Oklahoma City is masking up for at least two more weeks as the City Council voted to defer a vote on ending its mandate until its next meeting on April 13. Ward 4 Councilman Todd Stone and Ward 8 Councilman Mark Stonecipher jointly proposed an early expiration, citing dramatically improved local COVID-19 case data. The mask mandate, which has been in effect since July and which has been extended several times, is set to expire on April 30. Stonecipher said that an impetus for an early halt to the mandate comes from the U.S. Supreme Court which ruled that any intrusion on individual liberties should be minimized. The councilmen have been working with the Oklahoma City County Health Department to study data on the decline in COVID cases over the past month. “The one thing Todd and I have always said is that this should begin with science and end with science,” Stonecipher said. OCCHD COO Phil Maytubby said that less than 5 percent of the population has tested positive for COVID during the last two-week period. That equates to 10 cases per
100,000. But, he said, councilmen should also look at the rate of vaccination, plus the effectiveness of the shots against variants of the virus. Only about 50 percent of the residents over the age of 65 have received the vaccine. Another 34.7 percent of Oklahoma County residents have received one dose and 18.5 percent have been completely vaccinated. Stonecipher then made the motion to defer the issue for two weeks. Councilman James Cooper posed the question of how long does it take for a completely vaccinated person to reach complete immunity. Maytubby and other health department officials said that would take place two weeks after the second shot. Therefore, he said it could be summer before some people could reach that point. “I will not be supporting the deferral,” he said. The council also heard input from the public. Five residents called in — all of whom were in favor of keeping the mask mandate in place. Joel Nixon said it is the right and obligation of society to determine the correct thing to do. “Be responsible human beings and look out for each other,” he said. “It’s a very small ask — much like wearing pants in public.”

A review: ‘Diamonds’ dazzles “Pressure Makes Diamonds” Denise Lee Cowritten by Monique Midgette and Denise Lee Directed by Monique Midgette Musical Director Norman Williams By Franci Hart Theatre Critic Energetic! Jubilant! Fun! Denise Lee’s onewoman-show, “Pressure Makes Diamonds” brought live theater back to OKC with a flourish. “Pressure Makes Diamonds,” a show created just for Lyric, is a combination narrative, poetry and song that synopsizes Lee’s life as she turns 60, the year of the diamond. Set at the Myriad Gardens Water Stage, among the beautiful spring flowers and where the rising moon was visible, “Pressure Makes Diamonds” is a credit to Lyric’s commitment to quality theater even under pandemic conditions. The audience was screened before admission and seated socially distanced during the show. Safety was never an issue. More importantly, “Pressure Makes Diamonds” was superb! Lee’s story is full of comic self-revelation and some poignant reminders of the racial prejudice a woman of
color can face. The venue, Myriad Gardens Water Stage, provided an intimacy that Lee’s charisma played upon. She encouraged an audience member she saw mouthing the words to a song she was singing and ignored a heckler who was standing outside the stage area with grace and charm. The production would have been more than enough with just her singing. This lady sells everything she sings with a joy and energy that flows throughout the audience. The range of the music was impres-
sive. Everything from “Bridge Over Trouble waters,” to “I ain’t Gonna Let you Break My Heart Again” to “His Eye is on the Sparrow” was musically superior. Lee was ably accompanied by Norman Williams on keyboard, Lawrence “Peebody” Ferrell Jr., on drums, Brady Mosher on guitar and Clinton Trench on bass. The joy of “Pressure Makes Diamonds” cannot be overstated. This production plays at the Myriad Gardens through Saturday. It is a wonderful way to spend a spring evening.

Brett Hayes seeks District 1 school board seat Brett Hayes believes that every kid deserves a high-quality education and that public schools should be viewed as vital resources within communities across Oklahoma City. A proud public-school graduate from Oklahoma, Brett Hayes believes the values and community engagement of his public-school upbringing are what helped him become a contributing member of society and helped him choose a life dedicated to serving others. Brett earned his Bachelor of Science from the University of Central Oklahoma and Master of Social Work from the University of Oklahoma. Currently, Brett serves as the Director of Behavioral Health Integration at the Oklahoma Department of Human Services where he leads statewide efforts to improve behavioral health outcomes for children and families, firmly believing that a child’s success depends

greatly on access to equitable education, a nurturing family environment, and supportive communities. If elected, Brett envisions his term spent on the OKCPS School Board will centralize on three primary areas of focus. With a track record of successfully collaborating across child-serving state agencies, Brett firmly believes that he’s the right choice for the District 1 seat and aims to
bring his skillset to help support the OKCPS School Board • implement a recovery plan from the effects of COVID-19; • address feeder pattern issues; and, • impact the perception of OKCPS to become Oklahoma City’s first choice in schools. Brett believes that in order for many students to catch up from lost learning opportunities, the OKCPS will need step-up opportunities to accelerate their learning, while being sensitive to the trauma many students and families have and are still experiencing as a result of the pandemic. “Now is the time for OKCPS to prepare postpandemic strategies that help students to meet their full potential,” says Brett Hayes. “And I know I’m the right person to help ensure that our kids and families are recipients of the most comprehensive
school-based recovery plan from COVID-19.” Brett also believes in the nationally recognized strategy of Community Schools and feels like this is a key component to addressing the current feeder pattern issue that exist within district one. “A Community School is a model that coordinates relationships and resources through a public school to accelerate equitable outcomes in health, education and employment.” says Brett. “These schools become a welcoming hub of support, services and opportunities for children and families.” Lastly, Brett strongly believes in OKCPS and is a proud parent of three young kids, two of which are school aged and currently attend Quail Creek elementary. Brett was shocked to learn that many of his neighbors did not even consider OKCPS as a choice in their children’s schooling options and
Lori Bowman in the race for District 2 Dear Neighbor, I have spent the last three months knocking doors and hearing from you about the future of our children’s education and our public schools. If we have not met, I am Lori Bowman, a candidate for OKC Public School Board in District 2. I am a former U.S. Senate education policy advisor, nonprofit development consultant and, most importantly, a mom to two great kids who attend OKC public schools, Henry and Kate. I volunteered for OKC public schools because I cared about my children’s education, first as a PTA treasurer and later president. I never thought I would run for office, but I am committed to making a difference for our families and our children. As your OKCPS Board Member, I’ll vote like my own children’s education depends on it … because it does! I am committed to getting our students and teachers the best resources, helping our kids recover from COVID-19 learning loss, and remaining accountable to you, the taxpayer. The election for OKCPS School Board District 2 includes Nichols Hills, parts of The Village and northwest OKC extending to Hefner Parkway. You can learn more at my website Lori4OKCPS. com and if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call me at (405) 226-2102. On April 6, I would be honored with your trust and your vote. I will work hard for you, for our children, and for our community. – Lori (Paid Advertising)

that was the final factor in his decision to run for a school board seat. “I want OKCPS to be the first choice when families are deciding where to send their kids to school.” To achieve this aim, Brett says working in tandem with the surrounding community to better meet their needs is what will ultimately give OKCPS the credit it deserves to build on for
future successes. Brett lives in Oklahoma City with his husband and three children. He is a proud citizen of Choctaw Nation, cochair of the Children’s State Advisory Workgroup, graduate of Georgetown University's Leadership Academy, fellow of the Center for Juvenile Justice Reform, and a Certified Hope Trainer. Business Directory/Book Review
Oklahoma City FRIDAY, Friday, April 2, 2021, Page 9
Much to appreciate about Code The scope of this book can only be imagined by its title. But first, a word about the author, Walter Isaacson whose storied career is well known as chair of CNN, CEO of the Aspen Institute, editor of Time, professor of history at Tulane, and author of Leonardo da Vinci; The Innovators; Steve Jobs; Kissinger, A Biography. Code Breaker is more than a tribute to Jennifer Doudna and other notable scientists who have burst on our consciousness during the recent pandemic. It covers three revolutions of modern time beginning 100 years ago with the atom and quantum theory; next coming in the second half of the 20th Century, the information technology of the 1950s with the microchip, computers, internet. Enter the third revolution, that of joining life science and digital coding. The fascinating history of this journey gives life to the names and careers in raw science, as well as those involved in genomes, bacteria, viruses, cures and preventions of diseases and mutations in our lives. Stories and photographs follow these people who have worked and competed, confronted coronavirus, and present the modern day miracles that we meet. Their names are global and backgrounds range from growing up in poverty in
China to the hallowed labs of Stanford, Harvard and Cold Spring Harbor. Interwoven with these people, Jennifer Doudna’s guiding hand in CRISPR (Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palendromic Retreat) makes exciting reading as well as a look into the moral and ethnical problems that come from each new find. The genius, collaboration and competition of these heroes of science resulted in three competing companies, CRISPR Therapeutics, EDITAS Medicine, and Intellia Therapeutics. There are many sidetrips and the book almost begins to sound like science-fiction as Doudna ventures further into the arena of genotechnology. Mad scientists converge, discover, meld and uncover in a swirl that leads two of them to claim for a business maxim: “Don’t fight over divying up the proceeds until you finish robbing the stagecoach.” As CRISPRS RNA, press on, the making of a Nobel Prize in Chemistry began for Jennifer and Emmanelle
BOCC MINUTES
AND
Charpetier began. One of the many side trips even resulted in the artificial insemination of genes which worked resulted in the birth of twin girls. The plot really thickens here as ethics, choices, decisions and who makes them take center stage. Out of the chaos in 2020 Emmanelle Charpentier and Jennifer are awarded the 2020 prestigious Nobel Prize in Chemistry about “rewriting the circle of life.” This recognition was one more step in the world of science and a giant step forward for the role of women in this field. There is so much to appreciate in Code about the Doudna – Charpentier role in vaccines, and the COVID-19 break-through. The marvel and the people who made it happen are described with Isaacson’s own genius and style in the telling so that with awe and confidence we can anticipate the waves of the future in our amazing world. As it bounces from problems to solutions to dreams and visions of the future, the reader knows that if ever there is a must read, The Code Breaker, Jennifer Doudna, Gene Editing and the Future of the Human Race qualifies. Thank you, Full Circle Book Store, for sharing this book with FRIDAY readers.

ichols Hills Mayor Sody McCampbell Clements has an opponent for the first time since she was elected in 2009. Clements’ dedication to the city is illustrated by her votes on what is best for Nichols Hills, and agreeable discussions in council meetings until members reach a consensus. Each council member serves a term as mayor in a rotation. This year is the fourth time she has held that office. She is a dedicated volunteer and has spent her entire adult life serving on nonprofit boards. Nichols Hills residents need to go to the polls on Tuesday and elect Clements for another term on the council. Quail Creek resident Brett Hayes is a candidate for the Oklahoma City Public

SPRING
Fashion 2021
Oklahoma City FRIDAY, Friday, April 2, 2021, Page 13
Cindi Shelby, Pearl by Lela Rose With the past year we have all experienced, we’re ready to get dressed up and go out! There is an optimism in the air and it’s reflected in the broad variety of Spring/Summer styles. Floaty, feminine dresses and skirts are made comfy with flats and sneakers. Every fashion resource is talking about the cropped, wide leg silhouette and whether it’s called culottes, gauchos or simply a cropped pant, it’s a must have for any fashion devotee. The conversation in prints is about florals, gingham and stripes. Trending in colors are sorbet pastel tones, bright yellow, hot pink and white is the quintessence of Summer style. There’s something for everyone and it is definitely time to have fun with fashion again!
Krista Souther, Krista Anne’s Boutique The only thing I can say right now is less about current trends and more about what fashion can invoke for us. Right now, the focus is joy. What we wear has the ability to spark joy in us and in others - and that is powerful - and needed! So, go out, wear the color that makes you smile, try that new style you liked, but thought you weren't bold enough to wear and enjoy all of the beauty around you that God has created!
Jane Webb Childress CK & Co. Mood Boost – After an overwhelming 12 months, the consumer is focusing on the positives and looking to her wardrobe as a way to inject fun and excitement through bright colors. Think feminine shoulder detail tops, and novelty printed blouses. The full-leg pant is gaining traction even though we still have skinny leg jeans and pants.

Cy Prigmore - Fashion Tips
No. 1 Rule: “Always have an accessory: No outfit can stand alone!” Tip: Sunglasses in the lapel pocket, hat, pocket square. . . “dress traditionally with one trendy accessory.” Instant Style: Too hot to wear a suit jacket? Tip: Dress up a button-down shirt with a pocket square. A pop of color adds interest and style to any outfit — ditch the jacket. Cy’s Motto: “When in doubt, wear navy.”
Charlet Sauls, Boutique One It's time to ditch the sweats for some cute Spring looks and there is so much to choose from and it's about COLOR! Sunshine yellow, citrus orange and pinks are the strongest but the tranquil teals and blues are present and always our favorite. White- it's everything, in clothes, shoes and handbags. Prints: big and small, floral and tie dye are on the scene and who doesn't love a nautical stripe, even camouflage and animal prints are still on board. Also trending this season are the granny-chic dresses and tops with ruffles and pouf-sleeves they're such a fun feminine look... My suggestion is to wear what makes you feel happy. Fashion is always a great way to add fun to our lives.

Summer on the Farm Camp registration opens in April Enrollment for Keystone Adventure School and Farm’s unique summer camps opens the week of April 5. Summer on the Farm is summer the way summer should be for children: lots of time exploring the outdoors exploring ponds and creeks, an organic garden and caring for farm animals. Kids can’t wait to come to Keystone for the summer, and all camps offer both daily and weekly options. Summer on the Farm is a fiveweek camp for Kindergarten-5th that runs from June 1-July 2. Campers can enjoy summers with us for one week, two weeks, or even all five weeks! Special attention will be paid this summer to safety protocols. On the third day, He rose again from the dead From Luke 23:32-24:12: Two others — criminals — were also led away to be executed with him. When they arrived at the place called The Skull, they crucified him there, along with the criminals, one on the right and one on the left. Then Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, because they do not know what they are doing." And they divided his clothes and cast lots. The people stood watching, and even the leaders kept scoffing: "He saved others; let Him save Himself if this is God's Messiah, the Chosen One!" The soldiers also mocked Him. They came offering Him sour wine and said, "If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself!" An inscription was above Him: THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS. Then one of the criminals hanging there began to yell insults at Him: "Aren't You the Messiah? Save Yourself and us!" But the other answered, rebuking him: "Don't you even fear God, since you are undergoing the same punishment? We are punished justly, because we're getting back what we deserve for the things we did, but this man has done nothing wrong." Then he said, "Jesus, remem-
ber me when You come into Your kingdom!" And He said to him, "Truly I tell you, today you will be with Me in paradise." The Death of Jesus It was now about noon and darkness came over the whole land until three, because the sun's light failed. The curtain of the sanctuary was split down the middle. And Jesus called out with a loud voice, "Father, into your hands I entrust My spirit." Saying this, he breathed his last. When the centurion saw what happened, he began to glorify God, saying, "This man really was righteous!" All the crowds that had gathered for this spectacle, when they saw what had taken place, went home, striking their chests. But all who knew him, including the women who had followed him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things. The Burial of Jesus There was a good and righteous man named Joseph, a member of the Sanhedrin, who had not agreed with their plan and action. He was from Arimathea, a Judean town, and was looking forward to the kingdom of God. He approached Pilate and asked for Jesus's body. Taking
it down, he wrapped it in fine linen and placed it in a tomb cut into the rock, where no one had ever been placed. It was preparation day, and the Sabbath was about to begin. The women who had come with Him from Galilee followed along and observed the tomb and how His body was placed. Then they returned and prepared spices and perfumes. And they rested on the Sabbath according to the commandment. Resurrection Morning On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came to the tomb,
bringing the spices they had prepared. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb. They went in but did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were perplexed about this, suddenly two men stood by them in dazzling clothes. So the women were terrified and bowed down to the ground. "Why are you looking for the living among the dead?" asked the men. "He is not here, but he has risen! Remember how He spoke to you when He was still in Galilee, saying, 'It is necessary the the Son of Man be betrayed into the hands of
sinful men, be crucified, and rise on the third day'?" And they remembered his words. Returning from the tomb, they reported all these things to the Eleven and to all the rest. Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them were telling the apostles these things. But these words seemed like nonsense to them, and they did not believe the women. Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. When he stooped to look in, he saw only the linen cloths. So he went away, amazed at what had happened.
