The Summer Symphony Strings Camp (SSSC) is a weekday commuter day camp that takes place in the heart of downtown OKC at John Rex Elementary School
Who can attend? SSSC is open to students in grades 5 through 8 (in the 20242025 school year) who have been playing for at least one year and can read music . Best of all, NO audition is required!
What do we do each day? Students participate in orchestra rehearsals and have special coaching time with each section, all led by some of the metro area’s best music educators . In addition, we take advantage of our unique downtown location and participate in daily “Arts Experience” field trips .
What makes SSSC different from other string camps? Our camp is a more comprehensive arts camp, giving students the opportunity to experience many styles of music and other art forms in our community . In 2024, campers enjoyed recital hour performances from award-winning fiddle player Kyle Dillingham, Stringsmen OKC (a string quartet specializing in modern and popular music), plus our very own Camp Artistic Director Peter Markes . Daily field trips around downtown, included guided tours of OKCMOA, Paycom Center, backstage of Civic Center Music Hall, and the Oklahoma City Streetcar (hosted by OKC Ward 6 City Councilwoman JoBeth Hamon) .
Under the direction of Camp Artistic Director and 2014 Oklahoma Teacher of the Year, Peter Markes, the week concludes on Friday with a Camp Closing Ceremonies Concert for friends and family .
Mark your calendars for the 2025 Summer Symphony String Camp: June 23-27! Click here to learn more about this fun learning adventure!

We are excited to kick off another incredible season with Oklahoma Youth Orchestras! As Chairman of the Board, I’m thrilled to see the enthusiasm and opportunities awaiting our students this year .
Our organization is led by Artistic Director Jeff Grogan and Executive Director Kris Markes . Their experience and connections throughout the community continue to elevate OKYO and its ensembles Following the success of OYO’s 2023 trip to Carnegie Hall, we’re planning an even bigger adventure in 2025: a tour through Prague, Vienna, and Salzburg This marks an exciting step forward for showcasing our commitment to artistic excellence .
The OKYO Board of Directors is a diverse group of parents, local business leaders, musicians, and alumni, all of whom share a deep connection with OKYO and the broader music community in Oklahoma Together, we volunteer our time, providing expertise in areas like law, finance, artistry, marketing, and fundraising to help further OKYO’s mission
Like others on the board, I’ve had a personal connection with OKYO for many years I played the violin and played in the Edmond North Orchestra . My closest friends and I were part of several ensembles through OKYO . Those days will always be special for us, and we will cherish these lifelong friendships forever .
Being part of OKYO offers foundational experiences for young people, regardless of whether they decide to pursue a career in music professionally . Music brings us all together, united by a shared pursuit of excellence Through our ensembles, students develop leadership, collaboration, self-confidence, and lifelong friendships .
Looking ahead, we’re excited to keep growing OKYO’s programs and its impact in the community . Thank you to everyone who participated in our strategic planning surveys and focus groups — your input helps us improve the experience for our students
We’re very grateful for your support — whether you’ve enrolled your child in an ensemble, attended a concert, or contributed to our Play It Forward campaign As a non-profit, OKYO relies heavily on public support to keep tuition affordable for all students Thanks to recent fundraising efforts, we’ve been able to give our artistic and administrative staff additional resources while keeping tuition increases to a minimum We’re committed to finding new ways to fundraise, including corporate sponsorships, alumni engagement, and future board recruitment
From all of us at OKYO, welcome and enjoy the performances!
Sincerely,
Joe Rodano OKYO Board Chair
Robert Glenn Rapp Foundation
Please join us in expressing our sincere gratitude for designating support to our Special Scholarship Program, providing funds for students demonstrating need . EDMOND
Dear Friends,
It is my pleasure to invite you to celebrate Oklahoma Youth Orchestras’ 47th season of remarkable music-making . We’re thrilled to welcome back returning students and families, as well as greet many new faces! This season has already surpassed our expectations, and we are excited to share the incredible achievements of our young musicians with you
Oklahoma Youth Orchestras continues to thrive as a vibrant and impactful arts organization, enriching the lives of young musicians from across Oklahoma’s diverse communities . We’re proud to continue our signature programs this season, including Side-by-Side rehearsals with the OKCPHIL, the annual Concerto Competition, our partnership with OCU’s Project 21 and the OKYO Composer-in-Residence program, and the Winter Guest Conductor Clinics This season also introduces exciting new initiatives, including expanded Community Engagement performances, a joint concert with the Oklahoma City Symphonic Band, and a thrilling European tour, which has sparked several communitybuilding fundraising events
Guided by our distinguished conductors and coaches, our talented students are creating magical musical moments each week, and through teamwork, creativity, and leadership we are fostering a lasting love of music and artistic growth . None of this would be possible without the dedication of our Board of Directors, staff, families, and the generous support of our community . As Oklahoma’s largest youth orchestra, we are deeply grateful to those who make our work possible through individual gifts, corporate sponsorships, and foundation support .
It is my honor to present a season filled with opportunities for growth and inspiring performances Thank you for supporting OKYO and our outstanding young muSicians!
With gratitude,
Kris Markes Executive Director

SUSAN YOUNGHANS
Conductor, Dallas String Ensemble and the Sinfoniette Chamber Orchestra
Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra Program
Susan Younghans is currently in her nineteenth season conducting the Dallas String Ensemble and the Sinfonietta Chamber Orchestra within the Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra program, where she works with exceptional musicians from Grades 8 to 12.
Originally from Buffalo, NY, Susan is recognized as an accomplished teacher, conductor, and performer in the Dallas area. She earned her Bachelor of Music in Violin Performance from the State University of New York at Fredonia, studying under Charles Joseph, and a Master of Music Education with a violin major and a concentration in piano from the University of North Texas. There, she continued her studies with Mary Nan Mailman, Philip Lewis, and James Lerch.
Susan has contributed to the field through her article on “practice” published in the ASTA journal for string educators. She established the string orchestra program in Lewisville ISD in 1993, directing middle and high school strings for seven years with a focus on program building.
As part of her outreach through the GDYO program, Susan is now in her seventh year assisting in the Dallas ISD and Irving ISD, mentoring teachers and students. She also maintains a private teaching studio, where her students have achieved success in numerous local and state contests. Susan is in demand as an adjudicator and clinician, guiding many students toward careers in music performance and education. In addition to teaching, she regularly performs with regional professional orchestras, string quartets, and freelance ensembles. At SMU, she instructs courses in string techniques and string pedagogy and supervises student teachers and interns as they begin their careers.
Instilling a love of music in the next generation remains Susan’s greatest joy.
Deborah Perkins, Ph. D. is known for her love of teaching diverse musical styles and her ability to have fun by creating an encouraging atmosphere where students are challenged, yet achieve mastery of musical skills that defy the age level of the students playing. She received her BME degree from State University College at Potsdam, NY; MME degree from the University of South Carolina; and a Ph. D. from the University of North Texas. Also known for building programs, Dr. Perkins built and rebuilt public school orchestra programs in Florida, South Carolina, and Texas. In the fall of 2003, she cofounded CTYO’s Elementary Strings which directly led to the orchestra programs in McKinney and Lovejoy ISDs. She has served in leadership positions in professional organizations of SCMEA, FOA, TexASTA, ASTA and TMEA and served a two year term of “Member at Large” on the national ASTA board.
She is the co-founder of the internationally traveling Texas Youth Orchestra & Choir who has travelled to Italy, Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary, the UK, Spain and France, Amsterdam, Holland and Germany and Austria. A hallmark of her teaching is how to make music that expresses and touches the heart of the students and audience alike. Her dissertation focused on the motivation of students to be enrolled in orchestra and she is fondly called by her friends the Pied-Piper of Strings. In 2018, Dr. Perkins retired from teaching string pedagogy and string techniques at SMU where she worked since 1999. Dr. P maintains an active schedule as a clinician, adjudicator and private cello lesson instructor. She is married to Steve Perkins, and they have one daughter, Kayla.

Each season, Oklahoma Youth Orchestras presents the annual Concerto Competition, known as the Louise Francelia Waldorf Prize for Excellence in Solo Performance. Sponsored by longtime OKYO supporter, Dr . Lin-Lin Liu, the competition’s name was changed to honor her former teacher . “Miss Waldorf was my violin teacher when I was a member of OYO . At the time, Chickasha Public Schools did not have a strings program and she worked very hard to make sure I could play in an orchestra . I have fond memories of her accompanying me on her harpsichord . She was a remarkable lady,” says Dr . Liu .
This year’s winner is cellist Julia Ungvari who is a senior at Casady School . She will perform as a soloist with the Oklahoma Youth Orchestras during their Sunday, February 2, 2025 concert
This year, our OYO ensemble will have the opportunity to participate in a SideBy-Side rehearsal with their professional counterparts . OYO will collaborate with the Oklahoma City Philharmonic and our students will sit next to their instrumental counterparts and learn directly from them . Without the support from our collaborative partners, these exciting experiences would not be possible . Thank you to the Oklahoma City Philharmonic!
Oklahoma Youth Orchestras is delighted to continue the Composer-InResidence Program with Oklahoma City University. This unique partnership is designed to promote creative collaboration between musicians of OKYO ensembles and composition majors in the Bass School of Music at OCU.
Each year, one OKYO ensemble is selected to participate in the program which connects students with a living composer and allows them to experience the collaborative environment where they participate in workshops with the composer and work directly to create a composition.
This season our Composer-In-Residence is Hamed Erfani who is currently advancing his studies with a master’s degree in music composition at Oklahoma City University. OYW will present his final composition in the Spring during our Season Finale Concert.

Oklahoma Youth Philharmonic (OYP) is a full orchestra ensemble consisting of mostly high school students in string, wind, brass, and percussion sections . Repertoire includes many standard masterworks, expertly arranged educational compositions, as well as many original compositions, contemporary works, and popular music straight from the movies .
In 2018, OYP performed as an Honor Ensemble at the Oklahoma Music Educators Association annual in-service . OYP has also participated in an exchange program with the Youth Symphonies of Kansas City
To better serve student needs, OYP begins each season as a strings-only orchestra . This allows woodwinds and brass students to finish their busy marching band seasons and allows OYP to focus on string technique and ensemble
Dr. Charlene Dell Conductor, Oklahoma
“OYP members have learned to become independent musicians, making our rehearsal time much more productive. Their ability to listen and adjust their playing to match their colleagues has helped OYP improve each week.”

Founded in 2004, Oklahoma Youth Winds (OYW) is made up of talented high school wind and percussion students . This challenging honor wind ensemble provides experience in musical preparation and performance that students can take to their own high school band programs and exposes students to literature that they may not play in their school programs
OYW has been invited to perform as an Honor Ensemble at the Oklahoma Music Educators Association annual in-service three times since 2013
“How do we spell OYW?
O is for “OPPORTUNITY” where students have a great setting to interact musically with other students from all over the OKC Metro and to learn about music from experts in the field.
Y is for “WHY SHOULD YOU JOIN?” Our setting is familiar but different than what most students experience in their school music programs. We cover different repertoire and provide musical training from some of the finest music teachers in the state.
W is for “WOULD YOU FIT IN?” The answer is YES!
Not only are all of our students friendly, but also everyone joins at their own musical skill levels and everyone is able to grow and have fun. Our diversity of personnel is one of the things that sets us apart!”
Watch for the student roster in the February 25, 2025 Winter Concert program .
See pages 22-23 for the full season concert schedule .
Percussionists in OKYO generally play in up to three full ensembles: OYO, OYP, and OYW; as well as independently as the OKYO Percussion Ensemble . Percussion ensemble gives students the opportunity to work on techniques and repertoire that focuses on building well rounded musicians . We strive to develop musicality through chamber music and explore the skills needed to be a modern percussionist .
In the world of orchestras, percussionists stand out as the versatile maestros, bringing life to a single piece of music by skillfully shifting between a multitude of instruments .
Members of the Percussion Ensemble work to hone their skills on an impressive array of instruments:
TIMPANI
XYLOPHONE
CYMBALS
TRIANGLE
SNARE DRUM
BASS DRUM
TAMBOURINE
MARACAS
GONG
