Welcome from the Head Welcome to Speech Day 2019, and a very special one it is too, as we celebrate our 90th anniversary on our beautiful site in Sturry, and our 140th anniversary of being the Junior School of the King’s School, Canterbury. We reach the end of another busy year at Junior King’s with plenty to celebrate in today’s speeches and prize giving. We are delighted that the Dean is with us and honoured that we have Michael Morpurgo as our Guest of Honour. We were very proud to be awarded the Arts Council Arts Mark Gold level earlier this year for our outstanding work in the arts, both with the community and in school. Both Junior King’s and The King’s School have always had a special relationship with creativity, and it has been an important focus across both schools this year. King’s Week, in which Junior King’s now enjoys an integral place, is just a part of the year-round blossoming of creative energy. In our Prep School, we embed creativity activities in all we do, and across all curricular subjects. Our Year 8 leavers this year have been an outstanding group and we wish them all the very best as they move to take up their places at their respective senior schools this September. For some of our children their journey through Junior King’s began in Nursery and the Pre-Prep. The Year 8 pupils leave Junior King’s as happy, fulfilled, confident children with resilience and respect. I am proud of every single one of them. Our school is child-centred and all of our children have something special about them. Our guiding principle is to help them to achieve their best. There have been so many different achievements throughout this year, in academic subjects, sports, music, drama, art and design technology, which we have celebrated on a weekly basis. Our prize giving today only touches on the

most outstanding highlights of the year. I would like to congratulate all of our pupils for their personal achievements and successes. I am grateful to all the staff for their hard work and support, and to the Friends of Junior King’s for helping to build our wonderful community. The magnificent 1920s Ball demonstrated their dedication and enthusiastic support of the school. Thank you for being with us today.

The School Song - “Here at Junior King’s” (WHISPERED) The sound of distant footsteps … echo from the past … Every step, a beating clock … becomes louder than the last … Whether faint, loud … or yet to come - each step plays its part - Every stride, fall, … leap … is echoed in our heart. Hands down, heads up, start running and you’ll leave the ground, Aim high, start now, sit back and let me tell you how: This school isn’t built out of simple stone, this school wasn’t built by anyone alone, It’s time you rubbed your eyes to see - this school is so much more than you or me. We’re joining in the chorus, The voice that always sings, Acer non effrenus, Here at Junior King’s. Standing on the shoulders, Of those who’ve gone before, Through friendship and wisdom, We all can do much more. If you’re given, when you’re growing, generosity and care, then you’re giving, and you’re sowing, the same everywhere, since our Lady Milner gave her house to share, her kindness and love is still there. Joining in the chorus ... If you’re looking for the answer, and you don’t know what to do, be patient, take a chance, be sure to see it through, Lord Milner believed in what we all can do, his trust lives within me and you. Joining in the chorus ... So be humble and be willing, everyday of your life, if you stumble, be forgiving, wherever the strife, set the example for King’s to live on, let your voice be part of the song! Joining in the chorus ... Joining in the chorus ... at Jun’r King’s! Composed by Tim Finnis
