CRAFTY WAREHOUSE
Thousands of Hobby Lobby warehouse workers toil in heat among potentially infected coworkers without paid sick leave. By Peter J. Brzycki Every weekday morning while most Oklahomans are still fast asleep, nearly 5,000 employees pass through the doors at the massive Hobby Lobby distribution complex in southwest Oklahoma City and scan the code on their badges, clocking in for work. The sun is yet to rise, but it’s a warm and humid July morning. And inside, the unair-conditioned warehouses are already steamy. As the legions file in at 5 a.m., they learn how long they’ll be expected to stay, driven by the total number of orders their group must fill. On this Thursday, when outside temperatures are set to eclipse 100 humid degrees Fahrenheit, workers in sprawling Building 2 are informed they will be working around 10 hours, which means quitting time will come at 3:30 p.m. rather than the standard 1:30 p.m. The next day is a Friday, customarily one of the busiest days of the week; employees will be back at 5 a.m. with the strong likelihood of a 10- to 12-hour shift on another day over 100 degrees. Because not everyone returned after a monthlong forced furlough and many others have taken jobs at the Amazon Fulfillment Center near the airport, there are scores of open jobs. The result is the current workforce is left to handle the multitude of orders from stores experiencing high demand from Americans with copious free time forced upon them by the COVID-19 virus.

As the Hobby Lobby campus is approached by car, the full scale is difficult to register. The dozen warehouse buildings are low to the ground and seem to stretch out forever, so large and spread out the only way to have more than two in your field of view is via a helicopter or airplane. But with each being set back from the main roads with multiple entrances and signs, the impression is not particularly overwhelming. Yet Building 2 — the company’s first mega-warehouse — is almost 2 million

square feet alone, the equivalent of 35 football fields under one massive U-shaped roof. Employees park in the center, and hundreds of trucks dock all along the outside perimeter, some dropping off big product shipments in bulk, others dispatched with orders destined for one of 900 stores as far away as Washington, Maine and Florida. In all, the company has more than 10 million square feet of space on nearly 1,000 acres between Will Rogers World Airport and the fast-growing bedroom communities of Mustang and Yukon. Every single item sold by Hobby Lobby and sister company Mardel come into and then out of these warehouses, most of it imported from China. Even as the company continues its aggressive nationwide expansion, there are no plans for regional distribution centers. The complex is one that many will never see and configured in such a way that few will recognize Hobby Lobby as the largest private employer in Central
Oklahoma. Most are surprised to learn the company employs almost four times the number as does Devon Energy in its landmark 50-story downtown skyscraper 10 miles to the east. In 2018 alone, the company generated over $5 billion in revenue.

Carla (name changed to protect her identity) has been working in Building 2 for several years but increasingly dreads her job. Although Hobby Lobby provides masks and gloves at the entrances, few wear either. We spoke with a dozen Hobby Lobby warehouse workers who all reported that only 10-20 percent of the thousands of employees wear masks. Carla worries about catching COVID-19 but is sympathetic toward her coworkers.
“It can get incredibly hot in there, and most people are working very hard,” she said. “The tasks require walking several miles every day and lifting heavy boxes. We have production quotas, so we have to work fast. The masks make you sweat, and it’s not as easy to breathe.” Like the majority of those in the warehouses, Carla is a “puller” receiving orders from stores and briskly walking long distances with her cart to retrieve the necessary items before placing the boxes on the massive conveyor system for shipment. It’s hard, frantic work, especially in the excessive heat of the summer months. Carla carries her own bandages and antibiotic ointment due to frequent injuries from box cutters and paper cuts. Pullers are a very diverse lot. Many are younger people not far removed from high school, but a good percentage are over 40 as well. There are slightly more women than men, all of varying races, colors and creeds.

Amid this mix of thousands of people working relatively close together in enclosed spaces, Hobby Lobby does not perform body temperature checks upon entry, although the company does employ workers dedicated to sanitizing surfaces throughout the day. Starting at 5 a.m. means the 30minute lunch interval comes at 9:30 a.m. with a few 15-minute breaks scattered throughout the day. Workers congregate in one of the many air-conditioned break rooms or sit outside to get fresh air. Many use this time to check their mobile phones, which are prohibited in the warehouses. Carla and most others have been hearing rumblings about several positive cases of COVID-19 in her own building. Workers from her zone have been transferred to others to cover for sick employees and then return to work alongside her. We spoke to Jennifer (not her real name), who recently came down with the virus and is certain she picked it up
at work. “I only go to work and home,” she said. “There is really no other place I could get it.” After a week of not feeling well, Jennifer finally went to be tested and received a positive result. She informed her manager, who immediately mandated a 14-day quarantine without pay. Any existing vacation pay would be applied instead. Jennifer later learned that there was no announcement within her work group about a positive case, although word of mouth flows freely on the warehouse floor. Fear runs rampant, but the people working there need every full paycheck. Unlike typical corporate settings, the warehouse workers are not connected to a companywide email system. In many ways, Hobby Lobby is oldschool; it famously eschews bar codes for inventory control, relying instead on physical counts. Instructions come one-on-one or
through occasional meetings in which large groups are gathered into a break room. Because of what many describe as a large communication void, there is a lot of gossip and speculation about what is happening around the campus, and many don’t believe they are getting the com-
g
plete story from the company. Most of those interviewed expressed concern about losing their jobs if they were to talk openly about the perceived problems. Carla casually mentioned that one of her primary concerns is that coworkers aren’t getting tested and in

the case of a positive result, might not tell managers, fearing a forced, unpaid 14-day quarantine.

With the aid of millions in taxpayer subsidies, in August of last year, online mega-retailer Amazon opened a 2.5 million square foot fulfillment center near Will Rogers World Airport. Although Amazon uses a regional distribution model, its facility is very
similar to those at Hobby Lobby with some key differences: 1) it is air-conditioned; 2) it utilizes thousands of robots to retrieve storage racks, thus greatly reducing many miles of walking for employees; and 3) it now offer two weeks’ paid sick leave. While pay and benefits are similar, the first two points led hundreds of Hobby Lobby warehouse workers to move to Amazon. And although the Seattle-based company has received criticism of its own for employee working conditions, the paid sick leave is another big point of differentiation.

Un fl a t t er i n g Pr e ss Over the last several years, Hobby Lobby has been the subject of a good deal of controversy. In 2012, citing religious beliefs, CEO David Green publically denounced the Patient Protection and Affordable Care
Act, specifically the provision that compa n ies prov ide access to contraception and the morni n g-a f t e r pi l l . Ultimately, the case went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, which narrowly ruled in the company’s favor. In the early 2000s and toward the establishment of a Museum of the Bible in Washington, D.C., Hobby Lobby began purchasing artifacts from Iraq and other countries in Middle East. In 2009, the company was warned that some of the items had likely been illegally looted. Ultimately, American courts required the return of many items and ordered a fine of $3 million. In April of this year, fragments of the Dead Sea Scrolls, which have been the centerpiece of the museum, were determined to be fakes. There have been several other successful legal actions brought against the company, resulting in the forfeiture of other artifacts. More recently, it made the news for refusing to close stores even in areas in which it was legally required to do
so, which resulted in citations in Denver and Dallas before being forced to shut down. Amid this controversy, owner David Green shared a letter with employees that spoke of his wife Barbara’s revelation. “In her quiet prayer time this past week, the Lord put on Barbara’s heart three profound words to remind us that He’s in control. Guide, Guard, and Groom,” Green reportedly said in the letter. “We serve a God who will Guide us through this storm, who will Guard us as we travel to places never seen before, and who, as a result of this experience, will Groom us to be better than we could have ever thought possible before now.” Many employees felt this view indicated why the company was not taking a more proactive role in protecting them during a pandemic. Warehouses also were kept in operation until March 26th before reopening along with Hobby Lobby’s stores in the first two weeks of May. Hobby Lobby did not respond to Oklahoma Gazette’s request for comment.

Jones’ mother reiterates alibi claim
JONES’ MOTHER: ‘My son Julius is not guilty of Mr. Howell’s murder’ by Tres Savage
Days after meeting with the family of 1999 murder victim Paul Howell, Oklahoma Attorney General Mike Hunter gathered media to reiterate “overwhelming evidence of guilt” against death-row inmate Julius Jones. Hunter released a document about Jones’ conviction and chronicled “key facts” he said are “being manipulated to fit a narrative in an orchestrated effort to get Mr. Jones off of death row and perhaps out of prison entirely.” “I’m here today as an advocate for the late Paul Howell and his family, and I am here to advocate for the justice that our legal system imposed,” Hunter said. “They are the victims in this case, make no mistake about it, and the pain of their loss is revisited with each misguided public appeal on Mr. Jones’ behalf.” Jones has maintained his innocence. As part of a campaign to support Jones, prominent athletes with Oklahoma ties have written Gov. Kevin Stitt letters this year asking for the first-term governor 8

to commute Jones’ death sentence. Hunter said a preponderance of evidence resulted in a jury convicting Jones beyond a reasonable doubt. “Julius Jones murdered Paul Howell in cold blood in front of his sister and daughters,” Hunter said somberly. “No celebrity imploration or profusion of misinformation will change that. The information we are releasing today is from the trial transcript, and it disproves every claim that he is innocent. I strongly encourage those calling for his commutation to read the compelling evidence in this document. Julius Jones had his day in court — numerous times.” Jones and his supporters have alleged bias in his original trial, and they have argued that another man who pleaded guilty in the deadly robbery, Chris Jordan, conspired to frame Jones.
‘Evidence overwhelmi n g ly est a b l i s h es Jones’ guilt’
The 12-page document Hunter referred to (embedded below) outlines the criminal investigation into Howell’s death, the arrest and conviction of Julius Jones, and failed appellate efforts on his behalf. The document refers to trial transcripts, notes that the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals found “overwhelming” evidence of Jones’ guilt in 2006 and says Jones — now 39 — also committed other armed robberies in 1999. One section of the document concludes: An eyewitness to the murder saw a red bandana over the shooter’s face. The murder weapon was found in attic space above Jones’ closet, wrapped in a red bandana. This bandana contains Jones’ DNA. The evidence overwhelmingly establishes Jones’ guilt. “Julius Jones is guilty,” Hunter said Monday to media members. “He murdered Paul Howell, and he needs to be held accountable.”
Members of Julius Jones’ family, his current legal team and a coalition of supporters believe otherwise. T. Sheri Dickerson, founder of the Oklahoma City chapter of Black Lives Matter, attended Hunter’s press conference and spoke to media immediately after. “It was consistent with what the attorney general and the prosecutors have been presenting. I still believe in Mr. Jones’ innocence,” said Dickerson, who emphasized that she was not speaking on behalf of Jones’ lawyers or his supporting coalition. “I’m speaking from probably a different aspect than other people. I am a daughter of someone who was murdered. Those that were held accountable were also given the death penalty, and that death penalty was literally commuted to life without parole.” Dickerson said she opposes the death penalty, and she said BLM OKC intends to keep commutation of Jones’ death sentence on its list of demands. About two hours after Hunter concluded his remarks, other supporters of Jones held their own press conference at Ebenezer Baptist Church. Madeline Jones-Davis, the mother of Julius Jones, read a statement. “First, I would like to say that nothing I am about to say is intended to prevail lives or dismiss the terrible tragedy that Mr. Paul Howell’s murder and the pain that his family is experiencing,” Jones-Davis said. “My son Julius is not guilty of Mr. Howell’s murder, and his conviction and death sentence is a terrible injustice.” Jones-Davis said she and her husband were home with their son on the 1999 evening when Howell was murdered. “On the day of the shooting, Julius arrived home to our house around 4 p.m. and stayed there until he went to bed hours after the murder was committed,” Jones-Davis said, noting that the children played Monopoly. “We ate spaghetti and cornbread. Julius and his father watched Dragonball Z.” But Hunter’s document citing trial and appellate transcripts states that two of Jones’ original attorneys chose not to raise his parents’ alibi because Jones “repeatedly” told them his family was mistaken and that he was not home. “Jones was ‘unequivocal that he was not at home with his parents, as his parents had described, with regard to the evening that Mr. Howell was murdered,’” the document states, quoting a March 2005 transcript. Nicole McAfee, director of policy and advocacy for the Oklahoma chapter of the ACLU, said she does not believe the information presented by Hunter earlier in the day. “We largely believe most of it is inaccurate,” McAfee said. “What we’re asking for now is a chance to refute that at the Pardon and Parole Board in a com-
mutation hearing. (…) We are asking for Julius to have a chance to tell that story.” Anthony Douglas, president of Oklahoma’s NAACP chapter, said racial bias played a role in Jones’ conviction. “Look at this case,” Douglas implored of Hunter and Stitt. “Don’t just execute him because he is a Black man and you’ve got some new drugs you want to test on a Black man.” One of Jones’ current attorneys, federal public defender Dale Baich, released a statement criticizing Hunter. “Julius has never denied that, in his youth, he committed several, non-violent petty thefts which he has regretted ever since. Prior to his arrest for the murder of Paul Howell, however, Julius had never committed or been charged with a violent crime. The attorney general’s allegations that Julius was a violent criminal as a youth are just that: allegations. Moreover, these are the same allegations of uncharged, and unproved conduct that the prosecution paraded before Julius’s jury 20 years ago to argue that he deserved to die,” Baich said. “It is disturbing that the attorney general would portray Julius as a violent black youth based on allegations never proved in court resemble the all-too familiar pattern of state actors disparaging the characters of Black victims of systemic racism and inequality to detract from, if not legitimize, what happened to them.” Baich has argued previously that the red bandana was planted in Jones’ house and tested positive for his DNA
owing to its location inside his house. Jones’ case was the focus of a 2018 episode of The Last Defense, a docuseries produced by ABC. After it aired, Jones’ case drew national attention.

Hunter: ‘I’m just doing my job’ Hunter reiterated the contents of a letter he wrote last week to the Oklahoma Pardon and Parole Board affirming a 2012 Attorney General’s Opinion that the board can recommend and the governor can grant commutation to those on death row. He took umbrage at prior statements from Jones’ legal team which speculated that he might argue a different interpretation. “There is a great deal of misinformation out there that we are dealing with,” Hunter said. “I can’t count the number of emails I have gotten (…) We’ve heard from a lot of celebrities. I know they believe they are doing the right thing based on what they have been told. I’m just not sure they have been told the right thing.” The Oklahoma Pardon and Parole Board has yet to decide whether to hold a hearing on Jones’ clemency application, which was filed in October. Asked about whether he anticipates criticism for challenging the claims of Jones’ advocates, Hunter said he was “just doing my job.” “This is a great job, but it’s a tough job. I’m not interested in any other jobs,” said Hunter, who was elected to the state’s top law enforcement position in 2018 after
being appointed to fill a 2017 vacancy. “There’s a reason why attorney generals don’t get elected to other things in this state, and that’s because you have to make a lot of tough decisions.” Hunter said Monday that he felt compelled to push back on “misinformation” about Jones’ case after meeting with Howell’s family. “I was moved by conversations I had with the family last week,” Hunter said. “They just don’t feel like there is anybody advocating on their behalf. They don’t feel like there is anybody reminding people that they are victims and that they shouldn’t have had to deal with this.” ND

When it was made public that recipients of Paycheck Protection Programs might not be released, people were outraged. When the names of PPP recipients were released to the public last week, there was even more outrage. In a joke so bad that professional comedians would not have dared write it into a script, the Ayn Rand Institute — named for “objectivist” philosopher, author and lionized capitalist Ayn Rand, whose laissezfaire politics stopped short of receiving social security benefits in
her old age — also took its share of between $350,000 and $1 million. Likewise, while thousands are still waiting to receive unemployment and back payments, Oklahoma Rep. Markwayne Mullin made sure to secure up to $1.35 million for his plumbing businesses (and up to another $700,000 for two other businesses), as nobody was using the bathrooms while they were locked away at home. Homeland’s parent company also took between $5 and $10 million because grocery stores were apparently on the verge of bankruptcy while restaurants were closed. But in perhaps the most egregious instance from Oklahoma, LifeChurch — definitely hanging onto its hundreds of millions by a wing and a prayer — raked in between $5 and $10 million because, as it is written in the prosperity gospel of Matthew, what’s God’s is God’s but maybe God will take some of what Caesar is having too.

One could say that Walmart is dangerous enough, and so is Del City. Put those two together and it’s already dicey, but toss a pandemic into the mix and odds are firmly against you returning completely unscathed. Add a trigger-happy offduty police officer working a security gig into the mix and that weekend shopping trip turns into a spinning roulette wheel in a game that might be played in Putin’s neighborhood. In a moment caught on cell phone video, a reported Langston police officer got into a scuffle with an alleged shoplifter, who broke free and drove away. Even though the reversing vehicle cleared the officer without endangering him, he decided to pull his pistol and — turning it sideways as he must always have done in his fantasies — emptied the entire clip at the fleeing driver in the crowded parking lot. The driver, who was wounded, was later arrested on a shoplifting complaint. Meanwhile, the police must still be “waiting for all the facts to come in”
to determine whether it’s a criminal act to endanger citizens by firing a dozen rounds into the distance while your own life isn’t imperiled. The case will most likely land on Oklahoma County District Attorney David Prater’s desk for a decision, but he might be too busy prosecuting vandals as terrorists these days to bother with an actual threat to public safety.
HOLY STICK Palo Santo Cocktail Bar + Kitchen brings a little bit of Palm Springs to Farmers Market District. By Brittany Pickering
On a deceptively quiet street at the corner of SW Second Street and S. Klein Avenue, 1203 SW Second St., behind Farmers Public Market and a couple doors down from The Loaded Bowl downtown sits Palo Santo, an airy, spacious bar offering the atmosphere of Palm Springs and the hominess, friendliness and materials of Oklahoma. Two Los Angeles expats, Brian and Bailey Butler, along with Bailey’s parents, Tony and Sheri Andrew, spent about three years talking about opening a bar. Tony and Sheri have lived in Oklahoma for the past 11 years, and Brian and Bailey spent the past decade or so working at bars and restaurants in LA. They wanted to open a space there, but the cost was prohibitive. They enjoyed their visits to Oklahoma and made the move so they could finally bring their dream to life. “We were excited about Oklahoma. It’s a cool, up-and-coming city,” Bailey said. “We really liked our visits here. We really liked the people. So this was a natural choice.” They chose the Farmers Market area because it felt right to be part of the rebirth of an emerging neighborhood. “We felt that we fit in this area just because it still has a lot of character left versus somewhere like Bricktown with the brickfront building with the glass, you know, the whole thing,” Bailey said. “So I hope we can keep some of that character and not change it too much.” Palo Santo Cocktail Bar + Kitchen is a bright, uncluttered space filled with Southwestern- and industrial-inspired seating, a pool table, a worn leather sofa and an L-shaped bar. The space’s high ceilings provide room for shelves with leafy plants and cacti and simple but interesting and effective light fixtures that give visitors the feeling of being outside without having to endure the whims of a punishing Oklahoma summer. Tony and Brian built the tables, booths and bar and did the renovation themselves. “We got to build it all together. Tony and I — mostly Tony; I was more like Tony’s little aid — we built pretty much everything in here,” Brian said. “We saved a bunch of money and put it to good use and opened at the wrong time.” They made the bar using large pieces
of wood and polished concrete. Brian said they wanted it to have three distinct regions: the patron side, a middle shared area and the work space. The wall behind the bar was constructed with aged fence panels in a diagonal pattern and adds a polished, designer feeling to the space. The renovation took six months, even with a few bumps along the way, and Palo Santo opened about five days before Oklahoma City shut down because of the COVID-19 pandemic. “Terrible timing,” Bailey said. “COVID made everything feel like very small setbacks in comparison.” They had to lay off some staff, but most returned after bars were allowed to reopen and business is slowly getting better. Brian has been running the kitchen and recently hired a cook, and Bailey has been running the bar. “The majority of our customers right now are all returning,” Brian said. Palo Santo serves elevated bar food inspired by Brian’s background cooking in LA and places he and Bailey have traveled. “Basically, every single dish on the menu is based on six ingredients,” Brian said. “The food is kind of mine and Bailey’s favorite bar food from around LA and around where we’ve traveled to and kind of getting things that are easy in your hands.” The menu includes dishes like a street dog with bacon, grilled chile and onions and spicy mayo; a pressed torta with carnitas, Oaxaca cheese, chile relish, jalapeños and sesame mayo; and tomato bread and burrata. They source a lot of their ingredients from the nearby farmers market and local shops like Super Cao Nguyen and Savory Spice. The flavorful fare seems less like

bar food and more like something you would get from your favorite food truck. You can have the most comfortable bar and fun atmosphere in town, but what makes or breaks a bar, even in OKC, is its signature drinks. Brain and Bailey collaborated and used their combined knowledge from years of working and drinking at bars in LA to create Palo Santo’s drink menu. “It’s based on delicious ingredients but making things simple, building our own syrups, making lots of flavors compounded so the bartenders aren’t making mixes; it’s all three or four ingredients, so it’s quick, it has lots of flavor, interesting spirits,” Brian said. “If it’s not selling, it comes off and something else goes on.” Besides staple favorites and wine, Palo Santo’s current bar offerings include its signature drink made with mezcal, pineapple, sencha (a type of green tea) and demerara; Mr. Jungle with white rum, Chartreuse green liqueur, mint, tepache (a fermented liquid made with the peel and rind of pineapples), lime and bitters; and Spiced Daisy with tequila, lime, jalapeño, cilantro and Curaçao liqueur. Like its food and drink menu, the bar’s name was inspired by the merging of cultures. “Palo Santo is a wood that they burn in South America for health and prosperity. It literally means ‘holy stick,’”
Bailey said. “The health and prosperity thing was great. It kind of went with our wood theme, and bartenders call being behind the bar being ‘behind the stick,’ so this is kind of like our holy stick, I suppose.” Palo Santo is open 5 p.m.-midnight Tuesday-Thursday and 5 p.m.-2 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays, but Brian plans on serving Saturday and Sunday brunch soon.

Violin
MAKER luthier noun
lu·thi·e r | \ ` lü-tē-ər , -thē-ər \ Definition of luthier: one who makes stringed musical instruments (such as violins or guitars)
Oklahoma Gazette: How did you get into the world of violin making, also known as being a luthier? Arsenios Corbishley: I got into violinmaking kind of by accident. I was a cellist and started working in a violin shop when I was 17. I worked there through college and a few years afterward, but nobody there had formal training. I went to the Chicago School of Violin Making in 2009 and finished in 2012 to learn how to make instruments. I have been working on my own in OKC since. OKG: On average, how long does it take to make a violin? Corbishley: I make new violins, violas and cellos as well as do repair and restoration work. If I were to only make new instruments, I could have one finished in a few months. On average, I make four to five instruments a year. OKG: You are creating these from scratch, including the varnish ... along with using techniques that are primarily done by hand? Corbishley: The instruments I make are handmade. All of the materials are hand-selected and aged at least 10 years. I model my instruments after classic masters, with a few variations for modern tastes.

Corbishley: The craft of violin making is really pretty subtle. Anyone can make a violin-shaped thing, and it will always sound like a violin. The devil is definitely in the details. My work has elements that tie each instrument to the next, but as an individual still relatively early in my career, I try to always improve the aesthetic as well as the performance and functionality of the instruments I make. OKG: What is most important when making an instrument, functionality or artistic expression? Corbishley: The instruments I make are foremost tools. They are utilized by musicians as a means to an end but rarely are the end in itself. While violins are beautiful in their own right, they require humans with the skill and passion to shape them into vehicles for expression. OKG: What music styles inspire you? Corbishley: I am a classically trained cellist, but you will rarely find that kind of music in my shop. I listen to everything from hip-hop to indie rock and folk, audiobooks, podcasts and silence. Most of my clients are classically trained or are bluegrass musicians.

Audio crash Music venues in Oklahoma struggle to stay alive so concerts can resume after the pandemic. By Daniel Bokemper In the wake of the pandemic, venues everywhere became uncharacteristically quiet. The live music industry was muted following a recommendation to avoid large social gatherings in midMarch. Postponed performances became indefinite if not canceled outright as the stark reality of COVID-19 emerged. An “optimistic” expectation of a poor concert season became a nightmare that could decimate live music for more than a year and a half. For music lovers, the pandemic is a bummer. For many independent venues, it will be their demise. With their primary source of revenue eliminated, venue owners have had no choice but to furlough or terminate their staff. Venues that qualified for EIDLs (Economic Injury Disaster Loans), PPP (Paycheck Protection Program) and
has adjusted in “the way a car crash acclimates after an accident comes to a stop.” What is known is that the circumstances are severe and the solutions are sparse. “We did temperature checks at the door, but with so many asymptomatic cases, it’s hard to know if someone has it. We’re a petri dish for something like this,” Nick Hampson, owner of 89th Street - OKC, said after his venue reopened and closed again after a spike of cases in late June. Without a downward trajectory of cases, most venues do not have the means to safely present shows. Preventive measures, such as a minimum of six feet between occupants, can cut a venue like Tower’s attendance and revenue by nearly 80 percent. These projections are not
world has to figure out how to stretch their oxygen to survive this.” The pandemic presents an unexpected roadblock to touring musicians as well. Even if a stage was in a relatively low-risk area, artists can put themselves and their audience in danger bounding from one city to the next. Chad Rodgers, manager of Cain’s Ballroom alongside his brother Hunter, broke down the scenario. “We came to the realization even if we could do a show, would the artist show up? Why would they travel on a tour bus crammed with a dozen people to one city that turns out to be a hotspot like Tulsa and then to another?” he asked. “They could end up spreading it themselves.” Hybrid venues like The Jones Assembly have an option to adapt in the
For every dollar spent on a ticket at a small venue, a total of $12.00 in economic activity is generated within our community on staffing, restaurants, hotels, travel, transportation and retail establishments. Jamie Fitzgerald state-backed OBRP (Oklahoma Business Relief Program) only received a momentary lifeline, if any at all. Acclimating to the pandemic has been nearly impossible for most venues. Chad Whitehead, the in-house talent buyer and operating partner of Tower Theatre and Ponyboy, found live music 24

promising for a business that routinely assumes a significant financial risk. “We have to go find some way to get a piece of regular business and acclimate to that, but it’s like breathing through a straw,” Whitehead said. “I don’t know how you acclimate to something unsustainable. Every venue in the
absence of large-scale concerts. Still, with the day-of cancellation of Orville Peck’s sold-out performance and countless other anticipated shows, the blow to their business is staggering. Graham Colton, co-owner of The Jones, felt its restaurant operation “allowed us to pivot and be flexible and reopen,” but

that the loss of its “third tier” of business is “unimaginable.”
MAKING MUSIC
Despite their plight, many venues have found some outlet to keep their mission alive. The Tower produced a series of livestream performances from Ponyboy shortly after it closed, with the intent to resume those performances later this summer. The Jones has allowed local musicians to perform at a distance on its outdoor patio Tuesdays through Fridays. Cain’s and 89th Street have found success through merchandise sales and fundraisers for their staff, with the former preparing to roll out a new series of merch later this year. However, livestreams are far from profitable, and merchandise sales are a minimal, temporary solution to longterm predicament. Unfortunately, the majority of independent venues will not reopen without meaningful federal assistance. The death of these venues will, in turn, have an irreparable impact on their local economy. Jamie Fitzgerald, veteran promoter and co-owner of DCF Concerts, elaborated on the domino effect this loss of industry spurred. “For every dollar spent on a ticket at a small venue, a total of $12.00 in economic activity is generated within our community on staffing, restaurants, hotels, travel, transportation and retail establishments,” she said. Despite the size of the venues DCF represents, ranging from Diamond Ballroom to BOK Center, its revenue has been reduced to $0 as of March 14.
The national talent-buying venture Whitehead contributes to, Patchwork Presents, was forced to suspend the majority of its operations. On the operational end of the spectrum, Fitzgerald explained that over 75 percent of the support staff involved in the industry are jobless, with the other percentage working with reduced pay.

to hone their craft. “This time will empower people at home to record even more, so when they get into a studio, they will be more efficient and organized at making music,” Trepagnier said.
Let the artists know, regardless of their size, that you’re thinking about them. Graham Colton
March 6, Michael Trepagnier opened his recording studio, Cardinal Song. Though Cardinal’s first months of operation were a stress-inducing “vacuum,” May and June brought promise with a consistent wave of bookings. Fortunately, the compulsion to create music is alive and well. “People just need music,” Trepagnier said. “They’re starved for it. Artists need to get in, create it, and put it into people’s hands in order to remain relevant and express themselves.” Time away from the live stage has forced artists and producers alike to contemplate distribution. At the very least, it has given them the opportunity
SAVING VENUES
As venues begin the journey of reopening, safety measures will likely encourage new streams of revenue and accessibility. Tower, for instance, is considering the prospect of a virtual ticket. Trepagnier theorized that because most large acts already mix video as a part of their sets, transmuting that process for a remote audience seems inherent. Unfortunately, a venue that does not exist will not be around to reap the benefits of such an option. National Independent Venue Association (NIVA) was founded at the onset of the pandemic by Dayna Frank, an independent promoter from Minneapolis, with the goal of compelling lawmakers to act and pass industry-saving legislation. DCF and the venues they represent were among the first of approximately 2,000 businesses to join the cause. “We have to fight for our livelihoods and save the small concert stages that have shined a light on every superstar in the world,” Fitzgerald said. “These 200 to 3,000 capacity clubs and theaters M U S I C O KGA Z E T TE .CO M | J U LY 1 5 , 2 0 2 0

are stepping stones to every huge commercial artist that plays arenas and stadiums. Unlike city and state-owned facilities, many will never reopen again without federal assistance throughout 2020 and 2021.” Without a government solution, Whitehead figures at least half of the independent venues nationwide will not reopen. This could be cataclysmic for the health of the community. “That might not sound like a big deal if you don’t go to concerts, but live cultural entertainment accounts for 4.5 percent of Oklahoma’s economy,” he said. “Boeing is 5 percent of the economy, so it’s almost a Boeing-level industry that is being impacted with very little support from the government.” The road for venues, promoters and musicians alike will feel, and in many cases be, insurmountable. There is an increasing fear that the collapse of small venues will lead to mass assimilation of stages by massive conglomerates like Live Nation, obliterating some of the

crucial platforms for smaller artists looking to make a name for themselves. Colton finds that one of the few solaces of this time is that music is inevitable. Just because an audience is not shouting for them, that does not mean it disappeared. “Let the artists know, regardless of their size, that you’re thinking about them,” he said. “Ask how you can support their music. Yes, we’re missing the direct connection with the live music part of it, but certainly those artists are still creating, and we still need to be there for it.” For more information on NIVA’s mission to rescue venues, visit saveourstages.com.

Growing distinction
One Oklahoma brand family took home eight first- or second-place awards in the second Oklahoma High Times Cannabis Cup. by Matt Dinger
The first Oklahoma High Times Cannabis Cup was a muddy and sweltering affair attended by tens of thousands of people. This year, the awards ceremony was two dudes livestreaming from a couch, which definitely felt more like the right vibe. Of the 10 categories, the clear winner was one brand family. ElectraLeaf; its grow operation, ALTVM; its Crispy’s and Swerve edibles; and the soon-tobe-launched Sweet Stuff line took 10 awards, either garnering the cup or a second-place finish in eight of them. The easier way of putting it is that it did not place in the pre-roll or hybrid flower categories, which it also entered. ElectraLeaf took cups home for its vape cartridges and roll-on topical while ALTVM’s Lilac Diesel flower won best sativa strain and its Crispy’s Iced Out Oreo Bar won the food edibles category. “I was shocked,” co-owner Pedro Sotomayor said. “We hoped and expected to win something because we were really proud of the entries that we put in, but to win 10 was a blessing and a testament to all the hard work we’ve put over the years. It was definitely a lot of hard work, even getting all that ready just to put it in. We have specialists, you know, in every department that do what they do really well. And we all come together as a team to bring it all

to market.” He said a large number of patients do not even realize that all of those products actually belong to the same cannabis brand family. “People that know just know by chance or so to speak,” he said. “We don’t necessarily always advertise it that way. But really, we just hope people follow the quality.” While ElectraLeaf is the brand that took the topicals cup, it also won a medal in the category for its line of women’s products soon to be released.
We hoped and expected to win something because we were really proud of the entries that we put in, but to win 10 was a blessing and a testament to all the hard work we’ve put over the years. topical with their Flawless Anti-Aging Moisturizing Cream, so that’s a new brand that we’re about to launch here sometime in August.” Sweet Stuff will also have pink and rose gold vape carts, among other products. “We’re also going to be donating a portion of the profits of that brand to organizations that support women’s rights and women’s equality,” Sotomayor said. This month, Crispy’s has released its Ruffled Cereal Bar, which is ridged potato chips and marshmallow drizzled with chocolate. Meanwhile, the Swerve brand, which took second place in food edibles for its Lights Out Indica & Melatonin Gummies and second place in non-food edibles for Cherry Cough Drops, is expected to release a line of cartridges in August. “Those carts are going to come in five different boxes that are collectible. Basically, each different box has a different charity organization that it’s going to project profits towards,”

Sotomayor said. “So we have one box with the tiger on it, and that’s gonna be for animal rights. We have one with a fist for quality. We have one for LGBT, and we have one for veterans as well.” Still with me? Got all that straight? Good. Because I’ve saved the best for last. ElectraLeaf and ALTVM have also forged a deal with the popular California brand Cookies. “We’re growing the Cookies strains right now. They’re going to be launching this fall,” Sotomayor said. “We are in a partnership with Cookies right now, and we’re going to be growing a bunch of their stuff,” ALTVM grower Dave Dodson said. “We have their first batch in flower. Should be a very small, limited release dropping sometime in late summer, early fall.” So in addition to growing the Cannabis Cup-winning ALTVM strains,
he is also tending to those Cookies strains in their new 9-acre, 70,000 square feet greenhouse. Between the Cookies and ALTVM strains, they currently have about 10,000 live plants. The ability to grow an unlimited number of cannabis plants is what enticed Dodson, who has been growing medically for a decade, to sell his company and move to Oklahoma from Michigan. “I like to focus on pheno-hunting and different genetics, and in order to do that, you really need to have a lot of plants,” he said. “You need to test a lot of plants, you need to grow a lot of plants from seed, and the only way to do that is to be able to have a lot of plants.” Many of those plants are grown in a building attached to the new ElectraLeaf location in Edmond as well. “Our new dispensary is there as well. It’s right at the grow,” Dodson said. “If you ever want to get the freshest stuff, come right to the source.” The Edmond location, 225 Garage Drive, is now open but is currently only providing curbside service. “I’m not here to say we’re the best. I just say we’re among them,” Sotomayor said. “The best is an opinion, and so is the Cannabis Cup, but at the end of the day, the people of Oklahoma spoke.”

FREE WILL ASTROLOGY Homework: What’s the best change you’ve experienced since the beginning of the pandemic? FreeWillAstrology.com
time to be versatile, exploratory, and committed to expressing yourself purely in whatever ways make you comfortably excited.
ARIES (March 21-April 19)
CANCER (June 21-July 22) As a Cancerian, you have a natural propensity to study and understand what author Margaret Atwood describes as “echoes and emptiness and shadow.” I believe this aspect of your repertoire will be especially active and available to you in the coming weeks. For best results, regard your attunement to these echoes and emptiness and shadow as an asset, even a precious talent. Use it to discern what’s missing or lost but could be recovered. Invoke it to help you navigate your way through murky or confusing situations. Call on it to help you see important things that are invisible to others.
“If the time is not ripe, we have to ripen the time,” wrote Aries educator and activist Dorothy Height. This approach worked well during her 98 years on the planet. Her pioneering advocacy for African American women generated a number of practical improvements in their employment opportunities and civil rights. In accordance with the current astrological omens, Aries, I highly recommend her guiding principle for your use. You now have the power to ripen the time, even if no one else believes the time is ripe.
TAURUS (April 20-May 20)
“Whatever inspiration is, it’s born from a continuous ‘I don’t know.’” A wise and talented woman said that: Nobel Prize-winning poet Wisława Szymborska. According to my analysis of the astrological omens, it’s excellent advice for you to embrace during the coming weeks. You’re close to finding and accessing a mother lode of inspiration, and one of the best ways to ensure that happens in an optimal way is to make “I don’t know” your mantra. In other words, be cheerfully devoted to shedding your certainties. Lose your attachment to the beliefs and theories you tend to overly rely on. Make yourself as empty and clear and spacious as you possibly can.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)
GEMINI (May 21-June 20)
Would you like to boost your mental and physical health in the coming weeks? Try this: Immerse yourself in the understanding that you’re interconnected with everything in the world. Tell yourself stories about how the atoms that compose your body have previously been part of many other things. This isn’t just a poetic metaphor; it’s scientific fact. Now study this passage by science writer Ella Frances Sanders: “The carbon inside you could have existed in any number of creatures or natural disasters before finding you. That particular atom residing somewhere above your left eyebrow? It could well have been a smooth riverbed pebble before deciding to call you home. You are rock and wave and the peeling bark of trees, you are ladybirds and the smell of a garden after the rain.”
Gemini-born author Djuna Barnes (1892–1982) was a world traveler who wrote in several different genres, ranging from lesbian fiction to essays on boxing to plays that used poetic language. She was experimental and empirical and experiential. On one occasion, she voluntarily submitted to the force-feeding endured by hunger-striking suffragists so she could write about what it was like to be tortured. Another fun fact about Djuna: Every morning, she did up her hair and put her make-up on, then climbed into bed and wrote for many hours. In the coming weeks, Gemini, I recommend you draw inspiration from every aspect of her life—except the torture part, of course. The coming weeks will be a fine
“Time can turn a scab into a beauty mark,” said actor and screenwriter Nia Vardalos. That’s a rousingly poetic speculation—and more metaphorically true than literally. But I suspect that if it ever might have a useful and meaningful application to an actual human struggle, it will be yours in the coming months. In my view, you are in fact capable of harnessing the magic necessary to transform a wound into a lovely asset. Be bold and imaginative as you carry out this seemingly improbable feat—which is actually not improbable.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)
It’s a favorable time to celebrate the fantastic privilege of being alive. Are you willing to believe that? Will you cooperate with my intention to nudge you in the direction of elation and exaltation? Are you open to the possibility that miracles and epiphanies may be at hand for you personally? To help get yourself in the proper mood, read this passage by Libran author Diane Ackerman: “The great affair, the love affair with life, is to live as variously as possible, to groom one’s curiosity like a high-spirited thoroughbred, climb aboard, and gallop over the thick, sunstruck hills every day.”
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)
‘”Deciding to remember, and what to remember, is how we decide who we are,” writes poet Robert Pinsky. That’s useful counsel for you right now, Scorpio. You’re entering a phase when you can substantially reframe your life story so that it serves you better. And one of the smartest ways to do that is to take an inventory of the memories you want to emphasize versus the memories you’d like to minimize. Another good trick is to reinterpret challenging past events so that you can focus on how they strengthened you and mobilized your determination to be true to yourself.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)
“A person must dream a long time in order to act with grandeur,” wrote Sagittarian author and activist Jean Genet. “And dreaming is nursed in darkness.” According to my analysis of your astrological omens, this is an apt description of what has been unfolding for you, Sagittarius—and will continue to play out for you in the next two weeks. If you’re aligned with cosmic rhythms, you have been nursing your dreams in darkness— exploring and cultivating and learning from the raw creative energy that is simmering and ripening in your inner depths. Keep doing this important work, even if there are not yet any productive results. Eventually, it will enable you to “act with grandeur,” as Genet said.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)
them.” In my estimation, you have recently earned the right to express a fresh batch of scintillating and useful truths. Please do us all a favor and unveil them—preferably with both candor and tact. In behalf of everyone who will benefit from your insights, I’m sending you congratulations for the work you’ve had to do on yourself so as to win them.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)
“After you make a fool of yourself a few hundred times, you learn what works,” testifies musician and singer Gwen Stefani. In my own life, I’ve had to make a fool of myself more than a few hundred times to learn what works. My number is closer to a thousand—and I’m still adding new examples on a regular basis. In the coming weeks, Aquarius, I highly recommend that you try what has served me and Gwen Stefani so well. You’re entering a phase when your foolishness will generate especially useful lessons. Being innocent and wildly open-minded will also be very useful.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)
“It is better to err on the side of daring than the side of caution,” wrote author and futurist Alvin Toffler. While I hesitate to declare that idea to be absolutely and always true, I do recommend it to you in the coming weeks. Given the fact that you have recently been expanding possibilities and cultivating breakthroughs, I’d love to see you keep on pushing forward until you climax your momentum. To boost your courage, try to think of a crazy cry of exhilaration you might exclaim as you make your leaps, like “YAHOO!” or ‘HELL YES!” or HERE I COME!”
