwrapping ribbon you’ve probably got stashed in the closet. Leave the bottom part of your hair free, and curl with a large barrel curling iron for soft movement. Spray a shine serum over the whole head for added shine and you’re good to go! for Brows that WOW BROWS ARE THE PILLARS OF THE FACE AND THEY FRAME THE EYES, SO IT’S WORTH SHINING A BIT OF FOCUS ON THEM.

First of all, rest assured, there is a very small percentage of the population that have natural brows that wow! and with every decade we grace the earth, it is quite common to notice thinning brows for a variety of reasons. So where to begin? It is best to start out by viewing yourself front and center in your mirror. Assess which brow has the more desirable shape (remember, no one has eyebrows that match perfectly)

The aim is to give your brows a natural wash of color and a fuller appearance, so try using a recipe of two products. This may give the best results and the greatest ease in achieving your brow goals.

Hot Lip TIPS Red lips are a sign of celebration and confidence.. what better time to wear than now! BIG KISSES XX

IF YOU’RE ONE TO SHY AWAY FROM RED LIPSTICK BECAUSE YOU’RE WORRIED ABOUT YOUR TEETH LOOKING YELLOW, OR “FEATHERING”, OR YOU BELIEVE IT MAY HIGHLIGHT THE FACT THAT YOUR LIPS ARE NOT SYMMETRICAL, HERE ARE THREE EASY REMEDIES.

34 OKANAGAN WOMAN WINTER | 2016

TO SHAPE AND PERFECT: •

To fill the brows at the center, bringing the middle points slightly closer together, you can use the inner tear duct area or slightly beyond as a marker to see where you want your brows to begin

A fine tipped brow pencil gives precision. A useful tool to help you mimic brow hairs to achieve a more natural finish. Remember to brush through your brow hairs when finished with a spooly brush (looks like a dry mascara wand) to blend in any excess product

Short, almost feather weight strokes, add structure without looking too heavy or artificial For darker hair, choose one to two shades lighter, to offer better balance If you have lighter hair you can opt for a shade or two darker A powdered shadow product gives you a healthy depth of color A gel product, colored or clear, gives you control over the hair direction and a touch of volume

• • • •

1. 2.

3.

For brighter teeth appearance, choose a blue undertone in your red lipstick To prevent feathering, matte liquid lipsticks offer opaque coverage, long wearing, non transferring and best of all, they do not “bleed” into the textured skin around the lips. Apply with a tight tipped, small headed lipstick brush to give you maximum control. Then use the straight edge of a makeup sponge dipped into pressed powder, matching your skin tone, this will help keep the edges sharp. For symmetry, take note of which side of your lips you prefer and trace lightly with a lip pencil on the opposite side to mimic the shape, then fill with your liquid lipstick to create a more balanced look.

Michelle Behr

Feature Fashion Photographer

It’s been 12 years since Michelle Behr bought her first camera and she’s ready now to delve into photography for the fashion industry. Previously known as a wedding photographer in the Okanagan, Behr says she’s itching to do more creative work and the fashion industry is on her to-do list. The self-taught photographer, who has lived in the Okanagan for the past seven years, has a background in art therapy. But, she says she’s always been inspired by her grandmother who was in the fashion industry her whole life.

CONGRATULATIONS MICHELLE!

Photography to Behr is a way of expressing yourself visually in a way to reach people on a whole different level. Reaching people is exactly what she was hoping for when she submitted her photographs to Okanagan Woman for the winter fashion spread.

Thank you for sharing your amazing talent with Okanagan Woman’s readers.

Behr was inspired by the Okanagan Woman winter theme, which included winter blues, burnished browns and a whole lot of fur. Immediately Behr knew she wanted her model, Tina Lee to wear Wolf + Sadie jewellery. The minimalistic, steel pieces were exactly what Behr wanted for this Okanagan Woman shoot. After choosing the jewellery, Behr reached out to Bia Boro Kelowna for their clothing pieces to accompany the jewellery.

ONE WOMAN’S WORDS OF WISDOM When Helen Jennens lost her son Rian to a prescription drug overdose five years ago, she believed it was the worst thing that could happen to a mother. She was wrong.

38 OKANAGAN WOMAN WINTER | 2016

On January 14 2016, Helen lost her second son to drugs. This time, the long-reaching tentacles of the killer drug Fentanyl ended the life of her son Tyler, at age 40. Tyler, a struggling heroin addict, had been seeking help for his addiction. The “point” of heroin he’d taken was later found to be pure fentanyl, and it appeared to have killed him instantly.

Tyler’s was not the face of a stereotypical drug user. He was a handsome, funny, smart, industrious man with two kids.

Tyler’s was not the face of a stereotypical drug user. He was a handsome, funny, smart, industrious man with two kids. He was close to his large family. His drug use started some seven years ago, when he was given opiates after surgery. He had been to rehab and received mental health counselling. He had detoxed and become clean and went back to drugs. It was a struggle that would see-saw for five years, following the death of his brother. Upon the death of each of her sons, Helen immersed herself in the fight against addiction. She undertakes countless interviews and works hard to end the silence and the stigma of drug addiction.

She promotes education and has linked up with organizations and individuals who are already part of the battle. She is helping to create hope and change for the future. She has become a respected voice in the battle against death-by-drugs, and her recommendations may come as a surprise to many. She is involved with several progressive groups working on addiction and mental health strategies and solutions. She gives tirelessly of herself when approached by frightened or grieving parents. “The work we are doing is not for ourselves. It’s too late for our kids. But addiction is wide-spread and it can happen to anyone. I know that. No one sets out to be a drug addict. We’re trying to help other kids, and they could be yours,” Helen says. “The largest percentage of fentanyl deaths are recreational drug users, kids who go to school or play hockey.” Despite all of the pain her sons and her family have suffered, she believes there is cause for hope through understanding, communication and education. Helen speaks of the “wall of shame” associated with drug addiction, which affects not only abusers but their entire families. Addicts feel deep shame for their lack of power over drugs and their

families share that burden. The beginning of the solution is simply to start talking about it and creating awareness of the facts surrounding drug addiction. And, she believes, addiction begins with “the hole in the soul,” to paraphrase Dr. Gabor Mate. Dr. Gabor Maté is a preeminent expert on addiction and its relationship with mental health. He spent many years practicing from his own clinic on East Hastings Street in Vancouver, has written critically acclaimed books and is a renowned speaker on the subject. Dr. Gabor Maté believes that addiction is related to deeply personal, emotional pain that an addict suffers from… the “hole in the soul”. On February 27, Dr. Gabor Maté will be speaking in Kelowna as part of the Child and Youth Mental Health and Substance Use (CYMHSU) collaborative and University of British Columbia Okanagan campus (UBCO) Speakers Series. Fentanyl-related deaths have seen a dramatic, province-wide increase in 2016. Last spring, the Government of British Columbia declared a state of emergency related to drug overdoses. That declaration should result in the creation of resources to battle these problems, although Helen says it has been somewhat slow to happen.

OKANAGAN WOMAN WINTER | 2016 39

MOMS STOP THE HARM IS A NETWORK OF BRAVE WESTERN CANADIAN MOTHERS WHO HAVE LOST CHILDREN TO DRUG MISUSE, AND WHO NOW ADVOCATE FOR POLICY REFORMS BASED ON SCIENCE AND HUMAN RIGHTS. THEIR GOAL IS TO REDUCE THE VARIOUS HARMS FOR PEOPLE ASSOCIATED WITH PROBLEMATIC DRUG ABUSE. SEE MOMSSTOPTHEHARM.COM FOR MORE DETAILS.

“Opiates and painkillers prescribed for pain are often the beginning of addiction. Many addictions start with prescription pads. And there are those who, after just a single experimental use of a drug, become addicted. These actions lead to a lifetime battle against addiction.” Helen is actively involved in the CYMHSU collaborative, which involves people from all walks of life including doctors, police, parents and mental health experts. Funded by the BC Government, their goal is to open a “hub” in Kelowna, one of six planned for BC. “We are developing a fully integrated health-services hub. If someone arrives in the morning, the goal will be to have them seen by the appropriate professionals and have a plan developed that same day. We envision a peoplefriendly, relaxed atmosphere with one stop access to immediate care. The Hub is going to fill some gaps in the current system. If that hub had existed earlier, maybe my son’s life would have turned out differently,” Helen explains. She is also part of a second group, Moms Stop the Harm. It is a network of brave Western Canadian mothers who have lost children to drug misuse, and who now advocate for policy reforms based on science and human rights. Their goal is to reduce the various harms for people associated

with problematic drug abuse. See momsstoptheharm.com for more details. “Harm reduction is the approach here,” says Helen. “A dead addict can never recover. We want to keep them alive and safe until they can make a better choice on another day.” While supervised safe injection sites remain a controversial topic, Helen says there are some very good reasons to consider that option. Drug use is contained, paraphernalia isn’t left on the streets and addicts regularly connect with professionals who can help them overcome their dependency. Helen believes decriminalization should be considered, as other countries have done so with much success. “If you decriminalize drugs, you take the biggest, baddest players out of the equation – that is, the dealers. They’re all about greed. You would get rid of tainted drugs and stop the needless, preventable murder of people who unknowingly consume fentanyl.” In the short term, she says, there is much to be done and even more to hope for. Youth speakers must be trained to speak to other kids and their parents about the dangers of drugs. And, more affordable recovery beds are desperately needed. The broader access to naloxone is already saving lives and it will be even more readily available over time. She points out

40 OKANAGAN WOMAN WINTER | 2016

that another life-saving measure would be to make it impossible to access the ingredients to create the drugs, including tightening border controls. Throughout her personal struggles, and those of her sons’ family, Helen has managed to chart a personal course of action that reflects her high hopes for change in the future. “Every single life is worth saving,” she states emphatically. “Losing a life, like Tyler’s, is a profound loss for his children, his mom, his sister and grandparents, to name but a few. The ripple effect is vast.” She repeats the need for peer-to-peer counselling, to talk to adults and kids about drug abuse, depression, anxiety and sexuality. The consortium is creating a supply of trained speakers. The group is working closely with students at UBCO, who are preparing a campaign against drug use for their students. After preliminary work is complete the program will be rolled out into the broader community. “When we bring down the wall of shame and stigma and start talking about it; when we become truly honest and open-minded, we will get ahead of this issue,” Helen states. “The responsibility lies with all of us including parents, kids, government, health organizations, police and the general public. It’s time to create a caring, connected community.”

H.O.P.E. IS THE NIGHTTIME OUTREACH FOR HOMELESS AND EXPLOITED WOMEN IN THE KELOWNA AREA, SPECIFICALLY IN THE DOWNTOWN CORE. H.O.P.E. was founded by Angie Lohr, who knows first-hand what it is like to live on the street. Angie also knows there are very limited resources in the Okanagan for the homeless, especially for women and children. H.O.P.E. volunteers go out seven nights a week at dusk and walk the streets of downtown with the goal of providing the women they encounter with the support and tools they need for survival. The volunteers carry supply bags with basic necessities to give out. Additionally, the volunteers build relationships with the women, encouraging and supporting them get the help they need. Volunteers note the names and ages of these girls and women and H.O.P.E. executives try to keep track of the women to ensure their safety. Volunteers take “bad date reports” and report instances of violence and abuse that sex-workers encounter. Bad Date Reports are circulated to Prince George, Kamloops, Merritt, Penticton, Vernon and Kelowna.

In March 2014, the 70 volunteers of H.O.P.E. Outreach and House of H.O.P.E. Safe House were named winners of the Gert Beadle Group Award, which recognizes the value of the invisible work that is done at the community level to enhance women’s equality. By receiving practical and emotional support and access to the appropriate resources, women are offered the opportunity to rebuild their lives and rediscover their voices. Ultimately, H.O.P.E. is constantly seeking funding to sustain the night time outreach and to purchase supplies for the volunteers to hand out on the streets. Welcome,Winter! When the world is enveloped in white, the LOL rejoice in the chance to light a crackling fire, sink into our sofas and cozy up with some delicious reads. Along with delectable food, sumptuous sips and stimulating conversation, every month the LOL collect contributions for the hosting member’s charity of choice. BEFORE THE FALL BY NOAH HAWLEY Get ready for a roller coaster of a ride when you sign up for this story. Noah Hawley, writer and producer of the FX television show Fargo, is the guy behind the pen and man, is it obvious he’s a screenwriter! The chapters are short, quick paced and tension-filled, yet interlaced with profound insights to human nature. Youth Services Assistant at the Kelowna branch of the Okanagan Regional Library, Judy Millard, chose this book. While searching the ORL catalogue she came across the title and was immediately intrigued by the premise: “On a foggy summer night, eleven people – ten privileged, one down on his luck painter – depart Martha’s Vineyard on a private jet headed for New York. Sixteen minutes later the

unthinkable happens: the plane plunges into the ocean.” The only survivors are the artist and a four-year-old boy. Told in parallel narratives involving the crash and ensuing investigation, interwoven with the backstories of the passengers and crew, Hawley sets readers up to unravel a mystery. Why

did the plane go down with so many influential people on board? Who are these people – really? We sense something sinister, and indeed every character has a hidden past. There’s the multi-millionaire media mogul, David Bateman, whose son survives, the Wall Street winner dabbling in international money laundering and our recovering alcoholic artist, Scott Burroughs, who paints disaster scenes in an attempt to reconcile his own train wreck of a life. Included are their families, the crew, and even the investigators on the ground, as we get a brief glimpse into many lives. At first Burroughs is hailed as a hero. He survives the crash, surfacing among flaming debris to find the boy. Fighting waves, sharks, the dark and a dislocated shoulder, he manages to swim hours to shore, the child clinging to his neck. As implausible as that may seem, when Burroughs was just six years old, he witnessed Jack LaLanne swim from Alcatraz Island to Fisherman’s Wharf, handcuffed, dragging a 1,000 pound boat chained to his waist. “What was his fascination with the King of Exercise if not a fascination with the power of the human spirit?” Hawley asks. LaLanne inspires Burroughs to become a champion college swimmer with the skills and mental fortitude to eventually save a child. Fate is a central theme. “How any two people end up in the same place at the same time is a mystery. You get on an elevator with a dozen strangers. You ride a bus, wait in line at the bathroom. It happens every day. To try to predict the places we’ll go and the people we’ll meet would be pointless.” While Borroughs shuns his newfound fame, the media refuses to let him hide. Bill Cunningham, the obnoxious and irredeemable anchor of Bateman’s news network, profits from the tragedy by keeping the story alive. Spinning conspiracy theories and ultimately blaming Burroughs for the tragedy, Cunningham is the face of today’s 24hour news cycle. “Reinvention used to be a tool of the artist… to take a reality and repurpose it, bend it to an idea … it was the kingdom of make-believe. A useful tool for the artist… A dangerous tool for the journalist,” Hawley says. Judy loved what she calls “the power play of perception versus reality” in this novel….how everyone assumed the crash had to be an act of terrorism

4.5/5 Cheers!

THE NAKEDS BY LISA GLATT The title of this “family drama set against the backdrop of the sexual revolution and 1970’s California,” is certainly catching. At the tender age of six, Hannah is having a really bad morning when her parents’ marriage dissolves in their sunny kitchen after her mother confronts her father about his affair. Sneaking out and walking to school alone, Hannah is hit by a reckless driver barely out of school himself, and still drunk from the night before. The book interweaves the lives of these two characters as they endure the next decade; Hannah in a hip to toe body cast as orthopedic surgeon after surgeon attempts to fix her maimed leg; Martin Kettle drinking and drugging himself silly in attempt to deal with his guilt after fleeing the accident scene. While Martin leaves anonymous gifts at the hospital for the very slowly healing Hannah, he eventually moves to Las Vegas, running away from his pain. Meanwhile, Hannah’s family is also running from their origins. Her father, a dentist, is newly remarried to his younger assistant and denounces Judaism in favor of Christianity and surfing. Her mother Nina, a high school English teacher, also finds a younger spouse. Azeem is a Muslim man and university student studying sexuality who mistakenly calls nudists, “nakeds.” Perhaps a little too hip to the 70’s liberal marriage plan, his unquenchable pleas for Nina to “open her marriage” fall on deaf ears, although she does agree to join him at a nudist camp on weekends. The two run around the house in their birthday suits, subjecting poor Hannah to much more of them than she would really like.

As Hannah negotiates the treacherous domain of adolescence, she is never really naked, since her leg is perpetually covered in plaster. Told in alternating viewpoints, it is a work of fiction, but Lisa Glatt admits it is at least partially autobiographical. She too was hit by a car, had parents who divorced and a mother who became a nudist, though the author is quick to suggest she has taken great liberties with the truth. “I realized without fiction’s permission to lie and tell stories, I’m not really interested in the exact truth that happened,” she told the LA Times… “I start with this thing that’s very true, knowing that I’m going to be making things up, putting story first.” The book is a very quick and entertaining read. There’s some lovely writing from Glatt, also a poet, and it’s incredibly witty and funny. LOL member, Vikki Drummond, proprietor of Bordello’s Italian Pizzeria in Kelowna, chose this book largely based upon the title. The human condition called to her in this book as she suggested, “Each character was flawed and also likeable and that’s very true to life.” While she thought this book “delicious,” not all of the LOL agreed. Some found the family dysfunction unsettling. The ambiguous ending annoyed many, although as Kirkus Review points out, “Hope is as much a curse as it is a blessing in this novel… What Glatt leaves her characters—and her readers—with is possibility.” Personally, I loved it! It certainly generated quite the conversation at our meeting, which is the hallmark of a great book club choice.

ChaiTea

When we talk about “chai-flavored” anything, in my opinion the dominant flavor we’re really talking about is green cardamom.

YOU CAN REHEAT CHAI EASILY - SO IF YOU’RE TAKING THE TIME TO MAKE CHAI GO FOR IT!

PRIMARY CHAI SPICES: Green cardamom pods - 7 pods - the key ingredient - give chai it’s flavor break pods in a spice pestle Cinnamon stick - For sweetness and warmth about a 2” stick Fennel seed - Offers a gentle anise or licorice about 1/2 tsp Fresh ginger - Flavors the whole pot of tea with a fresher spice - a chunk about the size of 1/2 your thumb - from tip to first joint - sliced. BY PERSONAL PREFERENCE: Black peppercorns - Gives the chai a spicy bite - just one or two corns Whole cloves - Musky and strong try one or two at most, as it can overtake the flavor in chai Coriander seeds - Sweet and mild, with a citrus note - just a few if you like coriander Star anise - A darker, sweeter licorice flavor than the greener fennel seed - a few petals broke from the pod ESTIMATE HOW MANY CUPS OF CHAI YOU WANT TO MAKE. THE INGREDIENTS OUTLINED ABOVE ADD FLAVOR FOR ABOUT 4 - 5 REGULAR CUPS OF CHAI.

METHOD: 1.

2. 3.

4.

Measure out water for the number of cups you want, bring water to a boil on the stove. Add a bit more water as it boils on the stove for about an hour and reduces in volume. Add only the spices to the water (tea is added later). Bring water/spices to boil then turn down to a low simmer. When the water has changed color and you can see waves in the water from the steeping spices (about 20 minutes) add Red Rose tea bags (1 bag per cup - Red Rose is the brand preferred by East Indian chai makers). Continue to boil the tea in the pot with spices until the water turns a deep orange/ red/brown color (another 20 minutes). You should not see the bottom of the pot when it’s the right color.

5.

6.

Reduce the chai from boiling to a very low simmer. Add milk (2% is creamy, whole is very creamy and rich). Add milk based on your own preference (like adding milk to coffee). Keep the chai on the stove - warm up the milk but DO NOT BOIL. Fish out the teabags from the chai with a spoon; strain out spices with a small strainer while pouring the chai into cups. Add a tsp of sugar (or to taste) as you are serving it. Sugar really brings out the flavor of the spices so try it with sugar and without (you’ll taste how sugar really enhances the spicy flavor).

ENJOY your CHAI!

Geoff McLeary, owner of Sleepy’s Bedroom Furniture and Sleep Shop in Kelowna spoke with Okanagan Woman about what to look for when you’re making a pillow purchase.

Okanagan Woman

We know that there is nothing better than crawling into your cozy bed after a long day, but if your pillow isn’t up to par with your mattress, it might not be so comfortable.

YOUR BED SURFACE

The most important thing when it comes to buying a pillow is making sure it will match your bed. When you’re in the shop, be sure to know what type of mattress you’re sleeping on. If the mattress is soft, you’ll want a softer pillow. If the mattress is firm, you’ll want a firm pillow.

YOUR SLEEPING POSITION

The second thing you should know before picking up the next pillow you’ll be laying down on is what position you sleep in. What is your ratio from shoulder to neck? If you’re a stomach sleeper, you may want something thin and soft, so your neck isn’t contorted. If you’re a side sleeper, you’ll want something that fits into your shoulder crevice. If you’re a back sleeper, you’ll want a medium soft pillow, so it fits comfortably into the nape of your neck.

THE GENRE OF PILLOW

Are you hoping for a tree hugging organic pillow? Memory foam? Latex? Synthetic? Allergy relief? There are so many different options to choose from!

THE TYPE OF PILLOW

Pillows can range anywhere from $10 to $300. There are shape sifting pillows that you can move and adjust while you’re sleeping. There are pillows with holes throughout them. The holes give you zones, which eliminates ear pressure and gives greater neck support. There are also pillows infused with natural essential oils like lavender, chamomile and peppermint. These help with deeper sleep, relaxation and headaches. Finally, there are pillows that help you go to sleep earlier and will make you wake up happier. These pillows are great for people with sleep insomnia.

CARING FOR YOUR PILLOW

Once you choose your pillow, you will want to take care of it. A lot of stores offer pillow protectors, which is an important purchase if you’re spending a lot of money on your pillow. Protectors can help stop skin, dust, moisture, makeup, sweat and drool from seeping into the pillow.

my dad sells the best mattresses ;)

Investing in your health with a great MATTRESS! M

WISE ADVICE:

attresses aren’t made the same way they used to be, but at Sleepy’s

I believe the term “what goes around, comes around” applies to what they are offering their clients. “Back in 1984 when I opened my store, the best selling mattress set in BC was $999 for a queen size and 33 years later the big furniture and mattress stores are still promoting a $999 queen size or lower? Do you think you will receive anywhere near the same quality today for that same price?” asks Geoff McLeary, owner of Sleepy’s. “I think not!”. Back in the day, mattresses were made to last, like a piece of furniture. The mattress is the most used piece of furniture in your home and the comfort, support and construction are

directly attributed to your health. “My parents slept on a natural mattress and probably didn’t even know it? Their mattresses lasted well over a decade as they were able to flip them over and rotate them to increase its longevity and performance” says McLeary. Fast forward to today and spring type mattresses are now made one sided only, so you can’t flip them, creating deep troughs where the sleepers lay and a firm hump up the middle between them. Some manufacturers are now saying that their beds will only last up to 5 years of decent use. The big stores are demanding more profit and the makers are forced to provide a mattress that looks great but lacks integrity due to the lower cost. Everyone wins except the consumer.

“Always buy a good bed and a good pair of shoes…..because, if you’re not in one, you’re in the other!”

Sleepy’s are a breath of fresh air, literally as they are a green, natural, and organic sleep shop that offer mattresses that are good for you. “We do not sell toxic memory foam or anything with fire retardants, we have resurrected the 2 sided spring mattress, our specialty is latex mattresses and toppers, we offer handmade natural mattresses and we dictate what goes into our sleep sets from our suppliers” he says. Integrity is key, as Sleepy’s are the “Home of No Body Impressions”. In looking around his store it strikes me as more of a healthy bedroom store than a big box mattress store.

When you walk into Sleepy’s you will notice a difference! “When shopping for a new mattress it is imperative to do your research first” McLeary continues “the bedding industry is full of smoke and mirrors, greenwashing, and deceptive pricing. Protect yourself as a consumer and use good old fashioned common sense.”

Your perfect mattress is out there and we just happen to believe it is waiting for you at Sleepy’s.
