Spring is just around the corner and the cannabis community here in Oklahoma is booming. We have some new legislation that's in the works to expand medical marijuana licenses to nonresidents. With that said a lot of people are now asking the question: Is adult-use legislation coming to Oklahoma soon?

REC OR WRECK?
I said what I said. The first step to being ready: stop calling it “recreational”. That undermines therapeutic cannabis and the efforts of the medical cannabis community to establish legitimacy in postprohibition scientific circles. The term you are going to use is “adult-use” because that is accurate. Cannabis activists would like to legalize the consumption of cannabis products for adult users over the age of 21. Cannabis activists are not trying to promote cannabis as a sport (although, I’d try out for those Olympics).

If you are a glutton for punishment, scroll stoner social media forums in search of information regarding Oklahoma’s recreational market potential. You will find lots of opinions about our current cannabis market and even bigger opinions about adult-use cannabis. In scrolling the forums, the statement which stands out most often is the assertion that “Oklahoma is basically rec already.”
RECREATIONAL CANNABIS THE PROS AND CONS By Carisa Rowe
Many users reflect this sentiment and use it as a one-off reply seemingly only to stimulate discord in the comments. Oklahoma is not an adult-use market. Presuming that we illustrate a lack of communication from our cannabis community to the general public. It is true that there are virtually no hurdles to accessing our medical cannabis program. Our disadvantages are small in comparison to the hurdles that patients face in other states. There are no qualifying conditions, the OMMA registration fee is nominal, and we have no shortage of purchase points as consumers. You can thank your nearest SQ 788 activist for those protections. In developing the language around SQ 788, the citizen initiative that legalized medical cannabis in Oklahoma, activists carefully selected their language to ensure that the broadest scope of patients would be entitled to treat their health with cannabis.
Oklahoma isn’t ready for recreational cannabis. CARISA ROWE
The activists who worked on a petition and ballot language were aware that Oklahomans in 2018 were not quite ready to legalize adult-use cannabis but they astutely recognized that lawmakers would work tirelessly to pick apart the law and restrict access for patients while inventing new regulations and pay-to-play fees and fines. In being very direct about the limitlessness of the law, activists ensured that patients in Oklahoma would be able to access medical cannabis without excessive political overreach. Even though our medical cannabis program provides broad access for citizens, it does present some challenges for consumers. Some consumers are unable to participate in our medical program due to employment, medical oversight, or financial incapacity. The fee to be a licensed OMMA patient is $104, which provides legal documentation that you can purchase and carry cannabis within state lines, however, that fee-only pays the state. Patients must first obtain a recommendation from a licensed medical professional to submit to the OMMA. Obtaining this recommendation can be costly and time-consuming. Proponents of adult-use cannabis contend that this presents an unnecessary burden for consumers. I can’t agree more; it is frustrating to pay to play, in particular when medical providers cannot legally offer guidance for cannabis therapy due to federal laws. It is aggravating to pay a fee to a government that lied to citizens for decades in order to access the very product they lied about. In this regard, I got nothing. All I can legitimately respond with is “thems the breaks.”
The reason is simple: infrastructure. Oklahoma took a running dive into the legal cannabis market. In true Sooner fashion, we were a fully operational cannabis market in record time. In true Sooner fashion, we were a fully operational cannabis market in record time. That worked out really well for a handful of people, in particular patients, but it left Oklahoma’s lawmakers and bureaucrats scrambling to support a steam engine that was already rolling on the tracks. In order to govern the booming cannabis market and maintain the evergrey federal compliance minimums, OMMA needed funding.
12 CHRONIC | MARCH 2021
The only way a state like Oklahoma approves a measure like legalizing the Devil’s lettuce is if they are gonna make a buck off it… And make a buck they have! Except, most of the dollars they are raking in aren’t coming from patient fees; the big money is in tax dollars. With roughly 380,000 Oklahomans, or around 10% of the population, registered as patients, the state isn’t banking off patient licensing fees, especially when considering patient licenses are valid for two years. If the state isn’t making a fortune off patient licenses, then one might wonder why even bother with the fee?
The fees collected from patients are essentially a down-payment on the costs of creating the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana Authority and the ongoing costs of this oversight agency are maintained through the collection of business fees and fines. If you think that an adult-use market simply pops up opening access and costs go down, you are in for a rude awakening. Consumer taxes in a “rec market” are astronomical. You might not realize this but SQ 788 protected patients from being overtaxed by restricting medical cannabis sales taxes to seven percent. Consider how a 25% rec tax would add up on your dispensary runs over just a couple of purchases. Compare that projected cost to the biennial patient licensing fee and a mere 7% tax on purchases Another key factor in the SQ 788 verbiage is that it effectively protects Oklahoma business owners by limiting out-of-state investor holdings. Activists intended to create a bubble of opportunity for local entrepreneurs to stake their claim in our medical cannabis market and did so by restricting the percentage of ownership a non-resident could hold. This stymies the influx of established brands capable of obliterating the local business competition. Lobbyists with out-of-state interests are always working on politicians to amend that verbiage and, left unchecked, will be successful in granting themselves access to a bigger piece of our pot pie (not sorry).
Adult-use cannabis would immediately pop the protection bubble granted to Oklahomans by our current medical cannabis law, leaving passionate Oklahomies empty-handed after hard work as businesses that are still establishing brand loyalty are overtaken by recognizable, highly-developed brands from markets that have existed for years prior to ours. Depending on how you look at that, it could be a good thing, I suppose. The primary factor of brand success is consistency. Brand consistency creates brand loyalty and brand loyalty dictates market value.
14 CHRONIC | MARCH 2021
The biggest failure we can do to Oklahoma residents is open a wider opportunity for established businesses to enter and sweep our market. While the tax revenue generated by large brands could initially serve our state infrastructure, it will fall off quickly as large corporations ultimately benefit from their ability to influence consumer behavior while manipulating our lesser experienced infrastructure. The resultant plucking ground of eager-eyed Oklahoma cannabis entrepreneurs, not yet fully familiar with the game, could quickly look like a minefield of failed partnerships.
Adult-use cannabis would immediately pop the protection bubble granted to Oklahomans by our current medical cannabis law, leaving passionate Oklahomies emptyhanded after hard work as businesses that are still establishing brand loyalty are overtaken by recognizable, highly-developed brands from markets that have existed for years prior to ours. Creating a stable consumer market is a desirable result of industry stabilization as it allows state budgets to accurately forecast their tax revenues for infrastructure and rainy day funds. Big companies are able to produce more inventory due in part to having already achieved success in brand development. Bringing outside experience is a wonderful opportunity to learn better practices and to refine processes that have been somewhat overlooked in the development of our market. Being the eager beavers we are, Sooner Stoners leaped into the legal market with little cannabis business acumen. Some of my personal experiences have included whistle-blowing on a garden that was poisoning patients, reporting a sexual predator, enduring psychological abuse and physical bullying, and repeatedly going unpaid for completed work. When I reported the poisoned flower, none of the agencies I contacted could intervene. Our market was new. OMMA was still operating on its initial emergency rules. The Department of Agriculture and the Department of Environmental Quality were both restricted by the lack of governing guidelines. A more established market might have prevented poisoned flower from going to market. Established brands with corporate standards of operating may create a more stable employment environment; they will certainly influence bureaucratic oversight and that affects every aspect of conducting a cannabis business. Legalizing adult-use cannabis presents some wins that are hard to ignore. For instance, in states that permit adult-use cannabis, teen cannabis use decreased.
CHRONIC | MARCH 2021
15
Within two years of legalizing their “recreational” market, teen marijuana use decreased by nearly 12% in Colorado, as reported in the National Survey on Drug Use and Health. It is reassuring to know that responsible, well-informed legalization, carried out with adequate infrastructure, supported by ethically sourced and appropriated tax revenues resulted in a much-desired decrease in teen drug use. As a former professional in the substance abuse sector, I cannot exclaim the magnitude of such a reduction in adolescent substance use with enough enthusiasm. Adult-use legalization reduces crime, including black market activity and organized crime.
It restricts law enforcement from utilizing cannabis as a discriminatory factor in interactions. Additionally, ending cannabis prohibition entirely would allow multiple agencies to utilize their budgets in much more productive ways. Adult-use legalization would cancel the enforcement of cannabis laws thus freeing police resources to focus on serving and protecting its citizens. Adult-use of cannabis has been correlated to a reduction in DUIs and trafficrelated deaths. Adult-use access provides a stigma-free environment for consumers who partake in a sticky bowl to socialize with friends. Ending cannabis prohibition would be an extraordinary win for racial equality. The litany continues… and feel free to @ me with your feedback (@groovygrower on IG). It isn’t that adult-use cannabis is a monster that Oklahomans should be defending against. Quite the opposite. An ideal adult-use market in Oklahoma looks like established protections for Oklahomans in business. It includes restricted access to industry holdings for out-ofstate brands and it establishes tiered licensing costs for organizations with the financial capacity to conduct business in volume as well as tiered penalties for these organizations so that they uphold high standards. In 2018, the Canadian Medical Association published an editorial calling the legalization plan [of recreational marijuana] an “uncontrolled experiment in which the profits of cannabis producers and tax revenues are squarely pitched against the health of Canadians.” We can look to our northern neighbors for examples of what works and what not to do but the primary outtake is that haste makes waste and there’s no reason to beat the gun.
Sowing Chaos THE IMPORTANCE OF CANNABIS SEEDS

The goo, with the genetic coding of millennia of the butterfly before it, then restructures itself into an insect with a hardened exoskeleton, long legs, and ornate wings, nothing like the creature it was. THE LIGHT POWER IS THE EXPANDING, OUTGOING, DUALIZING, INCREASING EXPRESSION OF CHAOS, RESPONSIBLE FOR THE NEW BIRTH, CREATION, INCARNATION, AND VARIETY. THE DARK POWER IS THE CONTRACTING, RETURNING, TRANSCENDING, WITHDRAWING EXPRESSION OF CHAOS, RESPONSIBLE FOR DEATH, DISSOLUTION, REABSORPTION, SIMPLICITY, AND RETURN TO THE SOURCE.

seeds.
The primary intention of every seed is simply to create more seeds and it relies on a fair bit of measurable chaos to achieve that goal. In order to germinate, a seed needs to experience a very particular set of environmental circumstances. In nature, the life of a cannabis plant is roughly a year. This cycle begins at germination, when a flowering plant is mature enough to receive pollen from a mature male plant. In nature, the mature female plant dies and withers, leaving seeds in the deadfall over winter. That deadfall becomes decay through decomposition or consumption and elimination, thus creating nutrientrich environments on the surface of the soil which provide an insulating barrier for seed dormancy. Once conditions are favorable for germination, typically in the spring, when soil temperatures begin to stabilize and the soil is consistently damp, the real chaos magic begins.
CHRONIC | MARCH 2021
21
If you were to examine a cross-section of a cannabis seed, like the one in this illustration, you would likely have no idea what you were looking at, however, science would tell you that unique structures already exist in the seed which become the individual parts of the plant. The “cot” layer in the diagram is where the structure for the cotyledon resides. The cotyledon is the embryonic leaf that first erupts when a seedling breaks the soil, a sort of vegan placenta if you will. The cotyledon is a small, rounded pair of leaves which protects the shoot apex and epicotyl as the shoot forges its way through the dark, wet soil to light, carbon dioxide-rich air. At the same time that juicy green plant material is erupting from the seed coat, or testa, there is a network of roots, covered in tiny “hairs” rhizoids, snaking its way through the substrate in search of water in order to harvest nutrients that can be converted into food for the mass growing above the dark.
As the roots search and discover available nutrients, the plant increases in size. As the plant increases in size, the roots must also grow, ever searching. All of this measurable, definable success: the cultivation of a mature plant – all relies on multitudes of chaos coming together in predictable fashion. This scientific reality is illustrated in the Mandelbrot set, a mathematical equation used to identify patterns of chaos. Benoit Mandelbrot, a chaos theorist and mathematician, recognized that chaos is measurable and created an equation wherein solving the problem recreates the problem, thus developing a pattern that is unpredictable but still confined by the same rigors of traditional mathematics. Mandelbrot, also of fractal theory fame, developed this set to define chaos in nature, particularly in plants, wherein patterns are definable even when they do not follow the standard pattern. As growers, we are uniquely familiar with pattern not following pattern. We are all obsessed with recreating the sort of consistent chaos that only nature herself can contain: heat, light, moisture, humidity, transpiration rates, and so on. Consistency is the paramount goal of any garden because consistency provides the greatest opportunity to identify inconsistency – problems are more visible when they stand out. Where chaos theory explains that we create a problem in bringing cannabis cultivation out of nature and into production, chaos magic provides the solution. To understand why cannabis cultivation is truly magic you must first understand the set of conditions necessary for germination to occur.Every cannabis seed you have seen should be covered in a hard, sealed “shell” called the testa, or seed coat.
If the seed coat is broken or incomplete, it is unlikely that the embryonic material in the seed will produce a healthy plant with predictable growth. Seed coats for cannabis plants should be hard and beige to brown in color with mottling or spotting on the surface. Soft seeds or seeds that are pale, yellow, or green are not likely to germinate strong plants. Germination occurs when the seed coat is exposed to moisture and heat which soften the testa and break dormancy of the seed. Once the testa has been breached, moisture stimulates hormone production and nutrient uptake from the cotyledon. Germination is best encouraged in the dark to avoid light-decomposition of carbonic gases which expels oxygen too quickly and fixes carbon, resulting in a hardened seed that is unable to vegetate. When conditions are chaotically perfect, the protective cotyledon leaves store all the necessary nutrients for seed germination. The cotyledon drive epicotyl growth and growth of the radicle and hypocotyl. The hypocotyl is the critical juncture in plant biology where the structure of growth interchanges. It is this juncture through which all plant communication travels as this is the location where the plant switches from carbon-dioxide-loving, chlorophyll-rich plant mass to juicy, fuzzy, water-loving roots. From this juncture, the taproot, or radicle is formed and from it, roots branch and twist through the substrate.
If the cannabis seed has experienced stress prior to germination, any of these biologic processes can be interrupted, causing a deviation or even failure. This natural deviation is a key component of chaos theory and the science use to study these interruptions in expression is called epigenetics, but more on this momentarily. By working hard to understand the outcomes of individual chaos events, the grower is able to persuade the development of a seed into a mature plant. The most desirable plant for a grower is a female plant because females produce sticky, trichome-covered flowers, aromatically laden with cannabinoid-rich terpene oils and males just mess that all up with their dusty, over-eager pollen eruptions. Cannabis plants are an easily influenced set, notably for being persnickety while in flower but the truth is that weed plants ain’t even coming to the party without some pretty boujee conditions.
CHRONIC | MARCH 2021
23
In order to encourage your cannabis seeds to develop female plants, aim for slightly increased nitrogen levels in your early feedings. Lower potassium levels for the first couple of weeks to limit male hormone growth. Keep grow room temps cooler in the early weeks and aim for slightly higher humidity. If you can manipulate your light spectrum, dial up the blues to stimulate female growth hormones and limit your day to 14 or 16 hours until rapid foliage growth starts. Avoid stressing seedlings as this particular chaos leads to male development. Not coincidentally, stress can also “herm” your plants, causing part or all of a female plant to develop male anatomy in an attempt to propagate seeds. For the uninitiated, “popping” seeds can be exciting and daunting.
Aside from the conditions mentioned above, burgeoning growers should use clean water that has a pH value of 6.0 to 6.5. Your water should not contain any nutrients or other additives as the cotyledon contains all of the material necessary for germination. Once the plant has broken the surface of your substrate and has begun growing fan leaves, you can slowly introduce nutrients and other beneficial organisms. Start light and watch your leaf pattern for indications of healthy plant growth. After the cotyledon erupt and open, the seedling should develop a pair of single blade fan leaves, followed by a tri-blade pair or more until developing the infamous five-blade (or more) pattern. Keep lights twelve to eighteen inches from the canopy of your seedlings to encourage well-paced growth. Back to that big word I mentioned a couple paragraphs back: epigenetics. Epigenetics focuses on how DNA expression deviates from the DNA programming without affecting the sequence of DNA. Epigenetics studies how phenotypes are influenced without changing the genotype, or how the introduction of chaos can alter the performance of a particular varietal without destroying the genetic structure of it. Maintaining seed integrity until germination is a first defense in upholding the genetic potential of your soon-to-be plants. Providing a healthy, clean, informed environment is akin to choosing a healthy nutrition and an interactive daycare for your infant.
Respecting the power of a seed and honoring its cultivation are tantamount to dutiful stewardship of a vegetating plant and the doting care of a flowering plant. Whether you believe in magic or not, it’s easy to see why commercial cultivation looks like both chaos and sorcery: it is resultscentered, utilizing all of the knowledge of practitioners and theorists who came before us to achieve a successful harvest, despite the quantifiable chaos that challenges us. It is our interruption of the natural life cycle that creates all of the unnecessary chaos in a production garden, requiring cultivators to draw on a wide scope of skills in order to succeed. I can’t imagine more complete allegory for personal growth. In this regard, the grower is both the solution and the problem, as we each individually are to our own success and strife. The outcome of the plant is subject to the grower’s capacity for magic (or science) much as we are limited by our ability to embrace our innate strengths and admit our individual weaknesses. Balance is key and the success of your garden, or your magic, is dependent solely on your commitment to orchestrating it. Should a pesky pollinator or unplanned hermaphrodite interrupt your flowering progress, you can rest assured that it is simply plant biology seeking to set balance to the chaos you introduced. It is important to remember that cannabis seeds have been holding magic for far longer than we have been growing it.

SO, YOU WANNA TALK ABOUT CONCENTRATES BY CHYNNA PEARSON
Cannabis comes in all types of forms whether it's the classic flower edibles creams or even the isolated CBD one of the most elusive and confusing forms of cannabis is the concentrate or wax. The average marijuana consumer is not well versed in concentrates and the like. Classically, people who smoke marijuana are into a flower or even edibles but as the future runs tortoise at an incredible speed the new breed of marijuana smokers are choosing concentrates over the flower. When thinking of trying cannabis concentrates, the best thing for someone to do is to make sure they have all the correct tools so everything can run as smoothly as possible. Unlike the usual flower, what you need to smoke concentrates can be rather extensive compared to a White Owl wrap, some backwoods, or even a pipe or bong. But, before we get into how to use them, we should probably cover what exactly concentrates are.
WHAT EXACTLY ARE CANNABIS CONCENTRATES? important thing to realize is that the THC is exactly that, concentrated. Most every concentrate you will encounter has been over three times the percentage of the THC in flower, it can be from 85% to even a staggering 99%. Pretty insane! The only problem with this fact is that it can become difficult to dose properly. It is important when experimenting with concentrates to take your time and pace yourself. Even experienced smokers and edible users can be caught off guard by its potency.

pretty cool.
Sizes can range from the tip of your pink all the way up to multiple grams. (This is something I do not recommend. If you’ve seen it done it was more likely for the “likes” than actually medicating. Also, if your tolerance is that high it may be time for a break.) Then, safely use the torch and heat up the nail or banger like you would a nectar collector or enough to see the piece glow orange or red. The temperature you take a hit at varies from person to person as some of it has to do with preference as the size of the wax placed on metal dabber. There may be other ways to consume concentrates that I wasn’t able to mention here. If you’d like to try cannabis concentrates, be sure to ask your budtenders any questions you have. The most important thing about medicating with marijuana is to feel comfortable consuming it. If you’re unsure about something, your budtender will know and help you. Lastly, when I say potent I’m being serious. If you’ve never tried concentrates they really are incredibly high in THC percentage, even experienced people who medicate often have been shocked at the speed and intensity it can hit you at. Take your time, just like with high potency edibles. If you don’t feel it yet, wait, don’t take more. Either way, you’ll be safe though. So, don’t be too worried. Happy medicaiting! Stay safe and ask questions!

THE WORLD OF CANNABINOIDS AND TERPENES
Written by Dr. Pepper Hernandez, ND, PhD, BCHP, CNHP, CTC
DELTA 9 Oh, the wonderful world of cannabis. Delta 9 also know as Delta 9 Tetrahydrocannabinol has been given a ton of press as being the cannabinoid of choice when choosing a cultivar for psychoactivity. THC, being a cannabinoid, is processed by the endocannabinoid system. Just like CBD, CBN, CBG, and other cannabinoids that are finally being researched independently of one another. The cannabinoid Delta 9 THC is very low in the hemp plant, which contains only about 0.3 percent of the compound. But other cannabis cultivars can have amounts at high as 30% and upwards. Concentrates or hash can even have over 50% which is extremely high. Tetrahydrocannabinol was first identified by two scientists Dr. Raphael Mechoulam – along with Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel, in 1964. It was known as one of the most prominent cannabinoids in most cannabis cultivars and the primary psychoactive ingredient in the plant according to their finding and the records in the Journal of the American Chemical Society which can be found at pubs.acs.org Website link. Studies have shown that Delta 9 THC binds directly to the CB1 receptor which is predominantly found in the very important central nervous system.
This is because its molecular structure is perfect for the human body. Most bodies work well with cannabis. In those cases, the THC attaches itself to the part of their brain responsible for controlling our movement, thoughts, and memory. A huge positive attribute of THC in my opinion is that it is an anti-inflammatory. Inflammation contributes to a wide range of conditions, and since Delta 9 THC has been studied and has shown to help, this gives us hope for the future in cannabis medicine. It is widely used in the manufacture of products that target inflammation.

Where To Smoke In Oklahoma
CHRONIC | MARCH 2021

WORDS BY PHILIP RODRIGUEZ
Afoot and a half of snow slowly melting away, the most wide-open marijuana market in the country (seriously, we have the least restrictions on processors and sales of any market), tax refunds on the way, and possibly the widest selection of live hash rosin on the planet. Seriously, find me another market with as much quality hash rosin as we have in Oklahoma! Oregon and Colorado have some solid-looking stuff from a few good processors, and I'm sure California can compete with us given how long it's been legal there, but I simply can't find anywhere else that has a WeedMaps or Leafly menu with as diverse a hash selection as we have. Sometimes I'll sit and just contemplate how amazing it is. Just a little over a year ago, I knew very little if anything about hash rosin. I was a joints-only guy--just flower for me, thanks! And then I discovered the Boundless Terp Pen, saw how easy it was to dab just about anything with it just about anywhere, and my life changed. Hash rosin saved my life, no joke: it got me through the two most heartbreaking romantic splits I've ever experienced (Thanks 2020! Go fuck yourself!), countless nights battling my depression, every struggle I've had with my digestive system, and it's the way I end every one of my days. Between live hash rosin and FECO, my quality of living is significantly higher than it would be otherwise. But with all of that being said, where's a good place to smoke and dab away from home? Here’s a little “Best Of” section for you all with my current favorites.

If The Pump wasn't closed, it would be difficult to decide what to choose for my first shoutout as far as my favorite smoking spots. With their extensive drink selection (especially those delightful adult Capri-suns), their patio cat, heaters for cold weather and fans and misters for warm weather, TV's, and ample space to smoke and dab, this has long been one of my absolute favorite cannabis-friendly spots in the OKC metro. There's always tons of seating, and the energy and music always just feel on point. And I haven't even bothered to mention the food, which is a conscious stoner's dream. I'm sure I've mentioned the Doritos-infused chicken before, which can be served up either in a burrito or on nachos, plus they've got vegan and veg options for the non-meat-eaters out there ('cause I know and love my crunch granola stoners. We see you!). It's in the name: there's Good Times to be had here!

What a strange and wonderful time to be an Oklahoman:
3³ - Three Cubed 800 NW 4TH ST, OKLAHOMA CITY, OK 73106, USA
From what I have found, cannabis-smoking lounges are surprisingly almost non-existent in Oklahoma, and especially in the OKC metro. The fact that cannabis has reached the level of legality that it has here and that public smoking is perfectly legal as well, makes me shocked and disappointed that there are only a small handful of public spaces where you can smoke cannabis indoors. I'm severely opposed to requiring membership fees, so you likely won't catch me in Norman anytime soon at what I assume is their only smoking lounge. But like I said when I highlighted them for my column last week, 3³ is a quality, familyowned cannabis lounge, restaurant, and bar that easily has to be the best of its kind in the state. Boasting a gourmet chef, a gorgeous bar, dining area, children's area (furnished with game systems!), a large smoking lounge with a projection screen and TVs, and a nightclub room in progress, this has to be one of the best entertainment hotspots available for Oklahoma cannabis patients. Check them out in the old Rodeo Cinema Club space, and tell them I sent you!

A recent Google review about this lovely arcade bar notes that “I smelled pot at some point but not for long so they either got caught or somebody had just recently smoked prior to coming in.” I hate to disappoint this “Local Guide,” but public cannabis smoking is very legal in Oklahoma, and is not an activity that someone is “caught” doing. This amazing locale features three outdoor patios, all of which you can legally smoke and dab on! Just make sure you keep your smoke outside so you don’t upset Google reviewers and Karens, lest they complain that the aroma of your medicine is ruining their evening out.
Up-Down OKC 1708 N BLACKWELDER AVE, OKLAHOMA CITY, OK 73106, USA
Annoying prohibitionists with a lack of understanding aside though, this is maybe the most fun you’ll have when you medicate out of the house. Fire pits and heaters will keep you warm on their outdoor patios as you imbibe, and then you can head in to enjoy what has to be the best collection of vintage arcade games in OKC. From The Simpsons Arcade to NFL Blitz to even CarnEVIL, they’ve got all of the classics. Plus games rotate on a monthly basis, so if they don’t have your favorite game now you just need to check back. And of course, plenty of pizza by the slice for when you get the munchies. Check ‘em out in The Plaza!

I’ll be honest: I don’t think I’ve been back since they renovated their patio. But it only looks like it’s gotten even better at Hopscotch on May Avenue. A big beer selection (if you’re into that), a menu full of greasy, buttery, cheesy goodness, plus a gorgeous shaded patio with lots of seating. One day we’ll have some live music again when it’s safe, and maybe even those old monthly Jamborees they used to throw featuring spacey, psychedelic jams and local artists showing off their craft. In the meantime, I know for a fact that they’re open for to-go. So I heartily recommend you go and grab some grilled cheese or a French dip, and we’ll all pray for the day that we can all safely go out and headbang to a local band together again.

“IT IS IRRESPONSIBLE NOT TO PROVIDE THE BEST CARE WE CAN AS A MEDICAL COMMUNITY, CARE THAT COULD INVOLVE MARIJUANA. WE HAVE BEEN TERRIBLY AND SYSTEMATICALLY MISLED FOR NEARLY 70 YEARS IN THE UNITED STATES, AND I APOLOGIZE FOR MY OWN ROLE IN THAT.” DR. SANJAY GUPTA, NEUROSURGEON
LA POPROCKZ By Melissa Hall, M.Ed. Back on the familiar hunt, always in pursuit of the most exquisite Cannabis product in Oklahoma. As the snow melts away making room for the new life of the upcoming Spring, new cultivators and even new strains steadily appear on the market daily. In a market with over 6,000 growers, competition is tough and truly the best of the best will stay on top and survive. As some fade away, others are notably recognized for their superior skills in the grow by becoming well-known names and easily recognized brands. One of the brands that come to mind when I think about the best of the best is not only an overachiever in the grow but also an outstanding hash maker as well. Many people may not know that it is Greenleaf Cultivations that is the single source supplier for Craft Kings Concentrates. Not only are the two companies owned by the same duo, but they are also both operated by the same surprisingly small team at Greenleaf Cultivations/ Craft Kings Concentrates. Greenleaf/ Craft Kings may appear to have a corporate backbone with their low key image, amazingly high-quality products, and their sleek, eyecatching marketing with some of the most amazing photos in the State., This could not be farther from reality for these small owned, very hard-working companies. Greenleaf has a simple philosophy, “We want to give patients the best quality medicine we can.” They told The Chronic and they are doing exactly that. They have a motto that really holds true as well. Fire in, Fire out. What they put into the plants and the hash is shown immensely in the quality of both.

Greenleaf/Craft Kings is growing and processing some exceptional strains to accompany their notoriety as well, one of those strains has become very well known and well-loved by Oklahoma patients. LA Poprockz is an Indica dominant strain created by Seed Junky Genetics by crossing Z Animal x Triangle Kush Bx2. But perhaps what makes Greenleaf/Craft Kings LA Poprockz so unique is that they hunted the pheno themselves and they only grow from seed so no one else out there has the exact same LA Poprockz as these guys do. They process their famous Poprockz into hash rosin that is equally as popular and hard to find as its source, the flower. The hash is amazing. I actually tried it before the flower and was amazed. After chatting with Greenleaf Cultivations I was surprised to learn, they are quite new to the hash game. After chatting with Greenleaf Cultivations I was surprised to learn, they are quite new to the hash game.
Greenleaf/Craft Kings was fast to give credit to Country Hash’s Will Darby, for helping them get started in the hash business and for their fast success with solventless concentrates. They were fast learners because the consistency, effects, flavor, and even the bag appeal on the LA Poprockz is simply outstanding, it’s not a surprise it sells out as soon as it hits the shelves. The flower itself is absolutely stunning and has even more stunning effects. These is some of the frostiest flowers I have come across. Deep purple hues are highlighted with violet flashes of color against a faint emerald and exceedingly frosty white canvas. Trichomes overcrowd the spectrum of shades. Fiery orange hairs stand out and add a whimsical touch to the picture-perfect nugs. The impeccably dense buds are symmetrical and consistent giving the Hybrid winning structure. A long, perfect cure tops off the package. The perfect amount of moisture remains in the flower, making it smooth and not harsh. The Poprockz may have the look that the others may only dream about, but she is more than just another pretty face. Remember those intoxicating effects? Well, first the aroma is a bit intoxicating itself. The terps show up with a sweet flavor of blueberries, strawberries, and cranberries, creamy vanilla, and tropical fruity notes come on strong but are quickly overthrown by the gassy and earthy. The oneof-a-kind, deep, dank aroma definitely screams heavy hitter. Indica lovers everywhere will have a new favorite with this one. PHOTO CREDITS TO @THE_MEDICATED_OKIES

The true medical value of this strain is very apparent being great for pain relief, anxiety, insomnia, and many other ailments. The flower and hash are both absolutely outstanding. Greenleaf/Craft Kings' hard work definitely has paid off. If you come across this awesome strain, don’t pass it up. It never lasts long. Thank you so much to the good folks over at Greenleaf Cultivation/ Craft Kings for delivering consistent, quality meds to patients. We can’t wait to see what these guys will be doing next. Remember to always medicate responsibly and Stay Lit Oklahoma.
CANNABIS SURVIVOR By Kayla Johnson
Jennifer Polay is an Oklahoma cannabis patient who has found relief both in the bud and the buddies she’s gained since stepping onto the sticky green path. A native of New York, she attended high school in Massachusetts before moving to Tulsa and says that like many, she had limited experience with the plant before legalization in Oklahoma. “I dabbled a little bit in high school, but my usage became more ‘off and on’ in my adult life, mostly because I didn’t know anyone in Oklahoma to get it from, and my long-time career did random testing, and I didn’t want to get caught.”
Despite the lingering fear, one that’s all too familiar to most, Polay says her opinion has always been in favor of legalizing the plant, though, before medical legalization, she admits she hadn’t even scratched the surface regarding the true benefits of the plant but says that all changed when she was actually able to access the information to go with the plant in person. “I’ve always thought that it should be legal, but until I got my card, I had zero clues about the medicinal qualities of this amazing plant. Everything I know, I learned once I got my card, and was able to actually go into dispensaries and educate myself.” Because of that lack of accessible knowledge beforehand, Polay admits she was quite nervous when she made her first trip to the dispensary and her first purchase. “I felt extremely awkward, I didn’t know what I was doing.” She said. “I was a total newbie. I remember the budtender asking me if I liked Indica or Sativa, and I had no idea what he was talking about. I was lucky enough to have brought a friend with me that was able to help walk me through it, but without her, it would have been difficult to sort out at first.”
48 CHRONIC | MARCH 2021
Over the last few years, cannabis has become a powerful tool for people looking for natural alternatives to chronic pain and a host of other mental and physical ailments. The use of the plant has become more accepted as medical and adult-use legalization spread across the states, and as the number of patients and users continues to rise, the number of people who are being open with their cannabis use has gone up as well. For many, social media and getting involved in groups focused on spreading awareness and information about the real people of cannabis have been as healing as the plant itself.
While she’d had limited experience with cannabis before, Polay found that what she’d once merely dabbled with recreationally helped set her on a new course. “I use cannabis for multiple reasons: depression, anxiety, extreme inflammation, and pain. In the past eight years, I’ve had four surgeries, two on the left shoulder, one on the right during the start of COVID last March, and one on my elbow. I have extreme pain from sciatica as well. Now? In the last surgery I had in March of 2020, I managed my pain entirely with cannabis and didn’t take pharmaceuticals. In January of 2018, I was supposed to have a nerve ablation on my sciatic nerve, and I canceled it because of the relief I found after having my card.” Polay, a big believer in the medical benefits that cannabis has to offer, stressed the importance of the community surrounding cannabis as a piece of the puzzle that helped her find her way forward. “My body is always in pain in some manner. I was in such a deep depression prior to having my card that I could not clean my house. I mentally could not do it. I lived in my room because I did not want to face the mess.” she said,” One day in June, I was at the pool, searching online for a group I belonged to, a cannacommunity. I found my tribe in Flower Power (find them on Facebook), and they saved me. I forced myself to go to functions and meet people. I was so uncomfortable and awkward, but I did it! I’m still proud of that.” Those steps taken at social events to meet other patients helped open the door for Polay to experience one of the best facets of cannabis: the incredible people who make up the cannabis community in Oklahoma, and she credits them wholeheartedly to keep learning and sharing what she knows herself. “This community is the most giving I’ve ever seen, honestly. People just want to help others and to help educate them. It’s incredible, and it’s inspired me personally to just be better at everything I do. I want to inspire others to be their best selves, that’s one of the most important things I’ve learned from this community. Be YOU, and don’t let anyone take that away. That push of positivity is something familiar to anyone who follows her on Instagram (@jenun_ganjapanja).
Her bright and cheerful attitude is reflected in her dedication to helping spread education among Oklahoma cannabis patients, and she’s turned her passion for the plant into a career focused on cannabis and educating others on cannabis products. “I worked parttime in a dispensary, from August 2019 to September of last year, and now, I’m a parttime sales rep for C4 Extracts, they have amazing products!” While Polay is an outspoken and positive advocate for cannabis in Oklahoma, part of what makes her especially open is her willingness to discuss what needs to be addressed. As with many, one of her primary concerns is regarding testing for cannabis goods in the state, and how the medical industry might be impacted by a recreational market. “The testing really, really needs to get under control. Patients should be asking for and looking at testing, and those tests need to be better regulated.” she said,” I also know that recreational is just on the horizon, but I would like the medical portion to stay intact. I’ve seen other places where the flower has really gone downhill, and we don’t need that here.”
CHRONIC | MARCH 2021

For Polay, cannabis has helped her reopen doors that her health had kept shut on her, and given her the chance to help educate people about the plant in a relatable, upbeat way. For first-time patients looking to dip their toes in but are feeling overwhelmed or nervous about trying the wrong thing or too much, Polay’s advice is easy to understand: just relax, and talk to someone. “It doesn’t have to be scary, and what a lot of people don’t understand is that not everyone’s getting high. They smoke to feel less pain. For me, now it’s to not be in so much pain every second of the day, and that’s my ‘why’,” she said. “That would be my first question for them: what do you have to lose? Do you want to help yourself? Then let’s find you why, and move forward from there. I’d also mention terpenes because they’re an amazing, natural extra layer of medication you can discover for yourself.”
