October 15 – Pigs & Pippins! Harvest Day at Old Salem Celebrate the fall harvest with hands-on activities, puppet shows, historic demonstrations and more. 9:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Included with All-In-One ticket, Adults/$21; 6-16/$10. October 20 – Spring Flowering Bulbs For gorgeous spring color, fall is the time to plant flowering bulbs! Learn the basics! Noon (bring lunch). Free. Frank L. Horton Museum Center. October 25 – Our Spirited Ancestors: The Decorative Art of Drink A new exhibit at MESDA opens exploring the furniture, silver, and ceramics that helped to enliven the days and nights of the early American South. On display until Sept. 2012. Free with paid museum admission ticket. October 28, 29 – Jack-o-lantern Carving Contest Show off your pumpkin carving creativity. Free pumpkins; bring your own tools. Prizes will be awarded. Friday 5 – 7 p.m./ Saturday 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Free. October 28, 29 – Legends and Lanterns Tours Tour Salem’s nighttime streets, visit haunted stops and hear local ghost tales. Tours begin every 15 mins. From 6 – 9 p.m. Tickets $20/adult and $15/ children ($18/$13 for Friends of Old Salem). Pre-registration suggested.* October 29 – Joiner’s Tool Kit Class Participants will make tools commonly found in early woodworkers’ tool chests. 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. $125 ($112 for Friends of Old Salem). Pre-registration required. Historic Trades Backshop.* October 30 – Trick-or-treating in the Historic District Old Salem Museums & Gardens will host trick-or-treating for children, who should be accompanied by a parent/adult and wear light-colored costumes/ clothing for safety. 6 – 9 p.m. Free.

November 5 – Herbal Body Care Learn to create lotions, soaps, skin cleansers and other herbal body care products. 10 a.m. Free. Frank L. Horton Center. November 5 – Moravian Board Bench Class Build a Moravian six board bench using mortise and tenon construction. 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. $160 ($145 for Friends of Old Salem). Pre-registration required. Single Brothers’ House.* November 12 – Shops at Old Salem Holiday Open House Get a jump on your holiday shopping. Visit Old Salem from 9:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. for special music, food sampling, craftsmen, authors, storytelling, vendors, shopping and more. Free. November 12 – MESDA Saturday Seminar: Our Spirited Ancestors Explores the customs, furniture, and ceramics associated with the art of liquid entertainment in the early South. Noted speakers. 10 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. $65 ($55 for Friends of MESDA or Old Salem). To register, call 336-721-7360. November 15 – Build a Christmas Pyramid Class Participants will use basic hand skills and tools to assemble a traditionally styled wooden pyramid used in period Christmas decorating. 6 – 9 p.m. $95 ($85 for Friends of Old Salem). Pre-registration required. Single Brothers’ Workshop.* November 15 – A Moravian Sampler Christmas Museum Class Make hand-dipped beeswax candles, beautifully decorated paste paper, and Christmas scherenschnitte (cut paper). After class, enjoy warm gingerbread and spiced apple cider by the kitchen hearth. 6 – 9 p.m. $20 ($18 for Friends of Old Salem). Pre-registration required. Single Brothers’ Workshop.* November 17 – Preparing Your Garden for Winter Prepare your garden now for favorable results next spring. At noon. Free (bring lunch). Frank L. Horton Center. November 18, 19, 25, 26 – Christmas by Candlelight 18th Century Tours Take a guided tour by candlelight. The evening will include music, games, food and drink. Tours begin at 6:30, 7:00, 7:30, and 8:00 p.m. $20/adults, $15/ children ($18/$15 for Friends of Old Salem). Pre-registration required.* November 19 – Holiday Wreath Classes Classes take place at 10 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. $38/adults and children ($34 for Friends of Old Salem). December 1 – Woodworking Class: Moravian Peg Rack In this beginner’s class, participants will use hand tools to construct a traditional Moravian peg rack. 6 – 9 p.m. $45 ($40 for Friends of Old Salem). Pre-registration required. Single Brother’s Workshop.*


December 1 – Christmas Baking Class: Pies, Puffs, and Other Stuff Using traditional hearth cooking, bake a savory pie and apple puffs. Make vinegar. 6 – 9 p.m. $30, ($27 for Friends of Old Salem). Pre-registration required.* December 3, 4 – Old Salem Presents Christmas with the Winston-Salem Symphony The Winston-Salem Symphony, the Symphony Chorale and guest soloists Kathryn Mueller, soprano, and Diana Yodzis, alto, present a holiday concert. A half hour before each concert, guest organist John Cummins will perform on the Tannenberg organ. Dec. 3: prelude at 7 p.m. concert at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 4: prelude at 2:30 p.m. concert at 3 p.m. $50/adults, $15/students and under 18. James A. December 10 – Salem Christmas Join us for this annual celebration of Moravian Christmas traditions with hands-on activities, demonstrations, wagon rides, cooking and more! 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. At 5:15 p.m. carol singing and lighting of the Christmas pyramid. Included with All-In-One ticket, Adults/$21; 6-16/$10. December 15 – 150th Anniversary of the African Moravian Brick Church Consecrated on December 15, 1861, St. Philips Moravian Church is the oldest African American church standing in North Carolina. 11:00 am - Lovefeast, with brass band. 7 p.m. - An Evening of Conversation and Music and Candle Light Memorial. Free. December 29 – “Peter and the Wolf ” A delightful performance of the beloved childhood classic tale by Sergei Prokofiev featuring the Carolina Symphony Players.
