The Hoven mountain soars 1,010 metres above Lobukta at the innermost point of the Innvikfjord. The side facing towards Loen town centre is steep and unwelcoming to ordinary hikers. However, a new attraction from Loen Active now makes it possible to conquer the mountain from the front, even for those who have no previous experience of mountain climbing. Mountain climbing enthusiasts from Loen Active have constructed a Via Ferrata to the summit. 'Via Ferrata' is Italian and means 'iron road'. Further south in Europe this is a popular form of climbing, with around 1,000 routes in the Alps â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the majority of them in Italy and Austria. In most locations, experienced guides will accompany the less experienced climbers along routes they would otherwise have not been able to negotiate. The routes have been secured with cables and the more difficult sections will often include climbing irons, bridges or steps fixed to the rock face.

On two wheels through the forest Some follow dull asphalt roads through Denmark, while others challenge their leg muscles in the French mountains. But all you really need for a cycling trip is a winding forest road.

A detour off the main road, and you're cycling into nature. Along dirt roads, through an ever-changing forest landscape. Follow the road all the way to the farm on the hill, if you can manage all the hills. Find the perfect spot to pitch your tent, with a view of the fjord way down below. No matter who long the trip is, it is smart to remember the following: Clothing We suggest you don’t take baggy clothing as this may be uncomfortable to cycle in. Check the width of your trouser legs to make sure they don’t get caught in the gears. Ideally, secure them with bicycle clips or ski straps. Packing You can cycle while wearing a rucksack if you like. However, on longer trips it may be preferable to invest in a couple of panniers or a rack trunk. This will achieve a lower centre of gravity on the bike. If you'd like to combine a cycling trip with a one day hike, rear panniers and a small rucksack could be a good solution. Smaller children should cycle with either a small load or no load at all as children's bikes are often quite heavy. A trailer bike may be suitable for children from 5 to 8 years of age. Necessary equipment Accidents can always occur out in nature and a trip can be ruined if you don't have the necessary equipment. You must therefore remember to pack: • extra inner tube and tyre lever to remove the tyre • repair kit • bicycle pump • adjustable spanners/screwdrivers to tighten mudguards and racks Bon voyage! 25

"This river is extremely underrated. The Jølstra River is one of the best rafting rivers in Norway. It is also very accessible and is situated in exceptionally beautiful surroundings." The positive adjectives roll comfortably off Per Tysse's tongue. He has been a rafting guide for 15 years and knows the best rivers in Norway. Voss, Sjoa and Numedalslågen are often regarded as the finest rafting destinations. According to Per, Jølstra is right up there amongst the best. "I came here many years ago to try the river. Even after just one trip I was hooked." Per has been here ever since. He works for Jølster Rafting, which has its base in Vassenden at the southern end of Lake Jølstravatnet. From May until October, the company's experienced guides escort adrenalin-hungry enthusiasts along stretches of the Jølstra and Stardalselva rivers. One of the guides is Shingirayi Kumonyera, who trained in rafting between the cliffs and along the wild stretches of the legendary Zambezi River. "The Zambezi is extreme compared to Norwegian rivers. But do you know what the greatest problem with rafting on the Zambezi is? Hippos and crocodiles. You don't have those types of dangers in Jølstra – it's the cold that's the greatest challenge for me," laughs Shingirayi. After a wild and wet journey along the best stretches Sunnfjord has to offer, the rafters are taken back to base. Here they have the opportunity to unwind in a steaming bath tub at the edge of Lake Jølstravatnet, before enjoying a barbecue in the lavvo nearby. You might be lucky enough to find both Western Norwegian and African cuisine on the menu.

The fjord â&#x20AC;&#x201C; in two acts There are at least two ways to conquer the Innvikfjord: a strong wind in the hair or a fine breeze in the sails. Briksdal Adventure can organise both options from its base on the edge of the fjord in Olden. Both RIBs and sailing boats are available for trips on the fjord. A RIB rafting trip (RIB = rigid-inflatable boat) is basically a 'speed-date with the fjord', a cruise that lets you enjoy the pure pleasure of speed. Those who prefer a more sedate pace can try a trip on a sailing boat. Gliding across the waves, with moderate engine power, waiting for the wind to carry you along the fjord on a westerly course.

In the forest with Skogstad In Western Norway, the summer is whimsical and taciturn. A trip in the forest might just as easily be about heavy rain and mud as cosy trails and calm ponds. Thus, a thermos flask is always a good hiking companion during the summer season, and after hours spent in natureâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s climbing frame, a cocoa break can be the high point of the day. Here's the recipe: 4 tbs sugar 5 tbs cocoa powder (or 300 grams dark chocolate in pieces) 1 tbs vanilla sugar 1 l full-cream milk or semi-skimmed milk Mix the cocoa, sugar, vanilla sugar and a small amount of the milk in a saucepan. Heat the mix, stirring constantly.Â Blend in the remaining milk. Whisk until the cocoa has reached boiling point. Pour into a thermos flask. Take a cannister of ready-to-use whipped cream with you.
