4. ALICE’S ADVENTURES UNDER GROUND BEING A FACSIMILE OF THE ORIGINAL MS. Carroll, Lewis. Published by London: Macmillan (1886) Alice’s Adventures Under Ground Being a Facsimile Of The Original Ms. Book Afterwards Developed Into “Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland”., 1886. Pp. viii [4 ll.] 95 [-96 with Christmas Greetings] [2 ll. including 2 pages of ads]. Original gilt-stamped red cloth with original firstissue black endpapers, expert and sympathetic repairs to the spine and inner joints, light edge wear, else very good. Introductory title and dedication leaves hand colored, chapter headings and a few other illustrations hand colored, oval albumen photographic portrait of Alice Liddell pasted at end along with small autograph note “happy summer days THE END” folded over last leaf. On verso of half-title is the following inscription, To Mr. Nichol Schattenstein with the compliments of Eldridge R. Johnson in memory of a very fine portrait that took several summer days Camden N.J. U.S.A. 1932. A most interesting association copy, specially prepared for the recipient. Eldridge Johnson, founder of Victor Talking Machine Company and avid collector of books and art, bought from A.S.W. Rosenbach the manuscript of Alice in 1928. Nikol Schattenstein, a Russian painter who moved to the US in 1920, painted portraits almost exclusively, and Rosenbach hosted numerous exhibitions of his work from at least the mid-1920s to mid1930s, publishing catalogues of them regularly. Rosenbach himself commissioned his own portrait from Schattenstein, which now is displayed in the Rosenbach Museum & Library. I expect that Rosenbach introduced Johnson to Schattenstein, and Johnson and his wife had their portraits painted by him in 1932; they are illustrated in an exhibit catalogue published by Rosenbach in 1934. In the meantime, Johnson had decided to reprint this 1886 facsimile of the Alice manuscript, and had it collotyped by Max Jaffe in Vienna in 1936, issuing it in a finely bound limited edition. It also appears Johnson had bought the remaining unbound sheets of this 1886 facsimile and had them bound to give away to friends, perhaps having it reprinted in Vienna once he exhausted that supply. This copy, however, is from the original 1886 issue (with black coated endpapers) and has been extra-illustrated by Johnson for presentation to Schattenstein. $3,200.00 USD E.C. Rare Books

No. 16 of 175 of the Edition de Luxe printed on Japon Vellum paper, Bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, with 11 handcolored plates, 51 other black and white plates. xxxiv + 196 pp. Morland was late eighteenth century artist revered especially for his treatment of pre-Industrial Age rural life, often of human subjects of modest means, and of animals, sometimes as the primary subject of his work but more often as part of the genre scene including people. His work came to be treasured for its nostalgic quality, as his subjects are typically of contented farmers, squires, lasses, maidens and wives at play or work, and it can seem that Morland was prescient in anticipating that this would soon be so. Henry John 4 uniform volumes, with 523, 589, 431, & 560 pages respectively, portrait frontispiece in volume 1 and 2 plates in volume 4. Apart from occasional foxing which is more pronounced on the title page and frontice of vol. I. This is a beautiful, clean tight set with no previous repairs. Milton is best known for Paradise Lost, widely regarded as the greatest epic poem in English. Together with Paradise Regained and Samson Agonistes, it confirms Milton’s reputation as one of the greatest English poets. In his prose works Milton advocated the abolition of the Church of England and the execution of Charles I. From the beginning of the English Civil Wars in 1642 too long after the restoration of Charles II as king in 1660, he espoused in all his works a political philosophy that opposed tyranny and state-sanctioned religion. His influence extended not only through the civil wars and interregnum but also to the American and French revolutions. In his works on theology, he valued liberty of conscience, the paramount importance of Scripture as a guide in matters of faith, and religious toleration toward dissidents. As a civil servant, Milton became the voice of the English Commonwealth after 1649 through his handling of its international correspondence and his defense of the government against polemical attacks from abroad. During his early years, Milton may have heard sermons by the poet John Donne, dean of St. Paul’s Cathedral, which was within view of his school. Educated in Latin and Greek there, Milton in due course acquired proficiency in other languages, especially Italian, in which he composed some sonnets and which he spoke as proficiently as a native Italian, according to the testimony of Florentines whom he befriended during his travel abroad in 1638–39. $480.00 USD

16. AREOPAGITICA: A Speech Of Mr. John Milton For The Liberty Of Unlicenc'd Printing To The Parliament Of England 8vo. limp vellum. 73, (3) pages. Limited to 300 copies (Tidcombe DP12). Quotation from Euripides in Greek with English translation on title. According to on-line notes prepared by Dartmouth College, the quote is from The Supplicants, 43740. Milton was responding to the Licensing Order of 1643, which had reinstated pre-publication censorship once exercised by the English Star Chamber court. Milton opposed such prepublication censorship. This is true Liberty when free born men Having to advise the public may speak free, Which he who can, and will, deserv's high praise, Who neither can nor will, may hold his peace; What can be juster in a State then this? Eurip. Hicetid. Areopagitica was published originally 23 November 1644 at the height of the English Civil War. It is titled after Areopagitikos (Greek: Ἀρεοπαγιτικός), a speech written by Athenian orator Isocrates in the 5th century BC. (The Areopagus is a hill in Athens, the site of real and legendary tribunals, and was the name of a council whose power Isocrates hoped to restore.) Like Isocrates, Milton had no intention of delivering his speech orally. Instead, it was distributed via pamphlet, defying the same publication censorship which he argued against.

As a Protestant, Milton had supported the Presbyterians in Parliament but, in this work, he argued forcefully against Parliament's 1643 Ordinance for the Regulating of Printing, also known as the Licensing Order of 1643, in which Parliament required authors to have a license approved by the government before their work could be published. Before presenting his argument, Milton defends the very idea of writing a treatise such as Areopagitica. He compliments England for having overcome the tyranny of Charles I and the prelates, but his purpose is to voice his grievances. Milton defends this purpose, holding that to bring forth complaints before the Parliament is a matter of civil liberty and loyalty, because constructive criticism is better than false flattery. He concludes his introduction by encouraging Parliament to obey "the voice of reason" and to be "willing to repeal any Act" for the sake of truth and upright judgment. $2,150.00 USD

With a frontispiece, pictorial title-page, twenty-five full-page illustrations, numerous half-page illustrations, head and tailpieces and initial letters all by Robert Anning Bell. Publisher's yapedged vellum, front cover pictorially stamped in gilt, spine decoratively stamped and lettered in gilt, pictorial end-papers printed in green, top edge gilt, others uncut, four silk ties replaced. A near fine copy housed in a custom made Slip Case. Robert Anning BELL, R.A., R.W.S. (18631933) was educated at University College School in London. At the age of fifteen he was articled for two years to an architect uncle before studying at the Royal Academy Schools, the Westminster School of Art (under Fred Brown), in Paris (under Aimé Morot) and, later, in Italy. On his return from Paris, he shared a studio with portrait sculptor George Frampton and together they developed a line in hand-colored plaster reliefs, in imitation of Della Robbia. His early architectural training and his close friendship with architects and sculptors made him the ideal artist for decorative schemes, and by the eighteen-nineties he had become an important figure in the Arts and Crafts Movement. His early illustrative work, in pen and ink and watercolor, includes a number of Shakespeare-related volumes: Lamb’s Tales from Shakespeare (1899), A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1895), The Tempest (1901) and Shakespeare’s Heroines (1901). These display a concern for the page as a whole of flatness and lightness similar to those found in Walter Crane and Charles Ricketts. From 1894, he was on the staff of the School of Architecture, University College, Liverpool, later becoming a Professor of both University College, Liverpool, later becoming a Professor of both Glasgow School of Art (191824). He was also an honorary associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects (1916), and Master of the Art Workers’ Guild (1921) He began to exhibit at the Royal Academy in 1885 (ARA 1914, RA 1922) and at the New English Art Club in 1888 (NEAC 1892), while his solo shows included one at the Fine Art Society in 1907. He was also organized a number of international exhibitions of arts and crafts. His paintings were worked in both oil and tempera. $875.00 USD 22. DOSTOEVSKY'S GRAND INQUISITOR

25. Women in Love Lawrence, D. H. Publication Date: 1920 First edition, UK issue being one of 50 numbered copies signed by the author. Martin Secker bought 50 sets of sheets from the unsigned American edition, and bound them very much in the Secker style, though the publisher's name does not appear anywhere in the book. The regular trade edition did not appear in England for another two years. Roberts A15b Bound in the publisher’s brown cloth with gilt titles to the spine. Top edge of pages stained dark green. Housed in a well fitting 1/2 Brown Morocco Clamshell Box with full gilt spine. This book was at some point an ex-library copy in the least intrusive manner, thus few would consider that status much of a demerit. The spine has the faintest trace that there once was a number. On the title page there is in the center faint remains of a library number of which appears to have been partially removed but still showing some signs of its existence; this is quite inconspicuous. And finally cloth repairs have professionally been made to the spine and lower corner of the rear board, that can easily escape one's notice. From the beauty and rarity of this book. $4,250.00 USD

"As might be expected of anything which Mark Twain wrote, this autobiography is unlike any other ever written-as unconventional and unorthodox as its great author. Always, when the time came for him to go on with the dictation, he chose as his subject whatever was most interesting to him at the moment, regardless of chronological order. For he believed that a man’s thoughts, not his outward acts are his true history, which alone reveal him completely. "The resulting book is a stream of table-talk: anecdotes, humorous and serious; reminiscences of his mother, his daughter Susy, his boyhood days in Missouri; chronicles of his friendships with all manner of men, from General Grant and President Cleveland to his Irish coachman and the unfamed intimates of his vagabond youth; bold expressions of opinion on every sort of topic-all are here, full of the vigor and the humanity of their author, and forming an inexhaustible mine of entertainment, amusement, and delight." 41. A HISTORY OF THE ENGLISH-SPEAKING PEOPLES, Winston S. Churchill Published by Cassell and Company Ltd., London (1956)
4 Volumes, Cassell & Company, London, 1956. Cloth. Book Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: Good - Original. FIRST EDITION & FIRST PRINTING. Octavo. The Books - 1956 to 1958. All books are first editions and first printings. Octavo. Original red cloth, titles to spines in gilt, red top stain. All the books have their original first issue dustjackets. Red top-stain variably faded but in a nice overall condition. They are internally clean and bright, a very good set. All volumes illustrated with maps and genealogical tables. Churchill's history of the two branches of the English-speaking nations the British Empire and the United States was begun during his "Wilderness Years" in the early 1930s, but not completed until after his retirement from the political stage in the late 1950s. The events of the Second World War, the major interruption in the writing process, had reconfirmed his belief in the "Special Relationship", "For the second time in the present century the British Empire and the United States have stood together facing the perils of war on the largest scale known among men, and since the cannons ceased to fire and the bombs to burst we have become more conscious of our common duty to the human race." Consequently, he gave considerable attention to the key events of American history, around a quarter of the third volume, "The Age of Revolution", is dedicated to the American War of Independence, and a full third of the final volume, "The Great Democracies" contains a detailed study of the American Civil War. $475.00 USD

Riley, New York, 1809. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 8vo - over 7ž 9ž" tall. Travels and Adventures in Canada and the Indian Territories between the Years 1760 and 1776. In Two Parts. Author: Alexander Henry the elder - Alexander Henry "The Elder" was one of the leading pioneers of the British-Canadian fur trade following the British Conquest of New France; a partner in the North West Company, and a founding member and vice-chairman of the Beaver Club. In 1763-64, he lived and hunted with Wawatam of the Ojibwa, who had adopted him as a brother. "Blessed with as many lives as a cat," he recounted his time with the Ojibwa and subsequent explorations in his "Travels and Adventures in Canada and the Indian Territories between the years 1760 and 1776" (published New York, 1809), which he dedicated to his friend Sir Joseph Banks. The book is considered an adventure classic and one of the best descriptions of Native Indian life at this time. An "easy and dignified" raconteur, in 1776 Henry was invited to give an account of his journeys at the Royal Society in London and at Versailles to Queen Marie Antoinette. In the 1780s, Henry introduced John Jacob Astor into the Canadian fur trade; subsequently Astor would stay as Henry's guest during his annual visits to Montreal. Riley City: New York Year: 1809 Printing Information: First Edition, Pagination: vi / 330 pages plus errata leaf Width: 5.75" Height: 8.5" Book Details: From the preface: A premature attempt to share in the fur-trade of Canada, directly on the conquest of the country, led the author of the following pages into situations of some danger and singularity; and the pursuit, under better auspices, of the same branch of commerce, occasioned him to visit various parts of the Indian Territories. This is a scarce first edition of this work. The antique volume is bound in period tree sheep, the spine has gilt lines and centre tooling with a red lettering piece. Bryan Edwards was a renown English politician and historian, and a strong supporter of the slave trade. Originally published in 1793, the first two volumes were History, Civil and Commercial, of the British Colonies in the West Indies. 63. ORIGINAL ANECDOTES OF PETER THE GREAT. Staehlin Published by J. Murray, London, 1788 ORIGINAL ANECDOTES OF PETER THE GREAT First English Edition 1788 Bound in full Original Calf and recently professionally re-backed to style, remains of ink inscription on the title page at the top not affecting text. Complete 448pp no engraved title page as found in later editions. First English edition of this celebration of Peter III, in form of the 'ana' in fashion at that time. Stählin (1709 - 1785) had a deep knowledge of Russia and was an important academic figure, spending most of his life in St. Petersburg as Secretary of the Academy of Sciences. His present work also includes "An Alphabetical Account of the Persons on whose Authority the Anecdotes Are Given, and of the Eye-Witnesses by whom they were related". Famous collection of anecdotes about Peter the Great, based on eye-witness accounts which he collected for over twenty years during his life at the Imperial court in Saint Petersburg. Staehlin had a lot of opportunities to assemble a nice collection of stories about Peter the Great: he was the teacher of the heir to the Russian throne Peter Fedorovich, and after the latter had become Peter III of Russia, Staehlin was appointed the Emperor's librarian. Staehlin's book was published only after his death in 1785. And quickly became popular: it was translated into Russian (1786; went through 5 editions in the 18th century), French (1787) and English (1788). The anecdotes describe different events in official and private life of Peter the Great, showing his personality and often sense of humor: what he did in Paris, Danzig, or Wittenberg at Luther's tomb; what was his taste for painting, attitude to strangers, his preferences in collecting; the stories tell of Peter's simplicity at meals, aversion to particular species of insects and hunting, his curiosity to know what foreign nations thought of him, how he entertained Dutch seamen at court, "Earnestness of Peter the Great to discover pious frauds and destroy superstition", "Indefatigable ardour of Peter the Great in investigating everything"; "The Czar lays the foundation of Petersburg" and others. The book is supplemented with an alphabetical index of persons who were the source of the anecdotes, including Grand Chancellor of Russia Count Alexey Bestuzhev, First Russian General Prosecutor Count Paul Jaguzhinsky, personal doctor of the Empress Elizabeth Johann Hermann Lestocq, General Fieldmarchal Count Muennich, British ambassador in Saint Petersburg Rondeau, first director of the Library of Russian Academy of Sciences Daniel Schumacher and others. From the Preface to the first English edition (London: J. Murray, 1788): "A more authentic work was never published: he [Stählin] acquired the anecdotes it contains from the most respectable persons of the court and city" (p. 5). Staehlin came to Russia in 1735 and stayed there till the end of his life. A talented artist and engraver, he was in charge of the Arts department of the Imperial Academy of Sciences (future Russian Academy of Arts).

He was "one of the first Esprits cavaliers of the age," a man of broad knowledge, an expert in Newtonianism, architecture and music and a friend of most of the leading authors of his times: Voltaire, Jean-Baptiste de Boyer, Marquis d'Argens, Pierre-Louis de Maupertuis and the atheist Julien Offray de La Mettrie. The son of wealthy merchant, he became the darling of the European aristocracy. Leaving France for London, he became the paramour of Lady Mary Wortley Montagu who was ready to sacrifice her reputation and move to Italy with him. The Rev. Dr. Frederick Henry Quitman, the son of Stephen Henry and Anna Quitman, was born August 7, 1760, in the Duchy of Cleves in Westphalia [on an island!], in the lower Rhine. His father held an important office in the Prussian Government. The son, manifesting at an early age a great love for books, more than common intelligence, and superior talents and application to study, was placed by his father, into the celebrated school of Halle. After receiving the advantage of a liberal education Henry then transferred to Halle University. Under the guidance of George Christian Knapp (1753-1825), August Herman Niemeyer (17541828), Johann Salomo Semler (1725-1791), and other eminent professors in that distinguished seat of [Pietist, then Aufklarung Rationalist] learning. For more than thirty years Dr. Quitman divided his time among a number of small and scattered Lutheran churches in the Hudson River Valley. These congregations were dispersed groupings of German speaking farmers and craftsmen. At the time there was a profound shortage of German speaking Lutheran pastors willing to serve in the rustic wilds of New York. Dr. Quitman often preached seven or eight times a week in either German, Low Dutch, or English. "In is preaching he was brief, biblical, practical and impressive inculcating with great energy the Christian gospel¿ [and] He never used a manuscript in the pulpit." First in the associated churches of Schoharie and Kobles Kill [until 1798 ]; and afterwards in those of Rhinebeck, Wurtemburg, Germantown, and Livingston. $2,200 USD E.C. Rare Books
