BURSAR’S ELECTRONIC BULLETIN June 2019

It has certainly been a very busy term and as we head towards the end of it I have no doubt that you are looking forward to some time off and for some of you your holidays. Preparations for King’s Week are well under way and I appreciate the hard work that goes on behind the scenes in readiness and which continues on throughout; a big thank you to all those involved, I for one, love the atmosphere around the School during this time but it is not lost on me just how hard everyone is still working. Can I remind you all that I will be doing my normal Support Staff briefing at King’s on 4th September in the Shirley Hall at 10:00 and again at Junior King’s on 6th September in the main dining hall at 10:30. The briefing will include a short update on Child Protection. Please note that from 12:00 midday on Thursday 27th June to Thursday 4th July inclusive there will be NO PARKING from the Headmasters visitors’ spaces up to Marlowe House. The reason for this is twofold, firstly to allow additional access around Green Court, and secondly there will be a large number of students cycling and in the past due to the restricted space on the Bursary side the odd one has unfortunately caused damage to a vehicle. In addition, please note there is NO PARKING ANYWHERE, (including minibuses), in Green Court from 15:00 to 17:30 on Tuesday 2nd July to allow for the Green Court Finals. Finally as in previous years a reminder that on School Commemoration Day, Thursday 4th July, there will be NO PARKING (this includes minibuses) ANYWHERE in the Green Court area and there will be limited access to Green Court from 09.30 to 17:00. In the meantime enjoy the rest of the term and hopefully some downtime and I look forward to working with you all again next term. Mark Taylor Bursar Thank you for all your help in supporting the King’s staff and members of the Rec Centre for the Folkestone 10k in aid of the Support Staff Charity, Royal Marsden Cancer Charity . Olivia Wilson, Suzanne Jenkins, Kate Batty, Cathy Hills, Simon Whyte, Ronnie Clements, Diana Parker, Jenny Prentice and Aneela Ayub Rahman ,all completed the 10k with the sun shining and wind against them on the their way. They started by the sea and ran to Hythe and back with some Hi 5 ‘s on the way . They would all like to thank Mandy and her team, with their partners, for supporting them on the day.

Commemoration of Benefactors will be held on Thursday 4th July in the Cathedral and the Preacher will be The Very Rev’d Catherine Ogle. There are additional tickets to offer to support staff who would like to go to the Service. If you have already asked for a seat and now unable to attend please return the ticket .

The last lunch at King’s School will be Friday 5th July at St Augustine’s at 12 midday only, commencing again on Monday 2nd September in the main dining hall. At Junior King’s the last lunch will be on Wednesday 3rd July commencing again on Monday 2nd September. The Chums Social Centre at King’s will be open to Support Staff from Monday 15th to Friday 19th July, a great place to buy your lunch and relax with colleagues. Please let Andy or Chris know before the end of term, what choices you would like to see in Chums, for instance, sandwiches, wraps, paninis etc. They would love to hear from you. They will also be selling breakfast muffins and baguettes from 8:30am

Support from HMRC For many working parents, childcare costs can play a large role when planning a return to work, or considering their career options and working hours. Now that childcare vouchers have closed to new entrants, we are reminding employees that help is at hand with Tax-Free Childcare, a government scheme to help working parents with the cost of childcare. Eligible parents could get up to £2,000 per child, per year, to spend on qualifying childcare. For parents with 2 children, that could mean a saving of £4,000 on the family budget. For more information go to - www.childcarechoices.gov.uk

Working with colleagues on Fire Safety at our school, I have been struck by the peoples' stories: how quickly a fire can develop, how situations can descend into chaos when procedures are either non-existent or have not been practiced. I'd like to encourage you to: - not allow combustibles to build up (have a 'spring clean', go electronic with files); - make sure you are familiar with all fire escape routes in your building; - organise / actively participate in Fire Drills. Our Fire Safety Policy is found in the King’s School Policies and Procedures folder.

As you enjoy the good weather remember Barbeque Safety. Esther Marsh

Know your limits in the heat if you are you working outside? 

Below are a few important tips the School would like you to take a few moments to read in order to make sure you are protecting yourself fully during periods of extended hot weather. If you’re outside in hot weather for most of the day you’ll need to make an effort to drink

Please make sure you know where your nearest drinking water filling point is. Eat healthy foods to help keep you energised and avoid drinking liquids in the heat that contain large amounts of sugar. Make sure you are resting in shaded areas during your allotted break times so that your body's thermostat will have a chance to recover. It is important that you stop working and contact your line manager should you experience breathlessness or severe muscle soreness a rapid pulse or sustained dizziness

SUN CREAM, use Plenty of high factor applications HAT, wear at all times DRINK, plenty of fluid at regular intervals

A team of support staff including, Dan Rogers, Jez Hadlow, Clare Reed, Natalie Collins, Gemella Evans and led by Adam Vintner, (Housemaster of School House) and Stewart Hayes, (Head of Chemistry), are going to attempt the 3 Peaks Challenge in July. The challenge is to climb the highest Mountains in Scotland, England and Wales within a 24hr time frame. They will start climbing Ben Nevis at approximately 2pm on Thursday 11th July and hopefully reach the summit of Snowdon 24hrs later, having climbed Scafell Pike in-between! They will be supported by Martin Franks and Ross Webb. The purpose of this ambitious attempt is to raise funds for this year’s Support Staff Charity, the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity. The Royal Marsden gave great care to one of our colleagues, Emily HaywardHasan, during her long battle with cancer, which sadly was lost last year. Emily was first diagnosed with cancer at the age of 11 and sadly passed away at the very young age of 24. During her fight Emily took the time to record much of her journey and her blogs have become quite famous, acting as a real support mechanism to many facing similar fights. Should you wish to support them in their efforts, please see link below. https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/3peaksks-c
