CANTERBURY

The School is at the heart of the city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with much of the School nestled around the Green Court, within the Precincts of Canterbury cathedral. This creates a beautiful and tranquil working environment, within a small but bustling city, which is also home to two universities. The River Stour runs through the heart of the city, with boat tours giving a chance to see some of the city’s hidden gems. There is also a busy high street, plus gorgeous medieval lanes, and a good range of shops, plenty of places to eat, 2 cinemas and a city theatre that sees performances ranging from Shakespeare’s The King & I and Matthew Bourne’s Sleeping Beauty to stand up comedy and critically acclaimed musicals. If the history in the city is not enough, there are plenty of castles to visit nearby. There is beautiful countryside all around the city with plenty of pretty villages nearby, as well as Blean Woods where wild bison now roam. The coastline is an easy journey away by car or train, with a variety of sandy beaches, cliffs and long coastal walks. The M25 and M20 are easily accessible making Gatwick and Heathrow within reasonable driving distance, and there is the high-speed train link into London, getting you to St Pancras in just under an hour. For those wanting the continent, Dover and Folkstone are just a short car journey away.

The Role

We are seeking to appoint a well-qualified candidate with a good degree in History or a related subject to lead the department to further success. The Head of History at King’s is responsible for all aspects of History teaching across the school. They will be an inspiring teacher who is capable of leading a talented and diverse department and teaching across the range of year groups from Year 9 to A level and Oxbridge entrance standard. As a member of the Eton Group of HMC schools and the EKST partnership, they will liaise with colleagues at other schools to foster and develop initiatives for excellence.

The role does not require previous experience as a Head of Department but does require the skills of teaching expertise, leadership & decision-making, administrative accuracy and excellent organisational skills, all combined with empathy, patience and humour.

We are looking for an individual who is capable of truly interactive teaching and who can create an atmosphere of mutual respect in the classroom. Pupils at King’s have the ability to engage with challenging material and as a result ask demanding questions so the successful applicant needs to be able to stretch and challenge pupils appropriately. It is important that the Head of History is someone who is able to convey a strong belief in a subject worthy of study for its own sake and will therefore have a demonstrable passion for History and be committed to promoting history as an academic subject.

There are, additionally, many opportunities for further involvement in the wider pastoral and cocurricular life of this large boarding school. All teachers at King’s take on a tutor group in one of the boarding or day houses and contribute to the co-curricular programme.

HISTORY AT KING’S

This is a leading department at King’s with a good track record of success at teaching a broad range of pupils. There are eight teachers in the department which, along with Politics, is based in a medieval building close to the cathedral with six recently refurbished and well-equipped teaching rooms and a small additional seminar room.

All pupils in the Shell year (Year 9) study History for two periods per week. Course content is based on the First World War in the first term and in the next two terms the theme is how people have campaigned for equal rights, including women’s campaign for the vote in Britain, Martin Luther King and the Civil Rights Movement in the USA and the anti-Apartheid movement in South Africa. The subject is currently chosen by about 90 pupils each year for the IGCSE course (Edexcel) and there are five or six classes in each year group in the Remove and Fifth Form years (Years 10 and 11). The Edexcel IGCSE programme includes the study of Germany from 1918 to 1945, the Cold War 1943 to 1972, Russia 1914 to 1924, and China c.1900-1989. About 70% of candidates gain grades 7-9 at IGCSE.

At A Level there are usually three sets in both the 6b (Lower Sixth, Year 12) and 6a (Upper Sixth, Year 13). In recent years around three-quarters of candidates have achieved grades in the range A* to B. The department follows the AQA A Level History specification. There are two separate strands:

In order to lead the department successfully the Head of History ideally needs to have the potential and enthusiasm to take on any period of History and so teach any element of these A level strands.

To encourage further interest in the subject there is an established programme of lectures, a variety of day and residential visits (with a recent sixth form trip to Auschwitz), history society activities at both junior and senior level and a history magazine with articles written by pupils and staff which is published annually. Teaching makes use of excellent libraries within the school and there is a chance to access the Cathedral archives and library. The department also shares in the lecture programme of the Canterbury Branch of the Historical Association.

There is the opportunity to teach A level Government & Politics but this is not essential; there is often overlap of teachers between the two departments.
