80 years of growth, stability and change During the last year, we’ve been reflecting on the growth of our organization and our community over the last 80 years. Growth brings change and the chamber has worked to be a catalyst for positive change. We’ve also been a stabilizing force in our community during uncertain times. Over the last year we’ve experienced our own highs and lows: experiencing a flood in our office, a sudden move and settling into a new location. We’re finding new ways to serve our members using technology, as we explore ways to address emerging needs in our community. We’ve determined that by focusing on Relationships, Resources and Results, we can better share our story to attract new members and work with our broader community. We appreciate the heritage shared by previous generations of Chamber leaders and look forward to those who will follow us far into the future. There are so many exciting things happening in our community right now. We invite you to join the Chamber so that you can be a part of the history we’re making today.

ABOUT THE NWOKC CHAMBER
The 80th anniversary emblem shown on this page was commissioned by the Chamber with local artist Rachel Comingdeer to recognize many important aspects of the Chamber. The emblem was shared with members in a variety of ways — on t-shirts, engraved in special recognition plaques and other memorabilia.
NWOKC Chamber marks 80 years of community Throughout 2019 the Northwest Oklahoma City Chamber has been celebrating its 80 years of community engagement and business advocacy, culminating with a special anniversary coffee on Oct. 30, 2019.
ity. Leadership Northwest has graduated several hundred people from the program, helping them develop personal skills and economic understanding that will help them grow businesses and promote community betterment.
The history of the Chamber and the cities it serves — Bethany, Warr Acres, Nichols Hills, The Village and Oklahoma City — are woven together after years of community interaction, according to CEO and President Jill McCartney.
“Our role in this community is to know different needs and know the different people … so we can see how to connect them to make things operate optimally,” McCartney said.
The Chamber began in 1939 as the Bethany Commerce Club. It was founded to protect the business interests of the city, which was nearly 10 miles from Oklahoma City at the time. Warr Acres was later established to protect itself from being incorporated by the rapidly growing Bethany. In its early years, the Chamber was successful in advocating to keep Route 66 on ground level and running through downtown Bethany despite a federal effort to build an elevated bypass around the city. The Chamber also worked with Bethany leaders to keep its own zip code, 73008, when the US Postal Service standardized most other parts of the metro to start with “731.” As the area’s population grew, individual cities of Nichols Hills and The Village connected geographically with Oklahoma City, Bethany and Warr Acres in forming an intertwined quadrant of the city known of “NWOKC to serve the cities, businesses and communities that comprise this area. “It’s important for these cities to be recognized as being a part of the metro,” McCartney said. “How convenient they are, how many amenities they’re close to — as people are looking to relocate or form a business. Being a part of the metro is a big positive selling point. The metro area is thriving.” In the early 1990s, the northwest metro area continued to thrive and the Chamber started a program to train community and business leaders in hopes of maintaining this prosper-
6
Last year the Chamber adopted a new mission statement: “We are the Catalyst for Community Connections by Growing Relationships, Sharing Resources and Gaining Results.” To mark its 80th anniversary, the Chamber commissioned a design of numerous words essential to its history and identity in the shape of Oklahoma. It appears on tiles and wooden plaques that are given to donors to the “80 for 80” capital campaign, which encourages people to give $80 or $800 to help the Chamber better serve its roughly 340 members. This year the Chamber is also recognizing 12 of its members as Legacy Members. Legacy Members have been significantly involved with the chamber for at least four decades — some since the beginning. Those honored as Legacy Members are: Bethany Library — MLS, Bethany Public Schools, Bethany YMCA, City of Bethany, City of Warr Acres, First Bethany Bank & Trust, Francis Tuttle Technology Center, OG&E, Putnam City Public Schools, Southern Nazarene University, The Children’s Center Rehabilitation Hospital and Bethany First Church of the Nazarene. “It’s been inspiring to look back on the path our organizations have walked together. We are happy to thank them and honor them for all they mean to us,” McCartney said. Beyond marking this anniversary, McCartney said the Chamber looks to the future to have a positive impact on the community, driven by its members and board of directors.

ALL ABILITIES PLAYGROUND
Everyone can play on Bethany playground
Patients of the Children’s Center enjoy Bethany’s All Abilities Playground.
10
Bethany’s All Abilities Playground is a place everyone can have a great time, regardless of limitations. The idea for the special playground started with a conversation between Susan Westmoreland, wife of Bethany Mayor KP Westermoreland, and Dr. Arlita Harris, who at the time served as chairman of the Library Committee and a member of the City Council. “Being a speech pathologist who works with individuals who have special needs, I expressed my interest for how great it would be to have an All Abilities playground in our community,” Westmoreland said. Dedicated at the end of April 2019, the project was the culmination of 18 months of work by the
Northwest OKC Chamber Community Guide and Membership Directory
playground committee, chaired by Westermoreland, with members Kelli Johnson, a recreational therapist at the Children’s Center, and Katie King, then library director at Southern Nazarene University. “These types of playgrounds are extremely important, as they allow individuals of all abilities to play and interact side by side,” she said. “Our playground is for all individuals, whether bound by a wheelchair or other physical handicaps, or those who have sensory needs. This playground is one that all can enjoy.” The All Abilities Playground is approximately 8,400 square feet and sits on the former police station lot. The playground is vibrant in colors and has bright blue pourin-place rubber flooring. It is located at 6700 NW 35th St.
There are several swings, including some for children who are wheelchair-bound. “We have an aeroglider that allows those who are wheelchair bound to swing alongside peers while remaining in their wheelchair,” she said. An adult/larger child and smaller child can swing together with the swing along seat. “Our playground has multiple slides, including a roller slide,” Westmoreland said. “It has several options for climbing as well as various balance tracks.” Different panels encourage learning by matching colors and shapes. Some have sounds, such as that of farm animals and vehicles. Westmoreland said there is a music area where individu-
als can experience a variety of instruments to create their own music, as well as a reading area with hand-painted leaves and bugs for adults and children to sit on while reading/listening to a story. The All Abilities Playground is a popular place to be. “There are various centers, including the Children’s Center, that bus children over to play on it and enjoy it,” Westmoreland said. “We have received nothing but positive feedback. It has been an amazing addition to our community.” “We are so very proud of this project and our hearts are full of pride and joy knowing our community is one of the few that has an amazing place for all abilities to play.”
Soccer Wall promotes community In June, members of the OKC Energy Soccer Team, children, parents and community leaders gathered for the “first kick’ at Bethany’s new SUTU Soccer Wall at Garrison Park. The Soccer Wall employs technology to provide interactive games for both groups and individual players. This interactive wall contains 16 illuminated panels that register ball contact through sensors. Players can download an app on their smart phone and challenge others around the world. The wall offers a myriad of games and challenges, is designed for all ages, and fully accessible to all abilities. Historically, technology has not played a major role in park design and development, but new advances in technology help the City of Bethany modernize its parks to match the growing and changing needs of the community. Mayor KP Westmoreland proposed Garrison Park, located on 19th Street East of Rockwell, as the site of the new SUTU Soccer Wall because it has not had any major updates since the 1970s. In communities with an existing SUTU Soccer wall, users experience a shared play environment, stronger communities and families. The soccer wall brings people of all ages and abilities out to play and exercise. Yalp, the maker of the SUTU Soccer Wall, is the founder of interactive play and currently the global leader for interactive indoor/outdoor play equipment.

EDUCATION
Francis Tuttle academies give high school students a leg up
From top to bottom: High school students take classes in Francis Tuttle’s Computer Science, Engineering and Biosciences and Medicine
12
High school students can get a step ahead in their career aspirations by attending a special academy at Francis Tuttle Technology Center. “Francis Tuttle’s Academies are designed to couple hands-on projects with AP and Pre-AP math and science curriculum to better prepare high school students for the rigor of university degree programs in three specific disciplines, with a fourth in the planning stage,” Francis Tuttle’s Jeff Knapp said. Tuition is free for the Biosciences and Medicine Academy, the Computer Science Academy and the Engineering Academy. Students spend half of their day in class at Francis Tuttle’s Rockwell Campus. The academies are designed to prepare students for college in these particular areas of study. Each academy combines rigorous math and science classes (honors and AP level only) with biosciences and medicine, computer science or engineering classes to provide students with the academics they will need to be successful in a bachelors program. The goal of the academies is to provide academic prep, hands on learning, leadership and exceptional experiences. This program of study is also designed to help students determine what career field they want to pursue. High school students can attend the academies for up to three years. College credit for Advanced Placement courses is available upon passing the appropriate AP College Board Exam(s).

With the completion of the stadium at Putnam City North, above, and Putnam City West, all three Putnam City High Schools now get to play on their own home turf.
All three Putnam City high schools can now play true home football games with the completion of stadiums at Putnam City North and Putnam City West High Schools. The district’s Director of Communications Sheradee Hurst said all three high schools shared the stadium at Putnam City Original for more than 40 years until the stadiums at PC North and PC West opened this year. She said that amenity- and facility-wise, all three stadiums are comparable with a large video scoreboard, artificial turf, new lighting, a press box, team meeting rooms and a concession stand. The stadium at PCN has 3,340 seats, while PCW can accommodate 3,558 people.

The home stadiums are very beneficial for the high schools as now there is no longer a need to schedule home football games on Thursday nights. Hurst said that allows more people the opportunity to attend games and students do not have to wake up early and attend classes and take tests after a late Thursday night game. “School pride is better when you have a true home field,” she said. Middle school teams now get to play their home games on the fields where they’ll play when they reach high school. Hurst said leaders believe this will also increase school pride.

REVITALIZATION & RENNAISSANCE
New library brings public access makerspace to metro
The new Bethany Library is more than double the size of the former facility.
14
As the new Bethany Library opens, it will not only mean more room and more books. It will be the first in the Metropolitan Library System to have a dedicated makerspace. “Makerspaces are very popular in today’s library,” Kim Terry, director of marketing and communications for the library system, said. A makerspace is an area that provides library patrons the opportunity to create and collaborate using shared resources and tools. At Bethany, Making, Learning, Sharing Studio includes a 3-D printer and a green screen to spark imaginations and give participants a variety of hands-on experiences, Terry said. In April 2016, Bethany citizens voted to replace their 50-year-old library with a new facility designed to meet the needs of the next 50
Northwest OKC Chamber Community Guide and Membership Directory
years. The library is more than double in space from the old facility. Terry said it boasts 23,000 square feet, compared to the 8,400 square feet of its predecessor. That also doubles the amount of seating and workstations available and includes a drive-up book drop. The Bethany Library has a dedicated children’s area, as well as a teen area. There is a porch so everyone cansit and read by the pond. Children also have their own porch, Terry said. Another feature of the new facility is large, subdividable meeting room with a kitchenette, as well as a conference room. “The subdividable meeting room is used for events and programs and is available for outside groups to rent out for meetings or presentation,” Terry said.
Village, Nichols Hills experiencing growth spurt The Village and Nichols Hills have experienced major improvements to infrastructure and development over the past year. As a part of The Village’s 2018 Bond Issue: $8.5 million has been allocated for streets and $1.88 million for parks. In street improvements, City Manager Bruce Stone said that equates 12 miles of resurfacing. One mile of Britton Road reconstruction is expected to be completed in November. He said Northland Drainage Project was completed in August. Improvements in Bumpass, Duffner, Harrison and Wayne Schooley Parks are in process. Stone said The Village residents can look forward to 7.75 miles of new sidewalk and signalization at May and Lakeside, Britton and Penn and Ridgeview and Britton. Over the past few years, the City of Nichols Hills has experienced significant

residential and commercial development, City Manager Shane Pate said. “Notably, the Nichols Hills Plaza is in the middle of a renaissance under the helm of its current owner, Washington Prime,” he said. “With new or relocated and well established businesses ..., the city has experienced sales tax collection increases exceeding 13 percent for the
past two fiscal years and a 22 percent increase in fiscal year 2016.” The city has also realized considerable residential development, he said. “For instance, in the 2018-2019 fiscal year alone, 21 new homes were constructed, which is significant for the city of approximately 1,800 homes,” Pate said. Notably, two planned unit development areas, Cumberland Court and Glenbrook Park, are in the midst of being redeveloped. Multi-family uses in the city have also seen significant changes as the Grandmark Condominiums, Sherwood Arms Apartments and Nichols Hills Manor Condominiums have all undergone major renovations over the past year. “All of this development is making great strides in advancing the city’s interests in providing market relevant housing for its residents of today and tomorrow,” Pate said.

ADVOCACY
Chamber’s support of municipalities helps infrastructure, economic development
OKC Mayor David Holt thanks Northwest OKC Chamber Board members Lawrence Ross and Alisha Gardner and Chairman Priscella Cude for the Chamber’s support at the MAPs 4 Coalition Campaign announcement at OKC City Hall.
16
One of the things that distinguishes a Chamber from other kinds of organizations is its role as an advocate looking out for the economic interests of the community. Over the last year the Northwest Oklahoma City Chamber has stepped forward on many different fronts to get needed community investments approved. On April 2, 2019, the City of Warr Acres held the first major bond election since 1962 to gain support for improving public safety and streets. The Chamber worked to explain both the need for the investment and the process of bonding at several town hall meetings. The Chamber also created a public information platform called “Warr Acres Yes” or “The W.A.Y.” and provided direct communications to engage and motivate voters to go to the polls. As the results came in, the bond initiatives passed, providing a $7.5 million investment in infrastructure to replace 50+ year old fire and police stations, and to build an animal control.facility. The bonds also provided more than $4 million to fix streets, part to improve Warr Acres neighborhood streets and part as 20 percent matching funds to 80% federal funds to widen and repair MacArthur Boulevard from 46th Street south to the Warr Acres city limits. In Bethany, the Chamber held candidate forums before municipal elections to give voters the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about those running to serve on Bethany City Council. As the Council took up consideration of creating TIF (or Tax-Increment-Financing) Districts in the spring, Chamber leadership spoke before City Council in favor of the TIF, and recruited other community leaders to support the Economic Development incentive plan to increase investment interest and help bring more development/redevelopment to Bethany. This fall, the Chamber Board participated in a meeting with Mayor David Holt at OKC City Hall to learn more about the MAPS 4 proposal. Once confirmed by the OKC City Council, the NWOKC Chamber became one of the first organizations to endorse the MAPS 4 package which goes before voters Dec. 10. From creating a legislative agenda, holding an annual NWOKC Chamber Day at the State Capitol and having regular interactions with municipal, state and federal lawmakers, the Northwest Oklahoma City Chamber makes sure that member interests and the NWOKC community are well represented.

HEALTH CARE
Urgent cares provide convenient, affordable care A good option for non-emergency medical treatment, urgent cares provide more convenient and affordable help. Mercy-GoHealth operates two centers in Northwest OKC, while INTEGRIS has an affiliation with three Access Urgent Cares in the area. “The NWOKC community deserves effortless access to high-quality, consumer-focused care that is fully integrated into the broader healthcare continuum,” Mercy’s Hannah Copeland said. “Patient convenience, open access and extended hours are the key driver in urgent care business,” Kelly Means, the director of primary care operations with INTEGRIS Medical Group, said. Although urgent care clinics and emergency rooms treat many of the same ailments, urgent care is where to go for a medical problem, not a medical emergency, Copeland said.
18
NWOKC Chamber leaders joins with Mery-GoHealth officials to cut the ribbon on the new Nichols Hlls facility.
“If your life isn’t on the line, don’t wait in an ER line,” she said. Urgent care centers treat sports injuries, sprains/strains, minor cuts and wounds, broken bones, cold/flu symptoms, sinus infections, ear infections and urinary tract infections, Means said. “Life threatening illness/injuries such as chest pain, head injuries, deep wounds, heavy bleeding, shortness of breath, seizures and broken bones should be treated at the emergency room.” Copeland said that people can get the help they need at urgents cares,

which usually offer extended hours, without the wait. At Mercy-GoHealth, 90 percent of the patients wait 30 minutes or less to see a provider. She compared that to the 60 minutes or more wait time at the ER. Urgent cares are also more affordable. Copeland said the average ER bill is $2,032, while the average urgent care bill is $193. Means said Access works hard to be available for people who need medical care. “Patient convenience, open access and extended hours are the key drivers in the urgent care business,” she said.

THE ARTS
The arts foster a sense of community Because art transcends bias, local arts have a unique ability to bring a community together, said Audra Faust, founder of The Bethany Stage. The Bethany Stage offers music, dance and acting classes and also puts on several community theatre productions each year. “I have witnessed firsthand at our small community theatre how art has united families, broken down walls and created lasting friendships,” she said. Painter Rachel Comingdeer said not everyone fits in a mold. “Hopefully, local arts can provide unity in bringing a community together, no matter who you are or where you’ve come from,” she said. “It can inspire both old and young to think outside the box and feel confident in who they are, no matter how unique.” The arts are welcoming not only to

those who are visiting, but to the children who grow up in our communities, Comingdeer said. “I believe it shows we care about the community that we live in and are leaving to them.” Faust said the arts are really a life skill that needs to continue to be taught to children. “They aren’t just developing skills for the stage, but for living their life with confidence in relationships and in their future occupation,” she said. Theatre, such as the Bet hany Stage, Another way the arts are beneficial above, helps bring a comm unity together . to the community is they help local small businesses to thrive, Faust said. where “We have families and patrons who our places of community foster discord and prejudice, the arts bring drive in from all over greater OKC, people together from all journeys in it’s surrounding cities and even from life. farther away for classes or produc“Art and specifically performing tions,” she said. “They eat and shop arts creates community, confidence here.
