History at OCU!

HISTORY History is a process of discovery and creation. Far more than a dry recitation of names, dates and places, history is an intense study of how societies and scholars construct our understanding of the past. Contact us to begin your adventure!

Why Study History at OCU? History comes alive at OCU as students put themselves in the minds and times of the people they study, and to practice the skills and habits of historians. Such experiences teach students to appreciate the joys and challenges of other cultures in the past and present, to understand the elements of culture that shape everyday life.

Enhance your critical thinking and investigatory skills Investigating the Past, Informing the Future

Research is a vital part of the study of history, and OCU students learn to find, analyze and interpret a variety of materials, from shipping manifests to personal diaries, from international treaties to music lyrics. Our students learn to imagine other cultures and eras, reflect on and comprehend human struggles, and become adept at assessing evidence and weighing conflicting interpretations of history.

Critical Thinking Skills

Employers routinely cite their need for and appreciation of employees with strong training and practice in reading and communicating diverse materials from a variety of sources; the ability to synthesize, evaluate, and interpret evidence; and to communicate that work clearly and coherently to a non-specialist audience. OCU’s History program helps develop these important skills.

Expanding Your World: Where can History at OCU take you! To gain a global perspective beyond classroom instruction and discourse, you may choose from a full semester abroad and shorter experiences, including Greece, Rome, Austria, etc. to internships at the local and national level. History graduates have gone into a variety of different careers from law school to K-12 teaching. Graduates have gone onto prestigious programs such as Harvard, Chicago, Duke, Emory, and Georgetown.
