Society is leading the attack on cancer Nearly everyone has heard of the American Cancer Society, yet it largely remains one of Oklahoma City’s best-kept secrets. The organization provides free transportation to cancer patients, offers free lodging to patients who need a place to rest, and it offers free wigs to individuals whose treatments has caused them to lose their hair. Yet the Society does so much more — all through state and local fundraising efforts. Executive Director Lesa

WAYS TO HELP AND HAVE FUN

RUN FOR HOPE The first major fundraiser, “Run For Hope,” will be Sat. Aug. 25 on the campus of the OU Health Sciences Center. “For our inaugural ‘Run For Hope,’ we are focused on providing the best experience for both serious runners and casual walkers,” Foster said. “This fun run, 5K and 10K will give supporters a chance to walk/run in honor or memory of a loved one who has battled any diagnosis of cancer. Pre-registration is just $35. This familyfriendly event will have something for everyone so we hope Oklahoma City will come out and join us. It will be emceed by Brett Buganski and Mecca Rayne from KOCO-TV.” Go to www.runforhopeokc.org for more information and to register.

Foster says as they head into their busiest season, it’s important to keep funding strong. “Over the course of our 100-plus year history, the American Cancer Society has been involved in some aspect of nearly every cancer breakthrough,” she says. “Whether it’s cutting-edge research or one of the many programs we offer, the Society attacks cancer from every angle right here in Oklahoma.”

events,” Foster said. “We have a live and silent auction, great live music and delicious food provided by local restaurants. For this event you must be 21 or older to attend, and it is so much fun. KOCO-TV’s Jessica Shambach and Abigail Ogle will serve as our emcees.” GREASE IS THE WORD! This summer marks the 40th anniversary of one of the best-loved musicals of all time. The soundtrack to “Grease” was re-issued on vinyl, and is signed by “Sandy” herself, Olivia NewtonJohn! Olivia is a cancer survivor, and while performing a concert in Oklahoma, she signed the LP for the Oklahoma American Cancer Society. Purchase tickets at the door or online at www.cattlebaronsballokc.org ACS GOLF CLASSIC AT OAK TREE Sports enthusiasts always look forward to the annual Golf Classic, Foster said. “This kicks off a busy month in October as we recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month,” she added. “It will be Monday, Oct. 22 at Oak Tree Golf and Country Club. We have a great day planned, and hopefully great weather!” Teams of four can register by emailing Rachel.Stratton@cancer.org

So be on the lookout for men in pink!” Men, if you are interested in joining this movement please contact Alicia.Jackson@cancer.org “If you or someone you love has been touched by cancer, we invite you to join us for one or all these events,” Foster said. “Volunteer to walk, run, golf or attend our gala. THE FACES OF CANCER BayLea Akins is 14 years old and was diagnosed with Leukemia two years ago. “Within minutes of hearing her diagnosis she told us, ‘don’t worry, I’m going to beat this,’” said BayLea’s mom, JoEtta Akins. “She grew up playing outside and was always very active. She went into a coma last September and when she woke up three weeks later, she had lost the use of her legs. But she’s determined to get back outside, even in her wheelchair. She has endured so much but has never lost her positive attitude. And I think the work American Cancer Society does is so amazing. The research, to me, is the most important part, but also the help with travel, free wigs, lodging — is simply incredible. For BayLea’s sake and survivors everywhere, I hope everyone continues to support the American Cancer Society and their life-saving mission.”

James Bost is an account executive at Koch Communications and a survivor of pancreatic cancer. “I had a young family, I had young kids when I was diagnosed,” he said. “Pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest forms of cancer, and it’s one of the most difficult to treat. That’s why it is so important to support organizations like American Cancer Society. They have such great outreach and support services, and your donations also support research and funding. That is vital to finding a cure for cancer. I hope others will join me at the Run For Hope. I have run nine marathons since my cancer diagnosis, and I never ran marathons before. So, cancer changed my life, and these past six years have been the best years ever. This run is in late August, and it will be hot, but it will be so worth the effort!” Go to www.runforhopeokc.org for more information and to register.
