OKLAHOMA CITY UNIVERSITY BASS SCHOOL OF MUSIC | SCHOOL OF THEATRE
2021 – 2022 SEASON
WELCOME! We are thrilled to open our doors to in-person audiences for a bright new season of thought-provoking works, acclaimed guest artists and extraordinary performances! For more than 110 years, OCU has expanded its mission of creating quality learning experiences and compelling productions of the highest quality, enriching our campus and community. Over these past months, we’ve come to realize more than ever how vital it is to use creativity to connect with others. Conveying ideas and emotions, telling stories, and celebrating shared experiences on stage helps strengthen the bonds of interconnectivity. We are honored that our performing arts programs continue to gain national recognition. Students from the OCU School of Theatre consistently win awards for the quality of their work in acting and design. Our Oklahoma Opera and Music Theater Company has won 11 National Opera Association Production Awards since 2012 and this year celebrates its 70th consecutive season — the longest unbroken run of opera and music theater seasons on any campus in the world! In addition, Playbill magazine has recognized Oklahoma City University in back-to-back years as a “Big 10” school for training performers for Broadway, and in 2020-21 praised our creative problem-solving, teamwork, and innovative strategies in “attacking this challenging time head on, using it as a call to explore beyond the traditional.” On these stages — and in our classrooms, practice rooms, and studios — decades of dreams have been nurtured and taken flight. We take great pride in the success of our alumni in all areas of the arts across the globe as they contribute engaged, innovative work on stage, behind the scenes, and beyond. You, the audience, continue to play a vital role as we prepare these young leaders to bring insight into the human experience. On behalf of the students, alumni, faculty and staff of the School of Theatre and Wanda L. Bass School of Music at Oklahoma City University, thank you for joining us as we celebrate our 2021-22 season, a century of excellence in education and a legacy of artistry. Sincerely,
MARK PARKER, DEAN Ann Hundley Hoover Chair School of Theatre & Wanda L. Bass School of Music Oklahoma City University
FLORENCE GILLAM HOBIN BIRDWELL SEPTEMBER 3, 1924 - FEBRUARY 15, 2021 IN MEMORIAM The Bass School of Music is dedicating its season to the extraordinary Professor Emerita Florence Birdwell, an Oklahoma City University alumna who served as a professor of voice, a mentor, a friend, and an inspiration. During her 67 years on the OCU faculty, her students have won Tony Awards, Emmy Awards, Miss America crowns, and acclaim on stages around the world. A 2015 feature in The New York Times called her a “fearsome fairy godmother” to Kelli O’Hara and Kristin Chenoweth, both nominated that year for a Tony Award in the category of Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical. Her praises were first sung on a national stage during a tearful speech in accepting the 1999 Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical, when Kristin Chenoweth thanked “my mentor, Florence Birdwell from Oklahoma City University, for teaching me how to sing!” In her 2015 acceptance speech after winning the Tony Award, O’Hara also offered praise: “I come from a place far away and there’s a little teacher there, and two of us tonight, Kristin and I, share her. Florence Birdwell, thank you. Yes, Florence — thank you!” A member of the Oklahoma Higher Education Hall of Fame and recipient of an Honorary Doctor of Musical Arts from Oklahoma City University, she credited her success as a teacher to techniques learned while overcoming a throat injury at the age of 21, the same year she had been invited to join the chorus of the Metropolitan Opera and to audition for the role of Laurey for the movie Oklahoma! The injury ended the possibility of a singing career. The knowledge she gained in her rehabilitation, however, opened the door to an illustrious life of helping others find their voice. “As she often said, she taught voice and she taught life,” said Mark Parker, dean of OCU’s Wanda L. Bass School of Music. “Teachers are judged on the successes of their students. On that measure alone, I know no more successful teacher than Florence Birdwell.”
The Chickasaw Nation proudly supports performing arts and cultural education throughout Oklahoma. Working with community partners, these efforts create a variety of forums that give voices to artists and provide a stage for cultural learning and creative expression to benefit all.

EXPLORING “BEYOND THE TRADITIONAL” The Wanda L. Bass School of Music at Oklahoma City University is one of the most innovative arts incubators in the nation, recognized as a successful catalyst for community engagement and creativity. Our instrumental, opera, and music theater ensembles present works from the classic to the cutting edge, including frequent regional and world premieres. This longstanding commitment to the music of our time was recognized by ASCAP and the American Orchestra Leagues with the national Adventurous Orchestral Programming Award. Playbill magazine has honored Oklahoma City University in back-to-back years as a “Big 10” school for training performers for Broadway, and in 2020-21 praised our creative problem-solving, teamwork, and innovative strategies in “attacking this challenging time head on, using it as a call to explore beyond the traditional.” Mezzo-soprano Brennan Martinez as Ruth in the 2017 regional premiere of Nico Muhly’s Dark Sisters: An American Opera.
2020-2021 MAINSTAGE SEASON ENRON
BY LUCY PREBBLE OCTOBER 28 – 31, 2021 Burg Theatre Enron is a theatrical and explosive tale of the collapse of a company. Inspired by real events, but told as a sprawling, dynamic tragedy, full of grand use of song, dance and theatre technology, the play follows CEO and anti-hero Jeffrey Skilling through the journey of Enron’s rise and fall. Skilling’s basic idea is to trade in energy as well as supply it. But, as his dreams expand to include video, internet and even the weather, the gap between stock market perception and reality grows ever greater. As profits fail to materialize, the market loses confidence, and Skilling’s schemes are revealed for what they are: a fraudulent fantasy.
ROE
BY LISA LOOMER DECEMBER 9 – 12, 2021 Burg Theatre Roe is the human story behind of one of the most consequential and controversial Supreme Court decisions ever. Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 case that legalized abortion, is still fiercely debated over forty years later. In this incisive play, acclaimed writer Lisa Loomer cuts through the headlines and rhetoric to reveal the divergent personal journeys of lawyer Sarah Weddington and plaintiff Norma McCorvey (“Jane Roe”) in the years following the fateful decision. In turns shocking, humorous, and poignant, Roe reflects the polarization in America today while illuminating the heart and passion each side has for its cause.

MARISOL
BY JOSÉ RIVERA FEBRUARY 3 – 6, 2022 Burg Theatre MARISOL is a play of magical realism, telling the story of a young Puerto Rican woman, who has elevated herself into the world of publishing, while continuing to live alone in the dangerous Bronx neighborhood of her childhood. After surviving an attack on the street, Marisol is visited by her guardian angel who informs her that she can no longer serve as Marisol’s protector because she has been called to join the revolution already in progress against an old and senile God. The war in heaven spills over into New York City, reducing it to a smoldering urban wasteland. Alone, without her protector, Marisol begins a nightmare journey into this new war zone. With the apocalypse well under way, the angels have traded in their wings for Uzis and wear leather motorcycle jackets and fatigues. As the action builds to a crescendo, the masses of homeless and displaced people join the angels in the war to save the universe.
SCHOOL FOR LIES
BY DAVID IVES MARCH 31 - APRIL 3, 2022 Burg Theatre
It’s 1666 and the brightest, wittiest salon in Paris is that of Celimene, a beautiful young widow so known for her satiric tongue she’s being sued for it. Surrounded by shallow suitors, whom she lives off of without surrendering to, Celimene has managed to evade love since her beloved husband died—until today, when Frank appears. A traveler from England known for his own coruscating wit and acidic misanthropy, Frank turns Celimene’s world upside-down, taking on her suitors, matching her barb for barb, and teaching her how to live again. (Never mind that their love affair has been engineered by a couple of well-placed lies.) This wild farce of furious tempo and stunning verbal display, all in very contemporary couplets, runs variations on Molière’s The Misanthrope, which inspired it.
