CELEBRATING 25

Signature program develops leaders

2018-2019 marks the 25th year of the NWOKC Chamber’s signature program, Leadership Northwest. Since its inception in the 1990s, more than 200 people have graduated from Leadership Northwest. One of the primary goals of the program is to inform, motivate and better prepare its graduates to then take on leadership roles in service to the community. From September to May, the Leadership Class attends monthly sessions focusing on education, public safety, economic development, health care, government and nonprofit organizations to gain an awareness of the challenges and opportunities that exist in this community, as well as to discuss and develop potential solutions.

Warr Acres Mayor Jim Mickley

Warr Acres Mayor Jim Mickley said his experience with Leadership Northwest helped give him direction in learning about leadership in the community. “Jill McCartney did a great job to make the leadership class very informative and I looked forward to each class,” he said. Mickley was vice mayor at the time. Now retired, he said he was in sales most of his career, most recently as the sales manager for a national company covering 16 states. He worked with

sales reps to develop new business and with their dealer network to give them a better understanding of his company’s programs and products. Mickley ran for City Council, was elected in 2012 and has run unopposed since then. He became vice mayor in 2014 and was made mayor in March. Graduating from Leadership Northwest has helped Mickley to know more businesses in the area and has given him the direction he needed to help in recruiting new business

to Warr Acres, as well as assisting him in working with surrounding governments. “The class helped in making new contacts and self-confidence to meet with them,” Mickley said. “It also gives you a better understanding of how to work with others with the same goals.”

Jeff Knapp, Francis Tuttle City of Bethany Francis Tuttle’s Public Affairs Coordinator Jeff Knapp said administrators suggested he consider participating in Leadership Northwest and he “jumped at the chance.” Since that time, Knapp has become a member of the Bethany City Council and has served as vice mayor. In previous roles, he worked for a U.S. Justice Department (grant-funded) position, as well as a position to pass legislation. “I received many great things from my participation in Leadership Northwest, among them the knowledge of leadership in the community, a broad network of professionals in our area, opportunities to be involved and bonds with classmates,” Knapp said. “I appreciate that Leadership Northwest has changed for the

better over time, yet continues to offer opportunities to learn and grow.” “I try to remain engaged with the program and the chamber.”

Priscilla Cude, First Bethany Bank, NWOKC Chamber Leadership Northwest provided Priscilla Cude, president of First Bethany Bank and first vice president of the Northwest OKC Chamber, the opportunity to network with people outside of her work circle. “I wanted to know more about the services and inner workings of the many organizations that I drove by every day or heard about, but didn’t really understand all that they did,” she said. Cude grew up in eastern Oklahoma and is a graduate of the University of Oklahoma where she earned a BBA in finance. She married Roger Cude, who was from Ardmore, so she lived there and worked at a bank in the Trust

Marcia Feisal, Bethany Improvement Foundation Learning about city government and leadership through Leadership Northwest has been very helpful for Bethany Improvement Foundation President Marcia Moon Feisal in her post-retirement years. After a 32-year career in education, Feisal retired in 2011 from Southern Nazarene University. Her career started in 1981 at Putnam City North High School where she was the yearbook and newspaper adviser and photography teacher. After eight years at PCN, she earned a master's of art and taught as an adjunct at Southwestern Christian University. At SNU, she was a communication professor and lastly, the chairman of the new Art and Design Department. Feisel said SNU’s cabinet asked her to participate in Leadership Northwest in 1998. “And, during our tour of City Hall, I noticed an overflowing and unruly pile of old city newspapers on the floor in a room,”

Department for seven years. They moved to Oklahoma City in the fall of 1991 and she went to work at First Bethany Bank in February of 1992. Through Leadership Northwest, Cude said she learned about the strengths and weaknesses of her own leadership abilities. “It helped me to understand the many aspects of our community and how those pieces all fit together,” she said. “I think the more informed you are about your community, the better citizen and worker you become.” “I am better able to have informed conversations with my customers, whose businesses or jobs are touched by the subjects we covered.”

she said. “Upon discovering the papers were past issues saved for historical value, I knew then that someday I was going to do something about appropriately preserving the city's history.” Since that time, Feisal has been instrumental in writing a book about the history of Bethany, “Blessed Bethany, the Centennial History of Bethany, Oklahoma” and the formation of the Bethany Improvement Foundation. And, that stack of papers in City Hall? “Southern Nazarene University and the City of Bethany's historical memorabilia, books, newspapers, records and so on are safely stored and catalogued in the The Fred Floyd Archives located in the RT Williams Library on the SNU campus,” she said.

Leadership Northwest graduate Marilyn Olson says the program’s emphasis on the infrastructure, history and leadership of the area has helped in her position as the executive director of VillagesOKC. VillagesOKC is the first of its kind in Oklahoma which helps those 55-plus to age in their own homes successfully with a network of neighbors offering support. “Having a high regard for those who created our local history allows me to appreciate and build on the efforts of the persevering and often heroic efforts of those who have gone before,” Olson said. “Particularly as we create VillagesOKC, a new endeavor, it is very encouraging to think that all things are possible.” An Oklahoma native, Olson graduated from Southern Nazarene University, taught school and owned a marketing agency before holding several positions in the hospital and healthcare industry. She and her husband raised three girls who received all their education in the Putnam City School system. All that time they were residents of Bethany. A desire to know more about their hometown led her to enroll in Leadership Northwest, Olson said.

ARTS IN SCHOOLS The arts are flourishing in our public schools. That’s a good thing as research indicates that the benefits of exposing children of all ages to the arts are expediential. Through the arts, kids learn to think creatively and with an open mind. The arts help kids to observe and describe, analyze and interpret and express feelings, with or without words. A bonus benefit is that the arts can help make school fun!

Putnam City has award-winning programs Putnam City supports and invests in both art and music programs with full-time teachers at all 18 elementary schools. In addition, the district offers an elementary orchestra program in which fourth and fifth-grade students in every elementary school can learn to play the violin or other stringed instruments. In the five middle schools, Putnam City provides art, vocal music, orchestra, band, theatre and ceramics to all students. Students in the district’s three high schools have the opportunity to choose from over 30 arts options ranging from the visual arts, show choir, orchestra and band. Each high school also supports major musicals and performances for both the school community and the broader community. More than 5,000 middle school and high school students take part in arts programs in the district. The district arts festival is held each year in May and will hold its

39th annual event this school year. The colorful festival brings together arts performances and visual arts from elementary school through high schools along with art-making experiences for children and adults who visit the festival. Another celebration of the arts takes place when the district’s school board declares each March as Youth Arts Month in Putnam City. Artwork created by district students is displayed at the State Department of Education and in local libraries throughout the community. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts announced that Putnam City Schools received the 22nd annual Kennedy Center Alliance for Arts Education Network and National School Boards Association Award. The district was singled out from nominees around the country for its outstanding support of high-quality arts education. In February 2018, Putnam City Schools was the only school district among just five organizations and 14 individuals that were honored for its contributions to the arts during the 2018 Governor’s Arts Awards. “The Putnam City School district is dedicated to the success of all students and believes the arts are an integral part of students’ educational experience. Our 99 fine arts teachers are experts in their fields who truly care about helping each child grow both artistically and as an individual. The fine arts teachers are passionate about showcasing the accomplishments of their students. Each week in Putnam City you'll find a teacher exhibiting student work, hosting a play or concert, and encouraging the creativity of our students,” Brandy Sitts, NBCT, the district’s fine arts and gifted services coordinator, said.

From kindergarten through high school, Bethany students enjoy the arts Students are exposed to the arts at all levels in the Bethany Public Schools. Earl Harris Elementary School offers art and music from kindergarten through fifth grade for all students. Kindergarteners and fourth and fifth graders also have the opportunity to learn to play the violin, Principal Reuben Bellows said. Fifth graders who are interested in vocal music can audition for the school’s honors chorus program, he said. At the middle school level, students have access to electives to go along with the core curriculum, Principal Trey Koeppel said. “We have choir, band and

orchestra programs as well as sections of art that are offered to our sixth through eighth grade students,” he said. At Bethany High School, students can continue their artistic pursuits by taking part in orchestra, band, jazz band, vocal music (non-audition), show choir (audition), art, arts/crafts and advanced art for Advanced Placement credit, Principal Mark Melton said. “We also put on a fantastic all school musical in the spring,” He said. “The last few years, we have done ‘The Adams Family,’ ‘Cinderella,’ ‘Annie Get Your Gun’ and ‘The Little Mermaid.’”

Shellenberger Arts Center dedicated The Bethany Public Schools dedicated the Shellenberger Performing Arts Center during a ceremony last September. The building was named in honor of Dr. Kent Shellenberger, the district’s long-time superintendent who retired in 2017. Current Superintendent Dr. Drew Eichelberger said the PAC can hold about 500 people. It was opened last fall and was paid for through a Bethany Public Schools bond issue. The accommodations are pretty standard with the exception of the orchestra pit. “It is a beautiful facility,” Eichelberger said. The PAC helps the arts to “foster creativity, confidence and improved academic performance in students,” he said.

TOMORROW’S LEADERS Organization helps young pros grow

An organization that caters to young business professionals – entrepreneurs and employees alike – is gaining traction in the Oklahoma City metro area. The Northwest Young Professionals was founded in 2012, but the board of directors changed the name last year to the Oklahoma City Young Professionals. The OKC Young Professionals now have 80 members, representing accounting, insurance, banking, flooring, construction, nursing, law and other professions. The Young Professionals host multiple activities, including Connect networking opportunities, lunch meet-ups and After Hours events. Oklahoma City Young Professionals also partner with established businesses to provide workshops and seminars that focus on branding, financing and other topics that young, careerminded professionals are interested in.

Terrance Craft, Crafty Communications OKCYP chairman Terrance Craft is the CEO and owner of Crafty Communications and also the chairman of the Oklahoma City Young Professionals. “The organization was truly the catalyst I needed to pursue my business full-time,” he said. Crafty Communications offers public relations, social media marketing and consulting, email marketing, video production, event coordination,

brand management and photography. Craft said the other young business owners he met through the OKCYP inspired him to go out on his own. “Before getting involved with OKCYP, I didn’t realize that Oklahoma City was so full of successful, young entrepreneurs,” he said. Being a member of the OKC Young Professionals has not only helped Craft professionally, but also

personally. “I have made so many connections and life-long friends within this organization,” Craft said. “The Oklahoma City Young Professionals has given me everything that I needed to be successful.”

Garrett Johnson, Smooth Draw Cigars Värde Insurance Group The Oklahoma City Young Professionals is much more than getting together for drinks after hours, Garrett Johnson, owner of Smooth Draw Cigars, says. “The difference is the quality of events and the opportunities to establish solid strategic partners and professional partners which can have a tremendous impact on your business,” he said. Johnson, who is also a managing partner with his twin brother in the Värde Insurance Group, said Smooth Draw offers rare, exotic and hard-to-find cigars. “We also place custom orders daily for weddings (cigar bars), birthdays, company events and special events,” he said. “In addition, we also provide consultative services for country clubs, lounges, and businesses across the state that provide cigars to their patrons.” About three years ago, Johnson said he was really intrigued with finding excellent and rare cigars — ones that no one had

ever talked about or heard of before. “So, I did what any millennial would do and got on social media and searched for ultra-boutique and rare cigars,” he said. “Upon this search, I discovered several rare high quality brands.. “In 2016, I started reviewing various cigars on a blog online and my goal was simple: provide exposure for these wonderfully crafted & not-so-well known cigar brands. What started as a fun hobby has cultivated to what is now SmoothDrawCigars.com.” He said OKCYP has helped increase his network with various businesses and professionals. “I can attribute several orders and opportunities I’ve had to OKCYP and I am very appreciate of that.”

Kara Miller, owner of Resonance Mind Body Wellness, says she believes being young has actually been helpful for her. “Though I do still run into the incredulous, ‘You're the owner? How OLD are you?’ I get a kick out of it,” she said. Miller had been working for herself since 2011. “It was just time for my own storefront,” she said. “I had been planning and dreaming for awhile and it was time.” Resonance Mind Body Welness offers a variety of services, including facials, several types of massage and facial waxing. “Personally, I specialize in sports, deep tissue and geriatric massage,” she said. Being a member of the Oklahoma City Young Professionals has many benefits. “I think it's great to get to be around other young professionals and discuss business challenges or hang-ups to get other perspectives/insights,” Miller said. “It's been very helpful to network with others.”

ABOUT THE YMCA OF GREATER OKC: • The YMCA is the nation’s leading non-profit committed to strengthening communities through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. • The YMCA never turn anyone away due to the inability to pay. The YMCA offers financial assistance so that its neighbors can participate in Y programs and enjoy its facilities. • Last year alone, 61,606 kids experienced its developmental youth programs, including youth sports, before and after school care, teen programing and camps. • In addition to offering a fitness center, the YMCA hosted 495 classes with 375,137 participants in 2017. • Due to the generosity of the community, the YMCA was able to award more than $3.7 million in financial assistance and free or subsidized programs. WHAT YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT THE YMCA OF GREATER OKLAHOMA CITY: • The YMCA operates the Military Welcome Center at Will Rogers Airport, where an average of 32,000 military members visit on an annual basis. Here they receive a comforting place to relax and enjoy a meal, play games or watch a movie before heading to basic

training, or while traveling through OKC. • The YMCA hosts a class, free to participants, for cancer survivors and their buddy to focus on strengthening their body, mind and spirit following treatment. • The YMCA partnered with other local non-profit organizations and companies during the Teacher Walkout this past spring to ensure kids had a safe place to go during the day and a full meal. • The YMCA partners with the Oklahoma Housing Authority to provide opportunities for kids and families in their communities. Some activities include a feeding program, after school activities and mentoring and Sleep to Succeed – a program where kids who have never had their own bed, receive a brand new bed. • The YMCA is a cause-driven, non-profit organization focused on meeting the needs of the community. RESTAURANT SCENE GAINS VARIETY Taste the Northwest Dining out is one of the hottest national trends and people in NWOKC are joining the movement, frequently enjoying the fare of hundreds of diverse new restaurants. The continuing popularity of food trucks and pop-up street festivals is giving rise to many seasoned food-truck pros venturing into traditional brick and mortar restaurants. Several national restaurants joined NWOKC this year including Black Bear Diner, Metro Diner, and Outback Steakhouse. It also saw the expansion of local chains like S&B Burger Joint. The NWOKC Chamber promotes dining out with the Taste of Northwest Auction and Food Fest each fall and a Restaurant Week in the spring.
