A Vision for Sport at Junior King's

A Vision for Sport Sport for all, all year round

Welcome Sport is vital to the health and happiness of children and it has long been central to the curriculum at Junior King's. Whilst the roster of sporting achievement is long and consistent at JKS, sport is not just about competition; it is about taking part and having fun. There is nowhere that children have more fun than in the water. The archive photographs in this brochure bring back my memory of swimming in the original pool that was ďŹ lled with water from the river Stour ďŹ fty years ago. There really were eels in it so you didn't put your feet down! It was perishingly cold even in the summer but everyone jumped in with squeals of delight and terror in equal measure. Just as the new Music School has encouraged the musical ambition of our children and sta, this substantial upgrade to the swimming facility will stimulate greater participation and achievement by all of our children. I am delighted that we are now pressing ahead with this long-anticipated project.

Turning a Vision into Reality

We have seen great developments in our sports facilities over the past few years at Junior King’s. The Robertson’s Astro Pitch and Tennis Courts, the Jubilee Field and the resurfaced small Astro Hockey Pitch, have all added greatly to the quality of our sport. However, there is more to be done and one very obvious area requiring improvement is our outdoor swimming pool, which can only be used for a few months each year. Exciting plans have now been drawn up for the enclosure and refurbishment of the Junior King’s pool, making it an attractive indoor facility with adjacent changing rooms and a visitors’ reception area. A dance and fencing studio will be added in the Sports Hall as a further phase, thus enabling our facilities to be used more extensively throughout the year. We have embarked upon an ambitious fundraising initiative with strong backing from the Governors as well as our parent body. A significant proportion of the funds has already been raised. This brochure outlines how, with your generous support, we can turn this vision into a reality.

Joining our vision

Thanks to several generous benefactors, we are nearly half way to reaching the target for Phase 1 of the project. We are now inviting friends, parents, alumni, foundations and other supporters of Junior King’s to help us raise the remaining funds. We want to equip the new building with the best possible standard of equipment and naming opportunities are available for those who want to make a specific gift. On behalf of pupils at Junior King’s today and in decades to come, thank you for supporting our vision for sport at Junior King’s.
