90th
Anniversary Season
school of theatre
greetings In November of 1922, The Play Shoppe of Oklahoma City University opened as a single room boasting a stage, curtain, and a few lights. The Oklahoma City University College Players adopted this space as their home in order to perform a series of One Act Plays. The inaugural season included three one-act pieces: Maker of Dreams (OLIPHANT DOWN), The Loving Cup (ALICE BROWN), and Our Aunt from California (MADALENE BARNUM). This is the foundation of the legacy that we proudly claim today. The following year, the season doubled in size to over seven one-act plays and a handful of staged readings. Inspired by this rapid growth, in 1924, just two years after opening its doors, The Play Shoppe moved into its new building and produced its first full-length play: The Charm School (ALICE DUERMILLER). For several years, Those Famous College Players … as they had come to be known … continued to produce season after season of one full-length production and a series of One-Act shows. In 1932, 10 years after its inception, Those Famous College Players produced Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest for the first time as part of a series of three full-length plays. Eighty years later, we are proud to be performing this once again as a part of our series of eight fulllength play Mainstage Season. My how we’ve grown! Over the years, our students have been prepared for and propelled into the professional industry as actors, directors, company managers, educators, stage managers, and designers. We currently have students residing and working in all four corners of the United States, as well as overseas on international tours. From New York to LA and throughout several scattered locations in between and beyond, our alumni are continually working, learning, and growing as theatre artists. We look to you—our loyal audience—in gratitude for your support of our strong theatrical legacy that has flourished at Oklahoma City University. You have helped sustain our efforts with your scholarships, sponsorships, and patronage. You have encouraged our students by your attendance and your applause. We hope you find this 90th season to be amongst one of our best. Help us sustain and build upon this excellence by supporting our season, sharing our story with others, and ensuring our future through your continued support. With Thanks, Mark Parker, Dean Oklahoma City University School of Theatre
