THE INTERNATIONAL COLLEGE STUDENT HANDBOOK 2018-2019

The King’s School, Canterbury International College The International College is a new addition to the historic King’s School family. It will be situated in a state of the art building located on the Malthouse site, near the King’s Recreation Centre and Birley’s Playing Fields. It is approximately ten minutes’ walk from the main King’s School site. The International College can house up to 80 students, both girls and boys, from Year 7 to Year 11. The first term, Autumn 2018, there will be a maximum of 25 students housed on the main School site for one term only. Our pioneer students will move to the College in January 2019, where they may be joined by more classmates for Lent and Summer terms, 2019. Whilst on the main School site, students will share a Common Room on the ground floor, equipped with television and kitchen facilities. A welcome area and computer room will also be available on this floor. Boys will be based on the first floor and girls on the second floor. Both floors have brand new shower and toilet facilities. A telephone is available on the girls’ floor. The boys may use the telephone available in the Tutor’s office with permission. Students will share the Main Dining Hall with the King’s pupils for breakfast, lunch and supper, although some breakfasts may take place in-house. Prep will be completed between 7.30 pm and 9 pm in the Social Centre, a two-minute walk from the accommodation and very comfortable. An Art studio and Science laboratory are located in the basement of the accommodation for Art and Science lessons. Other lessons, including English, Humanities and Mathematics will take place at Beerling Hall, 8 minutes’ walk away.

College Philosophy Our aim is to anchor a 21st-century education within the illustrious history of the oldest school in the United Kingdom, dating from 597AD. The late Lord Pilkington, one of our most distinguished headmasters, described a King’s education as resting on the simultaneous pursuit of academic and co-curricular excellence. King’s possesses the knack of developing individual passions that often become lifelong pursuits: sporting, musical, and artistic opportunities abound for every pupil. Internationalism is at the centre of our educational philosophy. We embrace diversity and have a desire to foster fairness, tolerance, courage, perseverance and mutual respect. Our expectations of students are straightforward: be kind and work hard. Adhering to these fundamental principles will ensure that each student will get the most out of their time at the College, by forming meaningful friendships with other students, progressing well in their studies, particularly their English fluency, and by contributing wholeheartedly to College life and co-curricular activities. By being kind and working hard, our students will develop the character traits that will allow them to embark on the next stage of their academic lives confidently. We shall expect our students to engage fully with what we have to offer. In turn, we shall be aiming to ensure that all our students leave the College not only ready to enter a mainstream English-speaking curriculum, but feeling that they have been challenged and excited by the experience.

The Joint Principals Mr and Mrs Bill and Jo Prior 30 April 2018 Dear Parents and Guardians, Arrangements for the start of term for new International College students It is with pleasure that we look forward to welcoming you and your child to the International College and King’s in September. We are currently working on the Student Handbook, which we will send you shortly. It will include a timetable of the first few days at the College. Meantime, you may find it useful to have some information about the first day, as well as other points of interest. First Day After you arrive on Monday 10 September between 9.30 am and 12.30 pm, there will be a reception and briefing for new pupils, parents, guardians, and agents, in the College courtyard at 12.30 pm. This will provide you with the opportunity to meet Mrs Suzanne Kuster, Deputy Housemistress, and Mrs Bridget Goodge, Resident Matron, as well as other College tutors and staff. A lunch will then be provided for all in the Malthouse Performing Arts Centre at 1.15 pm. If you have questions on any College matter, we will be happy to help please approach Mrs Kuster, Mrs Goodge, or either of us, on the day. Your child will need to change into College uniform for the start of term at 3 pm if she/he has not arrived in uniform, ready for briefings to discuss games, music, and the activities programme, as well as College life generally. You will need to say goodbye just before this. Clothing We request that all clothes are clearly labelled and that any garments purchased after the start of term are submitted for marking before being used. Spare name tags are very useful, and we recommend that students bring a ready supply at the beginning of term. Valuables Please dissuade your child from bringing too many clothes or possessions to the College. Very expensive items, such as elaborate watches and jewellery should be left at home. Medical Matters Please advise Mrs Goodge of all medication being taken by students; she keeps all medicines and needs to know about all allergies (penicillin, antibiotics, hay fever, asthma etc) and health problems. Please feel free to contact her at any point during the term. The College takes no responsibility for the consequences of any student being in possession of, or taking, medication or health products that are not prescribed or not authorised by the School Medical Officer. Guardians You must arrange an adult friend, or relative, or someone specialising in guardianship, as a Guardian for your child. Details of this person must be made known to the College.

We look forward to the College having a reputation as being a happy and busy place and that your child fully enjoys her/his time with us. Any contact with parents is welcome, and please do come along to as many College and School functions as you can. We look forward to meeting you on Monday 10 September. Yours sincerely,

Bill and Jo Prior

USEFUL INFORMATION Exeats and Sunday At the College we have lessons every Saturday. In addition, we have short terms. For these reasons, students are expected to spend their weekends in the College. Once per half term, they may, if they choose, visit their guardian or a friend’s house for an overnight stay. They may depart the College after they have fulfilled their commitments on a Saturday, and they should return by 8pm on Sunday. Permission for all weekends out should be sought by parents or guardians by email to Mrs Prior at least one week in advance. If students wish to spend a weekend at a friend’s house, both the hosting family and the student’s parents must confirm the arrangement by email. Uniform As far as possible, students should have all the items from the Uniform Checklists. Any plain style winter coat may be worn, either very dark navy or preferably black and large enough to accommodate a blazer underneath. Fur trimmings are not allowed. Please ensure EVERY item is named with either name tape or by permanent laundry marker pen. Students should arrive on their first day in uniform. Casual clothes are necessary for half days and Sundays. Storage Suitcases rather than large trunks are preferably because these are easier to manoeuvre around the College and to store. Trunks, however, can of course be accommodated. The College will store all trunks and suitcases. Laundry Laundry will be arranged by the Matron and completed off-site. Students are encouraged to take their dirty laundry regularly to the allocated laundry room. It is essential that every item is named, including underwear. An alternative is to buy some mesh laundry bags and name these, rather than every item. Bedding will be provided and laundered by the College. Pocket Money The average amount of pocket money is usually £5 per week. Pocket money must be deposited with the Joint Principals because students will have minimal time to visit the bank. Money can be withdrawn from the College bank on a weekly basis. The Joint Principals can take cash or a cheque can be made payable to The King’s School. Students should not be in possession of more than £20 in cash in the College at any time.

Tuck and College Meals Attendance at breakfast, lunch and supper meals in the Main Dining Hall is compulsory, as this will ensure students eat three healthy meals a day. Should students wish to consume a small snack after prep in the evening, they may prepare this in the Common Room after prep. A fridge is available. From Monday to Friday, students may not order takeaway food. Fruit will be available in the College. College Rules and Regulations Parents and students are encouraged to read the College Rules and Regulations document before they arrive in September to avoid possible confusion. This can be found on the College website and on the Parent Portal.

Introduce yourself and your parents and/or guardian to Mrs Goodge, Matron, who will be available all day. Her office is on the ground floor, next to the Common Room. Please give her your medical forms, if not already sent in and check any medical or uniform problems with her as necessary.

Carry your trunk or suitcase to your bedroom. You may start unpacking in you wish, but you will have time to do that later, if you prefer. Please use the wardrobe and cabinet nearest to your bed.
