just a few words that come to mind when remembering your first experience at the ballet. The enchanting art form can transport you to another world, evoking an emotional response to the story being told through dance. This powerful experience is exactly what our founder, John E. Kirkpatrick, wanted to bring to Oklahoma City residents when he and Eleanor helped found the Oklahoma City Ballet. In December 1963, under the artistic direction of Yvonne Chouteau and Miguel Terekhov, the young ballet company first performed The Nutcracker for a wide-eyed Oklahoma City audience. Nearly 55 years later, the annual performance has become a holiday tradition for the community. Always looking toward the future, Mr. Kirkpatrick helped the Oklahoma City Ballet establish a permanent endowment at the Oklahoma City Community Foundation. He leveraged his own charitable dollars to encourage others to give to the fund through a series of Kirkpatrick Challenges that offered matching dollars for endowment contributions. As the endowment grew, so did the annual support the Oklahoma City Ballet received from the fund, ensuring the organization could continue to bring the magic and beauty of the ballet to our community. “Mr. and Mrs. Kirkpatrick not only started these endowment funds, they continued to support them and encouraged others
to do so for the next 20 years,” Nancy B. Anthony, Oklahoma City Community Foundation President said. This generous tradition continues today through the Kirkpatrick Family Fund’s endowment matching grant program. Since the first match was offered in 1979, the Kirkpatrick Family Fund has contributed more than $45 million in matching funds to charitable organization endowments at the Community Foundation. In addition, these matches have evoked millions of dollars in donor contributions, as well as resulting investment appreciation. In 2017, the Kirkpatrick Family Fund extended a new challenge to the Oklahoma City Ballet, offering a $150,000 match for $450,000 in contributions to their endowment by Dec. 31, 2018. The match is part of a $2 million gift from the Kirkpatrick Philanthropies to support the Oklahoma City Ballet, its new facility and its dance school that was renamed for Yvonne Chouteau. “The ballet is an organization my grandfather cared for immensely,” said Christian Keesee, Kirkpatrick Family Fund president. “Our hope for this gift is to continue the ballet company’s trajectory as a regional powerhouse with a strong school, which will impact future generations of Oklahomans and our city’s overall cultural landscape.” To make a gift to the match for the Oklahoma City Ballet, or to find other charitable organizations currently participating in a Kirkpatrick Family Fund match, visit occf.org/kffmatch.

UNITING A COMMUNITY There are moments that ignite us, unite us and inspire us. For Fields and Futures founder Tim McLaughlin, that defining moment came in 2012 when he witnessed the decaying fields of Jefferson Middle School. Standing on ground that looked more like pasture than field, he knew he could help. A mere six years later, Fields and Futures has renovated half of Oklahoma City Public Schools’ fields, inspiring the schools, students and communities. “The effect of the fields was evident from the beginning,” McLaughlin said. “If students played, they stayed and if they stayed, they graduated.” Uniting the community through practices and games, schools can connect with students and families in unbelievable ways, but for Fields and Futures, continued inspiration lies in the future. With community support and the help of Kirkpatrick Family Fund matching grants, they continue to grow their endowment at the Oklahoma City Community Foundation to support ongoing field maintenance, uniting and inspiring Oklahoma City students and schools.

ENHANCING EDUCATION FOR AN ADMIRED ALMA MATER Six decades have passed since Pete White roamed the halls of Southeast High School. But the longtime city councilman is still loyal to his alma mater and enjoys celebrating the success of its students. In 2012, Pete helped establish the Southeast High School Alumni Association Support Fund, gifting more than $20,000 to the fund to ensure the teachers and students continue to thrive long after he’s gone. In addition, Pete has supported a variety of funds for charitable organizations at the Oklahoma City Community Foundation for nearly 30 years. He says he discovered long ago that a memorial gift given to charity is like ‘sending flowers that never die.’ Southeast principal Mylissa Hall said the fund provides invaluable support for the Oklahoma City public school. “Pete has never forgotten his roots,” she said. “His support of the fund has helped us power through constraining budget cuts and is a morale booster for our Spartan family!”

INSPIRING A CULTURE OF GIVING A successful entrepreneur, Paul Milburn worked his entire life to fulfill his charitable passions to make a difference. Before his death in 2016, Paul created an estate plan not only to prolong his philanthropic goals, but also to charge others to share in his mission of benevolence. Inspired by Mr. Kirkpatrick’s matching grants, Paul created a fund to benefit nine organizations close to his heart. Before each organization can receive Paul’s allotted distribution, however, they must raise the matching funds. A longtime member of the Shawnee Lions Club, Paul’s matching challenge helped the Lions Meadows of Hope foster care community expand their campus with four newly constructed homes. Now, the focus has shifted to caring for the homes’ inhabitants. “Paul’s matching fund not only allows us to provide the best environment for our foster care youth, it inspires others to do the same,” said Bryan Larison, executive director of Lions Meadows of Hope.

AN ICONIC INVESTMENT FOR PERPETUAL PROGRESSION When Oklahoma City developers began discussing upgrades to the North Canadian River 25 years ago, it’s unlikely they envisioned what exists today. Renamed the Oklahoma River in 2004, what once divided our great city now unites it with an area that provides outdoor recreation options, iconic landmarks, paved trails and calming green spaces that all continue to undergo momentous improvements. Thankfully, our city’s visionaries also prepared to maintain their grand design. In 2005, the Oklahoma City Riverfront Redevelopment Authority created a fund to add self-perpetuating support. With a lofty goal of reaching $1 million, the organization reinvested its annual distributions to grow the fund. In 2017, the fund surpassed that milestone. 2018 CHARITABLE ORGANIZATION ENDOWMENT REVIEW
For years, Lions Meadows of Hope executive director Bryan Larison avoided discussing planned giving options with donors. His unfamiliarity with the details surrounding the giving strategy inspired him to attend our Seeds of Planned Giving series in 2017. Using the knowledge he gained through the seven-part series, he began educating supporters of the foster care community about the availability of tax-wise giving options. In addition, Larison realized that many individuals would love to continue making a difference long after they’re gone. By working together with the Oklahoma City Community Foundation, he helped several donors include gifts for the organization in their wills. “By knowing more about planned giving, we now receive gifts that allow us to serve more foster children than we ever thought possible, said Bryan.
