Biology faculty frequently offer field intensive courses in domestic and international destinations. Recent groups have traveled to Alaska, the Rio Grande Valley, Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons, the Gulf Coast, and Costa Rica. Mass communications students gain valuable, hands-on experience through The Campus Newspaper, MediaOCU.com, and students gain real-world television experience in a project-based experience called Press Play. Students in many disciplines have the opportunity to pursue undergraduate research and present their findings at regional and national meetings. Many students complete a semester-long internship where they spend time at local businesses, nonprofit organizations, and hospitals where they can apply what they have learned in the classroom to real-life experiences. The School of Visual Arts has regular artist workshops, lectures, projects, and events, as well as exhibitions in the Hulsey Gallery, an active Art Club, rotating artwork in the Norick Art Center hallways, active artist residencies in the studios, film screenings, and more.

OCU musical theatre students were invited to join alumna Kristin Chenoweth on stage during closing night of her show “My Love Letter to Broadway.” Chenoweth accepted an appointment as Artist in Residence at her alma mater, OCU, beginning in April 2020. Bass School of Music hosts more than 250 staged performances each year. The Ann Lacy School of American Dance and Entertainment presents The American Spirit Dance Company’s “Home for the Holidays - A gift of American Dance” in the fall; the “Broadway Revue” featuring tap, jazz, and musical theater-style dances in the spring; and periodic tours to perform in domestic and international venues. The Ann Lacy School also produces The Student Choreography Show, the OCU Pep Dancers, and the Spirit of Grace Liturgical Dancers. OCUNYC is Oklahoma City University’s New York City alumni chapter. Each spring, OCUNYC hosts a Spring Break NYC workshop. The 3-day intensive is open to any student at Oklahoma City University who is interested in the performing arts.

All business students have access to the Bloomberg Terminals, which are resources for premier financial data used to monitor and analyze market data. Each student can become certified and benefit from integrating theory with real-world practice, while setting themselves apart in a competitive job market. Business students can join the Investment Club, where students are able to invest real money into the stock market. For the past 14 years, the Investment Club, which includes one undergraduate team and one graduate team, have been loaned $200,000 at the beginning of each fall semester by alumnus and business school namesake Herman Meinders. The club has been profitable and has generated thousands of dollars in scholarship for 14 years in a row. A valuable research opportunity available to business undergraduates is the opportunity to work in the Steven C. Agee Economic Research & Policy Institute, working with some of Oklahoma City’s largest corporations. Clients for the institute include the City of Oklahoma City, Devon Energy, the Cherokee Nation, the Chickasaw Nation, and the Oklahoma City Thunder, just to name a few. Internship opportunities are available for each academic discipline.

SERVICE Learners

Left: Meinders Business students Misael Martinez and Joe Wathika participated in the opportunity to travel to Taiwan where they taught at a summer camp, helped out with building improvements, and learned about another culture. OCU-Doers is a program funded by the Doers Cultural and Education Foundation, where a team of OCU students travel to Taiwan for two weeks to be paired with Taiwanese college students to work with elementary-age children in a summer cultural exchange program. OCU hosts “Miracle Marathon,” a six-hour dance marathon in partnership with Children’s Miracle Network. Every year, OCU students are presented with several opportunities to go on mission trips both domestic and abroad. Several recent mission trip destinations include Alaska, Belize, Bolivia, and the Bahamas. Service learning at Oklahoma City University gives students opportunities to apply what they are learning in the classroom through service in a community-based setting. Since the inception of the service-learning program in 2002, OCU has offered 562 servicelearning courses. OCU offers the World House Scholars program, which aspires to be a premier liberal arts program for preparing students to engage in lives of social and ecological responsibility. A student with any major of study that is interested in issues of social or ecological justice has the opportunity with this scholarship to integrate those interests with their major.
