“The only limit to our realization of tomorrow will be our doubts of today.” A letter from the Foundation

Uncertainty was the one word that seemed to haunt a lot of us this past year, and with good reason. We were David Towe Lawton Community dealing with inflation instability, Foundation President COVID-19 and the thought of how the ongoing pandemic would affect the markets. Through it all, we saw robust quarterly returns and ended fiscal year 2021 in much better shape than we had ever anticipated, thanks to our focus on sustainability and the investment policy of the Community Foundation. This was a year where we saw our citizens continue to invest in our community, despite all of the negative news we were presented with on a daily basis. Our future will continue to endure because of the passion and generosity our Lawton-area residents have, as they continue to lift up our neighbors and build a better community. This annual report is a reminder of how much our community comes together to create a lasting impact on Lawton and the surrounding area.

Doing Their Part to End Food Insecurity Cameron University President John McArthur and his wife, Karla Oty, have a passion for ensuring people in their community have enough food on their table. According to President McArthur, “In Lawton, like many cities across Oklahoma, food insecurity is a major problem, especially among young people.” John and Karla donate to the Lawton Food Bank Fund through the Lawton Community Foundation. “The Office of Campus Life for students at Cameron University has a food pantry set up so those who need help getting food on a daily basis are able to do so,” said President McArthur. “The university partners with other organizations in the community to make this happen, including the Lawton Food Bank.” John and Karla also support the Lawton Philharmonic Orchestra. “For a community the size of Lawton, it’s great to have our own orchestra, and it’s another way for us to say thank you,” said President McArthur. The Lawton Community Foundation supports the charitable interests of the Lawton community and surrounding areas through community grants, a scholarship program and a charitable endowment program for local nonprofit organizations.

Growing an Endowment to Grow a Community Lauren Ellis, President and CEO of United Way of Southwest Oklahoma, joined the organization in 2014. She has witnessed far too many people in Lawton facing pressing issues in the areas of education, income stability, health and safety. In 2009, their board of directors established an endowment with the Lawton Community Foundation knowing the dollars invested would grow substantially over time. “Our goal is to grow the endowment so every dollar invested will go towards their operations, and every dollar the United Way raises will go to help the local community.

That’s how much we believe in building our endowment,” said Ellis. The goal of the United Way of Southwest Oklahoma is to raise enough money each year to invest and give back to their 19 partner agencies. The Foundation does a great job telling the story of endowment through meaningful conversations they have with business and civic leaders in the Lawton area. In just two short years, the endowment grew by more than $70,000. United Way’s fund has also received matching dollars all due to the passion of the board’s ongoing commitment to grow the endowment.

Giving Students a Chance to Succeed Lt. Col. (Ret.) Frank Curran, USA, wanted to create an impact in the lives of Lawton-area students, so he established a scholarship fund to ensure students who maintained good grades, but needed financial assistance, could go to college. While serving as president of the Lawton Noon Lions Club, he noticed the fund was not growing the way he thought it should. Together with treasurer Ron Gaines, they combined their efforts and transferred the scholarship fund to the Lawton Community Foundation. They knew working together with the Lawton Community Foundation, they could earn more on their investment as well as take advantage of the organization’s effective administration of the endowment. The fund began by awarding students a $1,000 scholarship per year. Because of the way the endowment has grown over the years, it is now a $2,000 per year award – for four years. Jadance Black was a recipient of the Frank Curran Memorial/Lawton Noon Lions Club Scholarship. “This scholarship allowed me to concentrate on my studies, rather than trying to figure out how I was going to pay for college,” Jadance said. She was overjoyed when she found out she had received the scholarship. She is currently studying cellular and molecular biology at Cameron University and hopes to attend medical school after graduation.

2021 Annual Report

Keeping Our Service Men and Women Connected to the Community The United Service Organization’s mission is to strengthen America’s military service members by keeping them connected to family, home and country throughout their service to the nation. The USO provides programs that connect families and boost morale while making various events and activities available for soldiers across the installation. Their programs provide a connection of care service members have come to rely on, especially when facing deployment and separation from family. According to Executive Director Jennifer Kirby, “The USO here at Fort Sill serves as a home away from home for service men and women.” More than 50,000 service members visit USO Oklahoma each year, and all of the services provided are free. During training, soldiers are confined to the base for 8-10 weeks and are not allowed to leave, so the USO becomes a destination for them, providing access to Wi-Fi, video games, light snacks and beverages.

Troops are encouraged to use the USO for rest and relaxation during their stay at Fort Sill.

This past year, USO Oklahoma was the recipient of a $2,500 community grant from the Lawton Community Foundation to support the Fort Sill USO Center and Outreach Program. The grant was used to replenish the pantry at the facility with snacks for service members and their families who take advantage of the free amenities that are offered. “It may not seem like a big thing, but these soldiers really appreciate the little things we are able to offer. This grant has allowed us to stock up on the needed supplies they have come to appreciate,” said Kirby.
