OKC will stay masked up through Oct. 20 By Rose Lane Editor The OKC City Council has agreed to extend its mask mandate to Oct. 20 and to make exceptions within it for people who are communicating with others who are hearing impaired.

The vote was 6 yays to 3 nays. The emergency clause allowing for the ordinance to go into effect in 24 hours was 7 for and 2 against. Seven is the magic number for an emergency to go into effect in Oklahoma City. Without the 7 votes, the ordinance wouldn’t

have gone into effect for 30 days. The original ordinance presented to the City Council contained language to extend the mask mandate to Nov. 30. Councilman David Greenwell asked if it would be possible to push that back to Oct. 15. He said

that as cases, hospitalizations and deaths continue to drop, going with a shorter time period would be more agreeable to residents. Councilman Mark Stonecipher was the author of the ordinance. He said he was open to anything that would help people support

the mask mandate. The council then came to the Oct. 20 date as that is a Tuesday — and when the council meets. Councilman Larry McAtee suggested making the mandate voluntary. Jo See MASKS, Page 3

September is EMSAcare month in Oklahoma City, when residents can change their membership with the ambulance service through Sept. 30. EMSAcare covers the out-of-pocket expenses for emergency ambulance transports anywhere in the EMSA service area, which is most of the Oklahoma City and Tulsa metro areas. It applies to all permanent members of the household, regardless of their age or relationship to each other and even if they don’t have medical insurance, city officials said. Oklahoma City residents who are not EMSAcare members can enroll by calling 2972833. Enrollment results in a $3.65 monthly charge included on the OKC utility bill. Members who want a membership card can print one at emsaonline.com/emsacare.html. Visit okc.gov/emsacare for more information. Officials said that even with good insurance coverage, a typical emergency ambulance ride can cost a patient about $800. It can cost more than $1,300 without insurance. Kay throws the BEST dinner party ever See, I TOLD you Kay Oliver sets a gorgeous table.

y friend, Kay Oliver is made of qualities you’d like in a leader of a major corporation. She’s obscenely organized, quick thinking, pays attention to detail, knows and employs quality in all things.

A dinner party in the home that she and husband Gates

Oliver enjoy is always a treat – both the food and the setting. Until ... To start the evening of funny events, the guest room potty would not flush, so Carolyn Coffey and Elizabeth Wilson tried to use their plumbing skills, to no avail. Well, that was embarrassing, but obviously it was working when Kay put the bowl of fresh flowers in there the hour before we arrived. We just chuckled and sent everyone to another bathroom when we saw them heading that way. We gobbled up hors d’oeuvres and enjoyed adult beverages as we were all so glad to be seeing people. Kay gave us a thorough verbal

quiz to ensure our safety before we were invited to dinner – showing she cared enough to question us before we joined in. We appreciated that. So, we are giggling and being hearty when Kay came from the kitchen and said, “Please continue, there has been a slight glitch and dinner won’t be on for, oh, another 40 minutes.” That information interrupted nothing in the entertaining tales of Troy Wilson, John Coffey and Jerry Richardson. But I was immensely curious. It seems the oven shelf shot out and rejected the Italian Chicken dish Kay See JOY, Page 11

Porter Davis said that was necessary to opening back up the economy. “Let this expire and let us get back to work,” he said. People can be relied upon to use common sense, Terry Womack said. “Every business owner should have

the right to set their own rules,” he said. In support of the extension, Dr. Mary Sheets said masks help protect our neighbors, as well as ourselves. “It is a small cost to pay to wear a mask,” she said. As the extension came to a vote, several councilmen questioned if the fines — $9 for first and second offenses and $100 for third — should be stricken. It was noted

that no fines had been imposed and the question was tabled until the next regular meeting of the City Council. Stonecipher asked that the city put the “tinkering” of the ordinance aside. “If we tinker with this, we aren’t getting to a vote of 7,” he said.

a rivalry, but it is a competition in the spirit of inclusion, neighborhood unity and community pride.” Hanging over this

season is the spectre of the COVID-19 pandemic with most schools requiring masks on their campuses and implement-

ing other social distancing protocols. School officials emphasize the safety of their fans and student-athletes. “Trust that we have procedures in place to protect our players, but more importantly, we are ready to compete,” Alexander said. In other action on Friday, one team hosts its season opener and two others are on the road to start 2020. John Marshall, which begins a new

era in Class 4A and a new coach in Jeff Horrocks, hosts Bethany at Taft Stadium. Heritage Hall hits the road for a matchup at Class 2A’s Millwood, while PC North visits districtrival Putnam City on Friday. All three games start at 7 p.m. Despite playing in Week 0, Deer Creek continued its season last Thursday at Southmoore. McGuinness, however, has the week off.

FOOTBALL | WEEK 0 SPOTLIGHT: IRISH 20, ROUGHERS 13

Irish hold off Muskogee in opener By Jason Jewell Sports Editor Tied with Muskogee early in the third quarter, the McGuinnes football team needed a boost to secure a win in its season opener. That came on the Irish’s first pessession of the period when quarterback Luke Tarman scrambled for a

17-yard touchdown and converted the 2point try to put them ahead for good to post a 20-13 victory over the Roughers last Friday night at Pribil Stadium. “Luke is a heckuva athlete,” McGuinness coach Bryan Pierce said after the game. “We’ve built our offense around him.” Tarman, a senior, rushed for 213 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries and threw for 92 yards an another TD for the Irish (1-0). He scored on a 4yard run and threw a 21-yard TD to Gra-

ham Tawwater with just over nine minutes left in the second quarter. Following Tarman’s last score, the McGuinness defense dominated Muskogee over the final quarter. On a hot, sweltering, late-summer night, several Irish players battled cramps including Tarman who sat out most of the fourth period. “I thought we had a good effort,” Pierce said. “We have a long way to go. For us to play in Week 0 with no spring ball and just one scrimmage, we played pretty well.”

Knights fall at Community Crossings Christian led in each of the first two quarters, but only scored one touchdown in the second half of a 35-20 loss at Community Christian last Friday in Norman. Jonah Mahen caught two touchdowns from two different quarterbacks. The senior hauled in a 68-yard score from Owen Crotts to open the first quarter and a 27-yarder from Drew Wood in the opening minutes of the first quarter.

COMMUNITY BOOSTER SERIES Mary Eddy Jones Playground is now complete and open Last fall, Hearts for Hearing received the Mary Eddy Jones Signa ture Gift from The Fred Jones Family Foundation for a grant of $75,000 that was used to build a new play ground at Hearts for Hearing’s Okla homa City facility. The Mary Eddy Jones Playground is now complete and open for children to use. “Having an outdoor space where children can enjoy themselves will allow for better cooperation and par ticipation in appointments and for assessing language and overall devel opment,” Hearts for Hearing Founder and CEO Joanna Smith said. “By adding the Mary Eddy Jones

Playground area through the Mary Eddy Jones Signature Gift, we can provide children who travel long dis tances an opportunity to expend energy and get fresh air before appointments where it is critical that they sit still.”’ The Mary Eddy Jones Playground at Hearts for Hearing features a story time area, workstations, an art area, a playhouse, swings and more. The playground gives the Listening and Spoken Language Specialists and speechlanguage pathologists the opportunity to extend group therapy to an outdoor learning space that focuses on enhancing gross motor

skills, multisensory experiences, and cooperative and imaginative play for patients. “We are looking forward to using the playground for our upcoming school year,” said Shanda Danielson, Early Childhood Educator at Hearts for Hearing. “The playground pro vides an environment for play and discovery, giving many opportunities for learning and social interactions to take place! We are so thankful to have such a wonderful space.” The Fred Jones Family Foundation is a nonprofit and charitable foundation dedicated to support the 501(c)(3) organizations that increase the quality

of life in central Oklahoma through proj‐ ects dedicated to cultural growth and beautification. Visit the foundation’s website at fredjonesfamilyfoundation.com. Hearts for Hearing was founded by Joanna T. Smith, Dr. Teresa Caraway, and Dr. Stan Baker to provide funding for the initial set of hearing aids for chil‐ dren with hearing loss in Oklahoma. Gen. Aragon says yes vote on SQ 805 will move veterans from prison to community

LL ACROSS Oklahoma, brave men and women enlist in the military, willing to risk their lives to protect our great nation. These servicemen and women have more than earned our respect. But we rarely treat them like the heroes they are after they have completed their service to our nation. Ravaged by war, some of our veterans return home from their military experience and suffer from mental health and addiction problems due to the trauma they face. As a retired Major General and former Oklahoma Secretary of Veterans Affairs, I know just how much our veterans sacrifice for this nation. Our veterans put their lives on the line, putting our country before all other personal needs. They

very often experience trauma, which manifests in mental health and addiction problems. Unfortunately, in Oklahoma we criminalize mental health issues with disproportionate sentences for low-level offenses, meaning that many of our veterans are incarcerated for years instead of receiving the help they need. But State Question 805, which would curb excessive sentences for nonviolent crimes, can help our veterans, and that’s why I’m voting ‘yes’ on 805 this November. SQ 805 would end the use of repeat sentence penalties, which can add years to a person’s prison sentence for a nonviolent offense because they had a prior nonviolent conviction. We need State Question 805 because my brothers-and sisters-in-arms are often punished with years in prison instead of provided with the help they need after they’ve sacrificed everything to secure our country. Instead of helping veterans overcome the challenges they can often face when they return home, like addiction and

trauma, we ignore them. When they believe they can’t handle their problems, they can sometimes turn to substance abuse and other nonviolent crimes. Yet still, we ignore these cries for help. We show no mercy or gratitude for their service. Hastily, the system uses sentence penalties to lock them in prison for even longer. One US Army veteran served 27 years after selling methamphetamine in 1998. With State Question 805, we can take meaningful steps toward meaningful reform that helps our veterans. State Question 805 would save millions of dollars a year, and saved money can be put towards helping veterans battle their mental health problems and overcome addiction. Currently, 28% of incarcerated veterans received sentence penalties for a nonviolent crime. That’s 275 veterans who, with real help, could return as contributing members of society, in addition to the already great service they have provided us. There is no doubt that we need a greater emphasis on helping our veterans. State Question 805 can help us do that. Join me in voting ‘yes’ on State Question 805 on Nov. 3. Let’s vote to take a big step towards investing more dollars in rehabilitation programs that can help our veterans live as members of our communities and not in our prisons.

was trying to cook and it came sliding out into her potholder-clad arms and refused to obey the oven’s many digital buttons. Ovens do have emotions – grumpy is one of them. Again, Kay made a strategic decision for our health and would not serve raw chicken. She called their son, David, and gave him the short story as he and Jenny had a great chicken meal somewhere on Memorial and Kay wanted to know where

that was, so she could save the day. David, as organized as Kay, had it ordered up and delivered while we were amusing one another in the living room. Starting with soup, we proceeded our way through dinner and Kay’s many courses along with the new chicken, and it was fabulous. I blinked and noticed the guy next to me was on the floor. He’d rocked back on the chair, the legs and back of the chair buckled and he was flat on the floor with his legs in the air. We, being concerned friends, instead of helping him, just burst out laughing. He couldn’t get traction as

he was between two other chairs and was laughing so hard he couldn’t get up. He rolled on his side, obviously not hurt in any way, someone brought him another chair and dessert cobbler and ice cream went on. Grace under pressure would describe Kay, she was cool about the toilet, calm about the chicken, very worried about her fallen guest – and then started chortling. “What else?” She croaked out, “What else could go wrong?” John Coffey said with tears running down his cheeks from laughter, “This is the BEST dinner party I’ve ever attended!”
