From fitness and volunteering to festivals and retail, we will cover a wide range of events and activities in the region – helping our new citizens get a leg-up on their new lives here in Oklahoma City. Each week, we will publish two posts, one covering a new topic, such as farmers’ markets in the area or an upcoming festival, and one featuring a list of upcoming events in the area. Readers will be able to comment on each post to share their experiences and get better connected. They can also connect with the Chamber and other readers through social media outlets. This new program will work in concert with a variety of existing Chamber programs and events to help new residents get more involved and become better acquainted with the city we call home. Our city has come a long way, and it’s important that we take a chance to appreciate the incredible quality of life opportunities available to all of us. As our city continues to grow and change, you can be sure the Chamber will continue its work to promote Oklahoma City and act as one of its greatest advocates. For more information about this program and for more information about how your company can utilize this program for new employees, check out the story on page 5.

PROGRAM PROMOTES OKC TO NEW RESIDENTS Once e-mail addresses are received, each individual will receive an introductory e-mail explaining the program and, if they choose to continue their subscription, will receive weekly e-mails featuring a link to the week’s post. “By utilizing our membership of more than 5,000 companies in Greater Oklahoma City, we can reach a wide base of individuals who are looking to discover more about our city,” said Williams. If your company would like more information on the program or sign up new employees, contact Marcus Elwell at melwell@okcchamber.com or 297-8971. Greater Oklahoma City’s strong economy and vibrant quality of life have led to an influx of new residents to the region, and the Chamber is doing its best to ensure that they get the full benefits of living and working in Oklahoma City. In an effort to reach new residents and help them adjust to life in Oklahoma City, the Greater Oklahoma City Chamber has launched a new program – “The Better Life: Giving you the 411 on the 405.” “Each time a company brings new employees to our city, we have a real opportunity to ‘wow’ them,” said Roy H. Williams, president and CEO, Greater Oklahoma City Chamber. “And when we ‘wow’ them, we will not only help them gain their footing in their new home, but also gain new and engaged members of the community.”

• To subscribe to the blog or check out one of the posts, visit www.abetterlifeokc.com/the-better-life. • To stay up-to-date on the latest posts and get engaged with other followers, check out “The Better Life” on Twitter at www.twitter.com/betterlifeOKC and Facebook at www.facebook.com/thebetterlifeOKC.

Discovering the Better Life

The Chamber is partnering with local businesses to gather e-mail addresses of new residents by accessing employees new to the region. “This program is an excellent tool for companies looking to help their new employees get better acquainted with our city,” said Williams. “Research shows that employees are more likely to be happy and remain in their job if they are also satisfied with their quality of life. We want to ensure that our new residents understand the many opportunities available to them and become a part of our community.”

Oklahoma City is full of surprises. We boast friendly people. An awardwinning, family-friendly zoo and a fantastic hands-on science museum. Fresh farmers markets and trendy local coffee shops. An exciting, dynamic arts and music scene. More than 300 days of sunshine per year. A great sense of community. No matter what you’re into, Oklahoma City offers it. And if you’re looking to discover more about what Oklahoma City has to offer, you’ve come to the right place. The Better Life is all about why living in Oklahoma City truly means a better living and a better life. Whether you’re new to our fine city or you’ve been here for years, there’s always something new to discover in Oklahoma City and we’re here to keep you informed.

May 2011 - Greater Oklahoma City Chamber The Point!

The program includes two components – weekly e-mails and a weekly blog. The blog is available to the public through the Chamber’s website that targets new residents, www.abetterlifeokc.com, and showcases an activity or location in Greater Oklahoma City, as well as a calendar for upcoming events in the area. Readers can get engaged and share their Oklahoma City experiences through a comment feature on the blog.

“The opportunity to present such a vast and important collection of biblical artifacts is exceptional,” said Glen Gentele, president and CEO, Oklahoma City Museum of Art. “The exhibition provides a once-in-a-lifetime experience for guests to engage with these rare materials at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art.” On display in Oklahoma City through October 16, 2011, Passages will then travel to St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City in October 2011 with the full schedule to be announced at a later date. Some items are also presently on exhibition at museums and specialty libraries across Europe. Passages paves the way for a permanent, soon-to-be-selected site where visitors can interact, not only with The Green

INTERN OKC PROMOTES OKC TO FUTURE WORKFORCE Continued from Page 1

Today’s college graduates are smart and results-oriented, and bring indispensable skills to the table. As we continue to grow the state’s economy and strengthen the region, it’s vital that these talented future workers stay in our region. Greater Oklahoma City companies can contribute to the growth and development of the city’s workforce by offering internships to recent or future graduates. By creating internship opportunities, companies will recruit, retain and reward young talent that is vital to the future of Oklahoma City, and more importantly, it can help individual businesses identify and hire future employees. Kick-off for this year’s program is Thursday, June 9 from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. The weekly luncheons occur every Wednesday beginning June 15 and conclude July 6. The cost to register interns for the program is $75 per intern, which includes lunch at each session. For more information or for assistance identifying your internship needs, visit www.greatergrads.com.

InternOKC is a four-week program that highlights the benefits of living and working in Greater Oklahoma City.

Convention & Visitors Bureau Spotlight: Red Earth Native American Cultural Festival Celebrates 25 Years

Through the years, Red Earth has matured into one of the most respected visual and performing arts event of its type – setting the standard for many of today’s Indian art shows held throughout the nation. The Red Earth Festival was recently named one of the “10 Great Places to be Wowed by American Indian Culture” by USA Today. The Festival has also been named ”Oklahoma’s Outstanding Event” by the Oklahoma Tourism & Recreation Department, a “Top 100 Event in North America” by the American Bus Association and Central Oklahoma’s “Outstanding Cultural Tourism Event” by Frontier Country Marketing Association.

“Red Earth dancers represent the elite of Native American dance, some of the most gifted and accomplished in the world,” said Eric Oesch, deputy director and director of communications of Red Earth, Inc. “The masters, each in their own distinctive tribal dress, exhibit their originality and skills in one of the most prestigious of all native dance competitions.” A grand parade, unlike any other parade in the world, opens the 25th Annual Red Earth Festival on Friday morning. The streets of downtown Oklahoma City will vibrate in Native American tribal spirit as representatives of more than 100 tribes, in full tribal regalia, make the Red Earth Parade one of America’s most unique. The Red Earth Art Market opens Friday, June 3 at 11 a.m. and the first Grand Entry of dance competitors begins at noon inside the Cox Convention Center Arena. Grand Entries are scheduled to perform at noon and 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and at noon on Sunday. The Red Earth Run, a 5k and 10k run, scheduled at 8 a.m. Saturday June 4 on Regatta Park River Trails along the Oklahoma River in downtown Oklahoma City, is open to runners and walkers of all ages and abilities. Purchase tickets online at www.ticketmaster.com. Active U.S. Military and U.S. Military veterans receive an admission discount with a valid Military I.D. For additional information contact Red Earth, Inc. at 427-5228 or visit www.redearth.org.

Guests at the Red Earth Native American Cultural Festival can sample the work of some of the nation’s most celebrated artists, with opportunities to purchase contemporary and traditional examples of beadwork, basketry, jewelry, pottery, sculpture, paintings, graphics and cultural attire during the juried art show and market. The dance competition at Red Earth is one of the rare occasions when dancers from America’s Northern and Southern tribes can be seen together in one venue.

Learn more about the CVB and upcoming events in Oklahoma City at www.visitokc.com.

May 2011 - Greater Oklahoma City Chamber The Point!

When the Silver Anniversary Red Earth Native American Cultural Festival opens at the Cox Convention Center Friday, June 3, in downtown Oklahoma City, more than 1,200 American Indian artists and dancers from throughout North America will gather to celebrate the richness and diversity of their heritage with the world. For three exciting days, Oklahoma City will be at the center of Native American art and culture as more than 30,000 people gather to celebrate.

Feeling a little uncomfortable with your current CPA firm? Then they must not be a good fit. Maybe they’re too small and can’t provide the expertise you need. Or maybe they’re too big and don’t care about your business at all. With HoganTaylor, however, you can get all the experience of the big guys, with all the care and personal attention you’d expect from a smaller firm. Don’t let your CPA relationship flounder. Get a firm that fits.
