WELCOME! On behalf of the students, alumni, faculty and staff of the Bass School of Music and the School of Theatre at Oklahoma City University, thank you for being part of our extraordinary 2020-21 season. Thank you for joining us as we celebrate more than a century of excellence in education and a legacy of artistry. During these challenging times, we realize more than ever how vital it is to use creativity to connect with others and to express our hope for the future. We are determined to approach the season with caution and to create the safest possible setting for students and patrons with performances that lend themselves to social distancing, to be live-streamed from campus to a global audience. We are honored to join artists throughout history who continued to create and collaborate amid challenging times. We remain committed to our mission to create quality learning opportunities and offer compelling, artistic performances while teaching students the skills needed to be successful in their degree path and model how to creatively adapt to our current realities and the challenges to be faced in the future. On these stages — and in our classrooms, practice rooms and studios — decades of dreams have been nurtured and taken flight. You, the audience, continue to play a vital role as we prepare these young adults to be leaders in the performing arts and beyond, bringing insight into the human experience. We thank you again for your support and look forward to the day we can reunite on campus! Sincerely,

020421

Mainstage

The School of Theatre typically offers a four-show Mainstage season, alongside an L. Bass School of Music. The mainstage season is a mix of fully realized production with our professional partners. Our webcasts will stream at the link below. okcu.edu/theatre/theatreocu

Black Girl, Interrupted February 12–13 By LyaNisha Gonzalez Directed by W. Jerome Stevenson Tough and dedicated New York Times reporter Riley Jones is chasing the story of Sasha Green, a soldier whose brutal death has been covered up by the military. As she gets closer and closer to the disturbing truth, Riley must question her motivations for telling Sasha’s story and confront her own painful past, including her fraught relationship with her soon-tobe ex-husband and the price she has paid to pursue justice for others. A compelling new drama, “Black Girl, Interrupted” investigates whose story gets lost when we focus on a woman’s death rather than her life.

The Revolutionists February 26–27 By Lauren Gunderson Directed by Lisi Levy Four beautiful, badass women lose their heads in this irreverent, girlpowered comedy set during the French Revolution’s Reign of Terror. Playwright Olympe de Gouges, assassin Charlotte Corday, former queen (and fan of ribbons) Marie Antoinette, and Haitian rebel Marianne Angelle hang out, murder Marat, and try to beat back the extremist insanity in 1793 Paris. This grand and dream-tweaked comedy is about violence and legacy, art and activism, feminism and terrorism, compatriots and chosen sisters, and how we actually go about changing the world. It’s a true story. Or total fiction. Or a play about a play. Or a raucous resurrection … that ends in a song and a scaffold.

Measure for Measure April 16–17 By William Shakespeare Directed by D. Lance Marsh Vienna is teeming with brothels and loose morality, but the Duke doesn’t want to use his authority to clean up the city. He departs, dressed as a friar, leaving his deputy, the saintly and religious Angelo, in charge. Angelo is at first reluctant, but he soon begins to abuse his new power to satisfy his lust for a young nun Isabella who pleads for the life of her brother. The disguised Duke discovers Angelo’s treachery and plots a complicated trap to reveal his assistant’s vice. This incredibly timely period comedy that skewers hypocrisy and probes the limits of the obsessive sides of all the central characters is William Shakespeare’s #metoo play!

PROJECT 21

Music for the 21st Century The composers of Project 21 present an eclectic lineup of new works for a socially distanced world! Celebrating its 24th season under the direction of founder Dr. Edward Knight, the student consortium will present Thursday evening concerts of OCU-created world premieres. In honor of the 250th birthday of Ludwig van Beethoven, composers will collaborate with pianists from the studio of Dr. Sergio Monteiro to create new interpretations of Anton Diabelli’s original waltz tune that inspired Beethoven’s renowned Diabelli Variations. Concert streaming at 7:30 p.m. on the composers’ YouTube channels, via tiny.cc/ocuproject21.

LIVESTREAM CONCERTS January 28 February 10 March 4 March 18 (Dance/Movement)

March 25 (Electronic) April 1 (New Diabelli Variations, with piano studio of Dr. Sergio Monteiro)

‘ONE YEAR’ COLLABORATION Recorded works by Project 21 composers are featured through Feb. 19 in the “One Year” exhibition at the Nona Jean Hulsey Gallery in OCU’s Norick Art Center. The installation is a curated selection of Oklahoma City artist Kiona Millirons’ letters of grief and love to her sister Amber, a librarian who was shot and killed Dec. 11, 2018, while leaving work.

CHORAL CONCERTS Our 2020-21 season of socially distanced choral works—from the classic to the cutting edge—will be broadcast via livestream by our award-winning choruses, under the direction of Dr. Randi Von Ellefson and Professor Tony Gonzalez. CLOSER THAN EVER (1989)

February 20–21 Closer Than Ever features self-contained songs dealing with topics such as working couples, aging, mid-life crisis, second marriages, and unrequited love. Maltby and Shire based many of the songs on the real-life experiences of themselves and their friends. “Richard Maltby’s skill as a lyricist allows for plenty of wit and humour as well as pathos, while Shire’s melodies can be uplifting as well as sad. The interesting thing about each song here is that it has a self-contained story as one would expect from Maltby, who is a Tony Award-winning director as well as a lyricist, while Shire won an Oscar for ‘It Goes Like it Goes’ from the film Norma Rae.”  —British Theatre Guide Spotlight Musical Revue  •  Burg Theatre Music: David Shire  •  Lyrics: Richard Maltby, Jr. David Herendeen, Director  •  Chuck Koslowske, Music Director

OKLAHOMA OPERA & MUSIC THEATER THE CONSUL (1950)

March 8–9

As an Italian citizen living in the U.S. during World War II, Menotti was classified as an “enemy alien” and created the work to convey the despair of refugees fleeing war and its aftermath. OCU’s production sets the story in 2021 amid an increasingly bureaucratic world where human lives can be reduced to paperwork and filed away. “The Consul is a nightmare-thriller of an opera, set in a police state where the central character, Magda, is trying to flee the country and in need of a visa from the unseen and unheard consul. It does feel like Puccinian verismo, albeit with contemporary touches and a fantasy element that sits beside the thriller tension. But mostly this is music-theatre of unnerving power—with a climactic Act 2 aria that stops the show, your heart and your disbelief.”  —Michael White, The Independent (London) Mainstage Opera  •  Kirkpatrick Auditorium Music, Book & Lyrics: Gian-Carlo Menotti Karen Coe Miller, Director  •  Jan McDaniel, Music Director

SPRING AWAKENING (2006)

April 23–24 Spring Awakening is the story of a group of teenagers — children in the eyes of their parents, teachers, and religious leaders — who struggle through adolescence in a society that denies them freedom of thought and information about their changing bodies, and treats their sexual curiosity as sinful. The original Broadway production of the rock musical won eight Tony Awards. “A straight shot of eroticism steamed open …, and Broadway, with its often puerile sophistication and its sterile romanticism, may never be the same.”  —Charles Isherwood, The New York Times Mature themes, including self-harm, sexual content and explicit language. Mainstage Musical  •  Kirkpatrick Auditorium Music: Duncan Sheik  •  Book and Lyrics: Steven Sater Karen Coe Miller, Director  •  Matthew Mailman, Music Director Sheri Hayden, Choreographer

THEATRE SEASON SPONSORSHIPS Embarking upon our new season, we are reminded of Stella Adler’s reflection on the role of theatre in society: “It is the place people come to see the truth about life and the social situation. The theatre is a spiritual and social X-ray of its time. The theatre was created to tell people the truth about life.” Although plans for our 2020-21 season have changed—and may continue to evolve—we remain committed to the vital power of theatre to serve as both mirror and window to our time. We strive to model to our students the value of resiliency and responsible creative problem-solving. We are grateful for your visionary support and look forward to thanking you in person. This season’s offerings include classic and contemporary plays directed by our acclaimed School of Theatre faculty.

CREATING A LASTING LEGACY

A bequest is a gift from your estate: a transfer of cash, securities or property made through your estate plans. You may make a bequest in your will or living trust leaving a portion of your estate to the university, or by designating Oklahoma City University as a beneficiary of your retirement account or life insurance policy. Remembering us with a bequest will help sustain and strengthen the university in years to come. Some of the advantages of creating a bequest include: • You retain control of and use of your assets during your lifetime • You may modify your bequest if your circumstances change • Your gifts to the University are exempt from federal estate taxes • You have the satisfaction of knowing you have provided for OCU’s future • We will be able to thank you now and recognize your generosity.
