Utvikfjellet in Gloppen municipality is one of the most popular excursion areas in Sogn og Fjordane county, adapted to cater for all age groups by volunteers around Breimsbygda Ski Centre. In addition to the alpine facility, the volunteers maintain a network of trails to Fløtravarden and Snøfjellet, among other places. If you'd like to try longer day trips on your own, Myklebustbreen and Ceciliekruna are popular destinations. However, a winter's day of powdery snow and blue skies is something to be treasured. That's because the only thing that's certain about winter in Western Norway is that nothing is certain. Tranquil, sparkling days can suddenly transform into grey weeks of pouring rain. Three mountains in Nordfjord The trip from Utvikfjellet to Snøfjellet offers a magnificent view of Innvik. This is the heart of Skogstad Sport AS. From Skogstad's headquarters in Innvik, three prominent mountain summits can be seen to the south: Fløtravarden, Snøfjellet and Dunheia. These three summits may be found in the company logo and they symbolise Skogstad's local identity. The village of Innvik, the Nordfjord region and the county of Sogn og Fjordane have always been important to the development of the Skogstad group. The company started in Innvik 76 years ago and it is from here that the whole operation continues to be run. In this dramatic, beautiful nature, the company's clothing range is developed. A buzzing outdoor life One winter, many faces. For children, no two days outside are ever the same. The clothes they wear need to be capable of withstanding everything from severe cold to soaking wet days. One day they're tobogganing in glittering snow, another day they're skating in mild weather. Trips into the forest, trips along trails, trips just for the fun of it. It can be a challenge to dress children properly for all the adventures that form part of a long autumn and winter. Here are some tips to ensure that the youngest can enjoy themselves while outside: • Remember that over 50% of heat loss from the body is through the head and neck. A hat and scarf are essential! If a child is cold in other parts of its body, headgear can still help. Apart from the head, heat loss is greatest from the hands, feet and crotch area. • Children are unable to withstand the cold as much as adults, and don't always let you know when they are cold. Keep an eye on them and ask them how they are on a frequent basis. Check the child if you are in any doubt. • Dress children in several layers of clothing instead of just one thick layer. Air between layers of clothing insulates and it is easier to regulate the temperature with several layers. • Wool as an innermost layer against the body is the most optimum solution. Then a middle layer of, for example,

a fleece sweater or jacket. For the outer layer there are several options, depending on the weather: Snowsuit, technical jacket/trousers, down jacket, padded and lined trousers/jacket, etc. Refer to the back of the catalogue! • It's a good idea to take along an extra woollen sweater or fleece for additional warmth. Also remember to take an extra pair of socks and gloves if it's wet. • Water conducts heat three times more easily than air. It is therefore important to remain dry in order to keep from freezing. • It's a smart idea to use tights without feet. If the child's feet get wet, you won't need to change the tights, only the socks. • Windproof garments, preferably with a hood, should always accompany you on a trip. These are often the best type of outer garments for skiing, as the underlying garments can provide the warmth. • Outer garments should be properly impregnated. Seeking out the best descents Few regions in Norway can boast mountain wilds like the northernmost part of Western Norway. The stretch of country from Sogn to SunnmĂ¸re is an endless range of amazing descents. Three hours up, fifteen minutes down. This is the typical summit tour. There are no short cuts to the high mountain powder â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the few minutes of free skiing require you to first embark on the long and arduous ascent. No lift, no trail, no warming hut. This is a winter activity for those who are able to withstand physical and mental stress. Nevertheless, summit trips are more popular than ever before. Increasingly more people are discovering that the benefits far outweigh the drawbacks. Summit trips are an extremely good form of exercise. They provide a powerful insight into unspoilt nature, 'far from the madding

crowd'. This type of skiing can be enjoyed right up to the early part of summer. And the main purpose of the trip itself: Skiers get to experience the most unique kind of skiing. For the skiing enthusiasts of Svedje and Fjell the search for the best descents is part of what gives a sense of purpose to the winter season. This is a group of outdoor enthusiasts, with a base in Nordfjord, who know the mountains in the region better than most. During both summer and winter they move around vertically in order to explore new mountain regions. >>>

“I suppose we could be regarded as a group of enthusiasts with a higher than average interest in nature experiences. You could say that we are heavily involved in nature,” says Rune Holen, one of the driving forces of the group. Rune and the others in Svedje and Fjell acknowledge that summit tours have become fashionable and welcome people to the winter mountains. However, they feel it is crucial to acquire knowledge of the nature you intend to pass through. “Summit tours can be very dangerous if you are poorly prepared. Before setting out on a trip into the mountains, you should make sure that you have the proper equipment, knowledge of the area you are entering and sufficient skills regarding snow conditions and avalanche risk. If you are well prepared, the mountains in Nordfjord are a wonderful place for summit trips,” says Rune Holen.

Thought out to the smallest detail When the day's outing heads into a rain-heavy and cold Oldedalen, its success will depend on the children and adults staying dry and warm. Skogstad's rainwear and technical clothing has been made to withstand the wettest days. Most garments have a water column of 8000 mm, which will keep water and wind out (fabrics that can withstand a water pressure of more than 3000 mm are regarded as waterproof). Taped seams, YKK zippers, functional design, as well as excellent breathability in the fabric that transports moisture away from the body are other characteristics of clothing that forms the basis of a successful day out.
