Where the Wild Things Are... Brighten up the half-term holidays with a great show for children aged 5 to 11 years. The popular book by Maurice Sendak is brought to life with the help of hand puppets and interactive storytelling. Each show lasts for 30 minutes with an activities session after each performance. Christmas Storytimes We’ve loads of Christmas events for children of all ages. Our weekly Stories and Rhymes with Bookstart sessions for under 5s have a festive theme in the run up to Christmas. Events for young people aged 11–19 Get It Loud at Oldham Library The Crookes and Alan Pownall Sunday 3 October, 9pm Oldham Library Top indie band The Crookes play live at Oldham Library in October. The Sheffield boys are avid readers so will feel at home performing among the books! They’ve been getting rave reviews for debut single Bloodshot Days so catch them now before they hit the big time. Support comes from singer songwriter Alan Pownall. Tickets for The Crookes and Alan Pownall cost £6 and available from Oldham Library or online at www.seetickets.com

Children and families guide


Welcome You’ll find details here of fun activities for families happening at Oldham’s libraries until the end of the year.

Events are free and there’s no need to book in advance. All we ask is that children under 8 years of age are accompanied at all times. www.oldham.gov.uk/libraries for a full list of family events or ask library staff for more details.

Stories and Rhymes with Bookstart Come and share rhymes and songs at these fun activities for the under 5s. Sessions also include stories and rhymes to help develop reading and build a love of books in babies and young children.

All about Dads...

Each month we hold a special afternoon session at Oldham Library for families and children aged up to 11 years. From stunning stories to first class theatre there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

We’ve six weeks of Sunday activities at Oldham Library for dads, male carers and your young children aged up to 5 years.

Storytelling and Drama Workshop Sunday 26 September, 2–3pm Discover the secret world of sand sprites with author Lynda Waterhouse.

All About Dads’ sessions are free and are a great way to spend time with your child in the company of other dads:

From Here to There Sunday 17 October, 2–3pm Enjoy a inspiring live theatre show from Tell Tale Theatre Company. This is followed by a play session using words and music to help children explore their imagaination.

Come and join in the fun as Sundays at Oldham Library are all about families.

Spooky Sunday Sunday 31 October, 2–3pm Have fun with Halloween crafts and face painting run by Oldham Play Action Group.

We’ve games, soft play, finger painting, Lego and Duplo building for all ages to enjoy. Library staff will also have stories and rhymes to share.

Stories Alive Sunday 28 November, 2–3pm Learn to tell tales through music and movement with Indian dancer Bisakha Sarker.

Sessions run every Sunday 10.30am–12noon from 19 September.

Christmas Show Sunday 19 December, 2–3pm Watch talented young performers from Oldham Theatre Workshop put on a festive theatre show.

Sunday 7 November, 11am–12noon Wriggle and Jiggle: Music, songs and action rhyme, plus a free professional photograph of you and your child. Sunday 14 November, 11am–12noon Builders are Us: Get creative with Lego, Brio and other construction toys. Sunday 21 November, 11am–12noon Let’s Get Physical: Sports and games activities. Sunday 28 November, 11am–12noon Counting and Colours: Test your brain using colours and numbers.

Baby days...

Sunday 5 December, 11am–12noon Super Stories: Pick up storytelling tips as we explore some amazing books.

Come along in your pyjamas and settle down for a story from Wee Willie Winkie.

Sunday 12 December, 11am–12noon Christmas Crafts: Make a festive frame for your special ‘Dad and child’ photograph.

These sessions for toddlers and young children are great fun and an ideal way to develop a relaxing bedtime reading routine.

Get together with other parents and carers to share your experiences at our monthly Baby Days at Oldham Library.
