SCHOLARSHIPS & AWARDS


Academic King’s Scholarships were established by Henry VIII in 1541 under the Statutes of Canterbury Cathedral. King’s Scholars are members of the Canterbury Cathedral Foundation. Up to twenty King’s Scholarships and Exhibitions are awarded as a result of examinations held early in the Summer term. The assessments are wide-ranging and provide opportunities to excel in a variety of areas. Candidates are expected to demonstrate a sharp, enquiring mind supported by a love of learning together with the ability and desire to engage in independent research.


Art

Sport

Assessment Day is held in the Lent term.

The practical examination involves Objective Drawing and Imaginative Composition.

Candidates will undertake a skills and leadership test followed by participation in two chosen sports.

Candidates are also encouraged to submit recent pieces of their work.

Candidates are expected to demonstrate excellent sporting ability and good sportsmanship.




Drama

Design & Technology

Assessment Day is held in the Lent term.

A practical workshop is followed by the performance of a two minute monologue.

A practical design task is followed by an interview.

Candidates are expected to hold the ambition to be involved in all aspects of school drama.

Candidates will also submit a portfolio of work which they should be prepared to discuss.


Music Up to twelve Music Scholarships, which include free tuition in two instruments, are awarded each year along with a number of Choral Exhibitions. Assessment Day is held in the Lent term with the emphasis on potential as well as current achievement. Candidates will present two contrasting pieces on the first choice study instrument. They will also undertake sight reading and ear tests. There is no written paper.
