The pandemic: How COVID-19 changed Oklahoma City By Rose Lane Editor It was on March 11, 2020, when things really started to change as COVID-19 began to spread through Oklahoma. That evening, the OKC Thunder were set to take on the Utah Jazz. Carol Schaller

and her husband John were there. “We hadn’t been to a game in three years and were excited to see them play the Utah Jazz,” she said. “We got there early and were in our seats watching the teams warm up.” About the time the game was going to start, Carol said

they saw the referees conferring with both team coaches and a few other people. “After a few minutes, we watched the Utah Jazz team walk off the court,” she said. “The next thing we saw was the Thunder players leaving the floor with their coach.” A buzz went through the Chesapeake Arena that the

game was not going to go on. The announcer came on and informed everyone that the NBA had cancelled the game and he asked everyone to leave in an orderly manner. “Many friends knew we were going to the game and our phones started buzzing with texts and phone calls

wanting to know what was happening,” Carol said. “All we could tell them is what the announcer had said, though we were hearing talk of a player having COVID-19. As we walked to our car, I looked at John and said, ‘We See COVID, Page 12

ART From Page 1 Dennis Johnson. The show continues through March 27 in the PAC at 3024 Paseo. A retired executive and co-owner of Public Supply Company, Bennett started painting two years ago while recovering from knee replacement surgery. He said Johnson has helped him with perception, design and other aspects of painting. He said painting has enriched his retirement and his family has supported him tremendously, both with their critique and their encouragement. Everest said she paints “for the sheer joy of it.” “It simply makes me happy and it’s where my two passions, color and nature, can come together,” she said. “Color lifts my spirits, calms

my mind, energizes and inspires me. Nature does the same.” She said Johnson encourages her to experiment with different techniques and styles. Hill has appreciated art his entire life. He first drew cartoons for the Casady School newspaper while in high school. After his retirement as a practicing anesthesiologist, he returned to painting. Hill is continuously evolving his painting techniques through weekly classes with Johnson. Another student of Johnson, Jane White said that as she approaches a white canvas, “all I can imagine are vibrant colors.” “Using those colors, I recall memories for myself and for the viewer.” Unexpected visions intrigue her, whether they are an old church, peaceful vista, pastoral landscape or enchanted forest. id 90, a new documentary about growing up famous in Hollywood in the 1990’s, premieres this week on Hulu. The film is directed by Soleil Moon Frye, an actress who became famous at eight years old as the child star of NBC’s Punky Brewster. Frye became an avid filmmaker in her teens, taking her video camera everywhere. Kid 90 presents her video footage for the first time, offering a very personal look at growing up famous and the impact fame and success have on the kids. Kid 90 is Executive Produced by Leonardo DiCaprio, arguably the biggest movie star of the 1990’s, thanks to the global blockbuster Titanic. His clout and Frye’s enduring friendships allow for intimate access to the decade’s most popular young actors, from television stars like Mark-Paul Gosselaar (Saved by the Bell, NYPD Blue) and Brian Austin Green (Beverly Hills, 90210) to film stars like Corey Feldman (The Lost Boys) and David Arquette (Scream, Never Been Kissed). The flashback footage in Kid 90 feels fresh because it was all filmed before the rise of the internet and the invention of social media. The kids

are less guarded and more focused on showing off for their friends, not entertaining the masses. But, the impact of the footage is sadly familiar: being young and famous is a challenge most people cannot handle. There are certainly examples of people who rode the waves of fame and made it through successfully. Jodie Foster, who was Oscar nominated as a 12-year-old for Taxi Driver, won a Golden Globe last week for The Mauritanian. Drew Barrymore from E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial has her own talk show and successful production company. More recent examples like the Kardashian and Jenner women highlight young girls growing up on reality shows that turn that fame into global business success. Fridayland boasts our very own success story. Nichols Hills Elementary School alum Mason Cook, formerly Mason Cook Elston, is a local child actor that has forged his own very successful path in Holly-

wood. Mason Cook got his start as an extra on According to Jim in 2008. He spent the next few years doing guest starring roles on television shows including Grey’s Anatomy. In 2011, he landed his first lead film role in Spy Kids 4-D: All the Time in the World. The exposure helped him move into series regular roles on popular television shows like The Middle, Legends, and The Goldbergs. In 2015, Cook was nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award as Outstanding Performer in a Children’s Series for The Haunting Hour. Then in 2016, he was cast in his biggest role yet, as Ray DiMeo opposite Oscar nominee Minnie Driver on ABC’s Speechless. As Ray, Cook was comedy gold, demonstrating great comic timing and emotional range. The series ran for three seasons from 2016-2019. Now 21, Cook has been cast as the lead in a new movie filming this summer. He attributes much of his success to his parents Ted Elston and Kelsey Elston for providing him with the support he needed to make it as an actor. It sounds like the foundation for a long, successful career.

OCU online business program is among nation’s best

T

he U.S. News & World Report announced that Oklahoma City University once again has one of the best online business school programs in the U.S. The rankings placed OCU at 48th in the country for Best Online Business Programs (non-MBA), a category that includes a wide variety of specialized programs. The rankings specifically recognize OCU’s online master’s programs in energy management and energy legal studies. The Meinders School of Business has been on the list for seven consecutive years and is one of only two schools in Oklahoma to rank in the top 50. “The Meinders School of Business is honored to be recognized as a U.S. News Best Online Program and highly ranked once again,” said Graduate Energy Program Director Meredith A. Wegener. “The energy industry offers many opportunities in power generation, transportation, renewable resource development, fossil fuel transition and continuity, and windows to address key issues such as energy poverty and environmental change. This is an exciting time to earn a master’s degree focused on energy.” The Energy Legal Studies and Energy Management degrees provide rigorous, graduate-level education for professionals working in the energy industry. The energy-focused curriculum prepares graduates to succeed in leadership roles or begin their own company. The Meinders School of Business began offering live-streaming, hybrid courses in 2012 to out-of-state students and on-campus students who relocated or traveled frequently for work. The desire to complete the degree online has grown in recent years, and because of this, the two programs in energy will again be offered online in the 2021 fall semester. “Our energy master’s students not only seek a rigorous graduate degree, but also future success in impactful positions in many states throughout the country,” Wegener said. “Building upon our engagement with the energy industry and our mission to innovate, the graduate energy programs strive for success both in and out of the classroom as we work to help our graduates achieve their goals.” The full list and

methodology can be viewed on the U.S. News & World Report website. U.S. News ranked the schools on five general categories: student engagement, a measure of how well students can interact with their instructors and fellow classmates; student excellence; expert opinion, a survey of highranking academic officials in business; faculty credentials and training; and student services technology. U.S. News selects factors, known as ranking indicators, to assess each program in those categories. The Meinders School of Business ranks in the top 4.5 percent of business schools in the world and has earned accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB International). The M.S. Energy Management and M.S. Energy Legal Studies programs are also accredited by the American Association of Professional Landmen.

Vaccinations produce euphoria M

any of us “more mature” Fridaylanders have received our second vaccination shot. Everyone I have talked to is almost euphoric about that second shot. “It is like getting a Get Out of Jail Free card,” said one friend. Planning trips, going to performances, seeing friends, scheduling long overdue fundraisers, the end is near if we keep being careful. The Oklahoma Council of Public Affairs’ 25th annual Citizenship Award Dinner is set for Wednesday, April 28 at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum. This year’s keynote speaker is Jason Whitlock, American sports journalist, broadcaster, and radio personality. Other events will be popping up faster than we can put them on the calendar.

In MY Opinion by VICKI CLARK GOURLEY vicki@okcfriday.com

Sadly, we have lost many friends to the pandemic. Just last week, Bob Gilliland died. He is the latest in a long list of friends, movers and shakers. Since obituaries never mention COVID-19, it is hard to know just how many friends died from it. Last Thursday, Virgina Campbell died. Virginia was known worldwide as a gifted classical pianist, but she and Kyle Dillingham would have you clapping your hands and stomping your feet when they launched

into Dixieland or country and western duets. ••• The love, kindness, and generosity shown by so many is overwhelming. United Way of Oklahoma Executive Director Debby Hampton and fundraising drive chairmen Judy Love and Mike Turpen raised record amounts for its 50-plus agencies. The Regional Food Bank, Salvation Army and literally dozens of charities guided generous donors and volunteers on paths to try to meet the needs of all residents. Food, shelter, warm clothing and buildings, saved so many during the ice storm, New Year’s snowstorm and finally, the awful blizzard. OKC is incredible when there is a need. People step up and reach out when they hear someone needs help.

Keep wearing your mask when you are out and about. The end is near and you can stop it before more of our businesses have to close.

Sometimes, God gives you an Aaron By Walker Moore The Baptist Messenger Columnist If my math is correct, this is my 1,150th article. That makes 23 years of 50 articles a year. Most of those who have read these articles have been very complimentary. There have been a few “bumpy grumpies” who have misunderstood or disagreed with what I was trying to say, but overall, it has been a joyful journey. Yet there has been a weekly feeling of insufficiency when I sit down to write. If you ask me what my areas of giftedness are, I will list humor, preaching, seeing opportunities, loving people, optimism, vision and taking risks. Writing won’t even appear on the top 100. In my younger years, I was often asked, “What would you like to do?” I would respond, “I would like to be a writer,” and people would laugh. I start each week with a deep feeling of inadequacy for the task and end the week feeling the same. I just pray that when I get to heaven, the communications committee doesn’t ask me to write a weekly article. If they do, I will know I’m not in heaven. But I’m not the only one who has this feeling. Moses had insecurities about what God asked him to do; he felt insufficient. In Ex. 4:10-16, we see a wonderful dialogue in which Moses tries to tell God why he is not equipped to do what God has asked: “Moses said to the Lord, ‘Pardon your servant, Lord. I have never been eloquent, neither in

the past nor since you have spoken to your servant. I am slow of speech and tongue.’ “The Lord said to him, ‘Who gave human beings their mouths? Who makes them deaf or mute? Who gives them sight or makes them blind? Is it not I, the Lord? Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say.’ “But Moses said, ‘Pardon your servant, Lord. Please send someone else.’ “Then the Lord’s anger burned against Moses and he said, ‘What about your brother, Aaron the Levite? I know he can speak well. He is already on his way to meet you, and he will be glad to see you. You shall speak to him and put words in his mouth; I will help both of you speak and will teach you what to do. He will speak to the people for you, and it will be as if he were your mouth and as if you were God to him. But take this staff in your hand so you can perform the signs with it.’” Often when God calls you to a task, He doesn’t give you the ability to perform it. Instead, He gives you a person with the ability to walk alongside you. Ministry moves from being “me to we.” When the door opened for me to write an article, I thought I was only going to write one. Just like Moses, I listed all the reasons why I was ungifted, ill-equipped to write something that would be read by hundreds of thousands on a weekly basis. Just as God gave Aaron to Moses to help him fulfill his task, God gave me Marti Pieper. Marti

had seen something I had written and, being a writer, realized that I needed some help. She offered to edit my writing, giving me wise counsel as to the content and even removing words and sentences she thought might be offensive or not uplifting. Not only is she an editor, but she is an editor for dyslexic writers. She helps people like me who struggle to put words down on the page. Marti also understands my ministry as well as anyone else who walks this earth; she is a missionary. All five of her kids have scattered across the world at one time or another sharing the Gospel. She has a Master of Divinity degree from Southwestern Seminary, so she not only fixes my dangling participles, but she also checks my theology. We worked for more than a year on my parenting books, and it wasn’t until one Sunday when I was preaching in Georgia that we met in person. If you have been reading my articles or books and were blessed by them, know that Marti’s fingerprints are all over the things I write. God will send you whatever you need to fulfill the calling on your life. Sometimes He sends you the skill set and sometimes He will send an Aaron or even a Marti, a Roger or even a Bob. God has made you insufficient in many areas, and often, the things He calls you to do will come out of your insufficiency. Today, I ask that you pray not for me but for my partner Marti, because she walks alongside the insufficient.

COVID From Page 1 may have just been a part of history.’” Soon the word had spread about Rudy Gobert testing positive for COVID-19, she said. “By the next day, it seemed like the USA had changed as we knew it.” Her church, Quail Springs Baptist, closed its doors for in-person services that very next Sunday. Mask ordinances went into effect, restaurants and bars were closed, many schools went online and gyms closed. “No one knew quite sure what to do,” Carol said. The Schallers’ son’s destination wedding to Loretta Chapel in Santa Fe, N.M., was cancelled. Carol had to miss the funeral of a favorite aunt. Carol and John have received both doses of the vaccine and returned to church last Sunday. “As life slowly returns to ‘normal’ I’m asking myself what I really want to do and plan on spending time only on those things,” Carol said. For event planner Nicole Thomas, owner of Epic events, March 9 actually marked the introduction of COVID in her life and career. “'I was coming off the highs of another successful OKC Charity Fight Night benefiting the OKC Police Athletic League and a few days later, a very successful inaugural event for OU’s College of African and African-American Studies honoring Clara Luper and featuring Dr. Anita Hill as our guest speaker,” Nicole said. called on that Monday in March what they initially thought was to postpone a event scheduled for the Thursday. “Being that it was a 1,000person event for an upscale retirement community, I understood that, given what we knew at the time of this illness attacking the elderly, it was not the best timing for such a large scale event,” she said. “What I thought was a one-off postponement quickly turned into all of our company’s scheduled events spanning into November, canceling or postponing in that one week. A business that I had spent nearly the last 20 years of my life to build was suddenly completely gone in the course of five days. “I was dumbfounded, helpless, hopeless and completely and utterly heartbroken.” Through the pandemic, Nicole said she learned the meaning of the word grace. “I remember commiserating with a dear friend of mine, Sunny Cearley, about the bleak situation and she said something to me that will stick with me for the rest of my life and that I’ve leaned hard into over the

past 12 months — ‘Now is the time to give yourself grace.’ “As much as I’ve come to despise the term ‘unprecedented times,’ they truly are.” No one was prepared to face a worldwide pandemic. “We all just truly did the best we could to survive,” Nicole said. “As much as I’m ready for all this to be behind us, I am so eternally grateful for that one lesson I learned.” And, she’s looking forward to fall. “I predict the future of events in OKC are going to come back with a vengeance and we’ll experience a boom in the events and hospitality industries and I for one can’t wait!” Calm Waters’ Executive Director Erin Engelke found herself becoming a home school teacher to her three school-aged children, 15, 12 and 9. “I have never felt the pressure of ‘doing it all’ like I have this past year. I’ve felt overwhelming stress of running a nonprofit that exclusively exists to serve people face-to-face and having to rewrite all our programming to ensure children and fami-

lies still received much needed help,” she said. “Meanwhile, I’ve worried daily about my children’s education and have constant concern that I wouldn’t do a good enough job teaching them from home because work demanded so much of my time.” Erin worked from home for two months and returned to her office last June. Her husband continued to work, too. Thus, the kids either had to come to work with her and be home alone, which caused a lot of anxiety was well. “My children have definitely learned to be more self-sufficient and self-aware of what they do with their time (or don’t do!) and how that affects them mentally, as well as what motivates them,” she said. “These are such critical life skills and I’m grateful they are learning them now, versus later in life.” As a family, Erin said the Engelkes learned that they are capable of getting through tough times together. She said, however, they are mentally exhausted. “Having so much change thrown at you in a short

amount of time has the ability to wear you out,” she said. “But, my husband and I worked hard to maintain perspective for ourselves and our children, reminding each other that we still have so much to be grateful for.” Overnight, OKC Mayor David Holt said he went from someone who was liable to be all over the city and country to someone who barely got out of Quail Creek where he lives. In fact, he said he hasn’t been on a plane in a year, “which is pretty strange.” “My professional life changed dramatically as the priorities of the city changed,” he said. “A lot of things were put on the back burner as we focused on our health and safety.” David said he believes he took on an unique role as a mayor as he worked to ensure the city mitigated the spread of the virus and making sure that information was being shared with the public. “It was unlike anything an OKC mayor has faced in a century and the last mayor who faced a pandemic got the virus and resigned, so I certainly wanted to avoid that fate,” he said.

News of the World details news of the 1870s One universal truth about news is that everybody’s ears perk up at the prospect: good news, bad news,

political news, Kardashian news, sometimes even fake news. NEWS OF THE WORLD, a novel writ-

ten in 2016 by Paulette Jiles, shares that secret with the readers of the world. The book stores exploded with this tale of news of the 1870s in the land of the West. The book was immediately endorsed by readers and earned many awards. There could be debate as to whether the acclaim was about the events, the people, the suspense, danger and tenderness of the story or its amazing retelling. The fact that it was written five years ago and continues to be the rage may be getting a boost from the recent release of its major motion picture just in time for Oscars consideration. Tom Hanks, everbody’s favorite, brings life to

71-year-old Jefferson Kyle Kidd, who rides through the area with his readings of the happenings of the rest of the world to a paying audience. Kidd’s former life was that of a printer, but following the loss of his family and close of the Civil War, he strikes out to become a roaming personal presentation of what is going on in the world according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. The journey is as difficult as he had expected, but along the way Kidd becomes consumed with returning the white 14-yearold Johanna Leonloges to kin after she had been living four years with the Kiowa Indians who killed her father and mother and

ravaged their land. Johanna speaks no English and only knows her Kiowa name, Cicada and that of Turning Water, her father, and Three Spotted, her mother. The plot thickens. If you don’t read the book BEFORE you see this movie, you will read it afterwards. Former Jiles books include The Color of Lightning, 2009 and Sitting in the Club Car Drinking Rum and Karma-Kola. News of the World, (Paperback $7.95 on Amazon), Sitting in the Club Car Drinking Rum and Karma-Kola, Paperback $90 - $975 Bright Blue cover on Amazon. Oklahoma City’s Cinco de Mayo festival is poised to be one of the most exciting outdoor festivals held in 2021. The event, which has been growing in size over the last several years, has now moved to Scissortail Park to allow for an even broader audience in the centrally located downtown area. The festival, taking place on May 2, is free to attend and includes live music, folkloric dancing, activities for children, a parade of horses, and the crown-

ing of Miss Cinco de Mayo. The Oklahoma City Cinco de Mayo Festival is being organized by Scissortail Development Corporation (CDC). Scissortail President Robert Ruiz said it is one of the most authentic Cinco de Mayo celebrations in the United States, owing in large part to Oklahoma City’s “sister city” relationship to the city of Puebla. Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of Mexico’s victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla in 1862.
