Spring is just around the corner and the cannabis community here in Oklahoma is booming. We have some new legislation that's in the works to expand medical marijuana licenses to nonresidents. With that said a lot of people are now asking the question: Is adult-use legislation coming to Oklahoma soon?

CBD and Skincare The Benefits of Plants and CBD for Skin Care and Health By Veronica Castillo

The year of the vegan, as declared by the Economist, (an international publication that focuses on current affairs, international business, politics, and technology) was 2019. That year, statistics showed that there were 10 million vegans in the United States alone, and that cannabis would be worth $46 billion, according to Marijuana Business Factbook (an exclusive market, financial, and operational data resource for the cannabis industry).

CHRONIC | APRIL 2021

C

annabis is proving to be nature's miracle plant. Many have known this, but since the legalization of hemp/CBD, the world is seeing the potential of the plant for all things human body and mental health. It’s not only cannabis though, we are seeing that plants are truly nature’s medicine.

And let’s just address the fact that we are seeing plants decriminalized and studied for medicinal value, psilocybin is making its legalization impact right behind Cannabis, and that the meat industry was projected to lose $20 billion in 2020, according to Vegconomist (global news from the world of vegan business), due to the plant-based movement. It appears that plants are shifting the way humans eat, drink, live, consume and apply medicine, and treat a multitude of conditions. In fact, the CBD skincare market is expected to reach $1.7 billion by 2025, according to

PR Newswire.

The Benefits of Plants for the Skin For centuries, plants have been grown and utilized for hair and skincare. Plants have vitamins, fatty acids, and omegas that help nourish and treat hair and skin: sunflower, mint, and aloe are three plants that are great for skincare and health. Aveeno says that plants that have omegas are important for the skin because they can help regulate the skin's oil production, improve hydration, minimize breakouts and signs of aging.

Dr. Julie Russak, a dermatologist at the Russak Dermatology Clinic says this:

CHRONIC | APRIL 2021

Vegan skincare ingredients are very minimal and natural. They generally nourish the skin rather than cause irritation. This would be ideal for sensitive skin types or condition-prone skin—types that get irritated easily. Vegan skincare can be a more soothing alternative to regular products with irritating chemicals. Our skin absorbs up to 60 percent of the products we apply onto it, which is scary to think about, especially if those products are processed and full of preservatives, chemicals, and toxins. Vegan skincare products contain more vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants to repair and hydrate the skin, which is definitely beneficial to our skin when applied daily and over time.

The Benefits of CBD for the Skin Medical News Today says: “The anti-inflammatory properties of CBD may be particularly useful for reducing potential triggers of eczema, dermatitis, and psoriasis. As CBD oil can help soothe skin and reduce the appearance of irritation, it may be useful for people with sensitive skin.”

The US National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health Search says: “Cannabinoids, like CBD, are heavily involved in managing the immune response to infection and injury. Our body’s endocannabinoid system regulates inflammation, and scientists have discovered that cannabinoids are an important factor in actually clearing up inflammation.”

Adam Friedman, Professor and Interim Chair of Dermatology at George Washington University, and Science Adviser for TruPotency says: “Cannabinoids, like CBD, are heavily involved in managing the immune response to infection and injury. Our body’s endocannabinoid system regulates inflammation, and scientists have discovered that cannabinoids are an important factor in actually clearing up inflammation.”

What Research Says about CBD for Skincare

A 2016 review discovered potential antibacterial and antifungal properties of the cannabis plant that could help prevent acne due to infections on the skin. A 2017 study found that the anti-inflammatory properties of CBD may help prevent the appearance of aging in the skin.

A 2019 study suggests that CBD could be beneficial for treating the appearance of acne scars.

In Closing Plants have a way of serving multiple purposes. They are essential to life. Plants paired with plants are an overall health flex. As always, this information is meant for insight and education, not for medical advice so as always, discuss the application of CBD skincare products with your team of healthcare professionals.

GREENWAVE WHAT STATES ARE LEGAL AND NOT LEGAL IN 2021 by Chynna Pearson

As we move farther into 2021, more states are legalizing marijuana and some are even legalizing everything. (Looking at y’all, Oregon!) Here at Chronic, we’d like to give you a comprehensive list of which states are not legal, which have a medical use, and which have both medical and recreational use.

12

CHRONIC | APRIL 2021

I

t’s no secret that the 50 states like some good old weed. Cheech and Chong are still culturally relevant Halloween costumes and they were at peak popularity in the 1970s and 80s. In fact, America has been slowly legalizing marijuana since California legalized its medical use in 1996, not long after the height of Cheech and Chong.

1

2

The bill was introduced by Republican Senator Tim Melson. Alabama medical patients cannot, however, use cannabis by smoking, vaping, or eating candy or baked products.

6

Since 2014 Alaska has legalized both medical and recreational use. In Alaska, a user or patient is allowed to carry one ounce (28 grams) and cultivate up to six plants, with only three flowering at a time. Customers in Alaska can purchase an ounce for under fifty dollars.

7

As of November 2020, Arizona has legalized medical and recreational use of marijuana. Their dispensaries are able to sell recreational customers one ounce while medical customers can obtain up to two and a half.

8

COLORADO

CONNECTICUT

Colorado has had fully legalized both medical and recreational marijuana since 2012. Additionally, as of 2021, laws have been passed that allow legal delivery of marijuana products.

Medical marijuana is legal in Connecticut. As of 2021, a bill has been introduced to potentially legalized recreational use.

So far, only Aurora, a suburb of Denver, has opted for this option.

4

ARIZONA

ALASKA

ALABAMA As of February 2021, the Alabama Senate has legalized the use of medical marijuana.

3

Their Governor Ned Lamont proposed this also stating this will decriminalize possession.

5

ARKANSAS The state of Arkansas has only legalized medical marjuana and patients cannot cultivate within their own home. If a medical patient is under 21 they cannot use any inhalant but can purchase low dosage edibles. As far as recreational goes, there is an initiative to have a vote on it in 2022.

9

DELAWARE In 2011, Delaware legalized medical marijuana but recreational use is still illegal, with the stipulation that having a small amount has been decriminalized.

CALIFORNIA Oh California, the first to start the Green Wave. Although they already had the medical use, it wasn’t until 2018 that Californian’s were able to recreationally purchase from dispensaries. Residents are allowed to have an ounce of flower and up to 8 grams of concentrates before any penalty is placed on them.

10

FLORIDA Florida is very similar to Delaware. In Florida medical marijuana was legalized in 2016 but recreational marijuana is still illegal.

GEORGIA Georgia is a little complicated, CBD is available for medical use but only available in extracts. Medical and recreational use is still, basically, illegal. However, residents are able to purchase low-THC oils.

11

12

Marijuana is completely illegal in Idaho. Residents can purchase CBD and the most THC it can contain is less than 0.3%.

17

KANSAS

15

IOWA

INDIANA

You may remember Illonois legalized recreational marijuana in 2019. Medical had been legal since 2013, but once recreational was passed, they sold out of marijuana in less than a week. Also, they decriminalized possession of less than ten grams in 2016.

Recreational is still illegal but possession of three grams has been decriminalized.

16

14

ILLINOIS

IDAHO

HAWAII Another complicated state. Medical marijuana is legal. Also, unusually, those who have medical marijuana cards from other states can use medical marijuana.

13

18

KENTUCKY No, nothing legal in these states except for CBD. That CBD can only contain up to 0.3% THC if any.

19

LOUISIANA Medical is the only marijuana legal in Louisiana, the bill that fully made this possible came about in 2016. The bill replaces the 1991 bill that read, “medical marijuana must be prescribed” which at the time was impossible because marijuana is a Schedule I drug under federal law.

20

MAINE

MARYLAND

Yes, every form of marijuana is legal in Maine!

Medical is the only form recognized in Maryland.

In 2009, the state voted to expand the medical marijuana bill to also have recreational marijuana.

Any other use is still illegal and has yet to be decriminalized, however, possession up to 10 grams is only a $100 fine.

The bill also decriminalized cannabis possession of up to 2.5 ounces

21

22

23

Michigan legalized medical marijuana in 2008 and recreational marijuana in 2018.

However, possession of more than 1 ounce (and not more than 2 ounces) outside the home is a misdemeanor and a fine of $100.

Recreational users are allowed to possess 2.5 ounces of flower and 15 grams of concentrate.

26

27

MONTANA Yes, as of January 1st, 2021 Montana has legalized both medical and recreational marjuana.

MINNESOTA

MICHIGAN

MASSACHUSETTS Massachusetts has had both medical and recreational marijuana since 2016.

24

Only medical, since 2014 becoming the 23rd state

25

MISSOURI

MISSISSIPPI Not legal here yet but, possession of marjuana in small amounts has been decriminalized in Mississippi since the 1970s.

In Missouri there has been legal medical marijuana since 2018, they have not yet legalized recreational use.

Medical will be legal this year!

28

29

NEBRASKA

NEVADA

No marijuana is legal in Nebraska

Nevada has had both medical and recreational marijuana since 2017.

NEW HAMPSHIRE Yes, but only medical. They also decriminalized marijuana possession up to 21 grams in 2017.

30

NEW JERSEY Both medical and recreational marijuana is legal in New Jersey. They were the 14th state to have medical marijuana but they didn’t legalize recreational use until November of 2020.

31

32

NEW YORK

NEW MEXICO Medical marijuana was legalized in New Mexico in 2007. They have not yet legalized recreational use but they have decriminalized it, as long as the user has less than 14 grams.

36

33

Medical marijuana is legal and recreational marijuana was decriminalized in 2019.

We all know that Oklahoma legalized medical marijuana in 2018 and we don’t have recreational yet. I’m sure you know the rest on this one!

NORTH CAROLINA It’s a ‘no’ from North Carolina.

38

OREGON Oregon is one of the earliest states, legalizing medical marijuana in 1998 and recreational in 2014. It’s since become a hot destination for cannabis vacations.

35

39

PENNSYLVANIA Medical only since 2016. However, they did decriminalize marijuana two years before that.

OHIO

NORTH DAKOTA In North Dakota, medical is legal. But as of 2017, patients cannot cultivate cannabis in their homes.

New Yorkers can have up to 2 whole ounces without any penalty.

37

OKLAHOMA

34

Medical marijuana has been legal in Ohio since 2016. They have not yet recreationally legalized.

40

RHODE ISLAND Medical marijuana became legal for like one day until it was vetoed in 2005, then in 2006 it became legal again. Recreational marijuana has been decriminalized in small amounts.

SOUTH CAROLINA Nope, not South Carolina.

41

42

43

SOUTH DAKOTA

TENNESSEE

For South Dakota, it’s being worked on. On July 1, 2021, both medical and recreational cannabis will become legal.

These states (Tennessee and Texas) are very similar in their marijuana laws, recreational is illegal.

44

TEXAS Texas is the same except they only get 0.5% THC.

In Tennessee, medical CBD is legal but it can only have 0.9% THC in it.

46

47

VIRGINIA

48

WASHINGTON

In Virginia, they have had medical marijuana since 1979, one of the first states to do so.

Medical marijuana has been legal in Washington since 1998. Recreational use wasn’t legalized until 2015.

They also decriminalized possession up to one ounce in 2020.

Medical patients can carry up to 3 ounces and recreational users can only have one.

45

49

WEST VIRGINIA Medical marijuana was legalized in West Virginia as of 2019.

VERMONT

UTAH Medical only since 2018 but it is frequently edited and in 2020 they added that seed-to-sale tracking is required and they expunged some cannabis-related convictions.

Medical 2004 and recreational 2018. One stipulation being users can only find concentrates with less than 60% THC.

50

WISCONSIN Wisconsoner’s can only use CBD.

WYOMING Wyomingites can only use CBD.

Out of all 50 states, the majority have something legal about medical marijuana.

The idea is a spectacular one that seems so far away. It has been the hope for generations for marijuana to be federally It’s fortunate that we are moving at this legalized. Not only for the benefit of less pace. There are people who never thought populated prisons but medical patients legal marijuana would even be a will have readily available natural pain possibility. Now there are dispensaries relief. across the streets from apartment buildings and CBD stores next to tanning shops. With more available medical marijuana it is also possible to lessen the opioid Even though states have legalized epidemic. marijuana, it is still federally illegal. On the Hopefully, the joint bills can steadily first of February this year, United States merge and pass, then 2021 will bless us Senators issued a joint statement stating after everything that happened in 20**. that multiple marijuana reform bills would be put together as Congress moves closer to some form of federal marijuana legalization.

Metrc Inventory Tracking

When, Where, and How? BY HIGHER ACCOUNTING

B

y now you are breathing easy, you have some more time to file your personal income tax. Oh wait, let us not forget about the upcoming reporting date, April 30th. Since the announcement of Metrc inventory tracking we have been left wondering: When, where, and how? OMMA announced the details in late February. Metrc is the seed to sale tracking software that is now required for Oklahoma inventory reporting. It is now coming close to the time you must have all your inventory input into Metrc for reporting. Also, keep in mind that you must go through training and get credentialed before you have access to Metrc reporting platform.

Metrc reporting is not for the inexperienced. Inventory control is critical in your cannabis business in more ways than one. Metrc will not warn you for errors, so incorrect inputs will be recorded and tracked until you correct them. Reduce your risk! Do not expose your business to the fines and the consequences for noncompliance. If you do not have experience with inventory management, seek professional assistance. Keep good records. Do regular physical inventory audits Have inventory control procedures and process and follow them! Plan. Whatever your goal, prepare because “something always comes up”. Be ready for surprises along the way.

A good system with a team that can help you manage your inventory will give you time to work on your business and not in it. Our team at Higher Accounting Services specialize in inventory management and cannabis bookkeeping. We can help you meet your goals by maintaining the workflow for your everyday needs. Do you have the in-house talent? We can also work with you to train your own employees to manage your systems and grow your business. What ever you choose, make sure you are on track to the April 30th deadline. If you have not already started, your behind! Get to it.

FOUR-TWENTY CHRONIC CODE: 420, THE UNITING NUMBER by Carisa Rowe

Four-twenty. Four twinny. Foretwunny. Forteny. For…twin tea?

T

hat magical number that every cannabis consumer knows no matter how you say it: four twenty means it’s time to smoke weed. If you aren’t familiar with the lore around this iconic number, allow me to summarize. Way back in the 1970s in San Rafael, California, a collective of stoners calling themselves the Waldos designated a daily sesh after school near a statue of Louis Pasteur. As luck would have it, one or more of the Waldos wound up a roadie next to Phil Lesh of Grateful Dead infamy. In the 1990s, Steven Hager of High Times Magazine made mention of 420 in an article and by 1998 had managed to solidify most of the truth about the origins of this notorious number.

Four-twenty is the chronic version of

It’s 5 o’clock somewhere In the year which shall not be named, we were denied our THC-given right to party for an entire month in celebration of Our Lady Merry Jane so I strongly suggest we find fun, smart ways to make up for that this year. The 4/20 of 2021 should be celebrated with enthusiasm. Cannabis therapy is as much a social therapy as a physical one. Rare is the cannabis user who prefers to smoke alone but the year which shall not be named ripped our ganja-given right to conjugate and elevate together. It’s only fair that we go even harder with the daily dank this month. With more folks venturing into the wild as pandemic precautions are lifted, we can expect April to be poppin’ with events and opportunities. Speaking of popping, keen shoppers will be watching their favorite local hustlers for product drops and surprise pop-up events all throughout the month. I put a call out on my socials earlier this month – BEFORE deadline by *days* (it’s nine minutes to the deadline as I type this and I have 1,521 words to go) but I didn’t get a ton of feedback.

26

CHRONIC | APRIL 2021

If you are a stoner, especially an in-the-closet or formerly in the closet cannabis consumer, the term “420” is synonymous with freedom and relaxation. Four-twenty is the chronic version of “it’s 5 o’clock somewhere” and is a not so low-key any more way of asking your fellow tokers to partake in a smoking session. The term “420 friendly” on a dating app indicates that your future boo is cool with ganja. This convenient numeric signal unites cannabis enthusiasts across the globe and provides a twice-daily opportunity to stop and inhale deeply but April 20th is where the real stoner solidarity shines.

That’s a legitimate concern and keeping patients safe in a medical marijuana program should be the primary concern for every single participant in the industry. With that in mind, there are some unique and conscientious ways to celebrate the quintessential “weedhead” holiday and have a wicked make-up month (1,438 to go). My first suggestion is legitimately to buy an Herbo. I’ve written about them before (Chronic Kitchen Gift Guide, December 2020). I think this thing is dope. The first edition wasn’t without flaws, as all things are prone, but they’ve redesigned a bit and things are much better.

CHRONIC | APRIL 2021

27

I have a choppy unboxing video of one on my socials (maybe I should go record a new one) and there’s plenty of actual ad copy on the device but the key takeaway is that this device takes social consumption to the next level. The Herbo is a fan powered combustion tool.

In similar fashion to a bong, the Herbo uses air movement and water to cool the smoke or vapor before it is propelled to you via a jet of cannabiscloud that you simply inhale without ever touching your mouth to the device. The Herbo uses a battery-powered fan to draw smoke or vapor into the water chamber where the oscillation of the fan emulsifies the smoke or vapor and particulate, something they have coined has “hydrafuge”. This reduces oils that are not fully combusted and expands noble gases in the smoke or vapor prior to you inhaling. The result is a cool, smooth inhale of cannabis-cloud, kind of like a hash hookah that shotguns the medication to you, meaning no sharing the mouthpiece necessary. The beauty of this device is its potential for literally every single 420 endeavor an eager cannabis celebrator might undertake due to its very cootieconsiderate design. Oh! Did I mention its lokal?

Herbo is the brainchild of a Tulsa native and many of its parts are sourced from Oklahoma companies. In fact, it is assembled in downtown Tulsa, just a stone’s throw from the Equality Center. Okay, so my first suggestion to celebrate 420 this year is to start a Secret Stoner or Dirty Stoner game. Round up your favorite seshing pals and designate a gift price limit. Choose a date (may I suggest one?) to exchange gifts and assign a Shopper to a Recipient, just like you do with the holiday-themed game featuring Santa (definitely a pothead, imo).

I highly suggest you shop local for this game and there are a few gift ideas in our back issues to help you get inspired. Another 420 suggestion is to celebrate each day by putting a little extra intention into your consumption. Before your morning bowl, choose the purpose for your medicine. Try new rich, exotic, high-flavor foods during this month to potentiate the efficacy of your cannabinoids. I create a vegan turmeric chai paste that absolutely intensifies the THC-related effects of cannabis. More than one recipient of one of my homemade jars has questioned whether it was infused or not. I eat terpene- and flavonoid-rich foods to intentionally increase my body’s ability to uptake cannabinoids. Some of my favorite cannabis enhancing foods include spicy teas with lots of ginger or cinnamon or cardamom, fragrant citrus, and a rainbow of vegetables. I eat international dishes daily and I up the spice to Sean Evans levels of heat. These nutrient-rich additions to your diet will give you a boost in vitamins and are guaranteed to add just a little extra therapeutic boost to your cannabis treatment. What better way to honor Our Lady of Merry Jane than to spend her benediction month giving your body the same love she does?

CHRONIC | APRIL 2021

29

There’s tons of great edibles on the medical market but I think this is a home-baked kinda swap, if you ask me. There are a couple considerations when making homemade edibles: consistent dosing and recipe consistency. Making weed butter at home isn’t hard but it does typically have a learning curve. Homemade weed butter can get scalded or burned, ruining your recipe’s flavor or degrading some of the cannabinoids.

If the butter “breaks”, meaning the fat solids separate from the liquids, your weed butter will have a hard and also runny texture. This leads to inconsistent dosing throughout your batch. There is Since we’re already talking about food no way to return “broken butter” but it and because we discussed a gift doesn’t mean you can’t still use it. exchange before that, the next most natural 420 suggestion is an infused Expect a minor change in your recipe goodie exchange. consistency and expect some differences in the dose of individual There’s thousands of recipes on the servings. If you want to create a very internet for cannabis infused goodies. consistent dose, consider picking up Pick a group of homies and hook vials of edible distillate so that you can them up with a yummy sampling of predict the dose of each serving (for some of your favorite goodies or rally example: a 1000 mg vial of edible THC the homies and get a good old distillate into 36 evenly sized cookies fashioned snack exchange going. yields a cookie between 27-28 mg THC).

Mix your edible distillate into the fat in your recipe (the butter or oil) for the most consistent dosing experience. Perhaps the perfect 420 celebration is a movie marathon of marijuana-centric cult classics. The OG Marijuana Marathon is handsdown Cheech and Chong. Grab a bag of infused-popcorn from your local shop and get couch-locked for throwback laughs. The Big Lebowski is a cornerstone of cannabis culture, but that’s, like, just my opinion man. Feel the pangs of the 90s with a Jay and Silent Bob showing or make homemade (infused) White Castle burgers and revisit Harold, Kumar, and NPH. If you’re a celebrating member of the cannabis industry, I suggest Half Baked, because chances are you either a) have a guy on couch, or b) have been/are a couch guy. Ted, Friday, How High, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas would all make exceptional themed parties. Have attendees dress up like favorite characters and have a fun prize for the best dressed.

Movie marathoning works fabulously for distanced group gatherings via services like Discord with their screen sharing feature. Many shenanigans abound behind the comfort of a computer monitor to fill in where an in-person connection isn’t always possible but if you’re lucky enough to be in person with your crew for this soiree, consider themed beverages with THC-infused syrups or sodas to round out the experience. There are a couple of events scheduled in celebration of 420.

On April 20th, 420 Events is hosting A Big Lebowski Block Party in conjunction with Gravity Dispensary. The block party starts at 4:20 p.m. and you better be on site for their flash fire sale. Stick around for vendors, giveaways, more deals, and live music. Block Party admission includes a ticket to watch The Big Lebowski at The Admiral Twin at sundown and participate in the Bug Lebowski costume contest. The event is 18 and up and tickets are $23 but patrons can purchase a $10 movie pass without attending the block party.

Lokal Source Dispensary in Owasso got in touch with me to let me know that they are rocking an all-star pop-up day for 4/20 with vendors like THCreations, Yum Cookies, Utopic Vibes, Kosmik, and Good Times in the building throughout the day. On April 17th from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., Cannabis Emporium in Tulsa is hosting a party in the parking lot with vendor booths featuring processors and growers, local artists. They’re boasting raffles, games, and other giveaways as well as interactive painting experiences, tarot reading, and more.

@Cannabis Emporium Facebook Page

I don’t have a lot of direct information about Chronic Palooza but a quick internet search promises three performance stages, VIP areas, a beer garden, education stations, a kid zone, body paint, a patient drive and very much more – including the Jack Herer Cup, a competition for cannabis cultivators and processors to show their stuff. The event is bring Xzibit and Baby Bash to perform at Crossroads Mall in Oklahoma City on April 17th and 18th. General admission for a day pass to this family-accepting event starts at $5 on their website.

3J420 Entertainment is hosting several April events and I am really excited about their “May I D.A.B. You a Question” event. I am pumped about educational events because so many patients have questions and don’t know where to find reliable information about this fascinating flower. The April MIDYA? the event focuses on concentrates and is to be held at Barn 66 Social Club in Catoosa, OK.

@3J420 Entertainment Facebook Page

@Barn 66 Social Club Facebook Page

I’m kind of out of events to mention but I did catch a rumor that a new canna-friendly facility would be accessible in April but I haven’t confirmed. Keep your eyes and ears open for details about Ablazing Grace in Pryor. If what I heard is true, they’re gonna have a hoppin’ little joint this month. My final suggestion for 420 is cannabis activism. Truly there are mountains of work still to be done in the name of cannabis. Medical cannabis needs more science-based research with proper funding. If this stokes your passion, consider drafting a letter to your local representative encouraging them to consider the importance of verifiable cannabis research. Fund-raise a family visit to one of the correction centers in Oklahoma housing mothers on cannabis charges (did you know Oklahoma incarcerates the most women per capita IN THE WORLD). Put $20 on a random inmate’s books with a note of encouragement. Research The Last Prisoner Project and find out what you can do to make a difference for victims of the war on drugs. No matter how you 420, the day (or month) is yours to do with as you will. Whether you road trip to White Castle, get baked on canna-muffins, or throw down at one of the many events this month, be cool to one another. That’s really the spirit of 420: bringing people together.

DIRECTIONS 1. In a mixing bowl with the

paddle attachment, you’ll first want to mix the salt, pepper, cheese and butter until soft. Then add the flour and spices and mix on low speed, while mixing slowly add the water and mix until the dough comes together. Now you’ll want to pat the dough into a 1” thick disc, wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for an hour.

So grab a bag of your favorite herb, twist one up and let's get cooking with a Buz!

3. If you want to get fancy and make them have the edge like cheez its you'll need a fluted pastry cutter, if not just cut them into 1 inch squares and put them on the lined baking sheets. Now you're almost ready to bake them up, but first you'll need to punch a hole in the middle of each one with a bamboo skewer, or the tip of a paring knife.

2. While that’s chillin’ in the fridge clean up and get an area ready to roll out your dough and of course get your mind right. Once that's chilled, preheat your oven to 375F, line two baking sheets with parchment paper, and let's get to rolling that dough. First you will want to divide the dough into two equal pieces and then roll each one to an ⅛” or less, that's pretty thin! You're looking to get to a 10”x12” size of dough to start cutting. 4. Now you're ready to bake, maybe 12-15 minutes, just until they are brown on the edges. Be careful not to burn them, remove from the baking sheets to a cooling rack and allow the to cool off before eating or storing. Now you have a nice THC snack you can store and share easily, have a happy 420 everyone!

arijuana is legal either medically

and/or recreationally in the majority of American states. There are many companies in the cannabis industry that are interested in giving back to their community. It is a complicated situation, however, since there are many, many states and other industries that wouldn’t even consider accepting any money from a “drug related” business. The unfortunate situation for marijuana businesses is that even if they had the drive to donate, there are also complications due to some being only cash businesses and them being unable to use banks. According to writer Tammy Puyear at the Missouri Cannabis Industry magazine, Greenway, there are many, many cannabis companies that are trying to get into giving back but many

There are many ways to consume cannabis, and the health benefits of cannabis continuously grow. If you are anything like me, I medicate based on my mood, and thanks to SQ788 I can medicate more ways than I can count while taking care of my mood every day; but this might not be the case for most residents in Oklahoma. During these unprecedented times, many people experiencing “sickness” have undoubtedly turned to cannabis as a companion to heighten creativity and elevate their mood. Yet, they still are not familiar with its health benefits. They only know what is generalized of cannabis, as in it is a better alternative than pills, and the results of consumption come as a brave knight. Here to preserve and restore homeostasis throughout the brain and body. Research in the cannabis field is progressing, in fact, in the last few years, over a hundred terpenes have been identified in cannabis. Terpenes are substances in cannabis that give the plant its specific properties such as pungent, fruity, or skunky aroma, delightful taste, crystal white trichome look, and most importantly, they provide various health benefits. When cannabis is consumed, the terpenes also bind to the human endocannabinoid system. The endocannabinoid system is literally one of the coolest systems in our body, and it ties in with cannabis so beautifully. So, how does this system work in our body? Believe it or not, it is a system that continuously works around the clock to bring us to balance by bearing the responsibility of our body’s sleeping patterns, energy levels, hunger, female reproductive process, memory, and mood to name a few. Another fun fact about the human endocannabinoid system (ECS) is its natural makeup of endocannabinoids. Endocannabinoids are like cannabinoids; the difference is endocannabinoids are made by our body. These endocannabinoids, also referred to as CB1 and CB2, are “messengers” in the body that has one job, and that is to activate specific receptors in our body to signal that the ECS needs to act; those signals usually come across as feeling nerve pain, inflammation, arthritis, mood swings, etc… In other words, the endocannabinoid system (ECS) is essential to your overall health.

CHRONIC | APRIL 2021

45

So, for those who are new to cannabis, you might be wondering how does consume cannabis interacts with the ECS? Well, besides doing a 180 degree on us, and having our backs (literally), when cannabis is consumed, the endocannabinoids in our body (CB1 and CB2) become saturated with cannabinoids (THC, CBD, CBDGA, etc); in return creating two-way communication between cells and nerves - providing us with medicinal results while allowing the body to recharge and function naturally.

Other studies have shown that cannabis can do more than just ameliorate the symptoms of arthritis. It could potentially reverse it and lead to increased improvements in mobility, inflammation, and pain; in addition, the same study showed that arthritis patients have a higher level of CB2 receptors in their damaged joints than most. A win for cannabis! As mentioned earlier, this ‘communication’ is crucial for numerous functions in the human body including those involving pain, inflammation, hunger, and mood. Research on cannabis continues to amaze me. As of now, extensive research is being conducted by The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH). NCCIH promotes they are in the process of researching the potential painrelieving properties and mechanisms of substances in the cannabis plant.

They also stated that the goal of these studies is to strengthen the evidence regarding cannabis components and their potential roles in pain management. The NCCIH is also supporting other studies on cannabis and cannabinoids, including: an observational study of the effects of edible cannabis and its constituents on pain, inflammation, and in people with chronic low-back pain. studies to develop techniques to synthesize cannabinoids in yeast. research to evaluate the relationship between cannabis smoking and type 2 diabetes.

There is no question that medicinal cannabis is solidifying its effectiveness as medicine on a continual basis. People are finding more uses for cannabis every day because the medical aspects and applications of using cannabis are becoming endless. Cannabis is offering an alternative option for thousands even millions of people around the world. It is time we weed-out the stigma!

Take arthritis for instance. One type of arthritis is osteoarthritis (also called degenerative joint disease) this is the wearing down of protective cartilage on the ends of bones. If you suffer from arthritis you are aware that it is a painful and debilitating condition characterized by joint swelling, pain, and stiffness, not to mention the decreased range of motion. So, you go to your stash, look for a good pain killer strain and consume. Within minutes you feel instant relief. That is because the cannabinoids of the strain are residing/saturating your endocannabinoids in the ECS. Just waiting to unlock the full potential of our CB1/CB2 and target those nagging symptoms. Once the ECS has done its job and receptors are saturated with cannabis, the saying “ignorance is bliss” comes true, and almost forgetting that you ever had it.

THE WORLD OF CANNABINOIDS AND TERPENES

CBN

CBN is the cannabinoid, Cannabinol (CBN). It is found only in trace amounts in some cannabis cultivars. Its mostly found in aged Cannabis. So that older yellowing weed keeps it to make some salve. It is mildly psychoactive, unlike the strong psychoactive THC. It is derived from tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THC-A). CBN is created when the THC-A of a cultivar oxidizes, giving it its yellowing or cured effect. The cannabinoid tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) breaks down after prolonged periods of time. The degradation can be accelerated by exposing dried plant matter to oxygen and heat. Cannabinol (CBN) can be of huge benefit so let your cannabis cure properly.

Where To Smoke In Oklahoma

CHRONIC | APRIL 2021

52

GOT SHISHA? I GOT HASH! hen I lived in Norman in approximately 2009, one of the most popular student W hangouts was a Hookah Bar downtown, a block or two away from Guestroom

Records. In those days (oh lord, I’m getting old) it was a great hangout for students who hadn’t yet reached legal drinking age but still wanted to go out with friends and do something fun.

You’d gather around a huge hookah with your friends, sit down on some pillows, puff on shisha, and chill! The highly-concentrated smoke would knock you on your ass, similar to a blunt—and of course, we always smoked a few of those before we headed there anyway. Thus, I was pleasantly surprised to find Hubbly Bubbly Hookah Lounge when I was researching a new cannabis-friendly venue to highlight for you folks. They’re tucked away in a shopping center in the Asian district of Oklahoma City, right off NW 29th St. and Classen Blvd. When I decided to stop by, it seemed like it was a relatively slow Wednesday night. I was greeted at the front, and, upon informing them I was just here to smoke cannabis, they asked if I needed any hemp wraps, a rolling tray, or an ashtray. I had already rolled myself a joint before going in, but I was quite happy to know that they’re stocked with supplies if ever I was in need! He led me into the main lounge, where maybe four or five other patrons were puffing on hookahs while seated at couches spread throughout the room. Plexiglass partitions hanging from the ceiling separated the smoking areas, allowing for people to sit across from strangers without having to breathe on each other. I could also tell I wasn’t the only one who had brought along some cannabis to smoke, judging by the aroma in the air. I picked a spot somewhat near the back, away from most people—that was my policy already before COVID-19, and now it’s become my policy even more so. After ordering some water and hot tea (they have a small, but tasty menu), I made myself comfortable and started puffing on some LA PopRockz live hash rosin through my trusty Boundless Terp Pen (if y’all haven’t tried any hash from Craft Kings, or flower from Greenleaf Cultivations, I highly suggest you get ye to Tegridy!).

CHRONIC | APRIL 2021

About halfway through my time at the lounge, just before I finished up my chicken tender basket, a group of African businessmen came in and sat behind me, looking to smoke some shisha. This made me slightly nervous about how they would react to me smoking cannabis around them, since you can never really be sure how people from other countries will react to that.

My joint beckoned (rolled with Poprockz flower no less), but I had too much of an appetite to smoke flower just yet. I can’t say why, but I find that, when I’m hungry, a dab goes down much easier than a hit of the flower. The menu is limited as far as food, but what it has to offer is tasty. I went for a chicken tender basket with Mediterranean seasoned fries and was quite pleasantly surprised. Sure, the fries aren’t hand-cut or anything, but they reminded me of Charley’s Steakery in the mall a bit.

For example, the majority of the cooks I worked with at a Mexican restaurant several years ago viewed cannabis as taboo, due to its affiliation with Latin-American cartels, and would tease and almost look down on me for being a cannabis smoker.

And that seasoning! The chicken strips were nothing super special, but they did taste like chicken McNuggets in the best possible way. I would absolutely tear that up again.

Yet these same folks would gleefully go to town on a bag of cocaine. Different strokes, I guess.

You have to have a card and bring your own.” To my amusement, rather than being at all bothered by my smoking, they had asked the waiter if they could get some too! If only they knew about applying for an out-ofstate OMMA card (and if only I had told them! But just like sitting in crowds of people, meeting strangers feels weird right now).

Speaking of crowds of people, it took a surprisingly short amount of time for the lounge to fill up, and for it to turn from a slow night into a busy one. With my fear of crowded spaces coming back full-force thanks to the pandemic (so many reasons to thank it, truly. We’ll have to compile a list one day), I opted to pay my tab and head home rather than stick around. And I’m a lightweight when it comes to being around secondhand smoke anyways, cigarette or hookah; I had a headache already! I paid my tab on the neat little electronic tablet the staff walks around with, and headed out after being sure I was golden to drive. I have to say though, this seems to be one of those places that I’m to the last one to know about. When I reached out to friends and coworkers about it, they already had stories and memories of this place.

In what seems like eons ago, I used to get my hair cut at Connie’s a couple doors down, but somehow I had never actually visisted the nearby hookah lounge. But hey, maybe I’m not the only one, and maybe their acceptance of cannabis usage at least will convince some folks to give it a try, even if they don’t love to hookah. Overall, I’d have to say this isn’t my absolute favorite place to smoke cannabis, although it’s definitely a really great indoor option. And it’s perfect if you want to go out with a small group of friends-some of whom smoke cannabis, some of whom don’t-to somewhere where alcohol isn’t on the menu, but you can still do something fun and relaxing. If you’ve always wanted to smoke some cannabis with your hookah though, check them out!

I lit my joint and settled in, taking in the music and the collection of local art they had on the walls. As I took a few hits, and bumped a list of what I can only describe as my “middle school jams” (hits like “Promiscuous” by Nelly Furtado, “In Da Club” by 50 Cent, “Ride With Me” by Nelly) bumped in the background, I hear the waiter behind me very politely say to the group of gentlemen “Oh no, we don’t have that here.

The Fabulous Cannabis team embodies everything about an authentic, small-batch craft grow. This of course gives way for absolutely phenomenal flowers. There are some of the most impressive flowers I have been lucky enough to see in my lifetime. The sheer time, energy, and love and the exquisite outcome of the Cannabis they grow are aweinspiring, to say the least. The true small-batch top-shelf flower is simply that, it is the hands-on attention each plant gets that makes all the difference. With smaller batches, cultivators can dry and cure more efficiently making terpene profiles stronger and even potency.

ut on the hunt again and Oklahoma’s finest Cannabis products are the prize, as always. As April showers bring May flowers, the March Cannabis flower harvests will turn into the April flowers on dispensary shelves across our great state. Seeing the abundant flowers and such amazing improvement every run by so many Cultivators is one of my favorite things about Harvest time. The quality of flowers across the State has significantly improved in just 6 months' time alone, not to mention from this time last year. So, with April bringing new life all around us and that infamous proverbial smokers holiday showing up, I wanted to look at some of the most exceptional of course, but also unique flowers in Oklahoma.

Hand trim is a must for small batches like Fabulous, carefully handled, and exceptionally trimmed, the time spent on the flower always shows.

In smaller dosages, it can be a very functional strain, but at higher dosages, it can indeed get extremely relaxing to the point where sleep can result. Great medicinal value for general relaxation, anti-anxiety, appetite stimulation, sleep aid, and pain relief.

The Urkle is known as one of the most medicinally beneficial strains that exist. The Purple Urkle strain is almost always the pretty girl at the party. Those deep purple hues layered with violent shades make a perfect background for the splashes of fiery orange that adorn the beauty. Trichomes cling to her, leaving a frosting dipped appearance all over the flower. The aroma and taste are very well known sitting the standard. They compliment each other perfectly. A skunky and sweet dark fruit goodness is overpowering, almost like fruity pebbles and fruit loops join forces to jump out at you when you open the jar. The grape notes hit hard and leave a fruity, creamy yet gassy profile that is unmistakable. The flavor matches the fruity goodness of the grape in all its glory, hitting first, followed by a super smooth gassiness. The flavor profile on the Urkle is a must-try, it’s so unique yet the superior genetics shine through and you can taste so many strains that came out of this Cannabis Veteran. This Purple Urkle grown by the fine folks over at Fabulous Cannabis Co. is simply a must find and try for the Indica lovers, the connoisseurs, the Cannabis enthusiast, in general, will all love the Urkle. Thank you so much to Fabulous for providing Oklahoma patients with consistent, high quality meds. Don’t miss the Urkle and other show stoppers by my friends at Fabulous. Fabulous Cannabis is also opening a fabulously pink dispensary in North Edmond very soon. When you see the Pink Cannabis leaf, you will know your going to have a simply Fabulous day! Now back to that Urkle, A California medical scene cut that is dated back to the late 1980s, the Urkle (also called Purple Urple, and Purple Urkel) is thought to have come from the Mendo Purps line. It's the purple plant of choice for many, as it's known for being more potent and flavorful than many of the others. Purple Urkle is thought to be an inbred line dating back to at least 1989, possibly quite a bit earlier. Its origins are thought to be that of a pure Indica, likely coming from Afghanistan or Pakistan. It made its way into the NorCal medical clubs in the mid-'90s and has been going strong ever since, being crossed into a wide variety of strains due to its unmistakable coloration, smell, and overall stability. Very relaxing and mood-elevating, it's generally not as narcotic and drowsy as many Purple strains.

CANNABIS SURVIVOR By Kayla Johnson

John Koumbis is one such patient who dipped his toes into the green waters before the medicinal benefits were truly appreciated, with results familiar to most of us at one point or another. “In the past, marijuana was just that: marijuana. We smoked it to get high, and then we ate a lot!” He joked,” Never did I realize the true medicinal values of the plant.” Now a well-known pillar of the cannabis industry and community in Oklahoma, Koumbis, of Mustang, grew up in a strictly religious household, another aspect many of us here may be familiar with. As was so often the case, cannabis was looked down upon, though he says even his parents had a small stash at home. “It was a very religious house, and it was really frowned upon, but I know that when we were younger, my parents would smoke it! They kept it stashed in the record holder.”

For him, one of the best parts of being neck-deep within the cannabis industry is not only witnessing the change to the plant and the industry firsthand but being a part of helping people regain their health. “To be honest, it has changed a lot. To see the power of this healing plant, healing people, and helping people get off of pain pills and stuff is truly amazing. The stigma that still surrounds this plant, however, is crazy.” That stigma that still lingers, even as more and more people experience cannabis for themselves, is a common, frustrating thing that most of us have experienced at least once since bringing cannabis into our lifestyles. What lessens the sting, at least in part, is the knowledge that legally, medical cannabis finally has protection against discrimination. That relief is commonly felt among patients as well, and for Koumbis, having that legal-security and seeing the positive stories from the patients has helped keep his attitude in a positive direction, even in the face of that stigma. “It’s amazing, because we no longer have to fear getting in trouble when carrying this medicine, and it’s amazing because it’s not just my life that’s been changed for the better,” he said. “The change is in the patients that have been struggling with chronic pain and have found relief; that has changed my life, my views, and my attitude. To see the success stories is where I get the most satisfaction.” Anyone who knows Koumbis knows that his passion has taken root in JKJ Processing, Inc., the company he’s owned and operated for over two years.

It’s been rising in use and popularity for decades as medical research advances, and people discover the vast medicinal benefits of the plant, but for the ‘old school’ consumers who’ve seen a thing or two, it’s a stark turnaround from the plant they first experienced before legalization was even a dream within reach. For many of those same consumers, seeing the spread of legalization now brings both a newfound sense of freedom and a new motivation to help educate future patients.

Beyond his passion for the patients, Koumbis has grown to appreciate the plant for his own personal needs. “I mostly use it at night, and my go-to strain 99% of the time is definitely 9 Pound Hammer,” he said. “ I use it because I have restless leg syndrome, and smoking takes the pain away and lets me sleep all night. I don’t medicate during the day because it just makes me tired, it doesn’t allow me to focus like I need to." Keeping patients healthy and medicated plays a big part in Koumbis and what keeps him going, but an even bigger piece of the puzzle is his family. “I’m married to an amazing woman. She 100% supports me and supports this industry, and I wouldn’t be able to do it without her love and support, along with our kids. Even all of my friends have really shown their support for my work, and I’m grateful for it.” While medical legalization has opened up a new path in life for Koumbis and his family, he admits he’s not as keen on the possibility of recreational legalization for Oklahoma just yet. “Personally, I don’t want to see it go recreational in Oklahoma yet. We have a lot of work to do in our medical program still, and until that is done, we do not need recreational. We need people at the capital that understand the medicine and that have the best interests of the patients in mind as well.” It’s obvious that Koumbis has become equally passionate about protecting the medical cannabis program and patient rights, but the other priority of his efforts outside the canna-kitchen at JKJ is the dire need of continued education for cannabis patients, novice and veteran alike. “That’s the million-dollar question: how can we encourage new patients when it comes to trying cannabis? The biggest part of that is educating them about it. We have to first, find out what is ailing them. When we have that info, we can move into different methods of consumption. It’s about going slow, and educating them every step of the way,”

For him, taking a hands-on approach to the products his company creates starts with talking to patients, and actually listening to the current needs of the community. “I have always strived to help patients; they’re the 57% that voted 788 into law. I try to provide good, clean medicine options for patients, and every day is a learning experience for me. I love coming into the kitchen and doing research and development for the patients. I’ve always been patient-driven, and the day that I’m not is the day that I stop doing this.”

he said. “If a first-time patient takes too much, there’s a very high possibility that they will never come back to this plant, so we have to do better at educating each other and those newcomers to the community as well.”
