Presidential Article

As I watched a rerun of “Mash” last night, it really hit me how we all get caught up in the latest technology that will soon be outdated. Now don’t get me wrong, I am among the first to oooh and ahh over the latest advances in cameras, stereo and even cell phones. But where do all these advancements take us? Let’s go back to the Mash episode. It seems that someone was grateful to the “4077 Mash Unit” doctors for saving his life after being injured in Korea. When he returned to the States he bought a new kind of camera and sent it to the doctors. The camera turned out to be the latest in technology as it required special film that developed itself. Of course the camera is what we know as the Polaroid. All the people at the Mash unit were so excited because it was the latest greatest and thought this would be the end of traditional cameras and everyone could now be great photographers. We are well into the latest advancements in cameras and the digital age and just like the people from Mash, we are taken by the latest. But just like the Polaroid, even my 5D MKII will be outdated soon, if not already. So what’s my point? The point is that none of the Mash people were really photographers and having the latest equipment didn’t make them photographers, and at best it was only a step in that direction for the ones that mastered the use of the Polaroid. As stated by many others before me, we as Professional Photographers need to remember that the equipment is only a tool to use to achieve the final results. What we really need to focus on are things that are constant in good photography. That would be good lighting, posing, composition, marketing and of course understanding the use of ISO, f-stops and shutter speeds as they relate to each other. Just as with the Mash Unit and the Polaroid Camera, the technology of today will change but the fundamentals of photography remain constant. We have an awesome line-up of talent for the Spring Seminar to help you with all these things. Check out the Spring Seminar page and get registered, and a reminder; Lake Murray State Lodge is holding our rooms till the end of Feb. Get your reservations in.

See you at Lake Murray

Wayne Reese, M.Photog.,Cr, President 2010. SPRING SEMINAR FEATURED SPEAKERS SanaAntisdel began her artistic career as a self-taught painter, working with watercolor and oil from her home while her children were young. Then she expanded into photography more than 15 years ago, creating a business centered around high school seniors, families and children.

Kia Antisdel Bondurant began working with her mom, Sana Antisdel, combining her education and language degrees with the photographic skills imparted by her mother.

"IN THEIR WORLD"

Sana Antisdel and daughter, Kia Antisdel Bondurant, have a passion for the high school senior portrait

experience. Their relevant style and innovative ideas have earned them national recognition.

Each year, Kia and Sana develop backgrounds that complement the new clothing trends, portrait products that increase their overall sales as well as shooting and prepping concepts that set their senior portraits apart. They will share these brand new ideas as well as how to market and sell to today’s high school senior “In Their World”. Learn Antisdel's techniques and philosophy on making every high school senior they photograph look beautiful and, most importantly, feel beautiful. As working women who value family above all else, Sana and Kia will give you their techniques on balancing the drive to be creative and the demands of running a business with family and personal time.

Lissa Hatcher M.Photog.

Growing up around artistic people who could paint and draw, I was the odd one out. Which may be why I had every intention of becoming a music major. Luckily, photography found me. Completely self taught, I have somehow managed to find a way to express myself with photography in a way I never thought possible. I feel more like a painter who happens to own a camera. I can honestly call myself a baby in the field turning three this year. I have been blessed to win award after award in my short time, including "Hottest New Talent" (American Photo), PPO Magazine Cover, Photographer of the Year for the state of Oklahoma two years in a row and have even been featured on www.Kodak.com.

RandyTaylor, M.Photog., Cr.,CPP, F-PPO, Edmond, OK wins Kodak Elite Award for "Wrath of Time"

Image by Chasity Rozell Kathy Toppins The Edmond Sun EDMOND — With his photograph, “Wrath of Time,” Randy Taylor of Taylor Made Photography won second place in an international competition sponsored by the Eastman Kodak Company. He accepted the award Jan. 11 at the Professional Photographers of America annual conference and trade show in Nashville, Tenn., attended by about 12,000 photographers.

“I’ve competed for 25 years, and winning an Elite Award is one of those things you only dream of,” Taylor said.

His photograph of a Mormon Row homestead won multiple awards on its way to the international competition. At the PPA Southwestern Region Conference, the photograph scored a perfect 100. In all the competitions he has attended, Taylor said, he has seen only two other photographs score 100.

Taylor shot the winning photograph around 6 a.m. at the end of May 2008 while teaching a landscape photography class. Mormon Row, he said, is a popular photography subject at the southern end of Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming.

Most photographers shoot a Mormon Row barn with the Grand Tetons as a backdrop. For “Wrath of Time,” Taylor shot away from the mountains.

“It has a very timeless quality,” Taylor said of the photograph and why he chose to enter it into competition. When I looked at it the first time, I really didn’t consider it that much. I liked it, but it wasn’t one I really felt would be outstanding. ”

While cropping and refining, Taylor discovered the more he simplified the photograph, the stronger it became. Then, while competing at the state level, Taylor noticed the photograph drew a lot of attention from judges who encouraged him to work on it a little more.

Taylor listens to the judges and others who critique his photographs. He knows his emotional involvement in the photograph can cloud his ability to see what others see. When he looks at “Wrath of Time,” Taylor said, he can remember how the grass smelled, what the sounds were and how cold it was that morning.

“Photography takes a really thin slice of time and freezes it for you,” Taylor said. A photograph is a note to his memory.

“This is not 100 percent exactly like I saw it,” Taylor said of “Wrath of Time.” “This is a piece of artwork. Everything today can be enhanced.” As a former art teacher, he welcomes the opportunity to combine his artistic and photographic backgrounds.

For his winning photograph, Taylor softened, lightened, darkened and added shadows — not repainting, but retouching. The original photograph, he said, was whiter and didn’t have the definition Taylor wanted. The original also had some distractions that Taylor removed.

He polished the photo before it went to what he calls “the real show.” And, at the end of the show, his photo was among the four Elite Awards, giving Taylor another coveted pin for the ribbons all professional photographers wear at competitions.

In Mastering the Light, John will explore lighting in the studio and in the field. He will build a working studio and through live demonstration illustrate the strengths of portrait, glamour and modified glamour lighting forms. This year the class will be designed as a “master” class for those who have previously taken John’s class or for those with solid experience in studio photography. “How To Succeed In the Photography Business,” with Kent Shirley and Ted Newlin. Stayin' Alive by Clem Wehner

What keeps an organization alive? New members. What attracts new members? Current members. What makes members continue their membership? The organization has something they want, they consider the cost acceptable, and the other members are friendly and welcoming. Organizations serve members only if they stay vibrant and growing. Look around your guilds and state organization. Are there enough new faces to ensure a bright future? If not, it’s up to you to help. We all know photographers who are not involved with our guilds or PPO, many of them full-time photographers. In their minds, what we offer is not worth the cost in time or money. People are highly motivated by “what’s in it for them?”. We have a lot to offer, but prospective members need to know about it, and current members must do the marketing. We can build it, but if they don’t know about it, they won’t come. Once we get someone in our doors, they need to have a good experience. Attending the first meeting is intimidating—like your first day in a new school. All of us need to actively watch for new faces and deliberately involve them in conversations and activities. It’s all too easy to cluster around old friends and forget the newcomers are there. We can build it, but if they come and don’t like it, they won’t come back. Even if they join, continued membership is delicate and easily lost. About half our members are not full-time photographers, have other jobs, don’t have studios, can’t take Mondays off, and are struggling to make ends meet. They often must pay dues and fees out of their family budget, not out of their business. They do photography on the side because it offers promise of a better future or fulfillment of a dream. To keep members coming back, our activities must consider them as much as longer-term members. Never forget that these fledgling part-time photographers are the future officers, board and committee members, competition entrants, masters, speakers, judges, and members who will keep PPO alive. Think of our organization as a business. Members are our customers. Do they like coming to our business, do they have fun, do they feel welcome and special, do they feel what they get is worth the cost, and will they keep coming back? Each of us, regardless of our role in PPO, needs to apply our business skills to growing our organization. Treat potential members like potential customers, and existing members like existing customers. Do this and PPO will live long and prosper. Page 18
