Dear Alumni and Friends, My words are inadequate to describe how grateful I am for your encouragement over the past few months. Your prayers, notes, emails, phone calls, handshakes and hugs have blessed our family as I have transitioned into the presidency. I am excited and humbled about what God is doing at OC, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds. Our alumni ranks are growing and growing – we’ve had the seven largest enrollments in school history the past seven years, including an all-time record of 2,271 students this year. We are glad these students are calling OC home. We are glad you call OC home. We hope you take every opportunity to visit campus. If you haven’t been back in awhile, you may be surprised by how much the campus has grown. Your support has helped us build new facilities to serve our students and community. And we are blessed to have people like Doug Bryant, Cary Falling, Jerrod Dean, Macie Jackson and others on our maintenance, custodial and grounds staffs who are dedicated to making OC a beautiful, functional place that feels like home.
If you run into them when you’re back for Homecoming on November 2-3, tell them “thank you.” And say thanks to Bob Lashley and the alumni relations team. They’re putting together another great weekend for you after last year’s musical, alumni banquet and other events drew rave reviews. I look forward to thanking you in person for all you’ve done for your alma mater. And I hope you’ll do more. I hope you pray for us. I hope you encourage us. I hope you come home often, and bring your young people here to experience what’s happening at OC. We want you to expect great things from Oklahoma Christian University. We want you to hold us to the highest standards as we provide a first-rate Christian education in a place that makes people feel like family. In His Service,
John deSteiguer President

The
BIG DAY Pomp, gifts, speeches and regalia. That’s what makes up inaugurations for new university presidents. At Oklahoma Christian, prayer, scripture and blessing were added to the big day. Along with Poptarts and ping-pong. John deSteiguer is not an OC alumnus. He did not play on the baseball team, perform in Spring Sing, lead business clubs and intramural teams. He didn’t go to Hardeman Auditorium every day for Chapel as a student. But that’s okay because he is OC’s biggest fan, and he’s reminded all of us that OC is home. John has worked at OC for almost 10 years (and quite possibly has attended more Chapels than some of us did as students). In 2002, he was lured away from Northeastern State University to lead our development team. When it came time to search for a new president upon President Mike O’Neal’s retirement, a thorough search led us home. John was offered the job in February 2012, took office on May 1, and was inaugurated in a beautiful ceremony on the first day of the fall semester, August 27. His bold plans for OC have breathed new energy into the campus community. He wants 3,000 students on campus in five years. He’s calling for more programs, more donors and continued innovation. It is roll-up-your-sleeves kind of work that is grounded in prayer and petition … and lots of conversations (and maybe a few ping-pong matches) with us as alumni, because we are the parents, church leaders, grandparents, community activists, business leaders and fellow dreamers. John also shares his vision in the community – coffee appointments, early-morning TV interviews, newspaper and magazine articles, social media posts, and Chamber of Commerce and Rotary meetings. It is work that is worthy. OC is home. OC is growing. OC is mission. Inauguration week helped set the tone of the deSteiguer presidency at OC. Fanfare (a whole lot of fanfare!) without pretense. John dressed up in his regalia for the installation ceremony, and he wore a suit and tie for some of his appearances.
But he also let his hair down (figuratively speaking) with shorts and sneakers for ping-pong and kickball games with OC’s students. During a brunch prior to the inaugural ceremony, the university welcomed state dignitaries, community giants and university officials from around the country. The food spread was impressive, replete with ice sculptures, jumbo shrimp, and chefs standing by for madeto-order omelettes. Yet, John’s placesetting featured his favorite power food – Poptarts and peanut butter. That nutritional tidbit is telling about our new president. He ate something you’d grab out of your own pantry … or off the shelf in your dorm room. Something you’d eat at home. By Dawn Shelton (90)

FIRST MOM Mary Jo saw son’s leadership abilities early on
When “John R” and his little sisters, their spouses, and the nine grandchildren get together at Mom deSteiguer’s Edmond home, you can count on a few laughs, a few pranks and a lot of fun. “They are still my little kids,” said Mary Jo deSteiguer about her children, including “John R,” better known as OC president John deSteiguer. A retired junior high school teacher, Mary Jo has a high mirth tolerance. “You have to be a little dingy to teach that age. We had a lot of fun,” she said. Although her son jokes that Mom deSteiguer admonished him against “getting the big head,” when he came to Oklahoma Christian in 2003, she feels deeply the responsibility her son now has as president. Before John took the job, Mary Jo said he asked her whether she could take criticism. She said yes, as long as it wasn’t criticism against her family.
12 VI SI O NFALL2012
“I am still a Mother Hen protecting her chicks,” she laughs. “I ask everyone to pray for his protection.” But she doesn’t worry. She trusts. Mary Jo and John Sr., knew early on that their son would lead. One of the first glimpses of that came when John was six years old. It was during the Vietnam War, and Commander deSteiguer was being deployed for a nine-month tour. The father looked to his young son, the oldest of three (and the only boy), and told him he would be the man of the house while he was gone. When John Sr. returned safely home, Mary Jo recalls that little John asked to spend the night with a neighbor buddy. Mom said yes, but asked why he had never asked before. The little boy told her his dad was home, releasing him from the man-of-thehouse duties. Mary Jo said her husband would not have placed that burden on their little boy if he had known how seriously John would take it. They continued to watch their son grow, and became increasingly aware of the leadership abilities God gave him. On the day of “John R’s” inauguration, Mary Jo greeted new friends, longtime friends, family and well-wishers from near and far. The line to greet her was nearly as long as the line to congratulate the new president. Amid the joy, there was a poignant tear remembering John’s father, who passed away in 2005, prompting Mary Jo’s move from Tahlequah to her new home in Edmond. Still, she knew he was watching and pleased. Mary Jo said she doesn’t like to use “proud” when talking about her kids, as the word is defined as “having or showing a high or excessively high opinion of oneself or one’s importance.” Placing humility over pride is a family trait. As the campus dubs her “deMom,” we would all do well to remember to laugh, pray and not get the big head. By Dawn Shelton (90)

FIRST LADY BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS AMONG DARLA’S TOP PRIORITIES Darla deSteiguer is balancing many roles this fall. Wife, mother and estate planning lawyer are just a few of the many titles she will juggle in addition to her role as first lady. Admittedly a bit shy of the spotlight, Darla was very visible at husband John deSteiguer’s side during the inauguration week activities. “The inauguration was a wonderful experience,” she said. “It was really a good kickoff for the fall, and everyone has been so kind and receptive to us doing this together. We have received so many encouraging notes and expressions of prayers, which have been great.” Darla feels the family, including son Joe and daughter Abby, is doing well at getting acclimated to their new roles. “While the inauguration was just a few weeks ago, we’ve been busy since the beginning of the summer. John has done a great job of making an effort to spend time with the family,” she said. “One of the ways that John and I make sure our relationship is strong is by making time each day to talk. It may not always be as long as we’d like, but we talk every day. And we laugh. That helps, too.” Darla and John were college sweethearts at Northeastern State University. They married in 1986, the year after Darla studied in New Zealand and John studied in Jamaica as Rotary International Scholars. In 1986, they enrolled in law school at Pepperdine University, where Darla graduated magna cum laude in 1989. Darla and John then moved to Dallas to start their legal careers. She served as a clerk for a federal judge. Today, she still operates an estate planning practice from her home office. “I’ve done this for 16 years, and it’s a great way for me to serve others while being there for my children,” she said. “I pick up a few new clients each year, through word of mouth, and I take care of my existing clients as well.” Darla also is focusing on being “Mom” this year – Abby’s senior year in high school. In her role as first lady, she draws inspiration from her predecessors.
“Nancy O’Neal set an amazing example of hospitality, which I hope to maintain. I’m also looking forward to getting to know students better, too,” she said. Darla wants to help inspire fellow women of faith through her talks at OC Lectureship and other events. Darla also is excited about is the new First Ladies Collection in the Beam Library. “This collection of books for female students and staff includes books that have inspired me as a Christian woman,” she said. “We also have a wish list of books that others can donate to the collection. A number of women have done so already, in honor of a special woman of faith in their lives.” By Josh Watson

How do you follow last year’s Homecoming blockbuster of Beauty and the Beast? Perhaps with another childhood staple: Dr. Seuss! The Dr.’s characters come alive on stage with one of the most performed musicals of all … Seussical the Musical! The show will again be at 8 p.m. on Homecoming Friday and Saturday, Nov. 2-3. It promises to be a great event for all ages. Last year’s musical, with two sellouts, was not the only huge success of the weekend. Approximately 600 people attended our morning Chapel, more than 600 attended the Alumni Banquet and 250 attended the 60’s Back to the Barn Bash! It was a record year on all fronts. Now, about this year … Added to the musical will be the first Homecoming performance of the OC Chorale in the ‘post-Ken Adams’ era (led by new director Dr. Kyle Pullen), a special salute to OC’s first 50-year graduating class, words from new president John deSteiguer, the traditional basketball games, and this year’s Barn Bash for the 70’s decade! For tickets to the Alumni Banquet, email dana.holley@oc.edu or call (405) 425-5110. Tickets are $20. We expect another record-setting number for the 70’s Barn Bash. To get in on the Facebook ‘chatter’ about the Bash, go to Facebook and look for the “OCC 1970’s” group. If you haven’t been back for awhile, why not this year? Don’t miss out again. McBRIDES LEAD WITH LOVING EXAMPLE LEGACY AWARD “As a child, I didn’t realize how much we shared Dad with OC. I actually thought he shared us with OC.” – Lynette McBride Brown on growing up as Dr. Bailey McBride’s daughter As Bailey and Joyce McBride receive the Legacy award at Homecoming, we are grateful they made OC home back in 1966. With his adoring bride and young family, Bailey set out on a track that took him from his faculty post to academic dean, vice president, provost, director of the Institute for Learning, and the first director of OC’s acclaimed Honors Program. Bailey, who earned his associate’s degree from OC’s predecessor, Central Christian College before it became a fouryear school, has worked for 25 years (and counting!) with the Christian Chronicle. In 2004, Oklahoma Christian launched the McBride Center for the Humanities in Bailey’s and Joyce’s honor, bringing together academics and the community with interesting public symposia. Along with their titles and contributions, we all know something more about the McBrides – something deep within our hearts. Bailey and Joyce invest in people, including many of us. Lynette, the McBride’s middle child and a nationally-certified math and science teacher at Oakdale School, talked to us in collaboration with her siblings, Melissa and Mike. Their tender reflections give us a glimpse into their parents’ off-campus life. “Dad worked hard and worked long
24 VI SI O NSPRIN G2 012
hours, but he included us in so many OC functions that I felt it was a natural part of our lives,” Lynette said. “But Dad also made sure to focus on each one of us as individuals. I remember Saturday breakfasts at McDonald’s … he would rotate through the kids to give each of us this special time. Since I am blessed to live close by, we have made Saturday breakfast a weekly tradition to this day. “Dad also took us (or dragged us, according to my brother) to many student weddings, games, performances and activities. His philosophy was (and still is) that if you support students and show them how much you care about them, you can teach them just about anything. This is a philosophy that I try to put into practice in my own career.” All three of the McBrides’ children graduated from OC and met their spouses here. Melissa is married to OC trustee Phil Roe (82), Lynette (86) is married to Patrick Brown (86), and Mike (91) is married to Karen (Cloud 87).
Lynette’s daughter, Kailey, is an OC sophomore while one of Melissa’s daughters, Jennifer, graduated in 2007. As adults, the McBride children recognize their dad’s legacy of faith, hard work, leadership, support and encouragement … and his devotion to their mother. “Last year, when Mom became seriously ill, he and I were standing together as they loaded her into the ambulance. Dad wrapped his arms around me and said, ‘They have my life in that ambulance!’ His love and support for her has been unwavering as they have cared for each other through life’s hills and valleys,” Lynette said. With Joyce’s health much improved, she and Bailey continue on those hills and valleys … through 56 years of marriage and counting, all the while investing in students, family and friends. As Bailey might tell us … “The best is yet to be.” By Dawn Shelton (90)
NORTHS POINT PEOPLE IN RIGHT DIRECTION LEGACY AWARD Stafford and Joanne North’s legacy to their family and to Oklahoma Christian can be summed up in two words: Be There. The “there” is heaven, of course, and it’s where they want all of us to be. When the Norths receive the Legacy Award at Homecoming, they’ll be pleased about the emphasis on their “forever together” goal, though they’d rather not have the attention, according to daughter Susan North Monan (85). “They don’t want their own legacy. They want nothing more than the kingdom of God to grow and for Christians to be strong in their faith through service,” Susan said. The North family, including all four kids and their spouses – David (79) and Beverly (Hobson 79) North, Julie (81) and Steve Anderson, Susan and Chuck Monan and Linda (81) and Mike (80) Parker – the 10 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren (with one to come!), have fortified the “Be There” mantra with a thumbs-up sign and intentional emphasis at every family gathering. “Dad and Mom have always worked on things that were important to them. Those things have always been God, the church, our family and OC,” said David, who was born in Bartlesville before the campus moved from there to Oklahoma City. In those Bartlesville days, Stafford was a speech teacher, but his duties steadily grew to match his energy. He was OC’s longtime executive vice president and chief academic officer. He helped shape policy, academic quality, and spiritual integrity and steadfastness,
all with a particular knack for technology. We remember the innovative, nationally-recognized dial access tape system in the 60s, which evolved to overhead projectors, then PowerPoint slides and the Internet. Daughter Linda echoes her siblings’ assessment of their dad’s lifelong work of building a legacy with whole-hearted dedication. “Dad is 100 percent all-in for God. No wavering, no equivocation. You know he will always show up, always be kind, always do right. He will never cheat, never lie, never go behind your back. He’s the one who will always make the sacrifice and always give his best,” Linda said. “He has many unique talents, but we are inspired most by the way his life paints such a clear picture of the God he serves with his whole heart.” The kids agree that their mom has been a steadfast co-pilot. Joanne’s tireless work with Stepping Stones and OCWA, along with hosting students in their home and
teaching countless Bible classes, set an example for subsequent generations. The North kids remember that in the early days of the Oklahoma City campus, their Dad spent Saturday morning at the office. There was so much to do. He took on extra assignments – teaching tennis, directing plays and the Chorale, writing and directing Songs America Sings, overseeing the development and construction of the Mabee Learning Center and Enterprise Square, directing the lectureship (which he still does!), and traveling to speak and preach on behalf of Oklahoma Christian. “At 82, he still teaches classes at OC, at church and is often on the road preaching and spreading God’s word and OC’s message all over the United States and the world,” said Julie Anderson, who has worked on campus for 25 years herself, serving in the Athletic Department. There is still so much to do … so we can all Be There. By Dawn Shelton (90)

McMillon Making a difference
DISTINGUISHED ALUMNus Few Oklahoma Christian graduates have received as many honors as distinguished professor of Bible Lynn McMillon. He will be recognized as the 2012 Distinguished Alumnus at this year’s Homecoming. McMillon graduated from Oklahoma Christian in 1963, then earned a doctorate degree in religion and church history from Baylor University. He joined OC as a faculty member in 1966 and later became dean of the College
Dad is a product of OC, and they invested in him as a faculty member. Their investment really paid off. of Biblical Studies. McMillon served as dean for 13 years, stepping down in 2010. That year, he was also named the first recipient of an endowed position named in his honor. An anonymous 26 VI SI O NSPRIN G2 012
donor gave $1.5 million to create a chair in honor of McMillon’s years of service to the university. The endowment funds a full-time salary and provides release time and a working fund for research and scholarship. McMillon met his wife, Joy (Cole 63) at OC, and they celebrated their 50th anniversary this year. Their two children, Jeff (87) and Greg (90), also attended OC. Jeff, who serves as the campus minister at Memorial Road Church of Christ, says the recognition is well deserved. “Dad really is as good as people say he is,” Jeff said. “He is so loving and kind to everyone he meets, and he is very humble. I’m so glad to see OC honoring people who make a big difference. Dad is a product of OC, and they invested in him as a faculty member. Their investment really paid off.” McMillon also serves as CEO and editor of the Christian Chronicle. Under his leadership, the Chronicle has become financially stable and currently has a circulation of nearly a quarter of a million.
While McMillon was dean, the endowment for the College of Biblical Studies grew to almost $200,000. Additionally, the college added nine faculty members, a master of divinity program, and more than 11,000 Biblerelated volumes to the library. McMillon twice revised the curriculum, increased scholarship offerings, increased the number of Bible majors, developed an experienced corps of adjunct professors, oversaw the refurbishment of the Williams-Branch Center for Biblical Studies and promoted service to churches of Christ worldwide. “I am greatly honored to be selected for this award from OC, which has been a major part of our family’s life,” McMillon said. “OC reaches deeply into our hearts and we are blessed by the countless students that have passed through our classes and lives. We are also humbled by the many alumni who have preceded us in this honor.” Joy taught English and worked in public relations at Oklahoma Christian. She served as managing editor for the Christian Chronicle from 1983 to 1989, and now works as an associate editor. Jeff said his mother is integral to Lynn’s success. “Mom has been a great partner,” Jeff said. “She’s so passionate and articulate, and Dad has so much wisdom and knowledge. I didn’t realize growing up that what I was seeing was a very special partnership between two people whose energy and emotion allowed them to accomplish great tasks.” Jeff also added that Lynn has been intentionally slowing down so he can focus on what he enjoys most at OC. “His first and greatest love is being in the classroom with students,” Jeff said. “He is enjoying doing what he is best at. That is what he enjoys the most.” By Josh Watson
CAIL KNOWN FOR LAUGHTER, LOVE
DISTINGUISHED ALUMNus James Cail has been called a living legend at Oklahoma Christian. A popular and humorous professor of psychology, Cail will be honored as one of the 2012 Distinguished Alumni at this year’s Homecoming. He has received many awards for his teaching and family seminars, and was honored as a professor emeritus at Oklahoma Christian in 2004. Cail retired in 2003 after teaching for 31 years.

Cail came back to his alma mater as the director of admissions in 1963. “I had a great time encouraging so many people to attend OC,” he said. “Many of those students became lifelong friends, and then I enjoyed seeing many of their children in my classes.” There was one student in particular that Cail was glad came to OC. The role of humorist has always brought satisfaction.” James and Judy have three children, all of whom attended OC. Trey (92) and Mindy (Lemons 96) are both medical doctors and work less than a mile from campus. Their youngest daughter, Liz (McElroy 05), followed in her father’s footsteps and teaches psychology classes at Oklahoma State University-Oklahoma City while pursuing advanced degrees. Judy recently retired after almost 20 years of teaching at Oakdale School in Oklahoma City. She also is known for teaching sign language and for interpreting worship services. She said it was comforting to see her husband honored by OC. “Having spent so much time here, OC just feels like home for us,” she said. “The people we worked with and around were just like an extended family. That’s why it’s especially nice for them to honor James this way.” By Josh Watson 27

Kent Hartman’s “Missions Minute” closes a Chapel service at Oklahoma Christian every week. Kent, a 1977 Oklahoma Christian graduate, informs the student body about the role and influence of OC students in mission points around the world. It’s a continuation of a love of missions nurtured at Oklahoma Christian years ago. It began in 1974 when Kent and his brother Dale Hartman (74) went on a short-term mission trip to Sydney, Australia, with OC president James O. Baird.
That trip and love for missions inspired Dale and his wife Sheila (Dodgen 74), Kent and his wife Nancy (Price 77), Charlie (72) and Debbie (Kelly 73) Powell, and Tony (78) and Betty Keesee – seven of whom are OC alumni – to make mission work a big part of their lives. Friendships and dreams that began at OC continued to develop through time in Memphis at Harding Graduate School. The team went on to plant a church in Campbelltown, a suburb of Sydney, and to nurture the existing congregations in the area. The team members had various stints
in Australia between 1979 to 2000, combining for 42 years of mission work there. The love of missions that began at OC is still active nearly four decades later. Kent and Nancy help with the Helpers in Missions program at OC. They are also part of InterMission, a group of former missionaries doing missionary care.
It is difficult to measure these families’ continued influence on OC, its students, and the church in Australia. Each year, InterMission helps organize Global Reunion, a camp at Oklahoma Christian that helps “Third-Culture Kids” and their parents find their voice and acclimate to American culture. The team members have spoken at World Mission Workshops, and Dale, Charlie and Tony continue to advocate missions in their work at Oklahoma congregations. The families have made many trips back to Australia to visit friends, conduct lectureships, strengthen churches, and encourage the Christian population there. All 12 children of the original Australia mission team attended Oklahoma Christian (listed with parents): Kent and Nancy – Heidi (Hartman 02) Picker, Heath Hartman, and Hayli Hartman (07); Dale and Sheila – Luke Hartman (01), Heather (Hartman 03) Roberts, and Annaleise (Hartman) Mitchell; Charlie and Debbie – Travis Powell (03), Austin Powell (06), Jordan Powell (10), and Melody (Powell 11) Jones; Tony and Betty – Kayla (Keesee 07) Tindle and Kyle Keesee. Heidi’s husband Adam Picker (03), Luke’s wife Kate (Millican 01), Heather’s husband David Roberts, Annaleise’s husband Michael Mitchell (04), Travis’ wife Kiala (Snider 07), Melody’s husband Ryan Jones (09), and Kayla’s husband Tracy Tindle (09) also graduated from Oklahoma Christian. The next generation is continuing the “family business:” Adam and Heidi
The Church of Christ in Campbelltown originally held worship services in an apartment before moving to the Campbelltown Civic Centre for its first service on Easter Sunday in 1983.

were HIM workers in New Zealand; Kayla has worked with missions in Japan and China; Hayli has worked with an orphanage in Africa; Austin and Jordan are teaching English in Japan; and Travis is a chiropractor in Wollongong, Australia, and helps with the church there. Beyond the families, dozens of OC students have experienced Australia through mission trips led by the Hartmans, Powells and Keesees.
The original team members still gather in January to celebrate Australia Day, share Australian food and songs, and remember the time spent on the field. Just as it would have been difficult to predict the influence of that early OC mission trip with President Baird, it is equally difficult to measure these families’ continued influence on OC, its students, and the church in Australia. ADAMS, NORTON breaking stereotypes, DISTINGUISHED YOUNG ALUMNI
30 VI SI O NSPRIN G2 012
On a hot September day, a parent walks through the doors of a small classroom, wanting to know “what’s up” with her daughter. “Well, I haven’t had her in class lately because she’s been in Peace,” Wil Norton (11) said. Peace is the in-school suspension program at Douglass Mid-High School, something that doesn’t jive with the “Community of Achievement” theme in Wil’s seventh-grade English class. “It’s our goal always to be thinking
about how to treat each other, how to see ourselves as part of a greater community – Oklahoma City – and how we work together in our own classroom to achieve the goals that we want to accomplish,” Wil said. It’s a different chapter of the same story just down the hall in Henson Adams’ Algebra I class. Henson, another 2011 OC alumnus, sits at a graffiti-covered desk in a room with broken window panes, discussing a student’s work with a parent.
That parent is lucky her child has a teacher with a full year’s experience teaching Algebra I. “The classroom that I took over had gone through five teachers in one year, so it was pretty rough,” Henson said. In-school suspension, broken window panes and damaged desks only tell part of the story at Douglass. For these 2012 Distinguished Young Alumni, the greater focus is on inspiring success through the prestigious Teach for America program. After surviving a grueling interview process and five-week training program in Phoenix, the former Student Government Association presidents began their twoyear contracts at Douglass, a mere 15 miles from their alma mater.
I developed a passion for literature at OC that I didn’t have before and that’s something that students pick up on everyday.
“In Teach for America, we internalize that all schools, all students, no matter where they are, what school it is, can achieve huge amounts of success – and I really believe that,” Wil said. The neighborhood is tough and so are the students. They don’t have much choice. After all, 99 percent of students live in poverty and most face other personal struggles on top of that. “When you are dealing with seriously wounded children, it takes about a semester to gain their trust before you can make any progress with them academically,” Henson said. “Once you do, it’s great. They are all capable of doing it; it just takes work.”
Henson Adams
The words “Welcome to the Harlem Renaissance,” greet every person that walks through Wil’s door. It’s a nod to the life-changing nature of the literature he teaches, a niche he found at Oklahoma Christian. “I developed a passion for literature at OC that I didn’t have before, and that’s something that students pick up on everyday,” Wil said. “Dr. Scott LaMascus (84), Dr. Bailey McBride and Dr. Cami Agan (91) really instilled an excitement in me for literature – how it can change someone’s philosophy about the world and show us our purpose in the world.” Teach for America also helps Wil live out convictions nurtured in a Minor Prophets class taught by former OC professor Harold Shank (72), now the president at Ohio Valley University. “In Micah, Amos and Hosea, they talk about how we should live out our lives in righteousness and justice,” Wil said. “I felt like Teach for America really brought along this idea of justice and righteousness in trying to bring about equitable education for all kids.” Henson’s experiences have given him a deep appreciation for the life of the Apostle Paul. “I took a class about Paul, and now I understand what it means to really be persecuted for doing the right thing – and how it’s not fun and it doesn’t feel glorious,” he said. “But because I’m a Christian, I’m just going to give God the glory for that and just keep trying.”
Wil Norton
So far, his perseverance has paid off in huge gains by his students. In one of his classes, 70 percent of the students grew three or more years in math and passed the Algebra “End-of-Instruction” test. “I can’t thank OC enough for the time I got to spend in leadership roles,” Henson said. “The tenacity and perseverance that I gained from doing those things, and always being encouraged to do my best, definitely translated over.” Neither Henson nor Wil planned to teach right after graduation. Wil was headed to graduate school to study English and Henson had his heart set on law school. “I wish that more people would consider it,” Wil said. “It’s such an important issue and it seems like a shame to not consider what you can do to contribute helping underserved kids.” Wil sees himself teaching for a while before going to graduate school. Henson plans to go to law school after completing his two-year contract. In the meantime, both work to break through stereotypes to build bright futures. “I can never be a mirror in the sense that I can’t be a young black guy that’s come from their shoes and been successful,” Henson said. “What I try to be is a window for them to see opportunity and see a part of the world that they haven’t seen before.” By Jana Miller (09)

Honorary grandmother HONORARY ALUMNA She’s the honorary grandmother to our new president, so wouldn’t it be nice to make her an official Eagle, too? Oklahoma City philanthropist Josephine Freede will be named an honorary OC alumna at Homecoming. Mrs. Freede’s generous support of Oklahoma Christian is reflected in our campus landscape. At 100 feet tall, the Freede Centennial Tower is a beacon that can be seen from anywhere on campus … and even for miles around. Oklahoma Christian awarded Mrs. Freede an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree in 1995 in recognition of her lifelong commitment to improving the quality of life for Oklahoma City’s citizens, for the goodwill she has generated for OC within Oklahoma City, and for her dedication to the ideals of patriotism and responsible citizenship through her involvement with Enterprise Square, USA. A native of Plymouth, England, Mrs. Freede’s interest in patriotism and politics was ignited when she studied for her citizenship test after she and her late husband, orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Henry J. Freede, moved to Oklahoma in the 1950s. Her association with OC dates back almost 40 years, when she hosted ladies luncheons on campus for local civic leaders. It was during that time, around 1975, when she first met Lou Phillips, the executive secretary for then-President Terry Johnson.
32 VI SI O NSPRIN G2 012
Over the years, Mrs. Freede and Mrs. Phillips built a wonderful friendship as they supported the university they loved. And that brings us to the story of how President John deSteiguer adopted Mrs. Freede as his honorary grandmother. We actually shouldn’t put all the details in print, but the story does involve a possible security issue when John and Alfred Branch, OC’s president in 2001-2002, tried to visit Mrs. Freede in the hospital and came upon a sign prohibiting anyone … except family … from visiting her. That’s all we should say, except that Lou says Mrs. Freede had a good laugh about her new “grandsons.” During deSteiguer’s inauguration on August 27, Mrs. Freede led the Pledge of Allegiance. An asterisk by her name in the program denoted her as his honorary grandmother. Lou was named an honorary OC alumna herself in 2000. She and Mrs. Freede are sometimes mistaken for sisters, but even though they’re not family, Lou is happy they’ll soon be fellow classmates! COMMITTED TO JACKSON BUILDS TIES WITH FELLOW GRADS “It’s a love story about OC.” That’s how Susie (Patterson) Jackson describes her involvement with her alma mater. Susie graduated from Oklahoma Christian in 1979 with a degree in elementary education. She’s spent her post-OC years teaching kindergarten, serving children with disabilities, and reaching out to OC alumni, students and future students. She’s the natural choice to be the honorary chair for this year’s Homecoming because she loves OC and loves connecting others with the university. “I know of no one who does more to connect with young alums and estranged alums. It really is inspiring,” Executive Director of Alumni Relations Bob Lashley (74) said. Susie has been actively involved with the North Texas Alumni Association since it began in 2003. She joined OC’s Board of Trustees in 2005. She and her husband Mark (78) have hosted countless events for students. Their lead gift helped build OC’s Jackson Family Intramural Fields for students to enjoy. A recent September day is a snapshot of Susie’s passion. She joined President John deSteiguer and other OC representatives at Fort Worth Christian School in Texas, talking up the university and hearing from parents who were excited about the experience their kids were having at Oklahoma Christian. Then, she hopped in the car for the three-hour trip to OC for a Homecoming meeting and an alumni callout. She kicked off her shoes, kicked back on the floor, and called alum after alum to invite them back for Homecoming.
Susie and Mark met on the OC campus and married in 1978. Three of their children, Katherine Branch (05), John Paul and Joel, attended Oklahoma Christian, and Royce is a high school senior. John Paul was born prematurely and has cerebral palsy. He found friendship and support at Oklahoma Christian. Susie is especially thankful for people like OC men’s basketball coach Dan Hays, missionary-in-residence Kent Hartman (77), fellow trustees Mike Arnold (78) and Mark Wiley, and distinguished professor of Bible Dr. Stafford North and his wife JoAnne for their impact on John Paul’s life. “One of the things that makes me really proud to be associated with OC is that students who learn differently are welcomed and appreciated through the Bridge Program,” Susie said. As much as OC means to her now, Susie can recall a time when she wasn’t connected to the university. On a trip to Oklahoma City, she stopped by a relatively deserted campus during Fall Break, and literally found herself on the outside looking in … peering through a window into a place she once called home. She knows some alumni feel like they’ve done the same thing. “We don’t want alumni just peering in. We want to tell them, ‘We’re open. Come see us.’ It’s really important they feel cared about, whether they had a negative experience or a positive experience. We love unconditionally here,” Susie said. “OC is always a place alumni can come home to. When they’re ready to step back, they’ll receive a big welcome.” By Wes McKinzie (98)

JURNEY NAMED INTERIM VPAA Dr. Larry Jurney is filling one of OC’s most important positions on an interim basis this fall. At the request of President John deSteiguer, Jurney agreed to be the vice president for academic affairs until the new hire begins in January. “Dr. Jurney has decades of experience as an academic leader and a beloved classroom professor at OC and at Michigan Christian College, now Rochester College,” deSteiguer said. “He is the ideal choice to fill this important interim role.” While the invitation was unexpected, Jurney is excited for the new challenge. “When he asked me, I was surprised at first because I had recommended other candidates to him, both on and off campus, for the permanent position,” Jurney said. “However, I really wanted to help the president get off to a strong academic start. I believe he is truly the best person to position OC for strong, Christian growth. I know he wants what is best for the university and for our students, and I am honored to help him do that while we search for the perfect long-term candidate.” While Jurney appreciates being selected for the position, he is also thankful for improved health. Over the summer, Jurney had kidney transplant surgery, allowing him to stop difficult dialysis treatments. “I feel better than I have in years. I am grateful to God for such a wonderful kidney and for the skilled surgeons,” Jurney said. “I look forward to helping my successor. There are several outstanding folks who will apply for the position, both internal and external.” Jurney, who won OC’s Faculty Leadership Award in 1998, serves as chair of the university’s Department of Communication. He has a bachelor’s degree in communication from Lipscomb University, a master’s degree in communication from the University of Tennessee, and a doctorate in radio/television/film

SEVEN-FIGURE SUPPORT Johnsons honored with million-dollar gift Jill and Cary Brown of Midland, Texas, gave Oklahoma Christian $1 million to fund student scholarships and renovate OC’s historic Benson Hall. The renovation will include the Terry (64) and Marty (Mitchell 71) Johnson Administrative Suite. It will be named in honor of Jill’s parents, Terry and Marty Johnson, who served as Oklahoma Christian’s president and first lady from 1974 to 1996. Benson Hall, named for former Oklahoma Christian chancellor George Benson, was one of the four original academic facilities built when the college relocated to Oklahoma City from Bartlesville in 1958. “We wanted to honor my parents and we were thrilled that the university decided to move the administration to Benson Hall, where my father served during his presidency,” Jill Brown said. “The gift for scholarships came from where our heart is. We want to help students pursue their education here. We love hearing stories about students getting to come to OC, developing and growing in their relationship to Christ.” Cary Brown is president, chief executive officer and chairman of the board for Legacy Reserves, LP. The Browns are members at Golf Course Road Church of Christ in Midland, where they are actively involved in missions and other ministries. They have four children: Mitchell, Emily, Ashley and Joshua. “Terry and Marty have been such big influences in my life,” Cary Brown said. “Honoring them and partnering with them in their mission to help students grow and work out their faith … that is Terry’s and Marty’s passion, and that’s the joy we get out of this gift.” Johnson’s presidency included more than $100 million raised for construction, endowment and operations, the construction of the Bible building (now known as the Williams-Branch Center for Biblical Studies), the Garvey Center, the Thelma Gaylord Forum and Enterprise Square USA.
Terry and Marty Johnson with their daughter, Jill, and her husband, Cary Brown.
It also included the expansion of the Mabee Learning Center and the Payne Athletic Center, the establishment of the engineering program and Prince Engineering Center, the start of the Vienna Studies program and the master’s degree in ministry, and OC’s move to university status in 1990. Campus visits by iconic figures and leaders like Bob Hope and Sam Walton, George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush also highlighted Johnson’s tenure. The elder Bush was the President of the United States when he came to OC’s campus in 1992. Marty, an accomplished teacher and businesswoman, is a legendary hostess and conversationalist. She welcomed countless world, civic and church leaders into the Johnson home as the consummate first lady. “The legacy of Terry’s and Marty’s leadership continues to make a profound impact on OC today. They made people from all over the world feel at home here, and their service helped Oklahoma Christian grow by leaps and bounds,” President John deSteiguer said. “They are committed to Christian education, they love OC, and we are grateful that Cary and Jill share that love and commitment.” By Wes McKinzie (98)

$1 million gift funds athletic endowment The grandparents of OC basketball player Andee Wayne gave $1 million to the university to fund an endowment for an academic program that will assist OC student-athletes. Mo and Richard Anderson of Austin, Texas, presented the gift to fund what will be known as the Anderson Endowment for Academic Excellence in Athletics. Mo Anderson is the vice chairman of the board for Keller Williams Realty, Inc. “Andee is loving her experience at OC and receiving a great education as a pre-med major,” Richard Anderson said. “We have enjoyed our interaction with the school and faculty. It has been such a positive experience for our entire family that we wanted to show our appreciation and to add value to the students’ education.” The new endowment will provide OC student-athletes with an athletic academic advisor who will monitor in-class grades and arrange for tutoring if necessary. It also will enable the podcasting of classes for all excused absences for athletic-related travel, which will increase as OC joins the Heartland Conference and pursues NCAA Division II membership. As the program develops in the coming years, life-skills training and leadership components will be added, Athletic Director Curtis Janz (86) said.
Andee Wayne (leaning over next to Coach Stephanie Findley’s right shoulder) is the granddaughter of Mo and Richard Anderson.
The program will be led by new Director of Academic Excellence in Athletics Dean Findley. Tom Heath Field at Lawson Plaza under construction Construction is moving quickly on a new on-campus softball stadium that will be completed next year. Ricky and Kelly Lawson provided the seven-figure anchor gift for the stadium, which will be named “Tom Heath Field at Lawson Plaza.” When completed, the stadium will include locker rooms, coaches’ offices, training rooms, meeting rooms, a players’ lounge, permanent restrooms, a press box, permanent seating, an indoor training facility and a 34-vehicle parking lot. Ricky (92) and Kelly became interested in the softball team after their friend Kent Allen (79), OC’s vice president for advancement, suggested they attend a game. “After Kelly and I got involved with the team, we noticed that Tommy was working hard on the field, dragging the infield, watering by hand and so on,” Lawson said. “We decided we wanted to help the team, and this new field, which we think will be as nice as any in the country, seemed like the natural thing.” The stadium’s name is a tribute to Heath (71), who has served as OC’s softball head coach since the program began in 1995. “When Ricky and Kelly told me what they wanted to do for the softball program, I was speechless,” Heath said. “They have

OC students help FIGHT FIRE in Tanzania A group of Oklahoma Christian students became impromptu fire fighters when a catastrophe occurred during their summer mission trip to Tanzania, Africa. Ben Langford (98), director of OC’s Center for Global Missions, said he and 10 undergraduate students became part of a “bucket brigade” during their visit to the Tanzanian village of Chimala for the first three weeks of May. Chimala is the site of the oldest Church of Christ hospital in Africa, and it also is home to a primary and secondary school. Several days into their visit, the students were participating in their nightly devotional session when a Church of Christ missionary told them about a fire at the secondary school’s girls’ dormitory. Langford said the group was shocked when they ran about a half a mile to see the dormitory engulfed in flames. He said he feared the worst when they learned that the closest fire station was about an hour and a half away from the school. “Flames were shooting up 40 and 50 feet. We thought ‘This thing is going to burn to the ground,’” Langford said. OC junior Nick Poulos said a fellow student wondered where the fire fighters were. “She said she thought ‘Where are the firemen?’ and then she realized that we are the firemen,” Poulos said. Langford and Poulos said the girls who lived in the dormitory had been elsewhere so they knew no one was in danger of being injured. However, Langford said losing the dormitory and its contents to fire would be catastrophic for the school and village, so the OC students joined with about 100 Tanzanians to put out the fire. A bucket brigade was soon formed to transport water from a creek about 50 yards away, Langford said. “It took us three hours and we saved half of the building,” he said. “It was a pretty amazing experience.” Langford said the fire gave the students a different perspective. “I think this made it all real. No fire truck came. We worked alongside Tanzanians to do this,” he said. “It was not just like swooping in as heroes. The students really got to serve alongside Tanzanians.” Meanwhile, Langford said the OC group served in many other ways. He said the group conducted a sports camp at the school and visited several villages to conduct about a dozen Vacation Bible School sessions for children. The students also painted educational information on the school’s walls that tied in with the students’ curriculum and helped set up the school’s computers.

OC students bonded with the local children during their summer mission trip to Tanzania, Africa.
Poulos, who is majoring in engineering and vocational ministry, was asked to design and help build a bridge across a drainage area. He said the undertaking was rewarding. He said he worked with two translators to convey his ideas to Tanzanians who worked with him to complete the 30-foot-long bridge. “I definitely wouldn’t have been able to do it without God,” Poulos said. As for the fire, Poulos said the conditions in the village reminded him of Oklahoma’s drought – extremely dry. He and Langford said the mood was very tense and chaotic as villagers realized that the fire could potentially spread to engulf the village and surrounding vegetation. “Everybody was motivated to put it out,” Poulos said of the blaze. OC’s new president, John deSteiguer, mentioned the students’ experience with the fire in his inauguration speech. “He said it was a significant event this past summer and that these are the kinds of students we have at Oklahoma Christian,” Langford said. “We want them to ask ‘What is God doing in the world and how can I participate in that? These trips help answer these questions.” By Carla Hinton Copyright 2012, The Oklahoman

OC SETS ENROLLMENT RECORD Oklahoma Christian’s fall enrollment of 2,271 students is the highest in the school’s 63-year history. The last eight years have featured OC’s eight highest enrollments ever, including the previous record of 2,258 students in 2007. “This is Oklahoma Christian’s golden age in many ways, including enrollment. We are thrilled with the spirit on campus and the momentum we have because so many students are calling OC home,” President John deSteiguer said. “Our record enrollment and strong retention are a credit to the students seeking a first-rate Christian education, and also to our highquality faculty, dedicated staff and loyal alumni who give students the tools and support to learn, lead and grow.” In addition to the total enrollment record, OC’s graduate enrollment of 361 students also is an all-time high. Oklahoma Christian offers graduate programs in business administration, engineering, ministry and divinity. OC’s MBA program is offered both on-site and online. The 2012 undergraduate total of 1,910 students is the third highest in OC history and represents a 1.5 percent rise from last year. Graduate enrollment rose 6.2 percent while the overall enrollment total is a 2.2 percent increase over last year’s class. Thirty-seven percent of OC undergraduate students come from Oklahoma, with another 22 percent from Texas. OC’s international enrollment also is strong, with 344 students (218 undergraduate and 126 graduate) coming from outside the United States. This year, the university opened a Learning Support Center in Kigali, Rwanda, allowing Rwandan students to study in OC’s online MBA program.
OC remains ON U.S. NEWS, PRINCETON REVIEW ‘BEST’ LISTS Oklahoma Christian continues to rank among the best colleges in the western United States, according to U.S. News & World Report and The Princeton Review. OC ranks No. 43 on U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Regional Universities-West” list, marking the 14th consecutive year Oklahoma Christian has earned a place in Best Colleges Guidebook. OC PLACES EIGHTH IN NATIONAL DIRECTORS’ CUP
SPRING SPORTS FINISH STRONG
Oklahoma Christian placed eighth in the final 2011-12 NAIA Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup Standings, the third straight top10 finish for the university. The Directors’ Cup measures the overall strength of an institution’s athletic program. OC was eighth in 2009-10 and 10th in 2010-11. “We are proud of our eighth-place finish,” OC athletic director Curtis Janz (86) said. “Our three consecutive top-10 finishes are testament to the hard work, commitment and vision of our student-athletes, coaches and administration.” OC won national championships in men’s cross country and men’s tennis, and placed second in men’s golf, tied for third in women’s tennis, placed sixth in women’s golf, and finished 10th in men’s outdoor track and field. Men’s basketball, men’s indoor track and field, and women’s outdoor track and field also recorded points for the university.
The men’s tennis national championship highlighted an outstanding spring season for OC athletics. The men’s golf team, national champions in 2009 and 2011, finished second in 2012, extending its streak of top-four national tournament finishes to 13 straight years. Vilhelm Bogstrand placed third individually. He and Logan Herbst, who tied for 10th, represented OC on the all-tournament team and were named first-team All-Americans along with teammate Alasdair Dalgliesh. Preston Wilkins and Jared Consoli made the second-team All-America list. In the first year of the women’s golf program, the Eagles placed sixth at the national tournament, led by Anna Arrese Cortadellas’ second-place individual finish. Arrese Cortadellas and Sarah Harper were named NAIA All-Americans. The women’s tennis team advanced to the national semifinals for the first time in program history before falling to eventual champion Auburn-Montgomery (Ala.). It was the best national finish ever by any OC women’s athletic team. Hermon Brhane and Lucie Sipkova each received NAIA AllAmerica first-team honors while Gabriela Carrillo, Marta Contel Miranzo, Maryfer Abreu Roman and Andreea Constantinescu earned honorable mention. In track and field, Silas Kisorio capped his remarkable career with two more national championships, earning Most Outstanding Performer honors at the NAIA outdoor meet. In his career, Kisorio won 12 NAIA individual titles (the most in OC history), one team championship (last fall in cross country) and earned All-America status 21 times (also an OC record). “Silas was just amazing,” OC head coach Randy Heath (69) said. “Just amazing. What a way to close out his collegiate career. It’s real fitting that he won the award. He is very deserving. Everybody appreciates his talents.” Eagles Kisorio, Geoffrey Njonjo, David McWilliams, Brandon Jackson and Brayden Barrientez joined Lady Eagles Katie Ostlund and Makenzie Brown in earning All-America honors.
OC RANKS IN NATIONAL TOP 10 FOR ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICANS Oklahoma Christian ranked in the top 10 nationally among all higher education institutions with a school-record 11 Capital One Academic All-America selections in 2011-12. OC’s total tied for ninth overall, sixth among NAIA institutions and No. 1 among Oklahoma universities. OC was one of only 18 schools nationally that had at least 10 honorees. During the 2011-12 academic year, OC student-athletes posted a cumulative grade point average of 3.097. “This is a big accomplishment for our university, athletic department and our student-athletes,” OC athletic director Curtis Janz (86) said. “We strive to perform well in both the classroom and in our athletic programs, and this is evidence that we are succeeding in that quest.” Six of OC’s 11 honorees received first-team recognition: Katy (Clift) Fabrie (women’s basketball), Renardy Guelfi (men’s tennis), Martin Poboril (men’s tennis), Brayden Barrientez (men’s track and field/cross country), Tracy Marshall (men’s track and field/cross country) and David McWilliams (men’s track and field/cross country). Three OC student-athletes were second-team picks: Trey Boykin (men’s soccer), Lucie Sipkova (women’s tennis) and Austin Simkins (men’s track and field/cross country). Two others – Cady Block (women’s track and field/cross country) and Erin Sesemann (women’s track and field/cross country) – received third-team recognition.

OC accepted into NCAA Division II membership process The NCAA has approved Oklahoma Christian University’s application to start the three-year membership process for entry into Division II. If all goes well, OC could be a full NCAA Division II member by the 2015-16 academic year. “We are honored to be given the opportunity to step into the NCAA, and we are ready to compete well,” OC president John deSteiguer said. “We are proud of our decades in the NAIA and we are thankful for the many wonderful relationships that developed on and off the fields and courts of play with our fellow competitors. We look forward to developing positive relationships with new competitors as we strive to earn full NCAA membership.” OC will compete as a member of the Heartland Conference, a Division II league with member schools in Arkansas, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. OC athletic teams began playing full Heartland Conference schedules this fall. In 2012-13, OC is serving what is called Candidacy Year One with the NCAA, during which time the university will work on developing organizational processes to become NCAA-ready. If the NCAA approves, OC could advance to Candidacy Year Two for the 2013-14 academic year. During that year, the processes become more stringent and OC must follow all NCAA rules and regulations. Year three of the membership process – potentially in 201415 – is traditionally known as the “provisional year,” after which OC could gain full NCAA membership. The earliest OC would be eligible to compete for NCAA Division II championships would be the 2015-16 academic year. The Division II membership committee annually determines if an institution should be moved forward into the next candidacy year and it can require an institution to repeat a year if progress is not sufficient. “We are honored that the NCAA has allowed us to pursue membership,” OC athletic director Curtis Janz (86) said. “Oklahoma Christian is proud and excited to be associated with an organization like the NCAA that stands for excellence, competitive equality and diversity. We see this as a new beginning and a chance to establish new, great athletic traditions.” OC also has been accepted as a member of the National Christian College Athletic Association, which will provide postseason opportunities for the university’s student-athletes during the transition process into NCAA Division II. OC held membership in the NAIA from 1965 until the end of June and had been a member of the Sooner Athletic Conference since its creation in 1978. Changes in the composition of the NAIA, along with the growth of the university, led OC to re-evaluate its affiliations.

In 2006, OC began a community-wide discussion and study regarding national affiliation. The study, which was led by Janz after he became OC’s athletic director, was overseen by then-OC President Dr. Mike O’Neal, the President’s Advisory Council and the university’s Board of Trustees. The process consisted of a comprehensive study of the university’s athletic programs, institutional framework and long-term strategy and fit. This process included OC’s senior administrators, staff, faculty, students, alumni, boosters and community neighbors. Through this process, the university determined its strategic values and long-term vision were more closely aligned with those of NCAA Division II. OC already is functioning on an NCAA Division II level in terms of budget, staffing, sports sponsorship, scholarship support, academic standards, rules and governance, marketing, competitive success, student experience and other factors. In April 2011, the OC Board of Trustees approved the filing of an application for NCAA Division II affiliation. OC filed its most recent NCAA application this spring. “Joining the Heartland Conference and seeking NCAA membership will be a challenge we welcome, with new foes in new places,” said OC’s longtime men’s basketball coach, Dan Hays. “It will be fun to visit some of the cities in which the Heartland Conference teams reside. I think our fan base will really enjoy reconnecting with the old Oklahoma Intercollegiate Conference teams that are now Division II, because we will play some of those schools.” OC’s new league, the Heartland Conference, consists of the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith; Dallas Baptist University in Dallas; McMurry University in Abilene, Texas; Newman University in Wichita, Kan.; Oklahoma Panhandle State University in Goodwell; St. Edward’s University in Austin, Texas; St. Mary’s University in San Antonio; Texas A&M International University in Laredo, Texas; and the University of Texas-Permian Basin in Odessa, Texas. OC’s former SAC rivals, Rogers State and Lubbock Christian (Texas), also were accepted into the NCAA Division II membership process and will begin play in the Heartland Conference in the 2013-14 academic year. OC won five national team titles during its tenure in the NAIA, including two during the 2011-12 academic year – men’s cross country and men’s tennis. OC finished in the top 10 of the Learfield Sports NAIA Directors’ Cup standings each of the past three years. By Murray Evans (89) WATCH THE VIDEO ANNOUNCING OC’S NCAA CANDIDACY. WWW.OC.EDU/VISION
the first shall be last NAIA MEMBERSHIP ENDS WITH ANOTHER TENNIS TITLE In 2003, Kris Miller’s Eagles captured the men’s tennis national championship to give OC its first team title in any sport. 2012 brought an encore performance, delivering OC’s last-ever NAIA championship. (Oklahoma Christian has left the NAIA to enter the NCAA Division II membership process). The national title bumped OC’s all-time team total to five, including men’s golf in 2009 and 2011 and men’s cross country in 2011. OC also won 40 individual/relay NAIA championships in golf, cross country, and track and field. This year’s tennis championship wouldn’t have happened without two gritty comebacks. In the semifinals against No. 2 Embry-Riddle (Fla.), OC trailed 3-0 and 4-1 before rallying to tie the match at 4-4. Then, Jaime Sanchez-Canamares came from 3-1 down in the third set to win his match and clinch OC’s 5-4 win. In the finals, an exhausted Bruno Tiberti, the No. 1-ranked player in the NAIA, did the same on a hot, humid Saturday against No. 1 Fresno Pacific (Calif.) with the national championship on the line. Down 4-1 in the third set, he summoned the strength to win the final five games and take the decisive match 4-6, 7-5, 6-4, setting off a raucous celebration by the Eagles. “I’m not sure how we pulled it out,” said Miller (94), who earlier in the week was named as the Wilson-Intercollegiate Tennis Association NAIA Men’s Coach of the Year. “We just kept
saying all week, ‘Just believe, find a way.’ And we did. Our kids are incredible student-athletes. “It just happened to be our year, I think.” Tiberti’s pressure-packed comeback helped make him the NAIA’s Ward-Ballenger Outstanding Player. “It’s not that good to express my emotions right now,” said Tiberti, who after the match. “I can’t. I just can’t. We worked so hard. It just happened. I don’t know how. I was losing, I was done. I said, ‘I’ve got to push some more.’” Tiberti’s rally followed a key win by Sanchez-Canamares, who beat Cledson Carvalho 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (8-6) at the No. 3 singles position to tie the match at 4-4. It was one of three matches the Eagles won by taking a decisive tiebreaker. “Both of them were just pure guts,” Miller said of the wins by Sanchez-Canamares and Tiberti. “They had nothing left in the tank. It was all just heart. Jaime came up with some big plays at just the right time. He played big, played strong to finish. “And Bruno, classic example of winning ugly. Doesn’t matter what it looks like, doesn’t matter how you play as long as you’re playing to win. He found a tactic that was working. It was ugly to everybody but me. It was beautiful tennis.” Sanchez-Canamares, Tiberti and Martin Poboril were named to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s NAIA All-America team. Poboril and Renardy Guelfi earned first-team Academic AllAmerica honors from CoSIDA and Capital One. watch the eagles celebrate their national championship! WWW.OC.EDU/VISION

OC ALUM ENJOYS NBA FINALS OC basketball fans may know Clinton Corley as one of the school’s best play-by-play announcers in recent years ... or as the sideline reporter for OC’s game telecasts on statewide cable. Fans of the NBA’s Oklahoma City Thunder may not know him, but they know his behind-the-scenes work for Thunder Broadcasting, where he serves as a video photographer and editor. He traveled with the team during its 2012 run to the NBA Finals. When the Thunder clinched the Western Conference championship in front of a sellout home crowd at Chesapeake Energy Arena, it was “a night I will never forget the rest of my life,” Clinton said. Clinton graduated from Oklahoma Christian in 2010 after making the most of his college career. He won awards working on air and behind the scenes for OC’s weekly newscast (which is now broadcast live statewide). He announced countless OC basketball games and helped produce the school’s game telecasts. He also interned for a television station in his hometown of Topeka, Kansas. Now, he edits Thunder highlight packages after every game, documents player visits to community events and handles various responsibilities at home games. “The fun part of the job is just going out and doing a story, seeing the players up close and talking to them afterward,” Clinton said. “Being in the production truck during games to watch how what you see on TV is put together just amazes me.”
Clinton is one of six OC alumni or students who have worked with the Thunder. Luke Johns (11) interned with the team while Courtney Britt (10) and Amber (Canady 10) Rogers had marketing roles with the organization. David Jones (94) recently became the Thunder’s manager of broadcast operations and current student Jon Stafford is a broadcast intern. Clinton’s job allows him to rub elbows with NBA bigwigs and its biggest stars. He had a down-to-earth conversation with Dallas owner and famed billionaire Mark Cuban. And he gets up close to watch guys like Kobe, Lebron and the Thunder’s own Kevin Durant ... not to mention some of his broadcast heroes from ESPN, TNT and Fox Sports. Entering his fourth year with one of the NBA’s elite organizations, Clinton is excited about the future. He once had on-air aspirations, but discovered his passion for producing when he got hands-on experience running the control room for OC basketball telecasts. “The thing about producing for me is being able to put your thoughts and creativity to life. The professors and instructors at OC helped me because they let me do it. Learning from my mistakes and making it better was something they taught me,” Clinton said. “Their approach of being hands off, yet being there, allowed me to really see for myself what it’s like and what I need to do to become successful.” By Wes McKinzie (98)
FORMER OC GOLFER SHOOTS RECORD 55 Former Oklahoma Christian golfer Rhein Gibson (08) set a provisional world-record score by shooting a 55 at River Oaks Golf Club in Edmond in May. Gibson, a native of Australia, had 12 birdies and two eagles during his 16-under par round on the par-71 course.
46 VI SI O NFALL2012
His record round attracted worldwide attention from media outlets like ESPN, CBS, Fox, USA Today and the Golf Channel. Gibson was a four-time NAIA AllAmerican at Oklahoma Christian, placing as high as fourth in the nation individually. He won the Oklahoma Open in 2010.

ALUM WINS EMMY AWARD OC alumnus Lucas Ross won an Emmy Award for his work on the “2 Movie Guys’ Intergalactic Holiday Showdown.” The show, produced and directed by Ross and fellow “movie guy” Ryan Bellgardt, won in the “Arts/Entertainment - Program/Special” category at the Heartland Emmys. The Heartland Emmy Awards honor work produced for the large markets of Denver and Oklahoma City or smaller markets within the region. The Heartland chapter is one of 19 chapters of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. The “Intergalactic Holiday Showdown” aired on KFOR and KAUT in Oklahoma City on Christmas night last December. In addition to producing and directing, Ross and Bellgardt starred in the show, which featured green aliens, snazzy costumes, and the 2 Movie Guys’ trademark humor. “Our show was a holiday special that took place in outer space. Ryan and I got kidnapped by aliens who needed us to help them fight an evildoer,” Lucas said. “The goal was to be home in time for the holidays. It was pretty much your typical Christmas story.” Except for the aliens and outer space part! Lucas graduated from Oklahoma Christian with a mass communication/theatre degree in 2003. He spent his final semester as an OC student in Los Angeles, interning with Carsey-Werner Productions and working on TV programs like “That ’70s Show,” “The Tracy Morgan Show” and “Grounded for Life.” The opportunity came through OC’s membership in the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities. By Wes McKinzie (98)
Lucas Ross gives his Heartland Emmy a thumbs-up.
UNDERSERVED KIDS MAKE MUSIC THANKS TO OC ALUMNUS Scott Filleman, a 2005 OC graduate, is doing a tremendous work in his role as band director at Santa Fe South Schools in Oklahoma City. He took a band that began with no budget and just a few working instruments in 2007 and built it into a program with more than 300 student musicians from fourth through 12th grade. That would be a success story anywhere. But almost all of Santa Fe South’s students come from impoverished families that qualify for free or reduced-price lunches. They don’t have much. But they have the opportunity to make music, thanks to Scott and a caring community. “I couldn’t ask for a better administration. They’ve found a solution for everything we’ve wanted and needed. Although this school may be poor financially, it’s rich in the way it invests in students and shows compassion,” Scott said. “The kids love what they do and that keeps me going. It feels good to hear them say things like, ‘Your class is why I came to school today.’”
Scott Filleman
Some of those students don’t have instruments to play right now. The band’s biggest needs are lower woodwinds (instruments like bassoons and tenor/baritone saxophones) and lower brass instruments (trombones, baritones, tubas). They also need financial assistance for repairs because many of the donated instruments need to be fixed before they can be used. If you’d like to help, contact Scott at sfilleman@santafesouth. org or call the school at (405) 631-6100.

NAME: TIPTON BURCH (82) Hometown: Wewoka, Oklahoma Current Job: Head of Credit Approval - Oklahoma Market for JP Morgan Chase Bank, N.A. Childhood Ambition: To be either a banker or a trash man. It looked like a lot of fun to ride all over town on the back of a truck! My grandfather and father were both bankers and a career in banking was my ultimate choice. Wildest Dream: To be an astronaut, travel to the moon and fly the space shuttle. Proudest Moment: I actually have four proudest moments, which consist of being able to baptize each of my four boys. My triplet boys were all baptized on the same Sunday. There is nothing that makes me more proud than seeing my boys grow and develop in their walk with God. Biggest Challenge: Becoming manager of a department that I had never worked in at the bank. The president of the bank saw something in me that I did not see in myself at the time. It turned out to be one of the best growing and learning experiences in my career. My Life: I am a third generation banker and I have been very blessed throughout life. God blessed me with two wonderful parents, a Christian wife and four healthy boys that are all heading the right direction in their walk with God. I have been happily married for 28 years to Robin (Hawkins 84) Burch. I have been with JP Morgan Chase Bank for 25 years. God has always had a better plan for my life than I have had on my own. My School: I obtained my degree in Business Administration at OC and an MBA in finance from the University of Central Oklahoma. My years at OC were not only four of the best years of my life; it was truly a life-changing event for me. I came to OC as a third-generation Christian, but severely lacking in Christian maturity. OC provided an environment where it was much easier to make good decisions, and my spiritual maturity grew immensely during my time at OC. I am not sure I would be a member of the church today were it not for attending OC. My time at OC helped me recognize the wisdom of my parents and the priceless value of obtaining a Christian education.
NAME: NEAL HUNTER Hometown: Lancaster/Dallas, Texas Current Job: Owner, HunterGraphics Childhood Ambition: In seventh grade, Mike and I decided we were going to do standup. FONDEST MEMORY: Marrying my best friend and loving wife, Melanie, 22 years ago. Wildest DreamS: Seeing my daughters with faithful families of their own and having Melanie grow old with me. Priceless! Alarm Clock: A timekeeping device corrupted by noise. Favorite OC Bible Class: I have two favorites ... “Acts” with Avon Malone and “Hermeneutics” with Raymond Kelcy. Proudest Moment: Baptizing my daughters, Elisabeth and Meredith, and walking Elisabeth down the aisle in her wedding September 1. Being a part of their Christian walk as they have grown into beautiful young ladies has been an incredible blessing for Melanie and me. Biggest Challenge: Myself. Indulgence: Watching football … Dallas Christian Chargers, Texas A&M and Dallas Cowboys Inspiration: Hugo McCord, who retired just before I came to OC. I learned from him during his lectureship classes and his Open Forum with Raymond Kelcy. He was a brilliant, calm, gentle, loving man who shared the Word by speaking in truth and love (Ephesians 4:15). My Life: Has been wonderfully blessed with the people God has put in my path. My School: OC gave me not only a great education, but relationships that will last an eternity. That’s why I want to share OC with every high school student who will listen. OC will always be home.

WHERE IN THE WORLD IS OC? Anna Beth Duncan (a freshman at OC this fall), Emma Duncan and OC trustee David Duncan (89), taken June 2012 in Vitoria, Brazil.
Here’s a three-point plan for the next time you take that vacation or mission trip to some famous or exotic location: 1 Take some OC gear. 2 Take your picture with you wearing it. 3 Tell us where you are and what you’re doing. If you email or mail the photo to us, we’ll post it on our alumni website … and it might even appear in the next Vision. We look forward to seeing those pictures! Jana Miller (09) spent part of her summer doing mission work with Meagan Hawley (06) in Zambia, Africa.
Outgoing president Mike O’Neal receives an OC pennant from Col. Doug Wheelock at the Spring Commencement ceremony. Col. Wheelock had taken the pennant into space with him when he was commander of the International Space Station.
