It is always a joy to present you with the stories of charity our community shares every year. Miriam Beard once said the “results of philanthropy are always beyond calculation.” My friends, no calculation can compare to the overwhelming joy I feel when I hear that a once-struggling charitable organization in our community can continue doing good because of the receipt of a charitable gift. Or that the family of a small child can put food on the table every night because of a nonprofit. The good work that takes place throughout our community doesn’t just happen, though. It takes the hard work of a dedicated charitable organization director. It takes countless volunteers spending countless hours ensuring their favorite charities can carry out a mission. It takes the generosity of Lawton-area residents who are passionate about helping their neighbors and building their community. This annual report is a reminder of how hard our community works to take care of each other. Friends, thank you for your support this year. We wouldn’t be able to do what we do without you.

LAWTON GERONIMO ELGIN FORT SILL CACHE FREDERICK ENDOWMENT GRANTS SCHOLARSHIPS COMMUNITY SERVICES FAMILIES ORGANIZATIONS HOW CAN YOU SUPPORT THE LAWTON COMMUNITY? EDUCATION LITERACY SUPPORT CARE INVESTMENT IMPACT DONOR It’s Easy.

An advised fund is a simple, flexible and tax-efficient way to support your favorite charities – especially with the recent increase in the standard deduction. Under the new tax law, many donors are using advised funds to maximize their charitable deductions by “bundling” charitable gifts for several years into one calendar year to exceed the standard deduction. Donors can then use the advised fund to support their favorite charitable causes over several years. The Lawton Community Foundation has three types of advised funds to choose from, with minimums ranging from $1,000-$20,000. Our advised funds offer low fees, and we provide administrative support to help make charitable giving simple. Advised funds can be established with a gift of cash or other assets such as real estate, stocks and bonds, oil and gas royalty interests or a life insurance policy.

A Gift That Keeps on Giving The Lawton Community Foundation ensures your charitable gifts will be used for good and forever. An outright gift to charity provides a one-time benefit, while a gift to that same charity’s permanent endowment at the Lawton Community Foundation allows the gift to be invested and distributed year after year.

Make the Most of Your IRA Required Minimum Distribution If you are age 70 ½ or older, the IRA Charitable Rollover allows you to make a tax-free gift up to $100,000 to support or create a charitable organization endowment or scholarship fund at the Lawton Community Foundation! A gift from your IRA satisfies your required minimum distribution and saves you money on income taxes and potential penalties.

Planning for the Future By designating a gift through your will or trust, you can maintain your current cash flow and preserve your assets for retirement. Contact us to learn more about the following giving options: - Real estate including homes, acreages or business properties - Appreciated Assets - Oil and Gas Royalty Interests - Life Insurance Policies - Retirement Plans

A HEART THAT CARES Mentioning the name Wendy Bartanen to anyone in the Lawton community will reveal a broad, warm smile. Wendy practiced family medicine in Lawton for many years and was a familiar face throughout the area. A doctor who had a true passion for the health care industry, she volunteered her free time to helping with the health care needs of underserved populations. To serve the Lawton community, Wendy founded Hearts That Care, a free health clinic for Lawton-area residents without health insurance. To ensure the clinic would continue to serve those in need, she established the Hearts That Care Wendy Bartanen Charitable Fund at the Lawton Community Foundation using her retirement assets. “Thanks to Wendy, the Lawton community has a free health care clinic for those who cannot afford a doctor’s visit,” said Daniel Elliott, president of the board for the Hearts That Care clinic. “Thanks to Wendy’s charitable fund, the clinic will receive income every year and Wendy’s generous legacy will live on in this community.”

HELPING FIGHT HUNGER The Lawton Food Bank has been helping fight hunger in southwest Oklahoma for more than 30 years. A partner of the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma, the Lawton Food Bank serves around 1,200 families every month. With no help from federal or state funding, the organization relies fully on donations, grants and fundraisers to continue their efforts. In 2008, the Lawton Food Bank established an endowment with the Lawton Community Foundation and reinvests the annual distributions to help grow the fund. They also apply for community and matching grants every year. “I make use of every funding opportunity available through the Lawton Community Foundation,” said Jeri Mosiman, Lawton Food Bank executive director. “Participating in the grant programs has allowed us to increase our well-stretched funds each year, and ultimately keep more families fed.” What Jeri thinks is most important for the food bank, however, is the trustworthiness that comes with the association. “Being a part of the Lawton Community Foundation gives us credibility,” Jeri said. “Donors can see our affiliations and they know we’ve been vetted – they KNOW we take their donations seriously.”

YOU GO GIRL! Bullying is a growing concern for parents and teachers of school-aged children across the United States. Children who are bullied can experience negative psychological, physical and academic effects and have an increased risk for mental illness. Thankfully, the Girl Scouts of Western Oklahoma are stepping up to stop this destructive behavior. Research by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention found that girls are at higher risk for bullying, low self-esteem and violent situations. Through the Be a Friend First bully-prevention program, the Girl Scouts are helping to create a bully-free environment both inside and outside of the classroom by providing girls with the confidence and skills to develop healthy relationships and conflict resolution strategies. In Fiscal Year 2018, the Lawton Community Foundation awarded a $5,000 grant to the Girl Scouts of Western Oklahoma to educate middle school girls in Lawton Public Schools on unique and girlspecific strategies relating to bullying. “The program is wonderful and the girls were very engaged,” said Christine Stephenson, community program and outreach lead for Girl Scouts of Western Oklahoma. “The schools told us they really saw the impact it had on the girls which is always great to hear!” With the help of a community grant from the Lawton Community Foundation, the Girl Scouts of Western Oklahoma continue to improve the quality of life for some very important Lawton-area residents. 2018 ANNUAL REPORT
