Olds College provides a variety of livestock training for producers and hobby farmers. Through a combination of classroom and hands-on learning, these courses provide you with the skills to better manage herd health while saving money on veterinary and hoof trimming bills, and provides you with the skills that you may require to work for a livestock operation. CATTLE AI (ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION) This intensive, 4-day course covers all aspects of Artificial Insemination (AI) and herd reproduction management. Students will be introduced to aspects of artificial insemination and herd reproduction management to be used in a producerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s own herd. Lectures will provide an understanding of controlled breeding, sire selection, and nutrition. The logistics of getting set up to practice all on your own will be addressed, including required equipment and costs. The hands-on portion of this course will provide the opportunity for students to practice correct semen handling and artificial insemination techniques and procedures.

BACKCOUNTRY HORSEMANSHIP

Horse owners know how important hoof care is. It can also be expensive and time consuming. This course will help save you time and money. During this 2Â˝-day, hands-on course, you will learn the basics of hoof care, how to treat minor hoof problems, and when to call the farrier. Trimming is practiced in a supervised setting. Participants may bring their own horse on the last day. Trimming tools are required.

Our Horse Racing Programs are one of a kind in North America, delivered in state-of-the-art facilities, and instructed by supportive, experienced horse racing professionals. Each Program is highly subsidized by Horse Racing Alberta, to provide professionally trained horse people in the industry. While this is not legislated in Alberta at this time, Olds College has government approved Heavy Equipment Operator Curriculum. We are able to provide equipment specific Safety Certification. This is based upon our curriculum that has been developed and reviewed with Industry Stakeholders. Prerequisite hours for entry into the evaluations are EQUIPMENT BASED. UTILITY TREE WORKER & UTILITY TREE TRIMMER RECERTIFICATION The Professional Vegetation Manager's Association (PVMA), in association with the Work & Safety Standards Division of Alberta Labour requires certified Utility Tree Trimmers and Utility Tree Workers to complete a recertfication course within five (5) years after obtaining their initial certification and every five (5) years thereafter. You will be updated on current electrical safety standards and safety practices important to you on the job. Register in this course if your certificate expires in 2017. Olds College and Algonquin College, Perth Campus, in Perth, Ontario are joining forces to deliver two 1-week Heritage Carpentry courses. If you have some trim carpentry experience or have worked in a woodworking shop /environment before and you have an appreciation for heritage, then these courses are for you. Algonquin College is home to a number of college programs, but it is also home to the Heritage Institute with programs designed and delivered by experts in old world craft. These courses emphasize a tradespersonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s role as a producer, rather than an installer, of building products. HERITAGE RESTORATION METHODS

HERITAGE MILLWORK: MOULDINGS & TRIM The Heritage Millwork â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Mouldings and Trim course provides an opportunity to work on heritage joinery that provides the finishing touches to a building and helps define its character. Students learn the theory and practice of reproducing and installing architectural components. Production techniques for fabricating casings, baseboards, crown moulding and other interior millwork pieces are discussed and practiced. In this course, you will apply standard safety requirements applicable to the joinery trade, learn how to differentiate types and styles of traditional and contemporary joinery components, learn how to design organizational procedures for creating and installing joinery components, evaluate traditional joinery techniques and apply them in the production of joinery components. Through an engaging shop project over the course of 1-week you will explore and apply your learning as it relates to crown moulding and baseboard installation, selecting and buying mouldings, moulding reproduction techniques, types of window and door casing, and traditional wainscot design. In this course, the focus is on how to perform repairs to traditional casing, windows, doors or other building elements. Through learning about restoration and repair techniques for buildings and building elements, and exploring a variety of building deficiencies typically seen in historical buildings and investigating their repair strategies, students become exposed to traditional and contemporary solutions to a variety of problems. Conservation standards are explored while performing hands-on restoration techniques. In this course, you will identify and define some of the different conservation approaches commonly used in the industry, identify some of the common hazards and problems in older buildings, including health, safety, and environmental concerns and through hands-on work be able to practice how to perform repairs to traditional building elements. Knowing where to find the technical publications relevant to the conservation of the built environment will help students continue after the course with their own ongoing learning. The Canada-Alberta Job Grant is an employer-driven training program. This means that employers decide on who gets training and what type of training may be needed for new and existing employees. Employers are required to use a third-party training provider to deliver the formal training either onsite, online, or in a classroom setting. The Canada Job Grant is part of the Government of Canada and Government of Alberta’s commitment to help address skills mismatches and ensure that employees are being trained in high-demand areas.

HOW THE CANADA-ALBERTA JOB GRANT CAN WORK FOR YOU: Example: Alberta Company Inc. is adjusting its workforce to align with a lower demand for their product. In order to remain competitive in the current economic climate, the business is looking at building the skills of its current workers. Employers know business success is tied to how well employees do their jobs. Skills training will provide both the employer and workers with the flexibility needed for success. To accomplish this, Alberta Company Inc. estimates its investment in combined training courses will be $12,000 per employee. The Canada-Alberta Job Grant could offset this amount by up to $8,000 per employee. It’s a win-win.
