Grease is still the word through Sunday

Vaccine called ‘clear path’ out By Elyssa Gerstel Student Intern Dr. James Kirk, an infectious disease doctor with SSM Health with over two decades of experience, believes there is only one way to ensure that individuals are protected from COVID-19: getting the vaccine. After two years of a tumultuous and deadly virus, Dr. Kirk said, “If people were going to proceed and get on the road of being vaccinated, the way we would like everyone to be vaccinated; then I think we could look forward to a return to a ‘more normal’ existence.” Currently, only 36.6% of the population is vaccinated in Oklahoma according to state statistics. Compared to states like Vermont which has 63.3% of the total population vaccinated, it is clear that Oklahoma is falling
behind the average. Additionally, the new strains of the virus such as the Delta Variant, pose a real threat. “If we continue to stack up kindling in terms of unvaccinated people, it is possible that we could see a resurgence in the fall,” Dr. Kirk said. Dr. Kirk said he wants to make sure people know that he is not predicting anything, but is using his knowledge and the data to the best of his professional ability to look to the future. New variants of the virus have the potential to be contagious, including the United Kingdom and South African variants. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the current vaccine is likely to prevent death from the new variants. “All COVID-19 vaccines currently available in the United States are effective at preventing
COVID-19 as seen in clinical trial settings,” the CDC said. Despite research about the vaccine’s proven effectiveness against the coronavirus, as well as the CDC’s recommendation that everyone should get the vaccine, many Oklahomans are still hesitant to get the vaccine. While there are a myriad of reasons why state residents are choosing not to get vaccinated, there seems to be some recurring themes. “Some people are frightened, they feel that this is a new technology that has evolved too quickly,” Dr. Kirk said. “The truth of the matter is these vaccines and technologies like the messenger RNA vaccine, really have been a work in progress since the early 2000s, with the original SARS outbreak.” Dr. Kirk recognizes those

GREASE From Page 1 The staging is brilliant and leaves you thinking this show should have always been performed on a football field. All the seating is in the west grandstand, completely shady. The slight summer breeze is better than air conditioning. The sweet, innocent Sandy (Sydney Jones, BFA University of Oklahoma) reconnects with Danny (Joe Caskey, Oklahoma City University) at Rydell High School. Only instead of the respectful boy she met in the summer, he is the bad boy leader of a gang. The Pink Ladies girl’s gang take Sandy under their wing. Their leader, Rizzo, (Gabby Rae Jimenez B.M. University of Central Oklahoma) is the loose, sexy opposite of Sandy. That’s about it for the plot. But you go for the 20 fabulous rock n’ roll songs, not the story line. Directed by Lyric’s Producing Artistic Director Michael Baron and Jim Reynolds,

The vaccine is free and readily available at most drugstores, hospitals and other locations in the Oklahoma City area. “Over 600,000 Americans have died of COVID,” said Dr. Kirk.

“I think it’s personally on all of us to do our share … we have a clear path out of this dilemma.” One misconception about this pandemic is that many Americans believe that COVID-19 is now a virus of the past. “The pandemic is still smoldering and burning in that population who have not been vaccinated. That’s our concern,” Dr. Kirk says. While COVID-19 numbers are currently down, Dr. Kirk still said

19 cases in Oklahoma. “We do have a clear way out of this. We have a clear choice,” says Dr. Kirk. “If people continue to get vaccinated, we will stay on a good path.”

win at Memphis 901 FC last Saturday. The Greens (1-4-4) came out on the front foot, creating several chances in the opening 15 minutes, with Frank Lopez putting one in the back of the net in
the 12th minute only for the referee to disallow it due a handball. Just six minutes later, the ball was in the back of the net again, and this time the goal stood. Zach Ellis-Hayden whipped in a cross from the right wing to Bijev, who headed the ball past Memphis goalkeeper Brady Scott. Despite the sustained pressure from Memphis in the second half, OKC held on to earn its first win of the season and first overall since July 17, 2020. Students
Our All Stars describe their most impactful teachers Compiled by Elyssa Gerstel Student Intern PUTNAM CITY NORTH HIGH SCHOOL Mary Beth Henson, Film Production “Ms. Henson opened up my world to the life of film. She taught me so much that the class doesn’t seem like a class anymore. It’s something I enjoy doing outside of school.” - Fernando Escalante Julie Smiley Foster, Biomedical Innovation, Anatomy and Physiology “Mrs. Foster constantly movitvates and supports her students. I admire her equisitve teacher qualities that leave a lasting impression upon all her students. She can be characterized as caring and respectable. I can truly say that she has equipped with all the necessary skills needed for the rest of my academic journey.” - Suniye Gharajeh Brooke Fonzi, Psychology “Mrs. Fonzi made her psychology class so innovative that it just clicked for me. I am planning to major in psychology at OU and going on to become a psychiatrist. I am forever grateful to Mrs. Fonzi for being so passionate about psychology and sharing that passion with me.” - Savannah Lindley Brooke Fonzi, Psychology “Ms. Fonzi was the first person to ever remind me that grades are not the most important thing in life. Her teaching showed me that you don’t have to follow a certain criteria and that so long as you learn the material, how you learn it doesn’t matter.” - Sivia Theresa Mollie Brue, AP European History “From the moment I stepped into her class-
room it became apparent that Ms. Brue loved her students like she would her own kids. The way she successfully taught such a challenging course, but was still there for students in the their time of need inspired me to get into education.” - Connor Attebery “Ms. Brue was also coach Brue back in 2018. I had her at the beginning and end of my day five days a week. What makes Ms. Brue special is how she pushed me to be who I am today and I genuinely could never thank her enough for doing so.” - Myla Kenney Michelle Hopper, Spanish “Ms. Hopper is a great teacher and an even better friend. She introduced to many oppurtunities such as ‘LDI,’ which is a leadership camp.” - Philip McIntosh Carmen Pence (Hefner Middle School), Yearbook, Physical Education “She taught me that teachers are not just there to guide but to care for each and every student. She has given me unconditional support even as I am a senior now, and I had her four years ago.” -Rylee Kysar Michelle Nguyen (James L. Dennis), English as a Second Language “I struggled when I was younger in school. The subject did not click for me. Ms. Nguyen really pushed me to learn. Without her, I wouldn’t be who I am today.” - Tommy Pham HERITAGE HALl Nicholas Carter, English “I had Mr. Carter for Honors English during my freshman year. After we took a school trip together to Italy my sophomore year, he quickly became a mentor. I felt like I could
takl to him whenever I needed it. He has shown me what it’s like to be a passionate leader and learner.” - Blake Oliver John Powell, U.S. History, Modern and European History “Dr. Powell has been a mentor in my life since I first had him as a teacher. He has always had my best interest in mind and always does everything to help me be successful. Perhaps more importantly, Dr. Powell has always showed me guidance on how to be a better man.” - Max Henley Chard William Chris Hamel, U.S. History “Dr. Hamel’s role in my school experience is irreplaceable. He has acted as my main connection to a prosperous future, as well as teaching me the value of a worldly education. Without him, I never would have found my passion for diplomacy, and for that I credit my success to him.” - Lilly Roberson “Dr. Hamel taught me the value of history in learning the past to understand the present and implications of patterns for the future. More that though, he reinvigorated the love of history I carry to this day.” - Jasmyne Le “Mr. Hamel had a lifelong influence on any student he knows. He has continually helped me to examine and master my own ideological values out of a genuine love for my political passion. He has made me and my colleagues better writers, thinkers and people with his undying for teaching.” - Sam King “Not only has Dr. Hamel taught me how to express my belief but, he has also taught to form them. In the two years I’ve been lucky enough to have him as my teacher and Model United Nations advisor, he has singlehandedly served as the
biggest influence in the development of my worldview.” - Elizabeth Siatkowski “Dr. Hamel had us write ‘document-based questions’ our entire junior year. His class helped me learn the correct way to write an essay. He is a fun person to be around and gives really great life lessons. I’ll miss him and his lessons next year.” - Tia Brown Dylan Sullivan, Finance “Financial education is arguably one of the most important subjects in school because it can be directly applied to life. Mr. Sullivan does a great job of preparing us for the financial responsibilities we will soon have.” - Kyann Woods Caleb Stricklen, Algebra II “One of the main things I learned from Mr. Stricklen is that you can’t take everything seriously. Education is important, of course, but your mental health and enjoyment of life are far more important.” - John Anthony Claybon Corinne Crepin, French “She has allowed me to expand my interest in languages and she has introduced me to opportunities like the Franco-American Fellows Program.” - Adelya Gosmanova

o you have an idea that would make a great television series? Do you have a story that you’ve always wanted to tell? Now is your chance to see how it’s done. The seventh annual SeriesFest starts this weekend and runs through July 11, 2021. SeriesFest is an annual television pilot festival based in Denver, Colorado, dedicated to showcasing innovative episodic content and championing artists at the forefront of such independent programming. This year’s festival will be virtual, making all of their outstanding panels and programs available worldwide from seriesfest.com. One of the most popular features of SeriesFest is their annual Pitch-A-Thon. The Pitch-A-Thon program provides independent content creators the opportunity to participate in an exclusive live pitch session with top television, new media, and digital executives in hopes of moving their unproduced projects forward. Each participant will have five minutes to pitch their projects live with the winner of the Pitch-AThon receiving a cash prize. The Oklahoma Film + Music Office is the presenting sponsor of Pitch-A-Thon. The OF+MO works diligently to attract television series to Oklahoma because they offer
more long-term employment than individual films. The Pitch-A-Thon sponsorship puts them in contact with the creatives and executives that can bring those television projects to Oklahoma. This year, the seven series to be pitched include the crime drama Hudson City, superhero romance Super Girlfriend, dark comedy Damsel, medical drama Painkillers, small-town comedy Honkers, comic book drama American Way, and club kid drama Emmett Grey. “The Pitch-A-Thon is one of our most exciting and watched events each year at SeriesFest,” according to SeriesFest cofounder and CEO Randi Kleiner. “My favorite part is the community and support that is given to the very courageous creators who are pitching their ideas live. We are so grateful to have the Oklahoma Film + Music Office once again help amplify this event.” In addition to the Pitch-A-Thon, SeriesFest offers a wide range of programming, from creative workshops, innovation talks, panels, and table

OKC Zoo, OG&E host new season of Read for Adventure The OKC Zoo and Botanical Garden is thrilled to celebrate the fifth season of its statewide literacy program, Read for Adventure, and invite Oklahoma families to experience the unique benefits of this program. Sponsored by OG&E, Read for Adventure introduces participants to the importance of protecting monarch butterflies and other pollinators as well as native habitat through an original children’s book, Juniper’s Butterfly Garden–A Small Start for a Better World. Oklahoma library card holders are invited to check out Juniper’s Butterfly Garden, from any participating public and tribal library location within the state, to receive a voucher redeemable for free general admis-
sion to the OKC Zoo for up to four people. Read for Adventure provides an engaging activity for Oklahoma families that not only promotes spending time together but also sparks an interest in helping protect the natural world. Since its inception in 2017, more than 38,000 Oklahomans have had the opportunity to the experience the OKC Zoo at no cost through the Read for Adventure program. “The Zoo is grateful to OG&E and our library partners for their continued support of Read for Adventure and we look forward to sharing this one-of-a-kind reading program with Oklahoma’s communities,” said Dwight Lawson, OKC Zoo’s executive director and CEO.
Read for Adventure’s book, Juniper’s Butterfly Garden was written by Oklahoma City resident and OKC Zoo’s Creative Services Manager, Autumn Heigle, and illustrated by Nadia Ronquillo. This original book expresses the joy a child finds on her adventure to learn about monarch butterflies and the importance of creating habitat space for these vital pollinators. Additionally, readers will find information about planting a garden for monarchs and other pollinators and their migratory path through Oklahoma in the back of Juniper’s Butterfly Garden. The monarch butterfly population has dropped by over 80 percent in the last 20 years. The main reason for this is habitat loss throughout the
monarch's migration and breeding range. Each spring and fall, millions of monarch butterflies funnel through Oklahoma as they make their annual migration from central Mexico to southern Canada. Both the OKC Zoo and OG&E recognize the importance of these pollinators and the urgency of restoring their population and seasonal habitat. Read for Adventure continues through Thursday, March 31, 2022. Zoo admission vouchers are redeemable through Thursday, June 30, 2022. Vouchers can be redeemed at the Zoo’s ticket windows, reservations are not required. To learn more about the program and for a list of participating libraries, visit okczoo.org/readforadventure.

Summer time is meant to be quality time By Walker Moore The Baptist Messenger
W
hile I was growing up, there were three great days in the life of young Walker. Christmas topped the list; my birthday came second (I think there was a theme going on here) and then the first day of summer vacation. Do you want to know what day made the bottom of my list? Valentine’s Day. No 9-year-old boy should have been forced to sign his name on those cards decorated with little hearts and give them to the girls in our thirdgrade class. Summer vacation was never about how I was going to spend it but more how was I going to cram it all in. Summer meant barbecues, baseball, running through the woods, spending two weeks at our grandparents’ farm, catching hundreds of lighting bugs in a Mason jar, riding my bicycle, working in the garden, the neighborhood kids coming over to play Annie-Annie-Over or Red Rover, playing in the rain, a drive-in movie, church camp, Vacation Bible School, mowing the yard, going to the library, camping trips, fishing in the pond, shooting BB guns, swimming, climbing hay bales in the barn, spending a night or two in a tent, the smell of fresh-cut grass, running around with nothing on but a pair of shorts, catching a snake or two, riding in the back of the pickup, playing with my dog, tent revivals, driving tractors, playing in a stream, listening to the Kansas City A’s baseball game on my transistor radio and did I mention barbecues? Of course, summer also meant
crawling into bed each night, exhausted. There wasn’t enough daylight to get everything in. My second least favorite day was the last day of summer We had to get new clothes and go to bed early, so we would be ready for school. All good things must come to an end. As a parent, I didn’t realize how much summer meant to children until it was too late. One of the things I regret with my boys is not having enough family activities during the summer. As a youth pastor. my summers were taken up with youth camps, mission trips, Sunday School parties and more. Oh, we did a few special things, but the boys spent most of their summers tagging along with their dad. I didn’t recognize the importance of this season. Eccl. 3:1 (ESV) says it best: “For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.” The folly of being a young parent is not recognizing that each season has a purpose. My family were farmers and the seasons dictated what we did. Spring is the time of the year when the soils are tilled, fertilizer is put down and seeds are planted. During the summer we watered, weeded and monitored our crops. Rain was the most important ingredient of the summer; we needed just the right amount to have a great harvest. Fall was my favorite as the harvest was upon us. The combines churned as they plowed through the fields to gather the crops. Winter was the season of rest, a time to repair and replace equipment. After that, the cycle started all over again.
The same is true with a family. The spring is when, as a young couple, you get to know and grow together. It is a time of fun and spontaneity before the great responsibilities of having other lives in your care. During this season, you create memories and lay your foundation as a couple. Summer is when have your children and experience the joy of being their guide. In this season, you will discover your strengths and weaknesses in your “miniature me.” You will also sacrifice your wants for the needs of your children. In the fall, you see the rewards of raising your children according to the Word of God, and they start the process of leaving and cleaving with their life mates. They are becoming capable, responsible and self-reliant. A sense of wellness becomes yours. Winter is a time for rest, renewal, reflection and re-enjoying your spouse. Then along comes the grandkids, and the seasons start all over again. Summer is upon us and I desire that you fathers and mothers use this time to do something simple with your children. Many of my fondest memories are not about what we did but that we did it together. We see in the Bible that, in every season, Jesus spent quality time with those closest to Him. Whether he was traveling with His disciples, going out on the lake or eating a meal with them, they must have cherished the time and love He shared. And did I mention that at least some of those meals, especially in the summertime, must have included barbecue?

HE DECLARATION of Independence is an American holiday of great importance, second only to Christmas. Our forefathers made their bold declaration to free themselves from the rule of the crown and operate as a new country that would give them freedom of assembly, freedom of speech, freedom of the press, etc. Although sometimes challenged (another freedom) the guarantees of the Declaration still prevail today. They lived in a dramatically different culture than we have today. Think of the things we have that they did not. There were no refrigerators, no air condi-

tioning, no telephones, no electricity, no radio, no television, no indoor flush toilets, no cars, no airplanes, no computers or internet. But the 13 colonies declared themselves free from the rule of Great Britain and the King. They had the freedom they had won in the Revolutionary War. Thomas Jefferson was the principal author of the Declaration. John Adams grasped the historical importance of the day of Declaration. He said the date would be
“the most remarkable epoch in America,” and that “it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival.” So what have we, in 2013, done with the freedom our great ancestors created for, and left to, us? If they could overcome the strongest country in the world, surely we can solve some of the problems confronting us on this 2013 Independence Day. We can overcome our tax collectors from unfairly administrating because of our political beliefs. We can overcome the suffering of our many deprived Americans. We can stop trying to rule the disputes of the world. We can give our children, all of them, an education that will save them from poverty, We can resolve our differences and return to moving ahead.

Birthday among the Aspens with the Richardson family: Brett, Robin Richardson Gedman, Birthday guy Jerry, Joy and Brad.
Happy birthday Jerry Richardson! T
here are those with a “potty mouth” – I, apparently, have “potty fingers.” To celebrate husband Jerry’s big birthday, unbeknownst to him, I emailed the entire phone book, asking them to send him a birthday card. People from grade school through college, Navy days, Ford Motor Company friends, and, well, a lot of people. As this became laborious, I lumped some 20-30 at a time together, just going to my “sent” box to pick up the message and refreshing it with new names. A few days after I’d sent out probably sixty requests, I got my first puzzled return email from Darlene Parman. “Did you mean this to be this way?” she asked. Then I started getting calls from friends across the county. It seems in my stealthy plan, when asking folks to send the card to our son and daughter-inlaw’s home address, I wrote XXXX, Dorchester Driveass. What on earth is a Driveass? How did I manage to do that – and how didn’t I catch it? Fast forward to Jerry’s actual birthday, and to our daughter Robin’s amazement, in the hundred plus cards he received, FIVE folks were trusting enough to send it to Driveass. Bet the postman chuckled. Our three adult kids and spouses had planned this trip a long time ago, and they are
veteran planners. Flying us to Denver, they arranged a suite at the Brown Palace and Spa so we could acclimate. That alone was a huge treat as the historic old hotel (1893) is a treasure with stained glass atrium, and photos of the period, and some delightful quirks like the stretches of wrought iron-bordered hallways which have some upside-down panels for you to find. Our gathering was to be in Beaver Creek where son Brad and wife Lisa own a magnificent home. Son Brett flew in from Virginia (his lovely, and verymissed wife Liz, had already cemented her vacation days away from her medical practice, and couldn’t take more), daughter Robin and epically funny sonin-law Dan, flew in from Kansas City, and everyone landed within about 20 minutes of one another. Scooping us up at the hotel, we headed to the mountains. The kids had planned all the dinner reservations, birthday cake, Lisa’s constantly perfect snacks and hors’ d’oeuvres, hikes to Vail and Beaver Creek village, and Brad had laboriously put together a slide show, photo by photo of about a
thousand pictures. I can see you groaning – I won’t make you sit and watch it! But with his dry sense of humor, you can be sure he included no ordinary photo – we were all embarrassed or humiliated at least a hundred times. Jerry with an iron-man pose holding a starfish; Brad at age 3, naked, sitting on the kitchen passthrough eating peanuts, Brett in full makeup as a circus clown, etc. We made fun of each other during the three hilarious segments of the “viewing”; it is amazing we grew into humanlooking people after childhood. We’d not seen our kids who lived away for a year and a half – our hugs were so long and wonderful. We couldn’t help laughing at the things we saw people doing out in public, and daughter Robin kept saying, “Forgive them, they are just now remembering how to ‘human’.” On his actual birthday, a cup of coffee in his hand, Jerry was flummoxed by Brad dumping a giant basket of cards on his lap. It took him about four sessions to open and appreciate all those cards. Forgive me for writ-
ing about my family. But we’ve been in so long that my next choice would have been to share the tedious planning, reorganizing and folding of items in my sock and tights drawers. You got the better deal. We’re grateful to our inventive, creative, generous, and fun-loving kids and spouses. My hope for you is that you are also getting to finally hug your treasured kids and family.
