LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR Welcome to our village! I moved to Oklahoma 4 years ago from California, not knowing a soul. Like most people find, I was quickly accepted into the community and found myself immersed in the local neighborhoods and districts. I’ve lived off Western Avenue for two years now and have never felt more at home. As the Director, I’m proud to serve the small businesses that make up this unique area. Each one touches my heart in a way I can’t quite explain. I have a drive to see this city flourish. When you visit each of the stores in this book, and the ones that aren’t, remember the hearts of the owners behind them. I encourage you to shop local first and support these wonderful people. Get to know them as I have and you’ll find a friendly face everywhere you go. Rachael Taylor Executive Director

WELDON JACK Weldon Jack is more than a barbershop and shop of quality provisions, it’s a legacy of love for founder Jerrod Smith. Named after his grandfather, Jack Weldon Smith, the owner flipped his grandfather’s namesake and created the brand as a play on “well done Jack.” Jack was a military man who cut hair and did shaves while stationed on base. Jerrod adds, “He was the kind of man I aspire to be – a hard working lover of quality things who was honest with himself.” Raised in the Oklahoma Panhandle, Jerrod cites influence from his grandfather’s generation. “Influenced by a generation that didn’t depend on ‘likes’ to get somewhere, Jack believed a handshake could go a long way with likeminded people.” Passionate about community, collaboration, quality and motorcycles, Jerrod brings a unique shopping and service experience. Retail and gift provisions Smith thoughtfully curates are apparent in five categories: grooming, motorcycle, apparel, home goods and outdoor. Placing his customers first, Weldon Jack sources brands which offer simplicity, function and longevity in their products in an environment that has soul and speaks to many – “Where else can you get a haircut, an axe, handmade shaving cream and a motorcycle helmet?”

THE SANDWICH CLUB

Working on being THE destination sandwich stop in Oklahoma City may sound ambitious to some, that is, until you meet the owners of The Sandwich Club. Two former 15-year veterans of the tech industry from Silicon Valley are serving up the tasty side of an emphatically fun and creative lunch concept. Inspired by all things ‘80s, friends Isaac Barton and Alan Grande met while working in the high-tech arena and began dreaming up a way of life away from the cutthroat tech sector, where they could control their own destiny. After surveying the national and local market, they landed on Oklahoma City as the launch pad for their inventive sandwich creations. “We saved our money, planned a menu and finally chose Oklahoma City as our destination in early 2013,” said Grande. “It’s the right place at the right time for us and we really feel the area will embrace a California-style deli.” Alan is a born-and-raised proud Bay Area native who has always found comfort in the kitchen. Upon deciding to bring The Sandwich Club to Oklahoma City, they made sure to surround themselves with the era that inspired the restaurant. Naming the shop after the cult classic “The Breakfast Club” would provide them with the conceptual direction on menu, ambience and overall experience. They use local artisanal Big Sky breads to serve menu favorite “Cousin Eddie” (named after Chevy Chase’s brother in-law in the “Vacation” movies), with roast beef, provolone, steak sauce and horseradish. The Prince-inspired Purple Rain amps up the Americana classic PBJ by adding bacon and extra grape jelly. A Western Avenue favorite is the Snake Plisken (named after Kurt Russell’s character in “Escape From New York”), served with turkey, chicken, bacon, pepper jack and cream cheese. Toss in some jalapenos, red bell peppers, hot sauce and a little chipotle gourmaise and it’s irresistible. The Sandwich Club transforms your lunch party into a full-fledged time warp with its callback to the era’s most memorable music, artwork and culture.

COCK O’ THE WALK With a 55 year history in Oklahoma City, Cock O’ The Walk is one of, if not, the oldest bar in Oklahoma City. Bringing a strong sense of history and nostalgia to the name derived from British slang, a couple named Bob and Jean founded the bar in 1960 in it’s original location. Back then, the bar was known as Bob and Jean’s Cock O’ The Walk. Current owner Chris McGuire shares, “I guess Bob and Jean thought it was a catchy name. Today, people tend to think of it as more a tongue in cheek reference, when in reality, it’s just an old saying.” McGuire offers a little of what he knows about the watering hole’s backstory. “Having served as a 3.2 beer bar when it first opened, the bar changed hands several times over the years. At one point in the late 70’s and through the 80’s it was known to be a fairly seedy place. From there, Peter Fulmer took over in 1996 and fixed

up the place and restored it’s image.” McGuire became the seventh owner when he purchased the bar in 2003, and bit the bullet in obtaining a liquor license converting the beer bar into a full service establishment. Offering domestics as a staple, Cock O’ The Walk also offers a wide variety of craft and import beers and their giant cheeseburgers have gained quite the following as the bar’s favorite food. Known for their signature, salted rim foam cup Club Specials, the Twin Hills recipe is still around, “You wouldn’t think that would make a difference, but for some reason, Club Specials just taste better in a foam cup.” A laid back yet leisurely atmosphere with an eclectic clientele, Cock O’ The Walk takes pride in their reputation for pouring a good stiff drink at a great price and serving folks from all walks.

VZDS Ushering in a new era of americana, Western favorite VZD’s reopened with a solid focus on food, booze and upholding tradition. A favorite lunch, happy hour and dinner designation for over 40 years, the original venue was established in 1976 in the site of store #21 of the historic Veazey Drug chain. A classic menu of comfort remains with items like the club sandwich with onion rings, or the toasty grilled cheese and tomato soup. A wide concept menu designed to serve everyone from vegans to sports fans, VZD’s brings delicious options for all, including weekend brunch. Offsetting tradition with the dedication to crafting tasty cocktails, like “the Dojo” featured here, the

space also offers a number of craft beers on tap. A newly refreshed brand and interior, owners Nelson Bolen and Eric Smith invite you to a new VZD’s experience. Smith & Bolen kept the original feel of the club with its recent remodel but upped the ante with deep green leather booths and fresh paint, among many other upgrades. VZDs has played host to shows by The Flaming Lips, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Dixie Chicks, to name a few. After a recent revitalization, you can still find art and posters playing homage to its rock star past. You can still find old classics and favorites on their menu, but Smith has taken care to add new items to make this club a great neighborhood restaurant for nearby Crown Heights.

42ND STREET CANDY CO 42nd Street Candy Co has remained the oldfashioned sweet spot on Western Ave for over 36 years. Founded by Helen Sullivan in 1979 in a 650 square foot space next to VZDs, the specialty candy shop has grown to occupy 1500 square feet of retail space in the same building. Since opening, the store has had 3 owners: Sullivan 1979 to 1990, Pat Aaron from 1990 to 2000 and current owner Teresa Wall. A DATE WITH IRIS Nestled on the corner of 41st and Western is the progressive floral styling and design studio of A Date with Iris. Those who have been wise enough to step into this spirited, well-curated studio, find themselves inspired by a wide variety of small yet beautifully diverse, irreverent luxuries among the unique offerings of event styles and cashand-carry florals. Housed on Western Avenue for 9 years, Kris Balaban found her passion in blossomy botanics while studying art in college and working part time for a number of floral shops. Having been an expert in playing shop as a child, it was only after apprenticing with a number of professional floral designers for years she discovered her time had arrived to lend her unique voice in designing a brand of her own. Beyond the daily challenges of sometimes stubborn thorns, scratched hands, toxic leaves, and the demands of standing for hours, A Date with Iris was born. Serving all events and occasions with inspired style comes naturally to the discerning team of three: Kris, Stephanie and Emily. While Kris heads the shop, Stephanie, with a background in fashion, specializes in client relations and sales and Emily lends her photographic talents with composition and social media. Whether ordering a one-of-a-kind carryout for a friend’s birthday, stunning weekly office displays or an organically simple wedding crown, this trifecta of talent offers more than passion and personality – they have onpoint vision. Visitors often find themselves tarrying for much longer than anticipated and chatting about and shopping for specialty items they never knew they needed until viewed in the ever-changing shop’s atmosphere. Passionate about mother nature, themed parties, vermouth and cats, A Date with Iris serves Oklahoma what they call “compostable art” with a tailored taste not found in any other part of the city. BECK’S GARAGE Seasoned auto mechanic Jeff Beck opened the doors to Beck’s Garage 23 years ago on Britton Road. In 2004, the opportunity to relocate to Western Ave emerged, and the longtime resident of the neighborhood seized the prime property at 4217 N Western. Having been bitten by the car bug as a teenager, and the speed bug as a driver, Beck was drawn to hot rods and drag racing. To quench his avid thirst for knowledge of all things automobile, he pursued the path of a professional mechanic the first chance he got at age 21.

The mission of Beck’s is to provide dependable and superior vehicle repair service in a clean, comfortable and friendly environment. The garage offers general service and repair to all vehicles, foreign and domestic, and the shop takes pride in being the go-to for vintage and custom jobs; a skill that most shops have lost. Jeff’s wife Theresa, a former realtor, works alongside her husband directing marketing efforts. She appreciates getting to see firsthand how the services they provide help their neighbors and keep their families safe on the road. “Often while we are out and about, people will stop and talk with us about their cars, and how they love the shop,” she said. “It’s a great feeling knowing we have a positive impact on people.” She also celebrates community and living local. “Everyone is family. From our employees to our customers to the other businesses on Western Avenue – we all want success for each other.”

SUSHI NEKO A friendship with the founder of Sushi Zanmai in Boulder, Colorado sparked the idea for a traditional and new world sushi house concept serving specialty Japanese cuisine. Inspired upon his return to Oklahoma City, Carl Milam followed the spark and on September 22, 1997, the neon Neko lit up Western. The authentic ambience of Neko provides a brief holiday away from the day and the Neko staff does their best to create a relaxing atmosphere which makes customers feel like family. To up the adventure on your future Neko visit, try the house favorites: Red Canyon – a calamari roll on bottom and baked crawfish with spicy sauce and sweet eel sauce on top – and Yellowtail Special, with a slice of yellowtail, slice of lemon, cilantro, jalapeno. WILL ROGERS THEATRE + THE TASTING ROOM The Will Rogers Theatre was constructed in 1946 as a suburban theatre on Historic Route 66. Will Rogers Theatre featured theater-style seating on an incline, a concession area, original oak detailing, seating for 1,000 patrons and incredibly detailed murals that spell out the life and times of its namesake, the great Oklahoma cowboy, pilot and movie star Will Rogers. The 18-foot mural featured in the lobby was painted by legendary artist Craig Sheppard and is filled with the history of Oklahoma and Will Rogers’ life and death.

It continued as a theater until 1990, when it was converted into an event space. The space was extensively renovated in 2010 and the Tasting Room was added for smaller events. Will Rogers Theatre provides a unique and classic environment for any occasion. With a beautiful interior and unique ambience, Will Rogers Theatre Events Center serves as a full-time location for weddings, banquets and receptions. For up to as many as 400 guests, an extensive banquet menu is available with a la carte items from each of the Western Concepts nearby restaurants. The Tasting Room serves as a fun and educational platform for the growing food culture in Oklahoma City. TAKEOUT TREASURES With a passion for stylish accessories and retail, Maija Vogel attended college for a degree in Jewelry Design with hopes of someday owning her own boutique. Maija believes, “Takeout Treasures

SAVORY SPICE

Wandering into Savory Spice will change the mood of your food for the better. Passionate owner Able Blakely brought Savory to Oklahoma CIty after being a frequent patron of the Denver flagship store. After years of enjoying the palatable offerings of the unique spice shop, he returned to Oklahoma City in 2011 and knew he needed to pull the trigger on bringing a Savory location to Western Avenue. He knew the location was a fit because “it was immediately the exact spot I wanted my shop to be in.” Reminiscent of an area of Denver known as “Old South Pearl” with a sushi restaurant, a coffee shop, retail stores and restaurants, he loved Western’s diversity of businesses. Raised on a ranch and farm in northern Oklahoma, simple ingredients and bold flavors were the foundation for family meals with the Blakely family. Their garden was no feeble attempt at a hobby – it was the food they ate. Farm-to-table was their way of life. Blakely’s great grandfather owned a restaurant in Alva and a curiosity for finding his way around the kitchen seemed to be in his genes. A huge fan of modernist cuisine, he is passionate about cooking, flavor, and new ways of doing things in the kitchen. The intentional mission of Savory Spice is to offer high-quality herbs, spices and seasonings at a fair price in customerfriendly quantities. The local shop strives to remain innovative and provide a fun, inspiring and educational environment for all customers and staff. “I love that whenever anyone is in the shop they are instantly in a good mood, Blakely said. “People genuinely love coming in here because it smells awesome and when they leave their food tastes better.” The Oklahoma City store is well-versed in all things flavor. Whether guests are looking for a Himalayan sea salt, grilling spices for the next tailgate, specialty peppers, or chili or curry blends – Savory is the place.

FREEMAN’S Freeman’s was opened in 1959 by John, Jean and Bill Freeman, who sold their business to the store’s current owner, Chris Hancock, in 1998. They kept the name Freeman’s as a way to honor the store’s long history. Freeman’s is all about the connoisseur culture surrounding beer, wine and spirits. A large portion of the staff homebrew in their spare time and have obtained, or are working to obtain, entry level Cicerone homebrew certifications. They’re passionate about wine and spirits, too, and with limited space, there isn’t much in the store the staff haven’t tried. Carrying a wide selection of lesser-known cordials, Freeman’s staff does their best to tag them with tasting notes so customers aren’t required to make a blind decision just to try something new. The knowledgeable crew also adores wine and are just as comfortable making a suggestion for a $15 bottle for dinner with friends or a high-end choice for a personal cellar. They find pleasure in educating guests – from help sorting French wine regions or those taking the first tentative steps into red wine. They can make recommendations from a fantastic vintage grower’s champagne or wines from esteemed winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown. The great thing about building

a store around people who are passionate about what they drink is that everyone at Freeman’s loves getting up everyday and talking about the nuances of Scotch whisky, the subtleties of mash bills in Bourbon, minerality differences between Oregon and California Pinot Noir, and the best Scotch Ales you can get in Oklahoma. Freeman’s is all about honoring community. Whether it’s the local businesses on Western, schools, neighborhood associations or a variety of other non-profits, they appreciate the ongoing support from our community and take pride in being able to give back to it.

LEGACY CLEANERS When dinner time discussions leaned into entrepreneurial-inspired talks, Monte Turrentine found himself hanging on his mother’s every word as she was convincing her husband, Joe Turrentine, to consider an alternate livelihood to the path of corporate success. She must have been a persuasive speaker, as Monte’s father soon invested in Ardmore Cleaners in the early ’90s, bringing his son along to learn the ins and out of the dry cleaning machine. In 1997, Legacy Cleaners & Laundry was formed, and one year later Turrentine took charge of operations while his father later retired from his corporate post in 1999. For the past 16 years, he has built a legacy of service and a passion for people. Legacy Cleaners & Laundry promises to give their customers the professional garment care they deserve and expect while providing excellent customer service. Having grown to eight stores, including five in the Oklahoma City metro area, one in Chandler and one in Cushing with over 60 employees, Turrentine finds great satisfaction in making clients look good while taking care of his company family. “Entrepreneurship is all about passion,” he said. “If you have the passion and the desire to be an entrepreneur, the sky’s the limit. TUCKERS

At Tuckers, the Oklahoma onion burger has achieved cult status. One of the foods indigenous to the state, the humble onion burger began as an economic necessity during the Great Depression in El Reno, where chefs needed a flavorful filler to help meat go farther. Keith Paul wanted to pay tribute to the Oklahoma onion burger with quality ingredients, a classic burger joint atmosphere and genuine hospitality. Paul’s upbringing in Texas brought a few inspired mainstays to the Tucker’s concept: The One salad was a staple at his dinner table. The ordering process was inspired by a place he frequented as a teenager and it always impressed him how the simple system limited errors. Tucker’s evolved from simplicity in a burger concept to where local heritage meets the modern family. “We want our guests to feel well taken care of. The core mission of the Good Egg company is extreme hospitality.” said owners Keith and Heather Paul. “And always indulge in the shakes!”

REPUBLIC In a time when gastropub concepts were popping up all over the country, local food people Heather and Keith Paul saw an opportunity to bridge a gap between the beer bar and upscale eateries. With an imaginative menu that nods to the classic English pub like the Scotch egg, the overall style and feel of Republic was formatted to bring Oklahomans a unique version of what originally began abroad. With over 100 unique beers drawn from custom taps to 150 mindfully selected bottles, the neighborhood gathering spot brings high energy to a contemporary pub atmosphere. Chef-inspired twists like the truffled potato skins bring a party to the palate and the best gourmet burger in town is game on. Whether it’s a lazy Sunday afternoon, a night on the town or just a weekday breakaway for lunch, Republic is where foodies and connoisseurs unite. REPUBLIC // 5830 N. THE HOWELL GALLERY The Howell Gallery name represents a standard of excellence operating as a multi-medium arts gallery in Oklahoma City for more than 24 years. In the late ‘70s and ‘80s, Ken and Linda Howell co-hosted an annual art show to benefit the Mental Health Association of Oklahoma in cooperation with The Wally Findlay Gallery of Chicago. It was this early exposure to the opportunities that existed for artists to successfully show, be seen and collected, that planted the seed for The Howell Gallery. Officially established in 1991 by the dynamic Linda, an interior designer, and Ken, an architect, the couple was frequently introduced to contemporary works by artists they felt compelled to share and circulate. Currently representing 60 talented artists, the gallery houses a wide-variety of mediums including: acrylic, oil, watercolor, bronze, glass, steel, stone, ceramic and jewelry for purchase. From traditional to contemporary, impressionist to realistic, the Howells strive to continually showcase a well-balanced mix of art for their collecting clientele. The Howell team is a well-curated family affair, with daughters Leigh providing landscape design services and Laura serving as gallery director. A solid appreciation for the artist’s dedication to process, Laura shares the family’s wellinvested belief of lifestyle enrichment via the arts.

“Whether you have never purchased a piece of original art or you are a seasoned collector, we enjoy working with each person that enters our gallery,” she said. “We strive to educate people on the importance of art and the

way it can enhance not only their homes but their lives. Purchasing art should be an enjoyable experience in a relaxed and comfortable environment and we have a passion to provide that to our clients.”

ALL ABOUT CHA A concept stemming from the idea that cafes should be an oasis of serenity away from the rush of daily life, All About Cha was born in Korea. The first All About Cha location in the U.S. opened in Edmond, and the Western Ave location owned by Daniel Chae serves as

the second, even as others continue to sprout up around the state. The cooking team for Western’s serene spot is made up of Sung and Kevin Chae. Kevin leads with over 25 years as a sushi chef in California and is the designer of the sushi menu for the entire All About Cha cafe community. Speaking of community, Chae’s commitment to the community drives his work and compels him as a means to support others who need it most. It’s the Oklahoma way, he said. The cafe itself has inspired Daniel and his team to create food and drinks that are “sincere while being healthy.” The friendly smiles of staff and charming artwork on the plating of European-style desserts and cappuccinos are only a few of the signature trademarks of the Western Avenue location. The vibe is fitting for a solo experience or large groups. A few must-try items on the menu include the decadent ice cream waffle, scallop rolls and the guiltfree All About Salad. Chae loves the growing synergy on Western. “With events like WestFest and On The Lawn, it’s becoming a place for young professionals and families as well,” he said.

RCB BANK RCB Bank, That’s my bank! RCB Bank was founded in 1936. RCB Bank was established in Claremore, Oklahoma, and first opened its doors for business on Saturday, January 4, 1936, at 9:00 a.m. It was known then as Rogers County Bank and consisted of one branch. The bank began as an entrepreneurship with L.S. Robson and George Davis during the days of the Great Depression. From day one in the lean times of the Great Depression, the Bank worked to become a strong and reliable financial institution within the community and those efforts quickly resulted in growth of the company. Our motto, “That’s my bank!” was officially adopted as the Bank’s slogan in the 1970’s, along with the defining characteristics of our company: RCB stands for Relationships, Community and Boldness!

Founder’s mission for creating RCB Bank is to meet the financial needs of our communities, its businesses and its customers, “and furnish the public with banking facilities, friendly in service, progressive in spirit.” – Statement from founders’ bank opening invitation. RCB Bank takes pride in offering the latest in banking technology while keeping a small town, community bank feel. We’re big enough to offer some truly advanced products and services, like mobile deposit, text banking and mobile pay; but we are still small enough to build relationships and provide a genuine customer service experience based on respect and trust.

In 1990, Rogers County Bank’s name was changed to RCB Bank due to its expansion outside of Rogers County and into surrounding counties. Over the years, RCB Bank expanded its footprints, adding more than 40 locations across Oklahoma and into Kansas. RCB Bank entered the Oklahoma City market in 2006, and today offers 9 fullservice locations in the Oklahoma City metro, including Nichols Hills, Oklahoma City, Edmond, Norman and Yukon. Today, RCB Bank is the 5th largest Oklahoma-owned bank by assets. RCB Bank is a Member FDIC and Equal Housing Lender. What sets RCB Bank apart from the crowd is the way we do business. Taking care of people and their financial needs is our business. They come first. Everything we do - the products we offer, the convenience we provide and the genuine personable service we deliver is designed to meet the needs of our customers. RCB BANK // 7400 N. LEARNING TREE What began as the dream of two Montessori teachers 30 years ago, Learning Tree has flourished into a resourceful child-centered toy store filled with imaginative play options for children up to age 14. Patti Tepper-Rasmussen and Kathryn Carey created Learning Tree in September of 1985 at the original location of 73rd and Western, where they provided items from 25 different toy companies. The smallbut-playful venture has expanded into to a wellestablished operation carrying high-quality, safe, durable, and fun manipulative learning activities from over 450 different companies. With a passion for learning and reusability, Patti, the store’s owner, loves finding developmentally appropriate products that

are beautiful and creatively imagined by small toy makers. A grandmother herself, Tepper-Rasmussen said her favorite toys are ones that can be passed down from child to child, and from generation to generation. “I love wooden toys and activities that grow with the child; used one way as a toddler and in a more complex way as a preschooler. We try to provide a large amount of openended toys that offer a child room to grow and experiment.” Oklahoma City loves the variety of small-batch and non-TV advertised items Learning Tree provides with the expertise of a staff that knows their toys. By offering items from only the finest manufacturers, they curate, demonstrate and test products which are proven to be safe and durable. The store also welcomes children as guests and the store’s layout is designed in developmental sections to make finding age-appropriate products intuitive for the shopper. “I love that children feel free to come in and be themselves – inquisitive!” she said. At Learning Tree, the location on Western is an integral part of the store’s success. “Being in a part of the city known for it’s locally celebrated merchants and restaurants, we all work together for the greater good of our street and our customers,” she said. “Western Avenue is family.”

TASTE OF WESTERN Taste of Western is Western Avenue’s longest standing event. It has been held at Will Rogers Theatre nearly every year since its beginning in 2001. This event is the association’s largest fundraiser. It brings 20 of our Western Avenue restaurants together in one place to give patrons a sample of their finest creations. The event also features wine tastings from multiple distributors. Last year Taste of Western blended art with its culinary theme, with the addition of five murals, added to the corridor in the weeks before the event. This gathered national attention, allowing the district to do it again the following year with more murals. Taste of Western is proudly sponsored by the Google Cultural Institute, Bob Moore Maserati, the Oklahoma City Ballet, and First National Bank. Visit tasteofwestern.com for more details.

favorite mural and at the event it was announced that the winning mural was “Oklahoma Aiukli by artists Erin Cooper, Amanda Bradway and Lauren Miller. The district is adding 3 more murals to the corridor in the fall of 2015 with more talented artists. To learn more visit tasteofwestern.com

OKLAHOMA AIUKLI 704 N WESTERN Lead project artist: Erin Cooper Collaborating artists: Amanda Bradway & Lauren Miller Aiukli, Choctaw, noun, Translation: Beauty. When we were offered the this chance and given carte blanch to create a mural, our first thought was just to create something positive and uplifting that would be symbolic of all that is beautiful in Oklahoma. Finding a vision with all those qualities was not an easy task, but the answer came in the form of a 13-year old Choctaw girl named Bella Aiukli. As an active member of her tribe, she embodies many of the qualities that we wanted to convey in our piece. She’s connected to her roots in Oklahoma, but also a positive rolemodel to her peers and esteemed by everyone who knows her. We decided that she would represent Oklahoma as an entity. Her Choctaw heritage firmly rooted in the land, and her hopeful future as a native of this state.

In addition to Bella as the central element, we decided to pull subjects from nature. In our mural you’ll find the Buffalo, butterfly wings, catfish, Scissor-tail feathers, bees, roses, and other natural elements. These elements are woven into Bella’s hair and headpiece. We were careful to not appropriate any Native symbols that could be perceived as disrespectful, and created a modern and stylized look that is a departure from typical art with Oklahoma themed subject matter. We chose a bright palette of sky blue, orange and gold to represent the spectacular Oklahoma skies, with smaller elements colored in shades of blue, orange, coral red, teal green, and indigo. Our goal was to create a way for our mural to interact with the audience and allow them to connect with the art in their own ways. “Oklahoma Aiukli” has hands outstretched as though she is carrying something precious. The audience will be able to “stand” in her outstretched hands and insert themselves into the modern Oklahoma mural bathed in white light.

HAVING THE TIME OF THEIR LIVES Palmer Studios, Inc. Artist: Dr. Bob Palmer and Ms. Lisa Quishenberry

FORTUNE FAVORS THE BRAVE

This mural is from a photo I took of children playing in a farm pond swimming having the time of their lives. For me it brings back childhood memories of care free days and innocent fun. Since that mural is on an antique shop, what better way to recall the past then through remembering simple pleasures of the days gone by.

4416 N WESTERN Artist: Julie “Juuri” Robertson Alluding to the resilience of Oklahomans to withstand overwhelming natural and man-made disasters. No matter the hardships, we always bounce back and treat everyone with kindness, free of embitterment. The muse for her piece is a local 14year old girl who is beautiful inside and out. She is crowned with florals and scissortailed flycatchers rendered in kimono style to represent Julie’s Japanese heritage

CONTACT LIGHT 5600 N WESTERN Lead artist: Jerrod Smith Collaborating artists: Aaron Cahill & Phillip Danner This ethereal work was inspired by the allusion to the vastness of the universe. It asks the viewer to interpret the subject as floating, levitating, falling, rising? The model is local artist and fellow mural artist Lauren Miller. We’re all coming and going at different speeds, with differing perspective, on differing paths and this work showcases that. This is a dimensional piece where the floating figure appears to be coming off the wall through a geometric space and is the only mural created entirely from spray paint.

RED TAIL HAWK 4200 N WESTERN Artist: Jason Pawley Inspired to show an Oklahoma icon as a spirit guide with a message of change. Jason utilized motion and orientation to project the wisdom of seeing situations from a higher perspective.
