DOWNTOWN

From Page 1

Co-Chairman Ellard added, “The leaders we honor this year have helped shape and mold today’s downtown for all of Oklahoma City to enjoy. Whether a person lives, works or is visiting downtown, you can see their mark on making the greater downtown area an exciting core to our city.”

The Dean A. McGee Award recognizes individuals for a lifetime of contributions, ensuring that Oklahoma City has a strong, energetic core. The award is named after Dean A. McGee, an Oklahoma City business leader who led efforts to construct the Myriad Gardens and was passionate about developing downtown as a gathering place for future generations.

Gary Brooks, the 2023 Dean A. McGee Award recipient, demonstrated sheer tenacity to preserve downtown’s first skyscraper built in 1931. In January 2017, Brooks and partner Charlie Nicholas acquired and developed the 1.1 million square foot high-rise First National Center into 193 downtown apartments, 146 hotel rooms, 600-space parking garage and 20,000 square feet of retail, including fine-dining restaurants. The transformed First National opened in March 2022, where he resides with his wife. Previously, Brooks and his company Cornerstone Development founded in 2008 invested, purchased and developed many commercial and residential real estate properties in under-utilized and depressed downtown areas.

The Stanley Draper Award is presented to an outstanding non-

profit staff member, volunteer or non-elected government employee who has made an enduring impact on downtown. The award is named after city visionary Stanley Draper who inspired everyone to dream impossible dreams and was known as the country’s greatest “city builder.”

Wiley Williams, the 2023 Stanley Draper Award honoree, represented public service with a work ethic that does not know the word “no,” for the purpose of moving a city forward. As Assistant Municipal Counselor for the City of Oklahoma City, Williams was involved in dozens of economic development projects to enhance the city for future generations. Most notably were the redevelopment of the historic First National Center built in 1931 and negotiations with securing the Oklahoma City Thunder NBA team. He began his career with the City of Oklahoma City in 1994.

The Neal Horton Award is presented to a visionary who sparks a renaissance in a downtown area. It is named after Neal Horton, who dreamed of revitalizing the decaying red brick warehouses east of downtown into an entertainment, dining and retail district, known today as Bricktown.

Charles Nicholas (posthumous), the 2023 Neal Horton Award honoree, founded and owned the company behind the redevelopment of the First National Center, downtown’s most prominent historical 33-story skyscraper. His passion and dedication to preserving this important piece of downtown history was instrumental in today’s success of the First National Center. As he cherished each day when he was able to better communities with his loved ones, he has similarly bettered

downtown for the many Oklahoma City families who cherished the First National Center for generations and will pass on this family tradition to future generations. His sons Alex and Colin are to accept the award on his behalf.

The President’s Award is presented to an association or individual recipient who made a significant positive impact in the downtown area beyond the criteria for the three other award categories. This award is presented on a case-by-case basis, and is not an annual award.

Jane Jenkins, the 2023 President’s Award honoree, developed a strong non-profit organization to ensure the greater downtown area flourishes for businesses, residents and visitors. As the previous President and CEO of Downtown Oklahoma City Partnership for 14 years, Jenkins stabilized and grew the organization from a three-person staff to 12 urban place management professionals who are focused on each aspect of downtown, including a proper balance among commercial, residential, retail, green space and entertainment, and launched the Green Team to keep downtown safe, clean and a welcoming place to work, live and visit. She now leads Jane Jenkins Resources, a program development firm.

Presented by Downtown Oklahoma City Partnership, tickets to the Dean A. McGee Awards are available to the public. Advance reservations are required and may be made by calling (405) 235-3500 or emailing Phi@DowntownOKC.com. Individual tickets are $350 and a special pricing for Emerging Leaders under the age of 40 is $500 for two people. Corporate tables and sponsorships are also available.

“This is a great benefit for our ASTEC scholars for now and for many years to come. We are so grateful to everyone who made it possible because these students deserve the best,” said ASTEC’s Board Chair Debra Murray.

When asked about the event, ASTEC’s School Foundation President and Quail Creek Bank President, Doug Fuller said, “I am a big believer in ASTEC Charter

The soccer field project had many partners, including FSB Architects + Engineers, Miller-Tippens Construction, Debi Martin and the City of Oklahoma City, District 1 County Commissioner Carrie Blumert and her team, Larry Wallis with Newman Development, Signs & Wonders, Fields and Futures, and Cimarron Construction Company.

A grant from the Margaret Annis Boys Trust at the Oklahoma City Communities Foundation provided the trees planted around the field.

ASTEC Charter Schools began in 2000 as Oklahoma's first

start-up charter school with 100 students.

Today’s ASTEC includes a new state-ofart elementary school and over 1,300 students in grades PreK-12.

Due to the high demand for enrollment at the elementary school, the construction of a new elementary wing is underway that will add 300 plus additional seats.

The project is sched-

uled to be completed in the fall of 2024.

Exciting plans are underway for a new middle school and high school to be built near the elementary school at 2600 General Pershing Boulevard.

Saxon student - Samuel Jun, Oklahoma City, Casady School, U.S. Air Force Academy.

“These programs are a win-win for everyone,” said OMRF Vice President of Human Resources Courtney Stevens Greenwood. “Every summer, our labs benefit from these students’ youthful energy and perspective. For the students, it’s a chance to obtain meaningful biomedical research experience while seeing how their efforts contribute to the next amazing discovery.”

Fleming and Langston scholars arrive in early June and work with the foundation’s scientists on research projects in areas including autoimmune disease, osteoarthritis, cancer and cardiovascular disease. At the end of the eight-week program, they will author scientific papers and deliver presentations to the foundation’s research staff.

The Fleming Scholars program,

Leadership changes are announced at DRG

founded in 1956, is named for the British scientist who discovered penicillin and in 1949 came to Oklahoma City to dedicate OMRF’s first building.

OMRF Vice President of Clinical Affairs Judith James, M.D., Ph.D., and Distinguished Career Scientist Rod McEver, M.D., started their research careers as Fleming Scholars.

The Langston Scholars program, now in its third year, aims to diversify biomedical research in the state. It is a partnership between OMRF and LU, Oklahoma’s only historically Black college or university. Following the internship, Langston students may continue working with their OMRF mentors on ongoing research projects.

The Saxon program compresses an intensive summer internship into three to four weeks. John Saxon III, M.D., a Muskogee physician and OMRF board member since 2000, established the program to honor his father, a West Point graduate who taught at the U.S. Air Force Academy and was a career Air Force pilot.

After the class announcement, a legacy gift of $2 million was announced by T. Boone Pickens Foundation officer Jay Rosser. This testamentary gift from the late Pickens, a 2003 inductee of the Oklahoma Hall of Fame, helped establish the namesake museum in the former Mid-Continent Life Insurance Building in the Heritage Hills neighborhood in 2001.

“Where there’s a will, get in it!” said Rosser. “Boone understood the role the Oklahoma Hall of Fame plays in preserving the history of this great state and the great people,” said Rosser.

The new honorees “all came from humble beginnings, they came from small towns in Oklahoma, and that’s what makes this state truly, truly special.”

“He made us promise to hold high standards, reminding me that we couldn’t dream too big,” said Rich. “It was truly a gift to know Mr. Pickens and his legacy

is one that I proudly honor.”

The other honorees of the 96th class of the Oklahoma Hall of Fame include Dwight Adams, Edmond, creator of the National DNA Database System; John A. “Rocky” Barrett, Jr., Shawnee, chairman of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation; J. Mays, Maysville, celebrated automobile designer; Madeline Manning Mims, Tulsa, Olympic gold medalist and the first woman to break two minutes in the 800 meters; Barry Pollard, M.D., Waukomis, neurosurgeon and cattleman; and posthumously, Mary Golda Ross, Park Hill, the first Native American female aerospace engineer.

For more information about the Oklahoma Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on Nov. 16, purchasing tickets, or making a nomination to the Oklahoma Hall of Fame, contact Brenda Schwartz, director of honoree and board relations at (405) 5233209 or bbs@oklahomahof.com.

Leadership notes

Announcement is product of relationships, reputation

What an exciting day it was last month when Pratt & Whitney announced they are investing $255 million in a new 845,000-square-foot sustainment facility. This center will serve as a hub for depot operations for the company’s military engines, which power several aircraft stationed or maintained at Tinker.

The decision to expand oper-

ations at Tinker is a testament to the strong bond Oklahoma City forged over the years with the Department of Defense and the prime contractors. This project developed over several years of working with the company to understand how Oklahoma City could best align with their strategic goals.

Every economic development project differs by timeline, but they all thrive on relationships. Announcements like this one take hard work, patience and, above all else, partnership.

The Chamber is fortunate to have partners like the City of Oklahoma City, The Alliance for Economic Development of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma County, Oklahoma Department of Commerce and the Oklahoma Aeronautics Commission, who understand the value and importance the aerospace industry has on our city and state.

I want to give a special recognition to the City of Oklahoma City and the Alliance for Economic Development. Their work on the site for this project,

Dear Wise Elder: My friend's spouse passed away recently; she was only 67. Now that the memorial services are over and family has flown back to their homes, I'm not quite sure what to do or how to help. I don't want to intrude, but

Dear Friend: This is a great opportunity to text an invitation for the two of you to meet for lunch tomorrow. (Yes, you need to set a specific time and place.) Your friend has had to make so many decisions in the past few days. He needs someone to eat with and

former water trust land, was fundamental to our success.

The aerospace industry is recognized as the second largest industry in Oklahoma, thanks in large part to the nearly 300 aerospace companies in and around Oklahoma City. With almost 45,000 workers and an estimated $7.2 billion in goods and services produced annually from Oklahoma City companies, this economic engine we call aerospace continues to soar to even greater heights in OKC.

someone else to make the decision where and when. If he declines, reach out again in 4 or 5 days. Perhaps offer to drive by and pick him up. Suggest that it will be a quiet meal together and you won't ask him to talk. Don't stop being a friend just because his spouse died or because he didn't feel up to company this time. Friends don't leave. Friends hang in there when times are tough; being there with someone is more than talking.

Six women inducted into Hall of Fame

The Oklahoma Commission on the Status of Women (OCSW) inducted seven women into the Oklahoma Women’s Hall of Fame (OWHOF) and presented four special awards.

“Whether positively elevating the status of women and girls, opening new frontiers for women, or achievements in her professional work the 2023 class of OWHOF is special. We are honored to recognize these women with such a high honor for women of our great state,” said Commissioner and 2023 OWHOF Chairman Emmalee Barresi.
