More than 30 teams participated in the Chamber's "Cornhole Challenge". It was a fun-rsising event that embraced competition and distancing, in an outdoor setting. Participants also got to enjoy the fare of Broke Brewing Company, a new craft brewer in our NWOKC Community.
Chamber adds value Often good things come after difficult times. That’s how the Northwest Oklahoma City Chamber sees it as it emerges from 2020. The forced pause of the pandemic created an opportunity to reflect and develop many new programs that will continue to serve its members and the community into the future. With the launch of a new NWOKC Chamber Community App, citizens and visitors can easily see all events and activities, locate needed services, and even find new businesses and build loyalty while earning PERKS and savings with them. Communicating through targeted text-messaging is another way the Chamber is utilizing technology. Northwest NOW, the Chamber’s new public and community affairs video program, gives people a chance to share interesting stories and information about the people and places. These videos also take advantage of the many social media platforms that chamber members, and the community at large utilize. “2020 was tough, but it gave us an opportunity to refine our programs and create increased value for our members. We know many businesses are unable to attend events, so while in-person activities are still part of our
mix, we’ve enhanced our advocacy and community development, as well as marketing and promotions for our communities and our members,” said Jill McCartney, Northwest Oklahoma City Chamber CEO. “Of course, finding people with common interests remains an important component of relationship building and we’re finding new ways to help our members create meaningful, and fruitful connections,” McCartney added. As more in-person events and activities resume, the introduction and increased use of digital on-demand learning is an aspect of convenience that will continue, because it lets members access resources on their own schedule. Another new program to emerge in 2021 is “The OVATION”, a recognition that highlights members for their actions in overcoming major challenges, harnessing innovation and adaptability, and encouraging and supporting others. YMCA: Keeping members safe during a pandemic As a business focused on the health of not only members and participants, but the entire community, the YMCA of Central Oklahoma has always had high standards of cleaning and disinfecting processes. throughout the day, individual stations for activities and as much outdoor time as possible, she said. “This practice continued through to our traditional Summer Day Camp and then to our YMCA ECamp for the fall school semester where we are helping to facilitate virtual learning,” Klein said. “We also adopted similar guidelines for our youth sports program.” When the fitness centers were able to reopen, the YMCA required all those who entered the building to have their temperature taken and asked all to wear a mask or face covering, with the exception of during physical activity. “We limited the number of participants in our group exercise classes and made some equipment unavailable to allow for social distancing,” Klein said. “As the pandemic has lingered, we continue to follow these requirements and continually reassess to ensure we are a safe place for all those visiting the Y.” For more information about the Y and safety protocols, or to join, visit ymcaokc.org.

OKC’s trails network: There’s even more to come Oklahoma City’s 80-mile trails network is one of the crown jewels of the community’s growing outdoor scene – and more trails are coming. Trails along Oklahoma River and our three largest lakes – Draper, Hefner and Overholser – are the backbone, but it’s new and future trails that unlock the network’s potential for recreational cyclists and commuters. MAPS 3, Oklahoma City’s penny sales tax funding debt-free quality-of-life projects, paid for the Lake Draper Trail, West River Trail and the groundbreaking Will Rogers Trail, the first urban trail in OKC. The West River Trail and Will Rogers Trail offer connections to the Oklahoma River – the West River Trail from the Overholser Trails, and the Will Rogers Trail from the Bert Cooper Trails around Lake Hefner. Along with the Overholser-Hefner Trail connecting the lakes, the connecting trails give cyclists, runners and others an unbroken loop connecting downtown to west and northwest Oklahoma City, protected from vehicle traffic. OKC voters have signed off on funding for more trails providing an expanded network. The Better Streets, Safer City bond package funds the Greenway Trail, which will connect the Katy Trail in northeast Oklahoma City to

the West River Trail. The partially-funded Deep Fork Trail will run through the heart of OKC to connect to the South Grand Avenue Trail. Then MAPS 4, MAPS 3’s successor, includes a trail connecting Lake Stanley Draper to the Oklahoma River Trail. It adds up to a system that helps cyclists safely navigate Oklahoma City, whether it’s for recreation or active commuting.

‘Purposeful’ design leads to innovative learning at Capps When the Putnam City School Board decided to build a new middle school to replace the aging Capps Middle School, they knew it had to be a special school of the future.
