Getting better with age KITCHENER-WATERLOO OKTOBERFEST The origins of Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest begin with the festivities of a wedding in Bavaria now celebrating its 200th anniversary!

n a far away land known as Bavaria, King Ludwig I married the beautiful princess Therese Von Sachesen-Hildenburghausen. The loyal soldiers in the Prince’s National Guard thought horse races would be a most fitting way to celebrate this joyous occasion. These races were the finale of five days of wedding festivities on October 17, 1810. This was the beginning of Oktoberfest. The horse races became an annual event and were combined with the state agricultural fair the following year. A few years later booths would be set up for patrons to enjoy food and drink at the festival. In the late 1800s, the booths had grown into large beer halls or tents, which are still set up each year on the Theresienwiese (Therese’s Fields) in honour of Ludwig’s bride. Today, a large mid-way and fair accompany Oktoberfest in Munich, the largest celebration of its kind in the world. The festival extends over two weeks and ends on the first Sunday of October. Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest was not established by royal decree, but with a noble motive just the same. In 1969, the founding fathers of Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest saw this Bavarian tradition, celebrated in Bingeman Park in Kitchener, as an excellent opportunity to benefit the entire community.

Since 1969, Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest has developed its own traditions, becoming the largest Bavarian festival in North America with the greatest Thanksgiving Day Parade in Canada. The civic festival that celebrates our local German Canadian heritage has grown from a weekend event in one Festhalle into a nine-day event attracting over 700,000 people. In the Spirit of Gemütlichkeit on Friday, October 8 at 11:30 am Kitchener Civic Square will be bustling with pomp and ceremony, music and dancing, and the enthusiasm of thousands of revelers eager to kick-off the 2010 Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest. Honoured guests and dignitaries at the official Opening Ceremony will accompany our President, Paul Buttinger, the newly crowned Miss Oktoberfest and our favourite ambassador Onkel Hans. This year Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest is bigger and better than ever with over 40 Family and Cultural Events and 18 festhallen. There is something for everyone at Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest! Celebrate Thanksgiving weekend with your friends and family by taking part in the many Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest events happening around town. Don’t know where to start? This simple guide provides some suggestions to help plan your weekend!

Friday, October 8:

• Start the weekend early by attending the official Opening Ceremonies & Keg Tapping at Kitchener City Hall, 11:15 a.m. • Then pay a visit to Hans Haus, your information headquarters at the corner of Benton and Charles Streets. You can find details on scheduled events, buy festhallen tickets and pick up some KitchenerWaterloo Oktoberfest souvenirs!

Saturday, October 9:

• Early Saturday morning enjoy a free breakfast at the K-W Oktoberfest Free Family Breakfast in UpTown Waterloo. Then drop by the Great Oktoberfest Barrel Race on King Street in Waterloo. Roll out the barrel at 9:30 a.m. • Visit the Erntefest - Harvest Festival at Joseph Schneider Haus Museum, Kitchener’s oldest Mennonite homestead, as they celebrate the harvest or “Ernte” by performing household duties such as schnitzing, preserving, and pickling as they were done in the 1850's. • Come to Downtown Kitchener to check out the Oktoberfest Downtown Experience! There is something Wunderbar for all members of the family to enjoy!

Sunday, October 10:

• Head downtown to Willkommen Platz, the heart of Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest, to enjoy some festive cuisine and free entertainment! • Cheer on Kitchener’s best talent at the Oktoberfest Idol and Junior Idol competition at the Conrad Centre for the Performing Arts starting at 10 am.

Monday, October 11:

• Rise and Shine! It’s time to secure your spot on the parade route! The Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest Thanksgiving Day Parade starts at 8:30 am at King and Erb Street in Waterloo and makes its way to King and Cedar Street in Kitchener. Reserve bleacher seating at King & Allen Street – Tickets are $8 and available at Hans Haus. • After the parade, visit Woodside’s National Historic Site of Canada for their Traditional Thanksgiving, where you’ll be sure to get a taste of the harvest season. • Get a birds-eye view of Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest with a Great Lakes Helicopter Ride at the Waterloo Regional International Airport. Photo Contest CONESTOGA COLLEGE

very year, Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest holds a photo contest for first-year students enrolled in the Conestoga College Graphic Design program. During the Festival, the students visit various KitchenerWaterloo Oktoberfest events and capture them on film. At the end of the school year, they present their 10 best photos and are judged on their presentation, selection and quality. The top three winners each receive a Hans Haus Gift Certificate. Onkel Hans W

ho is that big, lovable orange guy you’ve seen around the festival? Onkel Hans is the Official Mascot of Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest and our Goodwill Ambassador. As the mascot, you will see his smiling face on buttons, pins, t-shirts, brochures, steins and other souvenirs! Created in 1974, Onkel Hans has come to symbolize the spirit of the Festival, with his jolly disposition and a warm smile for everyone he meets. During Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest, Onkel Hans is sure to make an appearance at each of the festhallen and the many Family & Cultural Events in the region. He even appears ‘larger than life’ in the Annual Oktoberfest Thanksgiving Day Parade. He keeps busy throughout the remainder of the year, visiting special events to spread happiness and cheer. As a representative of the Kitchener-Waterloo community, Onkel Hans has attended the Calgary Stampede, the Molson Indy,

German Pioneers Day

leven years ago, the Ontario government instituted German Pioneers Day to recognize the achievements of German pioneers in shaping Ontario’s development. This year, the German Pioneers Day event will take place on October 12 at 5:00 pm in the rotunda of the Kitchener City Hall. For over 200 years German immigrants found their way to Waterloo County. A big portion of the population in Kitchener and the surrounding municipalities are of German descent. They left difficult circumstances behind to build a new life in Canada for themselves and their children. They found strength and comfort in the practice of their cultural traditions, and applied their work ethic, skills, and enterprise to develop Waterloo County and Ontario. Thus they helped shape the character of our region as a confident, tolerant, and multicultural community with all its wonderful diversity and agricultural resources and riches. This year, the German Pioneers Day committee is recognizing the Schoerg and Betzner families, who were

Over the last 15 years over 1.1 million lbs of food have been collected at the Oktoberfest Thanksgiving Day Parade! Get Your Tracht On – What to wear at Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest They are impossible to miss – those handsome men in long, woolen stockings and leather shorts held up by sturdy suspenders with intricate pewter fastenings, and sporting hats with feathery plumes. Or the fair maidens in their low–cut gathered white blouses with flowing skirts topped with colourful aprons. Whether they are twirling around the Festhallen floors, or serving you pints of frosty beer, during Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest these delightful outfits, based on authentic German costumes, become the height of fashion. The Tracht you will see throughout Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest, like most costumes, has dozens of variations and styles. The most commonly recognized attire includes the dirndl; a closefitting bodice combined with an apron in a different colour, for women, and lederhosen; shorts made from leather and wool, for men. Although the traditional clothing is often costly, it is easy to ‘get your tracht on’ for a smaller budget! Grab an Oktoberfest hat, adorned with colourful feather plumes, or an Oktoberfest t-shirt sporting phrases like “I fear no beer at Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest”. For a few dollars more, add a glass shooter around your neck, or a funny chicken hat – great for all the dancing you will be doing at the festhallen celebrations! Of course, no matter what style or outfit you choose, the final must-have to ‘get your tracht on’ this year is the commemorative pin. These pins are just one of the many traditions of Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest. Collect them or trade them because the more you have – the more you want!

RIDE With Us! Here’s to Responsible Choices! Good times, good friends, and good cheer!

Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest is proud to host the Free-Ride program. For the 25th year, Molson, in conjunction with Grand River Transit, the Regional Municipality of Waterloo and our participating Festhallen, will provide free bus rides on both festival weekends in the Kitchener-Waterloo area. It’s a safe, convenient way for you to get home after a night of partying. Bus schedule information is available from the Festhallen.

If you plan to drive, take part in the Pepsi Designated Driver Program, available at most Festhallen. Simply register when you arrive, then enjoy drinking free Pepsi during your stay. Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest is also continuing the tradition of safety by providing financial support to the Waterloo Regional Police for their RIDE program. It is part of our commitment to make sure all of our guests get home safely. An estimated 8,000 drivers, who successfully pass through a RIDE checkpoint during the Festival will receive a booklet jam-packed with gift vouchers and discount coupons provided by our many sponsors. You will also be eligible to win valuable prizes in a draw held at the end of the Festival. Lorraine Cress

Lorraine Cress joined Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest in 1985, starting with the Coin Committee, acting as its Chair from 1999 until 2003 when the committee disbanded. Her commitment to the Festival did not end there however, and Lorraine was transferred to the Lottery Committee and still serves that worthy community program today. Lorraine has also served on the Advisory Council, as Vice-Chair of the Volunteer Committee (2007), and on the Board of Directors from 1999 – 2003. Her wonderful dedication and experience made Lorraine an excellent candidate to take the helm of the Buttons Committee in 2008. When not working on the Festival, Lorraine is in financial planning with ScotiaBank. Over the last 24 years, Lorraine’s positive attitude and constant willingness to help and guide are what make Lorraine an excellent resource for other volunteers and a tremendous asset to the Festival.

Paul Hauck

For the past 22 years, Paul Hauck has been rolling up his sleeves as a member of the Parade Committee; annually producing the largest Thanksgiving Day Parade in Canada! Since first joining the Parade Marshaling subcommittee in 1986, Paul has proven to be a dedicated volunteer and is considered a real ‘work-horse’ by his fellow committee members. Paul has served in almost all aspects of the Parade, both as a volunteer and as a coordinator, including Marshaling, Float Construction & Float Maintenance, Parade Warehouse and the Parade Executive, on which Paul has served as Vice-Chair since 2005. When he’s not thinking about the Parade, Paul is helping out with the Volunteer Golf Tournament. When

he’s not building floats Paul works for Maple Leaf Foods (Schneiders). A quiet and friendly person, Paul is known to be found anywhere and everywhere when it comes to the Parade and Volunteer Golf Tournament.

Jane Jantzi

Since first joining the festival in 1996, Jane Jantzi has been instrumental in the growth of the A Blooming Affair Fashion Show into the successful event it is today. From 1996 to 2007 Jane was a vibrant and enthusiastic member of the committee, particularly in the years she served as Committee Chair (2001-2004). Jane always ensured all the volunteers had clear objectives and led the committee with both strategy and action, and Jane remains the number one best ticket seller for that event! Jane also served the overall Festival as a member of the Board of Directors (2001-2004), the Advisory Council (20042006) and the Community Advisory Council (20072009). Jane is a Senior Manager of Business Development at Deloitte. She is a respected leader, a consummate professional, and is admired and looked-upto by her fellow volunteers.

From legend to legacy

KITCHENER-WATERLOO OKTOBERFEST The legend of King Ludwig’s wedding to Princess Therese is well known as the origin of the Oktoberfest tradition. Stories of horse races, country fairs and beer halls have given way to a modern interpretation with barrel races, rock concerts and festhallen.

ust like the legend that turned into a modern-day reality, so has Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest gone through a four-decade transformation from a small community event, hosted by the Lions Club, into a nationally recognized festival. Where today there is a cast of thousands, at its inception on October 14, 1969 at Bingemans there were only a handful of dedicated Oktoberfest organizers, among them Richard Hermansen, Owen Lackenbauer and Darwin Clay. With a banner over King Street, posters here and there, and as much media coverage as could be mustered, the keg was tapped and history had been made. "We got the enthusiastic support of the German clubs and a tourism official from Munich, Germany. All we had was $200 and a vote of confidence from the Chamber to get it going. It was a phenomenal success,” recalled Lackenbauer. The success translated into 75,000 visitors enjoying 57,000 gallons of Bavarian-hopped Oktoberfest beer brewed for the occasion and washing down over 50,000 pounds of sausages, along with pigtails, sauerkraut and other German and Waterloo County fare. Those early years reveal the significant evolution the festival has experienced, but one that has been true to the founders’ intentions for Canada’s Greatest Bavarian Festival. According to long-time volunteer Jack Bishop, what has stayed constant is the tremendous amount of money that goes back into the community. "Service clubs have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars each year since the beginning, and turn around and give it to various organizations in the community.
