Beasley’s recreation of painting featured in People By Rose Lane Editor When asked what they did during quarantine, only 12 people in the world can say they recreated a historic work of art and had the photo of it published in People Magazine. Fridayland native Bryan Beasley can. According to PBS, the challenge began with a Dutch Instagram account, Tussen Kunst & Quarantaine (or Between Art and Quarantine). Later, the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles took the idea and ran with it. Bryan, the son of Fridaylanders Sherry and Lee Beasley, graduated from Bishop McGuinness in 1992 and the NYU Film School in 1996. He landed a job on a movie and moved to Los Angeles on Halloween of 1996. He eventually married Coco, who
works in finance. They have two daughters, Hazel, 3, and Layla, 6. A photographer and a director of documentaries, Bryan said when the coronavirus hit, his work dried up. “All of a sudden I was teaching school,” he said. It took about two weeks for the schools to get virtual learning up and in good order. “During those two weeks, I was looking for anything to do something creative,” Bryan said. Several of his Facebook friends suggested he take part in the “masterpiece makeover,” too. With Layla as his “art director,” Bryan’s first attempt at reinventing a historic painting was of Édouard Manet’s “Jeanne (Spring).” Layla was See PEOPLE, Page 11

Smithsonian Recommends deadCenter
L
ast week, Smithson‑ ian Magazine listed Oklahoma City’s dead‐ Center Film Festival as one of eight virtual film festivals worth attend‐ ing this summer. There are 3,000 active film festivals, so being considered in the top eight by any meas‐ ure is a huge deal. Being singled out for our first ever virtual film festival is particu‐ larly exciting because it opens the festival up to a global audience. To date, deadCenter has sold All Access passes to people in eight for‐ eign countries and 26 states. deadCenter’s transi‐ tion online allows the festival to offer more films and film related classes, filmmakers Q&As, celebrity discus‐ sions, and panels than ever before. And, extending the dates of the festival to eleven days, June 11‐21, ensures that passhold‐ ers will have plenty of time to watch it all. Movies are obviously the biggest draw of any film festival. This year, deadCenter will pres‐ ent 140 new films, including the largest selection of Oklahoma made films. Eddie, the emotional documen‐ tary about OSU Hall of Fame coach Eddie Sut‑ ton, will be joined by Billie, a searing portrait of legendary jazz singer Billie Holiday; And With Him Came the West, a look at how Wyatt Earp shaped his
own legacy; and Love and Fury, Sterlin Harjo’s exploration of Native American artists. To celebrate the 20th anniversary, dead‐ Center is hosting a series of film reunions for films made in Okla‐ homa. Gray Frederick‑ son will lead a discus‐ sion about The Out‑ siders. Famke Janssen will talk about her debut feature Bringing Up Bobby. The Erwin Brothers’ will revisit their recent Christian blockbuster I Can Only Imagine. And, several deadCenter filmmakers will gather cast and crew members to remi‐ nisce about favorite projects, including Bradley Beesley’s Sweethearts of the Prison Rodeo, Melissa Scaramucci’s Making Arrangements, Beau Leland and Kevin Ely’s Rainbow Around the Sun, and my own hilari‐ ous comedy, Crazy Enough. On the education side, deadCenter is partnering with the Oklahoma Film + Music Office to offer twelve introductory film class‐ es on every aspect of the filmmaking process. The classes will be led by local film industry
professionals, including screenwriting with Matt Payne, location scouting with Alison Naifeh Dick, stop motion animation with Kyle Roberts, and vir‐ tual auditions with casting director Ricki Masler. deadCenter will partner with Metro Technology Centers to host a film school spe‐ cific to high school stu‐ dents during the festi‐ val called deadCenter University. Registration is open until June 1 at deadcenterfilm.org/dcu niversity. This is just the tip of the iceberg. deadCenter will also host screen‐ play workshops, a screenplay table read, podcasts, film panels, and a distribution forum on opening weekend. Then starting on Monday, June 15, deadCenter will launch a Virtual Reality Cine‐ ma; an Arts in OKC track featuring dance classes, concerts, and art activities; and dead‐ Center PIVOT: a week‐ long series of discus‐ sions featuring success‐ ful transition stories across different indus‐ tries. deadCenter is cele‐ brating the 20th anniversary of our award‐winning film festival this June. I hope you will join us. For information on how to sponsor, buy passes, check out films, or review the schedule, please visit deadcenter‐ film.org.

You will not see a full house in the theater or a packed gallery this summer, but you will be able to see great works of art and film in the safest way possible.” The Museum will reopen with exhibitions on all three floors. In addition to “POP Power from
Warhol to Koons,” “Dale Chihuly: Magic & Light,” “Postwar Abstrac‐ tion” and “From the Golden Age to the Moving Image” are all on view. “POP Power from Warhol to Koons” includes more than 100 works on paper and 10 sculptures by the biggest names in Pop Art including innovators such as Roy Lichtenstein and Claes Oldenburg and popular and provocative artists like James Rosenquist, Robert Indiana, Keith Haring, Damien Hirst, Takashi Murakami and Julian Opie. During the temporary closure, the Museum debuted virtual screenings and plans to continue these screen‐ ings through mid‐June. The Samuel Roberts Noble Theater will open
with strict capacity limits and addi‐ tional social distancing protocols in place starting in mid‐June. The Museum Cafe will remain closed until further notice. Museum memberships begin at $50. To learn more about member‐ ship, visit okcmoa.com/member‐ ship.

Graduates: Walk boldly ahead By Tom Cole Congressman Dear Graduates, As the school year comes to a close and graduation season begins, I am thinking of the many high school and college seniors who will be celebrating their achievements differently than they expected. Although the coronavirus crisis has canceled and postponed many traditional commencement ceremonies, that should not lessen the sense of great pride and joy felt by this year’s graduates. And I want to extend my deepest congratulations and best wishes. Graduating means that you have successfully scaled and overcome a series of challenges, and you have proven you
are ready and prepared to advance beyond. Every graduate deserves to be honored, and I hope you will take the time to relish all that you have worked toward and accomplished, celebrating with your family and loved ones who are just as proud of all that you’ve achieved and who will continue to cheer you on as the next chapters of your life are written. Though we are living through unusual times that caused senior year to take some unexpected turns, I want to challenge you to look on this moment in time as a weigh station – not the final destination – in the tremendous and unique journey of your life. In the days to come, I also want to challenge you to walk boldly ahead with your eyes and mind wide open to the endless opportunities and possibilities that await you. Indeed, when I think back on the years since I graduated high school and college, I realize that most of my
regrets are related to opportunities I didn’t seize, chances I didn’t take and service I didn’t render. Nearly all those mistakes happened because I was either afraid to take the risk, or I chose not to take the time to complete some worthwhile task. So, I urge the graduates, when you confront something, be willing to run the risk and be willing to take the time to see it through all the way to the end. Finally, whether you plan to pursue more formal education or not, I challenge you to become a lifelong learner. No matter what stage or season in which life finds you, I encourage you to always leave room for personal growth. With that, I wish you good luck and Godspeed. May your journey be interesting as I am sure it shall. But more importantly, may you find the peace and happiness that each and everyone one of you deserve. Congratulations, Graduating Class of 2020!
